Introduction

Welcome to the first edition of GO Yalikavak Summer 18 I have been visiting this gem of a place for over 10 years and it never fails to overwhelm me with happiness. It truly is the jewel in the Bodrum Peninsula and without a shadow of a doubt it boasts the finest sunset!! The idea of this publication is to promote the area to its residents, seasonal travellers, holiday makers and those wishing to find out more before they book! I have compiled the information from local businesses, tourists and those like myself who spend a lot longer here.

If you would like to advertise your business, promote events or local charities then please get in touch via email at goyalikavak@ icloud.com any great ideas of things you would like to see or recommendations you would like to make again please share via email.

My aim is to make this an online publication going forward, this is just a taster!

Hotel

I had a wonder around this hotel and was shown the rooms including the penthouse suite! Certainly exceed my expectations. Exceptionally clean and beautifully decorated, this hotel is open all year round. Inspired by the 70s architecture, Boho features ďŹ ve uniquely designed rooms with stunning views of the coastline. Conveniently located on the seafront in Yalikavak, the hotel is within walking distance to the marina and nearby trails. With its private beach and pier, the hotel oers luxurious comfort in a bohemian setting.

Sunset Yalikavak is set in prime position, opened this year by Metin Demir , a very proud Chef who has been in the area for a long time. Food is freshly prepared and beautifully presented by Metin himself. All staff are very friendly and the service is excellent. Open every day serving Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. Cold beers, nice wines and delicious cocktails. Personally I highly recommend the Salmon cooked in Orange & Oregano Sauce. As well as food it is perfect for a day on the beach, with showers to wash the sand off and dress a relaxing drink at the end of sunbathing ad watch the beautiful sunset.

Everyone is welcome go yalikavak directory.indd 6

TURKISH st breakfa

Breakfast - Kahvalti

Is the most important meal of the day for Turkish people. It happens every single day of the week, and it’s just as much a ritual on Wednesday as it is on Sunday. The idea is to sample as many different flavours as possible, whilst working through several pots of tea before the pide (bread) basket is empty. One thing is for sure it will definitely help you get through the day.

Jams and Spreads, Black olive spread is a popular option on pide, if you’re the kind of person who likes something salty and savoury early in the morning. For those looking for a sweeter option, drizzle pekmez, or molasses, on top of a thin coat of tahini. Because hazelnut is a key export, Turks are also really into hazelnut spreads—and yes, that includes Nutella. As for jams, most grandmothers spend half the year sourcing the best fruits from their greengrocers; the rest of the year is spent canning and preserving until grandchildren come by to take the spoils home with them. Sour cherry, apricot, and fig jams are classic options. Eggs, plenty of eggs cooked in a variety of ways for your own preference. Finally it’s all washed down with TEA, pots of it, obviously you can have a Turkish coffee. However, if you if you’re looking to replicate an authentic experience you should stick to TEA.

Cheese, Feta cheese (beyaz peynir) is a true standby, others may include Kasseri, a hard cheese made from unpasteurized sheep milk, lor, an uncured goat’s cheese that’s like Turkey’s version of cottage cheese. Erzurum that comes in long stringy pieces called civil peyniri.) Bread, Simit is the real star of the kahvalti spread; it’s the ideal canvas for your cheeses and jams. The doughy, sesame-seed-coated rings are often sold on street corners, inside subway stations and at virtually every bakery in Turkey. Typically, the Turkish bagel is ripped into smaller pieces and dipped into cheese or jam. For many people, simit is the perfect portable breakfast, as it’s so readily available and rarely costs more than a few Turkish lira. Pide, which is the traditional bread option: fluffy squares of dough coated in seeds.

TRIPS TO THE GREEK ISLANDS FACT; You can see some of the Greek Islands in the Eastern Aegean Sea from Yalikavak, it’s only a short distance by boat from nearby Turgutreis or Bodrum where you can hop aboard at a very reasonable price to visit the very lovely Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Simi, Rhodes. Kos is less than 30 minutes by ferry and costs around 30 Euros for the return trip, you can return the same day or make a mini break and stay longer! You could even catch boat from Kos to Satarini definitely making the most of being on the Bodrum peninsula.

drink Ouzo (if you like it) whilst picking up some duty free if you fancy it. Bumerang Yalikavak and Heaven Travel Agents will both assist with booking boat trips to Greek Islands or you can do it on line or directly at the port, however it is advisable to book early as they can be very busy in height of the season.

It’s a perfect day out with the opportunity to visit Greece, meet some locals, explore some more and

Market Day or Pazar as the

Turkish People say, they will however recognise Bazar if you are asking for directions! Nearly every day of the week there is a “market” on Bodrum peninsula but Yalikavak proudly boasts the best according to my research.

Tuesday is all about food, fresh vegetables, colourful fruit bursting with flavour and scents of so many tantalizing spices! Not forgetting the nuts, olives, cheeses, meats and of course the famous Turkish Delight. I personally love how you can also try before you buy. Thursday Market is all about the textiles. Yalikavak market is famous for its fabulous rugs and copycat designer clothes where you can find regional woven textiles of various kinds. I recommend regional woven towels. Everything is very colourful and joyful in the market. Glamourous shoes & handbags make it nearly impossible to resist a bargain. The market workers are all very polite with a great sense of humour, always happy to haggle but remember they do have a living to make and the exchange rate is very good this year.

go yalikavak directory.indd 14

I always take a rucksack to carry my purchases home it’s much easier than plastic bags. A word of warning if you are going on the bus it can get busy so maybe just relax on the beach for a few hours then wonder round the market before heading home.

17/08/2018 13:41

*Tip of the day‌ in mid-summer take a big bottle of water with you if you are visiting the bazaar as it can get very hot indeed. It really is well worth a visit for a bargain, if not just to wonder aimlessly around and soak up the culture and lovely atmosphere.

J.Joes of Yalikavak is just great for kids, couples & families alike, both day and evening all are made to feel very welcome. If you want to just sunbathe, make a sandcastle, take a swim or watch the stunning sunset with a cold Limonata, Beer or Cocktail you can. Affordable Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner are all served by the extremely friendly, helpful staff with a fantastic sense of humour who really cannot do enough for you. Over the last few weeks I have tried a few things on the menu and not been disappointed at all. Great presentation, perfect sized portions and all the food has been lovely and fresh to say the least. King Prawns & Calamari served on a bed of lush salad was my favourite! Smelt amazing, looked delightful and tasted scrummylicious. (my own word). The Lamb Chops were so succulent, served with new potatoes & mint

sauce, so beautifully presented, just perfect. Chicken Wraps served with salad and chips on a board are a perfect “lite bite” although quite filling! My friends tell me the pizzas are also great for sharing. With bathroom/shower facilities to use for free at the end of the beach day, with a safe swimming area, it’s a great location on the Aegean Sea looking out to Kalymnos, some fine looking Yachts to watch sail by too. It has to be said that the bar is also very well stocked with all the brands, local spirits and some very fine wines too. If you happen to be celebrating a Birthday I can recommend if you tell the guys you will receive “royal treatment” complete with cake, sparklers & more surprises! If you are in Yalikavak or nearby then please pop along and see Cuneyt, Fatih & the Boys you will not be disappointed.

Yalikavak Street Animals

A

s an animal lover myself I feel it necessary to promote the good work these guys do. If you would like to get involved (even if only on a very small scale) please look them up on facebook. Often there are auctions on this page of items donated, you can make a bid, bag a bargain and help a good cause. Yalikavak Street Animals is a Facebook Group that has been set up to raise awareness of the plight of our local street animals. The aim of the group is to take positive action to help them have a good quality of life. There are many ways Yalikavak animal lovers can help such as: •Assisting with distributing food •Adopting a stray animal •Contributing bric-a-brac, housewares and clothes in good clean condition for our sales. •Donations of goods can be dropped off at our depot. •Supporting the sales as a helper •Visiting our sales to grab a bargain (Our depot is a container unit located by the Belediye .Sales held Sat/Tue 10-4). •Identifying/taking an animal to be neutered/speyed (please contact)

They appreciate all help and support massively. Working as a small dedicated team they endeavour to be welcoming to anyone who would like to come forward to assist. Your suggestions, advice and feedback are welcome.

Additional information:

•Donating goods to be used as auction or tombola prizes - ask the team what items are popular and can be easily fitted into your luggage. Just a few items per visitor would be a great help.

Yalikavak Street Animals is not a registered charity. There is no legal obligation to keep accounts but all expenditure is recorded and receipts kept. Expenditure includes petrol to transport animals to be speyed/treated, medications, treatments, any essential items needed to provide care, and provide food for the animals on our streets. Animals are speyed/treated by local vets who keep charges down for street animals. Please note due to limited funds we are unable to pay for vaccinations or for the expenses incurred in adopting an animal abroad.

•Private cash donations, bank payments to a UK bank account and Standing Orders

Supporting the needs of YALIKAVAK area street animals ONLY.

•Fostering neutered animals till they are recovered enough to re-release or till adopted •Attending and supporting our fund-raising events
