Located at the top of the grandstand area directly behind home plate, the press box gives media personnel access to three radio/TV booths and a working press area which seats up to 18 people. In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates a half-century of the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. Commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 14 member universities in four states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of existence. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed the addition of Oral Roberts University in 201213, marking the league’s first entry into the state of Oklahoma. Also, on July 1, 2013, the Southland welcomed four additional members: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the Southland Conference also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. An original Southland member, Abilene Christian rejoins the league as one of the most decorated athletic programs in NCAA history, and the addition of Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and New Orleans gives the Southland a regular competitive presence in the key metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans. Southland cities encompass approximately 14.5 million people, and seven of its television markets rank among the top 100 in the U.S. All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS

news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). Other notable alums from current members include Grammy Award-winning musicians Frank Ocean (New Orleans), Don Henley and Rodney Crowell (both Stephen F. Austin). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and

women’s tennis, and volleyball. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewership through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. In its first five years, the network has received recognition for its work, earning numerous College Sports Media and Telly Awards. The Southland Conference, in conjunction with the city of Frisco, Texas, and Hunt Sports Group, also serves as the host to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in Frisco, which has been home to the conference headquarters since 2006. The game is played at Frisco’s FC Dallas Stadium, and after a successful three-year run, the partnership was rewarded with a three-year renewal to serve as the national championship host site through the 2015 season. Men’s basketball has experienced a tremendous amount of success during the Southland’s 50 years. The league has sent four teams to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, as well as a squad to the NIT Final Four. Basketball stars Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Jeff Foster, Dwight “Bo” Lamar, Andrew Toney and Mike Oliver played in the Southland Conference. In 2006, Northwestern State, playing as the No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament, defeated No. 3 seed Iowa, 64-63, in first-round action. The league also saw three of its current teams, including newcomer Oral Roberts, reach the postseason in 2012. Coaches such as Billy Tubbs, Mike Vining, Scotty Robertson, Jack Martin, Andy Russo, Bob Marlin, Danny Kaspar, Mike McConathy, Bobby Paschal and Pat Foster have led successful teams in the Southland. In women’s basketball, the Southland also has its share of tradition with former member Louisiana-Monroe advancing to the 1985 NCAA Women’s Final Four, and Stephen F. Austin sustaining itself as one of the most successful programs in the history of the sport. In 2008, the Ladyjacks became the eighth program in NCAA Division I history to record more than 800 wins. In each of the last four seasons, at least three Southland teams reached the postseason, and in 2012, four women’s squads earned postseason berths. A Southland team has played in the WNIT 13 times, including each of the last seven years. Women’s basketball all-stars have included Eun Jung Lee, Lisa

Ingram, Portia Hill, Deneen Parker, Katrina Price, and Joskeen Garner, and coaches such as Gary Blair, Linda Sharp, James Smith and Linda Harper. Baseball has emerged as a constant Southland Conference strength with the league earning numerous national rankings and NCAA tournament berths. The Southland consistently ranks among the top-10 conferences in the country. In 2011, 50 of the league’s 150 non-conference victories came against the Big 12, Conference USA, Sun Belt and SEC. Major leaguers such as Ben Sheets, Micah Hoffpauir, Hunter Pence, David Segui, Brian Lawrence, Ben Broussard, Chuck Finley, Jerald Clark, and Terry Matthews once played in the Southland. In 2012, Southeastern Louisiana’s Stefan Lopez became the league’s second winner of the national Stopper of the Year Award, which is selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers. Sam Houston State’s Luke Prihoda won the award in 2007. Only the Big 12 has had more players win this award. The Southland also fares well each year in the Major League Draft, but for the first time in conference history, two Southland players were selected in the first round of the 2013 draft. Stephen F. Austin shortstop Hunter Dozier was picked eighth by the Kansas City Royals making the Southland player and hitter of the year the league’s top draft pick in any sport. Later in the first round, the Texas Rangers selected Oral Roberts right-handed pitcher Alex Gonzalez, Southland pitcher of the year, with the 23rd overall pick. The Southland has had eight first-round picks in its history.

In 2011, Lamar mentor Jim Gilligan became the first Southland coach to reach 1,200 career victories, ranking him sixth-best in the NCAA among active Division I coaches and 24th all-time. He leads an impressive list of coaches who have patrolled Southland Conference dugouts, including Mark Johnson, Mike Bianco, John Cohen, Mitch Gaspard, Smoke Laval, Butch McBroom, Pat Patterson, Tony Robichaux, Dave Van Horn and Jim Wells. The Southland also has a proud history in volleyball with former member Texas-Arlington representing the conference numerous times in the NCAA tournament, including a run to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four in 1989. Track and field has also served as a proud asset for the Southland Conference as the league has produced numerous national champions and Olympic medalists. The Southland boasts 28 men and three women student-athletes who have won NCAA track and field national championships, including Northwestern State’s Trecey Rew, who won the women’s discus in 2011, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Shadrack Songok (10,000-meter run) in 2007 and 2008 and McNeese State’s Brad Gebauer (pole vault) in 2007. The league has also produced U.S. Olympic track and field medalists Earl Bell, Thomas Hill, Al Joyner, Charles Austin, and Liudmila Litvinova, along with other Olympians. With the addition of 10 more All-Americans in 2012, the league continues to find national success in both indoor and outdoor track and field. In the indoor circuit, the Southland boasts 66 unique all-time All-Americans that have won a combined 11 national championships. Likewise, in the outdoor season, the league has seen 158 different All-Americans, including 128 men and 30 women, who have combined to win 21 national championships. Golf has traditionally been a strong Southland sport as exemplified by Lamar men’s golfer Chris Stroud, who finished third individually at the 2003 NCAA National Championship and is a member of the PGA Tour. Both Stroud and former Southeastern Louisiana golfer Hugo Leon competed in

the 2010 U.S. Open. Lamar alum Shawn Stefani had a pair of top seven finishes through the midway point of the 2013 PGA tour. The league has sent multiple teams into postseason play on numerous occasions, including in 2012 when three Southland teams – Lamar, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas-Arlington – competed in the NCAA tournament. Additionally, during the past five seasons the Southland has sent 12 golfers to compete as individuals in regional play with five in 2009, three more in 2010, one each in 2011 and 2012 and two in 2013. Lamar won a pair of NCAA Division II national championships in 1967 and 1968, and also produced PGA player Ronnie Black. In 2005, Lamar’s Dawie Van Der Walt finished fourth individually and Lamar tied for 12th place at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, before the Cardinals tied for ninth in 2006 and tied for third in 2007. Former Lamar golfer Casey Clendenon advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur in 2007. In women’s tennis, Southeastern Louisiana won 46 consecutive conference matches during a four-year period that began in 2005, while in men’s tennis Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has played in the NCAA tournament five times in the last seven years. The conference has increased sponsorship and championship opportunities for female student-athletes in recent years, adding women’s golf and soccer as league sports. In women’s soccer, Stephen F. Austin midfielder Kylie Louw became the first player in conference history to earn All-America honors, when she earned third-team mention by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A member of the South Africa Olympic team during the 2012 London Olympics, she also garnered first-team Academic All-America Honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Ladyjacks have gone 72-12-8 (.826) in conference play during the last 10 seasons.

Lamar leads all league teams with four team championships during that span. The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A record 979 studentathletes appeared on the honor roll following the 2012 spring semester, and total of 1,545 student-athletes earned a spot on the honor roll at the end of

While successful on the fields and courts, the Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. The conference continues to make great strides in the classroom. During the last seven years, no other Division I conference has improved its Academic Progress Rate as well as the Southland Conference has. In fact, in 2009-10, the Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Division I leagues in men’s basketball APR. The academic progress the league has shown ultimately leads to higher graduation rates for our student-athletes. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.

J.L. Johnson Stadium has been the home of Golden Eagles baseball since 1978. Since the first game on March 6, 1978, Johnson Stadium has been recognized as one the finest baseball facilities in the Midwest. And in recent years, the stadium has been refurbished and expanded, making J.L. Johnson Stadium one of the top facilities in the nation. In the last few years, J.L. Johnson Stadium has received a new outfield fence, new padding on the cinder block wall between the dugouts and behind home plate, a new bullpen in right field, new railings in the grandstand area and an updated entry way. The stadium also received an exterior facelift in the summer of 2009. Recent renovations include the home locker room and player’s lounge. In 2008 a 20,000-square foot facility was added which includes coaches offices, a stateof-the-art weight room and the Grand Slam Room in which boosters and fans can watch ORU games in a climate-controlled environment. The facility is located down the right-field line. Johnson Stadium has been host to three NCAA Regionals (1978, 1980, 1981), 14 conference tournaments and countless All-Americans. Dozens of Major Leaguers have played at Johnson Stadium, including Roger Clemens, Joe Carter, Kirk Gibson, Tony Gwynn, Keith Lockhart, Pete Incavigilia, Kevin McReynolds, Mike Moore and Robin Ventura.

Facilities H.A. Chapman Indoor Facility The H.A. Chapman Indoor Practice Facility opened in the Fall of 2009. The 35,00-square foot facility, located just west of J.L. Johnson Stadium, features indoor practices areas for both the baseball and track & field programs. Built at a cost of $1.2 million, the facility was funded exclusively through private donations, including a genrous lead gift from the H.A. and Mary K. Champman Charitable Trust. The baseball portion of the facility features a regulation-sized infield, three pitching areas and three netted batting cages. The track & field area features a complete pole vault area, high jump pit and long jump & triple jump practice areas.

Burkart Family Strengh & Conditioning Center Located adjacent to J.L. Johnson Stadium, the Burkhart Family Strengh & Coniditioning Center is where all ORU student-athletes go to train. The facility features state-of-the-art workout equipment and is supervised by ORUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world-class team of coaches and athletic trainers.

Ryan Folmar is in his second season as the Head Baseball Coach at Oral Roberts University after serving nine seasons as the program’s top assistant. In his first season as the skipper, the Golden Eagles finished two wins shy of a Southland Conference Tournament championship, completing the season with a 25-36 overall record. ORU finished third in the league with a 16-11 record, including the first threegame sweep of ranked opponent when the Golden Eagles took three against then No. 23 Central Arkansas. Under Folmar in his first season, Alex Gonzalez finished second in the NCAA in strikeouts with 126, helping him to Second Team All-American honors by Pefect Game. Gonzalez was also named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and a First Team AllSouthland selection. Gonzalez was drafted No. 23 overall by the Texas Rangers in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Joining Gonzalez as All-Southland selections in 2013 under Folmar were Third Team members Jose Trevino and Tyler Boss. Folmar spent the previous nine seasons developing a reputation as one of the finest hitting instructors in all of college baseball. ORU won the Summit League championship in each of Folmar’s nine seasons on the ORU staff, advancing to NCAA Regional play each season. The Golden Eagles advanced to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006, finishing the season ranked in the top-25 nationally in every major college baseball poll. Folmar’s offense was the backbone of the squad, finishing in the national top-20 in batting average, runs scored and slugging percentage. The 2008 season was another banner year for Folmar’s offense. The Golden Eagles won 48 games that season and posted one of the best offensive efforts in program history. That season, ORU placed in the top-20 nationally in hits, runs, batting average and doubles. Folmar’s 2012 offense ranked as the finest in the Summit League, leading the conference in runs scored and home runs. Folmar tutored freshman 3rd baseman Trevino into one of the finest young players in college baseball, as the rookie earned Summit League Newcomer of the Year honors and two freshman All-America nods.

Eight of Folmar’s ORU hitting protégés are currently playing affiliated Minor League Baseball. Two of Folmar’s ORU desciples, Cam Schiller and Bennett Pickar, were picked in the first 11 rounds of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. Folmar joined the Golden Eagles after spending five seasons (1999-2003) as Director of Baseball Operations at Oklahoma State. At OSU Folmar handled various administrative duties, including the Cowboy baseball camps and served for three years as the color voice on OSU radio broadcasts. A four-year letter winner at OSU from 1994-97, Folmar earned honorable mention All-Big 8 honors as a sophomore in 1995, and he helped lead the Cowboys to the 1996 College World Series. Following his OSU playing days the Chambersburg, Pa., native spent two seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization. Folmar and his wife Kay Lynn have three children: Kade (11), Reese (9) and Luke (4).

Coaching Staff Ryan Neill

Assistant Coach, Recruiting Coordinator Eleventh Season A member of the ORU Athletic Hall of Fame, this season will be Ryan Neill’s 11th on the ORU coaching staff and the eighth season that the former AllAmerican has served in a fulltime role. Neill has been a part of 13 conference at ORU as a player and a coach. Since becoming a full-time assistant in the summer of 2006, Neill is more actively involved in off-campus recruiting. He also serves as ORU’s bench coach in addition to coaching infielders.

His best season came during the 1999 campaign when he batted .423 with 18 home runs and 71 RBI, earning Third-Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball. The Golden Eagles were a combined 166-80 (.675) during Neill’s four seasons. Drafted in the 24th round by the Detroit Tigers in 2000 Neill spent three seasons in Detroit’s minor league system before retiring after the 2002 season. Neill married the former Audrey Ramirez on December 18, 2004 in San Antonio. The couple resides in Tulsa and have a daughter, Dahlia (7).

During Neill’s eight seasons overseeing ORU’s infielders, ten different infielders have earned First Team AllSummit League honors, and seven have been taken in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Most recently, shortstop Nate Goro was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in June of 2013. In 2012, Neill guided senior Jared Schlehuber to a Summit League Player of the Year honor, while fellow senior Cam Schiller was an 8th round draft pick of the Texas Rangers. Schlehuber also signed a professional contract after his senior year, joining the Kansas City Royals organization. In 2010 shortstop Tyler Saladino was named Summit League Newcomer & Player of the Year after batting .376 with 18 home runs and 76 RBI. Saladino was picked in the seventh round of the MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox. ORU’s career home run (48) and RBI (199) leader, Neill lettered four seasons at ORU (1997-2000) as a first baseman/outfielder, twice earning First-Team All MidContinent Conference honors (1999, 2000) and also capturing Mid-Con Tournament MVP honors in 1999. Neill, an Okmulgee, Okla., native, was a key member of three NCAA Tournament and Mid-Con Championship squads (1998-2000).

Coaching Staff Sean Snedeker

Pitching Coach - Second Season Sean Snedeker is in his second season as the leader of the ORU pitching staff. Under Snedeker’s direction in 2013, the Golden Eagle pitching staff finished with the second lowest earned run average in the Southland Conference at 3.54. Sneder led Alex Gonzalez who was named the Southland Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Southland and was No. 23 overall by the Texas Rangers in June of 2013. Snedeker joined the ORU baseball staff in July 2012, bringing nearly 20 years of experience to the Golden Eagles, most recently spending six years as the pitching coach at Duke, leading a staff that finished eighth in the nation in ERA in 2008. Snedeker’s staff also improved in strikeouts each year, finishing 2012 with an average of eight strikeouts per nine-inning game, good enough for nineth in the country. He helped develop over a dozen professional pitching prospects while at Duke, including Marcus Stroman who went 22nd overall to the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2012 MLB draft.

Prior to his time at Duke, Snedeker spent 12 seasons as a pitching coach in the Chicago White Sox organization and another year in the Los Angeles Dodgers system, coaching more than 50 current or former major league pitchers, including 2012 All-Star and National League Cy Young runner-up, Gio Gonzalez. A standout at Texas A&M from 1987-88, Snedeker had a 17-4 overall record. In 1988, Snedeker turned in a 9-2 record and a 3.50 ERA while stricking out 87 batters and walking 41, earning the C.E. “Pat” Olsen Outstanding Pitcher Award that season. Snedeker was selected in the 30th round of the 1988 MLB Amateur Draft, reaching Double-A level before leaving to join the coaching ranks. Professionally, he compiled a 34-21 record with a career 3.24 ERA. His career highlight came while pitching for Class A Vero Beach when he tossed a perfect game on August 28, 1991, against the Port St. Lucie Mets. Snedeker owns both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M. He and his wife, Mary Jane, have two children, a daughter, Sydney (19) who attends Texas, and son, Sy (14).

Coaching Staff Adam White

Volunteer Assistant Coach - First Season Adam White joins the ORU staff for the 2013-14 school year after spending three years with the Penn State baseball program, most recently as an assistant coach. White will be responsible for working with outfield defense and base running. As an assistant, White worked with the Nittany Lion outfielders and coached first base. He also spent time with the team working on base running, hitting and bunting. In 2013, White was the head coach for the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods Summer Collegiate League. While the manager, White was responsible for recruiting, hitting, base running and oversaw the team defense and pitching.

White served as an assistant coach for the Stark County Terriers of the Great Lakes Collegiate League in 2012, overseeing team hitting and coaching the outfielders. His hitters led the league in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, home runs, hits and runs scored. As a player, White was the 2006 Rookie of the Year at West Virginia after hitting .368, and was selected as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. An All-Big East pick, he hit .365 as a sophomore and was a 2007 National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American. Following his 2007 campaign, White was selected in the ninth round of the Major League Draft by the Cleveland Indians and reached the High A level during his professional career playing from 2007 to 2010. A native of Philipsburg, Penn., White graduated from Penn State University in 2012 with a Bachelors of Education.

Coaching Staff Wes Davis

Director of Baseball Operations - Sixth Season The 2014 season will be the sixth for Wes Davis on the ORU coaching staff. Davis is in his fourth year as Director of Operations after previously spending two years as volunteer assistant. Davis came to ORU prior to the 2009 season after spending the previous four years as assistant coach at the University of Texas at Tyler. In his current role Davis supervises all student managers and oversees day-to-day operations of the baseball office. He also handles baseball finances, works on the annual Alumni game every fall, and serves as director of the Ballpark Baseball Academy Baseball Camps.

Davis has also been involved with various summer baseball teams. He spent two summers as head coach of the Florence Red Wolves of the Coastal Plain League, where he led the team to a first-half division crown and a playoff appearance in 2008. The previous summer, Davis served as the hitting coach of the Wilson Tobs of the CPL, who also advanced to the playoffs. Davis also acted as hitting coach in 2005 for the Kenai Peninsula Oilers of the Alaskan Baseball League. Davis spent two years playing collegiately at Seward County CC in Liberal, Kan., and then wrapped up his playing career at Oklahoma Baptist, where he helped lead the squad to a NAIA regional appearance in 2004. Davis and his wife, Kara, welcomed a son, Major, in August of 2012.

Jacob Newby

Assistant Athletic Trainer - First Season Jacob Newby joined the ORU athletic training staff in the fall of 2013 after five years across town at the University of Tulsa where he worked with the men’s basketball and track & field programs. Serves primary athletic trainer for the Golden Eagle’s baseball and men’s soccer programs.

Prior to his time at TU, Newby served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at UNLV, where he served as the head trainer of the baseball team. He also was the head athletic trainer at Impact Basketball (Las Vegas, Nev.), an athletic training intern with the Kansas City Chiefs, and a student athletic trainer at Kansas State University. Newby earned bachelor’s degrees in Kinesiology and Athletic Training from Kansas State University in 2005, and his master’s degree in Kinesiology from UNLV in 2008. Newby is a certified trainer with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Athletic Director Mike Carter

Athletic Director 20th Season To say Mike Carter had his work cut out for him when he accepted the director of athletics position at Oral Roberts University on Nov. 7, 1994, is quite an understatement. It was hard enough for Carter to leave a successful business and sports law practice to embark on a career change. But combined that with the fact ORU was just beginning its second year back to active NCAA Division I status with only three full-time support personnel and no conference affiliation, and his endeavor was even more challenging. However, more than 18 years later, it’s clear that Carter’s vision and guidance -- along with a strong commitment to athletics by the University -- has led the department to dramatic enhancements and unprecedented success. His leadership earned him the 2011-12 Division I Central Region Under Armour AD of the Year honors. Under Carter’s leadership, the department is now properly staffed with support personnel. During his tenure he has developed positions in athletic development, business administration, compliance, academic services, sports medicine, strength training, marketing and media relations. All of these support services have proven to be necessary for ORU to compete successfully in today’s world of Division I athletics. Across the board, each athletic program has thrived with Carter at the helm. That success can be traced directly to the fact that Carter has chosen outstanding coaches and administrators to lead the Golden Eagle athletic programs. Another key component in ORU’s recent athletic success was the acceptance into the Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference) on July 1, 1997. The formal announcement was made on Sept. 17, 1996, and came after years of hard work and dedication by Carter and University leaders. Beginning in 2012-13, Carter leads the Golden Eagles into a new age as the department moves from the Summit League into the Southland Conference.

While in the Summit League, the Golden Eagles were a perennial favorite for the league’s Commissioner’s Cup, awarded to the league’s best overall athletic department. ORU captured nine Cups in 15 years. Over the past 16 years the Golden Eagles have totaled 79 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT appearances, two WNIT appearances, 84 All-America selections, and four Olympians. In 2008, track & field athlete Andretti Bain became ORU’s first national champion in any sport when he captured NCAA titles in both the indoor and outdoor 400 meters. Bain went on to win a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics as part of the Bahamian 4x400 meter relay team. Pole vaulter Jack Whitt became the second National Champion, winning the 2012 Outdoor Pole Vault Championship. ORU’s athletic success hasn’t just been limited to wins on the field. The Golden Eagles have been extremely successful in the classroom as well, earning an overall GPA of 3.0 or better in 15 out of the last 16 years. Part of the reason for those honors was Carter’s creation of the Eli Academic Learning Center, one of the many facility upgrades he has directed. Others include the construction and/or improvement of the volleyball, baseball, basketball and soccer facilities. New locker rooms, playing surfaces, sound systems, signage, and additional seating have assured ORU that its athletic facilities can rival most NCAA Division I universities.

Athletic Director Yet, Carter isn’t resting on his laurels. New men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms, women’s basketball offices and a sports medicine facility in the Mabee Center have been constructed. ORU opened the Golden Eagle Sports Complex in 2006, a multi-purpose facility located at J.L. Johnson Stadium which features a 2,500-square foot strength and conditioning center; the Grand Slam Room; and new offices for the baseball coaching staff. A 35,000-square foot indoor practice facility opened as part of the Golden Eagle Sports Complex in the summer of 2009. The Mabee Center basketball arena received a new state-of-the-art video scoreboard in the fall of 2008. All of these enhancements have been made in an effort to maintain ORU’s athletic success, and advance to the next level in the near future. Carter and his wife, Paula have two grown children, Lizz and Cason, and two grandchildren. They are also the parents of late son, Scott, who died in December 1993 of childhood cancer.

Administrative Staff Rhonda Fowler

Associate AD / Senior Woman Administrator 28th Season Rhonda Fowler has served the ORU Athletics Department for more than 25 years. Fowler served as the manager of the athletic ticket office from 1974-86, then returned to ORU in September of 1997 as the Athletic Business Administrator. In between, she worked in the corporate sector as a certified legal analyst.

In January of 2000, she was promoted to her current position of Associate Athletic Director of Business, and Senior Woman Administrator. In that role, Fowler is responsible for all athletic personnel budgets and financial matters, including arranging team travel for each sport. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Fowler ensures the representation of female student-athlete’s interests on the campus of ORU, the Southland Conference and on the national level.

Scott Higgins

Associate AD / Marketing 15th Season Scott Higgins joined the ORU Athletic Department in February, 2000 after a three-year stint as a sports anchor for KOTV, Channel 6. At ORU, Higgins oversees the athletic department’s marketing efforts, which include ticket sales, advertising, radio and television packages, game operations and sponsorships.

Higgins is the Southland Conference representative for the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators and is a member of the Rotary Club of Tulsa. Higgins is a longtime Tulsa resident who graduated from Jenks High School in 1983 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Oklahoma State University in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in Radio/TV/Film – News and Public Affairs.

As part of his duties, Higgins also hosts the “ORU Sports Report” television show, which airs weekly on KGEB Channel 53 in Tulsa and around the world on ORU’s digital media platforms.

Higgins married the former Dawn Burmaster in 1987. They live in Tulsa and have three sons, Troy, Sean and Ryan.

Administrative Staff Sean Dolan

Associate AD / Development 2nd Season Sean Dolan joined the ORU staff in October, 2012, as the Associate A.D./Development. Dolan directs capital fundraising, major gifts and other sources of revenue generation and strategic initiatives for the Golden Eagles. Prior to joining the staff at ORU, Dolan was the Director of Project Management for Builders Steel and Crane Company, managing projects in excess of 5 million dollars. Dolan also spent time working with Cedar Ridge Country Club, and the Golf Club of Oklahoma, assisting in various operations of the clubs.

“When I began the hiring process for this position, I was looking for a high-character person who knew Tulsa and was connected in this community,” said Carter. “I believe we found exactly that person in Sean. He is a great fit for our department and we are happy to have him join our staff.” Dolan is the secretary/treasurer of the Cedar Ridge Country Club board, and also serves as the president of the Broken Arrow Youth Basketball Association. He also served as a co-chair for the Sooner Chapter Cystic Fibrosis Charity Golf Tournament from 2006-2012, helping raise more than 1.4 million dollars. Along with his wife of 19 years, Jeni, Dolan has three kids, Brady (16), Logan (12) and Peyton (6).

Blake Freeland

Assistant AD / Media Relations 3rd Season Hired as the Assistant A.D. for Media Relations in July of 2011, Blake Freeland joined the Oral Roberts staff from Charleston Southern University, where he served in a number of capacities in the sports information office over the span of seven years. Most recently being named the Assistant A.D. for Media. During his career of more than 10 years, Freeland had aided in the publicity of a national champion, numerous AP All-American selections including 2012 men’s basketball selection, Dominique Morrison.

Immediately after moving to ORU, Freeland went to work improving all facets of the Media Relations operations. In his first two years, he increased the size and content of the five existing media guides, including men’s and women’s basketball and baseball, and the department is producing publications for men’s golf, women’s golf and cross country for the first time. Additionally, Freeland has overseen an increase in the number of live events streamed through ELIve, upgrading the quality as well with the use of graphics, as well as play-by-play for baseball broadcasts. Freeland received his degree from Oklahoma State in 2005. He resides in Tulsa with his wife, Katie, and their two-year old son, Beckett.

Administrative Staff Rob Walden

Assistant Director of Media Relations 3rd Season Rob Walden is in his third season as the Assistant Director of Media Relations at Oral Roberts University. In his position, Walden oversees the publicity efforts for the Golden Eagle volleyball, women’s basketball and tennis programs. He also serves as a secondary play-byplay announcer for ORU women’s basketball games, including the team’s 2011 Women’s NIT run. Walden came to ORU from the University of West Florida, in Pensacola. While at UWF, Walden was instrumental in boosting the school’s audio and video broadcast efforts. Walden oversaw the launch of UWF’s athletic video broadcast package, leading the online streaming of more than 70 UWF sporting events during the 2010-11 season.

A native of Woodruff, S.C., Walden has experience in athletic media relations at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Walden graduated from Newberry College in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, and he served as a Sports Information Student Assistant in each of his four years at the Newberry, S.C. institution. In 2011, Walden obtained an M.S. in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. As a Sports Information Intern at Charleston Southern University in 2009-10, Walden served as the primary media relations contact for the Buccaneers’ baseball and golf teams, and he also served as a secondary contact for football and men’s basketball. Prior to his year at Charleston Southern, Walden spent one year at Brevard College during the school’s first season as an official Division II institution in the South Atlantic Conference. At Brevard he produced and hosted all radio broadcasts for football, basketball and baseball as well as leading the department’s media relations efforts.

Richard McCutchen Assistant AD / Marketing 7th Season Richard McCutchen is in his seventh season with the ORU athletic department and his second as the Assistant AD for Marketing. McCutchen has played an integral role in the transformation of ORU athletic marketing efforts since he arrived on campus in January of 2007. The Tulsa native created ORU’s first Game Operations Marketing Plan, expanded ORU’s Kids Club and advertising efforts, consulted the department during its purchase of a new center-hung video scoreboard for the Mabee Center and dramatically increased the amount of in-game giveaways and promotions at ORU athletic events.

In his new role as Assistant Athletic Director, McCutchen coordinates all of the athletic department’s marketing efforts. He also manages the department’s ticketing operations. Prior to joining the ORU athletic department, McCutchen served as a Marketing Services Coordinator for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets of the National Basketball Association. In his role with the Hornets, McCutchen coordinated and executed all in-arena promotional events and giveaways and managed the team’s game night marketing staff. McCutchen is a 2005 graduate of Oklahoma State University, where he earned his B.S. in business administration.

Administrative Staff Kyle Jones

Associate AD / Academics 8th Season Kyle Jones is beginning his eighth year as the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics, and is eighth on staff at ORU. His current responsibilities include overseeing the academic progress of the student-athletes, acting as a liaison between Professors and the athletic department and overseeing the Life Skills/community service component of the athletic department. Prior to his role in Athletic Academics Jones served for two years as the Assistant Director of Compliance at ORU under Associate AD Ralph Manning.

Before returning to his alma mater in the fall of 2006, Jones was the men and women’s golf head coach at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C., from 2004-2006. Prior his time at Mars Hill, in addition to owning a business, Jones was the golf coach at Asheville Christian Academy and was an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at Owen High School in Black Mountain, N.C. Jones earned a Bachelors of Arts in History from ORU in 2001 and a Masters of Management from ORU in 2009. He lives in Tulsa with his wife, the former Allison Linder (ORU ‘01), their daughter Caroline and son Hayden.

Terry Unruh

Faculty Athletics Representative 17th Season In his 17th year as ORU’s NCAA faculty representative, Terry Unruh ensures the academic integrity and institutional control of the ORU athletic department. He serves as the liason between ORU’s athletic department and the academic faculty, and he assists all Golden Eagle student-athletes in their academic endeavors. Unruh is an assistant professor of accounting at ORU, where he has been teaching since 1980. He served on several committees, and has been co-advisor for the Accounting Society since 1980.

Unruh also serves as a faculty advisor for ORU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, guiding student-athlete leaders as they volunteer in service projects and shape the athletic experience at ORU. In the 1983-84, 1989-90, and 2003-04 academic years, he was named ORU’s Outstanding Faculty Member. Unruh is a certified public accountant who earned his B.S. and M.B.A. from ORU. From 1974-77, he pitched for the ORU baseball team. He has been married since 1977 to the former Kim Clift. They have one child, Andrea.

Athletic Training Staff Brett Scott

Director of Marketing / Athletics Events 2nd Season Brett Scott is in his second season as the Director of Marketing for the ORU athletic department. Scott coordinates and executes all in-stadium promotional activities for ORU’s 16 intercollegiate sports. Scott also works with ORU’s athletic sponsors, helping local businesses and fans join the Golden Eagle team.

Scott spent the summer of 2010 interning in the ORU athletic department. During his previous stint in Tulsa, Scott organized and coordinated the department’s summer golf tournament fundraisers and worked in game operations for the 2010 Summit League Baseball Tournament.

Scott comes to ORU from Pittsburg State University, where he was a marketing graduate assistant for two seasons. At PSU, Scott was responsible for pregame setup for all home athletic events, and he worked with student-athletes and coaches to develop the athletic department’s student-athlete handbook.

Scott is a 2011 graduate of Oklahoma State University, where he worked as a student assistant in the OSU athletic department ticket office. In December of 2012, he obtained his M.S. in health, human performance and recreation from Pittsburg State.

Scott has also interned with the Oklahoma City All-Sports Association, working in game operations for the 2010 Big 12 Conference Baseball Tournament and the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series.

John Joslin

Director of Sports Medicine 6th Season John Joslin has been at ORU since 2008, and is in his sixth athletic season as the school’s Director of Sports Medicine. Joslin supervises all athletic training and sports medicine efforts for each of ORU’s 16 intercollegiate teams. Joslin travels with ORU’s men’s basketball team, and he is often present at ORU home events in every sport. Joslin came to ORU after spending three years as Head Athletic Trainer for the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Developmental League.

Joslin gained valuable experience as Head Athletic Trainer for the Tulsa Ambush of the National Professional Soccer League from 1991-1992. He also served an internship with the NFL’s New England Patriots in 1986. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the former chairman of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association (1997-2005), Joslin is certified by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision, as well as the NATA. Joslin has a daugther, Mikayla, grandaughter, Cheyenne.

Administrative Staff Emily Calder

Assistant Athletic Trainer 1st Season Emily Calder joined the ORU Sports Medicine staff in August of 2013 after serving two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Kansas. At KU, Calder worked with the swimming and diving programs, and assisted with the athletic training needs for women’s basketball, women’s tennis, football and the KU Relays track and field event.

Calder graduated Suma Cum Laude from Park University with a 3.97 GPA, while earning NAIA Academic All-American honors as the captain of the softball team. While a student, she worked with the Avila University football and men’s basketball programs, the Kansas City Community College men’s soccer and men’s basketball programs and various programs at Park Hill South HS. As a senior, she worked with rehabilitation services at Centerpointe Medical Center.

While in Lawrence, Calder had the opportunity to work with the MLB All-Star Fantasy camp, the Youth Soccer President’s Cup and a number of KU summer camps. While working with the OrthoKansas Orthopedic Group, Calder covered other local high school events. During the summer of 2012, Calder was the Gatorade Camp Manager at the University of Kansas, supervising 25 employees to cover football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, track, soccer, tennis, swimming and volleyball camps.

Bradley Ruhanen

Assistant Director of Sports Performance 3rd Season Bradley Ruhanen is in his third season as the Assistant Director of Sports Performance at Oral Roberts University. Ruhanen came to ORU in September, 2011, joining the Golden Eagles from former Summit League rival North Dakota State, where he was a graduate assistant, working with football, men’s golf, the men’s and women’s throwers, wrestling and softball programs.

Ruhanen graduated from Michigan Tech with a degree in management information systems after finishing up a four-year playing career as a wide receiver, kick returner and punt returner. He was the team captain and named the most outstanding freshman during the 2002 season. An outstanding student, Ruhanen was twice named to the GLIAC All-Academic team. Ruhanen has reached Level 1 Sports Performance Certification through the USAW and is CPR/AED certified.

Before going to NDSU, Ruhanen was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan Technological University for one year. Ruhanen also has experience as a graduate assistant football coach.
