ERIN DULANEY EDWARDS Dear Golden Eagle Friend, School has started, and we are in full swing! Both soccer programs are off to fast starts with wins in front of tremendous crowds at our wonderful Case Soccer Complex. Jonathan Harper finished in the top ten at the Wichita State Cross Country meet. Volleyball also has started and looks to have a great year. Recently, winning the program’s 900th game! This year we hope to continue to build off our 145 conference championships – we have included competition updates, future schedules, and basketball season ticket information. You will also find interviews from some of the players on our fall sports teams as well as what former ORU student-athlete Erin Dulaney Edwards has done with “The Vintage Pearl.” I sincerely hope that you see what great things come from your support of ORU athletics, both present, past, and future. SOCCER 1996-2000 The owner of The Vintage Pearl took time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions for us. Tell us about your family. My husband, Ryan, and I have four great kids. All four attend Victory Christian School across the street from ORU. Caleb is 14 and in high school this year. He plays football, basketball, and baseball. Jonah is 12 and in the 7th grade. He enjoys football, basketball, baseball, and guitar. Tessa is our 10 year old girl. She is very active in soccer and also enjoys basketball, tumbling and anything she can be involved in. Eden, seven, is our “full of energy” child. She does anything and everything big sister does!! What are your most fond memories of your time at ORU? Staying in the dorms and being so close to new friends and teammates was a great experience. I also met my husband there in my first semester, so that made all four years memorable. Going to a university where I could play Division I soccer, but also enjoy a Christian atmosphere was awesome. I really enjoyed the opportunity to attend chapel services and grow. I did not realize or appreciate it then, but looking back it was such a blessing. How did the scholarship impact your life? I was blessed to be on scholarship all four years. Both my husband and I graduated

from ORU with less than $5000 in student loans!! It was a blessing!! How did you come up with the idea for your business? It was simply a God idea. I was a stay at home mom, looking for a little extra spending money. I was looking for a creative outlet, and it just keep growing and moving forward. Hard work, dedication, and great friends made a big difference. Would you tell us a little about the Vintage Pearl? M
egan Guico’s journey to ORU started her junior year of high school, when the ORU soccer coach contacted her after a tournament in Atlanta. The junior midfielder from San Diego came to campus for her recruiting visit and knew this was where she was supposed to be. She had never heard of ORU and wouldn’t have if it weren’t for soccer. Megan feels it is God’s plan for her to be here. Has there been a defining moment in your life that made you pursue soccer? I think I inherited the love of it from my dad. My dad has one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever seen and seeing just how much he loves the game -- I also love that. I’ve played all types of sports since I was young but I stuck with soccer. I tore my ACL in eighth and ninth grade, and I thought I was done, but I missed it a lot. I started playing along with my brother for fun, and I thought I wanted to do this for as long as I can. After overcoming those injuriesI knew this is what I wanted to do.
What is the most rewarding part of being an ORU Soccer player? I think the community. ORU has a great community. Athletics is a great community. I think it’s only growing. To play soccer and remember that soccer is only a game in this material world and to know that this is just our way of glorifying God is probably the best part of being part of ORU soccer. Just remembering and giving glory to God. It’s not about us, them, or the game, it’s about what we do it for. What does your scholarship mean to you? It got me all the way out here. I would have never left California. I’ve got great friends, great support, I can call my coach, my team here and that’ll stay forever. The education and everything that has been growing in me the past two years I’ve been here, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I wouldn’t have gone anywhere else. I would’ve grown somewhere else, but not like this. It’s changed my view on the world and I’ve grown spiritually in ways I’ve never imagined. What would you say to your donors if you could thank them personally? Thanks for the support. Thanks for believing in me. A lot of athletes that I know, a lot of people don’t give you a reason to believe in them, but I would hope that that person can see everything that their money has been put into. All the effort, the people, everything that they’ve done for our program and the athletic department. It’s, it’s amazing to see. I hope that they can see it. I would try to explain it to them how much it’s worth but there is just no way to put it into words.

t’s 2,200 miles from ORU to the place Edgardo Mira calls home. Majoring in Health and Exercise Science, the senior midfielder did what any normal kid did in his neighborhood -- he played soccer.
Describe your journey from El Salvador to ORU. It’s a long trip. I grew up in El Salvador, and I started playing soccer in my neighborhood. By the age of 12, I got scouted by a foundation called FESA, which basically picks out the best players in the country in the early ages. They take them to a boarding school where they practice, eat, study, where the idea of form display at the highest level. Then they take them out of the country. When I was 12, I left my family’s house and started playing soccer. For eight years, I was traveling around the world and playing soccer. Four years ago, I ended up in the USA, playing in Texas, and got recruited by ORU. What’s the most rewarding part of playing soccer for ORU?I think getting to know the different people around campus. I think it opens doors to not only meet people in athletics but also meet people outside, which is very abnormal. Once you’re an athlete you are always meeting athletes, but what I think is also amazing about it is that we have a university where all the people are always trying to get involved. So I think it opens doors to meet new people. You learn more about yourself when you are around people who aren’t necessarily athletic. What does your scholarship mean to you? It means everything. It means that it’s something that I’ve earned through hard work and is what keeps me going every single year. It’s where I come from I never would have thought that I would have had the possibility to play soccer and earn my degree at the same time. Where I come from it’s either you play soccer or you study. And being to able to do both, both things that I love, is just an amazing opportunity that God provided me. What would you say to the people who are providing you with your scholarship if you could thank them personally? I would just say thank you so much for believing in me, not only in me, but in all the athletes that come to this university. Thank you for seeing more than just talent but for seeing something good inside of us as a person, as human beings, for the opportunity to develop, and for their trust in order to make them proud. To represent the university and to make sure that we are getting better in our spiritual life.
