Informal settlements across Mumbai suffer from an incredible lack of social and physical infrastructure. A lack of access to public toilets, water taps, schools, health clinics, open spaces and other basic amenities are some of the major problems that slum dwellers face today. Unfortunately, the current policy for slum improvement in the city focuses solely on the production of houses, with little to no regard for the provision of other facilities that these people so crucially require. This project attempts to address precisely this problem. Rather than resort to the typical master plan that involves primarily the construction of new housing, our idea is to take a closer look at the site and address its problems of social and physical infrastructure through a series of small interventions.

Barefoot School of Craft, 2017

IND Studio

Our proposal for the Serendipity Barefoot School of Crafts takes inspiration from the typical vernacular architecture one can find throughout the state. The “Balcao” – a verandah-like space, the courtyard and sloping roofs are commonly found throughout Goa, not just in homes but also in public buildings. Our intention is to refer to these age-old elements, but in a contemporary manner. In our proposal we have chosen to focus on two main crafts – cane furniture and pottery. Both these find a place in Goa’s culture, but one that is rapidly diminishing. While it is the intention to provide workshop spaces for learning and production, it is also our aim to design a pavilion that uses only locally found materials in a manner that is sustainable, while also exhibiting the potential of local unskilled labour that is found in this region. The pavilion itself can be used both for temporary purposes (demountable and transportable), but can work equally well as a building with a life span of 3-5 years without much maintenance. Since the site is the state of Goa itself, one of our early decisions was to avoid using a very strict geometrical form and instead use a more irregular organic shape that would better fit into any context – whether it be a local town square or a remote paddy field.

The Balcao - a typical Goan architectural element wraps around the whole design and provides shade and shelter.

4 clear entrances marked by steps (built of red laterite brick) take visitors through the in-between Balcao space into the Crafts School.

A 9m x 6m space is used as the classroom and can accommodate upto 40 people at a time.

A 3m x 3m room enclosed by movable bamboo shutters can be used for team meetings and discussions.

Roof: 6 inverted pyramidal structures made of inexpensive corrugated metal panels (painted white to reflect sunlight and reduce heat intake) collect rain water that is channelled to underground water cannisters. Roof Structure:

Elevation A

The roof projects beyond the inner working spaces to provide necessary shade and shelter. Made up of a delicate system of steel beams and joists. This pattern will be clearly visible from the interior of the School. Inner Structure: Each of these working spaces is composed on a grid of 3m x 3m, are constructed with bamboo mats and split-bamboo’s. Designed as folding shutters, these allow for maximum flexibility for different functions.

Elevation B

Balcao: By raising the flooring by 450mm above ground level, the structure is protected from seasonal flooding. Following age-old principles of Goan architecture, a Balcao forms the in-between space between the public and private spaces. Bamboo Facade: The facade is made from locally produced bamboo. This protects the inner working spaces from direct sunlight, and helps create a typical Goan “balcao” verandah-like space. Varying densities indicate openings and entrances into the school.

Section A

Rain Water Harvesting: Below ground level, a series of water cannisters store rain water collected from the roof. These are then pumped into the service cavity wall and used for various daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, watering and of course for production.

National War Memorial, 2016

IND Studio

Earth, water and sky are the only elements one encounters when they arrive at the memorial space. Conceived of as a large circular wall sunk 8 meters below ground level and open to the sky, the memorial is essentially a composition of 3 elements: ramps, arches and walls. At its centre lies the Ashoka Chakra, a point from where lines emerge to indicate important events along the memorial wall. Designed as a timeline, this inner marble wall marks important wars and battles giving visitors a comprehensive overview of Indian military history. An information centre, toilets and a tunnel connecting to the National War Museum are all located on this level. Throughout the design there is a careful use of materials and a focus on sustainability. Rainwater will be collected and used for the reflecting pool in the memorial and natural stones will be employed for all surfaces.

The intention of the exhibition was to pay tribute to Charles Correa’s legacy as one of the most prominent and inspiring authorities on housing design as well as highlight the main concerns and themes that guided his work. Through drawings, photographs and sketches from the Charles Correa Archives, as well as models produced at the Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft, the exhibition will chart the development of Correa’s ideas on housing, from his seminal Tube House linear model, based on the idea of a climate-responsive architecture, to the complex courtyard clusters of Belapur, focusing on the ideas of creating community and opportunities for growth and change.

School around a Courtyard

IND Studio

Taking on the shape of a simple courtyard building, thick mud walls with strategically shaped openings greatly improve thermal insulation, and help draw in light and air. The resulting cave-like interiors (on the exterior and interior) become spaces for inhabitation - sometimes for learning and sometimes for play. A double-roof system, consisting of simple bamboo strips on the bottom and a larger sloping corrugated metal roof on the top further improve the school’s micro-climate. The entire project was designed with the intention of employing local members of the community, with the hope that this project would become a catalyst for further such construction, and that the school itself would become a central focal point within the village.

Research

PAD (Platform for Affordable Dwellings)

IND Studio

A database in the initial stages of compilation on affordable dwellings across the world founded by TU Delft. As part of the research based in India , we studied not only the design by the architect but also the adaptations dwellers have made to accommodate their changing lifestyles and aspirations in the form of extensions. In this study we realised the role good architecture plays in keeping cultural and family traditions in foresight whilst designing and thus allowing inhabitants to build better communities and the architecture to remain timeless.

B.Arch Thesis

This Thesis began with the study of the village of Loutolim. A typical Goan village ,characterised by a series of interwoven networks of nature and the built form ,bound by a network of small winding roads, shaded by dense vegetation and embedded with a mishmash of the contemporary and vernacular homes. Traditionally the village played a vital role in the formation of the early society with local identities of people being strongly rooted to the village they belonged to and part of this can be attributed to the century old policy of the Comunidade. Today however with the declining role of the Comunidades and new policies as well as the old of land ownerships there are scenarios of villages losing their identity. The policy of the concerned authorities needs an adaptation and so do the age old Comunidade systems to perhaps stretch out its role to not only create a unison with land to the people but also a right to have unison with the soul and essence of the village too. A village is defined by the community and homes that contain it and the reintegration of the Comunidade to strengthen and create new networks is one of the ways of ensuring that the fabric that holds these communities together will remain the same. Through a harvest policy plan of 5 year cycles of selected crops, this thesis looks at the provision of sustainable job creation in the local market which can be backed by the state government through subsidies under the initiative of eco-tourism. The Comunidade facilitates at the local level through provisions of land for assembly and cultivation etc.

Formation of Comunidades

With the new demands of taxes, a new community called kunbis migrated and were emplyed as manual labour in the field.

The aim of the Portguese was to maximise returns (taxes) from the lands they ruled which had to be collectively paid irrespective of cropfailure. The responsibility of payment lay with the main villages who had to pay up even if there was default by some other village. The land lease of the defaulting village was auctioned. e

Majority of the Gaunkar i ’s have migrated abroad and return only post retirement. Many have abandoned their ancestral homes.

1510-1961

P R E The Gaunkaris belonged tothe priestly caste and were mainly employed in religious bodies and were property owners. The Sudras were mainly carpenters, masons and worked in the fields.

Gaunkaris being educated took up administrative jobs in the Portuguese Government. Many of them sent their kids to Portugal for fur ther education. Sudras were allowed to purchase shares from the communidades now as they were already tenants and managed the paddy fields.

After 1961, there has been a complete loss of powers of the communidades. There have been two changes which are significant. On the one hand they have lost their political and administrative position in the villages to the panchayats. And on the other they have lost most of their lands especially the khazans which were under tenant cultivation with the passage of the Agricultural Tenancy Act (1964) which extended land ownership rights to the lease holders of the Comunidade clearly violating Article 294 and 295 of the Constitution of India and Ar ticle 6 5 2 of the Code of C omunidades.
