ONE CARRY-ON

Early evening in a Salt Lake City airport bar, waiting out a layover inbound for the Bahamas. Must have been 2009. I can’t bear the thought of arriving at a long-anticipated destination and my gear not arriving too, so I’m looking down at three carry-ons. One for rods. One for reels, a jacket, and more bonefish flies, leaders, and tippet than I’d probably need. A third backpack carried that laptop I couldn’t seem to get away from in those days—all while knowing full well I’m only allowed two pieces of carry-on luggage. Had to be a way to consolidate a trip’s worth of tackle into a single convenient unit, so I finished my Mount Gay and started scribbling on a bar napkin. Six marked-up SLC bar napkins later, the idea for our industry-original Orvis Carry-It-All was born. I keep two loaded at all times, one for graband-go freshwater trips and one for the salt. I still haven’t managed to ditch the laptop, though it’s used more for checking tides and weather patterns now. And in spite of retirement, they still remember my name at the Help Desk.”

Because it is a tailwater, the water is generally clear, and sight fishing for these aggressive fish can be highly productive at certain times of year. Lincoln Westby began his guiding career in 1971, working for nearly every lodge in Southern Belize and absorbing every bit of knowledge he could. In 1997, he opened Blue Horizon Lodge, with his wife Pearline, a driving force behind the vi sion for the lodge. Today, at 79 years old, with over 2,000 permit to hand, Lincoln is considered the “permit master” and has gained legendary status in the world of fly fishing. Why permit? Because they are smart and sneaky, requiring excellent fishing skills from the angler and the guide. With unbelievable sight, hearing, smell, and intelligence, this fish can elude even the most seasoned professional.

Still the head guide at Blue Horizon, he loves being on the water and helping guests catch permit. Few other guides have been able to retain their passion for fishing for as long as he has. You won’t hear him complaining about anything… because he plain loves it. He has led seminars and lectures about fishing for permit and conserving their habitat in Belize and has trained dozens of the top guides in Belize.

Lincoln is now focusing on his legacy and is passing on his knowledge to the next generation of fishing guides through the Junior Guide program at Blue Horizon Lodge. My favorite concurrence of time and place occurs in a New England October, when the first hard frosts have come by night, and the hillside trees are nearly bare. It is then that I take up a gun again and go looking in earnest for grouse and woodcock. This pursuit compels me into places that are overlooked for good reason: these are the forgotten fence rows and overgrown orchards, places tangled up and thorny and filled with boot-sucking mud. They are not easy places, but magical ones. To frequent them, a grouse and woodcock hunter requires equal parts fortitude and whimsy, intent, and indifference. He or she also needs the right gear. What is shown is my personal pick for gear, time-tested and duly considered. These are the tools of the trade, the products that work. They’ve seen me through some glorious days, and some regrettable slogs through barren woodlands. They’ve kept me warm, dry, and relatively un-bloodied, though a few battle scars are requisite tokens of any good day afield. I stand behind these products; they’ve made my Octobers a little bit better, which is a feat in itself. It is hard to improve on perfection.

the Orvis Company held its first Wingshooting School on a farm near Manchester, Vermont. The goal of the school was to provide students with a solid foundation in safe and effective shotgunning that would inspire a lifetime of successful days afield. As an increasing number of students passed through the Orvis School, word spread quickly about the quality of instruction and the welcoming nature of the experience. Today, 50 years and several thousand students later, Orvis continues to offer best-in-class shooting instruction at venues across the US, most notably at the Orvis Shooting Grounds at Sandanona (NY), Hill Country (PA), and Pursell Farms (AL). A growing record of graduates has taken their education to the uplands, wetlands, and clays courses, realizing in the shooting sports a unique vehicle for building lasting connections in the outdoors. Orvis is humbled to have helped facilitate the countless memories that have been made as a result; we can only imagine what the next 50 years will bring.

The Legacy of Orvis Guns will reach a new milestone in 2023, but we are saddened that our friend, longstanding Orvis Gunsmith Jordan Smith will not be there to see the new Gunroom take shape. After 42 years of service at the bench, and two short years of retirement, Jordan passed away in August of 2022. His commitment to both customers and craft are a piece of the legacy that Orvis guns will carry on. He is, and will be, sorely missed.

To make that experience as memorable as possible, Orvis has decided to break ground on a Flagship Gunroom at Orvis Sandanona in Millbrook, NY. The new Gunroom will feature a deluxe showroom with 1000-sq. ft. of retail gun space showcasing a curated assortment of new and pre-owned guns. Secure gun storage, dedicated consultation and sales space, and detached gunsmithing facility will accompany. Customers will have the unique opportunity not only to browse a world-class collection of guns, but also to use the Sandanona shooting facility to demo guns for sale or to drop off repair work with our own on-site gunsmith. Essentially, the new Flagship Gunroom at Orvis Sandanona will offer the same best-in-class gun sales and service experience that Orvis has become known for but in grand scale. We anticipate the project to be complete and a ribbon-cutting in Spring 2023.
