Mount Dora Someplace Special

Surrounded by nearly 1,400 small lakes, Mount Dora is a vibrant, growing community that retains the authentic flavor of Old Florida. Just a stone’s throw from Orlando, Mount Dora offers all the conveniences of a nearby big city while retaining its small-town charm and close-knit family feeling. Mount Dora is named after Dora Ann Drawdy, an early settler to this area in the mid-1800s. Impressed with her hospitality, visiting surveyors named Lake Dora in her honor in 1846. The town, originally known as Royellou, decided to take its name from the lake in 1883. “Mount” was added to highlight the fact that the town resides on a plateau 184 feet above sea level, an unusual feature for land in Florida. Initially, Mount Dora was a popular winter retreat for hunters, fishermen and boaters. Our first hotel was the Alexandria, founded in 1883. Ten years later, the hotel changed its name to the Lake House and then in 1903, to the Lakeside Inn. It remains in operation today and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Other recognized historic sites in Mount Dora include: • John P. Donnelly House – Home of Mount Dora’s first mayor • Mount Dora Historic District – Bounded by 3rd Avenue, 11th Avenue, Clayton Street and Helen Street • Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Station - Now home to the town’s Chamber of Commerce • Blandford – One-time home of William Bland, philanthropist and one of Mount Dora’s most prominent citizens • Witherspoon Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, No. 111 • Mount Dora Lighthouse – the only fresh-water lighthouse in the state of Florida.

As you might guess, Mount Dora is a haven for all kinds of water activities. We’re home to over 310 miles of navigable waterways, perfect for boating, kayaking, canoeing or just sitting peacefully by the shore. Boat and adventure tours are available on Lake Dora and the Harris Chain of Lakes. We recommend that you visit the Dora Canal, described as “the

Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club most beautiful mile of water in the world.” If fishing is your passion, you should know that the Harris Chain of Lakes in known as the Bass Capital of the World. The area is a magnet for pro and amateur anglers with many tournaments held in our area throughout the year. For biking enthusiasts, we offer the Mount Dora Mountain Bike Trail. Built and maintained Grantham Point Park by the Ocala Mountain Bike Association, this challenging 4-mile course offers some sharp turns and fast drops. The track is rated as an intermediate track because of its speed and sudden switchbacks. The course is shaded for most of the journey with breathtaking trees and natural foliage to enhance your ride. 

Palm Island Boardwalk Mount Dora is surrounded by more than a dozen state parks and recreational areas encompassing Lake and nearby Orange Counties. They are all open for public use and exploration. If you’re a real nature lover, a visit to Palm Island Park at the end of Tremain Street is in order. The park is an 8-acre, dogfriendly nature preserve that’s ideal for birdwatching and outdoor hikes along multiple trails. The park also includes a fishing pier, picnic shelters and boardwalk. Annie Donnelly Park, at the intersection of Donnelly St. and 5th Ave., is where many of Mount Dora’s special events, like the annual Light Up Mount Dora celebration during the Christmas season. Located right in the heart of downtown Mount Dora, this park also features tennis, shuffleboard and pickleball courts. Grantham Point Park, adjacent to Gilbert Park, is often referred to as Lighthouse Park because of its 35-foot lighthouse that helps boaters navigate Lake Dora after dark. The lighthouse, by the way, is the only inland freshwater lighthouse in the state. 24

Certainly one of the most unique museums anywhere, the Modernism Museum Mount Dora on E. 4th Avenue is also one of the city’s newest attractions. Maintained by the Mount Dora Historical Society, the museum focuses on the significant people and events in Mount Dora from 1880 to 1930. Community Building Mount Dora has long had an outstanding reputation as a center for the arts. Our city is home to a diverse collection of art galleries, studios, theaters, museums and other cultural centers dedicated to artistic expression and creative freedom. Initially founded by a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting fine art, the Mount Dora Center for the Arts (MDCA) has grown into a multifaceted community center complete with gallery exhibitions and art education programs for all ages and levels. Once a haven for retirees, Mount Dora has seen its population take on greater diversity as the rapid growth of the Central Florida region in general has served to attract a wide variety of newcomers to our area. Mount Doraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population was only 623 people in 1920. A decade later, it had actually declined to just 612 in 2017, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated that more than 13,900, people call Mount Dora home. The median age continues to grow younger as the area gains more families with children as well as young professionals who move here for a less crowded, more leisurely pace of life. According to the most recent census, there are 4,123 households of which 21.1% had children under the age of 18. Just under half (48.6%) of our homes are occupied by married couples, while 11.0% were single parent households. The average household size was 2.22 people and the average family size was 2.75. Our population is pretty evenly divided by age and gender: 0-18: 20.5% 18-24: 6.4% 25-44: 21.7% 45-64: 24.2% 65-Older: 27.2% Female: 54% Male: 46%

Pet-Friendly Places

Piglet’s Pantry Mount Dora attracts new residents and visitors of the fourlegged variety too! Take a stroll downtown or visit any of our pet-friendly parks and you’ll discover this for yourself. As such, we have many places to stay as well as lots of local businesses that are pet-friendly. According to a recent survey, you can find more than 75 Hotels/Motels in the area that will welcome your fur babies. There are also vacation cottages and home rentals where pets can bring their humans. As always, make sure you inquire about whether or not pets are welcome and what extra charges you may incur when you’re making your lodging reservations.

While a few merchants may have water available for your pet, it always recommended that you carry a supply of water with you when walking your best friend, particularly during the warm summer months. Also, make sure you bring doggie bags with you so you can clean up after your pet. While Mount Dora is very pet-friendly, you should be aware that during outdoor events requiring street closures, such as our annual Art Festivals, pets are not allowed in the closed event area by law. 

Most, but not all, of our downtown businesses allow pets. But all that do require the pet to be on a leash and under control. Some require you hold you pet in your arms. Businesses may not always have a sign posted indicating they are pet-friendly, so make sure you ask before taking your pet inside. Most of our restaurants with outdoor seating also allow pets. But again, ask first. A stone’s throw from our historic downtown area there is an off-leash dog park, just behind the Ice House Theater at the corner of Unser Street and 11th Avenue.

Healthcare is a vital component of any community.
