Someplace Special Founded in 1880 by an early female settler named Dora Ann Drawdy, Mount Dora is known for its small town charm combined with many shops and restaurants. This historic village in the heart of Central Florida overlooks the shores of the beautiful Lake Dora and is surrounded by about 1,400 other small lakes. The “mount” in Mount Dora reflects that the town sits on a plateau 184 feet above sea level.

In 1928 when lawn bowling was first proposed, the outdoor sport became widely popular and soon, the Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club came to be. Today it is the largest USLBA-affiliated club in the country with more than 315 members. With multiple activities offered at Lincoln Avenue Community Park, it’s no wonder this park remains a gem in Mount Dora. This is to many, the “perfect place” to have a picnic for a day or take the children for a little fun! The 35-acre community park contains a swimming pool, 6 tennis courts, 4 baseball/softball fields, 2 racquetball courts, the Mount D.O.R.A Dog Park, and a disc golf course.

A historic landmark of Mount Dora, the John P. Donnelly House is a well preserved Victorian Style structure built in 1893 by John P. Donnelly as a gift to his wife. As a founder of The Yacht Club and Mount Dora’s first official mayor, Mr. Donnelly’s home remains a Special Landmark. ◗

The Modernism Museum Mount Dora has a purpose to inspire those to learn from art, craft and design and use their unique creative talents to enrich their quality of life. Located on 4th Avenue, the museum features pieces such as an exhibition that pays tribute to David Bowie and includes objects from his estate. What used to be the city’s first fire station and city jail in 1923, is now the Mount Dora History Museum. History lovers will enjoy viewing the display of artifacts and learning about historical events of the city from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The museum is a signature project of the Mount Dora Historical Society and plays host to multiple events annually. They are open to the public Tuesday through Sunday 1:00pm-4:00pm. Looking to plan a wedding or a special event? The Mieluz Grand Hall will assist you with that! After only being opened for two years in Mount Dora, this family owned event venue has already made a special impact on the community! Golfing has been a favorite pastime throughout Central Florida, and Mount Dora contains an array of courses where even the most famous golfers have played. Located in the rolling hills of Lake County is the Country Club of Mount Dora. This Par 72, 18-hole course was designed by Lloyd Clifton in 1991 with raised, well-manicured greens guarded by strategically placed sand traps, fairway bunkers and lakes. Many of the holes offer beautiful lake views for any golfer’s enjoyment while playing the game or taking a ride on a golf cart. The Country Club hosts many golf tournaments annually. Just five miles Northwest of Apopka on Highway 441, is Zellwood Station Golf Club. This 18-hole course was designed by George Maddox in 1974 and it includes amazing greens and a hilly terrain. It features 6,500 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Holes 12 through 16 dogleg around a cavernous dry lake nicknamed “Crater Junction”. While Mission Inn Resort & Club is one of Lake County’s largest resorts, it is also known for it’s two golf courses and multiple golf events. The courses are: “El Campeon” (The Champion) and “Las Colinas” (The Hills). Both are well over 100 years old, being built and designed in the 1800s. They are two of the most historic courses in Central Florida. Mission Inn host many Florida high school championships and 16 collegiate events a year. ◗

Located in historic downtown Leesburg on Main Street is Beacon College, a nonprofit liberal arts school. It is America’s first university to award bachelor’s degrees to students with learning disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences that cause these students to struggle in bigger state universities. It was founded in 1989 by a group of parents who were trying to provide education to their kids who struggled because of learning disabilities. “It’s a great place for students with these challenges to come where the pedagogy builds in the support systems, strategies and protocols they need to be successful learners.” said Darryl Owens, Director of Communications. “Beacon is one of only two colleges in America with this dedicated mission.” In 1962, Lake Sumter State College was established to give students in Lake and Sumter Counties an opportunity to gain an advanced education. In January of 2013, they set forth their first baccalaureate degree program, the Bachelors of Applied Science (BAS).
