Post Eid, the party scene in Doha has perked up. GLAM has been busy with fashion shoots, celebrity chit-chats and now that the Doha Tribeca Film Festival is around the corner, we are on our toes, to give you the best! GLAM binged at the hip and happening fashion hub of the Middle-East, Beirut, in September at a four day fashion extravaganza, which was jointly hosted by Mastercard and new fashion department store, Aishti. Come and have a look at the shopping splash we fashioned... Our Be Glam night is in its third season and its success and popularity keeps increasing year after year. Look through our spread to see the who’s who of Doha glamming up the Pearl... This month, we have tripled our efforts, and our ‘Feast for your eyes’ is not one, but three gorgeous guys. And the cherry on the cake, they come together, as a family. Well, you have guessed right, we’re talking about Joe, Nick and Kevin, the Jonas Brothers. You know they are a phenomenon when they have performed at the White House and this boy band has done it twice. Though their success seems like a dream come true, the Jonas brothers have worked hard up the ladder, and the best part is that they do their bit to help the needy too. If you want to know more, read the pages inside... Our fashionista this month is also someone who has undergone a transformation, from being the world’s coolest princess to one of the most stunning young women to hit the big screen. Need more hints...well, she is down to earth, charming and very, very talented...and she is Anne Hathaway! GLAM thinks this month’s Supermodel Daria Werbowy, was born to be a model. She even says that modelling is like a shadow that followed her everywhere since she was eight. And by 14, it seemed like the inevitable could no longer be put off and what followed is history...In July 2007, Daria was listed by Forbes as the ninth highest earning model. She also has her own star on the Canadian Walk of Fame. But the best part is that Daria is one of the few models who know that there is a world outside show biz too... Though we do not want to end on a serious note, being aware is the best way to be and October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness. Celebrities around the world are trying to get the word out; early detection is the best and easiest treatment for the Big C. GLAM urges all its readers to be aware and to spread the message of BC awareness. Be cool and safe...

TALK BACK

Bouquets and brickbats… Twilight Heart-th‘rob’!

I love you guys! Robert Pattinson is my favourite and I always wanted him to be featured in your magazine. You guys made my wish come true. His article was too good and it captured his personality really well. It’s so amazing how a character can become so famous to catapult him towards fame. Thank you! Leena Thomas

Hot n happening!

GLAM is one magazine which has all the elements of fashion embedded in one issue. From beauty products, to celebrity lives, gossips to fashion and style, everything you want to know is present in the magazine. I especially enjoy reading Star Buzz as it’s regarding my favourite topic – celebrity gossip! Jesse Parker

Style guru

GLAM is all about style! I loved reading the Fashion ER article ‘Black is Beautiful’. Black is one colour that might look boring, but it can turn anything into class. I used to be sceptical about wearing black every time, but now I think its one cool colour. Other articles too are worth a read! Hana Mahmoud

A born star A MAGAZINE LIKE GLAM CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Jessica Biel is more than a pretty face and GLAM simply proved that. Her on-screen persona is just as captivating as her off-screen charm. I thought she was incredible in the movie Easy Virtue. Glam has continuously managed to pull out the lives of various celebrities and reveal a new side of them. Dylan Nelly

Fun reading

Each time, Glam amuses me with its variety of scoops, scandals and the buzz in the celebrity world. I have always enjoyed reading Eye Candy and Supermodel. This time’s Eye Candy was Robert Pattinson...and I loved it. Looking forward to have more fun and excitement with GLAM in the months to follow. Vanessa Leigh

Rocking the readers

Glam is a rocking magazine. I just love reading all the crisp and juicy gossips about celebrities. Even the other articles are well-written. For the September issue, i liked the article on Jessica Biel. I think she’s a terrific actress and its been long since I read about her. Apart from the content, its also the layout which appeals to me. A colourful magazine with a vibrant feel. Well done guys! Jamie Lee

HIP& HAPPENING

What’s in, what’s The Layer Tighten on the ‘em up! out & cake everything in between… With Fall fast approaching, and that chilly nip in the air getting under your skin, it’s time to swap the tees for the jackets. This fall stay warm by piling up on the layers. Complement long sleeved tops with cardigans of the singlet variety, and pile on a jacket, just in case. Combine and complement old outfits to create funky new ones. Stay warm ladies!

10

October 2010

Tights are all the rage this season and, well, they look so damn good, can we really blame ‘em? The perfect way to spice up a boring old black dress is to pair it with some patterned funky stockings. What’s more, they come in all sorts! Take your pick from the various sorts of tights arrayed in shop windows; there’s black ones, colourful ones, patterned ones, sheer ones and sparkling ones. Not feeling the love for tights? Why not try your basic knee high sock? They can look smashing if paired with the right sort of dress/skirt! Who says you can’t stay cosy while also looking super feminine?

Yeti Boots

This is this season’s hottest and perhaps most fun trend. Fur clad ‘yeti’ boots are definitely eye catching. Outrageous in their ostentatiousness, these boots are all the rage this fall but still remain a ‘love ‘em or loathe ‘em’ fashion piece. There’s all sorts of styles available. How would you like your fur Ma’am? Knee high? Ankle High? Mid calf? Our verdict? They’re super cute, (as long as the fur is fake!) and certainly turn heads on the street. We say, go for it. Who said fashion isn’t fun? GLAM’s giggling all the way to the store!

(Fake) Fur Fun

...speaking of Yeti Boots, this season, fur is not just assigned to your footwear. No sirree... the urban- warrior chic look has been softened up by designers everywhere. How you ask? Why, they use lots of fur of course! It’s lined inside your jacket, coats the lining of your hoodie or can even be seen adorning those fauz fur vests. It’s luxurious, and very, very chic... just don’t go overboard! The Cat’s-Coughed-Up-A-HairBall look doesn’t do anyone any favours!

CrossBody Bag Me!

They’re small, and super easy to carry; these tiny bags which are a cross between a purse and a very tiny satchel and are good for those days when all you need is some lip stick and a credit card (a girl’s two best friends!). The straps come in different forms- opt for a long chain strap or a more modern take on a string of pearls strap! Thin leather straps also look very youthful. Perfect for a girl’s night out!

Those Fly Jackets

Leather, aviator style jackets are on fire these days. They’re selling like hot cakes and we’re not surprised. Think Grease except this time you get to be John Travolta instead of Olivia Newton John. Muchos more fun, no? These short, cropped, leather fashion darlings can look very feminine and give off that very appealing ‘Good-Girl-Gone-Bad’ look. Go on, girls... it’s time to get your bad on!

Skinny Cargo Pants

This spring trend looks set to continue on into the Fall. Skinny cargo pants are the hipper take on skinny jeans, easily distinguishable from the large oversized pockets placed mid length along the sides of the jeans. Pair these pants with an off the shoulder cardigan, or a mid length tunic, and ladies, we’ve got ourselves some style!

Star Buzz

Oil those vocal cords Pop princess Selena Gomez has revealed the secret to her... ahem... beautiful *snigger* voice. The young popstress drinks a healthy amount of olive oil to keep her vocal cards... oiled. Says Selena, “Before I go on stage, I drink olive oil. It’s disgusting, but it’s good for your throat. Then I grab my band and we do vocal warm ups and dance. After that, we put our hands together and say a little prayer.” That’s taking ‘wholesome kid star’ to a whole new level Selena!

All the gossip, all the dope, all the scandals and some news about all the stars you love…

Idiots Abroad

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s latest comic meandering has led them right down the path of documentaries! The side splittingly funny Ricky’s new show follows ‘round headed’ pal Karl Pilkington around the world – as he gives his verdict on the Seven Wonders of The World. Karl is honest, funny and very very stupid. What can we say? Ricky knows funny when he sees it!

Lively’s not so lively lifestyle Blake Lively, star of teen drama Gossip Girl prefers to spend time at home cooking and watching TV. The young star says she is nothing like Serena the character she plays on Gossip Girl, “I love going to amazing events and wearing beautiful clothes and meeting incredible designers, but I don’t like to go to parties, I like to sit at home, cook, watch movies and listen to fabulous music.” She sounds so... normal. Do we love her more for it? YES!

Star Buzz Judi Dench vs Cruise Carey Mulligan has revealed that when she was a child, she never once fantasised about co starring in a movie alongside Tom Cruise. Nope her guilty pleasure fantasy starrer was none other than Dame Judi Dench. The young star was lucky enough to play alongside the veteran actor when she was starring in Pride and Prejudice. “When I was 15, I’d vivid dreams of acting with Judi Dench - it was never Tom Cruise, always Judi Dench”. Now that’s what we call a dream come true!

Father Daughter love

Lebanese singer Wadee El Safi has finalised filming for his latest music video based on the song, “Ya Binti Qalbi Alaiki” (My daughter I worry about you). The video is very intense and speaks volumes about familial love and good parenting. We’re not surprised though, Wadee has a knack for striking the emotional chord!

Gwen’s Stylish Support

Gwen’s friends and family came out in full force to support the singer cum fashion designer’s fashion collection launch in September. The star strutted down the runway in the clothes designed for L.A.M.B and even had her young son Kingston model some pieces. It was definitely a happy, vibrant affair as the clothes, and the singer, rocked the house. Good vibes all round eh Gwen?

Only for the Talented

Egyptian Superstar Amro Diab has finally opened up a school for the musically gifted. The superstar invites all those who think they have talent to sign up to be part of the talent school. The academy will cater to students from all over the Arab world and two gifted students will be given the chance to produce his forthcoming album. Well... what are you guys waiting for? Go sign up!

Idolise J-Lo

Reportedly J-Lo is the latest in a series of stars to be pitched for the position of newest judge on American Idol, since acerbic tongued Simon’s departure. The star will supposedly be paid 12 million dollars to replace Simon on the show. Will she or won’t she? Only time will tell... but the bigger question is- will J-Lo manage to get Idol’s ratings back up? Well... if Ellen couldn’t do it... we’re guessing J-Lo will have her job cut out for her!

Brand’s Busted!

Russell Brand was arrested before his impending nuptials to honey voiced bride, Katy Perry. The icky haired British comedian was arrested on the 17th of September trying to ‘defend his fiancee’s honour’. The star of Get Him to the Greek assaulted a paparazzo taking Katy’s picture from an unfortunate angle. The cherry on top of the cream? The paparazzo was actually the one who conducted the ‘citizen’s arrest’. Oh dear... we don’t know whether to laugh, or to cry.

Tim Walker and Mulberry presents ‘The Lost Explorer’ After mesmerising everyone with his beautiful ethereal fashion photography, eminent British photographer Tim Walker, has tried his hand in film-making too. With his creations being a long-standing inspiration for Mulberry, it is little wonder that Tim’s foray into filmmaking was well supported by the fashion house. Thus created, was a self-funded project, ‘The Lost Explorer’, a short film based on a Patrick McGrath book about a young girl named Evelyn, who finds a lost and injured explorer at the bottom of her garden. The beautiful whimsical short story which was the basis for Tim’s film debut had its first screening exclusively for a select fashion audience at BAFTA in the Princess Anne Theatre in London, to coincide with London Fashion Week celebrations. The screening was followed with a speech by Kit Hesketh Harvey, who adapted the book for the film. After the screening, the audience was transported by Mercedes Benz to Claridges hotel, where the Explorerthemed adventures began. The hotel’s Ballroom was magically turned into the theme of the Lost Explorer, replete with tents, mosquito nets and jungle noises creating the ‘Lost’ ambience. Guests included Alexa Chung, Gemma Arterton, Amber Le Bon, Laura Bailey, Olympia Campell, Felicity Jones, Helena Bonham Carter and Alex Shulman. Exotic soups, seafood and potjiekos did the rounds while diners sat on directors chairs around camping style tables.

‘both are about escapism and fantasy’, and The Lost Explorer with its dream sequences and imagined reality is the ideal tale for this photographer to tell. The final result is a spectacular insight into a young girl’s mind and the beauty of imagination as childhood is left behind. The Lost Explorer was also selected for the Locarno Festival’s short film nominee for the European Film Awards 2010.

Through the film, Tim’s distinctive and breathtaking photography skills in capturing a child’s fantasy and a mysterious reality are evident. Tim is aware of the parallels between fashion photography and filming,

s s e c n i r P taor t S She’s gone from being the world’s klutziest princess to one of the most stunning young women the big screen has ever seen; she’s down to earth, charming and very, very talented... Introducing Anne Hathaway!

A

nne Hathaway is one of the few actresses around that has you wrapped around her finger when you watch her on TV. Her laugh is infectious, her big doe eyes incredibly vulnerable and women all over the world wonder how she gets her dark brown hair to shine just so...though most ‘regular’ women relate to her, the actress does not like to be called regular – she says, “It does kind of bother me when people come up and say, “It’s so refreshing to see someone regular in Hollywood”. I’m like, “What does that mean?” I don‘t want to be the regular girl because that’s a code word for fat by the Hollywood system”. But perhaps what she doesn’t understand is that when people say ‘regular’ they don’t mean regular and they definitely don’t mean fat (oh dear lord no!). It’s just the world’s way of saying that she gets it! Gets what people want to see on screen and off screen... So has she always been this charming? Most friends of ‘Annie’ (that’s what her friends call her) would agree. Anne was born Anne Jacqueline Hathaway on November 12, 1982 to parents Gerald Hathaway, a lawyer and Kate McCauley. Kate,

I always spent so much time... imagining I was different people, playing dress up. 28

I was always intimidated by fashion and felt like it wasn’t something I was cool enough to handle. Anne’s mother, was also an actress. That small fact, coupled with young Anne’s over active imagination made her decide early on that acting was what she wanted to pursue as a career. She explains today, “...I always spent so much time... imagining I was different people, coming up with the circumstances of their lives, playing dress up. You couldn’t convince me that I wasn’t these people. Then getting to see my mom act I realized that there was a profession and that people got to do it all the time, and that people got to do it to entertain other people. So it was always a huge desire of mine and I was just very lucky that I was able to do it...” Her success however, can’t all be attributed to luck. Anne started acting early on... participating in high school productions regularly. Her performance as Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress won her a Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award nomination for Best Performance by a High School Actress. The soon to be famous young girl was also a very diligent student and often drove herself very hard when it came to

academics. She explains today, “My parents used to get very nervous when I was in high school because I would get a test back with a 98 percent and all I could see was the two percent that I missed.” Today, she freely admits that she also suffered from depression as a young girl, but later got over it and that the depressed girl within her has “... said her piece and she is gone... I so remember her but she is no longer part of me. I just got through it”. After high school, Anne enrolled in Vassar College to pursue an education in English and Women’s Studies. Later she transferred to New York University, and by her own admission loved it, “College is such a unique time, because you’re learning 30

October 2010

a little bit how to be an adult. You’re learning how to take care of yourself without parental influence, and you’re exposed to so many great minds. I feel like I didn’t even know how to think until I got to college”. Her career however, unlike her education, didn’t really take off until 2001. It was during that year that The Princess Diaries was released. The movie was an instant success and Anne instantly rocketed to the top of every mother’s ‘Role Model for my Daughter’ list. For the next three years Anne continued to star in family movies including Nicholas Nickleby, Ella Enchanted and of course, the Princess Diaries II: The Royal Engagement. While she didn’t resent being a role model for young

girls, Anne also knew that she wasn’t really that person in real life, “I was 17 years old when I was cast in The Princess Diaries. That film landed, and it landed big. And so I became identified with a role that wasn’t really me. I’ve never had any problem with going to the lengths of what a film demands. You can tell that by my eyebrows in The Princess Diaries.” Anne shed her ‘lovely young girl persona’ by then appearing in more serious movies. She starred in R-Rated Havoc and also starred alongside Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in commercial and critical hit Brokeback Mountain. In 2006, Anne reprised the lead role in another hit movie, The Devil Wears Prada. The movie, according to

Anne, helped her shed some of her fashion consciousness, “I was always intimidated by fashion and felt like it wasn’t something I was cool enough to handle. After the movie I realised they are just clothes and I shouldn’t be thinking about it so much.” Worried or not, audiences worldwide unanimously agree that Anne is one of the best looking young gals around. Though the actress does battle body issues occasionally – “I am not afraid to show myself to people. A woman is lying if she says she doesn’t have a few issues, but I try to shrug them off...” – all in all, she tries hard to maintain a healthy, fun lifestyle whilst being realistic about the demands Hollywood makes on her body. She says, “...when I’m working, I’m incredibly disciplined, because when you’re portraying someone else, your body isn’t your own. But when I’m not working, I think less about what I eat. For example, last night, I had a club sandwich, and two nights ago, I had pizza. You’ve got to live!” The actress also insists that there is a huge difference between looking good and feeling good, “I look my best after an entire hair and makeup team has spent hours perfecting me. When do I feel my best? When I haven’t looked in a mirror for days, and I’m doing things that make me happy.” Most of us regular folks would agree however, it’s not her fame we love, or her looks; it’s the look-at-meI’m-famous-yet-nice-and-not-goingcrazy-for-all-the-wrong-reasons vibe that she exudes that makes us all go ‘awwwwwww’ every time her grin graces the screen. Does it help that she looks A.M.A.Z.I.N.G while conquering cinema screens? Well, we won’t deny it – yes it does! Here’s to many more years of unmatched success and happiness Anne!

Supermodel

Model Material This young woman puts the ‘super’ back in supermodel. Tall, gorgeous with that slight tinge of bohemia that awes those around her... meet Canadian-Ukrainian model Daria Werbowy!

D

aria Werbowy is not a household name. Ask 10 people on the street, and perhaps one will scrunch up their face... and say “I’ve heard that name... Did she go to high school with me?” (She didn’t. If she had, you certainly would have remembered). But names aside, she’s definitely a household face. Tall, discreet and more than a little intimidating, this green eyed beauty with cheek bones so well defined you could sharpen knives on them has been around for a long long time. She’s been making millions for a long time too... but that’s another matter. Daria was born in 1983, and it seemed like she was fated to be a model, “Modelling was kind of like a shadow that followed me everywhere since I was eight. I’d have people stop me in the street or the supermarket and say, “You should try it.” At the age of fourteen it seemed like the inevitable could no longer be put off. She was after all, the only 5”11 fourteen year old in her class. She signed up with her local modelling agency Susan J Model and Talent Management, modelling part time during her high school years. She soon switched to Elite Agency however and after graduating high school decided to pursue modelling as a full time career. Her parents did not put up any obstacles in the face of her dreams. Today, Werbowy regularly raves about her Dad, “I’ve never had to rebel against my parents; I never had that sort of teen-angst thing where you didn’t get along with them. My dad’s always been my buddy. We hang out. He encouraged me to get out there, but then he has always believed in exploring.” Family support or no family support, Daria’s beginnings as a model were shaky, to say the least. show were for New York Fashion Week in September 2001. In light of the September 11 tragedy, all shows were cancelled. Werbowy instead lived in London, Paris and Greece for a while. She insists that it was during this time that she made the greatest memories of her lifetime, despite having no real work to occupy herself with, “...Looking back, it was one of the greatest times of my life. There was no responsibility, I was doing road trips with my boyfriend of the time, I met a lot of great people, but at the time it was depressing.” Werbowy returned home determined to give up modelling and instead focus on going to art school. The plan was to raise money for art school by picking up some modelling jobs. The universe had other plans for her however. She went down to New York and met her agent and her whole world changed, “I returned to New York, met my agent and the next day I had an exclusive deal with Prada. From then on it was all a bit of a blur.” Today Daria holds the record for opening and closing the most shows in one season. She has also managed to accumulate an impressive reservoir of clients under her belt, including but not limited to Prada, Lancôme, Yves

shows-a-day thing, when you just get exhausted”.

Saint Laurent, Pepe Jeans, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Hermès, Valentino, David Yurman, Missoni, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. Fall/Winter 2003, her first season, saw Werbowy appearing on the cover of Vogue Italia thrice, Vogue Paris pronounced her one of the top 30 models of the 2000’s, and in July 2007, Werbowy was listed as Forbes ninth highest earning model. She also has her own star on the Canadian Walk of Fame. Daria is also spokesperson for beauty brand Lancome, and earns an estimated $1 million a year from the job, “The great thing about my Lancôme deal is I get to be not just a model, I get a voice... Sometimes I wish I didn’t have one because I get really insecure about what I say. But at the end of the day, it is what it is, and I always try to speak the truth.” However, perhaps the best thing about the Lancome ‘pension’ is the fact that the model doesn’t have to work so much anymore, “I really enjoyed them [the modelling jobs] in the beginning. It was really empowering to stride out there, but eventually you start walking and on the way you’re, like, “What am I going to eat tonight?” But I’m lucky now; I can come in and do a couple instead of the whole three-countries-and-six-

Unlike many other models, Daria is also sensible enough to know that there is a world outside the modelling bubble. She’s beautiful enough to not need to be vain, and has a horror of mirrors, “There are mirrors at shoots, mirrors backstage at the shows, and a mirror just before you walk on the runway. It’s too much. The first time I ever cried on-set was when I was surrounded by mirrors for six hours. It was torture. I don’t think anyone could endure that.” She’s also not sure that modelling sends the right message to women in the world, “I’ve had a lot of mixed feelings about what I do ... A lot of the time, I feel like I’m part of the problem when it comes to all the superficiality and vanity that impacts the way girls grow up”. So what’s next for Werbowy? Well, the summer of 2009 saw her go MIA for a while on a sailing trip with some friends and family, “For the first time since all this started I really felt I was on vacation, completely separate from the Western way of life and at one with nature. We left from New York and it was 24 days until we hit land. We saw whales, dolphins, had crazy storms with 15ft waves, things breaking and snapping off...it was so great”. Her ability to take time off for herself is what makes her most unique. Today the model is quietly prepossessed and considering taking on other challenges, “I’m asking more questions about life in general. It’s like, “Oh my God, there’s a whole world of things to learn about.” So I’m just taking it easy...” To tell you the truth, we’re more than a little over awed by her... here’s a beauty that has more than just looks to offer the world. Will we hear from her again? Well, perhaps not (she hates interviews), but you can bet we’ll see her around for years to come! October 2010

Room by Emma Donoghue

Letters to Juliet starring Amanda Seyfried, Chris Egan

Kaleidescope Heart by Sara Bareilles

Fashion Dig http:// www.fashiondig. com

Heart breaking and hopeful, Room is a ground breaking book. It follows the story of a five year old boy who has known nothing in his life except a room and his Ma. Ignorant that a world lies outside this one room, the young boy’s mother keeps him busy all day long with fun tasks, until one day the proverbial rug is swept out from under his feet and he is introduced to the outside world. Room is an emotionally captivating book and its pages overflow with primal familial love. An intense read that will stay with you for a long, long time.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks Nicholas Sparks’ books are only predictable by virtue of their unpredictability. This latest novel is no different. The book’s main character, Katie, finds herself hiding out in North Carolina where she is drawn to widower Alex and his two children. As she tentatively allows herself to love again, her past catches up with her. This is a dark book, peppered with hope and added to the mix are, as usual, bucketfuls of love... Sparks has definitely penned yet another motion picture in the making.

October 2010

Young Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) finds herself in Verona, where thousands of broken hearted girls pour out their misery over their love life to Shakespeare’s Juliet in anguished letters. Sophie finds one such letter and decides to write back. The journey that follows tells the story of love lost and found, love new and old. Grab your best gal pals and get ready for a night of mooning over love... and Chris Egan!

Death at a Funeral starring Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Luke Wilson, Zoe Saldana & James Marsden This all star cast attempts (and for the most part succeeds) in remaking the 2007 film, Death at a Funeral. Two brothers have organised their father’s funeral, and it seems that everything that can go wrong, does. The movie boasts a very strange, slap stick style of comedy; coffins are regularly being manhandled, uncontrollably angry uncles do their best to wreak havoc during the funeral ceremony, etc. If you’re not a fan of slap stick, give this one a miss. Otherwise... well, it’s your funeral!

Sara Bareilles’s recently released album is a fun, gentle listen. Tracks such as King of Anything and Hold My Heart are poppy, melodic, alternatively sad and upbeat. The album lulls listeners into a sense of comfort. It’s definitely not an album that will attain a cult following in the coming years, but it’s still a very enjoyable listen.

Strike! Back! by The Baseballs A German rock and roll band that only does rockabilly covers of songs such as Rihanna’s Umbrella and Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars? It sounds stupid, but boy are these guys talented! Their covers lend an old school feel to modern songs and have listeners tapping away their feet to impossibly jazzy redone versions of songs. You have to check these guys out! They are so good, it’s unbelievable (and yes, reviewing is really that easy sometimes!).

October 2010

Pop has never been done like this before! They’re still young and they’re definitely still smokin’... Introducing... Nick, Kevin and Joe, the Jonas Brothers!

W

e at Glam grew up with Westlife, Boyz II Men, Nsync and of course The Backstreet Boys. The boys back then crooned love songs to adoring girls all over the world. They were fawned over and *ahem* swooned over. Fast forward a decade or so later, and not much has changed. Girls are still swooning over boys on TV. Thing is, the boys are different now. For one thing, this month’s ‘Feast for the Eyes’ comes not in ones but in threes! The cherry on top? They’re related! And no, they’re not triplets! Yep, we’re talking about Joe, Nick and Kevin, the Jonas Brothers. Kevin is the oldest and was born November 5th, 1987. Joe and Nick followed respectively on August 15, 1989 and September 16, 1992. The boys come from an Evangelical Christian household and were home schooled by their mother Denise. Their father, Paul Kevin Jonas is a former pastor and a songwriter and musician. Today, the three boys are known for their wholesome family image. It seems like the brothers have been all over the music scene for, like *insert giggle here*, forever, but in actual reality, the group was signed a mere five years ago by Columbia records. In 2005, the new President of the record label heard a song performed by Nick Jonas and his brothers and decided to sign the three. Their first album It’s About Time was released in 2006. The three brothers decided to switch labels soon after. They were dropped by Columbia Records in 2007 and signed on with Hollywood Records in the same year. That year, the pop/soft rock group exploded on the music scene. Their second album Jonas Brothers reached number five on the Billboard Hot 200 chart in its first week. The rest is history.

To date, the boy band has performed at the White House no less than twice (you know you’ve arrived when the President requests for you!) and has starred alongside Disney princess and popstar in her own right Miley Cyrus on the Hannah Montana Show. The

brothers have also acted in the Disney movie, Camp Rock. In 2008, they released their third album, A Little Bit Longer followed by Lines, Vines and Trying Times in 2009. For such young musicians, their

achievements till now are certainly extraordinary. Add to that thousands of screaming fan girls, and they’ve got it made. Can the fan girls be intimidating? Well, perhaps Joe explains that one best, “You can never really get used to the fans.

October 2010

47

You hear the screams and your first thought is “Cloverfield” because of the screams. So you start looking around for a monster.” The brothers also understand that their love sick female fan base is often a sore point with other young men (jealous much guys?). They have plenty of stories, “A girl followed us to the bathroom, and a guy who was there looks at Nick and me and says, “I hate you, you suck!” We were like, “Sorry, dude.” They don’t really have anything to be

48

October 2010

sorry about though. The Jonas boys worked very hard for what they’ve got today and they’ve got no qualms making that known. Oldest brother Kevin says, “People say it was overnight success, but we’ve been trying to make this happen for a long time. We passed that three-year mark when most bands either have their shot or disappear – and we finally have our shot.” So what exactly are they doing with their shot? Well, for starters ten percent of their salaries (and

that’s quite a lot folks!) goes towards churches and Nick Jonas’s charity, Change for the Children Foundation. The band states that, “We started The Change for the Children Foundation to support programs that motivate and inspire children to face adversity with confidence, determination and a will to succeed. And we think the best people to help children are their peers – kids helping other kids who are a little less fortunate.” Nick, the youngest Jonas also suffers from Type 1 diabetes and has partnered

with Bayer Diabetes Care as a diabetes ambassador to help raise awareness about diabetes amongst young people. So how does it play out exactly... with three brothers in the band? Is there a lot of fighting and griping? Tense family situations? The questions are valid – surely mixing work and family would not be such a great idea... and yet... the brothers seem to handle it so effortlessly... As Joe says, “It’s really cool being on tour with your brothers because

you kind of have a different respect for each other. You get on stage every night and you play a concert, and you can’t really start arguing and throwing guitars at each other.” He also explains, “It’s really cool being in a band with my brothers because when you look onstage you see Nick and not some random kid. If something happens, if something goes wrong, we know what happens, you know. It’s not like we have this huge thing afterwards like “What happened? I didn’t know where you guys were!” That kind of

thing. You always know what’s going on...we love each other to death.” Each brother has a different personality (duh!). Nick is shy, although he doesn’t like being called so. “I’m not shy, but I am the quiet one in the band. I don’t like to meet a lot of people. My mom was always like, “Nick, go meet that person”. And I’m like “Uh I don’t want to.” I’m in my own world sometimes, but I’m getting better!” Kevin is the fast driver with the really great sense of style and Joe is the funny one.

So basically, they’re famous, funny, smart and good people. Could anyone ask for more? The three brothers certainly couldn’t. They realise they’re blessed and make sure to remind themselves of it every day, every show. Kevin explains how happy they are that they get to do what they love, “Before we go onstage, we say, “Living the dream, baby, living the dream,” with our entire band and crew. It really is, every minute we wake up”.

They sound too good to be true don’t they? They’re thankful, happy and well adjusted... By now most girls (and the entire staff of GLAM) are just about ready to love them ‘4eva’ (as young people say these days). But are the boys ready to date a fan? As usual, Joe has the answer, “We’d absolutely date a fan, I mean, how else are we going to meet girls?” Line up girls! The brothers are in town and it doesn’t seem like they’re going away any time soon!

reasons 14 Argentina globe trot

to head to

1

Tango

It’s a cliché to start off with this, but it would be dishonest not to. Tango on the streets, tango in old theatres, tango with fine dining, tango classes... it’s hard not to get itchy feet, but inhibitions rule and one is saved the embarrassment of attempting those deceivingly easy seeming moves. Ask the average Argentine if he or she tangos, and the answer is likely to be ‘no’. The older generation did and still do tango, but the younger lot bred on discotheque culture look at it as an art that only some learn to perform. It’s not the dance of the masses, it seems. While tango performers can be seen in many squares and streets like La Boca, it would be a good idea to go for a proper tango show. We went to the Carlos Gardel Tango show, where the split-level stage houses a live band above and the tango dancers below.

For all things beautiful

The scene, the people... After the first few days there you begin to wonder if the whole country is on something illegal – how can just about every person you meet be upbeat, funny (if a bit selfdeprecatory), good-looking and well-groomed? Then just to ensure that you didn’t doubt their reality, you run into creepy cabbies. (Which begs the question, are there cabbies anywhere in the world who are not a. annoying; b. creepy; c. rude?) We are told that some perfect-looking creatures may have had a little help from Dr Scalpel and Nurse Botox. But my pedestrian observation is that much of the attitude, the poise and flair for good clothing are all thanks to the rich gene pool created over centuries of foreign influences. It’s not just the people. It’s the place itself. See point 13.

3

For sheer style

The first thing that will hit you, as it did the bedraggled bunch of us on arrival at Buenos Aires is the display of skinny jeans tucked into glamorous boots. A knee-length leather extravaganza smartens up any outfit, it seems. All we wanted to do was escape into the confines of a hotel room, and emerge in something a little more elegant than flip-flops, tracks and tees.

50

October 2010

4 6

Leather The leather industry is huge in Argentina. So trendy bags and awesome boots are on display everywhere. It’s not a bargain buy, but the quality definitely demands that price tag.

Women power and the Madres de Plaza de Mayo

The May Square, the main square downtown, is where much of that ‘trouble’ or political movement finds a voice. Since the revolution in May 1810, Plaza de Mayo continues to be the main site for political demonstrations and gatherings. To date, weekly, mothers and grandmothers of those who disappeared during the military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983 (the Dirty War) march in the square. While hopes of reuniting with their abducted children have all but vanished, they continue to march seeking recognition of the losses and demanding an apology. Many children born in prison were given away in adoption. Now, a campaign calls for those who doubt their parentage to submit to DNA testing, to be reunited with their biological families. The Madres movement stands for more that what it started out to be. It is one of the strongest human rights movements in the world.

History on show

For those of us coming from the land of sparkling new, largest, tallest and shiniest, Buenos Aires is refreshingly well-aged – that’s the difference; but it is extravagant and ostentatious too, and that’s the similarity. Even regular buildings boast of exaggerated domes and intricate pillars. And nowhere else is the need for that show more visible than in the La Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Peron finally found a resting place. A guided tour of the cemetery is akin to a brief course on the sometimes bloody and often disruptive history of the nation. The details of that history are to be found in how the northern and southern parts of the town are laid out (one catering to more recent immigrants and the other to the elite), in the Spanish architecture rubbing shoulders with French and English influences, and from sculpted memorials at crossroads. Spanish invasion, the hope of mountains of silver (giving the country its name), military coups, exiles, civil unrests, an attempt to first disassociate from the Spanish past and then to embrace it, the cult of Juan Peron and now an active democracy... some say Argentina has achieved a lot despite its troubles, while the naysayers say that despite its achievements it flirts with trouble all the time.

Because, getting there just got easier... Getting there is no doubt an expensive, tiring and timeconsuming exercise. Unless you are a journalist on an allexpenses paid business class passage in a five-star airline (more of that later). But with Qatar Airways flying direct from Doha daily, long transits and tedious routes can be avoided.

Hangouts galore

The one place where you can savour most of all that’s good about the country is at La Boca, where an afternoon must be dedicated to the colourful, festive cobble-stoned streets that fan out in a triangular formation. Touristy souvenirs, bargains, tango on the pavements, thirst quenchers, crispy empanadas, street performers and artists all conspire in setting apart La Boca from what lies in the neighbourhood surrounding it. When a crabby cabbie off-loaded the bunch of us in an alley abutting La Boca (because we enquired about receipt for the fare), we saw firsthand what we’d rather have not. Eerily deserted streets, decrepit buildings, and a ‘get-out-of-here-quick’ vibe in the air. San Telmo, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, is a must visit as well. There, in quaint courtyards and boutiques can be found antique furniture and curios. In the squares, pretty and inexpensive jewellery handcrafted by the indigenous people can be had at a bargain. While we are on shopping, get your hands on some leather. Factory outlets are cheaper, but you need an insider to get you to a good one.

Dolce de leche and all things tasty

In a perfect world, all that we consume out there would be fat-free and healthy. Put your diet on the back burner and get ready to dig into the South American treats. Steaks, empanadas and of course, the incomparable dolce de leche. And then there are some that we can’t quite write about here.

11 10 Part-time job, perhaps? Earning pocket money? Extra income? Maybe a career choice? Dog walking seems to be a popular vocation. Everywhere – no exaggeration – you turn, you will find backpack toting dog-walkers with fists tightly around at least half a dozen leashes. Buenos Aires breathes through its sprawling green expanses of parks, meant for both man and his best friend. It takes a little getting used to, all those well-disciplined fellas walking around, and not showing any inclination to nip at their walk buddies.

Because it’s not really that unsafe!

We were given a flyer by the hotel that listed ‘suggestions’ when walking around Buenos Aires. Not something you should give faint-hearted guests visiting the country for the first time. “If you are attacked, do not resist”, “Be attentive when using public transport” and “do not accept help from strangers for supposed ‘stains’ on clothing, etc.” the flyer warned. A good set of rules to follow wherever you may travel. But I guess what distinguishes the Argentine thief is his brand consciousness: “Thieves can come by on motorcycles to grab watches (mostly Rolex) and purses.” Finally a reason to feel good that I don’t own one.

Nature at its best

Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world, and much of its geography is a tourist’s dream. Be it Patagonia in the south or Iguazu in the north. We went north. The Iguazu National Park and Waterfalls is one of the contenders for the new seven natural wonders contest. Straddling three countries – Brazil, Argentina, Paruguay – the national park covering an area of 67,620 hectares, boasts of over 2000 varieties of native flora species, 450 bird species, 80 species of mammals and 275 waterfalls. The waterfalls however only cover Brazil and Argentina. Standing at the majestic and aptly named Devil’s Throat – the highest and biggest of the group of waterfalls – one can have a view of Brazil through the mist of water. Iguazu is the right fix for those seeking adventure. In the national park, canopying and rappelling can be tried. And at the falls, long hiking trails, rafting and a rather scary speedboat ride into the curtain of water are not to be missed.

HEAVEN SENT

YOUR MONTHLY HOROSCOPE… Aries

Libra

With the weather getting better, it’s perfect for weekend getaways with family. This is however, not a good time to go overboard on spending unless it comes to necessities. The business plans you are working on show signs of becoming a reality. So let your dreams grow wings, finally!

Friends are there for you and will have your best interests at heart. You will realise that people understand you better. This is the month in which gifts and income boosts are more likely to come your way, so make the most of it!

Taurus Moving into a new home could invite problems. Do keep your cool and things will fall into place, eventually! There may be some tension at the workplace. Rein in your rage; and this shall pass!

Gemini

Kate Winslet Born on October 5

Friendships come with slight skirmishes and misunderstandings. But if you are honest, you can tide over the problem easily. Do not let stress get the better of you, whether at home or at the workplace. Things do not look so good on the financial front, so keep a check on impulsive spending. Wait until things turn out okay!

Cancer Existing relationships sizzle! This is also an excellent month for entertainment, hobbies and adventure. Indulge in something you’ve always dreamt about; whether it’s going para-sailing or bungee jumping! Career matters, though, require a lot of attention!

Leo Home is where the heart is… but your home life may take a tumultuous turn this month. Arguments with or on behalf of family members could be a part of the picture. But take heart, resolutions are bound to be quick and relatively easy. An unexpected financial windfall is an important highlight this month.

Virgo Dealing with private matters and personal finances are full on. You could find that your phone is ringing off the hook, personal emails and invitations are abundant, and more than the usual errands need to be run. Communication problems ease and financial matters improve significantly at the same time. You’ll have to deal with overspending on personal pleasures though.

October 2010

Scorpio Life this October is a continuous ‘on the move’ exercise for you. Work finds you, which means new job offers or increased demands from co-workers. But take a break from routine! You are making a strong impression and this means many of those long-standing plans will finally bear fruit.

Sagittarius Your social calendar is busy this month! There are parties and gatherings to attend and an impression to make! It’s a time when job offers come to you and friends find you. Your personal charisma is on a high but be prepared to make some personal sacrifices on the home front.

Capricorn You are feeling all adventurous and willing to take many matters in your own hands. But this impulsiveness can rub people the wrong way! So be cautious in the way you deal with others. Social interactions are especially spirited this month and this month is excellent for career, business income and romance.

Aquarius Communication plays a key role in your job, so communicate well to keep projects fresh and interesting. For those feeling adventurous, a small break in routine is essential in the middle of the month. A minor misunderstanding with a loved one may cause some heartache. But you will tide over this too!

Pisces Look forward to a positive experience at the workplace that might change your perception of certain people. But the month ahead could be upsetting if you let everything that goes on around you to get onto your nerves. Try to relax and let people be themselves for a change! Money may come from least expected sources. Enjoy!
