G Talk With the buzz that’s Lagoona Mall Fashion Week, which took place a couple of weeks ago in celebration of all the new brands that have popped up for the first time in Qatar, it is the official opening of Tory Burch’s boutique that we are most looking forward to. To officiate the store in style, the original streetstyle star Anna Dello Russo will be gracing our shores this month to up the cool factor. The brand’s collaboration with is to draw star appeal to a charitable cause close to our hearts, the Educate A Child foundation that is spearheaded by Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser. While the celebrated creative consultant will share styling tips and stories with guests, 10% of all sales from the opening event will be donated to the foundation. The significance of such a big fashion name coming to Doha to support a noble cause is one that warms our hearts and reminds us that the industry, though frivolous at times, has increasingly reached out to champion important issues. Michael Kors has had a two-year partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme, delivering 10 million meals to children in hunger-stricken areas around the world. Through social media campaigns and partial sales proceeds of special collections, the designer’s effort has been recognised as one of the most important contributors to stopping world famine. Earlier this summer, we highlighted the work of fashion model Liya Kebede who founded LemLem, an initiative to preserve and sell the art of Ethiopian weaving to a global audience. In this issue, we put the spotlight on Chicago-based designer Katrin Schnabl who collaborated with Riyadh’s Art of Heritage foundation on a capsule collection that highlights the artistic heirlooms of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while giving underprivileged women opportunities to better their lives. In this season of giving, we are thrilled to be able to bring you these stories to inspire and to reflect on. December is a merry-making season that may bring much joy but may also isolate those who are less fortunate. While we make plans to surprise loved ones with material gifts, let’s give some thought to those who are in need by giving back what we can. With the many special collections by fashion houses to benefit social causes, it’s the perfect time of the year to put the heart into the chic.

Dressing for Qatar’s autumn and winter days takes a little bit of planning. The joys of crisp mornings and cool nights are interrupted by warm afternoons, especially during the midday blazing sun. While we all know that layering is the ultimate solution to beat the changing weather, the idea of lugging around jackets and changing sweaters throughout the day can be a daunting task! Start with a comfortable base layer- basic dress or long-sleeved top and work your way through the layers. A scarf is always handy at anytime of the day, a sleeveless pullover or a kimono wrap gives modest coverage at midday, and a proper coat keeps the chill at bay in the evening. A waist-belt is handy to give shape to your silhouette, especially when the layering gets too bulky.

DECEMBER 2015 AN EDIT OF THINGS THAT ARE HOT NOW
ARABIAN CULTURE GOES GLOBAL
EVIAN X ALEXANDER WANG It’s becoming a regular thing as we await the Evian collaborations each year so we can add another pretty bottle to our collector’s item kit. The 2016 limited edition bottle is designed by Alexander Wang featuring the designer’s signature bar code logo on two contrasting bottles, one black and one white. The purity of Evian water is emphasised through clean graphics and highlighted by the play of the lines on the bottles. Alexander applies the barcode logo in different ways and throughout different collections and seasons. Inspired by the unique purity of Evian water, Wang put it into new context on its iconic glass bottle. The design is clean, simple, and at the same time interacts with the dynamic reflections of water as a natural element. “In my approach to design, I have always had an un-precious outlook, focusing on the pieces that people wear every day, then tweaking them and elevating them to give a distinct point of view,” said Wang. “Evian water is something that is truly ‘every day’ yet precious by design. We used linear and strong graphics to give the brand’s iconic bottle our sensibility, and to create a new take on it." The Evian x Alexander Wang bottle will be available in 2 sizes and is now available in the Middle East in selected hotels, cafés, restaurants and retailers.
Dubai-based fashion designer Katya Kovtunovich presented her collection inspired by the heritage of The Emirates at the 2015 Milan Expo, as part of a dedicated preview for Dubai Expo 2020. As the first designer to introduce a modern take on the traditional Arabic fabric, Katya’s collection is inspired by the authentic beauty of Sadou, a material widely used in The Emirates for upholstery. Created with the aim of taking the Bedouin heritage into the modern world, Katya comments on her collection, “I try to break boundaries of the conventional use of Sadou, rethinking its traditional role and giving it the central stage and limelight as a fully functional high fashion fabric. I love seeing new potential in people, places and fabrics.” The unique collection from the Russian-born designer, using traditional Arabic fabric while working in Dubai and creating modern clothes that appeal to women worldwide – is in itself a representation of what Dubai is all about : a global mix of cultures, visions and experiences that connects minds and creates a future. “It’s natural for me to see the beauty in the unseen - the Bedouin is juxtaposed with the aristocratic, the desert with the city life: rough with refined, heritage with modern. Cultures, places and opposite ethnic references are all mixed up, creating a new synergy and new reality,” Katya adds.

COSMIC CONFESSION The latest to drop from the Adidas and Rita Ora collaboration is Cosmic Confession, a capsule created specifically for winter. Blue and yellow uniform tones feature pops of white in the brand’s signature Three Stripes and Trefoils, as cuts are long and lean. Boyfriend- fit tees with bold branding, silky track pants, all-in-ones, cut-away gloves and service caps feature utility details such as multi-zips and custom patches. Iconic Arab singer Umm Kulthum has been recognised as a vintage fashion icon and one of history’s savviest travellers in a new photo book launched by Heathrow Airport and supermodel Yasmin Le Bon. The exclusive coffee table book, A Journey in Style, celebrates some of the most stylish travellers, outfits and luggage to grace Heathrow’s concourses since London’s global hub airport opened in the 1940s. The collection of archive photography highlights the enduring relationship between fashion and flying, capturing stunning images of the jet-set from yesteryear through to today’s style elite. A Journey in Style shows the beloved late Egyptian singer in a photograph capturing her arrival at Heathrow in 1967, where she met with famous French actor Jean-Claude Pascal. Sporting her signature black sunglasses and beehive up-do, ‘The Star of the East’ exudes classic glamour in a bejewelled abaya with lace trim and a long fur coat draped over her shoulders. “There’s something fabulously glamorous about flying that has always fascinated me and to this day I still get excited about travelling. From the starlets of the 50s stepping onto the runway in their oversized sunglasses and trollies stacked with monogrammed luggage, to today’s style icons, air travel has always been packed with stylish possibility,” Yasmin says. A Journey in Style is available on amazon.co.uk and at Heathrow airport for QR85.
LOUIS VUITTON’S GREAT JOURNEY Louis Vuitton will celebrate ‘Volez, Voguez, Voyagez – Louis Vuitton’ at the Grand Palais from 4th December 2015 till 21st February 2016. Curated by Olivier Saillard, this exhibition retraces Louis Vuitton’s great journey from 1854 till today, through depictions of the maison’s founding members and those who create the Louis Vuitton of tomorrow. The Grand Palais was constructed in 1900 during one of the most spectacular Universal Exhibitions in Paris which welcomed 48 milllion visitors. At this turning point of the century, George Vuitton was in charge of organising the entire section dedicated to ‘Travel & Leather Goods’. The Louis Vuitton booth, surprisingly in the shape of a merry-go-round, presented the Maison’s most innovative luggage and elegant bags, and was the centre of attention. “Louis Vuitton has always been at the avant-garde of creation. More than a century after, if Louis Vuitton remains at the helm of fashion, it’s because we continously inspire ourselves from the past while anticipating trends of our times. For this exhibition, Olivier Saillard has immersed himself in the archives of our maison to decode its secrets. He delivers a fresh vision of our past, present and future”, says Michael Burke, CEO of Louis Vuitton.
Taking a cue from the auspicious Oriental number, we celebrate our birthday with eight stylish indulgences to make a merry festive season.

FAMILY IN FASHION BY HANEEN HINDI
Safa Balqees, the up-and-coming, homegrown jalabiya brand, is proof that tradition does not have to be sacrificed for modernity.
FASHION / 57
Safa Balqees is all about being fashion forward while staying true to your roots, which makes sense considering the brand is led entirely by the Qatar-based, Canadian-Arab Steitieh family. Each member plays an important role: Nada Al Haj Housin (mother) designs, Diala (daughter) photographs and assists in designing, Majd (another daughter) models and runs the business, and Adnan (father) funds and takes care of legal specifics. Just six months after its official launch in May, the local label put out two collections – 'Safa' most recently, and 'Balqees' during Ramadan – and has been picked up by Salam Stores at the Gate Mall, where their lines are being sold exclusively. Staying true to its theme of family and home, the Safa Balqees look is stylish and comfortable.
The family chose to name the brand, as well as the first two collections, after their maternal grandmother, who Majd describes as “a fashion icon well ahead of her time.” She adds, “My grandma was known for saying ‘batalna ha hal moda,’ or ‘that trend’s dead.’ All designs have to pass that test.” The design process is collaborative between mother and daughters, to ensure that each piece walks the delicate line between conventional and contemporary. This marriage of old and new is where they got their motto: “Modern wear with traditional flair.” Although the older generation was the inspiration, these are certainly not your grandmother’s jalabiyas. Arabic calligraphy juxtaposes Gothic lace in some designs, and, in others, Palestinian embroidery meets an all-new silhouette. It’s clothing for the trendy, yet timeless. Grandmother Safa Balqees would be proud.

Inspired by the simplicity and independence of different communities around the world, Central Saints Martins alumnus Andraya Farrag founded Bedouin, a label based on the traditional nomadic values that fly the flag of ‘Style Without Borders’.
FASHION / 63
E
ach collection espouses the merging of tradition and culture with contemporary design that is versatile, travel-friendly and timeless. A nod to the modernday jetsetter, minimalism takes over from traditional bohemia to appeal to the international audience. Andraya herself is an avid traveller, having worked with Marchesa in New York and Matthew Williamson in London, as well as a stint in a production house in India that embroiders items for Diane Von Furstenburg and Tory Burch. The rising star talks to us about her label and why it is time for fresh perspectives in the region. What is the story behind this collection? The 'On The Road' collection for AW15 was inspired by a road trip through the Nevada desert. I drew inspiration from the vast landscapes, stormy skies with a hint of the rodeo. The collection is predominantly made from luxurious silk that provides the wearer with maximum comfort and elegance. Inspired by the sky, the colour palette consists of rich berry, grey, ombre, midnight blue and black. Applique and cut-out embroidered stars are featured throughout on the jackets and silk tops. Alongside the versatile separates, are the more statement pieces such as Rodeo fringe trousers and the Horizon dress that give the collection a fun 1970’s twist. On The Road takes you on a journey from daybreak to midnight with a collection of easy-towear luxury staples that focus on attention to detail. Where did you study? What’s the design process like? Each collection is produced here in Dubai, by a talented team of machinists. I love working with a small team as they take a lot of pride in each item, resulting in a great atmosphere in the atelier. Each season I decide on a theme for the collection, which is always a destination from around the world. I then go to fabric fairs such as Première Vision where I meet with my suppliers. We work with an amazing silks mill in Italy that custom makes all of the silk especially for us. Once I have chosen the fabrics I begin designing! I usually come up with over 100 roughs for each collection, narrow it down and then develop each design on the stand. I do half of the pattern cutting, the other half is done by
BEDOUIN’s amazing pattern-cutter! We are very particular with the fit of the garment but when it is finally ready we make it into a beautifully crafted sample. How do you see the label as part of the scene in the Middle East? I believe that the fashion scene in the Middle East is on the cusp of welcoming diversity and contemporary design. It’s an exciting time for Bedouin as I feel that we are providing something for the understated woman that loves attention to detail and minimalist design. Our price points are affordable, yet we provide a high-end finish, appealing to a variety of women. The Middle East loves luxury so it is important to me to provide that, but also to be respected as an international brand that can be worn globally. I think in the past the Middle East focused on eveningwear and a bit of bling but that’s no longer the case. Bedouin complements this change by offering a lifestyle and pieces that can be worn from day to night. What influences your design work? I am heavily influenced by travel! However Bedouin is not a brand focusing only on the jetsetter, I hope to encourage spontaneity by providing versatile, go-to pieces without sacrificing detail. I design each piece with these items in mind, making sure that there is an item for every occasion. Each collection is designed by a new destination, with our upcoming collection embodying a modern twist on Mexican tradtion. I am also inspired by vintage fashion, film, and architecture. What do you think are elements of the Middle Eastern woman that excites you? The women of the Middle East are incredible. They aren’t afraid to make a statement and they are always so 'put together'. In the UK we tend to be a lot more casual when it comes to style but I really do love the effortless look. Some of my Middle Eastern muses are women that combine the contemporary style of London and New York with the groomed elegance of the Middle East. The women that I feel encapsulate this the most are Tala Samman and Zahra Pedram.

n one of the most misunderstood countries in the world where gender equality is often a talking point, an initiative for women empowerment stands out. Riyadh-based Art of Heritage (AOH) is a charitable organisation that carries the torch with a dual mission- to preserve Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage, while empowering women with disabilities and underprivileged women in the country. Over the last three decades, the organisation has assembled an extraordinary collection of historic textiles, costumes, and jewellery, representing the fabric design culture of the Arab region which becomes an important resource and reference tool to teach women the vanishing techniques in reproducing these culturally significant items. By allowing the women to discover, learn and recreate these historical gems, the organisation has created opportunities for the women to support themselves. Part of the historical collection was stored and conserved in Chicago for over a decade before returning to Saudi Arabia. In an effort to continue the crosscultural connection, fashion designer Katrin Schnabl and her business partner Birgit Rohm have launched the Art of Heritage Capsule Collection. Based in Chicago, Katrin is a trained dancer and skilled patternmaker who fuses her two passions to create clothes that reflect the dynamic lives of women. Combining luxurious fabrics, unique colour swatches and unexpected details through draping, her clothes have a distinct aesthetic that is both timeless and original. “We were immediately drawn to this project because we’ve built our label on empowering women and giving back through the work we do, which aligned perfectly with AOH’s mission,” says Birgit, who worked as a retail and brand manager for both Escada and Strenesse in Germany. “It was an incredible privilege for us to be exposed to Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage and have the opportunity to collaborate with Saudi women,” notes Katrin, who cut her teeth at Jil Sander and initially launched her
label in New York before moving to Chicago in 2004. Referencing the traditional costumes of the Najd region of Saudi Arabia, the capsule collection features dresses and tops with drapes and swooping sleeves. Each look is cut from a traditional bisht fabric, woven from fine camel hair, that is produced exclusively for AOH. “Although inspired by traditional costumes and textiles, it was important that we present modern pieces that could be mixed with existing items in a wardrobe,” the designer explains. Blouses carry inventive details, including rows of tiny buttons at the waist, allowing the wearer to adjust the size of the garment while a rare embroidery named naqda, becomes a focal decorative element. “It has a pixelated geometric quality to it that is very modern,” notes Katrin, who was able to incorporate this rare form of embroidery into her designs, thanks to AOH’s workshops. “We wanted to create a capsule collection that appeals to a contemporary audience and to make these traditional crafts relevant to a new generation,” explains Somaya Badr, AOH’s general manager. “What is exciting about our collaboration with Katrin and Birgit, is it is about women from different cultures coming together to create fashion that has a larger purpose beyond luxury.” The workshops have become a must-see on the itineraries of noted visitors to the country, and have received personalities including Queen Rania of Jordan, Prince Charles, and the Duchess of Cambridge. The capsule collection will be introduced to an international audience through trunk shows and partnerships with specialised stores around the world, in addition to an online channel. “In addition to supporting our charitable endeavours, there is a great opportunity to create a form of cultural diplomacy, that exposes an international audience to Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage,” notes Somaya, of a unique vision that is harnessing the power of fashion to change perceptions about the region.

LOOK AFTER YOUR HANDS
Don’t neglect the maintenance of your hands. Get into the habit of applying hand cream throughout the day and after washing your hands, and you’ll discover a soft transformation.

JOELLE’S BEAUTY SECRETS BY SHELLEY KNIPE
RENOWNED MAKE-UP AND BEAUTY EXPERT, SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR, REALITY TELEVISION STAR AND ALL-ROUND MIDDLE EASTERN CELEBRITY, JOELLE MARDINIAN, WAS RECENTLY IN DOHA TO PROMOTE THE LAUNCH OF HER LATEST JOELLE PARIS SKIN- AND HAIRCARE PRODUCTS. The experiences of clients at her Maison de Joelle salons were the motivation behind the products that are targeted to meet the exclusive needs of women in the Gulf. “In the region, women only spend 10% on skincare, which is terrible really. I have a harder job convincing people to buy skincare, than if I produced make-up,” says Joelle. “I am a make-up artist, I am creative, but that’s an aside, my passion is skin care.” The Joelle Paris Skincare Collection consists of 5 steps to help you build a better skin. Wash Away is a gentle facial wash that is easy on the skin, yet tough on make-up and debris. It thoroughly cleanses, without causing dehydration or dryness. The daily moisturiser Rescue Me activates rejuvenation by boosting collagen and elastin production. Good Day is a protective cream, which provides essential daytime moisture. Love Eyes can be used twice daily for brighter and more youthful-looking skin around the delicate eye area. The Good Night cream is infused with evening primrose oil to pamper your skin while you sleep. The entire range is suitable for all skin types. But Joelle’s aspiration to help every woman feel beautiful and comfortable with herself doesn’t just end at skin care. In her research she found that women complained of quickly losing the benefits of hair treatments due to sun exposure. With this in
mind, the Sun Protect range provides essential UV protection. “If I am going to the beach or if I am going on holiday, I will use Sun Protect. I travel with all my own products", says Joelle. The Sun Protect Shampoo helps rebuild weakened hair and strengthens roots, while the Sun Protect Conditioner aids moisture retention and strengthens the hair follicles. Sun Protect Elixir, with a rich blend of nourishing oils, protects and smooths the hair cuticles, while the leave-in Sunshine Spray provides all-day shine and softness. The haircare range is suitable for all hair types. Joelle also has an extensive line of professional products that target more specific problems such as hair loss, dry or damaged hair and fading hair colour. There is also a sulphate-free shampoo and accompanying conditioner, especially developed to prolong your keratin treatment. “The thing that keeps me going is the love of my fans. I feel I am responsible to produce great things for them,” says Joelle. “I am trying to create the best of the best. And having the knowledge of what the region needs is great for me because it allows me to produce things for them, for their own needs.” **ALL JOELLE PARIS PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT MAISON DE JOELLE SALONS AND WOJOOH OUTLETS.

STAND-UP AGAINST OBESITY
In a build-up to Anti-Obesity Day on November 26th, VLCC has announced the launch of the annual anti-obesity campaign to raise greater awareness about the ill effects of this global pandemic. 'Stand Up Qatar', is a public awareness campaign that seeks to make people aware of the pitfalls of prolonged sitting, urging them to be more active. People who sit for 6-7hours every day are at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and shorter life spans, as well as becoming over-weight, even if they exercise, according to studies. This risk can be reduced by standing for at least one-fourth of the day. VLCC’s anti-obesity campaign will see a series of public initiatives that includes workshops, health camps and counseling sessions, to make people aware of the dangers of obesity. Commencing with food label-reading sessions that will be held at prominent hypermarkets and supermarkets across Qatar, dieticians will educate people on how to know the nutritional value of food, to ensure healthy eating. VLCC will also launch ‘Adopt a Client’ initiative where over 40 clients will be adopted by all VLCC Wellness Centres, GCC-wide. Trained relationship managers assigned to the clients will help them through their journey in battling obesity and other weight-related issues. A ‘Stand-A-Thon’ event where participants will be asked to stand up in one position for the longest duration without moving will also take place. The event is open to all and interested persons can visit the campaign website www.orangepledge.com to register.

The ever fashionforward Italian fashion house is all about lifestyle, and aims at quality, innovation and aesthetic refinement. It was created by Gimmo Etro, who wanted to develop a fashion line inspired by his passion for traveling and history. From its first collections, Etro has employed precious fabrics such as cashmere, silk, linen, and cotton, and has crafted them into fresh designs with modern cuts and patterns.
