G Talk as it unfortunate timing? On the night of the grand opening of QELA, The Guardian released an investigative report on alleged ‘modern-day slavery’ in Qatar’s construction industry. So while one side of the city was eagerly reviewing the inaugural fashion collection of the country’s first homegrown luxury brand, the other was up-in -arms about the horrors of what is happening in the underbelly of this city. Sure, the celebrations were considered frivolous but objectively, it is two different topics altogether. It is unfair that some had taken to the Internet to lambast qela as a mean to vent their anger after reading the report. QELA had been a project that was keenly-followed by many, in and out of Qatar. The fashion set has heard rumours but there was never a straight out confirmation on the brand, until the opening night of the brand’s inaugural boutique. Many of the guests present were surprised, some pleasantly and some puzzled, at the final products on the retail floor. No bright shiny things? No jalabiyas? Is this truly an Arabian brand? More initial opinions had formed, many who are less than impressed and felt that the project that took years to come to life, could have been much more than what was presented in its debut collection. But really, are we jumping into conclusions too quickly? The biggest of fashion labels in the world have taken much longer to really find their footing. And what more, QELA is a brand that is trying to position itself as something of a reserved old soul, that needs nurturing and a discovery process with its clientele, and not just a label that is eager to shout to the world. We think it takes a certain knowledge and open-mindedness to slowly appreciate what the true essence of QELA is. In the pages of our exclusive and low-key fashion editorial this month, we capture the understated beginning of the Qatari brand, one whose wings are spread and will slowly take flight.

Roberto Cavalli renames collection

Peter Pilotto hits the high street Peter Pilotto is the next designer to create a high street collection for US chain Target. Unlike previous Target collaborators, the range will also be available internationally via net-a-porter.com. They will sell a curated assortment of the limited-edition offering from February 9, 2014. “By working with Target, we’re able to broaden our reach and bring our design aesthetic to an entirely new audience,” said one half of the design duo, Peter Pilotto. “This is a pivotal moment for our brand,” added co-creative director Christopher De Vos. “Our collection for Target embodies the elegance and spirit of our own line, but makes it accessible to everyone.” The label’s signature digital prints will appear throughout the collection, in bright blue, green, red and orange. The 70-piece range will span ready-to-wear, accessories and swimwear, with prices starting at QR 55 to QR 300. The pairing will see the British label reach a broader audience than ever before. “We think Target is an amazing brand and have long admired their exceptionally produced designer collaborations,” said Net-A-Porter fashion director Holli Rogers. “We have believed in Peter Pilotto for years, and being able to offer our global customer base accessibly priced pieces from such a talented design duo is such a phenomenal opportunity.”

The Italian designer has rebranded the CLASS Roberto Cavalli collection. First launched in 1997 Cavalli’s so-called bridge line has now been renamed Cavalli CLASS, and rebranded with a swanky new logo: “I wanted to highlight the Cavalli name in the logo of this collection which has always given me incredible creative and commercial satisfactions,” said the 72-year-old designer. “This is a way to draw it even closer to the world, the fantasies and the imagination from which all the Cavalli collections originate.” In honour of the name change and the new logo, the designer has put together a special capsule collection for Spring 2014. Composed of 37 pieces, the collection was inspired by the cinematic culture of the 1950s and the era’s glamorous movie stars including Anna Magnani, Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers, Joan Collins and Fay Wray. “This collection is dedicated to women who love life and the positivity of prints and colours. Sensual women with a refined beauty, whose spirit is deeply romantic and always an amazing source of inspiration,” added Cavalli. Dominated by colourful prints, including the house’s traditional ‘Colour Stripes Snake’ animal print, the collection features feminine wide tulip skirts, plexiglass accessories, and printed bags, and should hit stores in early 2014.

Burberry celebrates Art of the Trench in Shanghai Burberry brought its digital platform, Art of the Trench, to life physically for the first time in Asia recently with an event celebrating Shanghai and its creative community. The event, hosted by British actress and face of Burberry Body Tender, Cara Delevingne, took place at the Burberry K11 store in Shanghai and was attended by over 450 guests including Bolin Chen, Denise Ho, Du Juan, Tian Yuan, Emma Pei, Han Huo Huo, Bonnie Chen, Linda Li, Li Hui, Tan Yuanyuan and Li Da Qi, all of whom wore Burberry and were shot for Art of the Trench. The event, which celebrated all facets of the brand including music, innovation and the trench coat, was an immersive physical and digital Art of the Trench take over, with guests being able to explore the portraits via interactive touch screens throughout the store. Burberry store windows throughout the city were also transformed to celebrate the merging iconic London and Shanghai skylines, and showcasing the Art of the Trench portraits on LED screens. As part of a global celebration of the site, Burberry has hosted Art of the Trench events in Chicago, Brazil and India, and has further events planned in Paris, Seoul, Kiev and Istanbul later this year.

Mulberry A/W 13 bags The Catwalk Collection introduces a new bag for A/W 2013; the Suffolk. Taking inspiration from the iconic Bayswater, with its postman’s lock and internal leather strap detailing, the Suffolk is loaded with heritage detailing as well as a new frame-topped closure to complement the structured leather shape. The Bayswater Shoulder also revisits the bag icon, in a neat shoulder bag style with a chic top handle. On the smaller size the postman’s lock is replaced with a seasonal accent – two intricately carved ladybirds taken from the Mini Meadows print design. The Tasha collection’s clipper-inspired shape was introduced for Autumn Winter 2013 Main Collection and is seen on the catwalk with a statement twist. Beautiful hardware is brought to the forefront, reworking new metalwork such as the front luggage tag and buckle detailing.

Wadha Al Hajri’s AW2013 The brightest of talents are often the ones who are the most quiet. Qatar’s new design prodigy Wadha Al Hajri made her much considered yet low profile launch earlier this year at a special one-day only event at Mathaf, captivating guests with her AW2013 collection. The collection, which is now available for order, is a refreshing and international entry into the local design scene which is beginning to tire out from a tad too many traditional interpretations. Clean lines, clear motifs, and dreamy separates makes for a feminine and modest wardrobe that we are all lusting for. Order at info@wadha.co

The Return of the Sculptural

Pepe Jeans x Andy Warhol

Fall is perhaps the most tempting time for us to curl under oversized sweaters and jackets but this year, take a cue from the runway and let sharp shapes give you warmth. Sculptural shapes oozes an immediate sleekness and no-nonsense personality, and flatters almost all body shapes. Pick these looks from Christian Dior’s A/W 2013 collection for a special evening.

This London-based punk denim label has grown up with the wild party days of Brit glory. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Pepe Jeans launches a range of special collections including one inspired by Andy Warhol. Focusing on the Studio 54 era which informed Warhol’s 1970s archive, the emphasis this season is on colourblocking and print-clashing. Muted shots of teal, antiqued indigo and blush pink are contrasted against bright shots of paint-box primary colours. Pepe Jeans is located at Lagoona Mall and Ezdan Mall.

Tod’s Eyewear Fancy sharing your shades with your man? The new candy crushing colours on Tod’s limited edition eyewear collection is certainly keeping us chirpy as we move into fall. The unisex pieces in tortoiseshell brown, mustard yellow and light blue is highlighted with contrasting shades. But what really makes us head over heels this time is the 60s retro factor that will certainly make you a bona fide hipster. Tod’s boutique is located at Villaggio Mall.

For the love of Prada We must admit, that every time we had walked past the hoarding board in Villaggio Mall bearing the Prada logo in Arabic script, our hearts skipped a beat. It had been a long wait and finally, the much-anticipated Italian favourite has arrived and the hoarding board is no more. In its place, a 545 square meters of utter Prada decadence that we have come to be familiar with. The architect of choice, Roberto Baciocchi of course, does his magic and the result is a marriage of Marquina marble with black and white checker floors, mirrored walls, circular crystal tables, and green velvet sofas. And though the wait had been long, there could be no better time to launch the boutique than with the AW 2013 collection, one that is almost like a Best Of Hits album from Miuccia Prada. The signature coats, the clunky shoes, the nonchalance of wet slick hair and all the embodiment of femininity that is Prada comes together in this collection. Now available at Villaggio Mall.

Fashion Exchange Three rising design stars, Elham Al-Ansari, Fathiya Al-Jaber and Hessa Al-Mannai, had their fashion moments when they presented their collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London.

T

he Qatari fashion designers are emerging female entrepreneurs from Roudha Center who were selected to present their creations as part of Fashion Exchange, a series of fashion events that form the full calendar of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture. Presented as a fashion dialogue between the two countries, the collections from the Qatari designers were paired with the creations of renowned milliner Philip Treacy and accessories from the quintessential British label, Asprey. The showcase of abayas, jalabiyas and kaftans is aimed at widening global perspectives on the abaya and the role of the garment in Gulf societies. "This spectacular show provides a platform for emerging Qatari designers whilst showcasing the work of one of UK's most respected designers. This unique collaboration will cultivate recognition, understanding, and appreciation of Qatari culture, and explore possibilities for the future, which is exactly what Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture is all about," said Graham Sheffield, Director of Arts for the British Council and Chair of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture Steering Committee

said. In December, Fashion Exchange continues with six upcoming British designers selected by British Fashion Council, travelling to Qatar for a series of shows in Dohaís elegant Salam Gate Mall. Fashion Exchange will culminate in a private show with established designers like Alice Temperley and Philip Treacy at IM Peiís spectacular Museum of Islamic Art, featuring Temperleyís iconic gowns and Spring Summer 2014 collection, and handbags and hats by Treacy. Fashion Exchange forms part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture which celebrates the long-standing relationship between the two countries and aims to forge new and support existing partnerships in the arts, education, sport and science, while promoting an awareness and appreciation of each countryís culture, achievements and heritage. The Year of Culture is a programme of cultural exchanges and events in Qatar and the UK coordinated by the British Council and Qatar Museums Authority with the support of their respective Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs and a number of leading British and Qatari cultural and educational organisations. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, are Patrons of Qatar UK 2013.

ANDROGYNY MEETS DOMINATRIX We were wondering if the shoes this fall were influenced by the popularity of the bestseller, 50 Shades of Grey, with many dominatrix-inspired heels dominating the runway. The dangerously sexy trend is one that vamps out your look so be sure to balance it out with a demure outfit to ace this trend. While many of us feminine dressers may find it hard to incorporate sneakers into our shoe roster, fall is definitely a great time to give this trend a go. The wedge sneaker is a surefire way to get your outfit going, giving you the instant height and lift with the hidden heel. One style tip is to pair it with slim pants or leggings as it helps elongate your legs as wedge sneakers can be unflattering when it cuts off at your ankles.

London Fashion Week SS14's

Greatest Hits By DEBRINA ALIYAH

It mostly rained, with little bit of sunshine but that did not stop the style makers from rushing venue to venue to catch the presentations of what's to come next in fashion next spring. And it definitely did not dampen the street style spirits of the guests at the events. Here's an edit of the greatest hits that happened on and off the runways.

01. The Buzz

The most prolific and jam-packed show was, of course, Burberry's at West Albert Lawn. Christopher Bailey presented a collection themed English Rose, and literally sent a rain of rose petals onto the runway at the end of the show.

It's a shame that us modern women don't wear hats enough these days. Headonism is a British Fashion Council initiative curated by Stephen Jones, to celebrate the new wave of emerging London milliners. Time to get your headgear on!

RUNWAY REPORT / 53

Expect flowers, lots and lots of flowers and floral motifs in the SS14 collections, a recurrent trend in many of the designers’ presentations.

Time to practise your grip, the hottest bag trend in SS14 will be the clutch. Oversized clutches and even clutching your tote as seen at Anya Hindmarch’s presentation.

Tom Ford's SS14 collection was much hyped about for its sensual and sexy interpretations. We were absolutely intrigued by this pair of lace-up boots cum fishnet stockings.

One Direction being the biggest thing in the UK right now, Harry Styles was spotted on the front row of many a show, creating quite a fan-mania every ‘directioin’ he went.

Nicholas Kirkwood was the man of the moment, winning the 2013 BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund, designing the brand campaign for the SS14 LFW and being acquired by LVMH all in the recent months.

And what’s the best way to showcase a designer collection of work out apparel? Get the models working out of course, seen at the adidas by Stella McCartney presentation.

02. Postcards from London

Comfort First - Pajama jumpsuit gets a glam makeover

Bunny Ears - international press from Japan graced every show with his headgear. Round Rims - glasses are going retro this season

Shoe Party - these Tory Burch heels is a party on its own

Hilary Alexander - the most understated fashion journalist of all time.

Leopards Unite - animal prints all together now

Punk Represent - there has got to be some rebellion somewhere during fashion week

Colour Burst - the cold weather is no excuse to not wear colours

RUNWAY REPORT / 55

03. Longchamp Regent Street store opening With Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof on the DJ deck dishing out the kind of tunes that everyone can groove to, (think Rihanna and Snoop Dogg), the party was through the roof with a full-house attendance from who’s who of the global fashion set. The private party at the Longchamp boutique on Regent Street, London, was to celebrate the grand opening of the flagship store, La Maison in Motion. Ferragamo:

From shoes to more the italian story BY sindhu nair

To understand the history and precedence of the brand, Salvatore Ferragamo, you need to have a deep respect for the “Made in Italy” exclusivity, which is in essence the DNA of the brand.

T

he pride in being a product from the lap of a country suffused in art and a deep respect for the craftsmen who carry on the traditions, as envisioned by the founder, Salvatore Ferragamo. For Giovanna Gentile Ferragamo, Vice-President of the Salvatore Ferragamo Groups, as well the founder’s daughter, the most coveted value that Ferragamo as a brand holds on to is coherence to the roots. She says that the brand tries to keep to the traditions held dear to her father even years after his death. Every product, from the clothing line to the perfume range, are all backed by a passion for the country, with a tinge of the craftsmanship and the beauty of the Tuscany countryside whispering in all products. The story of Salvatore Ferragamo is straight out of the pages of a fairy tale. It is a story of a young man’s passion for shoes that look as well as feel good. The story of a man who was so enamoured by the anatomy of a foot that he sailed miles to

study and understand this rare art. So goes the story of the legend Ferragamo, once upon a time there was a boy named Salvatore. The eleventh of fourteen children, he was born in 1898 in Bonito, a small village near Naples, with a handful of houses, one main road and lots of countryside. His parents were farmers and their life consisted of waiting and praying for a good harvest. Each chapter of his story and even its happy ending, hold the appeal of an imaginary tale: young Salvatore’s ocean voyage to the United States in search of the secret behind a shoe with the perfect fit; the juxtaposition of Italy with the new, immense and yet familiar country; the opening of a small shop for shoe repairs and custom-made shoes in California, which soon becomes famous; Salvatore’s success in Hollywood; and film, the seventh art, with the power to turn back time and obliterate space, making anything possible, even for a young Italian shoemaker, who finds himself, before he knows it, fitting the most beautiful women in the world, the princesses and sorceresses of the 20th century for his custom-made shoes. Salvatore’s creativity, his experimentation with materials

and his miraculous ability to restore health to feet through shoes made him a legend the world respected. He fashioned shoes for the wealthiest and most powerful women of the century, from the Maharani of Cooch Behar to Eva Peron to Marilyn Monroe. He opened a workshop in the Via Mannelli, concentrating his efforts in experimenting with design, applying for patents for ornamental and utility models and some related inventions. Ferragamo was always recognised as a visionary, and his designs ranged from the strikingly bizarre objet d’art to the traditionally elegant, often serving as the main inspiration to other footwear designers of his time and beyond. alvatore Ferragamo died in 1960 at the age of 62, but his name lived on as an international company, which has expanded its

operations to include luxury shoes, bags, eyewear, silk accessories, watches, perfumes and a ready-towear clothing line. After his death, his wife Wanda and later their six children ran the Ferragamo Company took over the helm of the company. His wife had said, ‘I felt I was the depository of his dreams’ and she did just that taking the brand to new heights while still keeping traditions of a family business alive. According to Giovanna, her mother Wanda’s, determination and her unquestionable love for her beloved husband, helped sustain the company and then later expand its operations. “We lovingly called her The Boss. But she was very clever and passionate,” remembers this daughter. In 1960, the brand launched its ready to wear collection and then history was made as the collection was accepted by the media and a loyal following. The company is currently going through one of its best phases with business booming and new launches in its perfumes segment etc. Salvatore Ferragamo’s core earnings rose by 26% in the first half of 2013 and according to the CEO, Ferruccio Ferragamo, the increase is due both to an increase in revenues and to improved operational efficiency.” Massimiliano Giornetti, the creative director of the group, who started off the designer of their men’s wear collection, is a much adored member of the team and as Giovanna puts it, “He is very accessible, very creative and still so down-to-earth.”

His most famous invention is arguably the “Cage Heel”. Fiamma (Salvatore’s eldest daughter who died in 1998) inherited her father’s inimitable talent and came up with the “Vara pumps” in 1978. But according to Giovanna, it was the invisible shoe which was one of her father’s best creations. “It was so clever, equilibrium in form and function was attained,” she says. History to celebrate And to celebrate his story which is now part of history, the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Palazzo Spini Feroni, Florence has curated a show titled The Amazing Shoemaker. This exhibition created and curated by Stefania Ricci, Sergio Risaliti, Luca Scarlini is on show till March 2014.

Ethan Koh:

A marriage of many BY DEBRINA ALIYAH

FOURTH GENERATION SINGAPOREAN LEATHER ARTISAN VENTURES INTO HIS OWN BESPOKE LEATHER LABEL IN EUROPE, EXPENDING THE SKILLS OF CRAFTSMEN IN TUSCANY, CATERING TO THE MOST DISCERNING STYLE MAKERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

fOCUS / 61

We

hear tales of children of scions and dynasties squabbling away fortunes with little interest in the legacy their forefathers had founded. And then there is Ethan Koh, a 26-year-old, wise beyond his age, who is deeply immersed in the art that surrounds the leather tanning empire that his family has built. Heng Leong International finds its roots in Singapore, the brainchild of Koh’s great-grandfather who learnt the art of exotic leather tanning from the British in the late 19th century. The tannery grew to be one of the biggest in the world, supplying leather to distinguished houses including Hermes, and in 2011, LVMH bought a controlling stake in the business. Coming from such storied legacy of craftsmen, Koh is armed with a unique skill set and experience that can hardly be rivaled, and it is no wonder, his new eponymous bespoke venture has seen quick success. What is it that has inspired you the most to create beautiful bags and launch your own bespoke label? Unlike any other artisan, I have four generations of exotic skin tanning expertise. I grew up with my family’s tannery at the back of my home, which meant that I have always had a special interest in the artisanal secrets of tanning exotic skins. When I moved to London to pursue my dream of designing precious creations, I was inspired by my surroundings. Whether this was the shape of a door handle in Mayfair or a mirror at Claridges hotel, I took inspiration from each and this can be seen in my work. My heritage also plays a huge role in my designs, for example each skin is tanned matching the colours of the Asian flavours I have grown up with.

The most precious are South African Niloticus crocodiles, and Mississippiensis alligators from Louisiana are the rarest and most exquisite

How involved is your family in your own label? My family is incredibly encouraging. The first bag I created was for my mother and her opinions and ideas have always strengthened my designs. I was lucky to be able to see a lot of the world when I was growing up and my parents made sure I saw the beauty and inspiration in everything. Coming from a family business, I watched from a young age, as my father carefully brushed the exotic skins in the tannery and it is this passion that has been instilled in my work. Appreciation for exotic skins is something that has to be nurtured; clearly not everyone would understand this essence. Can you share some of the finer qualities of the different skins, and the techniques to finding the right fit? There are different skins which can be used to make handbags. The most precious ones are Niloticus crocodile from South Africa, Mississippiensis alligator from Louisiana and the rarest and most exquisite of all exotic skins, Porosus crocodile from Australia because the scales are smaller and more refined. When looked after with care, the exotic skins show remarkable solidity and durability, even gaining beauty through the years. While an exotic skin bag only gets better with use, it also develops an attractive patina through time. The tanning process is a very artistic one. While some say it is 100% science, I consider it to be half science and half art. Once tanned, I observe the skins in the early morning light, and then the afternoon light, and then under artificial light in the evening to see how each affects the skin. This personal touch is what sets me apart from others. How has your time in Tuscany influenced your work? When I visit my ateliers in Tuscany, I love to watch them handle the exotic skins. Their craftsmanship and experience always inspires me. They craft the skins with their heart. My experiences and encounters are part of my journey in creating each of my pieces. For example, each of my creation houses a small mirror

in the shape of a grand mirror at the Claridges Hotel. I would always see this mirror on my visits to the hotel and was inspired to have this symbol of London as part of each creation. Do you think the price inflation of exotic skins has also contributed to the inaccessibility of the end-products by consumers hence, creating a gap in knowledge on these items? The price inflation is one thing to consider but what is unique is not the price of the skin, but the artisan who chooses them. Someone who is given the most prized diamond cannot necessarily cut it in the best way. In the same way, what my clients respect me for is that I personally select each skin and visualise the bag before it is cut.

fOCUS / 63

We are a niche company and I don’t have a big design team, which means that I can oversee the entire journey of each bag from beginning to end. By nature, crocodile skin is rare but we can see that our clients want something as a collection piece, something bespoke to them. How do you start in creating bags dedicated to individual clients? Luxury is about experiences and encounters. A few months ago, I visited a client in her home in London. As we sat in her garden, I saw an array of beautiful violet flowers, which inspired me to create a colour especially for her. The infusion of being a designer and artist is all about using the joy of someone’s life to create something special for them. I like to spend the day with my client to be inspired and see what influences are in their lives. Recently, a very special Middle Eastern client told me she wanted a bag to match both her abaya and her casual wear. Having spent the day with her, I created the Tani bag with a removable chain, so she can sling it over her abaya or use the top handle when styling it with other outfits. This level of service makes my clients feel truly special. This is particularly important for those who have the money to purchase anything they wish but seek the unique and distinctive. How do you feel about the growing market in Middle East? While everyone has the perception of the Middle East being a new luxury market, our clients are different. She has everything

“Coming from a family business, I watched from a young age, as my father carefully brushed the exotic skins in the tannery and it is this passion that has been instilled in my work.” in her wardrobe but wants to be inspired by something unique. My approach is quite old-fashioned but my Middle Eastern clients, who fly in for a day or two to spend time with me, really appreciate that it is important for me to have this personal experience with them. Ethan K is available at the Copia VIP office in Dubai and in Harrods, London.

What’s your purse-onality? By Fiona May

The type of handbag you opt for and the way you carry it could reveal hidden aspects of your personality

P

eople often say that a woman’s handbag is an extension of herself. Ask yourself, would you really venture out of your house sans handbag? Maybe you are the type of woman who has a different handbag for every occasion, or just one trusty leather handbag that you take everywhere, rain or shine. But what you might not realise is that the type of handbag you own and the way you carry it can say a lot about your personality.

The luxury designer bag A designer bag says that you are a woman who has a taste for the finer things in life and who may be high maintenance. It shows that you care more about appearance than practicality and you like to show off your good taste to the rest of the world. It’s also an indicator that you come from a wealthy background, or that you have a high-flying career and the handbag is a badge of your success. Louis Vuitton Vivienne available at LV Boutique , Villaggio Mall for QR15,108

The backpack Wearing a backpack indicates that you are a jet-setter, always ready and prepared for an adventure. It shows that you opt for practicality over appearances and style. Since backpacks are a favourite of school-age children, wearing one also suggests that you are warm and young-at-heart. MCM Studded Backpack at LuisaViaRoma for QR8,609.

The tote You are practical and always prepared – you have everything stashed in your bag just in case a situation arises – deodorant, snacks, band-aids, a fold-up camping tent, you’ve got it all. And once your friends see you brandishing your tote, they will flock to you when they are feeling hungry/ smelly. However, a tote also says that you are a hoarder, especially if your bag is filled with junk. Michael Kors Quilted Bag available at Salam Studio & Stores.

The messenger bag Wearing a messenger bag across your body says that you are a multi-tasker who likes to have her hands free. Organised and efficient, putting all your essentials into the different little compartments. Proenza Schouler PS1 at www. lanecrawford.com for QR5,851.

The clutch Big enough to only hold your wallet, car keys and lipstick, carrying a clutch says that you are a minimalist who likes things to be clean and simple. It also says that you are a mover, ready to get and up and go at any moment. The fact that you only carry a minimal amount of items says that you are not afraid to let things go. How you carry your handbag The arm-crook A favorite of paparazzi-loving celebrities like Victoria Beckham, wearing your bag straps over the crook of your arm says that you are over-confident, empowered and perhaps even feel a sense of superiority. The twofer Doing the twofer, i.e. holding your bag with both hands indicates that you are shy, thoughtful and perhaps a little vulnerable, as holding your bag with two hands to the front of your body suggests that you are trying to protect yourself. Draped over your arm, towards your back Draping your bag over your arm towards your back says that you are carefree and have a lack of awareness, as wearing your bag towards your back puts you in a vulnerable position in the face of passer-bys and possible pick-pockets. Under your armpit You may think carrying your clutch or chain bag under your

armpit frees up your hands and shows that you are a multi-tasker but in fact it’s an uncomfortable way to carry your bag, and says that you don’t care what other people think about you. Across the front of your body Wearing your chain bag or messenger bag across your body says that you like to keep your hands free at all times and that you’re practical. However it could also say that you want to cover up, as the bag disguises your silhouette. Baguette style Seen on many a street style model and blogger, scooping up your bag into your arm like French bread indicates that you are on the go, have somewhere to get to and care less about the type of bag than protecting what you have in it. Schlepping With three or four bags to carry at once, you haul them over your shoulder and don’t really care where they go as long as they fit. This indicates that you are occupied, in a rush and unable to focus.

What’s in your bag? By Fiona May

It is a million-dollar question, really. Things get lost in our bags and sometimes, we just cannot seem to find what we want. Are we carrying too much in our bags? Two GLAM readers bravely volunteered for a sneak peek into their precious bags.

Portable culinary kit “This is my emergency eating kit. It contains a spoon, fork and even assembly chopsticks. Being the foodie I am I like to have them on hand. I hate going places and being given a plastic fork and spoon.”

Kultura wallet “It’s a natural fiber wallet I got from a shop in the Philippines called Kultura, which means culture. The shop sells anything that is Filipino-made, and all the goods are made from natural materials. For example, this wallet is made from dried pineapple leaves.”

Dolce & Gabbana make up bag “The Dolce & Gabbana make up bag was a hand-me-down from my make up artist mom who told me to essentially bring loose powder, lipstick and eyeliner with me wherever I went. I learned in time that blush, eye pallet, lash curler and mascara were also necessities that I couldn’t live without.”

Pill box “You never know when you’re going to get a headache or uncomfortable shoes, so it’s good to always have some Advil and band-aids on hand.”

Laura finnerty producer and presenter at QF Radio

QF Radio presenter Laura is always on the go, hosting shows, or out and about Doha at events, press conferences and interviews, and this is reflected in her sense of style and choice of handbag. Laura describes her style as “casual and feminine, while I’m at work I go for something more practical, but out of work I like wearing more colour.” Cambridge satchel “This was a gift from my friends back in England. It’s quite convenient because it’s big enough to put my laptop in. It’s like a reporter’s bag with all the little compartments and it’s quite a conservative colour which is good for work. It’s also got my initials on it.” iPhone “I can’t live without my iPhone, it’s an addiction.” iPod “I always always have my iPod with me, in the gym or the office I always like to listen to my music.” iPad “My iPad allows me to do research when I’m out and about, and I have it with me when I’m on air, it allows easy access to Twitter and scripts.”

Sony recorder “I always carry my recorder around with me because the thing about living in Doha is that you never know who you might run into, so it’s quite handy for doing interviews while on the go.” Leather notebook and pen “I have my notebook on hand to take down notes in press conferences. I’m always doodling and writing things down.” Paul Smith sunglasses “Obviously living in Doha I couldn’t imagine driving here without sunglasses.” Louis Vuitton wallet “This was a birthday present.” Vaseline lip balm “Just an essential, with the air conditioning it’s very hydrating, even for my eyes because my skin becomes quite dry.” Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream “Another super hydrating product, it helps keep my feet and hands and face hydrated. It’s a bit of a life saver.” Painkillers “Everyone always wants painkillers. It’s one of those things everyone needs but doesn’t have on them.”

fOCUS / 73 THE CHALLENGE Being the type of woman who puts so much in her bag it’s splitting at the seams (perfume samples, business cards, several packets of chewing gum, you name it, it’s in there) the Glam team challenged me to carry just five items in my bag for three days. This is what happened.

DAY 1

After much deliberation, I decided that I can’t leave the house without the following five items: BlackBerry, wallet, eyeliner, lipstick and compact foundation. I went to Landmark mall with a friend and did not need more than my wallet to pay for my drink at Paul’s and lipstick for a quick touch-up. This isn’t too hard so far. Let’s see what happens when I go to work tomorrow.

DAY 2

I went to work today and discovered I needed a lot of the items I usually carry around with me. I had no charger to charge my phone and had a walkabout around the office to find someone who had one. I kept looking in my bag for my supply of chewing gum and remembering that it wasn’t there. I couldn’t freshen myself up mid-way through the day because my body spray and perfume were at home.

DAY 3

Today went pretty much like yesterday. I was bored on the half-hour drive to work as I did not have my trusty iPod which I like listening to, to distract me from the morning traffic. I also had to make a mad dash to the supermarket when my period started as I did not have my usual emergency stash of sanitary pads. What this challenge has taught me is that I should pack my handbag to fit the outing accordingly. Flash drives, wire transfer cables and sheets of Panadol are unnecessary for a trip down to my local supermarket, but are very necessary when I’m at work all day.

Wondering how to maintain glowing and healthy skin in this weather? Living in Doha with almost 365 days of sun, most think of us as lucky. I know my family back home in France is jealous of me! But for some, it can become a major inconvenience because with the sun, also comes dark spots, hyper pigmentation, freckles, and of course premature skin ageing. But weather aside, these problems can occur with stress, pollution, smoking or regular use of low quality skin care products. The easiest solution would be to stay away from the sun. I can already hear you saying that it is not so easy in Doha unless if you just spend your day shopping! Fortunately, there are many other possible treatments from simple and effective homemade remedies and good healthy habits that will result in great skin. I am pretty sure that you know you should use a sunscreen daily, but I will repeat myself because you can never have too much protection. Wear a sunscreen daily; especially on your face and hands, as they are the most sun-exposed part of your body, even when it is cloudy, or when you are indoors as sun rays can pass through clouds and windows. Please do not forget your lips! Sunscreen should be applied at least 30 minutes before going outdoors to get the best benefits.

own spa session. I can promise you will have a great time and lots of fun. To complete your homemade facial; here are some products to help you get a healthier skin from our spa. I highly recommend the Remede Intensive Double Serum with oxygen and vitamin C, a unique combination that increases collagen synthesis, brightens and even tones the skin and protects against UV damage. You will need to apply this before your daily face cream every morning, for improved benefits you can as well apply every night before going to bed. Remede also has a Skin Exacting Masque with Vitamin A, C and E combined with a unique cocktail of essential oils and extracts including apricot, black currant, juniper, lavender and mint to correct hyper pigmentation, energise the complexion, and smooth your skin texture creating a healthy glow. You can also come to our spa, not just to relax in our amazing Jacuzzi, but as well to try our 90 minutes Remede Customised Facial. This facial is the best because the therapist can really focus on your needs while still making it a relaxing experience. It will include a double exfoliation – an extraction which will both improve your complexion by removing the dull skin cells and all toxins located in the superficial layers of your skin. We will add an oxygen spray combined with a cocktail of Vitamins A, C and E to have the skin you always dream of, brighter with a radiant glow. And do not forget that healthy habits always lead to a brighter skin. So avoid smoking which will speed up the ageing process and we do not want that right? And eat healthy; Vitamin C is one of the main ingredients with brightening, anti-ageing and anti-stress properties. So think fruits like orange, kiwi, strawberry or vegetables such as cucumber, bell pepper and broccoli. What you eat will reflect in your skin.

Healthy habits always lead to a brighter skin. So avoid smoking which will speed up the ageing process. We do not want that right?

Home Remedies Let’s talk now about the homemade remedies to help you have a brighter skin. First and foremost, you will need exfoliation to give your skin an immediate glow and to improve your skin absorption in order to increase the effects of the products applied after. One effective homemade exfoliant is brown sugar mixed with honey. Sugar acts as the scrubbing agent while honey is the softening and antibacterial agent. It is very effective and easy to put together. After the scrub, you can use a homemade mask made out of plain yogurt and lemon juice. Lemon juice can be applied directly on to dark spots but it may sting a little which is why I prefer mixing it with plain yogurt. Leave it on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes and if you have some leftover just eat it! What’s good for your skin is good for your body too. If you have time, invite some of your girlfriends over and create your

Weak knee-ed at theW By Abigail Mathias

D

When you are offered a complimentary stay at one of the hippest hotels in the city, you have to pinch yourself a couple of times.

espite my resistance to being lured in to the lap of luxury, I found myself defeated right at the checkin counter. I have always wondered what the W, in W Hotel stands for. During my stay, a few ideas come to mind. I suppose they try to keep up with the mystery by adding the W-factor to everything. The traditional ‘do not disturb’ sign is replaced with ‘When?’ The mat on the floor has a clever ‘Why barefoot?’ By the end of the stay, I even wondered if the W was a synonym for Wonderful... The W- Corner Suite which I occupied had its own cozy business corner overlooking the West Bay office district. The other side of the room is covered in clear glass offering a scenic view of Doha with the peaceful sea at the far end. It is easy to sink into the sheer opulence around me. I’m a hotel-loving kind of girl. Perhaps it is the crisp white sheets, or the fact that you can call for room service and a wake up call. What set this place apart, are the small touches in the room. A sign on the large LCD TV says, ‘Welcome to the W, Ms. Mathias.’ Okay it may be something that most hotels do, but it sure feels welcome. The chocolates on the table with a handwritten note offering ready assistance, were a nice touch as well. With fierce competition, it is probably the little things that will go a long way, making one return to a hotel time and again or recommend it to others. After spending sufficient time admiring the facilities, I drag myself out of the room, to head for dinner. It is at ‘The Market.’ To the uninitiated, this is a contemporary dining place whose breakfast buffet is also worth a mention. The breakfast spread is large serving everything from sushi to freshly made crepes. Most of the staff (who were unaware of the fact that I was reviewing the hotel), were all pleasant and polite. For dinner, I ordered the braised spring chicken which is cooked to perfection. The dessert is equally satisfying as is the thought that I have just a few steps to

my cozy bed (topped with crisp white sheets) awaiting me. I take the chance to walk down, yes walk down the road to City Centre and catch the late night movie. Simple pleasures are made of these. The next morning is equally surreal. It is a Friday and as is customary, most of Doha’s West Bay is still asleep till way past 10 am. After channel surfing a few times, I request for a guided tour of the hotel and residences. Eric, a tall Swedish long-haired member of the staff was happy to show me the biggest and most lavish suites on the property. After lifting my jaw from the floor, I return to my somewhat humble corner suite and spent the rest of the day wondering if I’d turned off all the lights in my actual house. The temptation to drive down to check on the house is swiftly brushed aside. 24 hours have passed in sinful laziness. I make it a point to visit the gym only because the swimming pool is closed due to bad weather. 30 minutes on the treadmill and I feel like a champion. Never mind that other women are at it way longer. Thankfully the weather improves and before checking out I make sure to use the open air pool. It isn’t lavish by Qatar standards but it will do. I’m tempted to achieve total ‘Bliss’ by stopping by at the spa, but I reserve that for another day. Weekends were never better spent. Rony Sahyouni, Director of Residences has been with the hotel since it began operations, six years ago. Obviously to him, it is more than just a venue. It is quite literally the place he helps others call home. “We have had people who have stayed at our residences since the hotel was launched six years ago in 2007,” claims Rony. “We are proud to offer the ‘Whatever, whenever concept,’ which basically meets all the needs of our guests.” The hotel has one and two bedroom apartments and these are regularly booked from one to three months at a stretch. “80 percent of this business tends to extend depending on the needs of our guests. We are always improving our services as well,” explains the director who informs that a new automated system of parking has been introduced for residents of the hotel. The W group is hoping to build two new hotels in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi. According to Rony, “There is one in Cairo and another in Morocco. “However, so far we are still the unique W in the Middle East.”
