G Talk eauty lies in the eye of the beholder, they say. To me, beauty lies in the details, in the small things that mean a big deal. The fine web woven effortlessly by a tiny spider, the beauty of the miniscule bird sitting atop the green vast tree, the patterns of a print that make the whole dress so attractive, that last look from your “soon-to-be-a teen” nine-year-old before she reluctantly boards the bus for school, the tearful glance from your mother when you leave her and your hometown after the yearly vacation...the list is endless, but the magnificence IN each detail, infinite. This issue of Glam, we look at the details of the Autumn/Winter trends that will soon flood the market, the mid-century styled skirts, the sexy form and detailing of Atelier Versace’s couture collection, Osman’s rise to fame, Lama Hourani’s desire to give back to society and Gisele Bundchen’s passion for Mother Earth. And the best of all, the history behind the legacy of Bourjois and the fact that this brand traces its history to the painted faces of the theatre and ballet performers, 150 years ago. A simple detail that made the brand what it is today... It is these details that make Glam what it is, this love for fashion and an eye for that infinitesimal story that makes us all sit up in awe. Read these stories and be inspired, just like we were.

Editor’s Pick While all the online fashion portals are choosing their own favourite looks from the red carpet for the MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, I am appalled at one particular singers’ atrocious style sense coupled with her performance on stage that I made a conscious decision not to pick and preen over what celebrities from the other side of the globe are wearing but go closer to the Indian Fashion Week, Lakme Femina Fashion Week, and focus on designs from the East, for a change. Designs which again touch on details, in Ritu Kumar, it is the elegance of gold detailing and in designer Gaurang’s, it is more ABout the iconic, ageless Kiran Kher’s onstage oomph that carries off the outfit to perfection.

SEPTEMBER 2013

Miranda Kerr for Mango The Australian model has returned as the face of the Spanish brand for Fall-Winter 2013. Back for a second time, the 30-year-old Australian model was shot by Dutch photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin as the face of the latest collection by Spanish high-street giant Mango. The New York City skyline was used as a backdrop to the punky and oriental-influenced collection. Styling duties were carried out by Géraldine Saglio, while Lisa Butler took care of makeup, and famously non-conformist punk stylist Christiaan was in charge of hair. “The clothing is especially fun this season with a punk-inspired edge,” added Miranda, “I loved that Inez and Vinoodh kept the look of the campaign very raw and natural and I think it complements the collection very well. They did a fantastic job, as always!”

Chanel presents its latest campaign, shot by Karl Lagerfeld The luxury brand has released the first photograph from its Fall-Winter 2013-2014 campaign, shot by its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. The iconic designer must have taken off his famous sunglasses and picked up the camera, at least for long enough to photograph a campaign. The images shot by Karl Lagerfeld will provide a first look into the styles of Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2013-2014 collection. Three renowned international models posed for the camera in next season’s prêt-à-porter looks: Chiharu Okunugi (Japan), Ashleigh Good (UK) and Soo Joo Park (South Korea). The first photo reveals the tone of the new collection through some emblematic pieces. Two of the models are busy knitting, while the third locks eyes with the camera. The collection will be available from mid-September.

Keeping it real By Abigail Mathias

Few will forget BeyoncÉ Knowles choice of a crisp black and white jumpsuit to the 2013 Grammy awards, TURNing the gaze on the designer behind this simple statment piece - osman.

SPOTLIGHT / 43

Creating your own style is important.

While

most women choose to don highly embellished ball gowns on the red carpet, this carefully selected piece quickly grabbed worldwide attention. The designer of the jumpsuit, Osman Yousefzada soon found himself in the spotlight as well. The 38-year-old designer of Afghan origin was born and raised in the UK. But make no mistake, he is no stranger to fame. Osman’s designs have dotted the runways of London Fashion Week for the past six years. His work is inspired by the colours, fabric and heritage of ethnic cultures. His Autumn/ Winter collective is an extension of this theme. “This season’s collection is based on my personal fascination with the idea of displacement, as well as wanting to know where people are from

and where they are going. I have always been intensely curious about what they carry with them on their journeys.” His own journey is equally endearing. Osman’s career took shape when he was a young boy. “I grew up in a couture dress making business. My mother had her own workshop in our house and we had clients coming in all the time for measurements and related work. And as my mother’s business got busier, we, (the children) helped out.” From design errands to the cutting of fabric and eventually putting entire dresses together, Osman tried his hand at everything. This helped further nurture his craft. “The best training you can receive is to be able to create clothing for different sizes and meet different demands while trying to make them all happy customers.” The designer then studied at London’s Central Saint Martins college of art and design which he believes, “Provided an amazing foundation as it loosens one’s thinking, and pushes one’s ideas.”

SPOTLIGHT / 45

The best training you can receive is to create clothing for different sizes and meet demands while trying to keep happy customers. Star power “Creating your own style is important,” says the designer whose list of female clients include Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow and Queen Rania of Jordan. He explains, “The Osman brand is a dialogue with the Osman woman. She knows who she is. She is strong, individual, creative and is not afraid of making a statement, but is always effortless and never tries too hard.” A bold use of colour is clearly one of his strengths. As far as his fall collection goes, “The film Narnia, was the main influence for my collection this season. I love the play of dark and light. The sumptuous textures and chic snow queens have all provided inspiration.” Though there are no immediate plans of setting up a line in

Qatar, the designer is waiting for the right partner to come along. Osman is currently working on a collection that showcases his artistic talents as well. “We have just done our first line of sweatshirts which can be paired with more of our tailored pieces. These are my hand drawings. I think they are really special, and add an element of fun.”

Time for Change Glam reviews the Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection By DEBRINA ALIYAH

Material becomes the muse Lanvin

“Many black dresses, a whole lot of black dresses,” says Alber Elbaz, artistic director of Lanvin, of the AW 2013 collection. Colour gives way this season to the more prominent focus on fabrics, to create volumes and structures. The main fabric in the collection is a flighty silk crepe, a kind of inverted velvety texture that gives a contemporary feel to the pieces. The unique fabric manipulation has allowed for creation of pieces with volumes that looks as if it has been held together by invisible needles and pins, the fundamentals of the art of draping. The collection also sees heavy materials including stretch wool, silk, crumpled organza and duchess satin in regal silhouettes, all complemented by men-inspired coats that has been a main stay at Lanvin for a while now. The darkhued clothing collection is complemented with bright accessories to bring to life the brand’s theme for AW, ‘Hot & Cold.’ For the young and playful, there are boldly captioned necklace medallions and belt buckles with words like ‘Help’, ‘Cool’, ‘Hot’, and ‘Love’, along with accessories that are covered with diamante, and petal-coloured shoes. But just to cap off its eclecticism, get ready to see the fashion set wearing duchess satin sweaters covered in butterflies or photographs of beetles.

FOCUS / 49

An ode to the danseuse Nina Ricci

The collection revisits the outfits of a dancer who is getting ready to perform to an audience. The fluidity and functionality of the scenario is reinterpreted into pieces both for the dancer and guests attending the performance. Channeling a ballet performer, we see defined waists, clean bustier neckline, corsets, and flared coats and skirts to emulate the volume of a ballerina’s tutu. The more urban and casual ensembles represent the relaxed warm-up clothes of the dancer getting ready for a performance. The audiences’ wardrobe comes in form of fitted cocktail dresses, and opera coat-inspired parkas. The collection sees a black and white monochrome colour palette, dotted with pastel tones of rose. The silhouettes are brought to life with radzimir, felted wools, stretch tweeds, duchess satin, and quilted silk with layers of chiffon, pleats and feather embellishments.

FOCUS / 51

Sensuality revisited Atelier Versace

Old Hollywood gets yet another update in Atelier Versace’s couture AW 2013 collection. But make no mistake, Donatella Versace isn’t dealing with the mysterious and nonchalance of the era, but the downright bursting-atthe-seams sexy forms. “I love the exceptional glamour and allure of the black and white era of photographs and movies, with its light and shadow and the allure of being undressed,” she says of the collection. Provocative and sensually transparent evening dresses, crystal embroideries in jewel tones, hand-woven mink and cashmere cropped sweaters, silk tulle bustier and embroidered lace brassieres make the collection almost the perfect wardrobe for a Dangerous Liaison setting. The cherry to top it all off was that there were crystal hooks to just so delicately hold together the seams of the dresses. Provocative as this may sound it is truly the spirit of Versace that is well-embodied in this presentation.

A new interpretation of wool Bottega Veneta

“The collection is about proportion, precision, ease and the simple beauty of the material, says Tomas Maier, creative director. The material in question? Wool. Maier has undertaken the challenge to bring new light on wool, making us rethink the way we view the material, most often as boring and old. But the current trend obsession of working intensely on volume with unconventional fabrics is done wonderfully in this simple yet covetable collection. Bringing together various types of flannel and manipulating them for different texture and effect, the main fabric is then offset with leather, silk, satin and lacquered straw. With intricate construction and deliberate lines, the look is transformative and polished, exuding a kind of evening glamour even though the collection has limited choices of night pieces. Bags from the collection are smaller than previous seasons.

FOCUS / 53

Form gets elegant Carolina Herrera

As always, the all-American essence of Carolina Herrera with the pedigree high-society elegance comes through in her collection. Red, black and midnight blue form the main hues with swatches of delicate silk, velvet and leather as the fabric base. The standard straight silhouettes are complemented with contrasting volumes; coats and jackets combined with skirts and printed pants while dresses are close fitted for structure. The peplum, one of Herrera’s favourite shapes, gets another breathe of life, to highlight femininity of the pieces. The evening pieces play with sparkle and lace fabrics, and a stunning back-tiered maxi skirt, definitely a winner at GLAM.

Sculpted forms Gucci

An unlikely inspiration is found in British pop-artist Allen Jones who specialises in erotic sculptures, as Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini weaved the AW 2013 collection around the artist’s fetish aesthetics. The subversive undertone creates a “noir” atmosphere, as though viewing photographs in a highly saturated filter. But really, the silhouettes are demure and modest with elegant shapes outlined in signature Gucci fabrics. “The Gucci woman seduces with her dangerous femininity,” explains Frida. “She is steely yet sexy – defining her discipline with femme fatale vices. She wears sculpted dresses with pure graphics, all the while alluding to devious touches.” Caban style jackets with egg-shaped shoulders, pencil skirts with slits, delicate waistlines, leather inserts, biased cuts, and tapered pants are the main highlight pieces. The evening pieces are straight out combos of punk and couture, with delicate netting and satin vamped up with feathers, studding and sequins. The season also sees Gucci iconic bamboo handle bags in two new styles, anchored with archival luggage locks for a retro reference.

FOCUS / 55

A sporty Mania Michael Kors

Sporty and colourful, this collection is like an all-access pass to bring athleticism to the runway. With the sudden fitness craze and obsession for sculpted bodies, it is as if Michael Kors had designed specifically for this niche this season. It is a New York-centric collection, capturing the fitness-mania that is trending on the city’s radar. As Michael briefs the models backstage, “You are fast, athletic and chic. You race all over town from the Lower East Side to the Upper East Side. Be strong, powerful and sexy!” The city’s signature colours come into play, from the yellow of the cabs to the oranges of the workmen vests. The camouflage and the seasons-old houndstooth motif get a new take as inserts on coats and military-vests. But what we love is his take on the high-low skirt silhouette, something that we are definitely going to spend time in the gym perfecting our legs for.

56 \ fashion

Versatility rules Toujouri

It is a special season for Toujouri, as the label ventures into new territories launching glamour separates after collections past of focusing solely on dresses and kaftans. “I love the idea that the Toujouri customer can always find an occasion to wear our pieces whether it is day or night, smart or formal, so I introduced versatility in the design of this collection and flexibility in owning a ballgown or cocktail pieces and for this collection even separates and accessories. Toujouri is renowned for its use of delicate and intricate embroidery. This season we want this precious part of the garment to be transferrable and versatile with delicate beaded collars, fully embroidered ‘cage’ pieces that can be styled up or dressed down,” says Lama El- Moatassem, the label’s creative director. Evening pieces has been given a dramatic twist with tailoring in metallic jacquard, but the intricate embellishments and detailing makes even the rest of the collection prime candidates for evening glamour. The collection is inspired by visions of the enchanted forest, resulting in relaxed silhouettes, refined fabrics and embroidery material specially manufactured for the season.

Beauty with a Heart By DEBRINA ALIYAH

GET READY TO BE MESMERISED THIS FALL BY THE NEW FACE OF H&M – GISELE BUNDCHEN. THE BRAZILIAN BOMBSHELL CHATS WITH GLAM ON THE CAMPAIGN SHOT IN THE HEART OF LONDON.

gorgeous face and a passionate heart. Could there be any more that you can ask in a woman? Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has soared great heights in the world of fashion, breaking moulds and carving her own niche in a time when many thought the era of the supermodel was over. And at a tender age of 32, she is firmly placed in Forbes Rich List, having amassed an impressive bank account which she is putting to good use with the many charities that she is rallying efforts for. The Brazilian beauty from humble beginnings conquered the world of fashion becoming one of the favourite faces for the world’s top brands, and now is concentrating on conscientious work for the world. Having served as UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, and awarded Harvard’s Global Environmental Citizen, Gisele also founded The Luz Foundation, a grant-sourcing organisation that advocates and empowers young girls. This fall, the supermodel will be seen all over billboards and ads as the new face of H&M, in a campaign that was shot in the heart of London. The collection, a cross between military chic and grungy rocker, is a perfect fit for an off-duty model wardrobe. Gisele is renowned for stunning the world in immaculately cut couture gowns, but it is her ability to master the girl-next-door look that has truly won us all over. The campaign will also be released with a special song sung by Gisele to complement video commercials.

How was your experience recording a song for the commercial? I have always loved music, so I loved it! It was my first time singing and it was so much fun. I didn’t want to give up the mike. How did you choose the song? H&M picked the song and sent it to me and I loved it! What is the favorite piece from the campaign? I really loved the green blouse, the green pants, the blue short jacket, the coat, and the sweaters. Actually I liked everything I wore. What music do you like to listen to? I like to listen to Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marvin Gaye and also Brazilian music like Bossa Nova and other artist like Caetano, Elli Regina, Tom Jobim and Marisa Monte. It depends on what mood I am in. What is your key piece you like to wear in the fall? I am always a big fan of jeans because it is easy to match with everything, cozy sweaters and sweatshirts and I think are good options too. A nice light jacket is also good too. What is your favorite accessory for fall? I love scarves since I usually tend to feel a bit chilly. How do you decide what to wear? It depends of my mood, but definitely I always choose pieces that I feel comfortable in. Who within fashion inspires you? There is not a particular person, I feel people in general inspire me. It could be someone walking in the street or a picture in a book. What is always important to me is to feel comfortable with whatever it is I am wearing. Tell us about your charity work. I have a lot of different passions and one of them is mother earth. I believe we are all connected and that our health depends on the health of our planet. For the recognition of my involvement with environmental causes, in 2009, UNEP invited me to be a Good Will ambassador for environment. Since then I have been helping them to draw attention to this cause.

Bourjois:

Bringing life to fantasy By DEBRINA ALIYAH

The highly dramatic red blushes on the faces of theater performers from earlier days can now be found in a small ornate blusher pot, readily available to complement any modern girl’s make-up routine.

Bourjois' colour pots fly off the shelves, selling millions of pieces yearly and yet, not many knew about the brand's illustrious beginnings until the 150th anniversary campaign brought to light its glorious history. In the 19th century, theatre and ballet performances became a key influence in the art of make-up, promoting a fantasy-world where the performers take on a new life with painted faces. Bourjois was first incepted in the theatre district on the Grand Boulevards of Paris in 1863, where actor Joseph-Albert Ponsin began making make-up for his fellow performers in his own apartment. The first forms of these products were thick, waxy grease paint sticks in different colours, which he lovingly named after theater characters like Jaloux, Vieillard and Amoureux. Five years later, the brand finally came to life when Alexandre-Napoleon Bourjois took over and began expanding the range of products. The name Bourjois’ appeared in the new products, and carved itself a niche as make-up for theatre players.

But it was not long before the visionary Alexandre Bourjois began offering the products to the mass market. The title 'Theatre Supplier' that appeared on the little round pots of face powder was changed to 'Special Manufacturer of Feminine Beauty Products.' Unsurprisingly, the innovative Java Rice Powder, designed for lightening complexions was an instant hit, selling 2 million boxes annually, in a time where European women were desperately trying to maintain fair skins as a symbol of wealth and stature. The 1898 Bourjois catalogue featured over 700 items, including face powder, make-up, fragrances, perfume extracts for handkerchiefs and hair lotions. Today, Bourjois is a picture of a youthful persona with products that appeal to many for its affordability and versatility. It is also owned by the highly secretive Wertheimer family who also owns Chanel. The association has resulted in a powerful expansion and development of the Bourjois brand, and from a consumer sense, high-quality beauty offerings at great prices.

The Little Round Pots

An imaginary muse, Babette was chosen to represent the femininity and audacity of the Parisian woman. This was during the beginning of female emancipation during the Roaring Twenties.

In 1912, the famous Pastel Blushes were created. A mixture of powder and water was shaped and placed in round moulds, dried and then handpolished before being put into little round pots of printed cardboard.

Design is not a junkyard flea market brand. There is nothing kitsch about the accessories that they make, even though the materials may be considered scrap by many. And you will definitely not find them in a bazaar; instead, they sit in the trendiest showrooms in stylish cities such as Paris, Florence, Dubai and New York. Perhaps it is reflective of a new consciousness among the fashion set that has propelled the label into stardom. When the world’s resources are depleting, we ought to find new ways to feed creative souls. Childhood friends Tatiana Fayad and Joanne Hayek were toying with some old coins in 2007, turning them into jewellery pieces as a past time. Little did

they know that some five years later, the venture would have turned into a full-fledge accessory label with global success. “It all started as a hobby when we spontaneously created some jewellery and some apparel for ourselves and our friends. And of course, people were asking for it so we launched a proper line of jewellery made using ancient Lebanese coins,” Tatiana said. It is a rare occasion to see a label founded in this region with such regard for the environment using the concept of recycling old materials. But the duo has since given the brand a very structured and grounded vision of what they want to design and achieve. Using discarded materials like old keys, magnifying glasses, and CDs, the girls cleverly incorporated the recycled items into their designs. The pieces are so well-made that you would never guess that it was made out of shredded pieces of CDs, if you weren’t told. “By

“We learn a lot from the people we work with, and we love to research about new techniques and handcrafts.” wearing a jewel, a woman carries with her a story, a message, something personal. Creating statement pieces by up-cycling unused or obsolete materials is a conscious way for us to promote an idea and a philosophy,” she explained. In one of the new capsule collections created using old metal keys, the girls explore a social story of freedom and self-expression. “Unlocked is a series of jewelry pieces made by useless keys. The message behind this collection is to ‘keep doors open’, in an environment that suffers from a lack of open-sourcing and transparency.” It is evident that Vanina Designs go beyond scratching the surface of just another fashion brand, this is a label that encompasses strong beliefs. “We design four new jewelry lines as well as various series of fashion accessories pieces, each carrying its own conceptual approach and message. We aim to promote community development through the valorisation of local craftsmanship and industry and try to work with local materials,” Tatiana said. Ecological footprints of production throughout all stages of the supply chain are kept to the minimum,

something that duo achieve by working closely with local communities. All the pieces are still produced in their own workshops in Beirut, where different artisans of different specialties come together. “We learn a lot from the people we work with, and we love to research about new techniques and handcrafts. Every day is a new adventure for us, as Lebanon has a lot to offer in terms of resources, and we try to promote it in our creations as much as possible.” Each season, Vanina Design presents about 200 different references and has expanded its wings into making bags, shoes, clothes and hats. The statement pieces are all offered only in limited numbers, an ode to the concept of sustainability that the brand stands for. And while the pieces resound with more developed markets, it is a stark difference from the ‘more is more’ culture that prevails in the Middle East. “This is exactly what we want to achieve, by creating a new mindset. We want to create exclusive and unique statement pieces that are sustainable and accessible, and yet have the extravagant style that people in this region look for.”

More than

what

meets the eye By Abigail Mathias

Lama Hourani has a smile that lit up the cafĂŠ we were meeting in. The 35-year-old Jordanian jewellery designer has been in the business for over a decade and her clientele includes royalty such as Queen Sophia of Spain, Queen Noor and Rania of Jordan and celebrities such as Rene Zellweger and the Olsen twins.

“The

Queen of Jordan is a huge trendsetter. Everyone looks at her as an icon. She has worn a lot of my jewellery and given it as gifts. We have collaborated on a lot of projects as well. For me, the clients that discovered my jewellery 13 years ago and are still faithful to the brand are as precious. This means the world to me. It is so difficult to keep a client intrigued. It gives me the motivation when I have those times of doubt,” says Lama. For Lama, her work is more than just designing but giving back to the society and leaving a legacy too. “As a woman I believe that women in the Arab world and the world in general have to stand up and support each other. We are the future because we have been passive for so long. I give this advice to all women including my sisters who are sometimes sensitive about competitors. Our mission in this world as women is to leave a legacy. I try to do that with lectures in schools and try to help as many women in my capacity. When women do that proactively our economy will flourish. Our children will benefit. We live in an interesting time and women have to try to make a difference,” she says. Lama has come to Qatar with a goal in mind, though she has yet to achieve it. “I intend to be a part of a multi-brand store. Being exposed to many cultures, I first try to understand the mind-set before launching anything. I have a lot of clients from Qatar including those who buy art from our gallery in Amman.” But all this passion originated from a strong background in arts. “I and come from an artistic family and I studied art. My mother started the first art gallery in Jordan and was a big part of the cultural scene. Growing up around art and artists gave me a lot of creative freedom and that helped propel my own passion for the arts. I’ve always experimented with jewellery so when I was in my final year at the university, I explored this aspect. As a child I used to drag my mother, (who was not into fine jewellery), to jewellery stores and just admire the collections there. Looking back it is easy to connect the dots.” Her strong interest in art is probably the reason that her work is described as wearable art. Her pieces have found pride of place in museums and galleries across the world. The pieces are all handmade and assembled in Amman. Lama recently unveiled her Spring Summer 2013 collection, the first of which, the Kingdom of Earth was

inspired by a trip to Peru. The Paper Flower collection was inspired by bougainvillea flowers whose colours are represented with various semi-precious stones. “Behind each piece is a story that extends from the very start of the inspiration process where there is a spot in the world that triggered that particular design. My mood board often consists of various photographs that were captured during visits around the world. The creative process begins with sketching components of master pieces and limited editions bringing bits and pieces of my most loved moments into my jewellery. These are then given to our very talented artisans who bring the designs to life with extra attention to detail. After the components are ready they are taken to the assembly section where they are fused with handpicked semiprecious stones according to the colour palette chosen for that collection. The assembled pieces enter the last phase of production which is quality control and voila, the master piece is created,” explains the designer. The price of her pieces range from QR182 to QR3,640. “Because they are hand made, smaller pieces are cheaper and the more intricate ones are more expensive,” she adds.

Leaving an impact A big part of Lama’s personal mission is to empower the less fortunate. “I do a lot of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) work by empowering women and the differently-abled. I also train women who work from home to help make them independent financially. It’s a big passion of mine,” she says. “At first I was unaware of the value of this aspect of my work, but it soon became an important part of my business. I also train people with disabilities. I find their productivity and finesse of their work excellent,” explains the designer.

Having carved a niche, Lama sometimes gets requests by corporate clients who want unique gifting items. “The luxury segment is vital despite the fact that the world is suffering financially. This segment is always growing. A client once told me ‘I have a Lama Hourani jewellery shrine in my room,’ which is the best compliment. These clients become ambassadors of the brand. Her mother was my client and she has soon became one too.” “My clients are well-traveled and like to stand out. They don’t follow fashion as much as set a trend and they are culturally curious, which is the most important aspect for me. I carry my identity on my shoulders all the time and it’s nice to feel that mutual passion with clients.” is hard to ignore the unique pieces of silver jewellery that Lama is wearing – a clear indication of her love for the metal. “I am focused on silver because it is closely related to our heritage. It has been a part of the Arab world for centuries and used to represent the social status in the past. Silver is the new gold. Gold has become so expensive that all brands without exception are doing a silver line now. To me, silver is my canvas. It is pure, neutral and it’s the easiest material to work with. You can gold plate it or set it with diamonds so it is a metal that is durable and beautiful. I love how it changes colour with diamond. As a metal it is neutral and you can mix it with everything.” “I was recently in Myanmar at the World Economic Forum and a man walked up to me and asked if he could buy the necklace I was wearing for his wife. This also happened in Doha during a TV interview,” she chuckles. “In general I am very proud of all of the pieces as they are made from scratch. I don’t buy components from somewhere and merge them. My jewellery is influenced by a photograph or an architectural detail. Something flambouyant gives you inspiration. Our historical relics give us identity. Contemporary heritage makes culture cool. Instead of brands, you can wear your identity on your neck and be proud of it. That’s way more important for me than something you pay an arm and a leg for but you have thousands of people wearing the same thing.”

It

Despite an exhausting amount of travel, Lama still has a deep impact on the quality of her designs. “Some of my team members have been with me from the beginning. They understand me well. My sketch is identical to the final piece that comes out. However managing people is not easy. You need a lot of therapy,” she laughs. “It’s interesting that a Jordanian brand has been accepted around the world and that celebrities are appreciating it. That is part of the dedication. All of that traveling pays off in the end.” “One of my competitors copied a line that I made and it was mass produced all over Jordan and the Arab world. At the time I did not take it as a compliment but looking back I can appreciate being a trendsetter. I had decided to beat that piece by studying further.” Future projects “I’m working on a line called the ‘China Dream.’ It has words such as ‘courage,’ ‘love’ and ‘dreams.’ Since the characters can be reinterpreted in many ways, one has to be careful,” says Lama, who is learning Mandarin. “I’m the one having the most fun. My clients get the

Its interesting that a Jordanian brand has been accepted around the world and that celebrities are appreciating it. That is part of the dedication. summary of everything I’ve learned.” For Lama, her life and her work is all for a reason. “I see my story as a small one, in a sea of big sharks. I meet young girls who tell me they admire my work and my story. I try to be a good role model as much as possible. My work provides an opportunity to represent a lot of women in the Arab world and be an ambassador to negate stereotypes. There’s a responsibility that comes with this. There’s a humane aspect to creative design which unites us as human beings. Jewellery opens doors without needing an introduction.”

The Lama Hourani Collections: Kingdom of Earth Collection This collection is inspired by one of the richest and most mysterious nations in history: the Inca Empire, located in Cusco in modern day Peru. A civilization that was devoted to the sun, this collection features symbols that signify the three worlds of the Inca belief system. For the collection Lama reinvented mystical symbols in handmade sterling silver and fused them with vibrant and colourful elements to reflect the palette of Peru’s landscapes, archaeology and costumes. The Paper Flower Collection Inspired by the Majnooneh flower, or Bougainvillea or the Paper Flower thanks to its paper-thin aesthetic, the deep rooted flower represents defiance, beauty, confidence and endurance. Together with sterling silver and different shades of gold plating and oxidation, she depicts the wild and beautiful aspects of the flower. Contemporary Nostalgia Collection This collection is fused with deep coloured semi-precious stones.

Talent Abound Lama has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, two diplomas in jewellery design and gemology from the American Institute of Gemmology, in addition to a master’s degree in product design from Italy. She was recently honoured as a global leader for 2012 by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for her contribution to society.

British cuisine right here in Doha

Camel cottage pie and Eton Mess – two traditional British dishes with an Arabic twist will now be available at the MIA cafť. These culinary treats have been created for the Cafť by Romain Meder, Executive Chef of MIA Restaurants. Meder said, “We wanted to ensure we capture the essence of traditional British food, being able to add an Arabic twist to the dishes. By using the finest locally sourced ingredients we have created the Camel cottage pie and Eton Mess, representing Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture from a culinary angle.” If museum goers are in for a sweet treat, the traditional English dessert ‘Eton Mess’, named after Eton College in Windsor, is a great choice. The dessert consists of a mixture, or

mess, of fresh strawberries, meringue and cream, flavored with thinly sliced local fresh mint. Commenting on the newly added delicacies, Aisha Ghanem Al Attiya, Qatar UK 2013, said, “Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture has so far offered a wide range of events and activities highlighting the relationship between Qatar and the UK mostly through artistic and educational exchange. What we wanted to do with this menu is let people in Qatar experience the cultural relationship through a shared passion. By taking traditional British recipes and enhancing them with local ingredients, we are bringing the spirit of the Year of Culture to the table.”

By the light of

the moon Doha is not short of places to dine in. But there’s always a buzz when there’s a new place in town. W Hotel’s La Spiga by Paper Moon offers Italian cuisine. If you find the name mysterious, you are not alone. The restaurant is expected to open its doors to the public in September. Paper Moon, an innovative concept created by Pio Galligani Magrini, Italy, brings to Doha La Spiga by Paper Moon to act as the third culinary destination at W Doha. The restuarant is open between 12 pm-4 pm and 6 pm to midnight. The inspiration behind the launch was

to transport the authentic details of Paper Moon, a family run Italian restaurant that first opened in Via Bagutta, Milan, to the setting of W Doha. Also found in New York and Istanbul, Paper Moon has collected many devotees along the way, who return time after time to take in its heady, yet relaxed ambience. Executive Chef Alessio Dussi and his skilled team have created a menu that will feature a range of epicurean offerings to evoke memories of la dolce vita, served with style and extraordinary service.
