&

BRICKBATS supermodel success It was great to have Naomi Campbell featured as the GLAM Supermodel last month. She not only proved that beauty sees beyond colour but also paved the way for other models to make it big in the fashion world. Her life has been mired with controversies, but that didn’t falter this fiery woman to be honoured at the recent British Fashion Awards. Way to go girl! Sana Rashid

Feeling orange! I was always sceptical when it came to wearing orange, but now that GLAM shows the colour to be the latest trend of 2011, I am reconsidering it. Maybe next time, show something in yellow as this is another colour which has escaped my wardrobe. ‘Back to basics’ was yet another interesting spread of items which every girl must posses! Celina Fitcher

GLAM turns three Firstly, a heart congratulation to GLAM on turning 3! I have been an avid reader of your magazine and just love the way you capture the latest trends in fashion and style. The whole look of the magazine is glamorous, and reading it makes me feel GLAM! Moreover, the anniversary party was simply great and I will surely be there for the next one too! Tamara Jones

Beauty in your booty I love applying make-up and GLAM’s ‘beauty booty’ pages are always a treat to read and give me an idea of the next hot thing in the market. In the January issue, I was pretty surprised to find what the GLAM office had to offer. For the next issue, maybe you could include what other readers own too. I will be more than happy to write in. Maha Hafiz

Shop and Travel If you are a shopaholic who loves to travel, then the piece written by Sonali Raman in GLAM is just what you need to read. I have religiously followed up from the first part in Paris, to the second one in London. She has beautifully captured the street-style shopping of this hip and happening city. Razia Sultan

Glam appeal GLAM stands for what it is; a glamorous magazine that is filled with style, fashion and latest trends. Every issue is a treat to the eyes, especially for fashion conscious women like me. I like the way the magazine is in sync with the latest offerings in the market, and thus it keeps a shopaholic like me updated every month! Sandra James

Be the perfect

Valentine... By cassey oliveira

February 14 is one day that makes you want to look extra special for that ‘special’ someone. GLAM presents a few handy tips to add a zing in your day of romance...

Tress up!

What to wear? This question makes everyone shudder. Since its Valentine’s and the mood is for ‘Red’, we suggest you go with the flow. But select the right shade that suits your complexion. If you are petite, a little red dress will help; or if you are pear-shaped try out empire waist dresses. And if you think you may not fit in either, team an elegant red shirt with black trousers to flaunt the curves. Add a little ruffle, to play flirty. GLAM reminds: You will look your best if you are comfortable in what you wear. Don’t try out something too raunchy, you will attract attention you don’t care for!

16

A great hair-do ups the oomph quotient. So invest in a hairstyle that will work the magic. Poker straight hair is passe. Try out mischievous curls that fall over your shoulders. If you don’t want hair to be flying over your face, tie it up in style. A relaxed side pony is flattering or maybe a glamorous pouf that makes the pony look even sexier! GLAM reminds: Don’t be hesitant to try out something new; opt for jazzy colours for your hair. Think electric blue!

GLAM

valentine

The shoe-effect No heels is no fun! They not only help you with ‘height issues’, but also add a grace to your walk. Pick up a fancy pair of five-inch stilettos or platform sandals to stand tall and proud! GLAM reminds: You don’t have to be red from head-to-toe. A beautiful pair of silver or any subtle shade of shoes is good enough!

Looking pretty Highlight the best features of your face. A smooth eye-shadow will draw attention to your eyes. Add volume to your lashes with mascara. With every flutter, he’s sure to drown into your eyes! For lipstick, the shade depends on your skin tone, but red is great for the day. But don’t forget the gloss that will give you a seductive pout! Hide away unattractive blemishes or dark circles with a concealer. GLAM reminds: Don’t paint your face! Apply the right amount of makeup that accentuates your looks.

Play with accessories If you find your outfit too monochromatic, add a splash of colour with a fancy belt or scarf. Beautiful pendants will add class to a low neckline; otherwise a chic pair of long earrings is great. And for the ring, we are hoping he gives you one! GLAM reminds: A no-jewellery look is not a bad option if your make-up and outfit compensates for the absence!

Other tips to remember... * Fragrance Spray a nice sensual fragrance before you reach your date-spot. * Nail appeal Your man is bound to hold your hand. Having a manicure done before your date will add to your elegance. * Be yourself! Though you may not appear your usual self with all that make-up and clothes; it’s the inner you which attracted him. Don’t pretend to be someone else!

A play on fabrics is apparent, from sheer corset sets decorated with tiny velvet hearts to lacy pieces or other styles featuring chiffon frills and silky cotton; always subtle with touches of vintage styling. She exudes confidence and sophistication from the inside out.”

In Theory NET-A-PORTER.COM, the world’s premier online luxury fashion retailer, is delighted to announce the launch of Theyskens Theory. Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens, has joined forces with New York-based label Theory, infusing his ubiquitous cool into this highly anticipated collection. Theyskens has created a line of conceptual tailoring cut from luxurious fabrics, bringing an approach to fashion that is more versatile while in keeping with the brand’s core values. For spring 11 the collection captures many different moods, from a graphic minimal palette to artistic brush stroke prints to fluid silks and denim all while tempering the androgyny of its tailoring, jeans and separates with the feminine touch of blouses and dresses.

Fashion & Flowers Mulberrys’ Spring Summer 2011 campaign is a concoction of playful proportions, floral surroundings and red bewigged models lounging decadently around a sumptuously decorated room. The collection is inspired by the timeless novel The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which gave life to the idea behind the shoot. The campaign was shot by eminent British photographer Tim Walker, an expert in creating unusual, whimsical scenes that bring a fairytale reality to still pictures. His flair for manipulating scale, styling and scenery has created rich and ethereal images which perfectly define and celebrate the spirit of Mulberrys’ new season. 22

Opposites Attract This season’s Versace collection for women is all about a playful game of proportions and opposites: short vs. long, high vs. low, plain vs. patterned, dull vs. bright, and fabric vs. flesh. The basis of many of the prints is the Versace Greek fret motif, which is here used not as a logo device, but as a decorative pattern. The free and easy use of this graphic, usually so rigid and geometric in its application, adds a sense of fluidity to the prints, with their playful use of colours. The accessories follow the same theme of opposites with purses and bags (sizes are small to medium) created from contrasting materials. The inlays and decorations are bright where the main material is dull, or dull where it is bright.

Valentine’s Day the City Lifestyle way

As that romantic day fast approaches, it’s time to stock up on gifts for your loved ones and start the beautifying process. City Lifestyle is the one-stop shop with its fabulous array of products set to send hearts racing. Highlights include cutesy jewelled picture frames, pretty little trinket boxes and a range of fabulous makeup cases. Valentines’ day doesn’t have to just be about gifts for others, spoil yourself and avail of these gorgeous offerings too.

A Big Bang

Provocative and complex, confident, seductive and charismatic, youthful and captivating with infinite possibility; these are the words used to describe the new Marc Jacobs fragrance BANG. Jacobs takes this self-expression a step further by appearing for the first time in an advertising campaign for one of his products. The fragrance starts off with a burst of its signature black, pink and white peppercorns, with a heart and base of woods and undertones of white moss and patchouli. Peppery, woody, spicy and full of power the scent is irresistible and coupled with its daring bottle design of smoky black heavyweight faceted glass contrasted with high shine silver metallic plaques, BANG is definitely set to take off with a huge explosion.

On The Wedge This spring, H&M is proud to be working with the cult shoe label Swedish Hasbeens, to bring its wooden-soled style to the rest of the world. For H&M, Swedish Hasbeens have created three wooden-soled styles which will become wardrobe essentials this spring. There’s the strappy wedge, with three buckle straps at the ankle and a progression of straps going over the foot, all sitting on a wooden wedge to give the gladiator look an unexpected twist. Then there’s the heeled summer sandal with one ankle strap, which comes in cream and red on a pale wooden base. And finally there’s a peep-toe slip-in wedge on a wooden sole, with snake-effect leather which is laced on top. Swedish Hasbeens are a perfect example of how fashion and fun can also be naturally sustainable.

Hair We wanted something uber glam and very classical to complement the beautiful dresses used during the shoot. The updo creation by hair whizz Salah Ali from Mohammed Al-Sagheer Ladies Salon at Sharq Village & Spa, worked just the treat and suited the theme to a tee. Thanks for your great work Salah and to all the professionals at Sharq Village & Spa. Makeup Two different makeup looks were utilised for the shoot; the first was more dramatic featuring smoky purple eyes and vibrant lips; the second was more subtle with natural hues of beige and pink for the eyes teamed with glossy lips; both looks were easily achievable with the use of Art Deco makeup and help from Heba Mahmoud Darwish, makeup artist from Karisma Cosmetics. Thanks Karisma. Special thanks to photographer Abdulla AlSuwaidi, Rebecca Parker, the Grand Hyatt Hotel, and all the team for their support. Gemma Rogers

38

GLAM

G

emma Rogers an Interior Designer in her mid twenties, moved to Doha from Scotland, a year ago. She currently works at KPS, a design and build company specializing in corporate interiors. Gemma Rogers wishes she has studied Fashion rather than interiors - so she could design shoes and handbags! She has done a Millinery course back in the UK and one day plans to travel and work in the Far East and then move onto Melbourne, Australia and hopefully design fabulous hats for the women who attend the Gold Cup! HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE SENSE? As a designer myself I have always tried to keep up to date with the latest trends throughout the design industry. Designing, albeit interiors, for the past 8 years, I have spent many a night browsing blogs, magazines, web, etc. I soon knew what was attractive to my eye, what I could potentially grow to love and what I distinctly didn’t appreciate. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? My style depends greatly on what is sympathetic to my shape and colouring. I know that I suit strong, bold, and often masculine shapes and colours, just like I know to avoid frills, flowers, lace and pastel colours. WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE TO WEAR? CASUAL OR DRESS UP? Coming from Scotland where the weather is less desirable than Qatar, I have to say I prefer to dress casual. Comfort and warmth are essential when living and working in a fast pace city like Glasgow..... stilettos and paving slabs don’t always mix well! I wouldn’t say moving to Qatar has had a massive impact on my sense of style, although I definitely enjoy getting glammed up for a night out knowing that my effort isn’t going to be ruined the minute I step out of the front door. WHICH DESIGNER IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY? Growing up in the UK I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the works of many talented fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood,

Stella McCartney, John Richmond and Paul Smith. When it comes to fashion, the Brits can’t be too far behind the Italians! My personal favourite was the very creative and very controversial Alexander McQueen – a man who took the soft, sensual, emotional female form and addressed it with structured, high energy, provocative pieces creating powerful, dynamic, dramatic and often shocking styles. His drive to be different and his achievements in such short life is inspiration to myself as a designer. WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON - WHO ARE YOU INSPIRED BY? Fortunately, Victoria Beckhams’ fashion line is a lot more attractive than her personality. I like her classic almost Chanel look which she creates through simple yet structured dresses often in monochrome tones. She manages feminine yet powerful, the key for every modern day career woman. WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR WARDROBE THAT ADDS TO YOUR STYLE QUOTIENT? I think my friends would say accessories.......... I accessorise everything! Especially my vast handbag collection, I never use the same bag two days in a row. Whether it is costume jewellery, handbags, hair decoration, belts or scarves, you will always find me adding that little bit extra to an outfit. WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE CITIES TO SHOP IN? I love shopping in New York, for the obvious reasons, it’s all very Sex in The City! I love shopping in Barcelona for the hidden gems of handmade leather boots, quirky jewellery and haute couture. But most of all, I love shopping at home. Glasgow is ranked the second best shopping destination in the UK and offers a massive range of fashion for all budgets. When I visit home I always take time to visit my favourite shops and stock up on the seasons’ trends. THE ONE THING THAT YOU CANNOT STEP OUT WITH OUT? A big pair of sunnies! Living in Qatar sunglasses are a must, especially for driving, but they are also great to disguise many a sin from the night before!

meets

THE ONE THING THAT YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND WHILE DRESSING UP? Less is more! Many females feel the need to go over the top to make an impression on a night out, short dresses, low cut tops, diamantes galore. When I plan for a night out I try to keep my outfit simple and classic and then accessorize accordingly. I will always try to contrast colours of an outfit too. If I plan on wearing a black dress I will opt for a brightly coloured shoe or handbag, HOW WOULD YOU DRESS UP A PAIR OF JEANS? Always with stilettos! I often wear skinny jeans with a sparkly top and stilettos on a night out. You don’t need to be in an LBD to look glam these days. A FASHION FAUX PAS FOR YOU WOULD BE? SOMETHING YOU SEE ALL AROUND YOU? VPL! (Visible panty line) Being a comfort girl I understand why this ‘faux pas’ happens in abundance. However I also know that so many companies have invested time and money into defeating it... give it a try ladies. WHAT FASHION TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE WOMEN IN DOHA? To all the beautiful women in Doha........ Be yourself! Don’t be influenced by others, be unique, dress to suit your personality and your shape, and remember what suits your friend isn’t necessarily going to suit you. And enjoy fashion! You can have a lot of fun with colour, pattern, shape and even size. Be creative. YOUR TAKE ON VALENTINE’S DAY? I am sure if I was in a relationship I would get all mushy and want to do something special on Valentine’s Day this year... but reality check. I think Valentine’s Day has been exploited by marketing departments and has become hugely commercialised with many people having overinflated expectations. I would like to think that if I were sharing my life with ‘that someone special’, there wouldn’t need to be a reason for grand romantic gestures, I would much rather spoil one another throughout the year with cheeky little spontaneous surprises.

Jessica

Stefanie Kafka

J

essica Stefanie Kafka has been living in Doha, working in fashion for over 3 years now. Of German origin, in her mid thirties, she grew up in different parts of Asia and worked for over 10 years in the fashion industry in Paris and London. She worked at Lanvin, at Christy Turlington for Puma and Hugo Boss. She is currently taking a sabbatical to concentrate on making a family. This classy lady has a tiny baby bump, making it impossible to tell that she is almost 8 months pregnant with her second child. She still manages to exude style and sophistication and one can hardly tell she’s pregnant! HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE SENSE? Some of it is intuitive, what I have in me, and my international upbringing exposed me to many different designers and I was able to pick and choose and put things together. Because of

40

this innate sense of fashion in me, I ended up working in the industry. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Sober, focused on details, classic-contemporary, but not a trend follower. WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE TO WEAR? CASUAL OR DRESS-UP? Casual-chic is more my style. WHICH DESIGNER IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY? Diane Von Furstenberg; she has a very wearable approach to fashion, her style is very distinctive and I like her colour schemes. She is most accessible for every-day wearability. I like Balenciaga for the more dressy outfits, Vanessa Bruno and Isabel Marant. WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON WHOM YOU

GLAM

ARE INSPIRED BY? A CELEBRITY OR A FAMILY MEMBER... Coco Chanel, Grace Kelly, Queen Rania of Jordan whom I admire, Lauren Hutton – I like her style, Jackie Kennedy. Carole Bouquet (the model who also dated French actor Gerard Depardieu) who was the face of Chanel at one point, inspired me immensely. There were also people I met at work who taught me how to combine things, especially at Lanvin, I was surrounded by quite some fashionably eccentric people.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR WARDROBE THAT ADDS TO YOUR STYLE QUOTIENT? My DVF dresses – they are original for their prints and very comfortable. I can dress it up or down. I have some Lanvin clothes from my workdays there, which are now considered vintage classics – a sleeveless sheath dress in a vintage tone of ciel blue is special. I love my suede royal blue pencil skirt from Givenchy. Another brand, which I like, is Max Mara – more sober, monochrome tones. A special one is a cream ‘Jackie O’ style dress with a black print. A favourite item of clothing, which is typically ‘me’ is a plain, simple white Lanvin shirt with gathers details at the shoulder and armhole. I also love the French brand ‘Comptoir des Cotoniers for what they do: I have a simple skirt in natural linen, which has a silver coating on the fabric making it quirky. A Vanessa Bruno bag was a new buy from Paris, another favourite and I live with my black Tod’s tote (a gift from my husband)! Special shoes in my closet include a silver strappy pair of Louboutin’s, which I wore for my wedding, and a black & white pair of Manolo Blahniks. I love my Tod’s ballerina flats for everyday. I also have quite a collection of French accessory brand Metal Pointu that I like very much. A particular favourite is a multi-strand necklace made up of silver beads. WHICH

CITIES TO SHOP IN? In Paris I like the Madeleine area for more commercial things and Le Marais for the little special boutiques. Cape Town is fabulous for shopping as the designers use a lot of local craft. I would love to go to India for shopping.... THE ONE THING THAT YOU CANNOT STEP OUT WITH OUT? Mascara and a bit of make-up. THE ONE THING THAT YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND WHILE DRESSING UP? It’s important to be colour co-coordinated even when I am casually dressed. I like to look elegant and well groomed all the time. I make an effort. A MUST-HAVE FASHION ITEM FOR 2011ON YOUR WISH LIST? A bag from Balenciaga or Tod’s.

HOW WOULD YOU DRESS UP A PAIR OF JEANS? I would keep it simple: A simple white shirt with some detailing on it A dark blazer (tweed if I were in Europe) A significant necklace Shoes matching the colour of the jacket. All-in-all- sober and not too much bling. A FASHION FAUX PAS FOR YOU WOULD BE? SOMETHING YOU SEE ALL AROUND YOU? White socks with business shoes (men). Wearing track suits even when you are not going to the gym or lounging about at home. WHAT FASHION TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE WOMEN IN DOHA? ESPECIALLY FOR PREGNANT WOMEN – ON HOW TO LOOK AS STYLISH AND SOPHISTICATED AS YOU DO? It’s important to have nice feet and nails, especially when you wear open shoes. Concentrate on one pattern in an outfit – focus on one thing and make it stand out. I believe ‘less is more’. People try to identify themselves with a brand, but try to adapt the brand to suit your personality. For pregnant women, rather than buying maternity wear you can buy fashionable and trendy clothes from high street stores like Zara; buy them a size bigger so they are loose and much more flattering. YOUR TAKE ON VALENTINE’S DAY I would like to quote Bill Blass here: “When in doubt, wear red.”

IF YOU WERE SELECTED TO WALK THE RUNWAY IN SAY MILAN OR PARIS FASHION WEEK – WHICH DESIGNER WOULD YOU CHOOSE? Valentino for its traditional elegance with a modern interpretation. IF YOU WERE BORN IN HOLLYWOOD - WHOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE BORN AS? Grace Kelly.

ejla Niksic Delic, a graphic design graduate from VCUQ, is currently working in an architectural firm, and has been living in Doha for 9 years. Of Bosnian origin, in her mid twenties, she has worked as a graphic designer on a fashion related design project earlier, does some modelling for shows in Doha as well. Delic who has the height and figure of a model, has an avant-garde contemporary European sense of fashion that comes through now and then mixed with a touch of local flavour. This confident young lady is always very smartly turned out. HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE SENSE? I have had transitions in my style sense from when I was living with my parents, to being a student, to working and being married. The place of my education (VCUQ) and work had a huge influence on me. The cultural exposure I have had from living here has also added to it. I would say my style sense really developed from when I was 22 years old. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? It’s Retro mixed with Contemporary. I like small details like appliqués, layers, colours, mixing different styles. I do stick with the look that is appropriate for the season but incorporate something of my own into it. WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE TO WEAR? CASUAL OR DRESS-UP? I like being “dressed-up” – not formal or for business! I like clothes that are almost ‘costume-y’. Of course I feel most comfortable in jeans and tees... WHICH DESIGNER IS YOUR FAVOURITE

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE SENSE? I’ve always kept updated by reading fashion magazines watching Fashion TV and seen what’s new in the stores. I’m always aware of what other people are wearing when I’m out and about taking lots of pictures. This helps me to assimilate all of these influences into my own style. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I try to create a unique style; I do like classic clothing but give it an Arabian twist through accessories and scarves. Ultimately, I like to feel comfortable but I want my clothes and accessories to make me feel confident and say something about who I am.

WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE TO WEAR? CASUAL OR DRESS-UP? Both, depending on the occasion. I like to dress casually just because you can mix and match different garments to create your own sense of comfort, as well as style. But there are also a number of occasions where I like to dress up and indulge myself in my favourite designers. WHICH DESIGNER IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY? Gianfranco Ferre is my ultimate favourite designer because of the way he plays with different textures and fabrics. The simplicity of his designs really complements a women’s figure at the same time. His chic collections never fail to impress me. Furthermore, there are many inspiring designers out there that are also some of my favourites, such as Alexander Wang, Diane Von Furstenberg, Valentino, and many more. WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON -- WHO ARE YOU INSPIRED BY? My mom. That’s where I got my passion from, right there in her closet.

A FASHION FAUX PAS FOR YOU WOULD BE? SOMETHING YOU SEE ALL AROUND YOU? I think one of the worst things I see is when women wear leggings with a short top. Leggings require a top that comes part way down the thigh to look right and balance the proportions of the outfit.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR WARDROBE THAT ADDS TO YOUR STYLE QUOTIENT? I like to top off simple outfits with the addition of appropriate accessories such as scarves, jewellery, an interesting bag and a great pair of shoes. WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE CITIES TO SHOP IN? Certainly London and Paris are great fashion cities and have wonderful to shop. However, with the Pearl and newer shops opening in Doha, it’s also easy to find great fashion locally. THE ONE THING THAT YOU CANNOT STEP OUT WITH OUT? My vintage Cartier Santos watch. This is very precious to me, because it’s a gift passed through my family and is a timeless design. Without it, I simply feel incomplete. THE ONE THING THAT YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND WHILE DRESSING UP? To never over think it, go with your instincts and keep it simple and elegant. A MUST-HAVE FASHION ITEM FOR 2011? ON YOUR WISH LIST? Celine classic box bag. HOW WOULD YOU DRESS UP A PAIR OF JEANS?

WHAT FASHION TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE WOMEN IN DOHA? Less is more; go for a trendy bag and simple ballerinas. YOUR TAKE ON VALENTINE’S DAY? Unfortunately, I do not believe in Valentine’s Day nor do I celebrate it. FLIGHT OF FANCY IF YOU WERE SELECTED TO WALK THE RUNWAY IN SAY MILAN OR PARIS’ FASHION WEEK - WHICH DESIGNER WOULD YOU CHOOSE? Chanel, because he has the most outstanding runway shows! eing particularly feminine, the era of masculine dressing with all those boyfriend blazers and boyfriend jeans was not a particularly fun time in fashion for me. So imagine my glee when Fall/Winter 2010 saw a fashion affair with Mad Men style dressing 50s and ‘60s inspired flouncy A-line skirts, floral print tea dresses, pussy bow tie blouses and structured ladylike bags were everywhere. Everyone was so obsessed with the clothes worn in the hit US series Mad

things, this was not a one-off trend ó ladylike fashion has not only come back, but is here to stay! Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta and Victoria Beckham’s collections for Spring/Summer 2011 were full of the cinched waists, flirty A-lines and figure hugging pencil skirts you would expect to find in the closets of Mad Men’s Joan, Betty and Peggy. But how is ladylike fashion different this time around? While the ‘50s and ‘60s inspired ladylike structure and tailoring is pretty much the same as it was last season, forget the dark colours, tweed and heavy knits. This season it is all about softer textures, pastel colours, brights and virginal whites.

Mad Men Style

Joan Costume designer Janie Bryant modelled Joan on Old Hollywood sex bombs like Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield. Joan’s hourglass figure and strong character is accentuated and reflected in her nipped-in shift dresses, blouses with ruched detailing and pencil skirts with long hemlines, all in deep jewel colours. Betty Modelled on Grace Kelly, Betty’s style is a mixture of ‘50s and ‘60s housewife and equestrian style. Think floral print tea dresses with flouncy A-line skirting for her role as perfect housewife and then Hermesstyle silk scarves, pearls, cashmere jumpers and tapered trousers for a glamorous look while on horseback. Peggy Peter Pan collars, pussy bow ties, twinsets and lots of plaid are all staples in Peggy’s wardrobe. Many people wrongly assume that Peggy is the Plain Jane of the show, but according to Janie Bryant, the use of print reflects Peggy’s multi-layered and evolving character.

How to nail looking ladylike 1. A small, nipped-in waist is central to this look, so team a structured blouse with an A-line skirt to create the effect of a small waist and cinch in your waist with a thin belt. 2. Tweed, wool and dark colours should be left behind in winter. Look for floaty materials in whites, brights and pastel colours. 3. Give a soft tea dress or A-line skirt more structure by wearing a petticoat underneath (yes, one of those underskirts your mother/ grandmother always wore). 4. Structured underwear can transform this look. Invest in control underwear, shapewear and even bustiers. 5. If full-on ladylike is a little too much for you, opt for a Peter Pan collared top or pussy bow tie blouse teamed with tapered trousers and kitten heels. 6. Ladylike extras: short leather gloves, Hermes-esque silk scarves, structured ladylike handbags, pearls and round, dark sunglasses (the rounder and darker the better!)

Crystal Renn 48

Goodbye Size Zero, Hello Size Twelve!

GLAM

FASHIOn

The fashion industry is starting to address real women again.

W

hen American plus size model Crystal Renn came walking down the runway for the Chanel Resort 2011 show in St Tropez, it was almost a divine sign that the fashion world had changed and finally embraced women with curves. If Karl Lagerfeld, the same man who famously made statements such as, “No one wants to see round women”, and, “fat mummies sit there in front of the television with their chip packets and say skinny models are ugly”, could send a model known for her size 12 to 14 physique down the runway, it most certainly means that some sort of body type and size revolution is taking place in the fashion world. This was confirmed by American designer Michael Kors who said, “The fashion industry is starting to address real women again. The emphasis in fashion is shifting toward an emphasis on real women who are women, not girls”. So, it looks like we can say goodbye to the waif-thin, size zero models, also known as “lollipop heads”, because real women are here to stay. Size her up But who exactly is the woman who started this size revolution? Crystal Renn is the 24 year old raven-haired American model whose career only started to really take off when she stopped starving herself and instead settled at her natural body size, a US size 12, opting for physical and mental wellness over a size zero body. Right now, she is one of the hottest, if not the hottest, and most sought after models in the fashion industry, having done runway shows for Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolce and Gabbana and Chanel to name a few, and graced internationally renowned fashion publications and glossies such as Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Glamour. Who can forget the moment she made her international debut when Jean Paul Gaultier himself led her down the catwalk to close his show in Paris in 2005, much to the amazement of the front row? Yet this story of success may easily have been a story of tragedy instead, had Crystal not decided to break the cycle of starvation and body hatred all in the bid to be a size 2, a cycle suffered by most models in the industry. Crystal’s career as a model all began when she was spotted by a modelling scout at the age of 14. At 175 pounds she was told she was too big and would need to lose nearly a third of her body weight if she was ever to be a model. Hence she followed a strict regimen of extreme exercise, sugar free jelly and Diet Coke to lose 80 pounds, causing Crystal to develop eating disorders and eventually pushing her to a health crisis. The choice was between her career and her health and fortunately, Crystal chose the latter. She changed her diet and exercise habits and regained 70 pounds,

Crystal Renn and Jean Paul Gaultier putting her at a healthy US size 12. Crystal documents her body struggles, modelling career and the fashion industry’s perception of body type and size in her book, “Hungry: A Young Model’s Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves”. The plus side of things Since re-emerging as a plus size model for Ford Models, Crystal has started a size revolution in the fashion and modelling industry, proving that real women, women with a bust, a butt and curves, can pull off the same designer ensembles and strut their stuff down the catwalk just as well as any size zero supermodel. Rumour has it that she is now one of the highest paid models in the plus size model industry. Thanks to Crystal, French Elle, Italian Vogue, US glossy V and Glamour are just a handful of high end publications which have recently featured beautiful plus size models on their front covers and in photoshoots. And supermodel Elle Macpherson, also famously known as “the body”, led out a set of notably “curvier” models for Louis Vuitton’s ladylike Fall/Winter 2010 show. But not everybody is happy about the use of curvier models. A number of stylists and designers have argued that the use of plus size models in mainstream fashion encourages an unhealthy lifestyle in a world which is plagued by obesity. But there is nothing obese about Crystal Renn. Curves ahead, I say! 49

hen you go to a spa for a review, you drool in anticipation over a head-totoe treatment that promises to deliver you at the end of an hour, de-stressed, unwound, smooth and scrubbed. So, when I was suggested a Sodashi thermal facial instead at the Four Seasons Spa, I could hear my shoulders and feet moan in disappointment. But at the end of 90 minutes, all that I could say is this: it is 600 odd bucks worth spending on yourself every month. However, for the effect to be long lasting, Nigel says a woman should spend at least 10 minutes every single day pampering herself. Nigel who? Nigel Franklyn of the silky smooth skin and perfect teeth, who also happens to handle business development for Sodashi USA. Nigel’s spa and skin product fascination apparently started when he was still a child. His mother, having done her duty by her brood of six, would lock herself up in the bathroom for 10 minutes every evening, during which time she tolerated no disturbance, and emerged refreshed and glowing. Still in a lull after the treatment, when he gave a goody bag of products suited to my skin, suggesting that I get started on the 10 minute daily ritual – the one his mother swore by: clean, massage, moisturise – I didn’t flash my offended smirk, as I am prone to in such situations. One reason is because I was super relaxed and hence full of bonhomie. The other is because my skin felt so tight and smooth, it just wasn’t worth risking a crease. If you ask me to list the steps of the treatment, the honest answer would be – “uh, what?” Jun, the Balinese therapist, estimates that REM sleep set in within 10

Cleanse, smoothen, wrap, voila... The facial begins with a cleansing routine products from the Balancing range was used for my combination skin. For the eye and lip a chamomile cleanser, and for the face and décolletage, a clay cleanser. This was followed by a compress. The Balancing concentrate is a gentler alternative to exfoliation. You dilute a few drops in hot water, and with the help of a towel use it as a compress on your face. This is followed by a routine of creams and gels, clay mask and calming face mist. Then we come to the piece de resistance – the thermal infusing face mask. Jun asked me if I was claustrophobic – and in a sleepy daze I replied in the negative, wondering if that question should even be asked at a spa. Well, that smothering sensation mentioned earlier? That was the mask tightening. While the mask is on, the hands get some attention, and then we are prepped for the world of the mortals with a finishing touch of moisturiser and mists. I skipped the rest of the spa facilities, because the Jun suggested the product remains on for the day. But if you are planning a visit, go a little early and lap up the rest of the facilities The Four Seasons spa offers. The hydro therapy in particular looked very appealing. Maybe this should be your V-day gift to yourself. Self love is the best kind.

What the stars foretell...

lauren conrad 1st February 1986 Capricorn

Cancer

Scorpio

Don’t get discouraged just because something important takes time. Good things are worth the wait. Step back from your ambitions long enough to listen to your heart. You may feel vulnerable in the process, but you’ll have a better chance of finding the right answers if you start with your feelings first.

It’s challenging to get a clear picture of yourself this month, so you lean on others to assist you in your process of self-reflection. A resilient personal or business relationship can offer you the security you need while you initiate a journey of self-discovery.

There is a strong emphasis throughout the month on practical interactions and everyday affairs, with several planets clustered in orderly Capricorn. Excitement comes and goes, but trying to make the good times last will diminish rather than sustain your enjoyment.

Aries

Leo

You begin the month on an imaginative high that makes it difficult to accept life as it is. Your impatience tempts you to blast forward no matter what signals you’re receiving; however, this isn’t a smart strategy now. A better tactic would be to pay attention to the current obstacles and stop pushing so hard.

Vivacious Venus’s entry into enthusiastic Sagittarius and your risk-taking 9th House on January 7 is another reminder that you need excitement more than safety to maintain your interest. The sky’s the limit if you can remove old obstacles and make your daily routine more efficient.

Taurus

A perfect opportunity to connect with a love interest arises this month. But it’s also important to stay in touch with your playful side, as being overly serious can kill a romantic mood. Try to remain receptive to all kinds of information, regardless of its source or its apparent usefulness.

Your year revs up rapidly and you must hit the ground running. Your key planet, Venus, entices you to take a risk to achieve greater intimacy. Although you often resist change, don’t stand still now. This kind of amazing potential is rare, so be ready to swing into action immediately.

Gemini The beginning of this year is an appropriate time to take a serious look at your relationships. Your cheerful optimism is contagious now, but don’t let your hopes lead you astray. Be careful about making promises you can’t keep or falling for another person’s incredible story that is probably too good to be true.

66

Virgo

Libra Open your mind to fresh ideas and move forward boldly rather than hunkering down in a defensive posture. Playing it safe will only prolong your insecurity. Bold action, however, burns away fear in the excitement of new undertakings.

Sagittarius Restlessness clashes with responsibility, which can leave you wondering whether to play it safe or go for broke. Your ruling planet, Jupiter, returns to innovative Aries, which amplifies your desire for creative adventure. Trusting your intuition may defy logic, but it will build a more solid foundation than just following someone else’s lead.

Aquarius Taking time to rest and recuperate when you need it makes you even more effective once you get back into the game. The presence of impulsive Mars in your 1st House of Personality charges you with passionate energy, enhancing your vitality and emboldening your actions.

Pisces Err on the side of being strong-willed and purposeful right now, rather than weakening your authority to placate others. Although you may encounter rivals who challenge your authority, don’t surrender. Instead, use this as an opportunity to sharpen your skills at managing tough situations.
