Osceola High School ofrecerá el programa de Diploma AP Capstone
Kissimmee, FL - Osceola High School es una de las aproximadamente 2,000 escuelas en todo el mundo que implementan el programa AP Capstone Diploma™, un programa innovador que anima a los estudiantes a desarrollar habilidades para el éxito universitario y profesional, incluyendo el pensamiento crítico, la investigación, la colaboración y la comunicación. Osceola High School to offer AP Capstone Diploma Program
Kissimmee, FL - Osceola High School is one of approximately 2,000 schools worldwide to implement the AP Capstone Diploma™ program― an innovative program that encourages students to develop skills for college and career success, including critical thinking, research, collaboration, and communication. The program consists of two yearlong courses taken in sequence: AP® Seminar and AP Research. The pathway to the Capstone program at Osceola High is called Kowboy Advanced Placement Scholars (KAPS).
Students who score a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on 4 additional AP Exams of their choosing earn the AP Capstone Diploma. This signifies outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills. Students who score a 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research (and not on 4 additional AP Exams) earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™. Osceola High will start offering AP Seminar in the fall of 2022. In AP Seminar, typically taken in 10th or 11th grade, students choose real-world topics and evaluate them from multiple perspectives. Students identify credibility and bias in sources and develop arguments in support of a recommendation.
“The AP Capstone program will prepare our diverse student population to become skilled collaborators, critical thinkers, and consumers of information,: said Osceola School District Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace. "The Capstone courses will give students flexibility to explore the complex topics affecting their lives, and we are excited to see their research.”
In the subsequent AP Research course, students design and execute a college-level research project on a topic of personal interest. Students receive firsthand experience in writing a research question, executing an appropriate method, analyzing data, presenting their results, and defending their findings. Both AP Capstone™ courses are project based, and students are required to deliver written arguments, collaborate in teams, and deliver professional multimedia presentations as part of their AP Exams.
“The AP Capstone courses enable students to explore realworld issues in great depth through research and collaboration,” said Rushi Sheth, Executive Director of the AP Capstone Diploma program. He adds, “This provides terrific opportunities for students to write and present their work effectively, both individually and in teams the very skills professors and employers are demanding.”

Valencia College anuncia nueva mascota
Orlando, FL - Valencia College ha presentado su nueva mascota, y es el Valencia Puma.
“Creemos que es la mascota perfecta para encarnar el espíritu y las características de nuestros estudiantes, exalumnos, personal, profesores y nuestras comunidades: fuerza, flexibilidad, perseverancia y la capacidad de superar obstáculos”, dijo la Dra. Kathleen Plinske, presidenta de Valencia College. .

Valencia College announces new mascot
Orlando, FL - Valencia College has unveiled its new mascot – and it’s the Valencia Puma.
“We believe it is the perfect mascot to embody the spirit and characteristics of our students, alumni, staff, faculty and our communities — strength, resilience, perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles,” said Dr. Kathleen Plinske, president of Valencia College.
Florida pumas, sometimes known as panthers, were listed as an endangered species in 1973, but their population has grown tenfold since then. These strong animals thrive in an interconnected community, where they interact with each other regularly.
At the request of student leaders, the college began the search for a new mascot in November 2021. College officials received more than 650 suggestions, ranging from a velociraptor to a tomato. Led by student government members, a committee whittled the choices down to three finalists: an orange, a cardinal and a puma.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community were encouraged to vote for their favorite mascot online – and when the voting concluded on March 29, the puma was the clear winner, with 45 percent of the vote. The orange received 22 percent of the vote, while the cardinal received 33 percent.
What’s next for the Valencia College Puma? A mascot costume, of course.
Valencia officials are working with industry experts to design a puma mascot costume and hope to have one ready to unveil in fall 2022. The student body will also be asked to vote on a name for the new mascot in the fall.
Valencia College Puma merchandise will be available at the Valencia College campus stores soon.
Formerly known as the Matadors, Valencia College retired that mascot in 2010. The college no longer fields athletic teams, having eliminated athletics in 1998 after students elected to reroute those funds to provide computer labs and free tutoring for all students.

Requires supervisors of elections to check voter rolls every year for ineligible voters.
Broadens the prohibition of election supervisors from receiving “Zuckerbucks.” PROTECTING THE PEOPLE’S VOTE.

El proyecto de ley también establece la Oficina de Delitos Electorales y Seguridad Dentro del Departamento de Estado. Hasta ahora, no había una oficina dedicada a investigar todos los delitos electorales en Florida. This legislation will strengthen election security measures by requiring voter rolls to be annually reviewed and updated, strengthening ID requirements, establishing the Office of Election Crimes and Security to investigate election law violations, and increasing penalties for violations of election laws. SB 524 increases the penalty for ballot harvesting from a first-degree misdemeanor to a third-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and up to five years of probation. The bill also establishes the Office of Election Crimes and Security within the Department of State. Before now, there was not a dedicated office to investigate all election crimes in Florida. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement received positions and resources in this year’s budget to support the criminal investigation of election crimes in partnership with the Office of Election Crimes and Security. The bill requires voter list maintenance to be conducted annually by supervisors of elections in order to combat the possibility of fraudulent voting. Finally, the bill requires the Department of State to recommend a plan on how to strengthen ID requirements for mail-in ballots. The Department of State must submit a report on the plan and draft legislation for any statutory changes needed to implement the plan by February 1, 2023. The plan will include how to prescribe the use of a Florida driver license number, Florida identification card number, social security number, or any part thereof to confirm the identity of each elector returning a vote-bymail-ballot.
