A 50 días de Qatar 2022

Orlando, FL - Algunos equipos ya jugaron sus últimos duelos de preparación rumbo a la Copa del Mundo. En general, la expectativa está en su punto máximo, y los nervios también. La hora de la verdad se acerca, pero aún hay muchas historias por seguir antes del 20 de noviembre.

Candidatos tambaleantes

La Liga de las Naciones de la UEFA dejó más dudas que respuestas en algunos de los favoritos. Francia fue superado ampliamente por Dinamarca (a quien enfrentarán también en Qatar), y, además, el drama de la familia Pogba vs Mbappé ha distraído al grupo. ¿Será la maldición del campeón golpeando antes de tiempo?

Inglaterra, otra de las favoritas, acabó su grupo de Nations League sin ninguna victoria y en último lugar. Alemania solo ganó un partido de sus últimos 7, y fue sorprendido en casa por Hungría. Mientras España, su rival de grupo, cayó en casa ante Suiza y aún tiene muchas dudas en la defensa central y en la delantera, y las críticas a Luis Enrique por rehusarse en llamar a Iago Aspas (español con más goles el último año) no terminan. En realidad, los únicos europeos que dejaron buenas sensaciones tras este minitorneo son Holanda, Portugal y Croacia.

Sudamericanos contrastantes

Para muchos, el gran candidato del mundial será Brasil. Más allá de la cábala de que ningún equipo #1 en el ranking FIFA ha sido campeón del mundo (lo que será la Canarinha cuando empiece Qatar 2022), todo parece indicar que son el rival a vencer. Han ganado sus últimos 7 partidos y 6 de ellos por al menos 3 goles.

Pero Argentina no se queda muy atrás, con 34 partidos invicto (la racha más larga en su historia) antes de enfrentar a Jamaica el martes por la noche. La química en la albiceleste no había estado tan bien, pese a que en cuanto a talento son ligeramente inferiores a otras potencias.

Sin embargo, tanto Uruguay como Ecuador han tenido resultados mixtos. Este año, los charrúas han vencido a México, Panamá y Canadá, pero les costó un mundo ante E.U.A. y perdieron ante Irán, y aún quedan dudas pese a que no tendrán más amistosos antes del mundial. Los ecuatorianos tienen una sequía importante, anotando solo 2 goles en sus 5 partidos del 2022 (incluyendo un penal fallado que hubiera ganado el partido ante Japón), aunque no han recibido gol en todo el año.

Norteamericanos estresantes

El “Tata” Martino es tal vez el hombre más odiado en México hoy en día. No importa lo que haga, entre medios y afición lo verán mal y lo criticarán. A veces justificado, otras no, la realidad es que la selección mexicana no ha rendido al nivel esperado, y aún hay muchas dudas antes del mundial. Pero Estados Unidos aún no está mejor. Los últimos partidos, incluyendo una derrota ante Japón sin meter las manos y un insípido empate sin goles ante Arabia Saudita, hacen notar que esta selección tal vez aún es demasiado joven. Canadá hizo una gran eliminatoria, pero tampoco ha brillado en sus últimos amistosos. ¿Será posible que nadie de CONCACAF pase a la siguiente ronda?

La Copa del Mundo comienza el 20 de noviembre, y la fiebre mundialista ya se empieza a sentir.

Qatar 2022 is 50 days away

Orlando, FL - Some teams have already played their last preparation matches for the World Cup. In general, the expectation is at its peak, and the nerves too. The moment of truth is approaching, but there are still many stories to follow before November 20.

Wobbly Candidates

The UEFA Nations League left more questions than answers for some of the favorites. France was widely outplayed by Denmark (whom they’ll also face in Qatar), and, in addition, the drama of the Pogba family vs Mbappé has distracted the group. Will it be the curse of the champion hitting before time?

England, another favorite, finished their Nations League group winless and in last place. Germany only won one match of their last 7, and were shocked at home by Hungary, while Spain, their group rival, lost at home to Switzerland and still has many doubts in central defense and up front, and the criticism of Luis Enrique for refusing to call Iago Aspas (the Spaniard with the most goals last year) keeps going. The only Europeans that left a good feeling after this mini tournament are the Netherlands, Portugal, and Croatia.

Contrasting South Americans

For many, the great candidate in the World Cup will be Brazil. Beyond the streak that no #1 team in the FIFA ranking has been world champion (what the Canarinha will be when Qatar 2022 begins), everything seems to indicate that they’re the rival to beat. They’ve won their last 7 matches and 6 of them by at least 3 goals.

But Argentina isn’t far behind, going 34 games unbeaten (the longest streak in its history) before facing Jamaica on Tuesday night. The chemistry in the albiceleste hadn’t been this good, despite the fact that in terms of talent they are slightly inferior to other powers.

However, both Uruguay and Ecuador have had mixed results. This year, the Charrúas have beaten Mexico, Panama and Canada, but they struggled against the USA and lost to Iran, and there are still doubts despite the fact that they won’t have any more friendlies before the World Cup. The Ecuadorians are in a significant drought, scoring only 2 goals in their 5 games in 2022 (including a missed penalty that would’ve won the game against Japan), although they have not conceded a goal all year.

Stressful North Americans

"Tata" Martino is perhaps the most hated man in Mexico today. No matter what he does, the media and the fans will see him badly and criticize him. Sometimes justified, sometimes not, the reality is that the Mexican team hasn’t performed at the expected level, and there are still many doubts before the World Cup. But USA is still not better off. Recent games, including a beatdown to Japan and an insipid goalless draw against Saudi Arabia, point to the fact that this team may still be too young. Canada had a great qualifying phase, but they haven't shone in their last few friendlies either. Is it possible for no one from CONCACAF to make it to the next round?

The World Cup begins on November 20, and the World Cup fever is already being felt.
