Brilla Florida en la NFL

Por 1ª vez desde 1999, los tres equipos del Estado del sol se metieron a postemporada en la NFL. Pese a que dos fueron eliminados en la ronda comodín, y el otro la tiene muy complicada en Kansas City, fue un año en general positivo para los de Florida.

Tampa Bay

Serán unos meses de novela en la bahía, en especial con la muy posible salida de Tom Brady, quien es agente libre. Sus últimas palabras en la conferencia de prensa el lunes, tras su eliminación ante Dallas, sonaron a despedida: “gracias a todos por recibirme, estoy muy agradecido por el respeto y espero habérselo regresado a ustedes”. Tom ha coqueteado ya con Vegas y Miami, y podría incluso retirarse, por lo cual Tampa debe pensar ya en su posible remplazo. ¿Garoppolo, Mayfield, hacer el intento por Lamar, o tomar a alguien en el draft? Fuera del mariscal, los Bucs claramente necesitan mejorar el ataque terrestre, el peor de la liga, y tal vez hacer cambios de entrenador. La fórmula Bowles-Leftwich no funcionó, y la cantidad de agentes libres es alarmante. Un año agridulce, y tal vez el fin de una era.

Miami

Toda la temporada de los Dolphins se puede resumir en la salud de Tua. Su mariscal sufrió al menos tres contusiones cerebrales, y en el momento más importante, su duelo de playoffs en Buffalo, no estuvo presente. Tras darle todo el apoyo en la temporada baja, y traer a Tyreek Hill, Tagovailoa respondió e incluso lideraba la liga en yardas a media temporada. Miami iba 8-0 cuando Tua podía concluir los partidos (0-3 cuando se ausentó por contusiones), pero en diciembre empezó la debacle. 5 derrotas seguidas, más otra lesión a la cabeza del hawaiano, y los ‘Phins llegaron arrastrándose a playoffs con su tercer mariscal. Al final fue Skylar Thompson quien jugó, nada mal, en Buffalo el domingo pasado, pero Miami nuevamente se quedó corto. Ir a playoffs por apenas la 2ª ocasión en 14 años no es poco, pero ahora, igual que en Tampa, el posible cambio de mariscal será el tema los próximos meses.

Jacksonville

Aún faltan palabras por escribir en la temporada de los Jags, pero hasta ahora es un rotundo éxito. De ser el peor equipo en 2021, a ganar su división y (al menos) un partido de playoffs en 2022. Trevor Lawrence está poco a poco entrando en la élite de mariscales, pero mucho del éxito es crédito de Doug Pederson, el coach de primer año y candidato al coach del año. Los Jaguars se enracharon en el momento correcto, ganando 5 al hilo para meterse a postemporada por 2ª vez en 15 años. Pero el momento cumbre vino con la remontada ante los Chargers, de perderlo 27-0 a ganarlo 31-30 en la última jugada del partido. Lawrence se sobrepuso de 4 intercepciones y con 4 anotaciones guió a Jax a la victoria. Pase lo que pase el sábado en Kansas City, los Jaguars van en la dirección correcta.

Florida shines in the NFL

For the first time since 1999, all three teams from the Sunshine State entered the NFL postseason. Despite two being eliminated in the wild card round, and the other’s a big underdog in Kansas City, it was an overall positive year for the Floridians.

Tampa Bay

It will be a few months of drama in the bay, especially with the very possible departure of Tom Brady, who’s a free agent. His last words in the press conference on Monday, after his elimination against Dallas, sounded like a farewell: "Thank you everybody for welcoming me, just very grateful for the respect and I hope I gave it back it to you." Tom has already flirted with Vegas and Miami, and he could even retire, so Tampa must already think about a possible replacement for him. Garoppolo, Mayfield, go for Lamar, or take someone in the draft? Outside of the quarterback, the Bucs clearly need to improve their running game, the worst in the league, and perhaps make coaching changes. The Bowles-Leftwich formula didn't work, and the number of free agents is alarming. A bittersweet year, and perhaps the end of an era.

Miami

The Dolphins' entire season can be summed up by Tua's health. The quarterback suffered at least three concussions, and at the biggest moment, their playoff matchup in Buffalo, he wasn't there. After giving him their full support in the offseason, and bringing in Tyreek Hill, Tagovailoa responded and even led the league in yards at midseason. Miami was 8-0 when Tua could finish the games (0-3 when he was absent with concussions), but in December the debacle began. 5 straight losses, plus another head injury for the Hawaiian, and the 'Phins crawled into the playoffs with their third quarterback. In the end it was Skylar Thompson who played, not badly, in Buffalo last Sunday, but Miami again came up short. Going to the playoffs for just the second time in 14 years is no small feat, but now, as in Tampa, a possible quarterback upgrade will be the theme for the next few months.

Jacksonville

There are still words to write about the Jags season, but so far it is a resounding success. From being the worst team in 2021, to winning their division and (at least) one playoff game in 2022. Trevor Lawrence is slowly entering the quarterback elite, but much of the success is to the credit of Doug Pederson, the first-year coach and Coach of the Year candidate. The Jaguars went on a roll at the right time, winning 5 in a row to reach the postseason for the second time in 15 years. But the crowning moment came with the comeback against the Chargers, from losing it 27-0 to winning it 31-30 on the very last play. Lawrence overcame 4 interceptions with 4 touchdowns to guide Jax to victory. Whatever happens Saturday in Kansas City, the Jaguars are headed in the right direction.

In December 2022, only the names of six celebrities were revealed, and they were more than ready to make La Casa de los Famosos 2023 burn, as they showed in one of the commercials for Telemundo's reality show.
