Always lock your vehicle and store all items out of sight. Breaking into an empty car isn’t worth a criminal’s time. However, anything left in plain view—from your holiday gifts to spare change, sunglasses, CDs, cell phones or briefcases—may tempt a thief. Help prevent your vehicle from being stolen by always locking your car and using anti-theft devices. Never leave your vehicle running while you run inside your home or a store—even if for only a minute or two.

Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts, so be cautious when accepting a package. It’s not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others’ generosity during the holidays by going doorto-door for charitable donations when there’s no charity involved. Ask for identification, and find out how the funds will be used. If you aren’t satisfied, don’t give. Help a charitable organization you know and like instead (check out page 26 for a local list.)

CELEBRATE RESPONSIBLY

The holiday season is a time of celebration and revelry. Drinking and driving is a danger to everyone on the road. If you choose to drink alcohol at a party, don’t drive. Take a cab, use public transportation, or a designated driver. Have fun, but remember to celebrate responsibly.

HOLIDAY FLOUNDERS

CHOOSING A NEW PET

| By Gary Borgman, DVM |

With

the winter holiday season rapidly approaching, many families begin considering adding a four-legged family member. We are often asked questions about this decision-making process; so what better time than now to address the important issues and questions a family may have.

Q: What type of a pet should I get? A dog or a cat? A: This truly is a personal preference. Your available space, time, and personal preferences and experiences will help decide this for you. Just remember that puppies need to be house-trained, while kittens instinctively know how to use a litter box. Dogs need to go outside for elimination functions while felines can do just fine by remaining indoors. Dogs require and even demand a great deal of interaction time, while cats are often very independent and aloof.

12 osceolawoman.com | NOV/DEC 2015

Q: Okay, so I have decided to get a pet. What is the best age to get a puppy or kitten? A: The ideal age for bringing in a new puppy or kitten is eight weeks old. This is the best age to begin the interaction, socialization, and training of a puppy or kitten and the mother is usually ready to let them go. Q: How can I be assured of

good health? A: Conscientious breeders and pet stores will provide the legally required Official Certificate of Veterinary Examination for puppies and kittens. This is your best assurance of proper pre-sale health examination, and timely preventive health

vaccinations and parasite control treatments with laboratory confirmation of negative status for parasites.

Q: So now I have made my

decision to add to our family, and I know where and when I am going to get my puppy or kitten. What is the next step? A: A health check-up, including review of past immunizations, parasite control measures, and a complete physical examination should be arranged as soon as possible. This visit should be within the first 24-72 hours.

Q: The holidays can be very busy and hectic in many families. Do you have any recommendations? A: Yes indeed; adding a new pet to the family can be complicated. It is recommended that puppies be introduced to a “crate” from day one in a new home. This crate or den will provide a sense of security and comfort. These crates come in a wide variety of sizes and

styles. It should be about 2-3 times as long as the puppy, and of course tall enough for the puppy to stand up. I like to provide the meals in this crate, with the door open, so that it is a positive place to go. Then when the puppy comes out and starts sniffing and circling, we know it is time to get him/her outside for elimination functions. Puppies need lots of exercise outside of the crate, but they do eventually get tired and ready for a nap, and the crate provides that safe retreat.

Q: Are there any specific hazards to our dogs and cats during the holidays? A: After most holidays, we see an increase in gastro-intestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. This can be due to rich “people” foods, left-overs, garbage, or ingestion of ornaments or toys. A dog in a crate or a cat in a separate room from where the human meals are served is less likely to suffer these consequences. The veterinarians and staff at Kissimmee Animal Hospital (407-846-1379) and Poinciana Pet Clinic (407-518-0880) are available to answer your questions about pet health care. We are here to help and to serve.

Everyone MASHED POTATO ANTICS

I

pictures a picture-perfect holiday, but let’s face it, stuff happens! Here’s some good flops that really get a giggle, smile, or a cringe!

t was my turn to make Thanksgiving; I couldn’t wait to get the family together around the table, with pretty place settings and mounds of fixings. One staple, the mashed potato, was on my homemade item list. I worked hard to make sure they were perfectly whipped and seasoned. Now, Thanksgiving calls for a labor of love; however, most of the year, my version of mashed potatoes comes from a box. My five year old was all too familiar. With everyone ready at the Thanksgiving table, I put down the decorative bowl filled with my homemade spuds, when my five-year old yelled out “wow, mom; how many boxes did that take?!” Needless to say, my face matched my homemade cranberry sauce. –Kim

WHERE IS GRANDMA?

T

he mall during the holidays; one word, misery. We took Grandma along for the madness; when she started to get tired, we handed her the car keys and told her to go relax while we finished up. Thirty minutes later, we reached our vehicle, but there was no Grandma in sight. We fell into a little bit of panic. We called the mall security, and for the next hour or so, we searched the mall grounds for her. Finally, over the security’s walkie-talkie, we heard another officer claim that a shopper had found an old lady napping in his car. Sure enough, she had found an unlocked car, just like ours, and got right into her siesta. We’ll never look at the mall parking lot the same. -Jenny

MINTY FRESH BREATH

T

here’s nothing like Christmas morning, and they are certainly worth waking up early for! We were at my sister-in-law’s house, and all us adults got up at the crack of dawn to make sure Santa’s arrival was well prepared. Half-awake, I made my way to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Still groggy, I opened the medicine cabinet, and reached in for the toothpaste. After about 5 seconds of brushing, I realized something was off. I immediately woke up when I noticed I was brushing with Bengay. My coffee tasted a little off that morning. –Marty

SNOWBALL MISHAP

We went north to New England for Christmas, and we were so excited to see some snow! We decided to take part in an old-fashioned snow ball fight. I was ready to aim and fire, when my three-year old niece ran right in my path. In slow motion, I watched as my icy ball of frozen fun, smashed right into her adorable little face. The next hour was filled with tears, cuts – and my guilt. I think we’ll stay in sunny Florida this year. – Steven

A CHRISTMAS MULLIGAN

E

ven as young adults, we always stayed with our parents for the holidays. That Christmas we opened our gifts, as usual, which followed with Mom getting busy making her holiday meal. I was so excited to receive a putting-set for golf this year. I went right to practicing. Unfortunately, I was a little too eager, as I hit the ball a little more than just a putt. As I watched its projected path, there was nothing I could do but cringe one eye waiting for the unenviable. With a splash, my Mom was covered in gravy. I guess even boys in their twenties need to be told not to play with balls in the house. –Kyle

AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE

I

t was the last Christmas that my Grandmother was alive. She was always the epicenter of our holidays. This Christmas, she seemed a little down. She explained to us that in her wrapping craze, she somehow lost her engagement ring. We made sure to slowly rip open our presents, and in one of my last packages, the ring was laying perfectly on some tissue paper. I never jumped so high with glee for a Christmas present before in my life, and to this day, it is still the best present I have ever received as it sits in my dresser. –Sarah, our editor.

HOLIDAY TRANSITIONS Making

FILL A LANTERN, OR VASE LANTERNS ARE IN THESE DAYS, AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY. THEY OFFER JUST THE RIGHT TOUCH OF RUSTIC ELEGANCE, AND CAN STAY IN YOUR HOUSE ALL-YEAR ROUND. ALTHOUGH MANY OPEN IN THE FRONT, BY LAYING A LANTERN DOWN, YOU CAN FILL IT WITH SOME NIFTY STUFF TO MAKE IT A CENTERPIECE OF YOUR HOLIDAY DÉCOR. THE SAME GOES FOR VASES; JUST SWITCH OUT THE FILLERS AS YOU TRANSITION THROUGH YOUR HOLIDAYS.

the switch from Thanksgiving to Christmas, may not have to involve such heavy lifting. Check out these easy transition ideas, which with a few simple swap-outs, can make your holiday decorating a breeze.

CONSIDER A HOLIDAY TREE THERE IS NO RULE ABOUT USING A TREE FOR JUST CHRISTMAS; MAKE AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY TREE! BY SELECTING AN ARTIFICIAL TREE WITH WHITE LIGHTING, YOU CAN EASILY TRANSITION FROM EACH MAJOR HOLIDAY THROUGHOUT THE SEASON. HERE ARE SOME GREAT PICKS FOR YOUR DECORATIONS:

THANKSGIVING

THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is all about fall colors; reds, oranges, yellows, and whites. Although there are fewer options than the other holidays, it doesn’t mean your Thanksgiving tree has to be anything but spectacular.

1

LET THE FOOD be the center piece! Fill vases or lanterns with cranberries or corn kernels, and place candles in them to add ambiance. Make sure the candle is placed firmly into the filler to avoid any accidents.

2

ANOTHER great filler for texture and fun is feathers! What a great way to represent that Thanksgiving turkey. Make sure that the vase is shorter than the feathers, so you can stand them up. For your lantern, tie the feather together and place behind some other fun trinkets, like small pumpkins.

3

NOW IF YOU HAVE A LARGE CERAMIC VASE; consider placing a pumpkin neatly on top. A contrasting white vase would look perfect with the orange. But, with a little paint, you can make that pumpkin contrast perfectly with whatever vase you desire. This is a great addition to your front door!

CHRISTMAS

1

ONE IDEA, is to decorate recipe cards of your favorite Thanksgiving dishes. Punch a whole on the top, slip through some ribbon, and hang throughout your tree. Make a card to represent each member of your family, and your tree will be a talkingpiece before the big meal.

2

ANOTHER GREAT WAY to add color and texture, is burlap. It comes in every color these days, so you can really have some fun with it! Head to your favorite craft store in Osceola (see: Find ‘em in Osceola) and look for oranges, reds, and whites. The traditional burlap is also a perfect Thanksgiving fit!

3

THEN ADD THE FINISHING TOUCHES; cover your tree in Autumn leaves, gourds, acorns, and fall flowers – and you’ll feel like you’ve left Florida’s palm trees behind.

Oh what fun, it is to fill vases! Christmas is known for white-sparkling lights, and using them in vases and lanterns, is the perfect indoor touch. One great idea is to mix lights and glass ornaments in a vase or lantern, letting them contrast each other. Picking either white lights and colored ornaments, or colored lights and white ornaments; you’re really going to love the look when it’s complete. Don’t worry about cords, you can find battery-powered light strings in most holiday sections at department stores.

2

CHRISTMAS The Christmas Tree is all about tradition. Break out those family ornaments and reminisce from holidays gone by. We’d love to see how your tree looks! Post your best Christmas Tree photos on our Facebook page: facebook.com/osceolawomanmagazine We’ll share our favorites!

1

GOT LITTLE ONES RUNNING AROUND, and worried about those glass bulbs? Try mixing lights with safer objects, like pine cones, or DIY snowballs.

NOW FOR THOSE LARGE VASES. Place a wreath on the mouth of the vase (or in the background of your lantern) then fill the vase with shimmering branches. We like the classic green wreath, with white branches, but having fun with colors is what decorating is all about! Just the wreath alone in the lantern will make for a great piece, but adding levels of unlit white candles in the front will add a whole new dimension to your holiday lantern.

HEALTH

FROM OSTEOPOROSIS TO SLIP-AND-FALLS,

Trust Your Bones to the Experts

Often

when people think of osteoporosis, they instinctively imagine an elderly woman with brittle bones. However, many would be surprised to know that the prevalent bone condition can strike at any age.

While it is true women get osteoporosis more often than men, and risks increase with age, there are other factors that could be putting your bones at risk. The National Institutes of Health refers to osteoporosis as a disease in which the bones become weak and are more likely to break. Those affected by the disease often break bones in the hip, spine, and wrist. According to Osceola Regional Medical Center’s Online Health Library, menopause is one of the biggest contributing risk factors

for osteoporosis. The decrease in hormones that occurs during menopause can lead to bone loss, and women over 50 are at risk but few know it. The health library notes that people who drink a lot of coffee and alcohol are also at higher risk. Nutrition also plays a part. As we grow older, our need for vitamin D goes up. Adults need 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium, depending on age, and at least 30 minutes of daily moderate physical activity. Testing bone density is the surest way to check for bone health.

TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT BONE HEALTH

A

qualified physician can advise you on protecting your bone health. All women over 65 should have a bone density test. Women who are younger than 65 and at high risk for fractures should also have a bone density test. Your doctor might also want to do a blood test to check for a vitamin D deficiency.

Always Available. Even on Holidays. In the middle of the night, in the middle of a holiday dinner or in the middle of a four-day weekend, VITAS is here to admit a patient, answer a question, visit a family or send a nurse to the bedside of a seriously ill patient. Call us whenever you need us. VITAS can help.

800.723.3233 VITAS.com

TRUST YOUR BONES TO YOUR LOCAL EXPERTS

A

dults aren’t the only ones at risk for breaking bones. Research shows children are also getting fractures at an alarming rate. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture show 86 percent of teen girls and 64 percent of teen boys are calcium deficient, which can lead to a bone-density deficiency later in life. From osteoporosis-related fractures to teen slip-and-falls, accidents happen, and when they do you should always trust your bones to the experts. Osceola Regional has been recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for Hip, Knee and Spine Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield and is accredited by the Joint Commission with a Disease-Specific Certification for Excellence in Joint - Hip and Knee Replacements. Osceola Regional’s orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons perform the most minimally invasive procedures available to date, with outstanding outcomes and reduced hospital stays. The hospital is also home to the Comprehensive Fracture Program. HOLIDAY FAVORITES The

THE MAIN DISH

- Without the Guilt

TIP

Healthy

most wonderful time of the year, can also be the most over-indulging time for snacks, treats, and holiday leftovers. Making some simple switches to tasty-alternative recipes and ingredients, can allow you to continue to indulge, without the holiday bulge.

FOR STARTERS SAVORY SPINACH BALLS

2 (10 ounce) boxes frozen spinach, drained well 3⁄4 cup melted butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 4 eggs 1⁄2 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic salt 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper 2 cups seasoned bread crumbs Mix all ingredients well, form into two-inch balls. Chill in fridge for 2 hours. Pop ‘em in the oven for 20 minutes at 350 degrees, on an ungreased baking sheet. Makes about 2 dozen. Enjoy!

TOMATO, BASIL, AND MOZZARELLA SKEWERS

As simple as it sounds, look for some festive red skewers to really make them pop. Talk about the perfect Christmas colors, too!

20 osceolawoman.com | NOV/DEC 2015

Turkey is good for any holiday get-together. Many recipes may call to slather on butter for a crispy-outer skin. However, by swapping out to olive oil, you’re still keeping that crispness, and adding the goodness that only olive oil can offer. Make sure to cook until your instant-read thermometer reads 165 degrees, at the thickest part of the turkey breast. Another great swap for the turkey seasoning, is losing a lot of the salt, and adding fresh herbs. Rosemary, sage, and thyme all compliment the taste of turkey, and will make your house smell divine! Make sure to stick to the white meat, such as breasts, as dark meat can add around 30-50 calories per serving.

Love to eat rolls and butter with dinner? Try swapping out with 100% whole-grain toasted baguettes, dipped in olive-oil and your own special blend of spices.

DESSERT – THE FINISHING TOUCH

THE SIDE DISHES ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH

When you think of squash during the holidays, you think of butter and brown sugar. However, just simple olive oil, salt, and pepper will do. Preheat your oven to 400, then prepare one large squash by peeling, seeding, and cubing. Add at least 3 tablespoons of olive oil, and 2 teaspoons of both salt and pepper, and toss the cubed squash well in this mixture. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until tender, turning once during baking. We think you’ll make this an all-year staple at the dinner table.

CRANBERRYWALNUT SPINACH SALAD

There are classic pairings like PB&J or peas and carrots; but we think cranberry, walnuts, and spinach should be added to that list! Grab a fresh bag of baby spinach, add chopped walnuts and dried cranberries, and mix in a large bowl. When well mixed, top with crumbled goat cheese and allow diners to top with their own olive oil and balsamic vinegar. They’ll be back for seconds.

SKINNY MASHED POTATOES

Mouth-watering mashed potatoes without the guilt? Yes please! By axing the heaving whipping cream and pads of butter, you’re on your way to a healthier spud. For every two pounds of red or Yukon-gold potatoes, add four large garlic cloves (peeled and halved), one-quarter cup of fat-free sour cream, one-quarter cup of fat-free chicken broth, two tablespoons of skim milk (or more for a creamier texture), one tablespoon of light butter, and then salt, pepper, and fresh snipped chives to taste. Talk about yum!

Still get that sweet ending to your meal with this easy and healthy apple crisp. Mix three baking apples, cored and sliced thin, with one teaspoon of cinnamon, two tablespoons of sugar, and two tablespoons of flour. Place into a 9-inch baking dish. Then crumble one cup quick oats, one teaspoon of vanilla, a half teaspoon of cinnamon, one-quarter cup brown sugar, and two tablespoons of natural butter. Cover the apple mixture with your crumble mixture, and bake at 325 for about 30 minutes. The apples should be soft, and the crumble mix should be golden. Top with low-fat ice cream or whipped cream, and you are ready to relax after all your healthy holiday baking.

TCA peels might be a great compromise to laser treatments for skin troubles such as wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and/ or enlarged pores. TCA peels are also great if you are on a budget.

WHAT IS TCA?

Trichloroacetic Acid is one of the strongest peels available, used in various concentrations. It penetrates deep into your skin’s superficial layers to exfoliate and renew the skin while improving your overall complexion with minimal downtime and at a very reasonable price. TCA peels cannot be performed in conventional “day spas” as these are medical-strength peels, performed at dermatologists, like Associates in Dermatology, by experienced paramedical estheticians. You’ll see marked improvement with just one treatment, but your paramedical esthetician may recommend several additional treatments to achieve optimal results. You can also boost your skin care ritual, pre and post Chemical Peel with Ethereal Beauty - Anti Aging Cellular Elixir. The duo of the peel combined with this supercharged facial serum will remarkably and visibly rejuvenate your skin. Associates in Dermatology For your convenience Associates in Dermatology has 12 locations throughout Central Florida. 800 827 SKIN (7546). www.Dermorlando.com

ADDY’S STORY

I

HOW AN OSCEOLA CHARITY CAN REACH BEYOND COUNTY LINES

n Western Massachusetts, Addalyn Hart, a seven yearold full of smiles and love, sits in a hospital room for yet another breathing treatment. When Addy was young, she was diagnosed with children’s interstitial lung disorder. This disease causes many symptoms for Addy, including severe asthma, decreased lung function, and arthritis. Simply playing with her friends and cousins can bring on a hospital visit. In the fall of 2014, the Hart’s got a great surprise, the Make a

Wish Foundation had matched Addy with a generous donor who would be sending Addy, her brother Lucas, and her parents Tarrah and Rodger, to Orlando for a week of themepark fun. They hopped on a plane to Osceola, where Give Kids the World in Kissimmee welcomed them with open arms, and at no charge. Addy spent the week playing like a kid should.

hristmas is a time for giving, sharing and joy. However, for many families in our community, it is also a time of stress, depression and sadness when holiday dreams seem impossible. Christmas for the Kids Osceola (CFTKO), Inc., is a locally run non-profit organization made up of local businesses, governmental agencies, schools, community organizations and citizens

The Hart’s were able to not only enjoy all the theme parks in Orlando, but they spent fun-filled days on the Give Kids the World campus. Addy was able to forget about IV’s, and nebulizers, while she swam, met Elsa and Anna, rode horses, and dug into sweet treats. “Give Kids the World has given our family memories we will cherish forever” Addy’s mom Tarrah stated. “They are simply amazing; we were so sad when we had to leave!” Give Kids the World’s mission is to provide a memorable, joyful, cost-free visit to Central Florida for kids with life-threatening illnesses. We think they hit the nail on the head for the Hart family, and for a little girl who shines above her illness.

who are committed to making those impossible dreams come true for children here in our own county. The mission of CFTKO is “to reach out to local families in need by providing a gift during the holiday season. We rely on the generosity of our community to help reach the goal of fulfilling the needs of families with children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to celebrate Christmas.” Since 2009, this coalition of our community has served more than 10,000 families by providing gifts, food

vouchers and hygiene products. Every year, the goal is to provide gifts for more than 3,000 children, with the aim to also provide personal hygiene items to these same children. However, these lofty goals can only be achieved when everyone works together. Christmas for the Kids is being coordinated by Danny & Connie Quinn of Quinn Contractors. They have been involved with this organization since 2009, and feel passionately that our kids deserve to celebrate Christmas. Additionally, Osceola Woman Magazine is participating with Christmas for the Kids this year and want our readers to know that we will be accepting toy donations at any of the locations listed. One volunteer said, “In a perfect world, the number of children we serve would go down each year. However, the reality is that number will continue to rise. We need your help to give these deserving children a joyous Christmas.” There are many ways that you can help with this effort! As an individual, you can donate toys, your time, or an individual pledge at http://www.cftko.org to help purchase toys or other items for the families. No gift is too small to make a difference! If you are a small business owner, you can host a toy drive or collect toy donations at your place of business, “In a perfect world, the number of children volunteer your time or make a financial donation. we serve would go CFTKO is a 501(c)(3) down each year. P

Start Your Own INVESTMENT “TRADITIONS” | By Cleve Grissom |

Thanksgiving

is just around the corner. And like all holidays, this one has plenty of traditions, such as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (started in 1924) and football (the first broadcast Thanksgiving Day game was played between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears in 1934). Traditions are important, and you may want to establish some in one of the key activities of your own life: INVESTING.

So, what sort of investment traditions could you start? Here are a few ideas:

INVEST REGULARLY.

B

y definition, engaging in a tradition means performing the same acts over and over. This type of behavior can impose discipline and consistency to your investing. For example, consider contributing the same amount of money each month to the same investments. When the price of these investments is down, your contribution will pay for more shares – in other words, you’ll be “buying low,” one of the key principals of investing. And when the price of your investments is up, you’ll be a savvy enough investor to buy fewer shares. Over a long period, this technique can help lower the per-share price of your investments, but it does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. To make it easier to follow through, you could set up monthly, automatic purchases of these investments from your checking or savings account. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. For more information on investing your money please contact Cleve Grissom at 407-891-7833.

INCREASE 401(K) CONTRIBUTIONS WHEN YOU GET A RAISE.

W

hy not make it a tradition to boost your contributions to your 401(k) or other employersponsored plan every time your salary increases? Your 401(k) is a great way to save for retirement, as your contributions are typically made with pretax dollars, resulting in lower taxable income, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. Even if you don’t reach the contribution limit (which, in 2015, is $18,000, or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older), you can help yourself

ick one day a year – perhaps a “milestone” day, such as your birthday or wedding anniversary – to review your overall investment picture. Are your investments performing the way you had hoped? Is your portfolio properly diversified, or are there gaps you need to address? Are you investing too aggressively or too conservatively? A yearly review of your investments and long-term financial strategy, possibly with the help of a financial advisor, can help keep you on track toward your objectives. Of course, you don’t need to wait 12 months before looking over your situation; you may need to adjust your holdings during the course of any given year, in response to changes in the financial markets or your individual needs. But by committing yourself to at least one full-scale review a year, you can greatly reduce unpleasant “surprises” while staying abreast of exactly where you are and where you’re headed. On Thanksgiving, you can enjoy the holiday’s traditions, along with those that may be unique to your family. And someday, you may well be thankful that you followed some productive investment “traditions.”

In

our last issue of Osceola Woman, we explained the importance of routine oil changes and tire maintenance to extend the life of your car. These procedures are important throughout the life of your vehicle, but as you move into the next stage of your car’s life, it is important to consult your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations of additional services. Some of these may include:

spark plug replacement, fuel filter replacement, fuel injection cleaning, brake service, transmission service, replace coolant, replace coolant hoses, replace belts, and timing belt replacement. To keep your car at peak efficiency and fuel economy, new spark plugs and fuel servicing work together to enhance engine performance. Depending on driving conditions, brakes should be inspected at the very least, but may require replacement or servicing. High under
