TALK TO YOUR ADULT CHILDREN ABOUT SMART FINANCIAL MOVES | By Cleve Grissom |
If
you have children who are finishing college or embarking on their first full-time job, you obviously want them to get off to a good start in their adult and working lives; and, by virtue of your years of experience, you probably have some good advice to offer – especially when it comes to making smart financial moves.
Of course, you can find a broad array of financial topics to discuss. But if you want to concentrate on just a few, you might consider these for starters:
out that they can have money automatically invested – and since they never really “had” this money in the first place, they are less likely to miss it. They can start by deferring small amounts; when their earnings rise, they can increase their contributions.
INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE – When young
BUYING A HOME AND PAYING OFF A MORTGAGE – With interest rates still
people are paying off student loans, they may not think they can also afford to invest for the future. Indeed, this can be challenging – but it’s not impossible. So, if your children go to work for an employer that offers a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), you may want to point
low, now is not a bad time for prospective first-time homebuyers. Of course, if your children truly are starting out in the working world, it will likely take them a few years to save up enough for a down payment. But even after they reach that goal, you may want to warn them not to become “house poor” by spending a large portion of their total income on home ownership. If they do buy a house,
though, and their incomes go up as their careers progress, they may wonder if they should pay down their mortgage quicker. While they might feel good about lowering that debt, you may want to point out that an argument could be made for putting money in assets that will likely be more liquid, such as stocks and bonds. For one thing, if your children were to lose their jobs, and they needed cash to tide them over until they were once again employed, they’d likely find it much harder to get money out of their homes than their investment accounts. Also, in terms of accumulating resources for retirement, they might be better off building up their investment portfolios, rather than sinking every extra dollar into their homes.
USING CREDIT WISELY – Urge your children to avoid taking on excessive credit card debt and taking out non-essential loans. As you know, having a good credit score can pay off in several ways, including getting better rates on mortgages. You may want to risk sounding “old fashioned” by encouraging your children to live within their means. Also, consider pointing out that it’s often the people who are the most frugal today who may end up with the most money tomorrow. It’s not always easy for young people to get off on the right foot, financially speaking. But as someone who knows a thing or two about controlling debt, saving and investing, you can help your children out by imparting a few words of wisdom.
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. For more information on investing your money please contact Cleve Grissom at 407-891-7833.

FLOORS, FLOORS, FLOORS!
I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING; THIS DOESN’T SOUND LIKE A DIY PROJECT! WELL, WE’RE HERE TO SHARE A LITTLE SECRET, CONCRETE FLOORING IS IN! HOWEVER, THIS ISN’T YOUR RUN-OF-THE-MILL MAJOR SHOPPING CENTER CONCRETE FLOORING WE’RE TALKING ABOUT. THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO STRIP THE CARPET UP, AND USE THAT CONCRETE BASE, AS A NEW SHOWCASE OF DIY SUCCESS. OH, AND BY THE WAY, YOU’LL BE SHOCKED AT THE PRICE SAVINGS!
ACID WASH (We’re not talking jeans, people)
T
his is the more complicated of the concrete flooring options, as it requires some chemicals to get the job done. However, the results are fantastic, leaving you with a swirly-marble look, in almost any color of your choosing. Plus, with the wet-look top coat, you’ll be tricking people into thinking your floor is a natural stone, and not a concrete slab.
14 osceolawoman.com | MAY/JUN 2016
PAINT, AND PATTERNS
C your local home improvement store will carry many oncrete paint isn’t just for outside, anymore. Today,
options for some indoor concrete painting madness. By picking a neutral color, you can mix up colors and textures by adding new area rugs. A simple off-white can really make any colorful furniture pieces you have pop right out, too. However, if you have more of an eclectic style, we suggest checking out some flooring or wall stencils. These will allow you to add a large pattern mosaic in a spot of your choosing (i.e. entryway), a border around your walls, or even an entire floor of a room in your house. The options are endless, too. And guess what?! When you think you’re sick of one color, all you have to do is paint it over, without trying to reach any high places.
STAIN
T
oday, the geniuses of the DIY world, have come up with an easy way to make your concrete floors look natural, organic, and dynamic, with concrete stain. Behr Products, offers a Premium Floor Coating line, with plenty of colors to choose from. With 4 simple steps, you can have new floors. One gallon will cover 250-square feet, so you can do your whole house, or one room, without wasting too much product. All you need is a long weekend, and a pump sprayer. Have some fun and dye your bathroom floors a beautiful blue, while leaving the walls neutral. Check out Behr Premium Concrete Dye, on www.Behr.com

NOTHING SPRUCES UP A SPACE LIKE A FRESH COAT OF PAINT. HOWEVER, CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHADE CAN BE OVERWHELMING (WHO HAS TIME TO GO THROUGH A WHOLE WALL OF PAINT SWATCHES?!). LUCKILY FOR US, SHERWIN WILLIAMS CAN STEP IN AND ASSIST. FOR $95, AN IN-STORE DECORATOR WILL HELP STEER YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, FOR YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE! THEY EVEN HAVE SOME FABULOUS WALLPAPER CHOICES, IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO ADD A LITTLE MORE TEXTURE TO YOUR SPACE. Speaking of texture, the days of simple paint are well behind us. Today, many options from paintable wallpaper, to stickon wood planks, really help our creativity shine. Here are some of our favorite feature wall options:
WOOD PLANK WALL
P
allets or stick-on, this is a great way to add some depth and nature, to your space. TIP – You can nail laminate wood flooring to your wall. They easily stack together for a seamless look.

PAINTABLE WALLPAPER
Yes, it’s a wonderful thing! From a classic linen, to a grass cloth look, you can hang it up, then customize with your own color choice.
DIY PANEL WALLS

CABINETS
T
here is such a thing as cabinet makeovers in a box. Rust-Oleum (one of our go-to brands) offers a breakthrough Cabinet Transformation Kit, that can take those old dark cabinets to a fresh white, or some outdated 70’s cabinets to a modern, sleek feel. With a couple coats of paint, you will not recognize your old cabinets. Finish them off with some new hardware, and you’ve got yourself a new kitchen! Check out more about it, on www.Rustoleum.com.
HARDWARE AND LIGHTING UPDATES
DON’T FORGET THE DRAWER ORGANIZERS!
IF YOU’RE LACKING DRAWERS IN YOUR KITCHEN, ADD THEM INSIDE YOUR CABINETS. CHECK OUT THE REV-A-SHELF LINE AT LOWE'S, WHICH BRINGS ORGANIZATION TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL.
(that won’t break the bank)
Sometimes your home just needs a little lipstick, a.k.a. the finishing touch that you didn’t know you were missing. By adding some bling to your ceilings or cabinetry, you can really add a dynamic you didn’t know you were missing. Our favorite stores for lighting up your space: West Elm, World Market, and www.Wayfair.com. For awesome hardware choices, check out www.Overstock.com
ISLAND
T
here is no such thing as too much storage. Adding a new kitchen island, can bring your cooking space a whole new life. Our favorite easy DIY island, is actually a lot easier than you think! Head to your favorite thrift shop, and find an old bedroom dresser. Remove as many drawers as you think necessary, for large storage. Give the whole thing a coat of paint, except the top, where you will add a butcher block material (available at Home Depot) or paint a coordinating color. Add some hooks to the side and hardware to match your cabinets, and you’re done! Another fun way to do this, is to purchase some stock cabinets from your local home improvement store. There are 2-door or 3- door cabinet base options. Paint a coordinating color (or use your Rust-Oleum kit from above), and add hardware. The top is your playground. From many in-stock laminate options at your home improvement store to butcher block. Our favorite is a DIY wood-waterfall look. Once your island is in place, surround the entire piece with plank boards, we mean entire! There are several ways to get this done, with nails and brackets. We suggest bringing your dimensions and drawing ideas to your local hardware guy, for best installation ideas.
DIY BONUS– ENTERTAINMENT WALL
Y
BACKSPLASH
T
he world is your oyster! Classic subway tiles are back (did they ever leave?) but there are many other options for your kitchen backsplash, today. Here are some of our fav’s: CEILING TILES the perfect vintage look! PEBBLE TILE bring the river, indoors. LARGE FLOOR TILES for a bold look. BEAD BOARD for a country feel. BRICK for some real traditional texture.
ou can build a custom wall unit to hide those cords! Ikea has amazing wall-cabinet options, which with some DIY ingenuity, can be made into a masterpiece. We liked hanging the wall cabinets lower to the ground, then stacking stained wood board above it. Make a frame with these boards, by elevating them off the wall, and you can drag all the cords to your wall unit below. Check out how our editor did it, in her own home!

chatted with Dr. Simba Wiltz, president of the Central Florida Animal Reserve, to see what it takes to move this great organization to Osceola, and what the CFAR does to help the cats who reside there.
OW
How does the CFAR educate the public on the big cat and wildlife housed there? People are key to our education efforts. Each cat is a story with large, powerful personalities, wrapped up in a furry package. Our role is to act as active ambassadors—telling their story both through the work we do and the people we interface with.
SW
In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the new facility in Osceola County that will boast large open-air barn facilities. There will be a pond out there that will present an assortment of wildlife, plus there will most likely be a Florida Panther Call because of the location of the new facility in Osceola. We are excited for this phenomenon for the researchers, residents, and visitors.
OW
Why do these big cats end up at the CFAR? Your web-site says they would otherwise not have a home – why is that? There is no safety net for big cats—which means that when their caretakers fall on hard times, or can no longer care for them, there are very few options. Returning big cats to an ever-shrinking wild is not possible, nor can they simply be put up for adoption to any willing individual. Government agencies without options for the long-term management of big cats may have no choice but to euthanize big cats. Without state or federal funding, smaller, private entities cannot sustain additional cats. CFAR is an end-stop facility that has the experience to address the needs of big cats, as an option that does not require the death of these endangered species.
SW
OW SW
What will the CFAR bring to Osceola County? CFAR will be a key addition to Osceola’s already legendary eco-tourism attractions. At the outset, CFAR will provide a point of interest that can allow people to gain perspective and appreciation for big cats. Students of all levels
18 osceolawoman.com | MAY/JUN 2016
will be able to engage in educational opportunities through the unique prism of big cats in an outdoor learning environment. Our long-term plan sees improvements that will provide job opportunities from entry-level through professionals. And as the largest big cat site in the area—we will be a unique draw that will extend stays in the county and surrounding regions to the benefit of the local economy.
OW SW
How can residents get involved? Our organization is dependent on the financial and physical support of the community. We need individual and businesses most generous donations to maintain our existing facility and complete the new one. This spring is a great time to become a Member, which will give you access to see our residents at our next Member day May 22nd, 2016 and learn more about our future plans. At this time, all our volunteers, including myself are not paid. All of our funds raised go into the care of the large cats, food, health checks, and care and the facility. DISEASE PREVENTION FOR PUPPIES AND KITTENS
| By Dr. Gary A. Borgman |
In
the two previous issues of Osceola Woman I have discussed “Choosing a New Pet” and “Puppy and Kitten Nutrition”. Now I would like to discuss the very important topic of disease prevention for these vulnerable new pets.
Puppies and kittens are born with maternal antibodies against diseases, but it is very dependent upon the vaccination status of the mother. A properly immunized dog or cat will transfer enough antibodies against communicable diseases to protect the newborn for a few weeks. Unfortunately, this passive protection will rapidly decrease and the young puppy or kitten could become unprotected as early as three weeks, or as late as about twelve weeks of age. Our goal is to stimulate an active immune response in these young patients through a series of vaccinations beginning at six weeks of age. It is important to continue the immunizations every three weeks up until the patient is at least fifteen and preferably sixteen weeks old. This vaccination protocol will stimulate the young patient’s immunization system as soon as possible and confer protection for about one year. Twelve months after completion of the puppy or kitten series it will be time for an annual physical examination, parasite check, and booster vaccinations. We always advise pet parents of these vulnerable young puppies and kittens to act as if the patient is unprotected until completion of the vaccination series. This means house confinement and limited time outdoors. If a back yard or patio area is fenced and no dogs or cats ever come into the area, it is okay to allow the patient into this area for exercise and eliminations. A front yard and public areas should be avoided because Parvo virus and Panleukopenia virus can

These examination young patients are also highly for intestinal vulnerable to Rabies, which can parasites, and be present in feral cats, raccoons, administration of the and any other mammal. first immunizations. A first visit for a puppy will include a review of any previous veterinary care, a complete physical examination, a microscopic fecal examination for intestinal parasites, and administration of the first immunizations. We will also discuss nutrition and feeding (see previous Osceola Woman article), heartworm and external parasite prevention and housebreaking. This is also time to discuss crate training for puppies. Fortunately, kittens are much easier to “housetrain”. Providing a clean litter box, fresh water, and proper nutrition is all that is needed! Love and affection of course are needed for kittens, as well as puppies, and that is the easy part. The core recommended vaccinations for puppies are Canine Distemper, Adeno Virus, Parvo, Parinfluenza, Bordatella, Leptospirosis, and Rabies. For kittens we are vaccinating to prevent Panleukopenia, Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Leukemia virus, and Rabies. Dogs who are traveling to many states north of Florida should also be vaccinated against Lyme disease. Additionally, there is now a vaccine to prevent the newest strain of Canine Influenza and some kennels require it. So far, this new strain is not common in Florida, but it is only one state away.
The veterinarians and staff at Kissimmee Animal Hospital (407-846-3912) and Poinciana Pet Clinic (407-518-0880) are available to answer any questions you may have about recommended vaccinations or any other pet health issues. We are here to help and to serve.

THE DOCTORS ARE IN:
Your One-Stop-Shop For Pediatric Care
They’re
full of opinions, they have finicky food preferences, and they question everything; in many ways, children are like small adults. However when it comes to getting sick or more serious things like injuries, accidents, and critical care, children and adults cannot be treated the same.
Kids are different in the illnesses they get, treatments they receive and how their bodies react to them. When a child is sick or critically ill, it’s crucial to have quick access to pediatric specialists close to home. Families in South Orange and Osceola counties will now be able to access specialized pediatric care and pediatric intensive care services, thanks to Osceola Regional Medical Center’s new Pediatric Unit and Pediatric ICU – the only of its kind in Osceola County.
BIG ADVANCEMENTS FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES
The Pediatric ICU is an area of the hospital that provides sick children with the highest level of medical care for critically ill children. Starting in the summer, pediatric patients at Osceola Regional who need continuous monitoring can receive the full spectrum of care at the hospital. From Pediatric ER to Pediatrics, or if need be, Pediatric ICU. “Our pediatric team stands behind any effort to keep children close to home during their treatment and recovery,” Robert Krieger, CEO of Osceola Regional Medical Center said. “From prenatal and maternity services, to Neonatal ICU, and Pediatric ER, and now the new Pediatric ICU, we are providing our community with the full continuum pediatric of care, all in one location.”
OSCEOLA REGIONAL AND NEMOURS: A POWERHOUSE PARTNERSHIP
Pediatric ICU admission can be a traumatic experience for both pediatric patients and their parents. Parents can have peace of mind knowing their children are being cared for by top specialists in the area. Osceola Regional and Nemours Children’s Health System have joined forces to provide an even more advanced level of care. As part of the partnership, Nemours intensivists, who are doctors specializing in treating acutely ill infants, children, and adolescents, will provide on-site care in Osceola Regional’s Pediatric Unit, Pediatric ICU when it opens, the Baby Suites maternity unit nursery and Neonatal ICU for ill newborns – also the only one of its kind in Osceola County. “The intensivists will work alongside our highly skilled local pediatricians, primary care physicians, and other pediatric specialists, including those in Osceola Regional’s pediatric emergency department,” Krieger added. “Nemours is a trusted partner in our community. Together, our multidisciplinary teams will collaborate to speed up recovery times and achieve the best possible outcomes for children.” Starting June, the Nemours intensivists will provide on-site care in the new Pediatric Unit and Pediatric ICU. Nemours neonatologists will staff Osceola Regional’s Neonatal ICU and Baby Suites maternity unit’s nursery.
EXPANDING IN SIZE, GROWING IN SERVICE
The Pediatric ICU addition is just one part of a larger, $7 million expansion project at Osceola Regional. The expansion includes a state-of-the art Pediatric Department that will be located on the first floor of Osceola Regional’s recently-opened patient tower. The new 14,000-square-foot pediatric department will include eight pediatric medical/surgical beds, a sixbed PICU, and comfortable support space for the families of patients.

OBESITY ON THE MENU Obesity
is quickly becoming a national health crisis. It’s generally regarded as the single most dangerous health problem facing our population today; yet, there are few easy answers as to how to combat the ongoing epidemic. There are several factors at work, including: genetics, sedentary lifestyles, increased time urgency, and poor access to healthy foods. The widespread availability, low cost, and timely service of so called “fast foods” has made the food industry one of the targets for those trying to fight the spread of this disease. For these reasons, obesity is a problem that has recently gained increased attention.
28 osceolawoman.com | MAY/JUN 2016
The ease of access and the lack of nutritional content points to fast foods as the number one contributor to the increase in obesity cases. Thirty years ago, approximately 17% of our calories were consumed outside the home. Now, that amount has nearly doubled to more than 30%. Do you know what else doubled in that same time period? Obesity rates.* The portions sold in restaurants today are much larger and the nutritional quality of the food is much poorer. Fast food is built for speed and taste, not for nutritional value. The fast food companies say they’re just satisfying what the market demands
and, to a large extent, that’s true. The major fast food companies have turned to science to entice customers to consume. They use high fructose corn syrup in their foods - even in their meats, fries, and buns - to make the food better tasting. The quality of the food is heavy on simple carbs, the wrong kinds of fats, and is low on protein. Some of these meals have an astounding number of calories, and huge quantities of sugar and saturated fats. Fast food restaurants use the psychology of the “middle-choice” to coax customers to buy a larger sizes than normal. “Combo” meals also encourage people to buy more food,
and there’s constant pressure to up to the largest size, available. When you add in the rapid service and the low cost, it’s easy to understand why this type of food is so popular. So what can be done? Requiring establishments to post nutritional information has helped, and many companies now have some healthier choices on the menu. It is important for consumers to understand what they are putting into their bodies, and treat food as fuel. At Florida Hospital, our focus on educating our patients about the food they eat and empowering them to make healthier choices is a significant step toward a healthier lifestyle.

MAY IS SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Skin
cancer rates are skyrocketing, both in the U.S., where more than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually, and around the world. In fact, one in five Americans is diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives. It is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., with more new cases than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.
Melanoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Skin cancer is a malignant condition, which begins with the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Recent studies show it can result as an accumulative effect from sun damage (90% in the case of nonmelanoma skin cancers!). Florida’s near year-round high temperatures means we are all at a higher risk!
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKIN CANCER?
Melanoma is the most deadly of all skin cancers
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Actinic Keratoses
(It causes more than 75% of skin cancer deaths). One American dies of melanoma almost every hour. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring skin cancer. Though they are generally easily treated, BCCs tend to keep growing if untreated, and in rare cases can start to spread. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most frequently occurring skin cancer. An estimated 65% of them arise in lesions, previously diagnosed as AKs. Most are easily treated, but if not removed, some can metastasize and spread to distant tissues and organs, becoming life threatening. Actinic Keratoses (AKs) are pre-cancers that can turn into SCC if left untreated. They are often an early stage in the development of skin cancer.
EARLY DETECTION OF SKIN CANCER IS KEY!
Cure rates are high, and recurrence rates are low, for cancers that are CAUGHT AND TREATED EARLY. It is important to check for changes in size, shape, and color of pigmented areas. The Skin Cancer foundation highly recommends an annual full-body skin exam by a dermatologist. *Facts provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation and American Academy of Dermatology. The incentive program will be offered for three years. “Kissimmee has an extraordinary network of hospitals, which have recently undergone expansions and it makes great sense to capitalize on this medical synergy within our City” said Mayor Jim Swan. The Commission also welcomed a new medical company to the City. SummerPlace at Kissimmee is a 63unit senior memory care living facility that is located at the Southeast corner of Park Place Boulevard and Central Avenue. The $11 million dollar project will employee approximately 80 individuals. The District is anchored by Florida Hospital Kissimmee on the North and Osceola Medical Regional Center to the South. Orange Blossom Trail and John Young Parkway create the East and West boundaries of this new district which will be branded with new banners and the decoration of utility and traffic boxes. Visitors to the Veteran’s Memorial will have easy access to find the Fallen On-Site along with the new name for their website. The Central Florida Veterans Memorial Park Foundation, Inc. has completed a yearlong process of researching biographical information of the over 1,100 Names of the Fallen from Brevard, Lake, Osceola, Orange, Seminole and Volusia Counties who made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country. At this time, relatives and friends of the Fallen have opportunity to research names on Memorial wall on our website from their computer and their smart phone. “This World Class Veterans Memorial at Lake Nona is the only Veteran’s Memorial adjacent to and part of a VA Medical Center in the country,” said Jerry E. Pierce, Chairman of the Foundation. “It is most likely to be the first or one of the first Veterans Memorial to include online biographical information that is also mobile friendly to be able to look up information right at the memorial site.” We have great community leaders such as Dr. Neil Euliano, Carol and Harvey Massey of Massey Services, Inc., Tavistock Development Company and the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation and many others who have contributed to make the Memorial a reality. Plus, we have financial support from the following government entities that include the City of Orlando, and Lake, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, and Volusia. For more info, visit www.
