New X Series Kenwood eXcelon Amplifiers The Kenwood eXcelon X series amplifiers are being revamped this year with several improvements. Three new Kenwood eXcelon amplifiers are being introduced, including two multi-channels – the X302-4 (4 channel) and X802-5 (5 channel) – as well as a new mono-block, the X502-1.

Many enhancements for the next generation of X series amplifiers have been implemented. First, a dedicated speaker level input has been added, whereas previously, speaker level input connectivity was only supported through the RCA inputs, requiring more labor to make your own cables. Now, adding these amplifiers

to many OEM stereos is simplified with the included speaker input cable. Another new addition to these amplifiers is a remote controller input, enabling users to control the Bass channel input sensitivity from the optional KCA-RC01A remote control. The KCA-RC01A features both surface and flush mounting options for installation flexibility. Speaking of enhanced installation ease – now all terminals are on the same side, and a new sliding terminal block cover is being introduced, making for an easier and more aesthetically pleasing install.

Poll: Young Children’s Popular Tech Use Distracts from Reading, Daily Conversation National polling released last year by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Read Aloud 15 MINUTES shows that significant percentages of parents report their children’s popular technology use is routinely taking time away from reading and conversing – activities basic to fostering brain and communication development.

More than one third (34 percent) of parents polled said popular tech devices take away reading time for their child.

Twenty-six percent of parents of children ages 0-2 said this is the case; the figures increase to 37 percent and 40 percent among parents with children ages 3-5 and 6-8, respectively.

Additionally, 43 percent of parents said popular technology devices are a barrier/distraction to conversation and interaction between themselves and their children. More than half (54 percent) said they “sometimes,” “often,” or “very

often” ask their children to put down their devices in order to increase parent/child interaction. Among parents of children ages 0-2, 37 percent reported this to be the case, with boys more likely to be asked. The proportions jumped to 58 percent and 67 percent among parents with children ages 3-5 and 6-8, respectively.

But children aren’t the only tech enthusiasts: 41 percent of parents said their children sometimes (or more often) ask them to put down their devices and interact with them. About half of parents report that device use takes away from their own personal reading time.

“We know the vast majority of brain development occurs in the first 3 years of life – a foundational time for a child’s speech/language and social development,” Elise Davis-McFarland, PhD, CCC-SLP, said upon the release of the polling results, a time when she served as

Under her direction, Velodyne LiDAR hosted the inaugural World Safety Summit on Autonomous Technology in October 2018. The goal of the Summit was achieved: bringing together business, government and community leaders, and the public to address the responsible implementation of autonomous technology for advanced roadway safety.

The adoption of autonomous vehicles will help reduce the 37,000 annual roadway deaths in the U.S. – mostly due to human error. Industry experts agree, however, that the need for regulations related to the industry of vehicles and their autonomous technology must be addressed.

That is not new news to law enforcement. Captain Ceto Ortiz, Commander of the San Jose California Highway Patrol and a CHP officer for 24 years, said driverless technology has the potential to

make the CHP’s job easier by reducing or even eliminating highway deaths.

“We embrace [the technology],” he said. “The death rate has been on the rise for nearly a decade and that’s not good news. New technology can save lives, so we’re all for it.”

Education, collaboration and responsibility are essential to advance safety in the realm of autonomous vehicles.

“We are at the cusp of something that, over the next couple of decades, is going to bring this ‘Jetsons’ age to life,” Gopalan said. “We have a unique opportunity to do a lot of good. But as with all things, we have to think about it carefully and responsibly.”

Bosch and Veniam Ensure Seamless Vehicle-to-Everything Connectivity What is true for people is also true for cars: communication works best with a common language and a good connection. To enable connected and automated driving in the future, vehicles must be able to easily communicate with one another as well as with their surroundings. There is currently no globally standardized technical basis for this exchange of data, which is known as vehicle-to-everything communication, or V2X. Instead, vehicles will in the future communicate using the wide variety of different standards implemented by countries and vehicle manufacturers around the world. “Bosch is taking a multi-standard approach when it comes to V2X. We have developed a universal connectivity unit capable of communicating using all of the transmission standards implemented in connected automobiles,” says Dr. Dirk Hoheisel, Member of the Board of Management at Robert Bosch GmbH. Cars can then use the Wi-Fi networks available in cities, while elsewhere they can communicate using, for instance, cellular networks. The complex task of managing these diverse communication options is handled by a software solution from the Silicon Valley-based start-up Veniam. It continuously searches for the best transmission technology that suits the particular requirements and switches automatically between the available alternatives. The software therefore maintains continuous and seamless vehicle connectivity, ensuring cars can, for example, reliably alert one another to accidents and passengers can enjoy uninterrupted music streaming.

Equipped vehicles will be able to communicate with one another as well as with their surroundings regardless of the vehicle make or the country in which they are used. In the biggest European field trial to date (simTD, Safe Intelligent Mobility – Test Field Germany), V2X communication has proven its suitability for daily use under everyday conditions and in lab simulations. Bosch has played a significant role in this joint project. Since February 2017, Bosch, Vodafone and Huawei have been performing trials of the V2X communication with the first 5G test modules − the first companies in Europe to do so.

The A9 freeway in Bavaria north of Munich is the location for the field tests, which focus on real-time warning systems during lane changing maneuvers on the freeway or in case the vehicle in front brakes suddenly. V2X will also be able to make driver assistance functions even more comfortable, like adaptive cruise control (ACC). In the summer of 2018, Bosch tested secure, direct communication between vehicles and roadside infrastructure, cameras and sensors in Detroit.

The test showcased Wi-Fi-based DSRC technology, where equipped vehicles were provided with in-vehicle notifications about the status of traffic signals ahead and pedestrians crossing the street – functions designed to enhance safety in city traffic. ESCRYPT, a subsidiary in the Bosch Group, provided the cybersecurity technologies behind these V2X demonstrations. In China, Bosch is testing ad hoc communication using Wi-Fi as well as cellular technology. The tests are focusing on alerts that help the driver when overtaking or negotiating complex intersections.

Software ensures the best connection.

The software from Veniam is the connection enhancer for the connectivity unit from Bosch. As well as keeping an eye on which V2X communication technologies are currently available for use, the software also closely monitors the costs and data transmission latency of each alternative connection option, since not every technology is suitable in every situation.

For example, when it comes to alerting a driver to another vehicle that is about to pull out in front of them from a side street, every millisecond counts. This kind of critical information must be communicated in real time using highly reliable technology that is always ready for use – even if that means the resulting data transmission costs are greater. Software updates from the cloud or a navigation system map update, on the other hand, can be put on hold in that sort of situation until a low-cost stationary Wi-Fi network becomes available. Large volumes of data can be transmitted via Wi-Fi in a short space of time, though a downside is that public or home Wi-Fi hotspots are not always available.
