5G and the Future of Automotive IoT By Claes Herlitz, Vice President and Head of Global Automotive Services at Ericsson

Drivers can expect to see more than 380 million connected cars on the road by 2020, according to recent research (www.businessinsider.com/internet-ofthings-connected-smart-cars-2016-10). IoT continues to grow within transportation, mobility and beyond. We usually encounter IoT in the form of voice assistants, wearables or other connected devices. Many people don’t encounter the extent of IoT that proliferates specialized applications, industrial environments and other controlled or closed-off spaces. The explosion in connectivity and vehicles gives people more choice than ever for navigation, music and other integrated apps.

Beyond the familiar apps we can access across our smartphones and our smart cars, the imagination can run wild. Will we see new vehicle services? How will they work? How will changes improve our safety? The possibilities are exciting, and each day we’re finding new ways to reflect that imagination in the driving experience of tomorrow.

The Future of IoT in Cars To take the vehicle of the future from concept to reality, there are new steps we can take to advance beyond the car of today. In the future, IoT will begin to transform day-to-day activity through infotainment and telematics. Self-driving capabilities will expand beyond testing phases to tangible advantages at our fingertips. With IoT, vehicles will also continually improve with over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Attendee Message from CES 2018: Tech Industry Needs to Be More Outspoken About Popular Technology Overuse Last year, as prominent voices in the technology industry sounded alarms about overuse of popular technology, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) released the results of a survey it conducted of nearly 200 attendees at CES 2018. The survey results showed that 88 percent think it is important that more prominent industry figures speak out about tech overuse. The survey respondents work in the tech industry and appear to be strict about their own and their children’s tech use. Almost 67 percent said children should

not be allowed to have their own personal tech devices until age 10 or older – this amid a societal environment where new tablets, smartwatches and other devices are being heavily promoted for even the youngest children. Almost a third (30 percent) said children shouldn’t even use devices until age 10 or older. Of those CES respondents who are parents themselves (roughly half), 72 percent said they have prohibited technology at the dinner table, social events or similar gatherings, and 68 percent have set limits for how much time their children can use

V2V Communication the Future of Safe Driving Road safety is a very hot topic now. Many new cars come equipped with camera and radar-based warning, auto-avoid and auto-braking safety systems. Emerging technologies like Smart LED lighting for precise nighttime visibility and autonomous vehicles increasingly populating the highways are all geared towards one thing – saving lives. And the thing that powers all of these advances in road safety is technology! Scosche has long been a champion of utilizing technology developments to enable safer driving with the SAFETECH™ line of aftermarket safety products. The latest addition to the SAFETECH family is a dash camera that

operates seamlessly with the Nexar App (www.getnexar.com) and a smartphone. Working together, this smart trio empowers the driver to become part of the world’s first crowdsourced Vehicle-toVehicle (V2V) network. The Scosche Full HD WiFi Dash Cam – Powered by Nexar, when paired with your smartphone loaded with the free (for iOS and Android) app, will automatically begin recording your drive and will store important vehicular events in the Nexar Cloud. In the event of an accident, a detailed insurance report can be generated and submitted direct to your insurance company. The system also comes with 24/7 Nexar Tech Support.

Save Power and Money with ReLamp LEDs The ReLamp LEDs are available in sizes for most common fresnels. In some fixtures, the reflector should be unscrewed to make room for the LED. The ReLamp LEDs work on the same AC dimmers as halogen. The light looks just like tungsten halogen, but without the heat. It is also available in

daylight. Both have very high quality color rendering. Regardless of how it is measured, the color looks right on all faces, makeup, wardrobe – just like the tried and true halogen. For a list price under $700, the ReLamp 1K is what most have been waiting for. It’s certainly more than a

Consumer Electronics Daily News their devices. There’s also strong interest in doing more, including employing apps or other tools to help manage their kids’ tech use (70 percent said they are interested) and establishing techfree areas of their house, such as the family room or bedroom (61 percent said they are interested). When it comes to their own tech use, 86 percent of the CES attendees surveyed by ASHA said they would attend a venue, restaurant or social gathering where personal device usage is prohibited. One quarter said they employ features, apps or devices to help manage the time they spend on devices. Among parents, 55 percent said the biggest barrier to managing their children’s tech use is their own busy sched-

ule, which makes it difficult to monitor usage and/or assist in keeping kids occupied. That may be why so few (8 percent) say they “always” use tech interactively with their kids. Nevertheless, a large majority of all respondents see that the most realistic solution to preventing kids’ overuse is parental/household parameters (68 percent).

When connected to the dash cam, the app runs in the background, so you can still use your phone for other purposes. The camera begins operating automatically when you start to drive and then stops when you do. It features a capacitive-touch “event” button you can use to mark significant events and footage. The app also utilizes sensors in your phone and camera to detect and record accidents. The attractive camera design provides a high-end OEM-like aesthetic once installed in a vehicle. No professional installation is required, and detailed instructions, tools and ties are included, as well as a cable and charger. Advanced communication protocols – Bluetooth pairing of the camera and smartphone, and then WiFi connection

during the trip – provide a seamless and uninterrupted user experience. Together Scosche and Nexar make it possible for every vehicle to become a connected vehicle, contributing information that helps our highways and cities become safer for all of us. Check back on January 7th to read this article! Wireless Mirroring for Android Devices Have you ever wanted to display your phone’s screen on your in-dash car receiver? Maybe you want to enlarge the size of that video game, or simply see and hear that video with life-like sound quality? This wish now becomes a reality on a total of six new Kenwood and Kenwood eXcelon multimedia receivers with their newly added “wireless mirroring” source. Wireless mirroring with Miracast® is similar to having a wireless HDMI cable (but without the mess of cables), as it completely mirrors your phone/device’s

screen and audio onto a secondary display, with up to HD picture quality. Exactly what displays on the Android device (videos, photos, applications, home screen, etc.) displays on the Kenwood receiver, all wirelessly! Just imagine tailgating before the big game – you can see and hear the pre-game show from your Kenwood touchscreen and vehicle sound system – bringing the experience to life, not to mention being the envy of all those in sight! So how does this all work, and is your phone compatible? Compatible

Seal Shield Screen Protectors Endorsed by General Electric Clostridium difficile (C. diff) is bacteria commonly found in hospitals that transmit via touching contaminated surfaces. C. diff infection can be fatal, which is why it must be prevented at all costs. Infection prevention starts by disinfecting common touch areas, such as monitor screens. Regular methods for disinfection, such as germicidal wipes, are not recommended by electronic manufacturers because they can cause damage to the device. Bleaching the monitor screen without any protection leads the screen to become cloudy and discolored, sometimes making the monitor unreadable to healthcare professionals. General Electric (GE) searched for a solution to this problem, specifically for CARESCAPE BX50 monitor screens. After a thorough internal evaluation, it identified Seal Shield™ screen protectors as a solution. Seal Shield screen protectors not only have antimicrobial product protection, they are also resistant to harsh chemicals and able to withstand scratches. These properties allow the monitor to be wiped down while keeping the screen unharmed and its users safe. Seal Shield has performed a thorough evaluation to devise compatible

screen protectors and disinfectants to use with each GE Monitor touchscreen. Each GE Monitor touchscreen can be kept sanitary at an optimal level through the use of Seal Shield precisely cut and placed screen protectors. However, it is important to keep in mind that the issued screen protectors are verified only for the use on CARESCAPE Monitor Screens. For each monitor provided by GE, a unique Seal Screen Protector has been devised.

Grow Revenue and Increase Brand Loyalty Research shows that retailers who adopt in-store customization are seeing a 6 percent to 10 percent increase in revenue – two to three times faster than those who don’t. Because it’s compact, safe and easy to use, the Ri 100 is an ideal way to offer personalized products to customers – and create that apparel in front of them, in-store. By combining personalized products that are not available anywhere else with an engaging, unique experience that cannot be replicated online, retailers can maintain a thriving, competitive brick and mortar business in an increasingly digital economy.

Make Events More Memorable – and More Profitable Another lucrative way to promote your brand is to print t-shirts on demand at events like fundraisers, sporting func-

tions, community events, company parties and trade shows. A personalized t-shirt looks and feels like a souvenir special enough to justify the higher price tag you place on it. Plus, it is the kind of product that not only serves as a conversation piece, but is also something that customers are more likely to show off on their social media – garnering endorsement and further positive exposure of your brand.

Consortium (W3C) – the global standards body for web technologies – continues work to enable VR & AR solutions to use the Open Web Platform as a fullfledged development environment. With standards, there will be interoperability to avoid fragmentation and duplicated effort, which in turn lowers development costs. After a 2016 W3C Workshop on Web and VR & AR, where over 120 participants representing browser vendors, headset and hardware manufacturers, VR content providers, designers and distributors came together to demonstrate the

benefits that the web can bring to VR development, and a 2017 workshop focused on authoring VR content on the web, important milestones contributed to making the web platform great for VR experiences, including the availability of an experimental VR API by default in several web browsers. W3C launched the Immersive Web Working Group in September 2018 to standardize WebXR, the next generation API for immersive content that will enable both VR and AR content creators to integrate their production in web pages and web applications, widening considerably the number of

37

users who can view and interact with their content. Industry experts from companies including W3C members Magic Leap, Microsoft, Letsee, Mozilla, Google, Samsung, Adobe, Facebook/Oculus, Huawei and Alibaba help bring high-performance Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) (collectively known as XR) to the open web via APIs to interact with XR devices and sensors in browsers. The group intends to deliver a public draft of the WebXR specification around the time of CES 2019. For more information about W3C’s immersive web activities, email w3t-pr@w3.org.

Smart Battery for Electric Cars, Bikes, Robots & Smartphones Powers on Even When Cell Fails The standard multi-cell battery has had a critical makeover: No longer will the battery fail if a cell fails. CEA’s Sigma Cells battery can power products ranging from laptops to electric vehicles and is the world’s first three-in-one battery solution with integrated inverter, charging and batterymanagement functions. This revolutionary technology serves as the battery’s

brain, governing the smart use of battery cells. If a cell is about to fail, Sigma Cells finds an alternative pathway, activating the “best” cells and, in the process, preventing downtime. The innovative battery-management system (BMS) architecture and operating mode deliver the inverter and charging functions by default. In addition to freeing up space in the vehicle, the position

Thinking Small on the Subject of DAS DAS has become one of the hottest buzzwords in the CRE property technology ecosystem. DAS, short for Distributed Antenna System, is a system of radios and antennas that distributes cellular signals within a building. It’s commonly used in any space or venue where demand for cellular capacity and connectivity is high and the macro cell tower is not able to deliver one or both. Building owners are increasingly turning to technology to enhance their property’s connectivity score, not to mention creating more efficient, less

expensive to operate buildings. DAS are seen as an easy path for the property owner to do both. “Today’s DAS solutions can leverage a building’s existing Small Cable Infrastructure,” says Timothy Moynihan of SOLiD. Fiber optic cable, twisted pair and low voltage power networks are used extensively in construction today. Moving forward, a DAS that can simply be added to a building’s existing infrastructure strategy is a perfect way to ensure tenants are connected and happy and can provide a building with a robust IoT access net-

Consumer Electronics Daily News of the batteries is flexible. Because the system operates with traditional grid voltage, any standard electrical outlet in any region of the world can be used for charging. The CEA team revisited traditional battery architectures to create a multi-cell power supply, and deliver enhanced performance by all three main functions: switching, charging and battery management. The integrated charger and bidirectional system enable fast charging directly off the grid at no additional cost. The battery lifespan is increased by 15 percent. “Electric-powered transportation is booming, but the industry must solve sev-

eral battery-management challenges,” said Philippe Despesse, Senior Engineer at CEA-Leti. “Currently, if one cell in a battery pack fails, it generates a fault on the whole pack. At best, this puts the battery pack out of service until it can be repaired. At worst, the battery is discarded. CEAswitched-cell technology will revolutionize batteries by lengthening their lifespans and reducing weight and size.” In addition to powering small electronic devices, Sigma Cells smart-battery technology meets the requirements of rapidly growing electric-mobility markets: electric bikes, cars, buses and boats. Production is slated to begin in September 2019.

highly efficient. The number of entries each year is astonishing because we are giving people the home of their dreams.

CEDN: What are the benefits of partnering with Discovery for HGTV Smart Home 2019?

AG: The biggest benefit is an increase in brand awareness. We work with sponsors who are endemic to the home and design category and are able to integrate their products directly into the home and feature them throughout the build and beyond. For example, viewers can go to HGTV.com right now and shop the prodSECURAM (Cont’d. from p. 1)

electronics market.

CEDN: Why is it important for manufacturers to leak test their parts?

DL: Leak testing can be applied to thousands of applications in any manufacturing industry with varying degrees of consequences. A leaky bottle cap, faucet or gas tank is an inconvenience, but a pacemaker that allows water in can have dire effects.

A developer kit for the module is available and provides tools and technologies for developers and OEMs to rapidly and efficiently develop a potentially limitless variety of custom designed fingerprint biometric products. These tools include SecuGen’s fingerprint algorithm SDK as well as the OpenSSL cryptographic libraries for additional security enhancement. “Bluetooth connectivity opens the Murata (Cont’d. from p. 4)

ucts featured in last year’s Smart Home, so the benefits really extend beyond the TV special and consumers are able to interact with brands directly. The combination of the digital elements, of which there are many, and the TV specials give sponsors a dual platform advantage. And while lifts in brand awareness, favorability and consideration were demonstrated among those who consumed HGTV Smart Home online or on-air, those exposed to the campaign via digital and TV revealed the most significant increases. We also create custom content for sponsors as part of the program that they can then use on their own platforms. Finally, when people enter to win, and they are able to do so two times a day,

they are given the option to receive information from participating brands. So, we are giving sponsors direct leads to consumers that are converted into sales. And it works.

CEDN: How has HGTV Smart Home evolved?

AG: Obviously, as advancements in smart technology has evolved, so has HGTV Smart Home. But what I find to be incredible is how the program has continued to grow. The HGTV Smart Home began 11 years ago as HGTV Green Home. It was re-branded to Smart Home in 2013 and has continued to evolve and innovate

since. More than 95 million people entered to win HGTV Smart Home 2018, compared to 87 million in 2017. In 2018, we generated 22 million video views across digital, social and video platforms and 3.7 million viewers. We are able to generate these amazing numbers because we are constantly targeting new audiences. We market directly to consumers who have not engaged with our past sweepstakes. In doing so, we are creating a new consumer base for our sponsors, while introducing new audiences into the HGTV franchise as a whole.
