Pompeian Pitches in to Help Clean Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Maryland-based Pompeian Inc., the largest U.S. brand of olive oil, best-selling wine vinegars and cooking sprays, announced a partnership to help clean Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and East Baltimore communities. Farmer owned and operated in Baltimore since 1906, Pompeian is teaming with Healthy Harbor, an initiative of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, to adopt two autonomous trash interceptors for one year. The funding will collect and remove an estimated 250 tons of trash and debris from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. In addition, Pompeian has pledged $25,000 to support a Community Cleanup and Beautification grants program. When the partnership was announced in late July, the trash interceptors, called Mr. Trash Wheel and Professor Trash Wheel, were lit up in green at night and given new sets of eyes in Pompeian’s signature green, complete with spinning olive branches. “We are grateful to Pompeian for their commitment to Baltimore – and their support in keeping the trash wheels churning,” said Adam Lindquist, director of the Healthy Harbor Initiative for the Waterfront Partnership. “With Pompeian’s support, we are able to build upon our longstanding commitment to the communities in East Baltimore by helping to bring creative, community-led projects to life that will beautify neighborhoods and improve water quality.” The grants program, launched in the spring, has started to provide grants of $1,000 to $5,000 to community members. The first finished project brought improvements to a green schoolyard, with updates including a composter, additional native plants and a rain barrel. Three additional projects – an alley makeover, a community cleanup and live concert series and a youth-led cleaning and greening initiative – are in progress with others being reviewed. 4

Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. The grants program will expand beyond financial awards and will seek to engage environmental stewards in the East Baltimore community through assistance with implementation of greening projects, grant workshops and boating tours of Baltimore’s waterfront. “Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is the heart of our community, and since 1906, the gateway for the farmer crafted olive oils we bring to Americans from around the world,” said Mattan Sharvit, corporate social responsibility manager at Pompeian. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore and have the opportunity to support the cleanup efforts of the harbor that enables us to continue our mission of helping people Eat and Live Well.” As part of the partnership, employees from Pompeian’s Baltimore headquarters are being encouraged to volunteer and participate in the restoration of the Inner Harbor. Volunteer opportunities include oyster gardening, community cleanups and walking and boating tours to learn about the environmental history and day-to-day work that goes into restoring the health of the harbor. A community contest was held, encouraging residents to take selfies and tag Mr. Trash Wheel and Pompeian on social media for a chance to win a prize pack of Mr. Trash Wheel merchandise and Pompeian products. Pompeian has been an active member in giving back to its Baltimore community since its beginnings. Through its Olive Branch Project, the company has made an impact on the community by providing education, clothing and food donations, as well as scholarships for employees’ families. The company’s visitor center opened in 2017 and has hosted hundreds of visitors for educational events for local schools and community groups. GN

California Olive Ranch Working on Environmental, Sustainability and Labeling Initiatives BY A.J. FLICK

As 2021 arrived, California Olive Ranch, the largest producer of U.S.-made extra virgin olive oil, announced a bold series of initiatives from planting two million olive trees to label transparency. Nine months later, CEO Michael Fox said the multiyear project is going well. “We believe it’s a huge opportunity to benefit the environment and benefit the trees,” he said. “It’s a win-win situation. Healthy soils make healthy trees that make healthy fruit. It makes everything better all around because olive oil is one of the – if not the – healthiest cooking oils.” Born in Tucson, Arizona, Fox moved 6

with his family around the world growing up. Ironically, his native town banned the planting of olive trees in the mid 1980s due to the allergens they produce. Fox brought 15 years of CPG experience with him to Chico-based California Olive Ranch when he came on board in August of 2019 from J.R. Watkins. Already, two million more olive trees are growing in California soil, on their way to producing fruit in four years or so, Fox said, despite the effects of climate change on the Golden State. “This year was hard,” he said. “We’re in the worst drought in 100 years. We didn’t go as far as we planned, but we’ll try again

next year.” Olive trees are hardy crops that don’t require as much water as others, Fox explained. “We use significantly less water than crops like lettuce, tomatoes as well as almonds, anywhere from three to five acre feet of water to our range, which for most olives is one or 1½ acre feet,” said Fox. “When you think about greenhouse gas emissions especially, it’s one of the loweremitting products,” he added. “It’s a very efficient crop here in the states for carbon benefits. “It’s a great crop, even though we’re having a rough go with nature in California. www.gourmetnews.com

With the climate changing, we are continuing to look at whether this is cyclical or is it the new normal and then we’ll be having to adjust our practices to maximize our yield.”

California Olive Ranch uses 13 species of cover crops, such as oat and mustard, to help bacteria thrive in the soil and pull carbon from the air, Fox said. “Organics is going well,” he said. “It’s been an interesting thing having animals let in across the groves to help manage the cover crop. In traditional regenerative agriculture, they use cattle. We’ve had sheep and that’s been interesting for us.” California Olive Ranch also uses its own recipe for compost and prioritizes trimming the trees, both of which help not only manage water resources but increase the efficiency of tree growth so they don’t need more water. “This is an important year to manage water effectively,” he said. “We’re investing in canopy management and fertilizing management, creating compost from trimmings and hedge trees so sunlight can penetrate through. “It’s exciting to have an initiative for practices to create a virtuous circle of production,” he said. Production of olive oil results in leftover pumice and skins. While California Olive Ranch sells much of the leftovers to dairy farmers, the rest is reapplied to the acres of olive trees. California Olive Ranch’s initiatives include sharing information about the olives, the oil and the people who grow the olives, Fox said. “Sustainability sharing with consumers helps them understand that what’s good for us is also good for the environment,” he said. “Consumers care about this.” Consumers are getting used to scanning products or menus for more information, he noted. The new California www.gourmetnews.com

Olive Oil labels will include a QR code that contains everything from the benefits of olive oil to recipes to explaining the oil’s heat point. “We’re looking at all the ways to use olive oil and share that with them,” Fox said. “We get real excited about all the applications of looking at healthier cooking oils than the traditional oils like canola.” And, in a year when California lawmakers and the olive oil industry generated heat with a controversial proposed bill on labeling, Fox said the California Olive Ranch labels will show consumers the percentage of the oils from various places. While the company produces oils using olives grown only in California, it also has blends that use imported olives. “Eventually, we’re going to show grower profiles on the labels,” Fox said, adding he expects that expansion during phase two of the project in 2022. In addition to its own groves, California Olive Ranch works with other California farmers to harvest more than three million

trees. Often the 50 or so family farmers who work with California Olive Ranch grow other crops, such as grapes, almonds, walnuts and rice. In the midst of many changes, Fox gets animated talking about California Olive Ranch’s other innovative offerings, including launching oils in aluminum bottles as well as producing a 100 percent olive oil spray – one of the first using California olive oil, an olive oil/walnut blend and an avocado/olive oil blend. “Avocado oil doesn’t have the phenol content and this oil provides the benefits of both oils,” he said. “We’re looking at triblends as well,” Fox said. Many consumers want the 100 percent oils and are willing to pay a higher price, but others want a quality blend at a good price point. “Flavored oils have the diversity that consumers are looking for in one brand,” he said. Consumers who trust a company’s transparency will pay for the brand. “And consumers appreciate that we’re thinking about them.” GN

Global Olive Oil Market Seen to Reach Nearly $18B by 2027 The global olive oil market is expected to more than double by 2027, at $17.73, up from $8.28 billion in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.49 percent from 2020 to 2027, according to a new report. Extra virgin olive oil is the premier quality olive oil used by a majority of healthconscious consumers, according to the report on www.researchandmarkets.com. Based on end-user, retail and foodservice contributes the lion’s share to the total olive oil market value. Demand for olive oil driving the market centers on its healthy properties from nutritional value to cosmetics, according to the report.

“Olive oil forms a different and tasty substitute to conventional edible oils,” according to a press release from www.researchandmarkets.com. “Considering its nutritional value and taste, olive oil is being consumed by a huge pool of the global population. It is extensively preferred for its properties to prevent heart diseases by maintaining cholesterol levels in the body. “It also has moisturizing and exfoliating properties, which leads to its usage in different pharmaceuticals and cosmetics products,” the press release stated. “Olive oil offers various applications such as spray for dressing, cosmetics and personal care, uses in foods and medi-

cines. Owing to these factors, there is a vast demand for olive oil in the market.” The report predicts that Europe and Asia Pacific foodservice sectors will lead the market for olive oil producers in the next few years. The European Union is the leading producer, exporter and consumer of olives, according to the report, due to olive farming, an essential business thanks to the popular Mediterranean diet. Greece, Spain, and Italy are the primary producers and exporters. Italy is one of the leading importers, largely olives from the United States, China, Brazil, Japan and Turkey. GN

McEvoy Ranch Launches Ginger Turmeric Olive Oil McEnvoy Ranch recently announced the launch of its inaugural estate-produced Ginger Turmeric Olive Oil, milled using the Agrumato method and featuring turmeric and locally grown ginger combined with organic, estate-grown olives. McEvoy calls the small batch the golden unicorn of its collection. The oil is available online or in person at McEvoy Ranch in Petaluma, California. McEvoy describes the oil as “intensely bright and extremely fresh, this oil’s balanced flavors produce a spicy, earthy, triple-health tonic.”

The company suggests drizzling the oil over grilled salmon, used as a base for a fresh dressing, or adding a drop or two into a morning smoothie or coffee for an added boost of health benefits and flavor. For more than 30 years, McEvoy Ranch has made high-quality, award-winning estate olive oils, small lot wines and culinary products. Located 30 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the rolling hills of Petaluma, McEvoy Ranch is a 550-acre working, organic ranch, committed to good land stewardship and sustainable

farming practices. An oasis in its own right, the ranch is home to 57 acres of Tuscan olive trees nestled among natural ponds, hiking trails, coastal fog and native wildlife. GN

awarded No. 1 in the world’s healthiest olive oil competition,” Peter Liokareas said in a press release. “At Liokareas Olive Oil, our vision has always been to produce the best olive oil that our consumers can get their hands on. “In the olive oil industry, the health and wellness associated with polyphenols in

Wildgood Debuts Frozen Dessert Made with Olive Oil After a successful grocery store rollout in select stores this spring, Vermont-based Wildgood began shipping its novel nondairy frozen dessert made with extra virgin olive oil in the continental United States. Wildgood was launched in select stores in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region earlier in the spring, according to a press release. Based on its success, the company decided to launch the product nationally. After harvesting and pressing in Greece, the super-premium olive oil used in Wildgood is sent to the United States, where filtered water, plant-based proteins and fibers and premium ingredients such as organic coffee, fresh pistachios and Alphonso mango are churned to create the finished product. The result is a light, simple, flavorful and creamy nondairy frozen dessert. Wildgood uses no alternative milks, just extra virgin olive oil, and a handful of

easy-to-read plant-based ingredients. Lower in calories and saturated fat than ice cream, the line features eight flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla Bean, Coffee, Mango, Pistachio, Chocolate Hazelnut, Sea Salt

Caramel and Mint Chocolate Chip. Each flavor is made with vegan ingredients and contains less than 2g of saturated fat per serving. Greek artisanal ice cream maker and Wildgood founder Sotiris Tsichlopoulos,

who also founded one of the most beloved ice cream brands in Athens, crafted the frozen treat with a single goal. “It’s been my mission to share a plant-based ice cream that would win over even the most discerning ice cream connoisseur,” Tsichlopoulos said. “I created Wildgood to deliver the deliciousness of premium ice cream without compromising taste and texture.” Using olives pressed at his family’s ancient groves in Greece, Tsichlopoulos spent eight years perfecting his replacement for ice cream. Tsichlopoulos believes extra virgin olive oil is the perfect starting point for a plant-based ice cream that will fit seamlessly into a naturally healthier, happier, and more sustainable way of life. Wildgood is priced at $9 per pint, plus tax and shipping, online and is available at select grocery stores in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic including Wegmans, Whole Foods, ShopRite, Stop & Shop and Harris Teeter. Zakarian, Genova Tuna Team Up to Promote Mediterranean Tastes To promote the variety of tastes in Mediterranean cuisine, celebrity Chef Geoffrey Zakarian and Genova Premium Tuna joined forces this spring by offering complimentary meal kits featuring flavors from the shores of Spain, coasts of Italy and beaches of Greece. By visiting Genova’s website in May, consumers could claim a free meal kit, with portioned ingredients and easy-to-follow directions, delivered to their door. The kits included Zakarian’s Genova Premium Tuna Pasta Salad with Arugula Pesto and Dates. The simple and flavorful dish featured traditional Mediterranean ingredients including dates, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil. “I know many of us have missed being able to travel internationally and experience the sights, sounds, and, most importantly, the tastes of the world, which is www.gourmetnews.com

why I was excited to partner with Genova Premium Tuna to help home cooks ‘travel through food’ with our custom Mediterranean-inspired meal kit,” said Zakarian in a press release. The Mediterranean Diet, which takes inspiration from eating habits in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, has many health benefits, including improved weight loss and reduced risk for certain diseases, according to the press release. For home cooks wanting to add some Mediterranean flair to their everyday cooking, Zakarian said one key is keeping some pantry staples on hand. While there’s no single definition of the Mediterranean

Diet, it is high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil and seafood. Keeping the pantry stocked with canned goods such as beans and fish will help add Mediterranean flavor at any time, he said in a press release. Again, seafood is a primary ingredient. It’s not your grandma’s tuna salad when you use tuna packed in extra virgin olive oil, which means you can cut down on the mayonnaise, the celebrity chef and restaurateur said. Tuna is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, he added, and the olive oil lends the Mediterranean flavor. GN Gourmet News • Oli e Aceti

Strength Genesis Promotes Macadamia Nut Cooking Oil Health enthusiasts and foodies have embraced macadamia nut oil for its health benefits, taste and higher smoke point, according to Strength Genesis, which has been importing and bottling macadamia nut oil since early 2019. Macadamia nut oil has a much higher smoke point, 515 degrees Fahrenheit, when compared to both olive oil and butter, according to

a press release. The smoke point, or burning point, can change the properties of oil from being very healthy and high in omega3 good fats, to carcinogenic and dangerous. As for flavor, macadamia nut oil has a natural buttery taste often preferred when cooking meat, eggs and vegetables, according to the company. “Macadamia oil is packed with antioxidants, which are known to help neutralize free radicals. This can support a healthier heart and may reduce the risk of diabetes,” Strength Genesis founder Derek Alessi, Ph.D, said in the press release. “In addition, macadamia nut oil has high levels of flavonoid, a powerful antiox-

idant that may reduce inflammation and support lower cholesterol levels. Lastly, its profile of heart healthy fats is 17 times greater than olive oil.” All of Strength Genesis’s products are ethically sourced from high-quality ingredients, including New Zealand Grass Fed Protein, Icelandic Cold-processed Omega3 Fish Oil and Delicious Living’s awardwinning 100% Australian Cold-pressed Macadamia Nut Oil. All products are packaged in either glass or metal containers. The company has eliminated use of unnecessary styrofoam, mylar and plastic in containers, shipper boxes and master cartons. GN

Original Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Seeks to Establish Itself in U.S. Market The Original Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, Aceto Balsamico di Modena, whose history dates back to Roman times, honors its heritage by continuing to bring the flavors of the Modena and Reggio Emilia provinces in northern Italy to kitchens worldwide. In 1993, The Consortium of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena was founded in order to protect and educate the world on this proud ambassador of its home territory. The project Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, the Original, focused on the U.S. market and financed by the European Union, promotes the added value of the product in terms of authenticity, safety, traceability and labeling guaranteed by the European trademark protection. The project seeks to enhance the competitiveness of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena in the United States. Made from grape must that is cooked or concentrated and combined with wine vinegar, a practice held over from ancient Romans, the Original Balsamic Vinegar of Modena was officially acknowledged in 2009 by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication. In Roman days, the so-called sapum was used as a medicinal product and in the kitchen as a sweetener and condiment, ac10

cording to a press release from Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. As far back as the 11th century, production of this particular vinegar was linked to Modena. Over time, it would become synonymous with the culture and history of a territory known for its pedoclimatic characteristics, as well as human knowledge and talent. The PGI certification guarantees that the original, certified Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is made from grape must from seven specific Italian vines: Lambrusco, Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Albana, Ancellotta, Fortana and Montuni. The product is matured for a minimum of 60 days – counted from the moment in which the grape must, wine vinegar and 10-year-aged wine vinegar are mixed, following the recipes carefully kept and handed down by the producers, sent to processing and transferred into wooden casks and barrels. The product that rests in barrels for at least three years is labeled

as “aged.” Afterward comes a rigorous chemical and sensory analysis, which certifies the product as either Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP or Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP Aged. As required, the packaging must bear the words “Aceto Balsamico di Modena,” along with the Protected Geographical Indication. Producers associated with the Protection Consortium are permitted to display the Consortium logo on the label. Centuries upon centuries of tradition and attention to detail has resulted in a product of great versatility, able to harmonize and balance a wide variety of ingredients and preparations. Present on tables all over the world, in the kitchens of Michelin-starred chefs and those who every day seek taste and simplicity, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena remains one of the most important agri-food products of the European Union. This olive variety is grown in the lands surrounding Castelvetrano town in Sicily, where the gentle Mediterranean breezes offer perfect conditions for the vigorous growth of strong olive trees. Paesana respects that perfection requires patience, which

is why these olives are aged naturally. After these tender morsels reach that intense green color and are fully ripened, they are hand picked, arranged with care and processed within 24 hours of the harvest. Finally, Paesana takes that extra step to earn the coveted USDA Organic seal on the label, which customers are looking for. L&S Packing Company 631.845.1717 www.paesana.com
