Choosing the Right Phantom for High-Speed Acquisition The Phantom v2640 Onyx and VEO4K from Vision Research open up new possibilities for high-speed video capture. The v2640 is the fastest 2K camera on the market, reaching frame rates over 12,000 fps at HD resolution. It’s a significantly larger camera than the Flex4K, with more RAM available – this is because higher frame rates inevitably mean larger file sizes. This also means planning for the on-set workflow is more critical than ever with this camera. It uses the same CineMag media as the Flex4K, and also has 10Gb Ethernet built into the

camera body for added flexibility with the on-set workflow. The VEO4K is on the other side of the scale, a smaller camera that provides the same image and frame rate performance as the Flex4K (4K at 1000fps), but at 1/3 of the size and half of the weight. This makes it a great option for remote operation and portable rigs, including UAV, underwater and lightweight motion control arms. Footage from VEO cameras can be downloaded to an industry standard CFast card, saving money and simplify-

input, and terminal block contacts for triggering EAS messages. What are the noteworthy improvements, you ask? There are now 64 SPTS IP outputs that can be enabled, regardless of any other configuration on the unit, for example, if EAS is enabled or disabled, or if Muxing is being used. The modulator is still eight channel, but it is now fully-agile, so you can place any of the eight channels anywhere within the cable spectrum; there are no longer adjacent-channel limitations. There is now a 2:1 multiplex mode

that will tune eight ATSC channels, and Mux them automatically into four QAM channels. There is a ninth tuner input that is shared across all eight channels with an internal amplifier and splitter to conveniently connect the unit with a single coax, if all eight tuners come from the same antenna or cable feed. Every tuner can choose to use the shared input or its own individual input, so four tuners could share one port, and the other four could have individual coax inputs.

mitter line, featuring the latest broadband high-efficiency type 888E series transistor. Also being showcased is the Digital Processor Enhanced 3 (DPE3), which is a 1RU chassis that can fit inside anyone’s transmitter and provide hourly ID, content even if the STL fails, backup PSIP generation and direct EAS input. This product is a must-have for stations that do not want to go off the air because of an unreliable STL. It provides an extra layer of protection so stations will never have to lose a viewer due to loss of signal. Anywave customers were originally LPTV and translator stations in North America, but with its proven Granite Series Air cooled transmitters (up to 10kW) and its new Magma liquid-cooled transmitter available up to 150kW, stations looking for the latest state-of-theart system at great prices and unparalleled support will be interested in Anywave. Priestley adds, “Typically no one can

compete with our efficient manufacturing processes. This allows our prices to be exceedingly competitive, making our value and ROI unbeatable.” Anywave’s products provide exceptionally efficient broadband equipment. This reduces the power and HVAC costs significantly while allowing a station to change the channel at no additional cost. Stations can purchase a new transmitter even before they are required to do so by the FCC repack, saving money in power bills and service costs while creating increased reliability. When the time comes to change channel, there will be no further costs. It is a win-win-win: save money now, save money later, never risk the bottom line.

zone selection and event detection, privacy zone and digital noise reduction that result in clearer video images. Scosche’s MagicMount Charge 3 Vent: Cooler by Design Wireless charging is the new normal, with several new Qi-enabled phone models recently joining Apple and Samsung. Its popularity is understandable. It’s now faster – supporting Apple and Samsung Fast Charge. It’s convenient, and the positive effect of fewer cables in your car, home, office and the environment cannot be ignored. While there are many options to choose from when it comes to picking a wireless charger, the latest addition to the Scosche MagicMount line-up stands head and shoulders above the rest, thanks to its distinct design and unique functional advantages. First of all, it’s available in a vent mount. Vent mounts are popular because they’re quick and easy to install, remove and transfer from vehicle to vehicle. But up until now they’ve had one major drawback – they block the airflow

from your vehicle’s vent. On a particularly hot or cold day, that’s a big problem. You need to see and access your phone, but you need that vent to be doing its job of warming or cooling you! The Scosche designers took the challenge onboard and created an elegant and adaptable solution – the MagicMount Charge 3 Vent. With a unique open, balanced, ringed design and a swing-arm that allows unimpeded air-flow from a vehicle’s vent, this Qicharging mount also provides maximum device visibility and maneuverability. The charging head independently rotates 360 degrees, free of cables and other impediments, so the device can be viewed from any angle. Certified by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the charger delivers up to 10 watts of charge, supporting

All Agree: Safety is Top Priority Marta Hall, President of Velodyne LiDAR, Inc., is passionate about a very important cause: to increase understanding of the safety benefits that can be achieved with autonomous vehicles. Under her direction, Velodyne LiDAR hosted the inaugural World Safety Summit on Autonomous Technology in October 2018. The goal of the Summit was achieved: bringing together business, government and community leaders, and the public to address the responsible implementation of autonomous technology for advanced roadway safety. “At Velodyne, safety has been a concern of ours since the day we opened our doors 12 years ago,” she said. “We’re at a pivotal moment in the history of transportation. The good part is we can save lives. The difficult part is the way it’s

rolled out.” Underscoring the importance of safety is Velodyne Chief Technology Officer, Anand Gopalan, who noted, “Not only are we learning more about what it takes to improve safety by leveraging these technologies, but we’re also learning how to deploy this technology safely. We’re creating a space for people to do that and to collaborate in a noncompetitive manner.” Weighing in on the topic of safety was Christopher A. Hart, former Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), who is a big believer in autonomous technology and safety. “I’m not going to say that in two or three years you’re going to see large amounts of driverless cars, but it’s com-

CUB Safety Introduction In this day and age, safety is one of the most used buzzwords in the world, regardless of industry, profession or region. Safety is an important part of everyone’s life from waking up and not slipping in the shower, to the commute home and not getting in an accident. But what does it mean when we talk about it in the circles of consumer electronics, automotive, transportation and recreation? Who is responsible for the safeguarding of lives and our well-being? What is it that we can do to improve our chances to be safe, reducing the overall risk we take in daily activities? We’ll explore this with CUB, a manufacturer that designs and manufactures radarbased safety equipment. Hanwha Techwin (Cont’d. from p. 8)

The all-in-one security systems provide 4K, 3840p recording for smooth playback and clear imaging, while highquality resolution enables better forensic inspection of a person’s face or license plate. With motion zone selec-

CUB is a Taiwan-based company established in 1979 and has now grown to have a global footprint including manufacturing in Taiwan and China, along with offices in the United States. “CUB has three primary pillars of business, electromechanical parts, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) solutions and radar safety products,” states Eric Ho, CUB’s Director of ADAS Development. “The radar safety product division is our newest addition to product portfolio beginning in 2016.” However, the team of experts brings decades of experience to the table with qualified personnel holding doctorate degrees, seasoned automotive experts and proven business professionals. New from CUB tion and event detection, users can select desired areas to detect motion and avoid false alarms that may trigger the system. Apple and Samsung Fast Charge. It provides the extra safety protection of Foreign Object Detection, which prevents charging if something other than a Qi-enabled device is placed on the charging head. An LED light ring surrounding the charging head turns red if a foreign object is detected. Under normal power/charging conditions, the ambient light sensing LED ring glows a soft blue. When held in place by the MagicMount’s floating 100 percent device-safe neodymium magnets, a thermal management gap is created between the phone and the Qi-charging head. This gap allows heated air to escape and be replaced by cooler air so that the device stays cooler during charging. Cooler charging is safer for the life of the battery as well as the device itself. Using the articulation of the swing arm, you can easily position the charger (and your

device) in front of the AC vent airflow if you want additional cooling of the phone. Or, during the winter months, you can swing the charging head away from the heated airflow from your vents. With the quality you’ve come to expect from Scosche, the charger is built from premium materials, including high-impact polycarbonate, resulting in a mount that enhances any vehicle’s interior. Advanced design techniques, including a 360-degree articulating rotating swing-arm and the 360degree rotating charging head, allow for a wider range of customizable viewing positions, as well as a smoother tactile experience for the user as they move them. The Scosche MagicMount Charge 3 Vent truly represents the next evolution of wireless charging.

ing,” he said. “We need to continue testing vehicles on the streets to make sure that’s exactly where they will be reliable when deployed. The sharing of information and the collaboration between all stakeholders is of the utmost importance.” The adoption of autonomous vehicles will help reduce the 37,000 annual roadway deaths in the U.S. – mostly due to human error. Industry experts agree, however, that the need for regulations related to the industry of vehicles and their autonomous technology must be addressed. That is not new news to law enforcement. Captain Ceto Ortiz, Commander of the San Jose California Highway Patrol and a CHP officer for 24 years, said dri-

verless technology has the potential to make the CHP’s job easier by reducing or even eliminating highway deaths. “We embrace [the technology],” he said. “The death rate has been on the rise for nearly a decade and that’s not good news. New technology can save lives, so we’re all for it.” Education, collaboration and responsibility are essential to advance safety in the realm of autonomous vehicles. “We are at the cusp of something that, over the next couple of decades, is going to bring this ‘Jetsons’ age to life,” Gopalan said. “We have a unique opportunity to do a lot of good. But as with all things, we have to think about it carefully and responsibly.”

includes a plethora of safety solutions ranging from your basic Universal Blind Spot Detection (BSD) kit for passenger vehicles, to a high-resolution Pedestrian Detection System for school buses and everything in between. BSD systems are becoming mainstream and an available feature on many cars and trucks – nearly every model offers it in some way, shape or form. However, it is yet to be standard across all trim levels. CUB offers in-bumper sensors for passenger cars, replacement integrated tail lamps for pick-up trucks and custom mounts for specialty applications such as motorcycles and recreational vehicles (RV). BSD systems help drivers look over their shoulder when they’re not. With LED indicators and audible alarms, drivers are that much safer with

an extra set of eyes right where they need them. Specialty applications such pedestrian detection and traffic awareness are also a part of the CUB portfolio with 77Ghz radar products. CUB recently introduced a pedestrian detection system to monitor the danger zones around school buses, keeping children and adults safe during the loading and unloading process, which is the most dangerous time. And to keep our first responders and workers safe, CUB has developed a traffic awareness product which watches traffic and warns the police, refuse workers, road workers and the like before they are struck by passing traffic.

Customizable Touchscreen Display Who’s in charge? You! That’s right, Kenwood is introducing a new user customization feature, touted as the “customizable multi-widget,” to six of its new Kenwood and Kenwood eXcelon line of multimedia receivers. Now, the choice is yours! Widgets were first introduced in 2016 to Kenwood’s “S” series of multimedia receivers, allowing for user selectable displays on the home screen, such as a clock/date, visual EQ, compass and more, with enhancements added each

year since. What’s interesting about many of these widgets is that you can touch the widget to be taken to the corresponding screen’s settings or function (visual EQ will display the actual EQ adjustment menu, compass will display the Garmin navigation map on DNX models, etc.). On DNX Garmin navigation models, the compass will actually morph into turn-by-turn lane guidance during an active route. Users can now choose exactly what they want displayed on their Kenwood

5G and the Future of Automotive IoT

By Claes Herlitz, Vice President and Head of Global Automotive Services at Ericsson

Drivers can expect to see more than 380 million connected cars on the road by 2020, according to recent research (www .businessinsider.com/internet-of-thingsconnected-smart-cars-2016-10). IoT continues to grow within transportation, mobility and beyond. We usually encounter IoT in the form of voice assistants, wearables or other connected devices. Many people don’t encounter the extent of IoT that proliferates specialized applications, industrial environments and other controlled or closed-off spaces. The explosion in connectivity and vehicles gives people more choice than ever for navigation, music and

other integrated apps. Beyond the familiar apps we can access across our smartphones and our smart cars, the imagination can run wild. Will we see new vehicle services? How will they work? How will changes improve our safety? The possibilities are exciting, and each day we’re finding new ways to reflect that imagination in the driving experience of tomorrow.

The Future of IoT in Cars To take the vehicle of the future from concept to reality, there are new steps we can take to advance beyond the car of today. In the future, IoT will begin to transform day-to-day activity through infotainment and telematics. Self-driving capabilities will expand beyond testing

multimedia home screen. Your choice of four widget panels can be displayed on the Home screen. You can save different multi-widget pages to display exactly what you want, when you want. Depending on the model, widget options can include album art of a current song, clock, compass, photo frame, visual EQ, weather, turn-by-turn Garmin navigation and more. When adding in an optional iDatalink Maestro radio replacement interface, additional widget options can include climate controls, radar detector information, tire pressure monitoring systems and more. Further user customizations have phases to tangible advantages at our fingertips. With IoT, vehicles will also continually improve with over-the-air (OTA) updates.

How 5G is Driving Us Forward Presently, tomorrow’s connected vehicle is in first gear, preparing to shift. 5G will be the clutch factor to shift innovation into high gear. The car can use 5G to balance workloads between the car and the cloud, cutting latency down to the millisecond. This fast access to data allows us to rethink the architecture within the vehicle systems. 5G will give cellular network operators the green light for roads full of connected and self-driving vehicles, using a mix of network slicing, edge computing and beamforming. 5G EOC from RP Digital RP Digital is offering the next generation of wireless services today. Introducing 5G EOC, its latest technological breakthrough that features rich content management systems, enterprise streaming and a social-commerce engine and secured data services all in one place. The EOC (evolution of communication) represents the paradigm shift from telephone, broadband and cable companies of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s to the wireless service companies of present day. Remarkably, the common thread between all these eras expound on the need to push for higher speeds and broader service options that push the balance and behavioral patterns of customers across the country. The role of yesterday’s telephone company was defined by speed and distance. The idea

was largely about connecting people to people. Today’s wireless industry has pierced the notion of merely connecting people to people by enabling all things to communicate everywhere. Time and distance has appeared to shrink in our current use patterns, making available the ability to experience the web like we’ve never thought possible. The introduction of LTE has changed the state of the telecom industry by erasing the borders that were once drawn and defined by GSM and CDMA bands. RP Digital believes that EOC will have as great an impact on the entire market as LTE has in recent years. The choice of staying with a carrier based on brand loyalty is now erased from consumer conscience. Brands are now sold across every carrier platform –
