IT'S A MUST WE TALK ABOUT IT!!!
Grades & Teach ers Should Students Be Able to Grade Their Teachers?
Body Changes
Can students offer insights and observations about teachers that school administrators and teachers themselves might otherwise miss? Would you be fair and honest when grading your teachers?
Friends For teenagers, good friends can be like a personal support group... They can provide: a sense of belonging, a feeling of being valued and help with developing confidence... A sense of security and comfort in being with others going through the same experiences... What is the true definition of a FRIEND ?
Depression Anxiety and depression occur in both genders, but by the teenage years, girls are much more at risk than boys. Before puberty, the prevalence of mood disorders is about the same in boys and girls... It’s important to understand that anxiety and depression often occur in the same teenager, and may need to be treated as two separate disorders...
What Girls Need to Know About Growing Up... That's a question many girls ask during puberty... During puberty your body releases hormones that stimulate your ovaries to start producing the female hormone estrogen...
Dating During your teen years, you may start to become interested in dating and finding someone who you are compatible with romantically. Sometimes, you may not be ready to start dating, but feel that you have to because everyone else around you is. Some parents of teens will be very restrictive about the age their children can start to date, leading teens to date in secret. Before you start dating, it is important to think about a number of things. - a process -dreams of its future -governed by its value -speaks boldly -loves its Creator at any cost -embraces wise guidance - watches burning flames
Purity 8 | #OSGMagz
Freedom from adulteration or contamination.
Drugs & Alcoh ol Bullying Every day thousands of teens wake up afraid to go to school... Two of the main reasons people are bullied are because of appearance and social status... Guys and girls who are bullied may find their schoolwork and health suffering... Bullies are at risk for problems, too...
This is substance abuse. Teens may try a number of substances, including cigarettes, alcohol, household chemicals (inhalants), prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and illegal drugs. Teens use alcohol more than any other substance. Marijuana is the illegal drug that teens use most often.
Winter Edition | JAN - FEB 2017
Peer Pressure It isn't just or always about doing something against your will... You might hear the term 'peer pressure' used a lot... But peer influence is a better way to describe how teenagers' behaviour is shaped by wanting to feel they belong to a group of friends or peers... Peer pressure or influence can be positive or negative...
Social Media Teens are masters at keeping themselves occupied in the hours after school until way past bedtime... When they’re not doing their homework (and when they are) they’re online and on their phones, texting, sharing, trolling, scrolling, you name it...
Certainly speaking indirectly creates a barrier to clear communication...

STUDYING
LIKE A BOSS
LEARNING STRATEGIES
What Types of Learner Are you? 1. Auditory "Auditory learner" is a phrase used to describe students who tend to retain information more thoroughly when the information is reinforced through sound.
2. Visual "Visual leaner" is a way of learning in which information is associated with images. Learners first see what they are expected to know. Utilizes graphs, charts, maps and diagrams.
3. Kinesthetic "Kinaesthetic learning" or tactile learning is a learning style in which learning takes place by the students carrying out physical activities, rather than listening to a lecture or watching demonstrations.
Setting Up Your Study Space Things to Do:
1. Sleep Earlier
Getting proper rest can help you focus better in school and pay more attention to your teacher, assignments, or any activity being completed.
Bio
2. Socialize It's also good to socialize because let's say for instance you are not at school, your teacher says if you were absent yesterday ask a partner or someone to catch up. If you don't talk to anyone you will be behind.
3. Keep Organized Being organized is also very very important because knwoing where all your work is makes it easier to find especially when assignments are due.
4. Don’t be Annoying NEVER annoy other people while they are trying to focus on their work or their activity so they can continue to be successful and so you can too.

1.
WHERE – Set up your space in an area where you won’t be distracted. Your study space, is your study space and shouldn’t be used for anything else...
2.
The Desk – Put together a study caddy with all of the essential items you need to study...
3.
The Tools – Have everything you need in your study space. Lessens the chances of you being distracted ..
4.
Make It Fun – Making your study space bright and colourful can really improve your mood...
5.
HARDWORK, DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, & PERSEVERANCE IS KEY!!!
Homework’s DOs and DON’Ts Do Create the general understanding that learning takes place inside and outside of school and classrooms. (Develop a work ethic for at-home assignments.) Check work for accuracy, neatness, and completeness.
Winter Edition | JAN - FEB 2017
Don’t Do not wait until the last minute to complete assignments. By doing so, you are risking the chance of higher test scores. Make excuses for incomplete or sloppy work.

I can remember one day being bullied at school. The children called me bad names and teased me. They purposefully tried everthing they could to break me down. Of course they did it more than once, it became a normal routine for them. Everyday when I went to school someone would roll their eyes at me. As I look back at what happened to me I realized that I was filled with anger and I could not inderstand why they chose me to pick on. The kids knew they hurt me because they saw me crying but yet no one did anything about it. Felt like the kids were stronger than me. I was called names like "BALD EAGLE" and I felt that if I said something back it would only make things worse. One day everything begin to change. I was tired of the constant teasing and the name calling so I took a stand. I may have taken a stand in the wronf direction, but hey, a stand is a stand right, lol. I begin to clown other just like I was clowned. When girls would roll their eyes I would roll mine back. Even when they talked trash I would be petty by hurting

their feelings. I soon felt bad about what I was doing and I realized that hurting people was wrong. One thing I learned is that clowning someone because they aren't our definition of perfect is not okay. Just because they dont look like everyone else doesn't mean we should treat them differently. If I were to tell you my hair loss experinece was easy, that would be a lie.
BALD is BEAUTIFUL “God only made so many perfect heads, the others are covered with hair ” There are many nights that I would just sit up and cry. This disease almost took my self esteem. I would wonder and question why did it have to be me. But now I have accepted all the flaws I have. The light is now shining on what use to be a dark path. I don’t care if others look, point or stare at me. So what if I have alopecia, I’m still happy.

C.R. Patterson & Sons Company (1893-1939)
Frederick McKinley Jones 1893 – 1961
Madame C J Walker 1867 – 1919
The C.R. Patterson & Sons Company was a carriage building firm, and the first African American-owned automobile manufacturer. The company was founded by Charles Richard Patterson, who was born into slavery in April 1833 on a plantation in Virginia. His parents were Nancy and Charles Patterson. Patterson escaped from slavery in 1861, heading west and settling in Greenfield, Ohio around 1862.
Frederick McKinley Jones was one of the most prolific Black inventors ever. Frederick Jones patented more than sixty inventions, however, he is best known for inventing an automatic refrigeration system for long-haul trucks in 1935 (a roof-mounted cooling device). Jones was the first person to invent a practical, mechanical refrigeration system for trucks and railroad cars, which eliminated the risk of food spoilage during long-distance shipping trips. The system was, in turn, adapted to a variety of other common carriers, including ships. Frederick Jones was issued the patent on July 12, 1940.
became known as Madam C. J. Walker, was born into a formerslave family to parents Owen and Minerva Breedlove. Madam Walker was an entrepreneur who built her empire developing hair products for black women. She claims to have built her company on an actual dream where a large black man appeared to her and gave her a formula for curing baldness. When confronted with the idea that she was trying to conform black women’s hair to that of whites, she stressed that her products were simply an attempt to help black women take proper care of their hair and promote its growth. She was the first African-American woman millionaire.
Garrett Morgan 1877 – 1963 Garrett Morgan was an inventor and businessman from Cleveland who invented a device called the Morgan safety hood and smoke protector in 1914. On July 25, 1916, Garrett Morgan made national news for using his gas mask to rescue 32 men trapped during an explosion in an underground tunnel 250 feet beneath Lake Erie.

After witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse-drawn carriage, Garrett Morgan took his turn at inventing a traffic signal. Other inventors had experimented with, marketed, and even patented traffic signals, however, Garrett Morgan was one of the first to apply for and acquire a U.S. patent for an inexpensive to produce traffic signal.
Norbert Rillieux 1806 – 1894 Norbert Rillieux was born on March 17, 1806 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Norbert was born a free man, although his mother was a slave. His father was a wealthy White engineer involved in the cotton industry. Rillieux patented the multiple-effect vacuum pan evaporator. This device heated sugar cane juice in a partial vacuum, reducing its boiling point, allowing much greater fuel efficiency. This innovation, adopted in sugar refining, escalated production, reduced the price, and was responsible for transforming sugar into a household item. Similar technology was subsequently developed for the production of soap, gelatin, and glue. Some have called Rillieux’s evaporator the greatest invention in the history of American chemical engineering.

Winning student of the year was a great accomplishment for me. It let me know that all my hard work and studying paid off in a big way and people notice all the good things I do. When I was nominated I was shocked because there are a lot of 5th graders at Herod. I'm usually like whatever when I get an award because lots of us kids get awards at the end of the school year. But to be chosen out of so many made me very proud of myself and it makes me want to keep striving to be better and better and learn more and more.
Any student can be student of the year. You must first believe in yourself and know you can be anything you want to be. Never let anyone try to steal your joy. When people talk down on you or tell you that you can't do it, use them as a stepping stool to climb higher. I face tough situations all the time but I pray and ask God to help me and I keep going. Listen to your parent, teachers, and adults that are good role models. Study and practice until you get it and you'll be great. Nothing is easy to do but with hard work and faith anything is possible.

A Girls
First Love
Dearest Daughter,
DEAR DAUGHTER
A AMESSAGE FROM DADDY WITH LOVE FATHER IS THE FIRST MAN IN A GIRLS LIFE AND PROBABLY THE MOST INFLUENTIAL!!! When our daughters face a difficult day they will always be able to turn to our encouraging words. Nevr be afraid to write a letter to your daughter expressing your LOVE for her as a FATHER and keep a copy for yourself. A letter from father to daughter is special and lasting A letter from father to daughter is special and lasting. It doesn’t have to be long. No matter the length it is something she can keep and cherish.
"Dear Little One, As I write this, I’m sitting in the makeup aisle of our local Target store. A friend recently texted me from a different makeup aisle and told me it felt like one of the most oppressive places in the world. I wanted to find out what he meant. And now that I’m sitting here, I’m beginning to agree with him. Words have power, and the words on display in this aisle have a deep power. Words and phrases like: Affordably gorgeous, Infallible, flawless finish, Brilliant strength, Liquid power, Age defying, Choose your dream, Nearly naked, and Natural beauty.

But words do have power and maybe, just maybe, the words of a father can begin to compete with the words of the world. Maybe a father’s words can deliver his daughter through this gauntlet of institutionalized shame and into a deep, unshakeable sense of her own worthiness and beauty.
Brilliant strength. May your strength be not in your fingernails but in your heart. May you discern in your center who you are, and then may you fearfully but tenaciously live it out in the world.
Instant age rewind,
Problems
And they’ll tell her she has to look a certain way to have any worth or influence.
A father’s words aren’t different words, but they are words with a radically different meaning:
Go nude,
Do you have any
When you have a daughter you start to realize she’s just as strong as everyone else in the house—a force to be reckoned with, a soul on fire with the same life and gifts and passions as any man. But sitting in this store aisle, you also begin to realize most people won’t see her that way. They’ll see her as a pretty face and a body to enjoy.
Choose your dream. But not from a department store shelf. Find the stillquiet place within you. A real dream has been planted there. Discover what you want to do in the world. And when you have chosen, may you faithfully pursue it, with integrity and with hope. Naked. The world wants you to take your clothes off. Please keep them on. But take your gloves off. Pull no punches. Say what is in your heart. Be vulnerable. Embrace risk. Love a world that barely knows what it
means to love itself. Do so nakedly. Openly. With abandon. Infallible. May you be constantly, infallibly aware that infallibility doesn’t exist. It’s an illusion created by people interested in your wallet. If you choose to seek perfection, may it be in an infallible grace—for yourself, and for everyone around you. Age defying. Your skin will wrinkle and your youth will fade, but your soul is ageless. It will always know how to play and how to enjoy and how to revel in this one-chance life. May you always defiantly resist the aging of your spirit. Flawless finish. Your finish has nothing to do with how your face looks today and everything to do with how your life looks on your last day. May your years be a preparation for that day. May you be aged by grace, may you grow in wisdom, and may your love become big enough to embrace all people. May your flawless finish be a peaceful embrace of the end and the unknown that follows, and may it thus be a gift to everyone who cherishes you. Little One, you love everything pink and frilly and I will surely understand if someday makeup is important to you. But I pray three words will remain more important to you—the last three words you say every night, when I ask the question: “Where are you the most beautiful?” Three words so bright no concealer can cover them. Where are you the most beautiful? On the inside. From my heart to yours, Daddy" Kelly Flanagan's
It is difficult to imagine that my life has led me to this point because, honestly, I was not supposed to make it this far as a young, black male in today’s America. Studies show that we (black males) don’t make it past 25. But, you my darling are under fire as well. Being young, black, and female, comes with just as much struggle. Thoughts of what can happen to you during school hours when I am not there to physically, emotionally and psychologically protect you keep me up at night. Like Salecia Johnson, at six years old, you may throw a tantrum during story time and be physically restrained in handcuffs to “calm you down” because your teacher is trained to call the police instead of de-escalating situations in the classroom. At ten years old, you may overhear me and your mom arguing and are unable to focus in class the next day, which agitates your teacher who gives you detention for being withdrawn. Or like Kiera Wilmot, at sixteen years old your interest in science may lead you to conduct a science experiment that results in a small explosion and, even though no one is hurt, felony charges. What frightens me most is that your teachers may not take an interest in your educational aspirations, passions and general being. Unfortunately, as a black girl you may get less attention than your male counterparts early in your educational career because you are perceived as more socially mature or self-reliant. I solemnly swear to encourage, support and assist you in realizing each and every one of your dreams from being a fairy princess to one of the few black women to argue before
Important! Something tweens & teens must never ever forg et. Did I offer peace tod ay? Did I bring a smile to some one's face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentmen t? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions . I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will be ar many fruits, here in this wo rld and the life to come.

the Supreme Court of the United States. However, there is no doubt in my mind that your teacher’s support of your dreams and aspirations are as equally, if not more, important as the support you receive from me. I want to be perfectly clear. I am not saying any of this to scare you. I am telling you this out of love. Therefore, I urge everyone reading this letter to call out injustices in the educational system whenever and wherever they are present so our daughters have just as much access to an education as every other American child. And as for you, sweetheart, I request that you help me show the world how beautiful and magical you truly are. Because only then will the world be able to see you for all that you are and can be. You’re my daughter and I love you. You’re smart. I trust you.
Love A Fathers
is every girls dream
10 Things Dads
have written about to their Daughter 1. “I love you from the bottom of my heart.” 2. “I believe in you.” 3. “I know you’re beautiful.”
You’re a hard worker. You’re grounded in your faith. When I watch you act with compassion, it makes my heart burst with pride. The work you did on that project, the way you help out around the house, the good manners you use around other people, the way you handle your allowance… I cried like a baby the first time I held you. I prayed for you ever day for nine months, and I haven’t stopped since. You were such a beautiful baby from the first moment. Because you are created in love and with a purpose. You are created to both live and love at capacity. That requires the very best. Use the gifts you’ve been given. Treat your body with respect. Spend your life with someone who loves you like I do.
4. “You make me proud in so many ways.” 5. “I want you to know what my treasures are.” 6. “Let me tell you about the day you were born.” 7. “Don’t ever settle for second best.” #Number1 8. “Sometimes my love for you makes me afraid.” 9. “You can always come to me—no matter what— and I will help you figure things out.”
Sincerely, Your Loving Father
10. “Now I want you to listen to my heart.”

I sometimes think about what happened to my dad and really wish people wouldn't kill. I was born 2 weeks after he died, I never knew him. I Just have to imagine what he was like through things that are told to me. It hurts that I can't do father- daughter things like other girls. I try to think positive and say hopefully my mom will marry someone that can be my father figure. I am blessed with his family though. I love my big brother dearly. As well as my grandmother uncles and aunts. They are the closest connection to him that I have. And even though I never met him or talked to him I know how much he truly loved me. -Payton Brown
