LAST GAME RECAP

The Oshawa Generals hosted the Sudbury Wolves for a pre-SuperBowl classic, and made it a memorable one. Oshawa scored eight goals on the Wolves for an 8-5 win, bringing them within just one point of the Wolves for the final playoff spot.

It was a fast and furious start to the game, with bodies flying from both sides of the rink. While it may have been a game in February, from the second the puck hit the ice it was a playoff atmosphere at the Tribute Communities Centre, in front of more than 5,700 fans.

The Sudbury Wolves were actually the first to break the ice tonight, when Dylan Robinson let a floater go from the point that fooled Jacob Oster’s glove hand. The first period came to a close with the Wolves up 1-0. Sudbury outshot the Generals 11-6.

Oshawa woke up in the second period scoring three of their own unanswered. First, it was Tyler Graham scoring his first OHL goal with a wrister from the left faceoff dot. Cameron Butler gave the Gens their first lead of the game halfway through the second. A few minutes later, Dylan Roobroeck had the entire arena fooled when he sneakily scored his 12th of the year.

Following his shaky play in the first period, Oster stopped all 11 shots he faced in the second period.

In the final 20 minutes, both teams seemingly left their defence in the dressing room. Nine more goals were scored in the third period, highlighted by three empty-net goals from the Generals to secure the victory.

Goals from Ty Petrou, Ryan Gagnier, Ben Danford and two from Cameron Butler rounded out the offensive explosion in the third. Butler’s two markers completed his hattrick. The milestones continued with Ryan Gagnier’s 100th career point.

With the win, the Generals keep pace in the standings, keeping themselves within striking distance of the Wolves for the 8th and final playoff spot. The victory is one of the biggest this season, as a loss would have seen them five points back.

The Generals are in action next on Wednesday, Feb 15th against the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7:05 p.m., where the Generals will wear specially designed jerseys presented by the Real Canadian Superstore design contest. Jerseys will be auctioned of in support of the Children’s Aids Foundation.
