It’s that time of year again! I’m excited once again to welcome everyone back for another season of Generals Hockey.
Each year, my goal is to uphold the legacy this organization has built throughout its long history. As always, we want to add another OHL and Memorial Cup title to our already league best totals, for not only the organization, but for you the fans.

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2022-23 season of the Oshawa Generals and the Ontario Hockey League. This welcome back certainly goes to our legion of loyal supporters but also welcome back to the players, players families, billets and staff. It should also be noted that we cant wait to return to a normal schedule where we all get to see the stars of tomorrow from across the whole OHL.
Every season takes on its own theme and feel. Every season takes on a life of its own. This year’s season will be the most competitive we have had in a few years. One factor is that we will again be returning to a full OHL schedule and with the Eastern Conference shaping up to be the most competitive it has been in years, every point and game will be a must for top rated performances. The addition of new Head Coach, Derek Laxdal and his winning pedigree is exactly what the doctor ordered, and the timing couldn’t be better. Along with new Associate Coach, Steve O’Rourke and Mike Hedden returning for his second season, this staff could go up against any in the CHL. You will continue to see a long line of future Generals stars on the ice again this season and I cant thank the scouts enough for all the hard work they do. The returning players have positioned us to be fighting for hardware again soon and the new players will have to get on board quickly. That being said, we are on a collision course with a couple of other teams in the Eastern Conference. If we have any desire to get another Bobby Orr trophy and then battle for the J. Ross Robertson trophy, business will need to be taken care of each and every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned.
Our past is certainly something that everyone in our region, city and organization are very proud of. During this season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again.

Just twice, that’s the number of times the Generals have won since February 14th. Victories over the Bulldogs on February 15th and February 26th are the onlt four points the Generals have earned in over a month. With that, they look next at the Mississauga Steelheads as their next chance to score a win. The Generals enter the Sunday night matchup losers of eight in a row, while the Steelheads continue fighting for home ice in the first round of the playoffs.
Coming into Sunday night, the Steelheads currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with 68 points, just two points back of the Hamilton Bulldogs and Peterborough Petes, both tied for fourth, and home ice in the opening round. The Steelheads were winners in their last outing, holding off Bradnt Clarke and the Barrie Colts long enough to push the game to a shootout, before winning the extra point 6-5.
Every game is important, including this one, in the Generals’ hopes for that eighth and final playoff spot. All the action gets underway at 6:05 p.m.
Last Meeting:
Last running into each other on January 3rd, it was the Generals coming away with a 5-4 overtime win. The Generals took an early 3-1 lead all the way into the second period where the Steelheads rattled off three unanswered to take the lead. In the third period, Stuart Rolofs tied the game with under a minute to go, before Joseph Serpa scored in overtime to win the game for Oshawa. Former Steelhead Luca DelBelBelluz had two goals in the loss, while Generals’ Dylan Roobroeck had two of his own.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
RYDER MCINTYRE JAMES HARDIE DYLAN ROOBROECK
It’s clear the 6’7 forward enjoys playing against the Steelheads, but the Gens’ coaching staff and crowd, hopes the production continues on Sunday. In their last meeting, Roobroeck scored two goals in the first period to help Oshawa take an early lead. We’ve talked about it before, but despite his size, Roobroeck has really begun to find his offensive touch in the later parts of this season, now connecting for 15 goals and 50 points on the year. At just 18 years old, GensNation should be excited to watch Roobroeck again next season.
Another Generals player who really found himself after arriving in Oshawa, Ryder McIntyre has been coming to life. More so than ever before, McIntyre has become that player on the ice you never want to share a shift with if you’re the opposition. Whether he’s using his grittiness in the corner, or straight-up outpacing you to the puck, McIntyre will make you earn every inch. Number 72 on the ice also managed two points of his own the last time these two teams connected.
Take a quick look at the stats sheet in Mississauga and it won’t take long to see who’s driving the offense for the Steelheads. In 62 games, the forward has amassed 37 goals and 42 assists for 79 points. Hardie has a 36-point lead over his next closest teammate in Zander Veccia and his 43 points. Night in and night out, Hardie will drive the Steelheads’ offense, so if he can get it going early in Oshawa, it will be tough for Oshawa to stay in the game.

There was no special St. Patrick’s Day luck for the struggling Oshawa Generals this season, losing their eighth-straight game. The Ottawa 67’s completed their season-series dominance over the Generals with a tighter-than-usual 4-3 victory, finishing the season series 7-0-1-0 against the Generals.
In the opening 20 minutes, the GensNation faithful numbered at 5,854, were alive early with Irish jig dancing in the crowd, rhythmic clapping, ‘Go Gens Go’ chants and, the wave. It looked like the Generals were taking it all in and using it to take it to the league’s best team. While the 67’s opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game, Oshawa responded in the best way.
In a span of just 1:02, both Luke Torrance and Ty Petrou were able to get on the board for the home side, erasing an early 1-0 deficit and turning it into a 2-1 lead seemingly out of nowhere. Torrance started the scoring after he perfectly read the shot from teammate Dylan Roobroeck, receiving the rebound right off the pads of Collin MacKenzie before he buried it into an empty cage. 1:02 later, Ty Petroud turned around in the zone with the puck, threw it on net, and beat MacKenzie clean with a shot that surprised the entire building.
Unfortunately for the Generals, they couldn’t get out of the first period with the lead. First, to no one’s suprise, Logan Morrison was able to get on the board for Ottawa, finally hitting home a loose puck in the Oshawa crease, that Jacob Oster did everything he could to smother. Less than three minutes later, Cooper Foster beat Oster clean with a wrist shot with about six minutes left in the frame, to tie the game.
In the second period, the only scoring came for the 67’s, extending their lead to 4-2. Cameron Tolnai buried his 24th of the season to extend the lead. Oshawa managed just five shots on goal in the entire second period, while the 67’s got 12 off towards Oster.
The final frame had started, and you can feel the sense of urgency from the Generals. Offensive pressure in the Ottawa zone forced the 67’s to take a few penalties they wish they’d have avoided. On an ensuing 4-on-3 power play, Ryan Gagnier used his speed to get almost all the way around a 67’s defender, forcing him to hook Gagnier off balance. Despite the obstruction, Gagnier was still able to drive to the net and tuck the puck past MacKenzie.
This is as close as the Generals would get though, failing to beat MacKenzie with the goalie pulled late in the third period. The loss marked Oshawa’s 8th defeat in a row and 13th in their last 15 games.
Despite the loss, the Generals remained one point ahead of the Kingston Frontenacs who lost to London 6-3. Oshawa’s next home game is their 2nd last of the regular season when they host James Hardie and the Mississauga Steelheads at 6:05 p.m. with the hope to get back into the win column and closer to the postseason.
FRIDAY, MARCH 17TH
RACE FOR 8TH
With just one month left on the Ontario Hockey League calendar, the races for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference are starting to become as clear as mud. Literally. There’s a four-team race for home-ice advantage in the first round, with 4th through 7th only separated by five points. A little bit lower in the standings is where our race gets started.
The Generals find themselves in a tight race with the Kingston Frontenacs for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Over the course of the next nine games, we’ll keep things as simple as possible for you via schedule breakdowns, up-to-date results and the magic number needed to secure the X next to the Generals logo.
Following an 8-3 thrashing at the hands of the Ottawa 67’s, the Generals have just two more games this weekend, both at home to the 67’s on Friday and the Mississauga Steelheads on Sunday. The Frontenacs take a trip south for another three-in-three weekend in London, Sarnia and Kitchener. The Frontenacs currently sit one point back of the Generals, but have not been doing themselves any favours. Losers of two straight, and 13 of their last 14 games, time is starting to run out for Kingston. It isn’t getting easier for them either, taking on two of the west’s best teams in London and Sarnia, as well the Kitchener Rangers who have really started to play the hockey everyone expected them too.
The Gens will hope to rebound against the 67’s on home ice, before a clash with the Steelheads on Sunday. Their last outing against the Steelheads came back on January 3rd, where the Generals squeaked out an OT victory. Oshawa hasn’t been making things easy for themselves lately either, winning just two games in their last 14 outings, including their current seven game losing streak.

OVERAGE FARWELL SERPA, BUTLER, GAGNIER
March 26th, 2023 will mark the end of an era for three members of this season’s Oshawa Generals. The final Sunday in March represents the final regular season Ontario Hockey League contest for Joseph Serpa, Cameron Butler, and Ryan Gagnier – Oshawa’s three 2002-born overage forwards. With playoffs on the horizon, their final OHL game ever is still waiting in the wings, but when the final buzzer goes on March 26th, it’s the first sign of their graduation from the OHL.
JOSEPH SERPA
The first OA we’ll spotlight in this farewell is one of the newest Generals to dawn the historic red but still boasts an impressive OHL career. Joining the Generals in a trade with the Kitchener Rangers, Serpa joined his new teammates in Oshawa on December 13th, about a month ahead of the OHL’s trade deadline. Before the trade, Serpa had spent his entire career with the Rangers, appearing in 146 games for Kitchener, plus another 12 games in the team’s 2022 playoff run.
The Cambridge, Ont., native got better with every season he played, hitting a new career high of 69 points in the 2021-2022 season with 20 goals and 49 assists. His career-best season was just a single year removed from a year without OHL hockey due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As is the case with many players following a trade, it took Serpa a period of adjustment before he hit his groove again in Oshawa. It was his third game as a Generals before getting his first point, and five games before scoring. Just as he was during a Ranger, Serpa quickly became a fan-favourite in Oshawa garnering a lot of attention during the annual Season Ticket Holder Skate and Buffalo Wild Wing Charity Dinner.
CAMERON BUTLER
A leader off the ice as much as he’s a leader on the ice, unfortunately, Cameron Butler’s time as a General is beginning to tick away. Butler has spent time with three different clubs throughout his OHL career, but none for as long as the Oshawa Generals.
Drafted 27th overall by the Peterborough Petes in 2018, Butler had an impressive rookie season with the maroon and white, scoring 18 goals and adding 8 assists for 26 points in 64 games. The next season, Butler was traded to the Niagara IceDogs as part of the deal that saw Akil Thomas land in Peterborough.
In 51 games with the IceDogs, Butler’s on-ice play continued to improve, and the Ottawa Ont., native began finding himself in a leadership role. He scored 12 goals in Niagara, and added 24 assists over the course of his time as an IceDog. Butler was also named team captain ahead of the start of the 2021-2022 season. His tenure as an IceDog came to a close when he was acquired by the Generals on January 3rd, 2022 for a 2nd and 11th round pick.
The 2022-2023 has been a career year for Butler, setting new career highs in goals, assists, and points in a season. At the time of publication, Butler has appeared in 55 games this season, scoring 23 goals and 24 assists for 47 points. His next best season totals were only 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points. Butler is expected to hit a milestone as his OHL career concludes, set to appear in his 250th OHL regular season game on March 10th.
RYAN GAGNIER
The one 2002-born to spend his entire OHL career with the Generals is Ryan Gagnier . Known as ‘Gags’ around the rink, there was rarely a day he did not have an ear-to-ear smile on his face walking around the arena. Spending four years with one organization is a pretty quick way to become a fan-favourite, and that’s without even looking at his on-ice success.
In 180 games as a General, Gagnier quickly took his depth-role on the team very seriously. Fans eventually learned that Gagnier was going to be one of the hardest working Gen-erals they’ve seen in a long time. In his first full season with Oshawa in 2019-2020, Gagnier appeared in 57 games and scored eight points, five goals and three assists. His next season, Gagnier showed up to camp as a veteran and made it clear he wasn’t just a depth guy anymore. In 2021-2022, Gagnier appeared in 65 games and crushed his totals from a season ago, scoring 17 goals and 19 assists. At the year-end banquet, Gagnier was awarded with the organization’s Heart of a General award, for everything he represents on and off the ice.
This season, Gagnier further instilled himself as a leader on and off the ice Always the first to say yes to any community appearances, Gagnier made it a point to say hello to every fan he crossed paths with. On the ice, he outdid himself yet again. At the time of publication, he has appeared in 57 games and has scored 27 goals and added 29 assists. For most of the season, Gagnier has led the team in scoring – full circle for the former depth forward turned leader.
As we enter the final stretch of these youngmen’s OHL careers, the entire Oshawa Generals organization thanks them for their commitment to success both on and off the ice. These three young men are a representation of how the OHL and it’s member clubs are not only developing good hockey players, but good people. The Oshawa Generals wish them nothing but their best as they continue growing into amazing hockey players and people on whatever the next step of their journeys are.

FUTURE IS BRIGHT
It may have been easy this season to look at the standings and be disappointed as a fan. Look to one side, and Ottawa was running away from the rest of the conference. Look to the other and London is doing what London does best – win. In Oshawa, a season full of ups and downs may have clouded what is actually something to look forward to. The future in Oshawa is centered around the likes of Calum Ritchie, Beckett Sennecke, and Ben Danford. If those names are any indication, the future is bright.
The Generals dressed one of the youngest rosters in the entire OHL throughout the season, but didn’t sacrifice production because of it.
CALUM RITCHIE
2nd overall pick, from just a season ago, Calum Ritchie had a season solidifying his first round NHL draft potential. In his second OHL season, Ritchie was trusted by his teammates and coaching staff to lead the team this season, both on and off the ice. Ritchie was given an ‘A’ at the start of the season, and was expected to continue finding his voice in the room.
On the ice, Ritchie improved on his already great rookie numbers from a year ago. At the time of publication, he’s appeared in 58 games this season scoring 24 goals and 34 assists for 58 points – new career highs in all three categories. Amongst the team leaders in points, Ritchie is expected to go early in the 2023 NHL Draft and continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the OHL.
BECKETT SENNECKE
The first of Oshawa’s two first-round picks from the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, Beckett Sennecke lived up to the hype this season. Taken 8th overall last year, Sennecke joined the Generals as a gifted offensive addition to the roster. In his first season in the OHL, Sennecke has proven on more than one occasion that he can deke through an entire roster by himself, before driving to the net for a red-light special.
Flashes of this greatness have almost become expected by the GensNation faithful. By the numbers, Sennecke has been the best 16-year-old in the OHL this season, leading everyone his age in points with 48 points. The only rookie ahead of him is 15-year-old exceptional status forward Michael Misa, with 50 points. Sennecke has showcased both his playmaking and goal scoring abilities, torching opponents with 16 goals and 32 assists – a reminder again that he’s just 16 years old.
With sights set on the years ahead, it’s clear that Oshawa’s success will follow the success of Sennecke, wherever he will take them.
BEN DANFORD
Just six picks later, the Generals struck gold once again with defenceman Ben Danford, from the Quinte Red Devils. The Madoc, Ont., native spent the first half of his season, learning and adapting to the play style of then captain, Lleyton Moore. Following the trade that saw Moore land in Kitchener, many fans were worried the blueline would fall apart without their power play quarter back in Moore. The transition was seamless. Danford took the extra ice time and responsibility in stride, and alongside new teammate Luca D’Amato, the two continued to lead the Generals’ power play to be the league’s best.
In 55 games with the Generals, Danford has scored two goals and added 17 assists for 19 points. What’s more impressive is his plus/minus rating of positive five, as a 16-year-old on a struggling team. Fans have little to worry about on the blueline for as long as Danford continues to patrol the d-zone.
