LAST GAME RECAP
Following an upsetting 5-1 loss to the Sudbury Wolves on Friday, the Generals entered the GFL Memorial Gardens to take on the 9th-seeded Greyhounds, dressing only 15 skaters.
Unavailable for the Saturday night showdown were leading scorers Calum Ritchie, and Ryan Gagnier, as well as Beckett Sennecke, Thomas Stewart, Nikita Parfenyuk, Luca Marrelli, and Jordyn Ertel – seven regulars. One piece of good news, was Luke Torrance sliding back into the lineup after missing 18 games.
It was the Greyhounds coming out flying in the first period, taking advantage of a shortened Generals’ bench. Just seven minutes into the frame, Jordan D’Intino streaking down the wing and beatin Jacob Oster clean for the 1-0 lead.
The Generals got into some penalty trouble, giving the Greyhounds more than a minute of 5-on-3 power play time. Oster stood tall in net stopping everything the Greyhounds threw at him to keep it 1-0.
Just after the t.v. timeout, a giveaway in the neutral zone gave the home Greyhounds a 2-on-1 chance, ending with Julian Fantino’s 10th of the season, and a 2-0 Sault Ste. Marie lead. A few minutes later, Kalvyn Watson walked through the slot and snapped home the 29th of his season over the shoulder of Oster.
A tough first period came to an end with the Generals trailing 3-0 to the Greyhounds.
Greyhounds’ scoring continued right away in the middle frame, after Christopher Brown buried his 4th of the season through the five-hole of Oster, extending the home side’s lead to 4-0.
The first sign of Generals’ life comes after a momentary lapse by the Greyhounds’ defenders. A bobbled puck sat perfectly in the slot for Tyler Graham to absolutely blast home the second goal of his season. The slapshot put Oshawa on the board, cutting Sault Ste. Marie’s lead to 4-1.
One goal each in the second period meant the Greyhounds still led by three after 40 minutes. Despite getting on the board, Oshawa cotninued to trail on the shot clock 31-22.
Midway through the third period, the Greyhounds get back on the scoresheet with their fifth goal of the game. An easy empty-net tap in from Owen Allard made it 5-1 for the home team. Just under two minutes later, Connor Toms ripped home another shot over the shoulder of Oster to make it 6-1. All alone in front, Justin Cloutier easily wrists home the Greyhounds’ 7th goal of the game.
Before the game could end, Ryder McIntyre added one more for the visitors on the power play, ensuring Oshawa’s top power play gets at least one goal on the man-advantage.
In the loss, Jacob Oster stopped 40/47 behind a very shorthanded group of Generals’ skaters.
