James Garner's Tribute to Johnny Cash

unstoppable ENTERTAINMENT Dear Friends, The great Stephen Sondheim, who left us this past year, wrote: “Good times and bad times, I’ve seen them all and my dear, I’m still here”

A song that could be sung out by grande-dame, The Grand Oshkosh. Since that forced shutdown in March 2020, The Grand has been in a constant state of re-opening. First, online, just five days after the closure, with The Grand at Home. By Fall 2020, we were set to re-open with distanced seating, but after one show, the numbers spiked, and we were closed again. Almost immediately, we activated LiveStream performances, and by December 2020, we were LiveStream and free. Small audiences were added to the mix in the Spring of 2021, and by Fall 2021, we were re-opened, at full capacity, to live audiences. Our educational mission remained solid as, for the past two seasons, the Amcor Student Discovery Series has been presented online, ondemand, and free. With the support of our donors we were able to continue to present captivating performing arts opportunities when we all needed them the most. Between jazz, comedy, country, and top-tier tribute shows, the 20212022 season has something for everyone. Performances like Christmas with The Four Phantoms have finally gotten their time to shine; but newly announced artists will catch your eye as well. Flip through this digital playbill and return to it often, as performances will be added throughout the season. We look forward to welcoming you back to our treasured venue.

Joseph Ferlo President and CEO Director, The Grand Oshkosh

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash James Garner – lead vocals, rhythm guitar Denny Colleret – lead guitar, vocals Chris Akin – bass, vocals Nick Auriemmo – percussion Jeff Frey – sound pro James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash James Garner's Tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the life and music of American icon, 'The Man in Black' with strong conviction and stunning accuracy. Garner and band faithfully recreate Cash's biggest hits, accompanied by historical accounts and personal anecdotes about America's beloved singing storyteller. Tonight’s performance brings you songs and stories from Johnny Cash’s six-decade career. James Garner and his 3-piece band consider themselves fans, performing for fans. Garner became hooked on the music at an early age, getting his hands on everything Cash. At age fourteen, he met Cash backstage after one of the singer’s shows, shaking his hand and telling him he was his “biggest fan.” Now, Garner and band keep the Cash music alive, touring across the country. Past touring highlights include Garner’s band performing in 2008 at the Folsom State Prison for the 40th anniversary of Cash’s remarkable concert. In January, 2018, Garner and musicians returned to Folsom, this time at the Harris Center for the Arts, to perform two sold-out show on the 50th anniversary of that infamous prison concert. For a commemoration of a different nature, Garner and the band participated in an official unveiling of the Johnny Cash Forever Stamp in Claremont, California on June 5, 2013. The musicians have recorded three CDs: James Garner: A Musical Tribute to Johnny Cash (2009), Shades of Black (2012), and James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash: LIVE! (2015). James Garner and the band invite you to sit back and enjoy songs and memories of Johnny Cash and the boom-chicka-boom sound of his longtime backing band, the Tennessee Three. Cashtribute.net facebook - JohnnyCashTributeShow Many thanks to Joe Ferlo, David Lange, Molly Templin, Amber Raygo, Tom Hanson and all the staff at The Grand Oshkosh. After two years of woking together to re-schedule dates, the band is delighted to perform for all of you now, in Oshkosh. No photography or filming during the performance, please.

About the Band James Garner – lead vocals, rhythm guitar James Garner grew up on a cotton farm in Hanford, California, discovering Johnny Cash’s music after his dad saw the country legend in concert at the Fox Theatre. At the time, Garner didn't know who Johnny Cash was....he didn't have hits on the radio, Pandora and YouTube didn't exist and Garner’s parents didn't own any Cash records. One day, Garner, his mom and brother were at the Sam Goody music store in Visalia, California. His mom said Garner and his brother could each pick out a tape. Intrigued by a country superstar coming to his hometown, Garner chose Johnny Cash: Giant Hits. As they drove home, Garner put his new tape in the cassette player of the family car and out rang a single note in time -- the beginning of "Don't Take Your Guns to Town." Then came the big voice and for the next two and a half minutes, Garner was mesmerized by the story of a young cowboy named Billy Joe. Where had this music been all his life?!? There was meaning to it and the music was sparse, like nothing else Garner had ever heard. So began his quest of getting his hands on all things Johnny Cash. By age 12, Garner had learned most of the Man in Black’s hits. A few years later, Cash would play the Tower Theatre in Fresno, California, where the young James would see him in concert and meet him backstage following the show. “Shaking hands with Johnny Cash is still one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had,” says Garner. In 2007, Garner founded his Tribute band to bring the authentic sound and stories of Johnny Cash to audiences everywhere and to proudly present the music of Johnny Cash as fans, for fans. "Garner’s ability to cover Cash’s deep vocal range is impressive in its own right, but his ability to capture the timbre and feeling of the renowned singer’s iconic voice is truly special. Garner’s love of, and dedication to, Cash’s body of work is clear – it seems he was born for this role."-- Brian Cosner, The News-Review

Denny Colleret –lead guitar, vocals Denny Colleret was born in Montreal, Canada and learned to play guitar as a kid by picking-up the needle on Johnny Cash records and replicating what he heard. When he met Johnny Cash at the screening of the country star’s film, “The Gospel Road” in 1973, Denny could already nail Luther Perkins’ signature guitar sound and style. He studied music education at Solano College, and since 1978, has played country guitar in a number of successful bands, opening for Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Doug Kershaw and other country acts. Denny has recorded two albums featuring his singing and guitar playing: Trains Go By and Sixteen Songs. He also performs a solo country program at senior resident centers across northern California. Denny’s uncannily accurate guitar work in this show pays tribute to the Man in Black’s classic boom-chicka-boom sound. Denny’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: Sunday Morning Coming Down

Chris Akin – bass, vocals. Chris Akin’s music careers started by singing youth choir at church and playing trombone and baritone horn in school band. He picked up guitar as a teenager, followed by earning a Bachelor of Arts in music composition from California State University, East Bay. Akin spent seven years teaching vocal music in public schools, followed by 20 years of private bass and guitar lessons while also touring nationally and internationally with various musical acts. Chris recreates the unique tone and style of Marshall Grant, Cash's original bass player. Chris's favorite Johnny Cash song to play: I've Been Everywhere.

Nick Auriemmo – percussion A native of Long Island, New York, Nick Auriemmo earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Performance and Music Education at State University of New York, Fredonia. During that time, he studied classical and contemporary music and West African drumming and xylophone with Ghanaian master, Bernard Woma. He than completed a year of graduate work at the University of Hartford, studying Middle Eastern frame drumming with four-time Grammy winner Glen Velez. Nick earned his Masters of Music degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy and was a member of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Beloit Symphony and several local bands. Currently, a resident of Lodi, California, Nick has performed with the Sacramento, Modesto and Stockton Symphonies, and has played musical productions with the Stockton Civic Theater and Sacramento Music Circus. Nick successfully captures the energy and distinctive style of Cash’s only drummer, W.S. Holland, in this show. Nick’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: Cocaine Blues
