Rooted in Danish Design Steen Friis Design was founded 1998 and has been part of OSK Group since 2016. For more than twenty years, we have developed ship interiors for some of the world’s leading operators and major shipowners. We are deeply rooted in the Danish and Scandinavian design tradition, but we are always looking ahead foreseeing the trends in passenger travel and maritime hospitality and tailoring these to every owner’s distinct fleet portfolio, corporate brand, and unique business model. Our team of international designers understand the importance of beautiful, durable, safe, and flexible interiors and develop these for unique passenger experiences, optimised passenger flow, and increased revenue and onboard spending. Together with our sister company OSK-ShipTech, we offer a unique combination of ship interiors and added services in naval architecture and marine engineering. This way, our clients benefit from the synergy of commercial and aesthetic expertise as well as technical and maritime advisory and compliance. Whether it is the development of interior concepts for your newbuilding or a modernisation of your existing tonnage – We are with you all the way.
Ferry & Cruise Design Passenger vessels are the lifeblood of OSK Group, and in Steen Friis Design we are passionate about creating beautiful and inspiring interiors that effortlessly support the passenger flow as well as the needs of the operating crew. With our designs, we are striving to push the design boundaries with tailored interior and exterior concepts, and we help owners and yards turn travel and design trends into futureproof and profitable concepts, which are scalable to high and low season.
The journey starts with the concept ENCAPSULATING THE DREAM You dream it, we design it! Our finest job as designers is to help owners and clients encapsulate the dream design of their new ship or conversion. Through extensive workshops and close working relationships with our clients, we help translate their ideas and requirements and put into words and images the overall interior concept for the ship. VISUALISING THE IDEA Pulling on our combined expertises, our team of designers formalise the concept together with the client, and by use of moodboards and preliminary drawings, the concept design starts coming to life. When deeper into the design process, the use of virtual reality can be an efficient way to test the design, layout, and materials through simulations of the interiors. OPTIMISED FOR OPERATION Form is nothing without function. We know our way around a ship, and we know that the optimal design both caters to the passengers’ curiousity and offers a great travel experience, but it is also flexible and functional and takes into account the needs and operational requirements of the crew. Additionally, we design with scalability in mind, allowing the shipowner to quickly adjust the interiors and facilities to high and low season – further strengthening the business model and overall profitability.

The Future is here
Step aboard the design before the ship is built OPTIMISED SHIP DESIGN WITH VIRTUAL REALITY We use virtual reality to invite our customer on board the vessel in the early design phase and before the building proces has begun. The global collaboration tool offers detailed and life-like simulations, allowing us to engage in ‘deeper’ design discussions with our clients at a much earlier stage. With virtual reality, we can optimise the design process both time-wise and financially as changes to your design are risk-free. You get a view of the finished look and flow with a true sense of depth and scale offering new possibilities when it comes to visualisation of concepts and proposed designs. MEET INSIDE THE DESIGN – FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD Our VR tool offers blended virtual reality and gamification allowing several participants to be in the virtual environment at the same time. This means that you can walk around the virtual ship together with the designer and discuss the various features. Within the simulated 360-degree views, you get a life-like feel of the interiors – the surfaces, designs, and spaces. You can also test how the spaces are laid out to nudge passengers to flow through shops, entertainment, halls and stairways, test escape routes, and so much more. With virtual reality, we can keep the design process moving forward efficiently despite corona restrictions and limitations in physical meetings.
ENGAGE YOUR STAKEHOLDERS EARLY ON Get your entire organisation aboard the exiting journey of designing a new ship. Make sure you get vital input from the central stakeholders who will be operating the ship’s functions on a day-to-day basis. Let them test galley functions, space between tables, layout of shops and entertainment, bridge and controls, engine room configurations, and cabins and accommodation. With VR, your end-users can get immersed in the proposed layouts to provide valuable feedback for the continued design process. 9
Award-winning Designs Every sailing ship is a manifestation and tangible result of great collaborations between designers, owners, yards and suppliers as well as countless hours of calculations and engineering, concept development, design discussions, and sparring. Aside from knowing that our designs are sailing almost every ocean, having a ship awarded for a particular achievement makes us extra proud. Over the years, Steen Friis Design and OSK-ShipTech have received numerous awards for our designs. In 2014 we won the Shippax Award together with Fjord Line for the successful conversion of MV Oslofjord. Then, for three consecutive years 2014-2015-2016, we won Maritime Denmark’s award Danish Ship of the Year for Bergensfjord, Prinsesse Isabella, and OV Bøkfjord. Latest, MV Visborg was awarded the Shippax Technology and Design Award in 2019, and W.B. Yeats was given the Shippax Ferry Concept Award in 2018 and the Ferry Shipping Summit’s Ferry of the Year Award in 2019.
