ONLY 8 MORE MONTHS… AND WE’RE COUNTING IT DOWN

T

o say that the snowmobile season of 2021 was different is an understatement. Many of us experienced the winter a little more locally compared to years past. And for the first time in probably nearly three decades, I didn’t head to the east coast, Minnesota, Quebec, Wisconsin or the U.P., to pack miles on my sled. And like so many, we were kept to playing in our own local sandboxes. Although most of us were happy to do so, we managed. And we still added more miles to our sleds than trucks. We were happy as long as we were able to be riding. For so many of us, it was a lot different not travelling and staying close to home, and one of the tougher things we experienced this winter in Ontario was finding food on the trail! Some restaurants that we frequented were forced to close, on reduced hours, or only serving take-out. A few times we had no choice but to rake over fuel stations that served pre-made sandwiches. You know the ones that you’d see pre-pandemic, and ask yourself, “Who would eat that on purpose?” Well, we did, and they weren’t too bad. I did start riding with hot mustard and extra napkins in my bag though. A few times we were lucky enough to have Jeff burn something tasty on the pipes of an old triple to feed us. Many thought those old triples smoked a lot, but you haven’t seen smoke like when Chef-Boura-Jeff is cooking on the trail. Many things have changed in a year, and not at all for the best. But we still made it through this winter with a few laughs and some cool memories. While the season seemed a little off-balance with not travelling, there was one trip that we could never miss or postpone… Our annual Snow Shoot. The new model intro in

West Yellowstone, MT., took place in February. As always, it was a first-class event that we all enjoyed, needed, and truly appreciated. Snow Shoot was a breath of fresh air, timed well as my last ride of the season. Surprisingly, Montana was very much how I left it a year ago. After the year we experienced in Ontario, those ten days of riding in Montana were surreal. Snow Shoot is a real legitimate event which went off as it has for the past thirty years, thanks to all of the manufacturers, organizers and coordinators that were so tirelessly involved. There were many new protocols and safety measures in-place, taken to ensure everyone’s wellbeing. As always, it was so important for us to be able to ride the 2022 snowmobiles, and shoot all of the necessary video and photography for the upcoming seasons of OSM and STV. Spending ten days in Montana was the trip of the year for sure, and being able to ride with all the usual suspects, it was far from normal this year. When I returned home, I had to quarantine which wasn’t easy. I mean it was easy to stay home, but so hard not to hug my family the second I walked through my door. Sadly, while I was locked up for two weeks, you could see the snow receding like an old uncle’s hairline. It wasn’t long before the winter of 2021 abruptly ended. And just like that, it was over. Looking back, I couldn’t have ended my season better than riding in Montana for that week. In the off-season stay well, stay safe! Rich

01 BRP EXPANDS ELECTRIC VEHICLES

ACROSS ALL LINES BY END OF 2026

BRP is investing $300 million over the next five years in product development, specialized equipment, infrastructure, production tooling and facilities in order to have an electric vehicle in each of their product lines. The first vehicle is expected to be released within the next two years. “We have always said electrification was not a question of ‘if’ but a question of ‘when’. Today, we’re very excited to unveil more details of our plan to deliver market-shaping products that will enhance the consumer experience by offering new electric options,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO. “We are leveraging our engineering know-how and innovation capabilities to define the

best strategy for developing electric-powered products,” he added. In order to achieve an electric vehicle in each of its product lines, BRP is creating an Electric Vehicle Development Centre in Valcourt, Quebec that will be focusing on the “energy side”. The “energy side” is the charger and the battery pack as well as the integration into the vehicle. The second part of this development is taking place in Austria, that will be focusing on the “torque side” of the project. The “torque side” is the inverter and the high-performance electric motor.

03 TEAM ARCTIC TAKES COR

POWERSPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The season has concluded, the numbers are in and the results show Team Arctic Cross-Country, held the win in all COR Powersports classes. Arctic Cat won 11 of the 19 possible championships, including both the prestigious Pro classes. “Mother Nature dealt us a hand forcing us to race on lakes this season, and the crew at COR designed some challenging courses,” said Team Arctic Race Manager, Mike Kloety. “Our racers proved, an Arctic Cat ZR is still the one to try and beat, and the championships show it.” In the Pro Open Cross-Country Arctic Cat racers swept the top 10 positions for year end points. Zach Herfindahl took the

championship, followed by Wes Selby and rookie Pro, Dylan Stevens. This trio combined for seven of the possible 12 season podiums and each racer won the class once, except for Herfindahl with back-to-back wins in Park Rapids and Naytahwaush. Herfindahl commented, “This season went by really quickly, but we had fun, and the power and handling of our Arctic Cat sleds were top notch. I’m already looking forward to what COR Powersports has planned for next season. I’d like to thank Team Arctic, all our great sponsors and all our passionate Cross-Country race fans for allowing us to show you how well these ZRs perform.”

05 NEW PRODUCTION PLANT FOR TAIGA FOR 2022

Taiga plans on building watercrafts, side-by-sides and snowmobiles at a newly announced production plant in Shawinigan, Quebec. Part of the construction is to be completed in 2022. Once all construction is complete in 2025 the facility is expected to be able to produce 80,000 vehicles. Currently Taiga operations are expected to ramp up to produce 2,000 vehicles by the end 2021. “This facility, a part of the $185M in recently announced funding, will bolster Taiga into becoming a globally leading OEM for powersports vehicles,” said Samuel Bruneau, CEO of Taiga. “We have seen strong customer demand limited by product availability. This new facility shows Taiga’s continued commitment to be trailbreakers and offer electric vehicles capable of diving massmarket adoption without compromise.”

JOHN YOUNG

OWNER OF INDY PARTS PLUS

J

ohn Young opened the Polaris focused used part company, Indy Parts Plus in the fall of 2016. We asked John why he started the used Polaris only part businesses and he replied, “I have no definitive answer for that other than I have always ridden Polaris sleds and I was always upgrading a part and selling the old one”. Currently John’s daily driver that he pounds the most miles on is a 2013 Polaris Rush, but his true love is his pristine 2000 XCR 800 triple which is his late season ride.

1

2

1980 TX-L Indy

1998 XC 700

The first Indy of all time, the first Independent Front Suspension (IFS) to hit the snowmobile market, this sled should be on EVERYONE’s list. This changed the game of snowmobiling and it was POLARIS that did it.

2002 Edge XC SP 700

3

My absolute favourite sled of all time would have to be my 2002 Edge XC SP 700. I had SLP everything on it and it hauled down the lakes. This thing was smoking fast and was set up just right. Back in ’04 in my hometown of Baptiste Lake this sled was famous for hunting down the famous and speedy F7’s. I’d run them ALL down, ALL day long, just like a bad Star Wars movie. Those were good times and good days.

22

John only rides the XCR on “blue bird” days as he commented that the sled is a real head turner, has big power, demands respect even when it’s idling and is conversation piece wherever he travels. If you’re lucky enough you might be able to catch a glimpse of the big XCR if you frequent the Bancroft, Ontario region in the later part of the season. If you haven’t guessed it yet, amongst other things John likes his sleds Fast so to not waste anymore of his time we asked him one question, what are your four favourite sleds?

ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 11 • ISSUE 5

This is by far one of my favourite sleds ever and for a few reasons! This sled is a very well known snowmobile amongst sled heads and it’s a statement, just like my XCR 800 triple. To be blunt the 700 twin was FAST.

2004 PRO XR 800

4

I’m currently restoring this Unicorn, but it is a real beauty. The restoration on the Pro XR is a real slow process because there wasn’t many of them produced but this project is worth it. If I had to put money on it, I would say that this has to be the most expensive Polaris Edge chassis ever built. LOL.

olaris has a star and they know it! The Matryx platform is the newest red carpet darling on the full size sled market, and it has proliferated across the entire line of sleds… oh, and there’s a turbo 850 Patriot motor this year… oh, and more happening on the Timbersled snowbike side… oh, and we are starting to sound like a broken record repeating the ludicrous amount of new tech, sleds, and options for 2022. Polaris brought the house!

THE 850 INDY VR1 129 IS ONE OF THE MOST PLANTED AND POWERFUL POLARIS TRAIL SLEDS EVER.

IF

you think 2021 was a great year, wait till you feel the stampede of power produced by the new 850 turbo. Our test riders can’t stop talking about the new 2022 Indy XCR in the Matryx chassis either. Let’s not forget that Polaris has novice and youth options in the EVO as well. If you are a Polaris family, then the guys and gals working at the Polaris plants in Roseau and Wyoming Minnesota have got you covered. It’s an exciting time to move on over to Polaris too - we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

XCR IS BACK AND THE BAR HAS BEEN SET REALLY HIGH IN 2022. THERE ARE COLOUR OPTIONS AVAILABLE BUT THIS IS THE ONLY ONE POLARIS NEEDED.

onsnow osmmag.com

MATRYX EVOLUTION There’s not much of the Polaris lineup that the new Matryx chassis has not proliferated to. This updated chassis was new last year in 2021, and now you can get it in the trail, crossover, touring, and mountain segments. In addition, Polaris has introduced new ‘Starfire’ Snowcheck spring-only options. These come with options that Polaris is calling ‘factory mods’ that basically have premium factory-installed accessories from storage options to bumpers and windshields, to 2-up seats, and more. In the trails, the Matryx VR1 was widely praised last year, and is available again in 2022 with Polaris specific technology like the huge 7S gauge with Ride Command. If you have not had a chance to try this gauge or ridden in a group with the GPS and tracking functions, we highly suggest you try it. This is still the best gauge and the tech bar has been set high by Polaris. Trail ride, group mapping, and Bluetooth are all part of what makes this gauge so versatile. The VR1 comes in the 129 or 137-inch lengths. Available in the 650 or 850 Patriot motors, the fun factor is extremely high for active trail riders. We also cannot stress enough how strong the 650 motor is. Many, many times our test riders had to look down to the stickers to see if they were riding an 850, only to find out they were on a 650. It is truly that strong! The big news in the trails is the new 2022 Indy XCR in the Matryx platform. This comes in either a 128 or 136-inch length and 650 or 850 motor. It is basically the cross-country race sled, and since it is a Snowcheck model, you can get all kinds of accessories straight from the factory.

TEST RIDER COMMENTS XCR 136” The XCR is hands down one of the best riding machines I have ever been given the chance to ride. The 136” track configuration gives perfect handling on the trails, with flat cornering and completely effortless steering. Taking it off trail, it’s just as capable, even with the shorter track. Finally, a true crossover sled that you don’t have to sacrifice on trail prowess for off trail capability. Jason Kawczynski, Test Rider

The pitch on the track is slightly different (2.52-inch pitch) than the XC model sleds, hence the slightly different track lengths on the XCR. Don’t be fooled though, the 136 (available with any of 1.25 Ice Ripper XT, 1.35 Cobra or 1.60 cobra lug tracks) is fun both on and off-trail. The WER 2.0 Velocity hi-lo speed compression adjustable shocks offer a wide range of ride comfortability and capability. You get WER 2-inch diameter shocks in the rear Pro CC suspension as well. Honestly, the most fun we had in the trails and rough stuff, and even on a lot of crossover areas, was on the 136-inch XCR version with the 1.6-inch lug. At 465 (or 474 for the 850) pounds dry, this one is super lightweight, and you can feel the perfectly balanced geometry when you toss this little buggy around! The tipped rail on these really adds to the playfulness. The 3.35-inch riser allows easy transitioning from sitting to standing, and all the other goodies like a race-ready radial disc brake, smart warmers on the handlebars, 4-wheels in the rear axle, and more come standard. onsnow osmmag.com

The Indy XC returns, and in the carbon fiber and aluminum Matryx chassis, this is a fantastic trail sled. You get some of the best colorways in the industry, and in either a 129 or 137-inch length. Track options are here too, which I personally love to have, with a 1.25 Ice Ripper, 1.35 Cobra, or 1.50 Storm. For years, I’ve put 1.50-inch tracks under most of the 137inch sleds I’ve had, and this is a perfect crossover track. I even prefer it to the

1.6-inch tracks we’ve had on many trail sleds. Fox QS3 shocks all the way around make for easy adjustments, and there is a reason why so many of the new sleds from the OEMs come with these shocks… they work! As for the crossover market, there are plenty of 137 XC sleds and XCRs that fit this bill, but the Assault models are really where it’s at for the crossover rider who wants very good trail and off-trail

TIMBERSLED 2022

THE INDY XC IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE MATRYX PLATFORM IN BOTH 129 AND 137 TRACK LENGTHS. ENGINES OPTIONS INCLUDE BOTH THE 650 AND 850 PATRIOT.

28

ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 11 • ISSUE 5

While snowmobiles continue to be the dominant form of winter motorized fun and excitement, the Snowbike segment is alive and well too. Timbersled announced 3 trims for 2022 including the Pro, Premium, and Sport. The Pro is for the rider who is extreme, and needs to be able to go anywhere. Snowcheck only, the Pro gets new Fox QS3 IBP suspension, has a 3-inch track option, and more. The Premium in-season level has Fox QS3 suspension, and 3-inch paddle track option. Finally, the Sport is the standard version with IFP shock. Also new in 2022 is the Riot 3, which is a 129-inch snowbike with a 3-inch paddle on the track. You can get it in the Snowcheck Pro model or the in-season Premium level packages. Upgrades with the other snowbike are the S-package suspension on the ARO 129-inch, ARO 3-inch lug track, Riot, and Riot with the 3-inch paddle. Basically, the new models for 2022 break down to the Riot 3 Pro, and the ARO 3. Both are 129-inch long, and available as Snowcheck only. The full model lineup is the Riot 120; Riot 3; ARO 129; ARO 3; ARO 137; 120 SX (snocross version), and the youth Ripper model. The Riot continues to be the slightly narrower track, and with the S suspension, has a more dirtbike type feel. The ARO is a more traditional and stable feel.

2022 ACCESSORIES A couple of new cool options topped the list for accessories from Polaris. A new adjustable windshield that goes from mid to tall height and covers the hands was #1 for trail riders who put on big miles. Also, under the seat there is a new option for oil storage 2-quart volume that is made to work with the Matryx seat. performance. These are super lightweight 146-inch sleds, coming in at roughly just 476 pounds dry on either the 650 or 850. You can order for Snowcheck as well, and get the ‘Starfire’ accessory packages from the factory too. The IGX crossover rear suspension can have any of a 1.35 Cobra, 1.6 Cobra, or 2.0 inch Crossover track rolling around it. In the Matryx chassis, this is truly a customizable off-trail sled, and with the 2.0-inch lug, it is really more of a mini-mountain sled. With the Lock & Ride Flex accessory system on the back, you can pick plenty of accessory options too. The Voyageur 146 is also in the Matryx this year too… seemingly like almost everything else! Built to be more of a utility/touring sled with a 1.6-inch Cobra track and the same IGX rear skid that is in the Assault, this is a go anywhere, do anything kind of sled. You can only get it in the 650 Patriot motor though, with IFP shocks all around. The integrated storage and rack allow for easy transport of goods, gear, tools, etc. Plus, you get the hitch system as well. the market. Power and towing capability with a huge 20x155x150 Cobra track; articulated rear suspension; big running boards; power boosting electrical regulator; additional radiator cooling system for low snow and towing, plus lock and ride storage and rack are just a few of the amenities offered standard on the Titan Adventure. This sled is the perfect family; fishing; working; touring; deep snow sled, for anyone in the Northwoods that’s looking to have it all. The smaller EVO sleds are also available in 2022. Praise is warranted here with sticking to a family friendly model to get younger riders and novices into snowmobiling. Three smaller models are offered by Polaris including the 120 Indy, Indy EVO and RMK EVO. The Indy is trail focused with a 121-inch track, and

TEST RIDER COMMENTS – RMK TURBO MOTOR Get ready to hang on for dear life; this is nothing like any two stroke you have ever rode before. Hit the gas and this sled will stand up at will - but watch out, she will keep going and going until you release the throttle! Jason Kawczynski, Test Rider

They finally did it! The sled everyone this side of the equator with even the slightest bit of competitiveness has been waiting for. With 9 lbs of boost and a cut/ tapered tunnel you can’t get this sucker stuck. Being even narrower than the AXYS which was formally known as the narrowest sled on the mean you can thread this rocket threw even the tightest over grown clear cuts. I literally bought Stock in Polaris before they released their 2022 sleds and it’s done quite well. Jordan Hammack

TO BOOST OR NOT TO BOOST SHOULDN’T BE AN OPTION. JUST BOOST IT!

850 TURBO SLASHES UP THE MOUNTAIN POWDER More headlines were made by Polaris in the mountains this year, debuting the new 850 Turbo motor. Since the conception and initial ideas were put to paper for the 850 motor, it was always overbuilt. This was no coincidence, as a turbo was always on the minds of the engineers. It took a while, but the turbo has finally made its way out of the shadows and into the spotlight. Enter the Patriot Boost motor! This 2-stroke turbo is claimed to put out 10% more power at sea level versus the standard 850, but at an amazing 9 psi of boost, you will get up to 50% more power at 10,000 feet. This is all done with Polaris’ patent pending SmartBoost Combustion Control System, and it runs on 91 octane pump gas! Like we said, it took years to develop, and it was co-engineered along with the naturally aspirated 850 Patriot motor. We will have lots more on this motor to come, but many upgrades were made to make this turbo reliable, easy to use, and fun! A few points include new crank seals, new piston with exclusive alloy composition, higher resolution flywheel, new ECU, new P22 primary clutch with idler bearing, which cuts the need for belt deflection and adjustments.

Following on the line of co-development, the 850 crankshaft, rods, head, bearings, water pump and engine mounts were all made initially to handle a turbo. The throttle body is off the snowcross sled, providing additional injection for the amount of fuel necessary for a boosted application. There’s a new intake reed and special carbon fiber petal design that Polaris worked on with Moto Tassinari, to make for this specific motor. The turbo is mounted vertically for the best packaging and best fresh air to exhaust flow, and Polaris claims it to be 40% lighter than comparable nonOEM turbo kits. It is a reverse rotating turbine, and it comes with a patent pending exhaust and wastegate. To keep the turbo all lubricated, there is an added oil pump. The bearings are liquid cooled and in a lightweight aluminum bearing housing. The wastegate is positioned on the pipe for the greatest power and response, and a large

bypass for exhaust flow through the wastegate give it good response when you are not on the boost. There is just way too much to talk about here on the new turbo, but it will be available in the new Starfire Snowcheck Pro RMK Matryx Slash 163 or 165, or the new Starfire Snowcheck RMK Khaos Matryx Slash 155. The new models in the mountains include the Pro RMK Matryx, Pro RMK Matryx Slash, RMK Khaos Matryx, and the RMK Khaos Matryx Slash. There are technically 4 different track lengths in the RMK lineup (155/163/165), and now the new 650/850 RMK w comes in a shorter 146-inch version as well. It is honestly confusing to us with all the models, options, and packages for the mountain sleds here, but it does make for lots of unique sled possibilities coming straight from the factory!

THE “STRYKE” SINGLE KEEL SKI CONTINUES FOR 2022, IMPRESSING US WITH ITS VERSATILITY, AS WELL AS IMPROVING THE STEERING PRECISION ON YAMAHA SLEDS.

CHANGEABLE ON-THE-FLY, FOX INTELLIGENT QUICK SHIFT SHOCK ABSORBERS WITH 2 DRIVER SELECTABLE MODES CONTINUE IN THE YAMAHA LINE UNCHANGED FOR 2022. THE IQS PACKAGE IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST SUSPENSION SYSTEMS ON THE SNOW FOR ITS SIMPLICITY AND EFFECTIVENESS.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING IS BACK FOR 2022 ON SELECT YAMAHA MODELS. THIS IS NOT SIMPLY MARKETING HYPE, THE EPS WORKS WELL CUTTING DOWN ON RIDER FATIGUE, AND MAKES THE SNOWMOBILE FEEL “LIGHTER”. LOOK FOR EPS TO INVADE MORE MODELS AS TIME GOES ON!

To introduce the 2022 lineup of Yamaha sleds, I felt I needed the introduction above to setup this writing assignment, because taken at face value, there isn’t much new for Yamaha hitting the snow next year. I’ve read the posts on social media, and heard the disappointment that there isn’t “more” when talking to other sled heads. These comments are not exclusive to Yamaha fans. In fact, most of the really negative comments are from people that are not current

Yamaha customers. Even if the new sleds were built out of titanium, made 250 horsepower, weighed less then 400 pounds, and ran on unicorn methane. I admit, I wasn’t overly thrilled to learn about the new 2022 sleds. It wasn’t until I decided to look past the perceived lack of shiny new toys, that the scope of the new Yamaha lineup started to come into focus. There is good news here for both on and off trail riders, but it’s buried beneath BNG. To begin with the on-trail segment, Yamaha has reintroduced Electronic Power Steering back into a snowmobile ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 11 • ISSUE 5

platform, and this is huge. I know riders who are still holding onto their Apex sleds with EPS, refusing to ride anything else. Finally, they will have the chance to ride a new Sidewinder with power steering. That one fact alone will sell Yamaha sleds. EPS for 2022 will only be available on select models in the Yamaha line. The L-TX and S-TX GTs are the first to get the power assist option. These models are aimed at the high-end, no-compromise

rider who is looking for the ultimate in luxury and performance. Having the chance to ride an EPS equipped L-TX and S-TX, I can say for certain that this option will be well received. Just like on the old Apex platform, the EPS instantly makes the sled feel much lighter. Steering effort is reduced, as well as unwanted feedback into the handlebars, but the sled doesn’t feel numb. This new system takes into account vehicle speed and engine

RPM to adjust the amount of power steering it provides, adding more assist at slow speeds, and taking it away as the pace increases. Yamaha did not include EPS on the new, retro styled SRX though, and I think that was a mistake. Yamaha feels the SRX customer isn’t the type of rider who is looking for EPS. Instead, they are more hardcore in their pursuit of speed over comfort. I think they want both, or at least the ability to increase grip on the skis without the handlebar effort skyrocketing. Another option I’d like to see on EPS equipped sleds is a variable assist switch, just like the iQS shocks. I think that three settings for the amount of assistance would be welcomed. Despite having a new wish list for power steering options and equipped sleds, this new detail is a big one for Yamaha. They were the first to introduce EPS on offroad vehicles, and now EPS is practically standard in the OHV industry. I don’t think EPS will ever become standard in the snowmobile market, but there will be a significant number of riders who, once they experience the benefits of EPS, will never go back. In the mountain class, Yamaha will bring back the Mountain Max for 2022, with a new LE 154 SL option. The SL stands for Super Light, and comes with a shortened mountain seat and revised fuel tank. The 154” track hooks up with 3” lugs, and just like all the Yamaha mountain sleds for MY2022, it’s equipped with the single beam rear suspension. This sled is specifically targeted at the technical ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 11 • ISSUE 5

rider who is hyper sensitive to weight, and willing to overlook the lack of a battery and electric start on this model. There are also refinements in the clutching, which is a carryover from the Arctic Cat sourced engines. The 400 class, which hit the trails to great success last season, sees new colours across the class, but also a 2-up version of the Transporter lite. These 7/8 size sleds have been a huge success for Yamaha, and the only reason they haven’t sold more is due to their build limitations, which can be addressed by getting your money in early during the Spring Powersurge 2022. For Yamaha mid-range customers, there remains a single SRViper L-TX GT in a classy Ink Blue with Regal Gold livery. In addition, in the utility segment, there is still the

Japanese built RSVenture TF, VK540 and VK Professional II models back for 2022, along with an 800cc 2-Stroke Transporter, and then 400cc 2-Stroke Transporter Lite offerings. All in all, this MY2022 line-up for Yamaha isn’t all in-your-face with new platforms. Would I have liked to have seen more? For sure. I would have liked to see a new gauge package on the Sidewinders, or a new chassis

and suspension, along with a bodywork redesign. Sure, I would have also liked to have seen a 2-stroke offering in the trail class. However, this is where you have to look past just what’s new. Yamaha has been bringing excellent products to market, and has increased their sales because of it. Refining what’s not broke isn’t a bad strategy. In addition, it protects the value of Yamaha sleds for current owners, which is something Yamaha has been actively trying to ensure for a number of years now, by controlling inventory and carryovers. I also see a chassis that is getting older, not only for Yamaha, but their Arctic Cat build partner. Perhaps being in the sunset of its production cycle, maybe the lack of major change this year is a strong indicator of an all-new snowmobile around the corner. After all, if there are major changes coming, why spend money now, retooling complicated refinements on an existing chassis? A new Yamaha chassis is just speculation at this point. What isn’t is a line-up that delivers on the core wants and needs of Yamaha customers, no matter what rider category you put yourself in. ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 11 • ISSUE 5

that’s not enough, almost every segment of Ski-Doo’s line gets something new for this next year. No doubt a massive uptick in sled sales from covid sparked some of these decisions, but even with that, this is a deluge of new product from the Canadian headquartered manufacturer.

WHAT’S NEW? Almost too much to mention in an overview such as this, but let’s start with the trails and crossover sleds. After last year putting everything in the Gen 4 chassis and new RasX and rMotionX rear suspensions introduced, this year Ski-Doo focused on the ride even more. They added the Pilot X skis to several models including the TNT and Renegade, but more importantly Ski-Doo announced a new automatic semi-active shock and suspension system. Dubbed Smart Shox, it is another step toward high performance automotive-level engineering being brought into the snowmobile world. Smart Shox utilize new KYB Pro front and rear twin tube shock absorbers that work in concert with a control module in the nose of the sled that has 5 unique position sensors. On the console there is a toggle switch with 3 different positions that range from a soft ‘comfort’ touring level, to a medium stiffness with the more ‘sport’ ride, to the hardest level with a more performance and aggressive ‘sport +’ shock setting. Working incredibly quickly to adjust compression and rebound these Smart Shox can change and adjust your ride through whoops, corners, and what-

MACH Z

Here’s what you do when you get yours….. Sit down, start it up and immediately figure out how to initiate launch mode. Then proceed to use it at EVERY opportunity possible. No, seriously this sled is quick and you wont be able to resist the “Clutch drop” launch mode to blow away your buddies off the line. Riding this sled you can feel a bit of extra weight in the front end compared to the two stroke equivalent but the power and the turbo blowoff sound reminding you that its ready to throw you back on command, will make you quickly forget.

ever terrain you throw at them up to 50 times per second. Like sophisticated active terrain control in many high-end cars and trucks, this system can control pitch, roll, bottoming, landing and more… and you can change from these 3 settings on the fly. You can get the Smart Shox on the spring-buy MXZ and Renegade X-RS models, plus the new Mach Z. Speaking of the Mach Z… it is back! How many years have we heard dealers and consumers begging for a new big bad monster to return? If memory serves me correct the last time a new Mach was announced was MY2005. The new 2022 version comes with a new 900 ACE Turbo R motor putting out 180hp. This is an accelerated version of the 4-stroke turbo and will be used in the Mach, MXZ, Renegade, Enduro, and Grand Touring lines. The old 150hp turbo stays in the Expedition line. tor has 20% more power and comes with an activated throttle cable with the iTC that actually has resistance, so it is much more user friendly, natural, and safer feel. Boost is up to 17.4 PSI (insane number!), new intake muffler, intercooler, turbine, motor mounts and clutch components. Plus the Mach is the only sled with exclusive ‘launch control’. If you’ve ever seen a big 4-stroke turbo at a straight-line speed race you’ve no doubt witnessed what these launch control systems can do. Instant speed and boost off the line with just holding a button. Other speed specific goodies on the Mach include a 1.5-inch lower ride height and choice of a 137x15x1.25 inch Ripsaw (pre-marked for studding) or Ice Ripper XT track. From personal experience, the launch mode will make any speed-freak giddy. It’s like pressing the ‘insane’ button on an allwheel drive Tesla… which I highly suggest anyone try just once, with your significant other in the car! As if one new turbo motor was not enough Ski-Doo announced a new 130hp 900 ACE Turbo configuration as well. This motor will be available on the MXZ and Renegade Adrenaline, Enduro, and the

44

Grand Touring Limited. The Enduro is possibly the most versatile sled in the line now with 5 motor options (850, 600R, 900 ACE Turbo R, 900 ACE Turbo 130, and 900 ACE) but we will have more on that sled in subsequent articles. Sticking with the new 130 motor, the power puts it squarely in the realm of the 650 2-stroke from Polaris, and the 130 hp 4-stroke motor from Yamaha. But as a 4-stroke turbo it is a much different feel than either of the other competing 130hp class motors in production. This little motor is grunty too, and with no fall off on power at elevation it has plenty of upside. Especially for someone who likes to ride trails in various areas across Canada or the US, this is a cool new option. Another new sled in the trails is the springonly Renegade X-RS with ‘Competition Package’. This is

basically a cross-country race-ready sled which means it comes with the 600R motor per race rules. What sets this sled apart is a reinforced rMotion X rear skid, KYB PRO 40R EA front and PRO 40 EA rear shocks, plus a different 90mm high RS handlebar riser. There’s a low windshield, handguards, lightweight one-piece side panels, and 137x15x1.25 inch pre-marked track for studding as well. Since weight is an issue with racing this comes with only a pull-cord start. The Backcountry line is basically the same for 2022 but the Sport model has a 1.35 lug Cobra track or 16x146x2.0 lug Powdermax track as an option.

COMBINE A FREERIDE AND AN 850 E-TEC TURBO AND YOU HAVE A LOT OF HAPPY CUSTOMERS.

MOUNTAIN’S DO NOT GO UNTOUCHED Like we mentioned in the sidebar, the mountain sleds get 2 sets of LinQ mounts as standard, which will be great for different days, packs, goups, and more. There’s even a new redesigned LinQ snowboard and ski rack! More on that to come, but the options on the accessory side are only getting better. The Freeride is back with 146, 154, or 165 inch options and the 146 comes with a sea-level calibration only and electric start option. The new ‘Arctic Desert’ graphics are daring as well, but we like the limited edition Freeride that come with a glovebox integrated with the one-piece lightweight hood. It is perfect for goggles, waters, extra gloves or whatever else you want to bring with you. The spring only Summit Expert package also returns with a new 34-36 inch adjustable ski stance. The 34 inch stance is certainly something that will make a few heads turn. With either the 850 Turbo, or standard 850 motors this stance will allow riders to more easily perform side-hills, but also sneak between the trees and generally be more agile without as large of body movements. There’s a new brake reservoir protector and both the Expert and X spring models are available in 154, 165, and 175 inch lengths… note the 175 comes with the 850 turbo motor only. SHOT ultracapacitor starting system is standard as is the small lightweight seat and short tunnel with mini-snow flap. The spring X model gets the new-last-year lightweight hood, and lighter front and center shock springs. In season sleds include yet another brand new model being the Summit ‘Edge’. This machine is a hybrid between the lower end SP and X models. It has the 850 2-stroke ETEC motor, short tunnel, SHOT starter smaller seat, and is available in the same three mountain sled lengths as the X. The SP is no longer available in the long 175-inch track with 3-inch lug… it is worth mentioning again that the wider 16-inch tracks on the Ski-Doo’s provide a lot more footprint than the standard 15inch wide machines.

STACKABLE LINQ SYSTEM For anyone looking to do long backpack trips or if you are just the guy in the group that carries the tools, tow straps, etc. then the new LinQ modular cargo box is a necessity. You can stack a couple of these on top of each other and lock them in. Plus these sealed boxes have a big 10 liter capacity for everything you need. Just one more addition to the

fantastic line of LinQ accessories which are the easiest to use and smartest in the industry. Plus you get a set of LinQ mounts on many of the trail sleds, and 2 sets on almost all of the crossover and off-trail sleds as standard issue for 2022. It’s not an expensive part, but certainly a nice touch for everyone.

UTILITY AND TOURING GETS A BOOST We mentioned it earlier, but there are now more options than ever in Ski-Doo’s broad touring and utility lines. There are heated visor and plugs on all of these too! The Grand Touring gets the big boost options of the new 900 ACE Turbo R, new 900 ACE Turbo 130 or standard 900

This display is also on a lot of other models, but cripes, there are soooo many models this year from Ski-Doo we can’t list everything! The venerable Skandic utility line goes virtually unchanged except for colors. Still available in the SWT, WT, and Sport version.

THE RAVE If you are language challenged like me, you can’t roll your RRR’s but the correct annunciation is the RRRaaaVe’, for this incredibly fun ripping racer. Developed on the harsh Nordic race-tracks overseas, the Rave RE 3500 850 E-TEC is meant to give incredible control on rough trails. Over there most trails are not nicely groomed into a pancake, they are more like driving through scrambled egg snow. This is a 137-inch machine (do the math from 3500mm in metric) and it rides on the awesome PPS3 rear suspension. This is a beefy rear skid and not much on the Rave (or any Lynx sleds) is really made for extreme weight reduction. It is meant for durability and to handle an aggressive, agile rider. The first iteration of the PPS was geared for snocross in 2007 and this is the newest version. It is an independent long travel suspension meant to feel more motocross-like than the more planted trail rear suspensions most sleds in North America are focused on. There is a rising rate calibration on the coil-over rear arm shock/spring and additional bracing to the skid. KYB 46 HLCR Kashima coated shocks are in the rear and front arms. The transfer is predictable and fun. After only a few hours riding this it was quickly a test rider favorite in smooth and whooped out trails. A wide ski stance of 42.2 inches as well as the Blade XC+ skis keep the front end predictable and flat in the corners. We cannot over-emphasize how much we like these skis and they are a wider 170mm with 3-stepped keel that is in between a good crossover ski and mountain ski. An Ice Ripper XT 1.5-inch lug track churns

the snow and this one really flies out of the hole. The other two Lynx models announced were the Boondocker DS 3900 and 4100 (154” and 165”) with Powdermax Flexedge 2.5 inch and 3.0 inch lugged tracks respectively. These deep snow models use the Radien DS chassis with short tunnel and unique snow guard/deflector in back for cooling. Round side panels and skinny tank and seat allow for massive maneuverability by the rider. Wide Blade DS+ skis are great for floatation, predictability and transitioning from soft to hard pack snow. Another version of the PPS suspension is slid under the Boondockers, the PPS2DS. The special rear arm design mounted to the rails cuts down on snow build-up and there are KYB 36 Kashima coated shocks here too, and above the skis. You get a slightly wider 36-inch ski stance than the 34 inches on the new SkiDoo mountain sleds.

RAVE Jumping on the Linx Rave, I quickly found out it was a different animal than its Ski-Doo Renegade cousin. Even though it shares many components between them, the Rave has a significantly higher fun factor on and off the trail. Running the PPS 3 suspension through any type of trail conditions delivered consistent control and comfort while planted on its cush seat!

Another unique note is that the 3900 has sea level calibration on the 850 motor and the 4100 has the high altitude calibration. You owe it to yourself to try these three Lynx models at some point, and no doubt you will see plenty on the trails next winter!

was the right move to make, and just another thing Arctic Cat fans have to celebrate in this, the OEM’s 60th year producing quality snowmobiles. Looking back on its first snow machine, the 1962 “Model 500”, compared to the lineup produced today, there is an amazing amount of innovation throughout the long and storied history. These innovations certainly helped shape the industry, and paved the way to the high level of technological sophistication we all see from OEMs today. Cat came into this season with a lot of hype over the past year of our stayat-home isolation around the world. This surely helped breed countless rumors in chat rooms and forums this year for Cat.

But by all means, let the rumors continue! Good news is, after a few years of a narrowing lineup, in MY22 Cat returns every favorite from last year, along with some high-tech options that really make the good stuff even better. With an array of new packages, color choices, and more across the lineup (many of which are absent the typical Arctic Cat Green color scheme), these sleds are sure to please a massive array of buyers.

Dealers were forced to do some creative ordering to get models on their floor, but even at that, it was difficult to find many models to view in a local showroom. With the limited options for fall snowmobile shows, many prospective buyers have only seen last year’s models at a glance, while passing them on the trails. But don’t fear, in 2022 we will see return of the in-season models again. Dealers and procrastinators can now rejoice!

ALL HAIL THE KING! THE THUNDERCAT JUST MIGHT BE THE BEST GROOMED TRAIL SLED OF 2022.

THUNDERCAT EPS TAMES A LION The big news for trail riders is the new EPS system available on the ZR 9000 Thundercat. The all-new system is a Textron design, claimed to be based on their ATV technology - but with tweaks specifically for the ‘King of Fast’ on the snow. Its variable assist gives more power at slow speeds, and takes into account speed and other variables as you move along the trail. This delivers truly consistent turning ability, no matter how fast or slow you are moving. Many folks have asked us - why would you need power steering on a snowmobile that already handles great? Well, you can always make things better! In reality, this system may add a small amount of weight to the sled, but it makes a large 4-stroke feel like you are on the lightest machine around. It’s truly unbelievable how well it works, and paired with the ATAC suspension and the 998cc turbo EFI triple cylinder motor, it may just be the best all-around trail sled in the industry that’s offered next season. Cat makes your choices simple for MY22, as the Thundercat comes in only

This is also available as an inseason purchase, or as a pre-order. The second ZR 9000 Thundercat EPS package includes all the standard options, plus the upgraded ARS II w/ ATAC suspension, and of course, electric power steering. Don’t try to wait to buy this gem, it’s only available as a pre-order until April 30th. This year, with the Arctic Cat Snomageddon pricing, you essentially get the ATAC and EPS for free versus the normal MSRP of the in-season model. Getting into one of these new Thundercats during their pre-season sale will cost thousands of dollars less than some of the comparable high-horsepower turbos from the other OEMS. It’s a deal that’s way too good to pass up!

TEST RIDER COMMENTS – THUNDERCAT EPS I will double down on any comments that were made by other test riders, and say that the Thundercat with the new electronic power steering is a breeze to ride. It is not your “Grandpa’s sled”! You can ride all day, and ride aggressively, but never get tired and always be in control. This was the best handling Cat trail sled I’ve been on in years. Mark Boncher, Test Rider

NEW! ADAPT® CVT SYSTEM The big tech release from the engineers out of Thief River falls is the all-new ADAPT clutch. Gone are the days of the Team fast clutching; now all full-size sleds will come equipped with Cat’s newest and greatest package. The new design is more lightweight overall. Looking at the sheaves, they are much smaller and narrower, which significantly reduces the rotating mass, giving a very snappy and responsive feeling across the board, to all models it is on. With ADAPT® clutches also comes the ability for automatic belt tensioning - no need to shim anymore to get that perfect alignment. Plus, as your belt wears down, you can count on consistent performance throughout its lifespan, due to its automatic adjustments. This is accomplished by adding an idler bearing that maintains a set, constant tension.

THE RIOT AND RIOT WITH ATAC ARE FUN CROSSOVER SLEDS THAT BALANCE OFF-TRAIL AND ON-TRAIL WELL.

!

THE RIOT’S RETURN- IN A GOOD WAY THIS TIME Back again for their second season are the two 146 Riot crossover options. Choose again from the more trail behaved standard Riot, with the dual slide-rail rear suspension, or for a much more off-trail oriented ride, try the Riot X with the single beam Alpha rear suspension. The standard Riot comes with both options of a C-TEC2 6000 or C-TEC2 8000 motor, ATAC or QS3 suspensions, and choices between the 146”x1.35” or a 146”x1.5” Cobra track. Both come standard with the matte grey and choices of two different accent colors. With the addition of ATAC, it really made this Riot a phenomenal machine on the trails, while keeping its ability to get through deep snow when the situation

presents. We got some extended miles on this as well, as we had a demo unit at the end of the season. Lucky us! The Riot X choices are simpler, with only the C-TEC 8000 motor and the 146”x2.6” Power claw as standard, with the option to choose from ATAC or QS3 suspension packages. You also have color choices of the red on grey, or a new bright orange and hyper green design that will guarantee you will be seen.

THE ZR 120 AND ZR 200 RETURN AGAIN UNCHANGED. THE RIOT X IS ARGUABLY A SHORT TRACK MOUNTAIN SLED. IN SHORT THE RIOT “X” FOCUS IS DEFINITELY MORE OFF TRAIL THAN OFF.

THE BLAST XR IS A GOOD MID SIZE CROSSOVER SLED WITH A 146” TRACK WITH A 1.6” LUG.

ATAC SUSPENSION

Formerly known as iAct, and now properly termed ATAC, this adjust-onthe-fly shock system is a great idea. But be sure you do not pronounce it “A-tac”, and correctly pronounce it as “Attack”. Otherwise, that Karen in your group will definitely call you out. The ATAC is now expanded in the lineup to not only the ZR trail sleds, but the Mountain Cat and Riot as well. The Fox zero shocks with piggyback reservoirs give you three factory configured options (Soft, Medium and Firm), and two custom, rider configurable, saved settings that can be changed with the flip of a toggle. This suspension package really makes for precise handling in different conditions, delivered right on your handlebars, no tools needed!

THE XR ALSO COMES IN A TOURING MODEL THAT REALLY FILLS A VOID IN THE “ENTRY TOURING” AND S “DO ALL SNOWMOBILE”.

MID-SIZE AND YOUTH Returning for ‘22 is the ultra-popular Blast lineup of sleds. Cat certainly underestimated the popularity of these ¾ sized snowmobiles. Evidence can be seen of them being sold out, and the extremely low availability of anything in even remotely good condition. Plus, there’s close to zero used machines in the secondary market, even now at the end of the season. The Blast was a massive hit of nitrous to the family-scene, just when it needed it! All models in this category return again this season, with the addition of the new Blast XR and XR touring. You now have seven choices to choose from that are equipped with the 400cc single lung 2-stroke fuel injected motor. The Blast XR is based on the 2021 LT models with the 15” x 146” x 1.5” track, but with a sportier look, sans the large windshield and rear cargo rack.

Need room for one more? The XR Touring package comes with all the options as the standard XR, plus it is equipped with a rear 2-up seat to carry friends and family along for the ride. We have certainly gushed over these sleds in past editions, but why waste the opportunity to do it again now? If you want to get your kid into snowmobiling, and have a fun toy for yourself after they get to bed, this is a mandatory addition to your fleet. The lightweight chassis, paired with a narrow front end, make these machines just plain, old fashioned fun for all ages. Dads all over the world will be happy that you can now add the option of a front bumper for hood protection during any unfortunate navigation mishaps into obstacles, or even when your son/daughter kisses the rear bumper of your sled. Note, the bumper is only available via the

‘ship-with’ options package, available on all spring buy Blast Models. The ZR 120 and ZR 200 return again unchanged. Both models follow the rest of the full-size trail sled color scheme, with the matte grey plastic and accent colors. The ZR 120 comes only in the standard green, whereas the ZR 200 gives you three choices of accent colors, as well as electric start as standard on all models. The ZR 200 is now returning for its fifth year, and Arctic Cat’s devotion to the youth sleds is certainly paying returns for them, as well as all other OEMs in the industry. Early buyers are now ready to get those kids on full-size sleds, and are doing so in huge numbers. Building brand loyalty at a young age allows for an easy transition to the 400cc Blast, and then the ZR trail machines for this new generation of riders to get out with their friends and family.

If you are an Arctic Cat fan and that’s where you feel at home then you’re in luck because it hasn’t changed a bit Since 2019. That being said not much needs to be done to the Alpha it holds a side hill like no other and still holds its own in the mountains. Jordan Hammack

TRAIL AND MOUNTAIN PERFORMANCE This year, you get three different platforms to choose from, in order to tame the trails. All sleds across the ZR lineup now come only in a 15” x 137” x 1.25” Ripsaw II track configuration, and with electric start as standard. Other options to choose from are limited to the 800 C-TEC2, or the 600 C-TEC2 motors and two different suspension packages. The ZR RR race inspired trail model comes in a historically Cat, bold green color as the only option, and you can get either the 600cc or 800cc motors. With the ZR Limited, you can also have either motor choice with the ARS II w/QS3 package, or select the ZR 8000 Limited as the only model with ATAC. Finally, the aforementioned flagship ZR 9000 Thundercat rounds out as the third option for trail performance. The mountain lineup this season is relatively unchanged, with all models coming standard with the Alpha One rear suspension. Choose from 154”

60

ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 11 • ISSUE 5

or 165” models in the Mountain Cat Alpha One package, standard with ATAC suspension and manual pull starter. There is an option to add push button electric start as an addition to the pull cord though. In the Hardcore, you have the same 154” or 165” choices, but now also have the choice for a shorter 146” skid. All Hardcore models will come with the AMS/QS3 package, but have no availability to add the ATAC. The entire mountain lineup will now have the ADAPT® clutching across the board, and like we said, the option to add the ATAC on either of the Mountain Cat Alpha One configurations.

THE ZR RR RACE INSPIRED TRAIL MODEL COMES IN A HISTORICALLY CAT, BOLD GREEN COLOR AS THE ONLY OPTION, AND YOU CAN GET EITHER THE 600CC OR 800CC MOTORS.

SIMPLY UTILITY The Norseman X is back again with its 15”x153”x2.25” Power Claw track and adjustable 35.5-41.5” ski stance. Again, relatively unchanged from the previous model year, this is the only serious deep-snow capable snowmobile in the Cat lineup, without the single beam Alpha One rear skid. The Norseman X is popular, not just for utility, but also for the flatlanders near the Great Lakes’ snowbelts, who need to traverse several feet of fresh snow in a familiar and easy-to-handle package, for both on and off trail use.
