HAPPY HOLIDAYS – LET IT SNOW!!
THE
Winter ATV season has begun, and I’ll tell ya, I don’t mind installing the plows on my ATV and ARGO in the least. I look forward to gearing up and taking them for a ride through the snow, and my son loves to join me. We’ll spend extra time out on the driveway, and we will soon drive out to the ice huts. The way I look at it, I’m already dressed, so why wouldn’t I go for a spin! Last year, my son Eric started riding in the ARGO with me as we plowed the driveway. It’s a great time, so hopefully we’ll get some huge snowfalls this winter. I figure that if I can show him
moving late fall, follow us on facebook to watch the process. @ATC Corral New address: 2 Paisley Lane, Stouffville, ON L4A 7X4 10

the proper way at a young age, and how meticulous I am about how I want the driveway plowed, one day he’ll be able to arm wrestle me for the keys and do it himself. But until he can legally drive, I’ll settle for an engaged co-pilot that’s in charge of the lights, winch, and eventually, someone to help me shovel the stairs. This coming January we have the 41st Annual North American International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW coming up, the weekend of Jan 6-8, 2017, and when I told Eric that we have Dog the Bounty Hunter coming to sign autographs, he flipped. Dog and Beth Chapman will be at the show on Friday and Saturday,

and we have Team Empire lined up to demo some extreme freestyle shows all weekend long. It’s a show for the entire family, Your One-Stop-Shop for everything in Motorcycling! Don’t miss the biggest Motorcycle show of the year, the ‘BIG ONE by the AIRPORT’, The North American International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW, the only motorcycle show you’ll need to attend... Mark your calendars now! Free Parking. Until next time, I’ll be in the shop, behind the bars, making engine sounds with my big guy, and waiting for it to snow… We at ATV WORLD would like to wish you all a safe and Happy Holiday Season!

news OPENING OF BRP’S NEW TRAINING INSTITUTE
01
BRP marked the opening of its state-of-the-art technician training institute, within its Sturtevant, Wisconsin manufacturing facility. This new institute will train dealers and their employees to maintain and repair all BRP vehicles, engines and accessories. Alain Villemure, Vice President and General Manager of BRP’s Marine Propulsion Systems division and Martin Soucy, Vice President of its global, after-sales function, participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony before employees, media, and the general public. “BRP’s seven product lines are sold in over 100 countries through 4,200 dealers,” said Soucy. “We continue to implement a series of initiatives that allow BRP to remain a reference in the powersports industry worldwide. This training institute, one of five that cover our regions across five continents, is a focused investment to better equip our U.S. network to deliver excellent customer service.” “We are grateful to the Village of Sturtevant and the Racine County Economic Development Corporation, for their support in the creation of this world-class training institute that has allowed us to create and secure over 20 full-time positions. The new institute will bring around 500 visitors a year to the region,” said Villemure. “The Evinrude brand has a storied relationship with South Eastern Wisconsin, and BRP is excited to open up this new chapter.” Technicians from dealerships all over North and South America will be fully trained and certified on all Ski-Doo, SeaDoo, Rotax and Can-Am products in this new institute, alongside the existing Evinrude training center.

YAMAHA SUPPORTED 2016 ATV AND SIDE-BY-SIDE 03 RACERS DOMINATE Yamaha supported racers dominated the leading national and regional Side-bySide (SxS) and ATV racing series in 2016, aboard the YXZ1000R pure sport SxS, and class-leading YFZ450R sport ATV. The exciting season was recently capped with Yamaha-supported factory racers Dustin Nelson and Corry Weller claiming the top two spots in the Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Racing Series (LORORS) of Arizona, and the recent Lucas Oil Racing Shootout. This past weekend, Nelson and Weller were named champion and runner-up, respectively, of the Production 1000 class in the Arizona LORORS. Following his LORORS championship in the Southern California series, Nelson finished the Arizona LORORS with seven wins, never falling below second place. Combined with Weller’s wins, the YXZ1000R led 9 of 10 rounds, and held the top two spots on the podium in eight. The two racers also took the top in-class positions in this year’s Lucas Oil Racing Shootout, with Nelson finishing in first. In October, Nelson also won Arizona’s LORORS Challenge Cup in the Production 1000 UTV class, while piloting the YXZ1000R. Weller also won The Off-Road Championship (TORC) series last month, in the series’ first ever Pro Stock UTV Championship. Weller’s victory at TORC marked the YXZ1000R’s first national championship, as well as the first championship won by a woman in any TORC class. In addition, three-time PRO 2WD, and current PRO 4WD championship truck driver C.J. Greaves, drove a YXZ in the final TORC round and Cup Race in Crandon, Wisconsin, sweeping the weekend in the Pro Stock UTV class, and capping a dominating presence in the series. Winning his fifth straight ATV motocross (MX) championship, AMA Pro ATV champion Chad Wienen made history this year, becoming the second all-time greatest racer in ATV MX history. In Wienen’s five years of ATV MX racing, he won a total of 30 rounds, while placing on the podium in all 52 rounds he competed in, aboard his Wienen Motorsports/SSI YFZ450R. Bringing another win for the YFZ450R, N-Fab/Am-Pro/Moto-XPerts Yamahasponsored Walker Fowler won his second straight Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) championship in the XC1 Pro ATV class, at only 23 years of age. Fowler dominated with a significant lead throughout the season.

NEW ITP MUD LITE II TIRE SUPPLIES RELENTLESS PERFORMANCE
06
05
ITP unveiled the Mud Lite II multi-terrain tire for ATV and side-by-side vehicles. The Mud Lite II features a next generation design with an allnew profile, carcass, tread compound and pattern. New from the ground up, the multi-purpose Mud Lite II’s new tread design mixes specially designed lug patterns in strategic locations on the carcass, to create sure-footed traction in the mud, as well as stability and comfort on the trails. TRAIL PROPERTIES To provide a smooth ride on the trail, ITP engineers designed Mud Lite II tires, with a variable, open-lug tread design, to enhance traction over a variety of trail surfaces. To minimize tire flex, increase support and reduce wear, the Mud Lite II tire has unique “tendons” that connect and stretch between the tire’s lugs. The centerline dimpled, v-shaped lugs enhance traction on the trail, while the lug height and positioning makes for an incredibly smooth ride on hard pack. The new multi-terrain Mud Lite II carries a robust 6-ply rating, and the lug height varies from ¾-inch to 1 1/8-inch, depending on the size. The tire’s shoulder also features an enhanced tread treatment for added sidewall protection and grip. MUD PROPERTIES Dimpled center lugs and a re-engineered chevron pattern provide massive forward traction in the mud. This tread design improves bite and enhances the tire’s self-cleaning capabilities. The tire’s shoulder features an innovative mud breaker tread design, which sits slightly raised on the tire between the taller chevron lugs, to channel debris and reduce the dreaded, horsepower-robbing suction drag in muddy terrain. The Mud Lite II is available in the following sizes: 25x8-12, 25x10-12, 26x9-12, 26x11-12, 27x9-12, 27x11-12, 27x9-14, 27x11-14, 28x9-14, 28x11-14, 30x9-14 and 30x11-14. MSRP pricing will range from $90 $190, depending on tire size. The Mud Lite II will arrive in dealerships in December 2016.

YAMAHA MOTOR FINANCE LAUNCHES NEW CREDIT CARD PROGRAM Yamaha announced it has launched an all-new credit card program that is available through all Yamaha dealers, starting November 1, 2016. This important, Yamaha-exclusive, consumer financing tool is replacing an outgoing program that had been managed by various banks over the last 20 years. The new program provides an easy to use application process, and instant approvals to qualifying customers when they are considering a new purchase, and the revolving line of credit provided by the card translates to repeat purchases. YMFUS is supporting the card with low, attractive special financing promotions, and expects the new program to serve as the primary financing source for many of Yamaha’s products, including Motorcycles, ATV’s, Side-by-Side vehicles and Personal Watercraft. YMUS launched Yamaha Motor Finance last year to initially focus on first-time and limited credit buyers, enabling its dealers to expand their business in a segment underserved by traditional banks and lenders. This new credit card program will allow Yamaha Motor Finance to expand its focus to “Prime” consumers, and take over a program that has provided financing solutions to more than one million customers. Yamaha Motor Finance has expanded its staff at its headquarters in Cypress, California, to manage the new program. The credit cards will be issued by WebBank, Member FDIC.

CAN-AM ADDS DESERT RACER MATT BURROUGHS Can-Am off-road has added “Monster” Matt Burroughs to its 2017 Can-Am racing team. Burroughs will compete in the 2017 Best in the Desert (BITD) racing series, as well as both the legendary Baja 500 and Baja 1000, with the new Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R side-by-side vehicle, which supplies 154 horsepower and up to 24 inches of suspension travel, in stock form. PRESENTS RESENTS
Don’t be shy, this is your last chance to enter to win with KFI! Our feature column, “Dude I’m Stuck”, presented by KFI Products, has received a steady stream of hilarious and mud filled entries. Again this month we’ve chosen 1 in particular to feature for this issue, which definitely deserves to make the books. Thank you for your submissions, and you will all be entered in to the big draw. The story behind this segment is very simple; your buddies are always getting stuck and looking like Jack-wagons or goons when they’re riding, unlike yourself who is always professional. Well Mister Professional start taking pictures. Catch a few pictures or a video of your buddies getting winched, pushed, or pulled out and your picture might wind up in these pages of ATV World Magazine as part of our “Dude I’m Stuck” series. With your submission you will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a KFI SE45 Stealth winch.
Here's how to get involved
Just send us a photo of yourself or a friend getting stuck to info@atvworldmag.com, and give us a little background on where you were and how you managed to get yourself stuck. In each issue of ATV World, the top entries will be chosen and published either in print or on-line. The top three entries will then be placed into a draw to take place February 2017 for the chance to win a KFI SE45 Stealth Winch, courtesy of KFI Products. The Winner will appear in our next issue. ATV World Magazine, Outback Publishing Canada Inc., KFI Products, RKP Inc., and any other affiliate companies, require no one submit any pictures or videos of themselves or others performing any dangerous or illegal activities, they will not be considered or entered. In addition all riders must be wearing a helmet.

SEMA: The 50th Anniversary ATV World headed down to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Worlds Largest Automotive show, Marking SEMA’s 50th Year. This year’s SEMA was certainly the one to be at, as over the past few years SEMA has been adding more to the Off-Road section that features everything from wheels, paint, performance, and off-road parts and accessories; basically a ton of stuff that had our heads spinning. From outside to inside, the number of custom buggies was staggering. To follow are a few of our favorite pics from the show. The show is over 2.7 million sqft, so be prepared to walk. WOLVERINE
WOLVERINE (X-MEN) We all know the character WOLVERINE from X-MAN! But here are somethings you might not know about the famous, MUTANT. Wolverine came into appearance in 1974 (The Incredible Hulk #181). He is said to have been captured by a secret Canadian organization that gave him his ability to heal from any wound, retract claws, and carry an unbreakable skeleton structure. Over the years Wolverine has mastered every fighting style from his years as a C.I.A operative, samurai, spy, X-men member, former Captain in the Canadian armed forces, and mercenary days. All in all I believe that this is a WIN for Canadians on the mutant scale, EH!
2017 YAMAHA WOLVERINE
This is a machine anyone would want to be aboard on your off-road adventures in the forest, or on the trail. The 2017 Yamaha Wolverine R-Spec will make you feel invincible on the trails with its compact look that’s gives it top handling performance through any terrain. The R-Spec features top upgrades like soft grip steering wheel, bead-lock wheels, A-arm protection, underseat storage and more. Yamaha’s all new 708cc engine, with its 4-wheel limited slip and 4-wheel full differential locking system that will CLAW through any muddy condition that you can put it through.

WOLVERINE THE ANIMAL
One animal you would not want to cross in the forest or be caught near its territory, is the Wolverine. The Wolverine is part of the weasel family but resembles a small bear. This weasel can reach an overall length of 6-ft and weight up to 40lbs. With it’s swift and agile ability it is known to take down larger animals like deer and caribou. Luckily the wolverine is only found in the northern part of Russia, Europe, Asia and Canada, so you wont run in to them on your walks through the park.. hopefully.
AT-6 WOLVERINE
The AT-6 Wolverine was introduced in 2009 and was most noted for its close air action, light attack missions, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. The AT-6 has the ability to attach 66 different load configurations and was the first fixedwing aircraft to attach a 2.75`` laser- guided rocket to its wing. In the fighter plane world the AT-6 Wolverine is on the top of the charts. With its turboprop engine its capable of taking its 5,890lb body weight to a speed of 592.6km / 368.2m per hour. So if you ever look up in the sky and you see a turboprop fighter jet with shark like teeth on the noise of the plane, I suggest you get out of that location FAST!
1995 YAMAHA WOLVERINE 350
Let’s go back in time a bit to the first sport/utility ATV to really push the market to where we are today. The 1995 Yamaha Wolverine 350 was one of the first models to be considered a sport/utility machine and it did just that. With its 350cc engine, suspension travel increase, and motor displacement it stood out from the pack. After many years of production and upgrades, like the 450cc engine, the wolverine was discontinued in 2010, with its latest model looking like a utility Yamaha Raptor.

A “LIGHT” SUBJECT
This
issue, I would like to shed some light (no pun intended) on changes to the different types of illumina on that ATVs have had over the years. Originally the ligh ng system was only on ATVs to allow nigh me opera on if required, but now, we find all types of lights accessorizing our machines, which not only personalizes them, but in most cases, making night riding that much safer. So…. How does a basic light bulb work? The most common type of light we have on our ATVs and other recrea onal equipment is referred to as an “incandescent” light bulb. It
uses electrical energy to excite atoms to produce things called “photons”. Photons are simply light energy. A typical incandescent light bulb is constructed with a thin walled glass envelop or bulb. Inside the sealed bulb you will find it filled with an inert gas such as argon or nitrogen. Also housed inside the bulb is the electrical circuit, and depending on the type of light, it will have one or two filaments. The filament is a resistor that is made to glow when ba ery current flows through it. This filament is made of tungsten, and it will heat to a white hot temperature of approximately 2,500 ⁰C (4,500 ⁰F). When a metal is heated to this type of temperature, it will emit both heat and visible light in a reac on known as incandescence. The visible light energy is radiated as photons. This type of light will last un l the tungsten in the filament finally vaporizes and the filament melts and the bulb burns out. So let’s talk some basic terminology. Candlepower: Although this is some mes used as a generic term when ra ng lights, it most o en is confused with the brightness of a light. In reality, it is a ra ng only found in spot type lights, referring to the concentra on of the light beam, and only applies to a small spot in the center of the beam. It is more about how far the light beam shines, rather than its brightness.
Some “Ground Effect” LED lighting might not always be practical but it does always look cool.
Here we can compare the old reliable Incandescent 1157 bulb and the new LED version of it.
A LED light bar not only will light up the night for you, it will personalize you ATV with some WOW Factor.

Brightness: For the most part, brightness is an expression that generally refers to the amount of light emi ed. It is however, not an official term used in the ligh ng industry or trade, but the concept of the word is essen al for understanding visual quality as it relates to contrast and glare. The closest industry term to brightness would be “luminance”. Luminance: The defini on of luminance is basically the direc on of light emission, the direc on you are looking at the illuminated object, and has nothing to do with the size of the light emi ng surface. Lumens: A lumen is the unit of total light output from a light source. An example would be the wa age of incandescent household lightbulbs. A 60 wa incandescent lightbulb puts out somewhere between 800 – 900 lumens, while a 150 wa incandescent lightbulb puts out approximately 2200 lumens. Light Density: This term is measured in units known as “Foot-candles” which are the older units based on English measurements. It is equal to one lumen per square foot. This measurement is gradually being phased out by the metric version of measurement of one lumen per square meter known as a “lux”. The conversion is 1 foot-candle is equal to 10.76 lux. Think of it as the concentraon of light that reflects on a surface.
This “projection” lens can focus a light beam from a light source a long why down the road much like a spot light but in a much smaller size.
The incandescent light has been around for a long me, and as with any device, its basic design has been improved upon over the years. It is however, being replaced with other types of lights. Let’s look at some of these new light designs. Halogen Lights: These types of lights are probably the most well-known headlight replacements. Halogen lights use tungsten filaments, like its cousin the incandescent bulb. The way it operates though is a li le different by using a thermal radia on principle, and has a different construc on. The tungsten is encased in a small quartz envelop. Inside the quartz envelop are halogen gases (iodine or bromine) that have the characteris c of combining with tungsten vapor. What this does is when the light is at opera ng temperature, the halogen gases combine with the tungsten atoms as they vaporize, and then redeposit them back onto the filament. This recycling of the vaporized tungsten will greatly extend the life cycle of the bulb (as compared to the incandescent bulb). The halogen filament can also be run at higher temperatures, therefore giving more light per unit of energy consumed. Light-Emiমng Diodes (LEDS): To say that these lights have revolu onized the light industry would be an understatement. You can find them in every applica on where light is a part of our lives.
This signal light lens can take the light from an incandescent bulb and disperse it at different rates. The center is very bright while the outside would appear as small pin lights. The advantage of a clear lens is that whatever color of bulb is used, the lens will transfer that color. In this case it is amber.
From a safety perspec ve, an LED will illuminate (at .1 second) much faster than an incandescent light bulb (at .25 second). You are probably thinking what’s the big deal? Well, in a brake light applica on at 100 KPH, that translates into about 20 feet of extra stopping distance. Looking at it from a power point of view, the LED has a much lower current demand. Comparing an LED taillight to a comparable incandescent bulb, the LED only requires .5 of an amp, while the incandescent bulb requires about 2 amps. Last but not least, due to their design, their life expectancy is es mated to be in the tens of thousands of hours. Reflector Design: Besides the lights, there have been a lot of changes to the housing assembly the bulbs fit into. Most headlight reflectors are being designed to be “parabolic”, (have an even conical recess) so that light beams leaving the light bulb are reflected out in parallel beams, to concentrate the emitted light from the headlamp assembly. Lens Design: The lens assembly is used to disperse the light rays, either directly from the bulb or reflected by the parabolic reflector. This means the lens refracts light from the reflector to achieve the desired distribu on pa ern on the road ahead of the vehicle. I hope that this will help brighten your day (or at least your night).
The unique design of the headlight reflector is known as “parabolic”. It takes the light of a single bulb and sends many parallel beams of light from the “reflector axis” in such a manner as to effectively illuminate the area in front of the operator. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 5

ATV WORLD’S FAST FRAME FIX
If
you push your Polaris XP to its limits, a broken radius rod, CV axle, or even both at the same time is a pretty common failure. Most of the time, the broken part is just that, but sometimes we don’t get that lucky. On more than one occasion, we’ve had a broken radius rod take out the axle, and then had the broken axle stabbing violently into our RZR XP 1000’s frame. It’s quite the heartbreaker to witness, and you definitely don’t want to replace your whole chassis. We experimented unsuccessfully at trying to patch it with welding on half wraps, braces, etc., etc. It took an epiphany during a long boring drive to come up with a proper fix. I literally had to stop what I was doing and drive to a Polaris shop to verify the thought process and that it would work. What’s worse is that it was so simple, and had been overlooked up until now.
1 When a broken axle gets the chance to get destructive like this, you’re pretty much going to have to cut out the bad, and replace it with new tubing. The problem with cutting out a whole section and replacing it, is that you can’t properly weld around the inside without removing the transmission. The best option we found was to insert a slip tube up from the bottom, and weld it out to the existing frame.
38
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 5
2 The first step is to remove the suspension components and any wires, cables, or components that are in the way. You need to cut away and remove the damaged frame material. We used a plasma cutter because we had access, but you could easily do this with a cut off wheel. With the damaged material removed, you need to remove all paint and contaminants from the area to be welded.
4 You need a 10”-12” piece of steel tubing that fits snugly inside the frame tube. We found a piece of 1.5” DOM to fit pretty well. You will slide your new piece up into the frame, from the opening in the bottom of the tube. Now it is time to weld in the rosettes, and then weld out the entire perimeter of the repair.
3 You should then drill three or four 3/8” to ½” holes in the frame for rosette welds. We drilled two above the damage and one below it. You will want to drill with a smaller pilot bit first, and then step up to the larger bit. You will want use a grinder or sanding wheel to remove any paint from around the rosette holes as well.
5 Your finished product should look something like this, and with the added strength of the thicker wall tubing, your repair should be better than new. It is a good idea to mask off your nearby exposed parts and spray paint the bare tubing and welds to match, and fight off any future rust issues.

POLARIS DROPS THE MOST
THE RZR XP TURBO is an incredible Off-Road machine, is incredibly fast, and handles like a performance racecar. For the most part, when it came to handling, the RZR XP chassis was on point from the beginning. The shocks have seen some significant improvement, and they added the front sway bar on FOX equipped models. With the Turbo Edition, Polaris was already owning the class with RZR XP, and then added a ton more HP and increased the fun factor by turbocharging it.

2017 POLARIS RZR XP TURBO EPS Upon its release, the 2016 RZR XP Turbo was the fastest and best handling UTV ever made, but it wasn’t without issues. Right off the bat, the 2016 RZR XP Turbo started showing signs of its cooling issues, especially when driven in ho er climates, and/or aggressively in so er terrain. As its inaugural season wore on, a handful of other issues and oversights would arise as well. Then along comes the 2017 RZR XP Turbo with 168 HP, and instead of a completely new pla orm to compete with Can Am’s new Maverick X3, Polaris took the already great RZR Turbo, turned up the boost and refined it beyond belief. The ‘17 17 model looks to have addressed and fixed every issue we have witnessed on the ‘16, as well as improving the handling with a quicker steering ra o.

WHAT’S NEW The 2017 RZR XP Turbo features the same engine as the previous year, but Polaris has turned up the boost and fueling to make 24 more HP than the previous model year. This is a 15% increase and 9% more than the newly released, class leading Maverick X3. The ‘17 Turbo gets a new, higher capacity head gasket to work with increased boost, and a higher flow fuel pump and injectors to feed it. New intake and exhaust cams are used as well. This set up not only creates more HP, it also creates massive amounts of bo om end grunt and torque that really improves the off-road drivability. The ‘17 model provides 95% of its available torque from 5000 to 8000 RPM. This means it runs really hard, right out of the gate, and keeps pulling to its class leading 114 -lbs of torque. Polaris engineers created an engine package that has all the low end power you could want, and combines it

to the ground. While the internal bypass FOX suspension remains untouched, the new quicker steering ra o really improves handling as well. The most visible change to the cooling system is the new 40% larger, high flow front grill. The ever-important cooling system also gets a new more powerful, variable-speed, brushless fan and a 20% larger engine radiator. The ECU also instructs the fan to come on earlier at a lower temp than the previous years, but is similar to the latest re-flash that most will get from their dealer. The higher flow, brushless fan is actually a lot quieter than the previous fan, and you will barely even know it’s running. The CVT clutching on the ‘16 Turbo was upgraded to handle the addi onal power, but it s ll showed some heat related issues, especially in the sand or high-speed desert situa ons. Polaris further addressed this on the ‘17 as well. The newest Turbo rendi on gets new taller CVT air intake vents that actually draw from both sides, for a whole bunch more airflow and poten al cooling. The CVT cover has been redesigned to fit closer to the trans as well. This cover and the new intakes are said to lower clutch opera ng temps by 30 degrees. The clutch uses sheave
spacers to accept a new stronger and thicker belt, and the sliders in the primary now have stainless steel sheaves to fight premature wear. The en re drive train on the ‘16 Turbo was beefed up for the increased HP, but we s ll saw quite a few CV axle failures throughout the year as well. For ‘17 Polaris engineers went with even bigger CV joints on the rear axles, which should all but eliminate the probability of failure. The other common rear end failure associated with all RZR XP’s was the radius rods, and their connec ng bolts. Polaris engineers upgraded the rear radius rods to larger, hollow tubes for increased strength and reduced weight over the previous solid rod design. The bigger news on the new radius rod set up is that they have stepped the moun ng hardware up from 10mm bolts up to 12mm bolts, which should prove to be a great upgrade for every other RZR XP in existence. The new steering ra o we men oned is accomplished with a new steering rack and heavier duty, different geometry e rod ends. This should not only eliminate the e rod week link, but also means you can properly set up for a slide, without having to cross your hands over one another. We have used this steering ra o with an a ermarket quickener, and it requires less hand movement, making the machine much easier to drive aggressively. The interior of the newest Turbo got a few small, but important upgrades as well. The “old school” round analog speedometer gauge is gone, and a newly shaped digital LCD one replaces it. The func ons are s ll the same, but it is much easier to navigate through its opons. The igni on key also looks the same, but has an added posi on for accessory use. This allows one to conserve power while using tunes, lights or other 12V accessories, without having the ECU charged or the fan components running.
The drive-train is beefed up to match the increased engine performance. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 5

DRIVE TIME We just got back from a weekend long test of the new 2017 RZR XP Turbo in the Glamis sand dunes. The ‘17 Turbo claims to make an addi onal 24 HP, and you can feel it immediately. Right out of camp you can feel the difference in comparison to the previous model, but what is more impressive than the brute HP increase is the torque and delivery. This latest XP Turbo rendi on has really smoothed out the power curve and go en rid of the turbolag felt on most every other turbocharged UTV on the market. The power comes on lower and smoother than ever before, and con nues to pull to an incredible top speed. We had our test unit pushing a previously unheard of 83-84 mph in the straights. It is incredibly fast all the way across the power curve, almost hard to believe you’re driving a stock vehicle.

THE 2016 TURBO IN OUR GROUP WENT INTO LIMP MODE TWICE ON A LONG DUNE EXCURSION The newfound HP really seems to be available in all the right places. Driving around in the smaller and ghter dunes was a blast, but it was also right at home drag racing up Oldsmobile Hill, even with a couple of kids in the back seat. The
clutching feels spot on in the sand, and we didn’t see one person changing a blown belt, with probably 20 cars and two days of hard duning. While abnormally hot for Halloween weekend, the day me temperatures were pushing mid-nine es, and none of the cars were overhea ng either. The 2016 Turbo in our group went into limp mode twice on a long dune excursion, and the ‘17’s never saw much more than 200 degrees. The quicker steering ra o is definitely an improvement, but less of an advantage in the wide-open dunes than it is on ght trails or any kind of off-road course. We no ced it a lot more in the ghter, smaller dunes right by camp, than we did on any of the longer excursions out into the big dunes.

UPGRADING A 16’ MODEL From the outside looking in, it may seem like 2016 owners are ge ng the short end of the s ck with all these factory induced improvements and refinements. On the other side of that coin, they were also the first ones to get to enjoy a factory turbocharged RZR, and there will always be upgrades and design breakthroughs in this industry. Luckily for those current XP Turbo owners, almost every ‘17 upgrade can be updated onto your ‘16 model, and some of them even fall under a Polaris good faith recall. If you are having repeated hea ng or clutching issues with your 2016 Turbo, Polaris has been proving to have your back. The front fascia, with larger opening and grill, can be updated to a ‘17 model with minimal effort. The more powerful fan will fit as well, but you will need a bus bar wiring kit for it as well. The updated fan kit will run you about $350, but we’ve heard rumor of Polaris including it in the recall on machines that show previous overhea ng issues in their ECU’s memory. The 20% larger radiator will not fit a 2016
machine without a whole bunch of fabrica on work, as Polaris actually widened the front of the frame to make room for it. With stock 2016 boost and fuel levels, the bigger fan and wider grill will undoubtedly keep your machine properly cooled. If you are running re-flashed ECU’s, and higher HP numbers in ho er climates, you might need to look at radiator op ons. The clutching upgrades will all directly bolt onto a ‘16 RZR Turbo as well. The larger intake clutch scoops and stainless steel wear bushings have seemingly found their way into the recall package on some of the XPT’s with clutch issues. And we’re pre y sure the new and improved 2017 clutch cover will bolt on as well. The clutches should also be modifiable to fit the newer wider, and thicker CVT belt. Upgrading just the intake scoops and clutch cover should bring clutch-opera ng temps. down around 30 degrees. In our experience, thirty degrees will make a huge difference in belt life and overall clutch durability.
IF YOU ARE HAVING REPEATED HEATING OR CLUTCHING ISSUES WITH YOUR 2016 TURBO, POLARIS HAS BEEN PROVING TO HAVE YOUR BACK.
The newest XP and XP4 Turbo RZR’s come in two great new colorway’s.

FINAL THOUGHTS If you want the highest HP, factory stock UTV, buy the 2017 RZR XP Turbo. The 2017 model’s 168 HP is rela vely cheap to acquire as well, with an ECU reflash and other intake upgrades. Where the difference really lies on the ‘17 model, is being able to run pump gas, and retain a two year factory warranty. All in all, they are both great machines, and almost everything that we have discovered to be a weak link or issue on the 2016 model has been successfully addressed on this latest model. TireJect A More Intelligent Tire Sealant
Quick fix tire sealants have been around for nearly as long as off-roaders have been pushing rocks and sticks through the face and sidewalls of tires. Most feature a substance that is thick, gooey, and frankly messy. What’s more, they can be difficult to clean-up afterwards and worse, they leave a sticky gumbo inside, creating a real headache when you look to make a long-term, permanent fix back at the shop. Thus, when we stumbled upon the milky substance called TireJect while making the rounds at a tradeshow last winter, we were more than a little intrigued. The consistency of the formula was downright runny compared to other tire sealants, and we became glossy-eyed as the pitchman behind the counter simply wiped up the residue with a wet cloth. What is this wizardry?!
The pitchman was Brandon Ragan, the son of Phillip, who together make up the father son combo behind TireJect. Unlike typical tire-sealants which rely on a glue-like substance to adhere to the tire, and thereby attempt to seal punctures and cracks, TireJect utilizes the power of Dupont™ Kevlar® fibers that are suspended in a watery substance that can best be described a light blue milk. It seems nearly impossible that it can seal a tire, but we watched in dismay as Brandon easily injected a small amount into a tire, gave it few quick rotations, and then continually punctured the inflated tire with an oversized nail. After each stab, there was a brief hiss followed by silence. With that, we grabbed ourselves a few kits, which come with everything you need to get the job done, and headed to the shop.
THE EFFECTIVENESS AND EASE OF USE OF TIREJECT IS ALMOST
TOO GOOD TO BELIEVE.
While we told Brandon we had a few ATV tires back at the shop to “fix”, we left out a few details, such as the tires were well used ATC tires for a restoration project, and had seen much better days after being left to rot in the sun for several years. These tires have long been out of production and are nearly impossible to find. Most are dry-rotted beyond repair, and their unique “hub-less” design also means you can’t repair using traditional methods. The rears only had slow puncture leaks, but the front was a different story. A swap meet find for a measly ten bucks, the face had several large dry rot cracks, including one smack dab in the middle nearly 3/8 of an inch wide and several inches long. Brandon set us up with two 16-ounce pouches of TireJect, enough to repair up to four ATV tires, and an easy to use injector applicator.
56
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 5
The step-by-step instructions for tire repair are simple, straightforward, and printed on the back of every pouch of sealant.
As with most sealant applications, the first step is to remove the valve core assembly. TireJect includes a simple plastic valve core removal tool with each kit. This is something every on-the-trail tool roll bag should have, and you can purchase a metal version at most dealerships, hardware stores, or at automotive parts counters for just a few bucks.
After giving the easy to open TireJect pouches a good shake to ensure the Kevlar fibers are well mixed and suspended within the mixture, we followed the recommend dosage guidelines for the tire size and type of repair by pouring the mixture into the injector. The super thin and low flowing resistance of the formula makes it easy to pour, and if you do spill, it’s water soluble for easy clean up with a wet rag.
The free-flowing consistency of the formula makes it super easy to inject into the tire. Simply screw the end of the applicator onto the valve stem, and within seconds all the formula is inside the tire.
With the sealant inside the tire, replace the valve core and grab an air chuck.
LEFT: Inflate the tire to recommended pressure; in our case, since these oldschool ATC tires operate at a super low pressure of just 2-3 pounds, we overinflated the tire to ensure it was well rounded, making it easier to rotate and disperse the TireJect formula throughout the inner tire surface.

TireJect A More Intelligent Tire Sealant
58
With the tire inflated, we gave it a few trips across the shop floor, rotating the tire and moving it from side to side. After pushing the tire down and back, the large dry rot crack in the face of the tire quickly slowed from a gush of air to a slow hiss. A few more rotations and the hissing stopped. We added a few more pounds of air, left the tire sitting with the crack at the bottom to ensure the formula would penetrate, and soon it was sealed.
Fast forward a month and the tire is still holding air at the overinflated pressure of 10-pounds. We treated both rear tires as well, and all three are sealed and ready to be mounted to our ATC 90 restoration project.
The effectiveness and ease of use of TireJect is almost too good to believe. Unlike other sealant products, the repair is permanent, and you can also inject the formula into a perfectly good tire to protect it from future leaks for up to a year. After that, you simply inject a half-application into the tire each subsequent year to continue the protection. The formula also seals pesky bead leaks on rusted or bent rims, and unlike goop type sealants, TireJect requires a much smaller dosage, up to 75% less. A typical ATV or side-by-side tire only requires 8-ounces, (we pumped in 10-ounces into our dry rot ATC tires for good measure) whereas “traditional” sealants require 23-32 ounces per tire. Obviously, Brandon and Phillip know they have a good
thing with TireJect; the formula is patented, and they back it up with a 100% guarantee that it will fix your flat tire or they will refund your money. The website provides a lot more detail on the science behind TireJect as well as application guidelines, how-to videos, and of course, product ordering details. They offer complete kits in both standard and pro versions, ranging in price from $24.95 (US) to $59.95 (US), along with refill pouches ranging from 8-ounces all the way up to gallon jugs. A 32-ounce kit gives you everything you need to treat 4 ATV tires and costs just $45.95 (US). CFMOTO HAS BEEN PUSHING the throttle pretty hard over the past few years, and we have been really enjoying the fruits of their labour. This year when the folks over at CFMoto Canada asked if we would like to be part of a “bike build”, using some aftermarket accessories they have available for the flagship ZForce 800EX, they hadn’t finished asking the question when we replied with a resounding YES…Say no more, we are in! The ZForce 800EX is CFMotos latest
and greatest sport Side by Side, and seemed the perfect buggy to start the build off with. First off, the stock buggy has a lot going for it. The EPS works really well, proving you’ll get through the ght trails with ease. The 62+ HP motor, stock from the dealer, has got some nice growl down below and has some pre y aggressive giddy-up when you push the thro le down. The impressive 60” stance keeps the buggy planted nicely and offers up cornering confidence when you are running at top speed. Some of the features of the 800EX that immediately had us cha ng were the display screen, which gives you all the informa on you need in a single glance, the turn signals which is a really nice op on, (shows that CFMoto is thinking to the future of the sport) and the 12v power point built into the dash just makes sense for all the electronics that people are bringing out on the trail with them. Overall, the 800EX is a solid machine, and that being said, there are always small tweaks and adjustment that could make it a bit be er. One is that we’d like to see a larger drain hole in the foot wells. Get into some deep water with this buggy and it takes a long me for the foot wells to clear, and you constantly need to clean the swamp mess from the overly small hole. As for seat adjustment, CFMoto did put an adjustment on the 800EX, but it is not on the fly, and it requires tools to adjust the seat. It’s not that big of a deal, but we thought it was worth men oning. What we did do was adjust one midway and one full back, because what the CFMoto designers did was to make the driver seat universal for a passenger, so if you are swapping between a short guy and a tall guy, you just take yyour seat with yyou. We did a full review of the 800EX last spring, (head over to www.atvworldmag.com and click on the “Missed an Issue Icon, and you’ll find it in the issue 12.2) so the purpose of this ar cle is to take it to the next level and show you factory offered parts and accessories that add bling, power, and growl the ZForce 800EX. From a front bumper to a rear bumper and everything in between, the parts described here are all available at CFMoto Canada and are backed by the factory. For complete details, head over to www.cfmoto.ca and click on the Accessories Tab. You wont be disappointed.

ROOF One of the first accessories to look at when considering bolt-on modifica ons is always a roof. It was one of the rela vity cheaper mods on this build, but offered up huge benefits. It keeps you dry when it’s wet, and cool when the sun is blazing. The CFMoto roof is pre y slick and comes with a stamped logo on the front, so it gives it a real factory look to the overall modifica on. The install is a breeze; a few bolts and you are now protected from the elements. MSRP C$459.00
WINDSHIELD This one had mixed reviews from our test drivers. The half windshield, by design, is meant to push the air and dust up over the face of the driver. The problem is that if you are ver cally challenged, and sit a bit shorter in the seat, the top of the windshield lands directly in the line of sight. Talk to a taller driver and they love the deflec on proper es this windshield has to offer. The install is pre y easy with the supplied brackets, but the trick is to get it set and then check the level from the center before ghtening down the brackets.

BACK BUMPER This was a really nice addi on to the ZForce. Not too o en does the rear side of a buggy get bling. The back bumper matches all the roll bars we have added, and follows the lines around the taillights and rear access to the exhaust perfectly. Again, the install on this bar is a simple few bolts. The bar system uses a supplied 2.25” spacer bolt/nut combo that offsets the bar backwards from the frame. One trick is not to over ghten the bolt. The bolt is only designed to add some inches, and is not a torque bolt. Snug it to the frame, and then ghten the bar to the spacer bolt. C$ 379.00
PERFORMANCE CLUTCH KIT Of course, you can’t do a build without adding some Horsepower to the machine. CFMoto has put together a full Performance Clutch Kit that includes a Two Brothers Racing exhaust pipe, a Dynojet fuel injec on management system, and a new clutch. The install of the pipe is really easy. You will need a pair of spring pullers to make it even easier, and the Dynojet fuel mapping is a simple plug and play applica on. There are some updates that should be done to the Dynojet, so make sure you have access to a PC that is connected to the Internet, to make sure you have the most recent setup. The Clutch, we would say, does need some engine knowledge before you a empt the install. The kit requires a new output sha and adaptor, so all engine fluids need to be drained, and you’ll need a shop press to pop the clutch sha . If that makes you nervous, then we definitely suggest your local CFMoto dealer do the clutch kit. Once the Performance Clutch Kit was installed, there was an immediate feeling of increased horsepower at the throttle, and the Two Brother Pipe added a really cool, but not annoying growl to the ZForce 800. A FEW TRICKS WHEN INSTALLING THE DOORS IS TO USE A RATCHET STRAP BETWEEN THE TWO FRONT DOWN POLES OF THE ROLL BAR
DOORS This is one of the bigger investments to the build, however ver it totally changed the machine. The doors added funcধon, protecধon n and a serious look cool value to our ZForce. The doors are designed like e most, with a latch and pin system located near the top of the bar. The e install of the doors took the most ধme, but I’ll menধon it again, it was well worth the shop ধme. A few tricks when installing the doors is to use se a ratchet strap between the two front down poles of the roll bar, (thiss is fully explained in the instrucধons) to secure the roll bar cage, as you’lll need to remove the front bolts to install the door hinge. Second trick iss the door latch itself. The latch not only needs to be aligned front to backk and side to side, however is ধlted on the 3rd axis, so the alignment is crucial. What we did was leave all the mounধng bolts ¾ loose and then align the doors so they close and latch properly. Then with the door fully closed and latched, you ধghten all the adjustment bolts. Even with that trick under the belt, you will need to make slight adjustments ađer a few days out on the trails. Be paধent and take your ধme. Once they are aligned, they work great. C$569.00
DOOR STICKERS This accessory completely put the finishing touches on the build. At first the door decals had mixed reviews because we thought that the blacked out doors looked good the way they came, so why would you want to cover them up? But ađer we installed them and took a step back, we all agreed that it was the right choice. One trick we found was to remove several of the hex screws that are holding the door panel onto the doorframe. By doing this, you don’t need to be exact in the alignment of the pre-cut holes that go around the screw heads when trying to center the sধcker on the door. If you are out by a few eights of an inch, the screw heads will cover that up ađer you put them back on over the sধcker. C$219.00

atvworld FRONT BUMPER ER The Front Bumper added a certain in look to our CFMoto that you have to agree, is in the realm of badass. The bar is beefy and the install was just a few bolts. The overall shape of the bar lines up really nicely to the overall front lines ines of the 800EX frame, so all in all, for price and ease of install,l, this was a winner in our eyes.

ATV and Side X Side season is actually winding down here in Ontario and the upcoming snowmobiling season is star ng to gear up. It’s probably one of the few mes, over the course of a year, that a lot of us can actually get our calendars in line and get out for a large, end of season group ride. Seems if you try to put together a ride nowadays, all I hear is my wife, my kids, hockey, work, hun ng…… you get the idea. So, when an opportunity presents itself, I suppose you have to run the yellow light. The gang I described above would more accurately describe my usual sled gang. There are a few of us who do double duty and mul task in our motorsport hobbies, and we have definitely gravitated towards the side by side genre. Some of the lads heard us talking about se ng up this last ride of the year, and how we wanted to tackle our favorite trail. I have come to calling it the Ontaricon Trail. Kinda like Ontario’s Rubicon trail. Now I’ve never been on the Rubicon trail, (a en on Editor Kehoe) so no disrespect intended, this could really be a wannabe trail in comparison. But with local jeep clubs calling it the

Hell Trail, and off road board sites talking about people spending unexpected nights in there, it is in the same discussion I’m sure. Any route that has as many busted up trailers, parts, and even a brake caliper in a tree deserves its name. The actual entry into the trail starts on the North East corner of Lingham Lake. Lingham is a large, uninhabited lake located east of Hwy 62 and north of the

Belleville/Madoc area. It has been accessed for years by a very rough 4x4 road from the south. Fishing is rumored to be very good in this lake and last season my son and I did an overnight RZR trip to the lake to check it out. While doing the research for that trip and how I would access it for that funcধon, I found some web pages that listed a trail that went down the east side of the lake. Most of the informaধon laid it out as very technical, and if the water was high, virtually unpassable. We have actually done it twice in the side x sides; once in mid high water and once at low water. There is actually a way around anything that poses an obstacle. It might not be a short route, but at least it’s a route. It is really hard to picture a full size jeep in there, but I’m sure it happens. It’s a ton of fun in a side x side and you can move at a decent clip, and not ruin anything with a liħle cauধon and thought. Perhaps it’s not so technical on a tradiধonal ATV, but sধll quite a challenge. This trial will serve as a fantasধc introducধon to the newbies of our group in the passenger seat of our rides.
There is a bit of road running to be done to access the trail. We started basically from Hwy 62 and West seħlement Rd., and ran up the Heritage trail unধl we got to the snowmobile trail #961 east. That took us up to Wadsworth lake, and where we would begin to go south on Skootamata Lake Rd. It’s really the only road south of Wadsworth Lake. Follow that county road south unধl the Hydro corridor, and then you need to take the next right turn (east). Follow this rough road unধl its end, and there is access to the trail head on the right side. I believe the leđ fork goes to a private hunধng camp. What will you see on this trail? Well it starts with some good forest roads, but as the road gets longer, the road gets thinner and very ধght; technical; rocky; hilly; wet and lumpy, and all the while it is beauধful and amazing. There are no houses, driveways, hydro lines or cell service in there, it’s preħy much Nowhere, East Central Ontario. There are a couple of really nice rock crawls and descents, rough forest roads, swamp avoidance maneuvers, and not a lot of evidence of

vehicles using this route too much un l further south. A GPS unit is a very handy unit to have for this trip as it will keep you going the right way, using the lake as your guide, especially if you reach a high water roadblock and have to go out of your way to get around. Once down the length of the lake, pretty much any trail to the right (west) will take you to the Lingham Lake access road. If it turns out you miss them, and I have before, you will dump out on a rough gravel Hydro road. A quick right turn (west) and 5 minutes down that road will get you to the head of the Lingham Road. A run up this road is highly recommended. There’s lots of water on this road, some deep, some not so deep, but all holes will make you stop and look. Most are passable for ATVs, although you might get a wet bum in the side x side if the water is high. You will experience a river crossing, located with a chicken bridge half way up. If you do go thru the river, there is a large rock in the direct, straight line route between the two landings. Veer to the le , down-

stream, and then turn right to cross safely. A er that you will experience something every off road enthusiast should mark off the list - Johnson’s Hole. Rumor has it that it’s named a er some poor soul that didn’t make it out of that hole, but I can’t confirm that. There’s usually a local group splashing around in there and chicken routes are evident on the east side. Rule of thumb here is that anything to the west of the thru path is trouble and anything to the east is passible. The main straight thru road might look out of the ques on, but it might be the be er route. Just stay to the right, the le side is deep. Tread lightly on
the paths to the east or west side, they all look the same, but some you will have fun in, and some you will disappear in. Don’t charge in any of them quickly, some end in ver cal escape walls. If you get out of Johnson’s Hole, the road up to the lake tames down a bit. Sure it’s rocky and rough, but easily passible thru some really nice forest, and then it dumps out at the south end of the lake on a sand beach and river dam. Although the lake is extremely beau ful, the area around here has been accessed and abused for many years, and it really shows. Please, don’t leave anything there

that shouldn’t be. I suppose the drawback of going up the road is that you have to go down it to get out, but there is usually another entertaining group at Johnson’s Hole by then to check out. Ađer exiধng the trail, you’ll want to travel west, and this will lead you out of the Hydro corridor and towards Hwy 62. You will pass a Buddhist Temple on the way……Yup, you read that right, it’s a Buddhist Temple out there! Lingham Lake Road will bring you back to the Heritage trail, North or South to get you back to your starধng spot. There is a few decent parking spots in the Town of Gilmour and at a Gas Staধon called Trudy’s on Hwy 62 that can be used for day trips. All in all, the loop is around
110 to 130 kms long, and will take you most of a day to do, depending on how much water you experience and how fast you move. If you’re looking for accommodaধons in the area, our friends at Limerick Lake Lodge are just about 10 kms from the North east trail head, and you could access the Heritage trail not far from their resort. Maps of this area are hard to find, and we used Google maps for most of our informaধon. I would suggest at least checking out the maps there to be safe, and take that GPS to keep you on track. And if anyone aħempts this route, please contact us and let us know what you thought of it or if your GPS mapped it. We would love to hear from you.

THE DECISION WAS MADE TO ATTACK THE GNCC IN FULL FORCE. hile these two have probably seen more publicity and “Royal es” than any other current ATV racers, they were both completely green to GNCC racing before this year. They both had proven themselves at a Na onal Level in ATV Motocross, but the XC in the woods is a completely different animal. The brothers have a close rela onship with Can Am, and a decision was made to a ack the GNCC Series in full force. Cody would race the premier XC1 UTV class and the 4X4 Pro ATV, while Hunter would race XC2 stock based Pro UTV class. Cody took his first GNCC Season like he’d been doing it his en re life. They put in the behind the scenes work testing, tuning and developing their race cars with a few key sponsors, and were more than ready for that first round. Houser Racing and S3 Powersports beefed up the cars to the point of bulletproof, and their partnership with ELKA Suspension brought them Stage 5 shocks that would keep the

car flat, and handling like they were on rails in the turns, yet soak up the biggest g-outs you could throw their way. DWT supplied them with nearly indestruc ble, Zero offset Sector Billet Beadlock wheels, and Maxxis kept them in constant trac on for the en re season as well. They worked with Tireballs to ensure they could finish every race, and Casey Greek helped them with finding that op mum set up. Most of the Pro XC1 UTV class racers run completely built motors, but Cody opted for a more reliable stock engine. In fact, they
never even pulled their motors all year, they chose to run HMF dual exhaust with the Evolu on Programmer. They both claim that while it wasn’t quite the fastest car on the star ng line, it was pre y dang impressive, and they were never passed down the straightaways like you would expect. This really says a lot for the HMF/ Evolu on combo, as a lot of money is being spent looking for HP in building those other race motors. Cody’s first season was one for the record books. He jumped headfirst into the premier XC1 Pro UTV Class and found himself on the podium at all six UTV races. In fact, he managed to win three of them, as well as winning four of the ATV 4x4 Pro Class races. Cody entered the final round at the Ironman, only needing a top 15 finish to wrap up the Championship. As the recent results proved, Cody doesn’t have the heart to sit back and play it smart for a Championship, he goes to the track to win, and that’s just what he did. The 2016 Ironman GNCC proved to be an extra special round, as Cody would end up sharing the Pro Podium with his brother

looking forward to not star ng in the 10th row. In all honesty, he claims he was hoping for a top 5, but it went much be er than that. A er working towards the front, Hunter se led into an epic, hour-long ba le with David Plavi. They traded places back and forth for the en re race, without even realizing that they were ba ling for second and third overall. They both claimed they knew they were going pre y good, but had no idea it was for the podium. Hunter Miller ended up pulling off second place overall, landing him right next to his brother on the Pro Overall podium. This is an incredible, and probably unheard of feat for anyone bumping up from a lower class. The fact that they are brothers and GNCC rookies, just adds to the storybook finish. Another really cool feature of this perfect weekend was that their extremely proud mother was able to make the trip from Texas, and witness both her sons at the absolute top of their game. The Ironman Pro ATV 4x4 was a similar story for Cody when he pulled about a
fi h place start, and charged to the front of the pack by end of first lap. Cody then ba led back and forth with Brian Buchannon and Kevin Cunningham for the rest of the race. On the last lap, he was finally able to pull away for a decent lead. Winning the Ironman 4x4 Pro made it four wins for the season, and also marked the second round in which he would win both the ATV and the UTV race in the same weekend. If that’s not dominance, we don’t know what is! This feat was a GNCC record, and it se led him into a third place points finish for the year; a UTV XC1 Pro Championship with six UTV podiums, three of them wins, and four ATV Pro Wins, for a solid third place in the points Championship. That is one hell of a season for anyone, and almost unbelievable for a Rookie. Plans are s ll up in the air for the Millers for 2017, as they haven’t signed with any major sponsors yet. Their inten ons are to run the GNCC regardless, and we’re sure that they will get the help they need, and we’ll see them both winning some more races in 2017.

Winter riding will eventually put you into a situation where you are crossing frozen water. The Zoan Smart Suit is designed to be worn as an under-layer and utilizes the innovative SmartFoam® Technology to optimize comfort while providing floatation protection while on the frozen water. The suit also keeps you warm when you are not exerting energy, however once you start to sweat the SmartFoam® is designed to be breathable and actually increases the rate of evaporation. The Smart Suit is not a PFD, however we think that anything that helps you float better is always a good thing in the winter. DETONATION
Season Bumping This green ATC 90 has seen better days, but it somehow found its way into my shop, hoping I’d take it under my wing for winter restoration.
The past few seasons have been different to say the least. Fall has hung on well into what should be the winter season, and depending upon where you live in North America, summers have been hot, wet, or both. Now I’m not about to jump on the Global Change bandwagon, at least not yet. The data that the so-called experts have compiled simply does not span enough time in the big picture to be deemed gospel. But that’s another story for another time. No matter what is causing these fluctuations, the change has stretched our normal off-road riding season by nearly a month on both sides of winter. I still haven’t installed the plow mount plate to my loaner General so I can clear my driveway this winter, and my last trip to northern Minnesota in early November included a trail ride that was dusty and surprisingly warm.
But temperature swings and seasons aside, one of the biggest benefits of being an avid off-road enthusiast is that the season never has to end. In some parts of the country like Quebec for example, the local off-road community has developed a trail network for ATVs and side-by-sides that remains open and maintained year-round. Despite being a province known for its incredible snowmobile trails, the provincial associations and local clubs for both off-road vehicles and snowmobiles have learned to live in harmony, sharing certain sections of their trail system, and developing others which run parallel with each another. Of course, not everyone is ready or wanting to ride during the dead of winter, but with a well-equipped vehicle, you can dramatically extend your riding season right up until the first flakes of snow start to
Quebec’s Chaudière Appalaches is a popular ATV riding destination, and they cater to winter riding activities with complete ATV packages.

fall. Accessories such as windshields, cab enclosures, and heated accessories such as grips and seats, as well as modern, hightech cold-weather riding gear help to keep you warm and comfortable, even when the temperatures dip below the freezing point. Even if riding in the late shoulder seasons is not your thing, the off-road passion doesn’t have to stop. If you’re like me, the list of aftermarket goods on the wish list is too tempting to ignore, and undoubtedly there are a few upgrades you’ve had your eye on. The “off-season” is the perfect time to get those done, and have your buggy ready to roll when the first signs of spring emerge on the other side. Check out this issue’s buyer’s guide, where we’ve highlighted some new products that would make a perfect shop project this winter. As this sport starts to mature, the collectible fold of early three and fourwheelers is also starting to develop and will undoubtedly only grow with time. I’ve already got the ball rolling with an early Honda ATC 90 that was dropped at my shop by a local farmer. Knowing I’m already a vintage snowmobile collector, he figured the tree line behind the shop was as good a future home as any for the well-used green machine. Restoring an older machine is a great way to connect with other enthusiasts who not only enjoy riding today’s machines, but like to give a nod to the past as well. It’s also a great way to get your kids involved and teach them the value of a good box of tools. As a mutual collector friend of mine likes to say, “Get them off the X-box and into the toolbox.” Finally, we can’t forget the organized aspects of the sport. Over the past 10-years, the infrastructure of the off-road community has expanded and matured tremendously. New clubs are forming daily and existing ones are growing, and with that comes new trails, new ride parks and new events. Despite this growth, clubs and associations are always in need of new members and volunteers. Whether you’re interested in developing new trails, want to help maintain existing ones, or simply want to meet others who share your off-road passion, joining a local off-road club is both rewarding and a lot of fun. No matter your off-road calling, from hunting or ice fishing, trail riding or dune busting, or plowing your driveway and doing tasks around the farm, make this the year you “bump” the season into a year-round passion.

Ask any off-road enthusiast if they’re familiar with KFI and a large majority will simply nod, smile, and then spin you tale about how the recognized industry leader for mounts, winches, plows, and other associated ATV and side-by-side accessories, saved their bacon in a backwoods swamp or ride park mud pit. What started out as a late night, personal side-project for then engineer Corey Boelman, along with help from his brother-in-law’s family owned and operated Kappers Fabricating Inc. in Spring Valley, Minnesota, has since blossomed into one of the largest ATV and side-by-side accessory manufactures in the industry. Now as General Manager of KFI Products, Corey along with owners Larry Kappers and his two sons Jeff and Dan, continue to develop, engineer, and expand their product offerings. We caught up with Corey at KFI headquarters this past fall to get his last word take for this issue’s Last Turn Last ATV/UTV ride you took? It was in my Pioneer 1000 at the Quadna Mud Nationals. I had a couple of guys in the back seats who had never ridden in a UTV before, and to be honest, I was trying to scare them a little…I think I succeeded ha ha! Last thing you questioned putting in your mouth? I’m usually not much for hot foods, but on my way to the Novi Snow Show we had to stop off for something to eat at an Arby’s and decided to try one of those Jalapeno Bites with Bronco Berry Sauce. I must say, they’re very good, but I did pay for it later. Last band you listened to on your iPod or Radio? It was on Spotify and it was Def Leppard…I was preparing myself for their concert I was going to later in the week. Last thing you raced? KFI had our annual Indoor Industry Go-Cart Racing event while in Novi Michigan for the Snow Show. Nothing like getting a lot of super competitive Powersport guys and gals behind the wheels of a go-cart and racing for pride. There was plenty of bruising left after that night, both physical and egos LOL. Last time you pulled an “all-nighter”? I decided to try the infield camping experience this year at the Chicagoland NASCAR race, and found out no one sleeps all that much with that crowd. Last time you drove over 100mph? I finally got to get up to our family cabin in Ely, Minnesota for a 450 mile plus snowmobile trip this past year, and headed out on the lake to the trail head. Nothing like a cold crisp morning at over 100mph. Last person you met who truly inspired you? Being a former member of the military, I’m always truly inspired by those currently serving our country, or have in the past.

Last near death experience? Luckily I have never had any of these. Last thing your mother always told you to do? Always tell the truth.
but I read through the instructions for putting together my new, two-person dear stand for taking my youngest son Zach out hunting this year for his first time. Not sure who is more excited.
Last beer you drank? I’m not much of a beer drinker, but bring on the Captain.
Last person you hugged? I just gave my wife Kerri a hug goodnight, as I stay up to finish this questionnaire.
Last time you crashed? I was riding snowmobile up in Ely, Minnesota on my Pro-X 600, and a tree jumped out in from of me and totaled my sled. Not sure why that tree decided to do that, but luckily a little duct tape and stick splints got me back home.
Last time you threw up? Read my reply about my all-nighter…lol
Last time you were embarrassed? Frankly I’m embarrassed to even talk about it, but I was at work a few weeks back and something fell on the floor in the office. I was wearing my favorite jeans and the material had become very thin. When I bent over, the entire pocket ripped out. I asked if anyone had any duct tape as I was too busy to go home to change. My Administrative Assistant handed me some hot pink Duct tape with a smile. Being the engineer that I am, I taped up that rip so good, you couldn’t even tell! Lasting off-road memory? We were at Quadna Mud Nationals in Minnesota, and I was driving the KFI Pro Mule FXT, (a.k.a. “The Donkey”) fully loaded with six guys. We were heading up this super steep hill, with loose rocks flying, tunes blaring, and wheels spinning. We weren’t sure if we were going to make it with that much weight on such a steep incline. Luckily, we did. Last Idea/concept/or new KFI Products that you or KFI had that made you say…. Hell Yah? No secrets revealed here…you’ll just have to wait and see. It will be out shortly! Last thing you read? It was more picture viewing than actual reading,
Last New Year’s resolution you didn’t keep? I vowed I would do a lot more snowmobiling and ATV/UTV riding. It’s tough when your job is in the same industry as your riding passion. Last time you were lost? Pretty much any time I don’t have my phone… lol. Seriously, who gets lost when you have Google Maps at your fingertips? Last KFI project you worked on that you were truly excited about? We have a lot of new projects in the works that have been very exciting to work on and see develop. I’d say the new Team Tech KFI TigerTail Tow System has been an exciting new concept product. You can check it out on our website at kfiproducts.com. Last ATV or Side-by-Side you drove that blew your mind? For an ATV, it was definitely one that our engineer friend had, a Can-Am Renegade 1000 XMR that I took for a spin at Mud Nationals. When I left it was clean, but when it came back, it was packed full of mud. For a side-byside, I’m very impressed by my Honda Pioneer 1000, for it being a great all-around Sport/ Utility machine. Last words of advice? Work hard; think it through; say it how it is; keep the passion; and put your name on it.
