SPRING HAS SPRUNG
pring is here and after six months of riding in the cold, the warmer weather is more then welcomed. But with the amount of excess water and mud we’ve already experienced this spring, it has limited our riding. In many areas the extra water and mud have made some of our planned rides more challenging and some riding events have even had to be rescheduled. I’m usually the first to complain about too much dust, but I never thought I would say that there is too much mud and water! Recently my co-pilot and I were out enjoying a Sunday afternoon dodging water and mud holes and doing our best to stay dry making our ride overly slow. My son Eric pointed out that an Argo would have been perfect. For years I’d take him out in an Argo and we would dare to go through everything and anything on our path, and we would laugh and help winch or pull out others when they’d get stuck. Argos are not known for their speed, but in this type of terrain it really would have been faster for us. That day we both ended up with two soakers and we arrived home looking as dirty and wet almost as if we had rolled in a pond and then in mud. An Argo definitely would have kept us dry, kept most of the mud off and most importantly kept the wrath of Mom
away. We not only washed the General in the yard with the hose but had to rinse off ourselves as well before even thinking of going inside. We have featured a few informative reviews in this issue on a couple of great units like the Honda Talon 1000 X and the Maverick Sport X RC . A lot of time has been spent on these buggies. We had a tough time prying Nick’s hands of the steering wheels. Our Scene It focuses on the San Felipe 250 and the MINT 400, How-To is a great door install on a Maverick and we also checked in on Beau Biron’s Polaris RS1, plus much more. I hope you enjoy this issue and if you have a cool picture of an ATV or Side-by-Side, send it in to us info@atvworldmagazine. com. You never know, it could end up in the magazine… and if it does you’ll find yourself a nice new t-shirt for your efforts. Over the next few months as we log on the miles across North America, we will be at many manufacturer new model releases and on the tracks and the trails. It’s important that we all support our sport, and we hope to see you at one of the upcoming spring events! In the meantime sit back relax and enjoy the issue.

SIDE-BY-SIDES CAN PLAY NOW With the growing popularity of side-by-side off-road vehicles over the years, it’s confusing that some off-road communities continue to “outlaw” them on trails. As always- the Kawartha ATV Association is on the fuel and managed to negotiate and get the approval use of side-byside vehicles for a one-year trial period on some of their trials within the City of Kawartha Lakes. Businesses must be standing up and applauding to have to opportunity to now tap into the sideby-side market. Seeing the economic benefit the City of Kawartha Lakes voted unanimously in favor to allow this trial period.

Jamie Kirkpatrick and his brand new RZR build was the second UTV to pop out of the infamous Matomi Wash. They even managed to get out front for a short time, but ended up settling for a hard earned and very respectable 2nd.
This guy was on fire from the very beginning, opting for a rear start, Wayne Matlock was the first UTV to make it out of Matomi Wash, and he spent the better part of the race up front and pulling away from the pack.

As with all Provincial governments, let alone when a new party is elected, some, if not many campaign topics and promises are brought forward and implemented soon after the election. This past election being no different, one of these campaign topics had to do with public education in regards to not only how Health and Physical Education will be taught in the classroom, but the specific curriculum surrounding it. This is definitely a strongly contested subject matter. Although I think the previously mentioned topic or subject is very important, another area that I feel needs to be revisited are the High School technical shop programs that we had years ago. Academic programs are important,
but not everyone is going to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, administrator, manager, and the list could go on. The Federal and Provincial governments have identified that there is a dire need for qualified trades’ professionals required in our work force. Apprenticeship and the Ontario College of Trades was even one of those important campaign topics that people voted on. It is important to note that the Ontario College of Trades is a governing authority, and not an actual college. In my opinion, (based on my high school years) the best place to start a student on the path of a professional trades person is in high school. Although I may be a wee bit biased, teaching in the trades at Canadore College, I truly feel that each and every high school (instead of only a few) needs to offer some type of straightforward, specific technical training programs with easy daily access, in order to spark curiosity and ignite the excitement of the chosen career path. Currently, to compensate for the lack of “shop classes” being offered by different school boards, there are different programs which have proven to be great alternatives, and available to high school students that can provide not only training, but pathways to different career choices. I am very fortunate to work with a great group of people from the surrounding district school boards that not only do a great job for the students in their respective districts, but are able to think outside the box to put these programs together, in order to capture the many different interests of their students. A great example would be a project I submitted a couple of years ago, and had the opportunity to deliver this past fall. I had submitted a proposal that was related to the automotive industry, with that element of fun added to it. What the project was to include were examples in horsepower calculations, developing the skills required to use a Vernier Caliper precision measuring device, engine

displacement calculations and the various components of an automobile. The fun aspect came from the latter part of the project of identifying vehicle components while building an automobile model. The school I worked with was F.J. McElligott in Mattawa, 60 kms east of North Bay. Over a period of 8 weeks, 3hrs/wk, students built plastic model car and truck kits. Besides building the models, each student not only decided the colour of their vehicle body, but actually painted their model and while identifying them, many of the vehicle components like the engine; transmission; suspension; steering; axles; wheels and interior parts. The students also enjoyed calculating their own personal horsepower with the following formula. One of the young ladies ended up having the most horsepower during this exercise. Calculating Personal Horsepower • Power is the rate at which work is done. • It is expressed in foot-pounds/second. • One horsepower is 550 foot-pounds/second. • This is how to calculate your own horsepower. • Mark out 100 feet. You will time yourself running this distance carrying a weight. • As an example use a 20 pound weight. • You time (example) to carry 20 pounds 100 feet is 5 seconds. • Calculate work done. Work = Feet X Pounds therefore 100 X 20 = 2000 foot pounds. • Calculate power. Power = Work / Time therefore 2000 / 5 = 400 foot pounds / second • To translate your power to H.P. divide your answer by 550. (550 ft.lbs/sec = 1 HP) • Therefore 400/550 = .7272 HP Try doubling both the distance and the weight for more fun.
Here you can see F.J. McElligott students hard at work, identifying the different components as they assemble their vehicles.

The Day Is Finally Here After what seemed like forever, our phone finally rang with an official invite to the first full-on Honda Sport model UTV. The intro was to consist of two separate days of riding, and an in-depth technical presentation. The presentation was to be followed by a Q&A session with the key engineers and product development team that has made Talon a reality. The riding was separated into two days with different locations, to showcase both the Talon 1000X and the 1000R. 48
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 1
The 1000X ride day was to take place on Southern Utah’s Barracks Trail System, and we would ride the slightly wider and longer Talon 1000R in the dunes and rocks of Sand Hollow State Park. While we rode and will review both, as of press time, the Canadian market will only be getting the more geographically suited 1000X model. Only time will tell with future models, but the Honda staff assured us that there’s definitely more to come.
AS AN EXAMPLE, THE TALON’S DESIGN AND BODY-STYLE ARE DEVELOPED ENTIRELY IN HONDA’S R&D OFFICE IN TORRANCE, CA.
atvworld atvworldmag.com
THE TALON GETS ITS START WITH THE DESIGN IN CALIFORNIA, BUT THE EVER IMPORTANT CHASSIS IS DESIGNED, ENGINEERED AND DEVELOPED IN HONDA’S RAYMOND, OHIO CAMPUS.
Made In the USA Our first actual in-person viewing and the tech presentation, took place shortly after arriving at the Sand Hollow Resort outside St. George UT. One of the coolest parts of the Honda Talon’s technical presentation was getting the information from the individual minds that were responsible for bringing it to life. One very bold and appreciated statement was MADE IN THE USA. The Honda Talon is clearly and proudly a global effort, with the engine and DCT transmission coming from Japan, but the rest of the entire project takes place in the US. As an example, the Talon’s design and body-style are developed entirely in Honda’s R&D office in Torrance, CA. The Honda Talon’s mission statement “Everything’s Better Side X Side” means that
they needed to bring the previously unmatched experience of riding a motocross bike to both the driver as well as the passenger. Body lines started with the look, flow, and feel of their ever-popular CRF dirt bike lineup, but with function and capability at the forefront. Fenders look aggressive, yet are developed to provide un-beatable mud and water protection. The standard roof creates a functional spoiler, yet directs air properly when trailered in either direction at freeway speeds. The Talon gets its start with the design in California, but the ever important chassis is designed, engineered and developed in Honda’s Raymond, Ohio campus. Looking for a plush ride, maximum ground clearance and precise steering response? Honda engineers opted for a 44% front-end weight bias. They designed an all-new one-piece frame that is identical in both models, but the 1000X suspension and wheelbase are intended to emphasize maneuverability and precise handling, while the 1000R’s lean toward high-speed tracking and large bump absorption. Speaking to the challenges of this multi-location development and assembly process, the massive one-piece chassis that was developed in OH for rigidity and durability, required a complete redesign of the welding department in the South Carolina manufacturing plant. A new paint facility was also required to provide the desired frame paint quality and ensure that rust prevention needs were met. In-depth, real world testing is also a huge focal point with anything Honda brings to the table. The Talon was no exception to this and has endured years of durability and handling testing, research and development, before ever reaching the market. Honda used ex-Baja and MX racers as test drivers for the Talon, with extensive testing taking place in Ohio, Georgia, N.Carolina, S.Carolina, and California.

The Talon 1000X The 64 inch wide Honda Talon 1000X is designed to be both maneuverable and precise. It features 15.1 inches of rear travel and 14.6 up-front, controlled by 2.0 Fox Podium Quick Switch 3 shocks (QS3). A one piece frame design is said to provide unmatched rigidity and a confidence-inspiring ride, with consistent geometry under the harshest loads. The Talon’s performance-tuned 999cc power plant is a four-valve, Unicam, parallel-twin design that is rubber mounted into the one piece chassis, and mates well with Honda’s high-tech Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The DCT features two automatic modes, (Drive & Sport) and a manual mode with column-mounted paddle shifters like a high end sports car. High and low ranges are achieved with a sub-transmission that basically doubles the amount of available gear options.
The Talon’s drive system features Honda’s I-4WD, which is the Powersports industry’s first and only brake traction control system. I-4WD uses brakeforce distribution (BTCS) to manage the amount of wheel-slip between front wheels in 4WD, and strategically optimizes brake force with (EBD) Electronic Brakeforce Distribution to the most effective wheels during braking in two wheel drive. A hillstart assist system/button can temporarily hold the vehicle in place when stopped on an ascent, for those who prefer driving with one foot. On paper, the Talon 1000X is definitely looking to compete with the naturally aspirated RZR XP, Maverick X3, and Wildcat. This is the long rumored Honda sport UTV that we’ve all been waiting for, and we couldn’t wait to put it through its paces.

Life is Better -SxSAs we shuttled up into the mountains to a staging area for the Barracks Trail System, excitement was high, and everyone’s conversations were all directed at this latest machine. We were all on the same page, a select few had ridden in pre-production models a few months earlier, but everyone in the bus wanted their shot behind the wheel. Southern Utah’s Barracks trail system features miles upon miles of narrow, yet high-speed trails that zig-zag through pine trees and boulders. Quite possibly the perfect playground for a 64” sport UTV that prides itself in precision handling. What’s more, Mother Nature had blessed us with plenty of moisture, and even some snow patches to play in. Getting into the Talon for the first time, you will be impressed with the wide-opening, suicide doors, and how easy they make getting in and out of the vehicle. The low-cut step in entrance point, adjustable steering wheel, and well placed seats truly made this a mentionworthy trait for everyone in the group, ranging from probably 5’6” to 6’3”. Sitting
in the Talon, the ergonomics of seat to steering wheel, to foot-pedals feels well laid out. You sit higher in the car than an X3, probably closer to that of a RZR XP, but you’re buckling into what feels like a more substantial stock seat. At 6 foot nothing, I did find myself wanting the seat all the way back, but didn’t personally hear any of the taller drivers complaining. Adjusting the driver seat was seamless, and probably the best functioning seat slider system in a UTV to date. The Honda staff intentionally paired us up with another editor for our group ride. The overall passenger experience is as big a part of the Talon vehicle design as is driving it. The passenger gets a quick-adjust grab handle with a unique cam-lock system that secures it in any position. You will notice and appreciate that it’s very easy to operate, and doesn’t allow the handle to rattle, vibrate, or move around in any way. The passenger floorboard includes raised platforms for secure footing on both sides, and a recess in the center, should you feel like stretching your legs.
The next really cool thing the Honda staff did for the Talon launch was teaming up with the boys at Rugged Radio, and installing an intercom and radio in every one of the press units. Steve Bechard from Rugged, personally grabbed all of our helmets at the arrival dinner and spent the better part of his night installing about thirty speaker/mic kits into them. Rugged Radio had in fact just days before, developed and manufactured a trick new billet chin-bar clamping mount that really eases the mic boom part of the install, as well as making it easier to remove and switch the kit to another helmet. Having a quality intercom between driver and passenger is a luxury that every UTV enthusiast should experience, and having the car to car radio capability made for incredibly smooth functioning, guided rides with minimal time waiting for the group. Everyone was impressed with how convenient the comms were, and we can’t imagine other OEMs not using them for future press rides and introductions.

AS WE ALL KNOW, A LITTLE MOISTURE MAKES FOR GREAT TRAIL RIDING, BUT A LITTLE TOO MUCH CAN MAKE FOR A MUDDY MESS.
52
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 1
The Ride The Talon fires quickly to life with a turn of the key. It’s idle is smooth and the muffler keeps its exhaust tone to a minimum, with a hearty growl as you rev it up a little. The exhaust tip points directly to the ground to further reduce trail and in cab noise levels. It really does sound pretty good without being loud. The majority of users will really like the stock exhaust, while the more serious rock crawling enthusiast might prefer to direct the exhaust elsewhere to cut back on dust for their spotters. We opted for automatic sport mode as we took off out of camp, and accelerating down the trail feels almost seamless as the DCT transmission shifts quickly and smoothly through its gears. Acceleration feels so linear that you could be driving a CVT, but can audibly hear it shifting
through individual gears. In Sport mode the Talon comes off the bottom strong, and holds each gear that extra little bit for aggressive driving. Downshifting and engine braking is equally automated, with a smooth controlled feeling at all times. We were instantly impressed with the accuracy of the automatic transmission, but couldn’t help but want to play with the paddle shifters. We quickly found that manually dropping a gear or two allows you to lock up the rear wheels and slide into a turn. Driving like this is fun and makes you feel like you’re going faster, but it is honestly all but impossible to shift quicker or more accurately than the DCT does on its own. Throughout the day we found ourselves trying, yet always ended up back in auto-mode with the exception of grabbing that occasional downshift. As we all know, a little moisture makes for great trail riding, but a little too much can make for a muddy mess. Leaving the base camp, we were under shade from the tree canopy, and the ground was still a little frozen. Within a few miles, things were beginning to soften up quickly and getting a little soupy. The trail consisted of super fun, twisty trails with occasional braking bumps, a few scattered whoop sections, and multiple mud sections. As neither of us really enjoy being covered in mud, we opted to haul @$$ in the drier sections, and then creep through all the mud pits in an attempt to stay dry. The Talon comes stock with 1/2 doors, and the option to buy panel inserts to complete them, just like every other sport
atvworld atvworldmag.com
performance UTV on the market. The RZR, Maverick, Wildcat, and now the Talon all do this, and we’re not really sure what “customer type” would prefer this set up over completed doors, yet every manufacturer does it. With that said, we were so busy wishing we had full doors that we didn’t really notice how good the mud protection actually is. After the first few slow crawl mud crossings, we started being a little less cautious and letting the fenders do their job. Yes, we did get a little mud on our pant legs from the opening, but not nearly as bad as you would expect. Even in the extremely soupy sections, the front fender design knocks down the large majority of the mud and keeps the cabin pretty clean. In showroom stock form with the exception of the accessory 1/4 windshield they installed, the Honda Talon offers by far the best mud protection in its class. The Talon 1000X handled the higher speed, switchback trails at Barracks with precision and accuracy. While still incredibly comfortable at lower speeds, it has no problem being thrown into a rutted up berm, sliding corners, or pounding through the braking bumps. Under braking bumps or whoops, Honda’s (EBD) system keeps the rear end planted and in traction, for more control avoiding the tendency to hop out of its line, rut, or intended path. Getting hard on the brakes is followed in sync with accurate downshifting, and you are magically right back in the sweet-spot as you get back on the gas. The Talon doesn’t mind a slow cruz, but it sure seems to like being driven hard. Steering is light and almost effortless, yet still provides a connected feeling with the trail, and its EPS system all but eliminates any negative feedback to the steering wheel. The Barracks trail system included a few pretty gnarly descents and one pretty significant hill climb. The Talon’s smooth, yet direct engine braking breeds confidence, and
really takes any concern out of downhill maneuvering. Sandy, rutted hillclimbs really showcase the I-4WD system, as it searches and capitalizes on any available traction. I-4WD uses electronic control of individual brake calipers to manage wheel slip, and apply torque to the wheels with greater traction. On one particular hillclimb, we were all able to experience this advantage while scavenging through ruts, and trying to keep up the necessary momentum to conquer it. Two different editors didn’t make it on their first attempt, due to poor line choice and running out of ground clearance, but both were able to back out of their chosen line and restart using the “Hill Start Assist” system. While this move could clearly be done by driving two-footed, it was pretty cool to see how it simplifies the process of getting restarted on a pretty steep incline. This same hillclimb and a couple of the long descents were also a great showcase for the sub transmission. The group leaders were able to recommend selecting low range to the group via the Rugged Radio’s. On the Talon’s DCT, Low Range mode reduces the transmission’s
gear ratio, but still lets it shift through all six gears for maximum engine torque while climbing, and maximum engine braking while descending. The 64” wide Talon 1000X rear suspension uses a 3 link trailing arm set up, with significantly less wheel travel than the wider 1000R version, as well as the RZR XP, andCan-Am X3. This set-up is intended to provide quicker, more precise handling and precision steering. Driven in its element, such as the Barracks Trail system, the 1000X proved to be incredibly stable, precise, and you definitely don’t seem to miss the extra 2 inches of wheel travel. The Fox QS3 shocks do lack the ability to really fine tune compression and rebound, but the 3 predeveloped settings simply cover a pretty large range and worked well for everything we could throw at them. Riding the Barracks trail we found all the way soft to be comfortable for average cruising, and the mid-setting to be better for pushing it harder than average. The firm setting was stiffer than we really liked for this ride spot, but would probably work well with a heavier payload, or more wideopen desert terrain.

THE TALON IS OBVIOUSLY DIRECT COMPETITION TO THE NON-TURBO MACHINES WITH SIMILAR HP, BUT WHO’S TO SAY WHAT PERFORMANCE GAINS LIE WITHIN, AND IT MIGHT EVEN BE MORE COMPETITIVE THAN WE THINK WITH THE FLAGSHIP TURBOS
Overall First Impression We’ve all been waiting for this Honda Sport UTV for a very long time, and are extremely happy to see its eventual debut. If this were a race, the competition definitely beat them to the starting line and has already sold a lot of really cool machines. As much as we all wish Big Red would have jumped in head first and released this 3 or 4 years ago, history has proven that’s not the Honda way. They’ve always held their cards close, carefully studied the market, and tested/ developed to near perfection before coming to the table. Maybe the market has progressed a little farther, or maybe it hasn’t, but the product line will always be durable, reliable and provide a great ownership experience. The Talon is no exception to history; maybe the others have already made millions, but this machine is well thought out, has undoubtedly gone through more durability testing than any previous UTV,
and will put a longstanding smile on the face of anyone who buys one. Overall power and engine performance is on par with the other major brand, naturally aspirated UTVs. Overall build quality is through the roof; the rubber mounted engine makes an all-day drive way more comfortable, and you will never have to change a Talon Clutch Belt. We’re also pretty sure this machine will stand the test of time, like the many Honda products before it. The Talon is obviously direct competition to the non-turbo machines with similar HP, but who’s to say what performance gains lie within, and it might even be more competitive than we think with the Flagship Turbos. More food for thought; the engine is longitudinally placed in the chassis for increased drivetrain strength, but it also leaves plenty of room behind the passenger seat for a Turbo and Intercooler.
One Minor Concern The only downside we see to the DCT transmission might be in trying to run a much larger tire. With a CVT clutch, you can simply change clutch weights and springs to account for the taller gear ratio and increased rotating mass. The Honda comes stock with a slightly smaller than the competition 28” tire, the test engineers said they had no problem clearing and running 30’s, but anything larger than that is going to take a relatively in-depth internal gearing change, or a significant increase in HP. We can’t wait to get our test unit and look forward to playing with a 31 or 32 inch tire set-up. The Talon 1000X also looks to be the best contender we’ve seen to date for a full on, adventure machine build. 54

Our first introduction to this highperformance, adventure loving Sport Class ofCan-Am UTVs was just six months ago in beautiful British Columbia. These 60” wide machines were based on the current Maverick Trail chassis, but featured a wider stance and a larger cockpit. Available with and without DPS as a price point, and options for a 75 hp or 100 hp power plant.

he Maverick Sport was a perfect match for the mountainous trails, and fire roads we experienced in BC. The opportunity to test a Rock Crawling version of the machine was arranged for an equally fitting location. Lucerne Valley, home to the King of the Hammers off road race, is an absolute mecca for Rock Crawling. The location is on a massive lake bed that is surrounded by crazy looking rock outcroppings. The race leads drivers through high speed desert sections to connect together a handful of different, well known rock crawling obstacles. Over a hundred thousand enthusiasts and racers show up annually for the week-long event. If you haven’t seen it you’re missing out. The competitive rock crawling following is a whole culture 58

of people that you might not even realize existed. It’s hard to comprehend just how big and cool it is without experiencing it for yourself. BRP had the brand newCan-Am Maverick Sport X RC on display for the KOH event, and they were actually letting the public demo them in their element. We got the invite to link up with their marketing team for a little more in depth ride, and actually attempt to put the X RC through some of the race course obstacle sections. We had done Moab on UTVs, and even the Rubicon Trail on an ATV, but Lucerne is truly next level, and the opportunity to do it on a vehicle that was actually built for this was something you don’t turn down.
THE SPORT X RC GETS THE 100 HP ROTAX ENGINE OPTION THAT HAS BEEN OPTIMIZED FOR TRAIL AND DESERT SITUATIONS.
atvworld atvworldmag.com
WHAT IS THE MAVERICK SPORT X RC? The brand new Maverick Sport X RC is an all-around sport UTV that comes fully factory equipped for trails and rockcrawling. It gets increased stability from a wider 64” stance, more ground clearance and extra interior and exterior protection. The Sport X RC also gets Smart-Lok with Rock and Trail modes. The suspension is dampened by FOX QS3 shocks, keeping it very simple to always find that desired comfortable ride setting. The Sport X RC also gets 30” Maxxiss tires and Dynamic power steering. Niceties like premium half doors and a winch make this one of the most well equipped stock vehicles of its kind.
The Sport X RC gets the 100 hp Rotax engine option that has been optimized for trail and desert situations. It is literally butter smooth off the bottom, but packs plenty of power all the way through to the top. Intelligent throttle control (iTC) features sport with faster throttle response, and ECO mode for a smoother ride with filtered power delivery and better fuel economy. The throttle by wire system can literally smooth out your driving, even when your foot is bouncing on, or chopping the throttle in the rough terrain. It also offers Electronic Hill Descent Control for simple and controlled descent.
SMART-LOK TECHNOLOGY Above and beyond all the extra clearance, protection and other addons, the Sport X RC’s Rock and Trail specific Smart-Lok is what really allows the machine to own the extreme terrain. The front lockable diff. is electronically controlled with a technology that ensures maximum traction and slow speed maneuverability when in challenging terrain. The Smart-Lok system allows on-the-fly adjustment, and can lock or unlock the differential at any speed. No need to stop the vehicle, giving up any and all valuable forward momentum or drive.
The electronic system pulls from, and monitors six data inputs, and quickly engages an integrated actuator with the proper load. The driver has the option to select between four modes, 2x4, 4x4 fully locked, 4x4 ROCK, and 4X4 TRAIL settings, that are designed to enhance the overall experience with a customized feel that matches terrain, conditions, and demands. This system’s main focus is allowing the driver to focus on the trail, while always supplying the ideal traction.
THE MAVERICK SPORT X RC IS ALSO CLUTCHED TO ACCOMMODATE THE LARGER TIRES NEEDED FOR INCREASED GROUND CLEARANCE AND IMPROVED ROLL OUT AND RIDE.

CLUTCHING & COOLING Clutching is another area of concern with the slow crawling, and bigger tires found on a rock machine. BRP has addressed this by equipping the X RC with a Quick Response System (QRS) CVT, with electronic belt protection that notifies the driver when he should be in low range. This QRS provides smooth and precise power with predictable deceleration, while oversized air intakes keep operating temperatures to a minimum. A large radiator is utilized to keep engine temps under control as well.
The Maverick Sport X RC is also clutched to accommodate the larger tires needed for increased ground clearance and improved roll out and ride. The X RC comes stock with 30”, square profile Maxxis Liberty tires that combine with a max clearance suspension set-up, to provide an impressive 38 cm (15 inches) of ground clearance. This extra ground clearance is mandatory in the rocks, and appreciated in most any other desert terrain.
SUSPENSION For additional clearance, the Maverick Sport X RC gets an arched dual a-arm, front suspension set up that pulls an impressive 37.5 cm (14.75 in) of wheel travel. The rear gets the same travel numbers withCan-Am’s arched Torsional Trailing A-arm set-up and a sway bar. FOX 2.5 PODIUM Piggyback shocks take care of the damping and final ride quality with FOX’s QS3 compression adjustment to simplify on trail adjustment.

PROTECTION The Maverick Sport chassis is both lightweight and efficient, the X RC model gets complimented with increased protection for both the passengers and the chassis itself, for long standing durability. The Sport X RC gets the same unique cage design, premium half doors, an integrated front bumper, a tow hook and incredible HMW full skid plate as other Maverick Sports. Where it really differentiates itself is with HMW protection and sliders for all the suspension components and the front differential. HMW (High Molecular Weight) is an incredibly dense and strong plastic type material that not only absorbs shock and protects, but will also slide easily across rocks and other obstacles. The Sport X RC also addresses protection against being stuck or stranded with a pre-installed, incredibly high quality 4500 lb. winch. The Maverick Sport X RC’s winch comes with synthetic rope and a rock guard sleeve. The durable self-retrieval system is mounted low and out of the way, but offers plenty of pulling power to remove you from just about any undesirable situations. 62

DRIVE TIME As mentioned earlier, we got to test the Maverick Sport X RC in one of the best rock crawling locations around. It was a cool opportunity as it’s far from the everyday driving situation one usually finds themselves in. As well, we were driving machines that were obviously well equipped for it, right from the factory. To make the best use of time, we opted to start with a high speed desert section that leads to some mild rocky hills, and then right into taking on what’s known as “Turkey Claw”. Turkey Claw is a bolder ravine hill climb that is pretty much comprised of solid boulders, with very little actual dirt in between. First getting into the X RC, you will remember how good the Maverick Sport doors are. They operate smoothly and slam shut with authority, unlike some of the competition, that can’t seem to figure out a latch system that won’t open on the trail at some point. The seats are comfortable and provide just enough bolstering, without hampering your ability to get in and out while scouting lines. The doors also offer multiple options for arm placement/resting, while driving less aggressive terrain. Settles are standard 3 point, but comfortable, and BRP has even included tabs for simple 4-5 point harness installation, versus having to weld and repaint. The transmission engages into high or low range smoothly with the shifter, and initial acceleration is also smooth and controlled. Engine noise, exhaust and

vibration is closer to an automobile than an off-road toy, and will surely be appreciated after a long day on the trail. High range in the transmission is plenty fast for aggressive driving, as it’s more than comfortable with a 90-100 kms (60mph) range. Handling and comfort in the rough at WFO throttle is reasonably good; it’s not an X3, but that’s not its intention or target market. We pulled up to the first rocky climb with confidence, dropped it in low, and flipped the switch for Rock mode on the diff. The X RC handled the medium sized rocky climb with ease, and clearly could have done it without the low or the diff lock, but it definitely creates a smoother, well controlled situation. Dropping down the backside of the first mountain was an instant reminder of the Electronic Hill Descent. It is incredibly effective, controlled, and almost idiot-proof. Let off the gas and the Maverick slows to a calm crawl, virtually on its own. If you’re not used to this, it does takes some getting used to, but overall it’s definitely a big advantage when driving in these situations. Next up was Turkey Claw, pulling up to the mouth of the trail it was clear that we would be getting an instant “real deal” test very shortly. The base of the trail looks like a river canyon that threw up
an endless supply of knee to waist high boulders. Slapping it in low again, it was time to start picking lines and seeing what these KOH racers really go though. On a UTV, or probably any other 4x4 vehicle out there, Turkey Claw will have you in and out of the vehicle looking at lines and wondering if your gonna make it without major damage. Once again, we found the ease of the 3 point belt to be really nice, as well as the process of getting in and out of the cab to be really convenient. It also really helps to have a spotter, to properly line up your tires and maybe boost your confidence at times. If all else fails, you will have a witness to that line that didn’t work out. We managed to pick our way up Turkey Claw without any damage or incidents. There were however, a few pucker moments where you had to back up and reassess the situation, or pick another line. Traction is amazing in the Rock mode, and it has more ground clearance than you realize, until you go crawling over waist tall boulders. The way down is an eye opener as well, you don’t ever really go fast enough to use the hill descent, but you will find yourself second guessing some transitions that the X RC turns out to be completely fine with.
FINAL THOUGHTS The Maverick Sport X RC performs like a true, rock crawling specific machine in its element, yet it’s really pretty good everywhere else in between. It’s also impressive that for a complete animal on the trail, it still has a full size bed for packing away the goods, and real deal towing capacity, should you want to pack in a mini tent trailer, or even work chores during the week. This is a great all around machine, it’s right at home in the desert, and it very well equipped for the adventure types. It’s going to do very well and should appeal to a lot of people. The worry free, durable and reliable nature of this platform will impress the masses. What’s more, its first scheduled maintenance is a year out, and it has up to three years of available warranty. 64

The recently released Polaris RS1 seemed a little bit like the Black Sheep in the industry. It’s not really an ATV, as you sit in it not on it; it’s not a side by side, as there’s no room for a passenger. It must be a UTV, but it doesn’t have an actual bed. What it is in fact, is the most agile RZR ever, with a center-cockpit design for ATV/Motorcycle like site-line visibility, and a one on one connection between driver and vehicle. What it is, is a whole lot of fun for one person, and a naturally aspirated, 110 HP ProStar H.O. engine in a lighter and optimally balanced RZR.

So
just where does this $18,000, single person UTV fit into this current market? This was the question, and the immediate answer appears to be on the race track. Just as expected, the first place the RS1 started showing up, and making a name for itself is in closed course competition. One particular racing venue where the RS1 is quickly proving itself is the WORCS Series. WORCS races are typically run without a passenger anyways, and the RS1 brings both a weight and agility advantage. Coinciding with the RS1’s release in 2018, Ronnie Anderson pulled off a win in both WORCS UTV Pro Classes at the opener - talk about coming out swinging! In the competition’s defense, this was the super tight, almost arena-cross-like round

that takes place in a Las Vegas Casino. Nevertheless, many racers took note, and the SXS Pro Stock class saw a huge influx of RS1s throughout the season. In 2019, the single seat RS1 appears to be the favorite choice amongst top drivers in the SXS Pro Stock Class. The SXS Pro Stock class consists of naturally aspirated cars with no internal engine mods. Racers can only add exhaust, clutching, and EFI mapping to improve the way it runs. These are the same rules the two seat machines must abide by, but the RS1 is lighter, better balanced, and more agile. With its considerably shorter wheelbase, the RS1 will run circles around a standard UTV in a tight course, but on the same note, can also be a little bit squirrelly and harder to control in the whoops and higher speed sections.

The WORCS
RS1 Build
Ronnie Anderson, Matt Hancock, and Beau Baron went 1, 2, and 3 in their RS1 race cars at the WORCS opener in Primm, NV. In a class that was previously only contested by two seat Side by Sides, they didn’t even let a single one on the box with them. This was a huge statement towards domination for the RS1, and now with five rounds behind us, they’re still dominating. A few conventional Side by Sides have found their way in the mix, but there are 4-5 guys on RS1s proving they can hit the podium, or even win at any time. It’s pretty wild to see this new machine pretty much dominating this class,

but it’s even crazier that they are all pretty much running the same, exact set-up. Known for his race developed RZR suspension and chassis components, Mark Holz of Holz Racing Products has pretty much built each one of these guys the same car. Beau Baron, Ronnie Anderson, Matt Hancock, Corbin Leaverton, and Cody Bradbury are all winning races in HOLZ Racing built RS1s and it’s pretty safe to say he’s got them figured out.

Beau Baron and Matt Hancock both opt to run ELKA’s new 3.0” Stage 5 Shocks. Beau and Matt are both longtime Elka Suspension guys, and have been working with Roll Design’s Doug Roll to perfect valving, overall performance and handling. The 3.0” platform is the latest evolution of the Stage 5 that was necessary to extract every last bit of performance, cooling, and adjustability on these bigger, longer travel machines like the RS1, RZR XP, andCan-Am X3. They feature massive 66mm aluminum bodies with Elka’s proven High-Flow technology, with dual-speed compression and rebound adjust-ability. They also feature dual-rate springs with threaded/adjustable crossover rings and 22mm induction-hardened steel shafts. Ronnie Anderson, Bradbury, and Leaverton all choose to run Walker Evans Velocity Series shocks. While the RS1 does come equipped with pretty nice Walker Evans Needle shocks, the Velocity Series feature 2.5” bodies, 7/8” shafts, and an 70

The HRP Suspension components are made from tig-welded, 4130 chromoly for substantial weight savings and incredible durability. The HRP RS1 still retains the same 64” track width and stock shock lengths, but the front A-arms add two inches to the overall wheelbase to improve handling. This kit includes everything you need for safety, handling, and durability. For the SxS Pro Stock class, all that’s left for the individual racer to choose is wheels; tires; shocks; exhaust; fuel mapping and clutching.

Beau and Matt also turn to the same man when it comes to making their ATVs and Side by Sides run to their fullest potential. Tuner/builder Curtis Sparks is that guy, and he’s been making four-stroke engines rip since the Honda ATC 90 days. The Pro Stock class doesn’t allow you to open or modify the engine in any way, but you can modify exhaust, fuel program-

Beau Baron is a CST Tire Racer and Test rider for motorcycles, ATVs and Side by Sides. He chooses to run the CST Dingo for hard-pack terrain and the CST Stag for muddy, sandy, or loamy conditions. His tire size changes between 28”, 29”, and 30”, depending on track conditions, but they are always mounted on 14x7 DWT Rock & Lock wheels. The Rock & Lock wheels are spun aluminum construction versus cast, this means they will bend versus breaking under extreme impact. This option is key for Beau as he runs the Tire Block run flat system, which
won’t allow him to get a flat, even with an extremely bent wheel. Matt Hancock runs lightweight Maxxis Bighorn 2.0’s on 14x7 Method bead-lock wheels. He also runs the Tire Block run flat system, eliminating any chance of a flat induced DNF, or even pitstop. Bradbury and Leaverton run KMC bead-locks and GBC Kanati tires with Tire Blocks keeping them round and rolling. Ronnie Anderson is the only one of these guys not running a run-flat system, yet his BFG tires and Walker Evans bead-locks seem to be proving pretty bulletproof.

Drive
Train
The RS1 features drive train items borrowed from the higher powered XP Turbo S, which should in theory, hold up tremendously with a 110 HP, lighter car. The front diff is way bigger/better than what’s found on the other naturally aspirated RZRs, and so are the drive shafts and CV axles. Beau and Ronnie seem to be having pretty good luck with the stock Polaris CV axles, while Matt, Corbin, and Cody are all running ultratough 300M RCV Pro Series II Axles.
Going
All In
Ronnie Anderson managed to win both the Pro Stock and SXS Pro in the RS1 in Vegas last year, but it’s definitely a little down on power for most tracks in the SXS Pro (Turbo) class. Beau Baron decided to take it one step further for 2019, committing to the RS1 for the entire series in SXS Pro. Claiming to prefer the RS1 on many of the tracks, he turned to Curtis at Sparks Racing to build a full-on, no holds barred race motor to compete with the Turbos.
The engine is pretty much an N/A RZR, so Sparks was more than familiar with what it takes to extract tons of power from it. Starting at the core, they built a high performance crank with custom rods, and topped that with high compression Sparks Racing CP Pistons. The head gets a valve job with custom valves, head porting, and camshafts. With the N/A RS1 engine making as much HP as a Turbo car, they then had to figure out clutching and hit the track.
Beau’s Sparks-built RS1 is every bit competitive enough to win the SXS Pro (Turbo) class, but he just hasn’t had the best of luck in it yet. The inaugural race was Rd. 1 in Primm, where he was chasing down the physical leaders and got completely taken out by a lapper. The car was nearly totaled, and he was pretty banged up as well. Needless to say, a DNF led to lots of time, work and money in the garage to be back for round 2 in Havasu. Starting deep in the third row after his DNF from Primm, Beau worked his way to an incredible 2nd place finish in the Turbo class behind Cody Bradbury. Round 3 was Peoria, AZ where Matt Hancock won his first Turbo Class race in his Kraftwerks Super Charged RZR XP. Beau ended up 4th by less than one second on adjusted time, after a great battle with the Miller Brothers in their X3s. Round 4/5 was in Vegas, and a part failure caused him a second, dreaded DNF for the season. The next round is Mesquite, NV, and we can’t wait to see him land this thing on top of the box. The speed, handling, desire, and ability is definitely there, it’s just time for a little better luck!
