The Pioneer 500 boasts a fuel-injected longitudinally-mounted 475 cc engine mated to a five-speed electric-shift transmission with ultra-low first gear for additional off-road ready torque. WHAT A RIDE!
W
e’ve been out on a lot of rides this spring and early summer for various reasons, be it charities, office experiments, family rides or just groups of us getting together. All of them have had a common factor, and that’s the extra water and deeper mud. Winches have been used a lot more and the conversation of tires has been beaten down over and over again in the shop with no clear winner just a lot of armchair racing so to speak. The lakes and ponds in our region have yet to drop down to

normal depths and it doesn’t look like that’s in the cards anytime soon. Usually, this time of year the rides seem to be getting a little dustier on the trails and the mud is starting to disappear unless it recently rained. In my corner of the ATV World, it’s been everything but dry, certainly no good dust clouds yet in my area, other than on a rail grade. I find myself contemplating whether or not to pack a life jacket or water wings over a dust mask these days. At any rate, I’m sure the water will be dropping soon enough and we will asking for more rain to deal with the dust. It seems like on one is ever 100 percent satisfied with the temperature or the way that the temperature affects the terrain. But once you’re out there on the trail, it’s all good. This is issue has some great features for you with the new and unique Can-Am Defender 6x6, Racing the Baja, and an inside look at the 4-seater Honda Talon. If you’re wondering what the future might look like, Charles Bombardier has designed a possible future off-road vehicle. Charles will be contributing one of his ideas in future issues of ATV World Magazine. This issue is a great read with lots information for you. Until next time, we’ll be out on the trails.

2ND LIFE FOR EV BATTERIES?
Many people have been scratching their heads over the years wondering where all the used EV batteries will end up. Honda and American Electric Power are working together, conducting needed research to develop a second life for these batteries. The goal is to integrate a network of used EV batteries into American Electric Power’s electricity system. The batteries would be used as storage for the electric grid to help with electricity usage spikes. With more electric vehicles being sold daily, in the near future there could be a strain on the power grid, especially after the workday when these vehicles are being plugged in for charging.

scene it BAJA 500 Following a forced retirement from 16 years of Professional ATV Racing in 2013, we found ourselves compensating with the newly emerging UTV class almost immediately. The UTVs sudden rise in popularity, and an explosion of more and more capable Side by Sides made it almost possible to forget about our longstanding favorite pastime. We pretty much jumped ship on the quad scene all together, as many of our friends were doing the same. Well, all it took was a phone call and an opportunity to get the ATV bug flowing again. My body would probably tell me to piss off if I told it we were racing the Baja 500, but an opportunity to take two new friends down to race for the first time sounded like a great idea. Just as we were planning out a full-on, last minute attack on the Baja 500, I received an invite for both of them to ride different sections for the R-Four ATV Racing team. The workload went from panicked to enjoyable and we all got to go pre-run for a week, and then help chase them to a very close 2nd place OA ATV.
Our new Hotel find at La Cueva Del Pirata was a terrible place to spend a few days. LOL
We resurrected the old race quads from a 5 year hiatus for Cole and Trey to pre-run on.

Built In Bead Breaker
Need to change your ATV tires, but don’t have a bead breaker for the dismount? Don’t worry, you probably have a trailer with a tongue jack. Pull the valve core and then you can use the jack with a 2x4 or metal plate to press the bead off. Flip the wheel over and repeat on the other side. You will want the trailer to be attached securely to your truck’s trailer ball so it can’t lift.

Getting Prehistoric On It

Don’t have a trailer, and can’t come up with a suitable board for a ramp? In a pinch we’ve even pulled this off by just pulling the truck directly onto the side of the tire. You will need to have the ATV/UTV wheel off to the side of truck tire, so as not to damage it. Once again, go slow and use extreme caution as you will need someone to hold the wheel in place. This method works much better with a good sized truck tire and will work for front ATV tires, and skinnier UTV tires, but is pretty difficult with a wider tire, like an ATV rear or stock rear UTV tire. 40

Ratchet Strap Rescue
4
We showed you how to mount and inflate your new tires, but sometimes you get a collapsed one with a gap between the tire bead and the sealing bead on the wheel. This is common when the tires have been banded for shipping or when mounting on a wide wheel. A ratcheting motorcycle tie down, secured evenly around the center of the tire can help to evenly collapse the middle of tire and push the beads out towards the wheel. Carefully add air and be ready to release the strap as soon as the tire starts to take air.
Fill That Gap
4
Proper Pressure
6
In extreme cases, the gap is just too big and the ratchet strap method just won’t close it up enough to take air. In this case, you will need to fill the gap to get it to take air. We use an old motorcycle inner tube with the valve stem section cut out of it. Use plenty of lube, push the wheel into the backside of the tire, then wrap the inner tube around wheel at the area where the gap is. You will need to seat the tire into the inner tube far enough to get the back side bead to seat, then let air down, remove the inner tube, and now you’ll only have to fight to get one bead to seal instead of two.
Speaking to flats, bead leaks, and other sorts of tire troubles, air pressure plays a bigger part than one might think. Lower air pressure allows the tire to flex more for improved flotation and traction in mud and sand, but a higher air pressure adds puncture resistance for rocky terrain or high speed situations. Required pressures will vary between types of ATVs and UTVs, largely due to weight differences, but also affected by ply rating and types of tires. On our sport quads, we personally like 8-9 lbs. in the desert and 4-6 lbs. at the track or in the dunes. Heavier UTVs like the RZR 1000 might need somewhere between 16-22 lbs., depending on the tire brand.
The Dreaded Bead Leak
5
Quick Fill Chuck
7
Once you have determined that you have a leaky bead, try breaking that bead with a bead breaker, or one of the above methods. It is more than likely just dirty from aggressive riding with lower pressures, clean the bead thoroughly, lube it and re-seat the bead. If it still leaks, break it down again, coat the leaking bead area with silicone and reseat the bead. Let the silicone dry with just a couple of pounds in the tire before setting to your preferred air pressure.
Seating the bead on some tires takes quite a bit of air pressure, even to the point of being a little on the scary side. A few bucks at the automotive store can get you an air chuck with a clip that holds it on the valve stem, filling the tire while you sit back at a safe distance. The pro-tip is to take the air chuck apart and remove the pin that depresses the valve stem core. Rigged this way, you can fill the tires at a much quicker flow rate with the valve core removed. This is key when trying to get a tire to seat that has small gaps at the tire bead to wheel bead area. 41 ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 2

EASY TIRE MOUNTING
ismounting and mounting your own ATV and UTV tires takes minimal tools and is actually quite a bit easier than you might think. Yea, it might only be $20-$25 bucks a piece at your local shop, but a set of four adds up to a quick C-note, and you just might be able to do it yourself, in less time than it takes to drive them to the shop!
A conventional wheel will require breaking both beads with a bead breaker, and you only have to break the inside bead on a bead-lock. A decent bead breaker will set you back $50-$100, but we even showed you a few ways to do it without one in this issues Tips & Tricks column.
BEADLOCK
1 With the inner bead broken, you will remove all the beadlock clamping bolts. We like to use a cordless impact to speed up the process. Remove the ring.
3 Collapse one side of the tire with your foot and then pull the small beadlock side of the wheel through the tire.
5 Lubricate both beads of the tire to be mounted with the soap mixture. Set the smaller “beadlock” side of the wheel into the tire and force it in with your foot or hands. 42
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 2
2 Flip the wheel over and lubricate the bead area generously with a spray bottle full of a dish soap and water mixture.
4 Thoroughly wash the wheel and beadlock ring. We like to use a garden hose and a rag or brush to remove any caked on dirt or mud.
6 With the beadlock side of wheel pushed into the tire, flip the tire & wheel over and carefully center the tire over the threaded part of the wheel.

7 Set the beadlock ring in place and then install all the bolts by hand. We recommend using anti-seize on the bolt threads anytime steel bolts are to be threaded into aluminum.
9 Use a torque wrench to properly torque the beadlock ring bolts to the wheel manufacturers suggested torque spec.
8 With all the bolts started by hand, we use an electric impact to run all the bolts in to snug. Be sure to use a small adjustable torque impact set on low, or you will break bolts. If you don’t have an impact that you can turn down, just do them by hand.
10 We stick a wooded block or spacer under the backside of the wheel to essentially lift the rim while we push down on outside of tire, and fill the tire at the same time. This method helps with sealing up a large gap between the inner tire bead and inner wheel bead. With a clip-on tire chuck you can stand clear while the bead pops once you get it taking air.
NON-BEADLOCK CONVENTIONAL WHEEL
11 Lubricate the tire bead with soapy water and then attempt to push the smaller bell side of the wheel into the tire. You might get lucky here and have it go in, but probably not. 44

12 Force part of the tire in, and then use tire iron in reverse at an angle like shown. This will force the wheel in while pulling the tire over the lip of the wheel.
13 Flip the wheel over, step on one side to force it down into the drop center area, and then spoon the tire lip over the wheel with the tire irons, then follow through with a second tire iron after the first.

14 Keep grabbing little bites with the next tire iron while leaving the last one in the tire/wheel to keep it from slipping backwards on you.

15 With the tire spooned on, you will need to fill it with air. Use a compressor with lots of air volume and get yourself a clip-on chuck. Hitting the tire at 10 and 2 while it’s taking air will help it to seal up a bead to wheel gap and get the tire to actually inflate. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 2

hen someone starts shopping for an ATV, UTV or SXS unless you are faithful to one of the main manufacturers, the task of deciding which make, model and engine may be a taunting one. There has been an explosion of vehicles hitting the markets recently each year. It may sound great but only the strongest may survive. Take snowmobiling for example. Back in the late sixties and through the seventies snowmobile manufacturers seem to pop up overnight. My research has shown almost 300 recognized companies made some variant of a snowmobile. Some makes you may remember are Allouette, Argo, Ariens, Arlberg, Boa-Ski, Bolens,

Chaparral, Chrysler, Coleman, Evinrude, Harley-Davidson, Homelite, Husqvarna, John Deere, Johnson, Kawasaki, Massey Ferguson, Mercury, Moto-Ski, Northway, Raider, Rupp, Scorpion, Sears, Skiroule, Sno-Chief, Sno-Jet, Sno-Pony, Sno-Prince, Snowbug, Snow Crusier, Starcraft, Suzuki, and Viking to name a few. This also caused a glut of dealerships to pop up, sometimes what seemed as back yard shops which flooded small markets. Some of these manufacturing companies were quite large for their day, but when then fuel embargos hit and the economy slowed; some disappeared faster than they appeared on the scene while some were consumed by other companies. After all was said and done, the main four, Arctic-Cat, Polaris, SkiDoo and Yamaha weathered the storm. It is worth noting that even as recent as this year; limited number of certain sleds will be manufactured due to reduced sales and the number of non-current models still on dealership floors. Let’s now take a look at the motorcycle industry in the late sixties, through the seventies to the early eighties. During this era, motorcycles although a few new brands did come about (like Can-Am) the increases were caused by the variants of each model offered by each company, especially the big four Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha were huge. You could have variants of the same model of street bike from 50cc to over 600cc’s while off-road, enduro and motocross models also had many displacement sizes. During this time it was also quite easy to become a dealership while sometimes being less than an hour’s drive from a dealership with the same company. Again small “back yard” dealerships started to flood the markets. The cost of manufacturing so many models was starting to be realized as labour costs started to climb. Manufacturers turned to their marketing and accounting
This was a result of Kawasaki purchasing Sno-Jet. The Kawasaki Interceptor was an awesome sled.
departments to find ways of cutting costs. Model and variants were cut drastically. Some companies like Harley Davidson had to really reorganize to make ends meet. Motorcycles like Can-Am unfortunately did not survive and all that is left is the fond memories of those of us lucky enough to own one (or two) still has or the restored ones we drool over at motorcycle shows. Let’s now move forward to the ATV Industry that has grown substantially which now also includes UTV’s and SXS’s. Not that many years ago considered a new comer to the recreational motorsport scene, now has surpassed their two-wheeled siblings in sales in North America and most likely doesn’t see them in the rear view mirror. In the 1990’s, nearly every major ATV manufacturer began to offer Youth ATVs in the 50 and 90cc class. The main ATV OEM’s of the time tapped into inexpensive tooling and manufacturing by having these ATVs produced in Southeast Asia, while using their own testing facilities and personnel to validate the designs so they met some minimum performance and reliability standards. The result was annual unit sales in the tens of thousands with minimal investment. These development programs made OEMs a lot of money, but they also helped certain scooter manufacturers in SE Asia become more proficient at making quads. Later, some enterprising American importers recognized that SE Asian ATVs were getting better and they could still sell them at very low prices. As a result, more and more importers were offering Asian quads. This has been referred to as the “Asian Invasion”. Low-cost machines started coming from China and Taiwan that competed head-on with models from the main ATV OEM’s in engine classes lower than 500ccs. Many small ATV’s began being sold as disposable, one-summer power toys with no service or support. The industry was changed as these manufactures began developing and delivering better and better quality machines. Whoever offers the best products at prices that customers can afford will win the marketshare war in the long term. Now sitting on the sidelines watching and wanting a slice of this rapidly growing business were companies like John Deere, Massey Fergusion, BobCat, Kabota, Mahindra, Caterpillar and the list could continue on. These equipment manufacturers’ not only have the tools to build this class of vehicle, they have the engineering and background to build quality equipment. They are building entirely new types of vehicles that could
be classified as motorized tool platforms that could double as your ride to your favorite fishing hole on the weekend. A “thinning of the herd” (or ATV manufacturers) will most likely occur. If the past is preamble, the snowmobile industry of the early to mid 1970s reveals what could be coming for ATV/ UTV/SXS companies. If overall ATV, UTV and SXS sales flatten out or decline, the lower sales will force some out of the ATV marketplace. With the economy, the cost of the vehicles, interest rates and the reliability of current equipment, some major ATV companies have reported drops in unit sales. It could be unforeseen to see which companies say Uncle if the shakeout occurs.

TRUE OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY The thing that really sets the Defender 6x6 apart from anything in its class, is that its in a class of its own. There are other UTV’s with extremely large payload capabilities and there are plenty of UTV’s that are extremely capable in extreme off-road conditions, but they don’t typically excel at both. In most cases a heavy payload is achieved with overly stiff suspension and minimal wheel travel, this is not at all what BRP was looking for with the Defender. UN-MATCHED WORK-ABILITY The entire 2020 HD10 Defender line-up gets the newly revised and significantly more powerful 82hp Rotax engine with an industry-leading 69 ft-lb of torque. This revised power-plant produces peak torque at lower RPM for optimal delivery while helping to achieve it’s class-leading 3000 lb. towing capacity. This impressive torque output is also a key factor in the 6x6’s incredible 453 kg (1000 lb.) cargo bed capacity. Alongside this significant power increase, the 2020 Defenders also gets a thicker firewall for reduced heat and sound in the cab. The Defender’s PRO-TORQ transmission is calibrated to make optimal use of the Defender’s available power with a Quick Response System to enhance lowspeed operation, and deliver smoother and more responsive power delivery with precise engagement. For 2019, Honda came through with a late but expected entry into the performance end of the Side-by-Side market. It’s the Honda Talon, and they were very good at letting the proverbial cat out of the bag very early. In fact, intel was dropped months before the Talon was even available to purchase, therefore allowing customers to hold onto their dollars for a Honda purchase when it was actually released. As if pulling another play from the same playbook, Honda has done it again with an equally as expected unit - the four door Talon. Here it is July, and they are letting us know about upcoming 2020 models. Truth be told, there were two models that we were introduced to at the Texas MotorPlex press launch, the Talon 1000X-4 and Talon 1000X-4 Live Valve. These two 2020 models are set to be released in August or September of this year. While a 4 door entry was inevitable, the Live valve Fox Shock version was a surprise. We were kind of hoping for a Turbo version, as we’re all motor heads at heart. The 4 seat Talon shares 88% parts similarity with the 2 door X model, so it’s virtually the same car with a longer frame, a couple of extra doors, and some added seating. The seating is stadium style, in that the rear seats are placed higher up than the fronts, offering a better sight line over the front occupants, and more leg room than expected. There is actually enough leg room for the over 6’ tall crowd that were the ones complaining about most of the competition’s four door models.

he four door is an X model, meaning it’s a 64” wide car, just the same as most of your other standard models from Polaris, Yamaha, and a lot of the Can-Ams. We were not able to test drive the four door, but were able to sit in it and go over it. Plus, they had a skeletonized version for us to look over many of the build quality details. We are looking forward to the release and actually getting our hands on the Live Valve model to see if Honda has one-upped its competitors.

Honda worked with Bosch to develop a control module that takes readings off a multitude of things, to make suspension adjustment at about 16 times per second; throttle, braking, steering, and gear-selection are all factored in. Essentially, the Live Valve takes a lot of reads from what the car is doing, and makes very fast changes to the low speed compression adjustment, to better your ride. Honda only showed it to us in the 4 door model, but if we were betting people, we would bet on it being released on the 2 door sometime in 2020 as well.

TURBO Honda did bring a Turbo car for us to test drive at the Texas MotorPlex, it just wasn’t a Honda product….yet? The Turbo was brought to us by one of Honda’s long time racing partners, Jackson Racing. Jackson Racing has worked with Honda since the 70s on forced induction for the automotive line, including racing Hondas in many different organizations, and winning championships in many different automotive formats including SCCA and Score. This is a complete, well developed package and is going through California’s Air Resource Board testing now, so it should pass the toughest of emissions testing. The com-
plete kit should be available sometime in August at a retail of $5799 U.S. The kit is very complete and relatively easy to install in about 5 hours. Honda had already made the oil passageways tapped and plugged in the cases, making it a bolt-on package. Jackson Racing worked with Garrett to develop an OEM quality Turbo. It includes a tig welded, heavy wall, stainless steel exhaust manifold that bolts to the stock exhaust. The intercooler uses a Garret core, with Jackson Racing cast end tanks for durability and maximum cooling. A new high-flow air filter system is also included with the kit. Jackson supplies an ECU tuning tool to re-flash the stock ECU, correcting many parameters including shift points, fuel mapping and more.
WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO GET ONE LAP IN THE TURBO EQUIPPED CAR. EACH EDITOR WAS GIVEN A PRACTICE LAP AROUND THE COUPLE MILE MOTORPLEX TRACK, AND THEN GIVEN ONE LAP IN THE TURBO EQUIPPED CAR.
The turbo kit is truly bolt-on, no welding, tapping, drilling, and is completely plug and play. We were only able to get one lap in the Turbo equipped car. Each editor was given a practice lap around the couple mile Motorplex track, and then given one lap in the Turbo equipped car. It was nice to actually get some kind of feeling for the car, but we were a bit to constrained in time, and having to follow a lead car kept us a little reigned in, so we can’t really give you a full test. The turbo certainly gave it a significant boost in HP. We did notice that the turbo spooled up really quickly in the low gears, and if you stayed on the throttle, it stayed spooled up throughout the gears. It seemed to have less turbo lag than any of the other current production cars, but then again, test time was extremely limited. Jackson Racing claims a 60% horsepower increase, while still using 91 octane pump gas. We’re hoping to get a kit from Jackson Racing ASAP, so we can do an actual evaluation. So stay tuned.

In 1959, the BB Carrier was invented by J-A Bombardier, and it was designed to handle everything from marshes to deep water, allowing the driver to never have to turn back because of the terrain. Unfortunately, due to a low demand, the BB Carrier was only in production from 1959 through 1961, and was never produced in large numbers. Understanding that marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes still pose a problem for off-road enthusiasts, Charles Bombardier started to think outside the box, and figure out how a next generation amphibious vehicle with a price tag of around $40,000 could be designed.
OPTIONAL TIRE TREAD PATTERNS WOULD BE AVAILABLE, DEPENDING ON WHAT TYPE OF TERRAIN YOU RIDE ON.

The QB is an amphibious, enclosed cab, side-by-side vehicle designed to keep the driver and one passenger free from the elements, and able to traverse not only marshes, but also deep water lakes and rivers, 12 months of the year, no matter the season. To keep the weight of the QB to a minimum, it would be manufactured on an all aluminum chassis with a modified 100hp Rotax 1000R engine. The Rotax 1000R engine is important for the QB, as it can be adapted to drive a hydraulic system. One of the features of the QB is that it would be equipped with four hydraulic motors, one being on each wheel. The automatic transmission would fea-

ture high, low and reverse gears, similar to other side-by-sides. With lots of focus on the steering of the QB, the driver can alternate the steering mode between power steering and skid steering, depending on the need. When in the power steering mode, all the wheels could be steered to allow for a short turning radius. With concerns to the environment, the QB was designed to have less of an impact as the power distribution would be managed by an onboard computer system. The system would optimize traction and minimize the environmental impact by limiting tire spin, and thus the destruction of the top layer of soil, and would further reduce the ground impact. The onboard computer system would also provide for greater fuel economy by changing tire inflations, and also managing power distribution to each wheel while on the fly. Charles Bombardier designed the QB to be an off-road vehicle that could do everything and everything extremely well all for around the $40,000 mark. Charles did comment that he felt the QB is a little larger than needed for a side-by-side, as it was designed to accommodate large tires and was inspired by two of his other designs, the Fat Truck which is in production, and the Typhon which is a prototype.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The QB Concept was imagined in May 2019 by Charles Bombardier, and the images were created by Adolfo Esquivel.

FINNTRAIL AQUAMASTER RED 1526 WADERS
Finntrail was thinking outside of the box! These waders have a unique cut, which ensures comfort and durability. The knee and seat areas are reinforced with a new five-layer fabric with a HARD-TEX membrane. The inner part of the legs, which usually gets frayed faster, is completely seamless. The highest level of comfort and durability is achieved by the combination of a lightweight fabric. A water-resistant chest pocket with a zipper, which protects against direct ingress of water and mud, is an excellent and needed feature. The most stylish design is made in bright colors for those who prefer to stand out from the crowd and stay safe. All technologies used in this model ensure long service life and comfort. Waders are equipped with two water-resistant pockets, an ergonomic fit, D-loops, drying loops, elastic suspenders and a belt with a YKK-buckle. For further details head over to www.finntrail.com

Riding an ATV in wet conditions Membrane waders make the best choice for those who are ready to overcome any water barriers. Membrane waders are completely waterproof, yet breathable, durable and reliable in all weather conditions. Waders, predominantly the fishing models, hold a prominent position in the market. The ones we choose are made specifically for ATV and UTV riding, designed by the Finnish brand, FINNTRAIL. Let`s see how they differentiate from your standard fishing waders. ATV and UTV riding have been known to be a little more of an extreme sport than fishing. Riders wearing waders face many difficult obstacles, as they could get hooked on branches or various parts of an ATV tearing the fabrics. Fishing waders are not built to last that long in such conditions. FINNTRAIL wading gear is made from a more
At
some point every ATV owner has wondered what kind of gear would help to overcome all the wet obstacles, such as direct water crossings and mud ingress, while at the same time provide waterproof protection and excellent comfort. Many ATV owners feel perfectly fine wearing rubber boots if it is only their feet at risk for getting wet. Unfortunately, simple rubber boots lack the height to really keep water out.

durable fabric and materials; The lower part of the waders (up to the waist) is made of a multi-layer fabric with a HARD-TEX membrane and a durable Kevlar outer layer. Water-resistant pockets have strong zippers to protect valuables against direct water and mud ingress. FINNTRAIL pays great attention to wading boots as well. The rubber boots in fishing waders can tear quickly in contact with the ATV wheels, or metal foot pegs. To avoid this FINNTRAIL wading boots are made of damage-resistant and durable material.
The majority of FINNTRAIL jackets provide a high degree of water and mud protection. Jackets have a magnetic flap with snaps instead of Velcro. The Velcro can get clogged with mud which hinders it’s functions, but thanks to a magnetic flap with snaps, the main zipper is mud-resistant. Some FINNTRAIL jackets are also fitted with waterproof wrist cuffs providing 100% protection against water ingress inside the sleeves.
FINNTRAIL waders are the perfect choice for ATV & UTV riders who prefer extreme riding conditions. They will help to traverse chest-deep water or mud providing 100% waterproof protection and excellent comfort for all day. Each rider takes pictures with their expensive smartphones and it is often the case that water, or mud gets into the pocket and the smartphone stops working. The cost of the repairs varies from 100$ to 1000$. FINNTRAIL takes care of their customers! With the purchase of any wader model, buyers score a bonus waterproof smartphone pouch!
