GEARING UP! We take in side-by-side and ATV racing even a mud bog race and it’s definitely the fastest and largest growing segment at Haydays. If you can’t make it out to North Branch, MN there are other events on the horizon like to Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersport Show (TISAPS). TISAPS happens to be the World’s Largest Snowmobile, ATV & Powerpsorts Show and is held annually at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, this October 25, 26, 27, 2019. Until next time, I’ll be starting to organize my fall parts from last year and adding a few to my shopping list for the fall.

Fall is only a few months out and we are coming into my favourite time, maybe because the heavy humid air will soon lift, and just a matter of weeks before the bugs that bite are pretty much gone for the year. After the hot summer months we had this year the change is good. Trade shows are great to replenish your off-road needs, they’re great one-stop shop for everything from oils and skid plates to winches to actual new vehicles. One event that we attend annually at the end of summer is Haydays, the weekend after Labor Day.

Kyle Chaney piloted his Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R to both the Saturday and Sunday’s Pro Mod SxS class at the 26thAnnual Forest County Potawatomi Bush Run at the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway in WI. Fellow Can-Am racer, Cody Miller and his co-pilot Allie Spurgeon placed their Maverick X3 X ds Turbo R at the top of the pile winning round four of the American Cross Country Championship (AXCC) race at the Crossbar Ranch in Davis, OK., in the Pro Turbo UTV class.

CAN-AM SLAM DUNKS THE BEST IN THE DESERT Can-Am factory racer and three time UTV World Champion Phil Burton won his third consecutive Best In The Desert (BITD) Vegas to Reno race. Blurton and co-pilot Beau Judge took their third straight BITD UTV Pro Turbo Class championship aboard their Maverick X3 Turbo. Their final time was 9:37:28 was over 20 minutes faster than second place of fellow Can-Am racers Derek and Jason Murray.

2019 High Lifter Quadna Mud Nationals

The Crew from ATV WORLD geared up and headed out to the High Lifter Quadna Mud National in Hill City, Minnesota. We enjoyed the 3-day event, which featured an endless trail system, an obstacle course, a sled pull, mud bogs, a poker run, awesome nightly concerts and some really good exhibitor booths. Special thanks to Mark Warnert from Quadna Mountain Park for hooking us up with a ride so that we could experience everything that the High Lifter event had to offer! We can’t wait for the dates to be announced for next year’s event.

It was bumper-to-bumper at the VIP Day Ride.

We’d like to applaud the individuals in charge of trail signage. It was impossible to get turned around. 26

BIG RED GUM

Since 1975, Big Red Gum has wowed people’s mouths across North America with its bold cinnamon flavour. Having one of the best marketing jingles to date, “Go ahead and kiss a little longer with Big Red chewing gum”. Making young children gag and making Big Red the go to gum for high schools and colleges everywhere. The gum has been released, discontinued and re released around the world over it’s 44 year history and is currently available in 17 countries. Typical the gum is red in colour, however in Germany, Norway and Poland it’s white. Marketing in those countries boast that it is hot in flavour and therefore should be white…We say that if you have a color in your products name than the product should reflect it and bring back the jingle!

BIG RED THREE WHEELER

In 1982, Honda launched the first specifically designed utility off-road vehicle the ATC200E three wheeler. Initially the ATC 200E three wheeler featured a 192cc – 13 HP - 4-stroke engine, electric start, semi-automatic dual range 5 speed transmission, front and back racks, and for suspension it only had front telescopic forks. The popularity of this Big Red in North America was huge amongst outdoorsmen and ranchers of all types. The ability to go through and over most terrain with ease and also be able to tow a trailer made it a very popular vehicle. Later models of the Big Red featured larger engines, rear suspension, gauges, reverse and other features making it even more appealing to the masses.

BIG RED (SOFT DRINK)

Originally known in 1937 as the Sun Tang Red Cream Soda by its founders Grover C. Thomsen and R.H. Roark from Waco, Texas. It was only renamed in 1969 by way of luck when a golf caddy was overheard by one of the then company presidents referring to the popular drink as “Big Red”. The Big Red drink is known as the original “red cream soda” especially in the southern US, so it’s only suiting that in 2018 the Louisville Kentucky Mayor, declared May 16 be “Big Red Day” and that’s how a legend is born!

The vision was for a driver-to-machine connection like we’ve never yet seen before in a UTV. Starting at the driver, the all-new seats are positioned as low as possible for improved cornering confidence and a lower overall CG. The new seats are thinner and denser than what we’re used to, and they feature multiple relief cutouts to encourage airflow and decrease back sweating. A new and improved six-point retractable harness features more retraction points with better placement that is said to keep them from unwanted lock-ups. The new “Pro” class seats are also more adjustable than any UTV seat we’ve ever seen. Polaris added a very slick tilt adjustment, and they also slide further forward and back than ever before. How is it that they could make the seats slide any further, you might ask? Polaris engineers have actually designed a whole cab for the Pro XP, with an additional four inches of width and six inches of length. Larger drivers rejoice, they’ve finally given you the leg and elbow room you deserve. Increasing the size of the cab not only helped with comfort, but also created

more room for storage. The RZR Pro XP will feature a tilt wheel function and the Premium & Ultimate machines take it even further with a telescoping steering column that can put the steering wheel in exactly any position you may want it. The new “Pro” class steering wheel is a whole other topic of conversation in itself. The race inspired, “D” shaped factory steering wheel is one of the nicest we’ve seen yet, but what’s even cooler is that they’ve built in rocker switches to control the Dynamic Suspension and toggle through the Ride Commands functions. They even included an “oh $H8T” button that gives you instant, full stiff compression for those unsuspecting g outs and other types of trail surprises. Speaking to the new and improved, latest version of Ride Command that you will find in the “Pro” XP, this newest offering includes a GPS

antenna that allows for the Group Ride feature, with vehicle to vehicle pairing and convenient trail tracking, without the need for cell service or signal. They now all feature Bluetooth, and the Ultimate Pro XP model even comes with a preinstalled 400-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system. This stock included stereo system sounds killer by itself, and is even upgradeable to 800 watts with accessory stage kits. Sitting in the new Pro XP cockpit really lets you appreciate the extra room and the amount of work they have put into it. You sit way down in it compared to previous RZR models, and feel really connected to it when holding the steering wheel. The additional leg room is great, but they’ve also improved the previously cramped “dead pedal” area for the drivers left foot. They’ve even greatly improved the cupholders.

POWER FOR DAYS The all-new Pro XP engine uses a larger, water cooled turbo for more reliable cooling and heat dissipation. The bigger turbo creates more boost, helping to produce an impressive 181HP. The XP Pro’s power-band is focused on improving acceleration in the 20-50 mph range, helping drivers to maintain optimum speeds on tighter, or more technical terrain. To put this extra power to the ground, the RZR team has upgraded their AWD system for even faster engagement when the tires slip as little as three degrees.

The current Pro XP models as of now are all three, 64” wide machines, but the new, longer and stronger one piece chassis gives the “Pro” a 96” wheelbase for improved straight-line stability and handling. This 96” wheelbase puts the “Pro” right in the middle between the RZR XP and the Can-Am X3. The new oversized ROPS cage design is impressive looking, as well as being incredibly stronger than previous RZR cages. The new “Pro” cage is built with 2 inch diameter steel instead of the usual 1.75”, and its design uses one single run of tubing from the rear

The strongest Polaris drivetrain ever, it includes eight-times stronger axles, a 39% stronger transmission, and a three times stronger front drive, assembled on the strongest chassis we’ve seen yet on a RZR. The newly designed clutch features a new primary and secondary with increased airflow that actually pulls contaminants away from the belt. Polaris engineers claim that the new clutch design pulled higher belt operating temps 46

to the front for additional strength. They claim to now have the strongest cage on the market. The “Pro” suspension components have been redesigned for ground clearance, and beefed up drastically for durability. All three machines pull 20 inches of front wheel travel and 22 inches of rear travel. The base model is equipped with compression and preload adjustable Walker Evans Needle Valve shocks, and the Ultimate model gets the highly refined and revolved 2.0 version of the FOX live Valve Dynamix suspension.

Aside from a couple of bold new color ways, the premium Maverick X3 models will also get a massive new display for 2020. The new digital display is 19.3 cm (7.6 in) in diameter, with easy to read gauge options, and a new interactive keypad for selecting driving modes, etc. The X package model X3’s will also get new 14” cast aluminum beadlocks. The X rs Turbo RR package Maverick X3’s will now get a more conventional tire set up with 9” wide fronts and 11” wide rears. This is said to reduce front-end kickback, enhance traction, and improve its ability to drive into the corners from the rear. harles Bombardier had these obstacles in mind when he imagined the Aeole as a vehicle that would eliminate many variables when exploring. The flying Aeole is an electric, autonomous vertical take-off aircraft that would be designed to pick up and fly a fully loaded Side-by-Side over any obstacle. The Aeole would change how we travel with our Side-by-Sides; imagine being able to quickly cross a large body of water

that would take a day to get around, but only minutes to fly over. If the terrain became to rugged and seemed impassable, the Aeole could assist to fly over any terrain, making off road travel easier at times, and also allowing the off-road enthusiasts to go even further than previously imagined. The Aeole would be created using existing technology like the Ehang 184 AAV autonomous vehicle. The Ehang focuses on short to medium travel distances, and is said to be the safest and smartest low

altitude autonomous aerial vehicle. This type of technology would be perfect for what the Aeole is designed to do with a Side-by-Side. With the Aeole being an electric, autonomous vehicle, it’s designed to be able to carry the weight of a fully loaded Side-by-Side, with a safe flight duration of 30 minutes. If there were any malfunction with a component or a disconnection, the Aeole would land immediately. After the delivery of the Side-by-Side, the flying Aeole would have to fly itself to the nearest solar charging station, using its

eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) capacity. Charles’s vision includes the Aeole flying away when not in use to a charging station, waiting for its next summons to help cross the next obstacle. Charles also has a vision that Aeole could be fitted with two combustion aircraft engines such as the Rotax 915 iS, in lieu of electric. To some, this might be more realistic in 2020, but maybe not in the near future. The Rotax 915 iS aircraft engine is a four-cylinder, four-stroke turbocharged, air/liquid cooled gas engine with 141 HP, and would be a perfect fit

future look for the Aeole. Currently, these engines can be found on ultra-lights, homebuilt and light, sport aircrafts, as well as small helicopters. In Charles’s version of a gas powered Aeole, there would be two Rotax 915 iS aircraft engines producing a total of 282 HP. The Aeole could be the future of 3D powersports transportation for not just Side-by-Side vehicles, but other vehicles like snowmobiles, ATVs, PWC, and even motorcycles. All of these vehicle owners would benefit by having the ability to be transported above delicate or hazardous terrain using various types of eVTOL machines like the Aeole. The future might be larger than a single Aeole owner. Picture Aeoles stationed across, and owned by a Province, State, or trail federation where there is a need to transport around an area such as a lake, river or delicate environmental area. For a fee, the Aeole would take you to the other side of the hazard and fly back to the charging station to wait for the next fare.

The Designer The Aeole concept was imagined in June 2019 by Charles Bombardier, and designed by Jorge Ciprian, an Industrial Designer from Argentina. Jorge graduated with a degree in design from the University of Buenos Aires, and he currently works as a freelance designer. Jorge also created the images of the Fountainhead drone parking tower and the Solorocket launch complex for Imaginactive.

About Charles Bombardier The grandson of Joseph-Armand Bombardier, Charles has a wealth of experience in the design and engineering of vehicles during his time at BRP including the Can-Am Traxter, the second generation Ski-Doo Elite and the Can-Am Spyder Roadster. In 2008 Bombardier founded a private Research and Development Center and developed electric urban transporters and electric ATV prototypes. With a passion for innovation, Charles is deeply involved within the design community and acts as an expert and a consultant to support inventors, companies and basically anyone interested in new applications for mechanical engineering. finally did make the trek to Silver Lake with my family in 2010, wheeling our lifted Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. We had an amazing time exploring the dunes, but at a slower pace than I would have when I was in my teens, piloting a Quadracer 250. We loved the town and filled our week camping, playing on the beach, swimming, boating, exploring historic lighthouses and spent some part of every day in the dunes. We enjoyed the area so much that we all agreed we wanted to go back someday. You see, this desire to return to Silver Lake produced a bit of a conundrum for our family. We pride ourselves in never vacationing in the same place twice. Life is short, and we want to see and experience new things, so while this desire existed, we carried on with new adventures.

That all changed in January 2018, when the Michigan Department of Natural Resources opened 6300 miles of state forest roads to ORV users. This new development meant we could visit the dunes again, and explore the beauty of the excellent trail network of the Northern Lower Peninsula. We immediately began planning a twoweek motorsports adventure. We decided to split our vacation in half, and the first week was all about the dunes in Silver Lake. Week two would see us exploring the trail system and newly opened forest roads of the Lower Peninsula, using Alanson as our base of operations. Our Law Enforcement Maverick X3 Max build dubbed the Guardian, was loaded into the race trailer and we set out first thing on Monday morning. The drive, including the border crossing and a bit of site seeing along the way, took us about 10 hours, and we arrived in Silver Lake mid-afternoon.

The town was just as we had remembered it, with all kinds of cool, off-road toys driving around and parked in every lot. It was great to be back. We grabbed an early dinner and checked in at the Sierra Sands Family Lodge. Having been to Silver Lake before, we were aware of how busy things get on the weekend. Our plan was to hit the dunes daily for the next 4 days, and avoid some of the crowds later in the week. During the summer months the park is open at 9 am, and we were one of the first vehicles through the gate and purchased our permits for the week. For out of state residents, you will require the following for entry to the park in a UTV – Michigan ORV Permit, ($26.25) Michigan ORV Trail Permit, ($10.00) and a Silver Lake State Park Recreation Passport ($9.00 per day or $33.00 for the annual pass). In addition to the above, we had to purchase a second $33.00 Recreation Passport for our tow vehicle to park in the lot and unload the UTV. The parking fills up quickly, even during the week, and it is a bit of a chore to navigate the lot with a full-size truck and race trailer. The Park is aware of this and is constructing a second lot further up the road, but all of this could be alleviated by passing a by-law allowing licensed OHV travel on the area’s roadways. We spoke to several business owners and they are working diligently trying to make legal road travel a reality. 68

The X3 was unloaded from the trailer, we affixed our dune flag to the front bumper, and drove up to the gate where park staff checked our vehicle. Our Yoshimira exhaust was checked for a spark arrester and then tested, making sure we were under the mandated 94 dBa. Once you pass the gate, the single lane, one-way access road takes you to the northeast corner of the OHV area. From this point, you can decide to head down into the flats towards the beach area, or turn south and try your luck with Test Hill, the first of the larger dunes. The largest dunes run north to south and are one-way traffic only to prevent head on collisions, as vehicles crest the 100-foot plus hills. The remainder of the OHV area allows you to play around without directional restrictions, just remember to always be scanning for the tips of other riders’ flags as you enjoy the naturally undulating terrain.

The beach is beautiful, with a shallow sandy bottom which is perfect for little ones or tossing around a football. As a bonus, with all the vehicles backed in to the rope line, it is an ever-changing car show, with one-off rigs coming and going throughout the day. One of our favorite spots during the week was the drag strip located in the center of the dunes. All you have to do is line up and wait for others to take up the challenge. It was a blast racing our heavily modified X3 against other SxS’s, sand rails, trucks, Jeeps and quads. We had an amazing time during our week in Silver Lake, and the area once again left us with the desire to come back in the future.

When researching the trail portion of our trip, we kept coming across the name Dave Jabrish and his web site – www. fishweb.com The site is a must visit before planning any off-road trip to Michigan. Fishweb has all the information and links you will need including trail maps, local dealers, lodging and events. In addition to OHV content, Dave has the 4 seasons covered with resources for fishing, golfing, paddling, hiking and snowmobiling. After talking to Dave and pouring over the trail maps, we chose Alanson as our base of operations for the week. Alanson is situated on the banks of the Crooked River, a major link in the inland Waterway of Northern Michigan. While we love spending time on the trails, we always like to take in a little bit of the local history and attractions when we travel. Alanson is a short 30-minute drive to Mackinac City and 15 minutes from Petoskey. We took advantage of this during our stay, visiting historic Mackinac Island, and chartering a fishing vessel on Little Traverse Bay. We stayed at Staffords’s Crooked River Lodge – www.staffords.com/crooked-riverlodge/ just outside of town, and enjoyed all the amenities including the large, trailer friendly parking lot. The resort is in the heart of ATV country with several trail heads within a 30-minute drive, allowing us to spend more time on the trails. For our first ride, we hooked up with Dave and some friends for a day on the

Indian River OHV Route. Local knowledge is hard to beat, and these fine folks made sure we didn’t miss a thing along the way. The areas we rode during our stay provided a great balance between tight bush and open fire roads, and visitors can easily pick the trails that best suit their vehicle and riding style. The area is dotted with lakes and rivers that make a perfect lunch stop, and we really enjoyed both the wooded sections as well as the rolling farm land, all of which can be experienced in a single day’s ride.

It is obvious from the trail head parking lots, excellent signage and trail conditions that the fine folks in the Lower Peninsula are serious about their off roading. With the support of the local businesses, volunteers and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this ORV paradise can, and will, only get better. In fact, Michigan has so much to see and do, we may just have to break our own rule for a third time by coming back yet again!
