BE READY

hen the harsh winter hits with heavy snow, you have to be ready! This year we’re planning a few extra late nights in the shop as we set out to transform our RZR XP Turbo into a true winter miracle machine. In our area we get our fair share of snowfall, and for well over a decade we have been plowing our shop and office driveway with an ATV or Side-bySide. There’s never a shortage of volunteers to offer help plow. Locally, we see more ATV and Side-x-Side owners accessorizing their off-road vehicles to be more winter friendly by adding track kits or plow kits. I’ve spoken to local dealers about the growing popularity of winter use, and it’s quite simple; when they see their neighbors and friends utilizing the various options available, they want to join the group and take advantage of what their machines can do. Recently at the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show, I saw two Maverick X3 Turbos completely ready for a lunar landing- and or winter. One was a black tracked up beauty featuring many of Can-Am’s current available accessories, which was found in the factory BRP booth. It looked amazing and evil in the same breath. It somewhat resembled something that Darth Vader would own and operate, but without being enclosed with full doors, roof, windshield, etc. it wasn’t for “this guy”. The other was Track Systems Canada’s Maverick X3 Turbo

12

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 5

that was completely winter-ready. It had everything and more. It was modified with tracks, doors, windshield, heater, and lights, stereo were just a few key items I noted. When I saw this Maverick, I immediately added it to my wish list. It’s one thing to see a picture of these units in a magazine or online, but it’s a totally different thing when you can see first hand, touch it and sit behind the wheel. Just the other I went to the back shop and looked at the RZR Turbo sitting there seemingly waiting for warmer weather. I went back into the office and said to the guys that I wanted to be “that guy” from the tradeshow that owned that Maverick, this winter. We’re adding tracks, doors and wind protection to start but we are not sure where we are going to end up. One thing is for sure, there’s always room for additional lights, sound systems and heaters when you’re getting a Side-by-Side winter-ready. Until next time, enjoy the issue while we watch the Weather Network, waiting to get back out there to the ice hut in the deep snow. If you have a winter monster, please send it to us we’d like to see it! If we print it in the next issue we will send you a free t-shirt for your effort. Don’t forget to check out snowmobiler television this season, airing on OLN, Wild and MavTV.

SEGWAY ENTERS POWERSPORT 05 MARKET When the news first hit that Segway was entering the off-road market, most assumed their units would be featuring an electric motor. Suprising many of us, an electric motor is not an option. Instead two gas powered engine choices are available; a 570 4-stroke engine producing 86 horsepower and a 1000cc 4-stroke engine producing 107 horsepower. The new model line-up consists of four ATVs, three utility side-by-sides and two sport side-by-sides. Segway is currently looking for dealers for their new off-road endeavour.

10 CAN-AM WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE DAKAR RALLY WITH MAVERICK X3 For the third consecutive year, BRP outpaced the competition at the world-renowned Dakar Rally, which is coined as the world’s toughest race. In addition to winning the side-by-side vehicle category, Can-Am vehicles crossed the finish line in all of the top 20 positions. Casey Currie was a model of consistency, earning four daily stage podiums and never once finishing outside the top seven amongst the daily finishers in the first 11 stages. The American, who cruised to a comfortable finish on the final race day, always kept the focus on the ultimate prize. He found himself ranked within the top two spots in the general standings for the first six stages and in the top spot the remainder of the 12-stage race. Currie (California) and his co-driver, Sean Berriman (Nevada), reached the pinnacle of achievement as part of Team Monster Energy Can-Am during the grueling 7,500 km, 12-day race through the Saudi Arabian desert. Surprisingly this was the first time Americans have won the Dakar race. Currie, an SSV class racer, won Dakar the same day as his fellow countryman and two-wheeled racer Ricky Brabec (also a Californian) won the motorcycle class and the Overall becoming the first American to win the Dakar. Other members of the global Monster Energy Can-Am race team alongside Currie include Reinaldo Varela (Brazil), who finished in 9th place, and Gerard Farres (Spain), who finished in 11th place.

scene it THE 52nd ANNUAL BAJA 1000

B

itten hard by the Baja Bug, we’ve spent pretty much every November for the last 2 decades south of the border. Pre-running and racing the infamous Baja 1000, competing in this abusive endurance race on ATV’s for 14 years straight, the running joke was that we were only doing it in hopes of landing ourselves behind the wheel of a real-deal race car or trophy truck. Heavily modified and underpowered UTV’s arrived around 07-08 but were kind of a sideshow until OEM machines rapidly progressed like the RZR XP900, XP 1000, and into today’s current crop of long travel, turbo-charged SidexSides. Incredible new machines and factory support has quickly turned the UTV’s into a premier class, with tons of competition and talented drivers. We jumped ship on the ATV class for a UTV and a cage, after a pretty good crash in 2014. While financeable and way more obtainable than a Trophy Truck, UTV’s are still quite a bit more costly to race than an ATV. Budgetary reasons and responsibilities led to only racing select events on our own, but never turning down an opportunity to drive on anyone else’s team. Today’s race ready UTV’s are so good and capable than you will almost completely forget about wanting to race a “real” race car. This is… until you don’t have plans or an invite to race on a UTV team and you finally get that call from your neighbors at the San Felipe 250 with the bad ass Class 10 Car. After 19 years in Powersports classes, my friend Augi Cortez called with an invite to drive the San Felipe section in his very capable Class 10 car. The plan was to pre-run all week on Side by sides and then race be the third of four drivers at this years super Baja 1000. Topping that off, the wife would be racing her second Baja 1000 as my co-driver! Here’s some pics of it all going down.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 5

The 1078 race team was a serous effort with a solid crew of great people on board to help out.

Did we mention how much UTV’s have grown over the past couple years? A little parking lot trailer modification was in order before even leaving the country.

The wife and I got in two great days of pre-running in our flawless Can-Am Maverick X3. A ballsy move pre-running the remote sections of the Baja course solo, but this car has proven to be incredibly reliable and all we did was stop for fuel.

The seldom used and incredibly scenic Amarillo Wash was an incredible addition to this years Baja 1000 course.

This is what “worn out” looks like after an incredibly long day out on an extremely rough course.

In Baja we try to get every last mile out of our trailer tires.

Mike Cafro and Jaime Kirpatrick testing shocks in the San Felipe whoops with the guys from Elka Suspension.

Mike and Jaimie built and prepped this near stock RZR PRO XP in a matter of a few weeks.

Brett Comiskey brings his team all the way from Australia to compete in every SCORE and BITD race aboard this unbelievably nice Lone Star Racing built Can Am X3 Max. The Dakar Rally is without a doubt the toughest and longest Off-Road race in the world. Over the top preparation, planning, practice are the keys to success at this 7,500 KM, 12 day long race through the Saudi American desert. If you run a race jack, you will need to fabricate, and install lift points for the pin. Great care and thought should be put into the exact locations as you will usually be changing tires but also might need to lift the car for suspension or other repairs.

Excess available wattage or amperage is hard to come by on most UTV’s including the X3. A small, high quality, yet powerful light-bar provides enough light to race comfortably through the night. Mounting location is just as important and behind the top of the X3 shock towers proves to be a great spot for most. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 5

INSTALLING RUGGED RADIO’S HELMET KIT Rugged Radios ATV and Moto kit with complete wiring kit and 5 watt handheld radio.

At

ATV WORLD, we’ve been preaching about how cool and convenient a good comm. system can be for quite a while. What was once a pretty expensive set-up and typically found on race cars and high-end buggies, has now found its way into more mainstream power-sports use. Costs have come down and the technology is better than ever. Voice activated intercoms allow for simple, clear conversation between

multiple passengers in an off road vehicle like a UTV. Combined with a VHF/UHF radio, you can communicate between other vehicles at the push of a button as well. Rugged Radios offers solid mount, race quality intercoms and radios starting at a couple hundred bucks. They even have a complete entry level, 5 watt handheld kit with everything you need for use on an ATV or motorcycle for under $300. We’ve

shown how to install one of these systems in the Can-Am X3, and it’s something anyone can do. Unless you’re riding solo all the time, a quality communication system will truly make for a more enjoyable ride experience. We absolutely love ours, and find the only issue is that everyone involved needs a wired helmet to enjoy it. Until very recently, wiring a helmet with speakers and a mic was a fairly invasive job, and usually became a permanent fixture in the helmet. In most helmets, the ear speakers could be tucked in pretty easily, but the mic required hot glue, tape and sometimes even trimming of the styrofoam chin bar. This isn’t a huge deal to someone who’s setting up their car with a comm. system, but definitely a stretch for that guy or girl going out for their first UTV ride with you. Another issue with permanently wired helmets is that disassembly for proper cleaning can be a project in itself. This past year, Rugged Radios has changed all that with the invention of their new Helmet Kit Quick Mount; a Billet Aluminum mount for your microphone boom that clamps it cleanly and securely in place on just about any helmet. This unbelievable little product cuts install time to minutes, relieves the strain on the rest of the cabling, and is easily transferable between multiple helmets. We can’t believe it took someone this long to perfect mounting like this!

2 Press the helmet kit wiring loom into the mount block as shown in the photo.

MUD,

SWEAT

&Gears

THAT THERE SAYS IT ALL

O

ver the years while writing Mud, Sweat and Gears for ATV World, I have often discussed concerns around the safe operation of an ATV. I have been quite vocal in relating who should control what aspect of the sport, whether it be the government, the owner, or the manufacturer, to reduce injuries related to Off-Road Vehicles. Recently, there has been a push for more personal and vehicle safety equipment. I also have been reading lately on how ORVs have been becoming more popular with people that have physical disabilities. Some of these disabilities are actually injuries that are a direct result of an injury sustained while riding an ATV, or some other form of ORV.

So how do we sort this out? Well first, it’s important to keep a positive outlook on the topics and opinions about to be discussed, and see if we can end up with some positive outcomes. By generating discussion, we will promote awareness, and awareness will (hopefully) promote better decision making. No vehicle, no matter how many safety features go into the design, should be operated without the proper training. Along with the initial training, you need to acquire the experience that comes with time in the seat. I believe the ease of operation of newer vehicles confuses most people when it comes to the actual knowledge required for safe operation. I came to realize this even more when I took the course on becoming a Canada Safety Council (CSC) ATV Operator Trainer. I had been riding ATVs for many years, and I’ll admit that I was somewhat arrogant with respect to my ability to operate the ATV I had owned for a few years. The bottom line was that my arrogance actually got me into trouble while doing the riding portion of the training, and it almost resulted in me breaking my leg. Thankfully, the CSC Trainer recognized the situation and stopped me at the last second, and prevented me from putting my foot where I thought it should go, but actually would have been a real bad (and painful) decision. As with any training, we don’t know what we don’t know. Sometimes the school of “hard knocks” isn’t always the best way to learn. Now I know that many people will most likely want to hunt me down and beat me for the following statement, but I really do believe we should be licensed to be able to drive these vehicles, the same way as a boat operator or motorcycle rider is licensed. As I said before, the simplicity of operating these vehicles does not mean they are simple to operate safely. Another point of contention with me is the mindset on maintenance of these vehicles by some owners, dealerships and manufacturers. I am a licensed mechanic, and I see the importance of a vehicle having a Safety

Check when the ownership is being transferred from one person to another. It is unnerving to think that some people would not even think of driving a car at 80kmh if it had bad steering and brake components, but don’t think twice about going that speed on an ATV that may be in the same condition. One last issue is towards the Government, the Dealerships and Manufacturers. Since these vehicles are now licensed for the road, I do not understand why: a) The Government does not restrict the repairs of the vehicles to Licensed or Apprenticing Technicians. b) Some Dealerships do not have Licensed or Apprenticing Technicians to work on these high tech sport vehicles. c) The Manufacturers do not insist that Licensed or Apprenticing Technicians with factory training are required to maintain their dealership status. As far as safety devices that can be added to your ORV, the most controversial device that has been around for a couple of years is the idea of a roll bar. This idea is found on heavy equipment under the heading ROPS (roll over protection device). Recently, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, a federal consumer rights body, have approved it and the Commission recommended changes to what they called the “unsafe” design aspects of ATVs, including making roll bars mandatory. This has not proven popular with manufacturers like Honda and Yamaha. I have read where these OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) may have even suggested pulling out of Australia, saying the effectiveness of the device are unproven, and may cause worse injuries in an accident. Transport Canada has stated that although the devices are not mandatory in Canada, there is nothing stopping manufacturers from making them available for their vehicles. Google “ATV Roll Bars” for more info on this type of device. The last part of discussion is around the ease at which a person that even has a paraplegic classed disability can utilize a modern ATV. Modern ATVs have transmissions that do not need to be shifted, (CVTs) and any controls needed in relation to their operation are hand operated. The operation of the throttle and brakes are also hand controlled, and then we have power steering to reduce body effort when turning sharp or cornering on the roadway. Personally, I have close family members that require the use of walkers or crutches to be able to walk. As my one cousin says, I can get out and be “normal” with

everyone else. In another instance, it has allowed an elderly family member able to get back out and enjoy the hunting camp again, especially with receiving an Ontario government permit to allow him to shoot while sitting on his ATV. In researching this topic, along with the previously mentioned special permits in Ontario, I read that many states south of the border recognize the value of ATVs to those with disabilities, and are changing laws to reflect those opportunities. It benefits all our communities in both social and economic ways. In one case, I read about a man that put on over 39,000 miles (not kilometers) on his two ATVs, over a period of two years with his wheelchair strapped to a rear carrier. That there says it all.

ATV’s have been and continue to grow in popularity with riders with specific disabilities.

ATV Technology (as shown by this engine) continues to evolve. Electric fuel systems, electric steering, electronic transmission controls and electronic ignition systems require highly trained professional technicians not only to keep things running but running properly. CLIMATE CONTROL

THE DASH MOUNTED KEYPAD IS MUCH EASIER TO USE THAN THE TYPICAL BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL SET UP.

THE WELL THOUGHT OUT DEFENDER CAB IS 15% LARGER THAN THE COMPETITION WITH TILT STEERING AND ADJUSTABLE SEATING TO SUIT ANY SIZE DRIVER.

THE TWO TONE, LEATHER LOOK SEATS GIVE OFF A KING RANCH TYPE FEEL.

THE FACTORY INCLUDED AND INSTALLED 4500 POUND WINCH IS A LUXURY THAT COST’S A PRETTY PENNY WITH THE COMPETITION.

Air Conditioning has been a topic of conversation and frequent requests from both customers and dealers, since the competition introduced it three years ago. It seems that with any relatively new product, if you can’t be the first to market, you’d better be the best. While Polaris and John Deere have been busy selling HVAC equipped Side x Sides, it seems that Can Am has been not only paying attention, but actively working to improve on it. The idea was to not only create a better, more efficient Air Conditioning and Heater unit, but to merge them with the UTV Industry’s first ONE MAJOR Auto Climate mode. OBJECTIVE The Can-Am system offers selectable WITH DEFENDER heat, air conditioning, LIMITED’S HVAC and the Automatic Climate mode. The AutoSYSTEM WAS TO matic Climate mode CREATE BETTER regulates the cabin temperature using the COOLING AT A/C, heater and airLOWER RPM’S flow jointly. Like many newer automobiles, SUCH AS WORK the system requires SITUATIONS. little to no adjustment past setting a chosen temperature. The efficient, new aluminum heater provides 50% hotter air temps at full capacity, but the really trick set-up lies in the variable compressor. One major objective with Defender Limited’s HVAC system was to create better cooling at lower rpms, such as work situations. A variable compressor performs better and offers more capacity at low RPM or idle because it’s not even linked with the engine RPM. Combined with the Auto Climate system, the variable compressor creates a stable ambient temperature by reducing the flow of refrigerant in the circuit, once the desired temp has been reached. Reducing or eliminating the flow of refrigerant while the cabin is at the preferred temp significantly improves fuel efficiency and minimizes horsepower loss by decreasing the load on the motor when less AC is needed.

AIR QUALITY Can-Am engineers understood that in order to fully enjoy the benefits and comforts of climate control, you would need a dust free environment. Providing clean, crisp, breathable air inside the cab while driving in severe dust would be every bit as important as controlling its temperature. The answer was to improve cab sealing and effectively filter any air introduced by the HVAC system. The previous Defender Cab was completely reengineered to provide automotive quality sealing throughout the entire cockpit, doors and windows. New thicker and sealed front and rear firewalls help with the full cabin seal, as well as providing an improved sound and heat barrier. The Defender Limited HD 10 features sturdy, full doors with modern, electronic-opening windows and comfortable, rubberized door panels. A full, automotive-grade glass windshield is mounted with a bracket system that allows it to be tilted up and outwards, locking into one of three positions for increased airflow. The front windshield includes a wiper and washer kit with almost two liters of fluid for muddy or rainy operation. The rear features a solid mounted glass windshield. Capping it off, the Defender Limited gets a heavy duty plastic roof with an integrated headliner and an interior dome light. A massive new cabin filter sits conveniently under the front hood, allowing easy access for maintenance or replacement. Much like in an automobile, this large filter effectively scrubs the air clean as it’s introduced into the HVAC system, and or the cabin. The filter can be removed and blown out with compressed air, or replaced when necessary. The Defender system re-circulates the air from the cab, throughout the system to speed up the cooling process. The automatic system opens and closes, introducing fresh air when needed to minimize humidity. The systems 8 vents are strategically located for optimum heating and cooling efficiency. Four of them are up front for the passengers, two down low for your feet, and two of them keep the front window defrosted and fog free.

QUIET TIME Cabin noise level is another major factor when looking for true all-day comfort in a UTV. Whether working or playing, one of the coolest things about a UTV is sharing the experience, and being able to clearly converse without yelling at each other is a major part of that. In a big horsepower, pure sport UTV, the noise is incredible, and the answer for many lies in an intercom system like the ones we enjoy from Rugged Radio. They truly make all the difference, and once you use one, you won’t want go without. A full cab, sport-utility Side by Side should be a whole different story. The opportunity is there to insulate away noise, and the quieter you can get it, the easier and more enjoyable the rest of the experience can be. The entire cab got improvements to limit vibrations, harmonics, and noise transfer. Niceties like the headliner and rubberized door panels were just a few of the obvious ones. Can-Am didn’t stop at the CAB design when looking to create the quietest possible ride. To reduce in-cab and exterior noise they developed a new ultra-quiet exhaust system, and a new CVT calibration with a 500 RPM lower shift point will reduce the Defender’s engine noise under heavy acceleration. A final noise minimizing feature is the iTC ECO Mode that offers smoother engine operation and less cockpit noise and vibration. When all was said and done, the Defender Limited’s sound level or NVH (noise vibration harness) has been reduced by 60%.

MORE COOL 2020 HD10 STUFF 2020 was in fact a huge year for the entire Defender HD10 line up. Looking to improve HP, torque, and towing ability, Can-Am engineers came up with a better flowing head design that adds 10 HP and 8 ft. pounds of torque. This significant power increase leaves the Defender HD10 tied with the Ranger XP 1000 at 82 HP, and leading the class with 69 ft. lbs. of torque. Every 2020 HD10 Defender also got an updated power curve on eco mode for smoother operation. Another biggie for all 2020 Defenders is the new chassis that’s made from dual phase steel for 30% increase in rigidity and a 5lb. weight drop from the previous design. Including the HD10 Limited, the entire 2020 Defender lineup received a handful of noticeable updates to handling, appearance, and vehicle protection. A new suspension calibration and new front and rear arched 64” A-arms give the Defender extra clearance and a smoother ride. A new brake hold assist mechanism (e-brake) helps with restarting and shifting out of park on an incline. Styling improvements include new fascia, and a redesigned grill and hood for that signature Can-Am look. For increased front-end protection, the entire HD10 line gets a strengthened version of the heavy duty XT bumper.

APPLES TO APPLES The HVAC equipped Polaris Ranger XP 1000 Northstar Edition is clearly the closest competitor to the Defender HD10 Limited. With the Defender’s 2020 power increase they’ve actually got the exact same amount of HP and the same 1134 kg. (2500 pound) tow rating. The Polaris Northstar has a 50 lb. heavier payload capacity and an additional inch of both wheel travel and ground clearance over the Defender Limited. While the Ranger edges out the Defender with wheel travel/ ground clearance, the Defender Limited features a 2 inch longer wheelbase and 7 more ft. lbs. of torque. They both have HVAC, but the Defender clearly one upped them with the Auto Climate control and variable compressor.

Comparing MSRP, both machines are almost identical at just over $25K US and $30K Can. The difference here lies in a few convenient features that are standard equipment on the Defender, and will cost you a pretty penny to add to the Polaris. The Defender Limited comes with great sealing doors with electric windows and a three position, pop-out windshield. These are quality features that will be greatly appreciated on the Defender Limited, and will cost you over $1600 to upgrade on the Northstar Ranger. A pre-mounted, real-deal 4500 lb. winch is another feature on the Defender Limited that will cost you about $700 to add to the Northstar Ranger.

WHAT ELSE MAKES A LIMITED Along with its kick-ass cab, and Auto climate HVAC system, the Defender Limited gets a few other included niceties. Really nice cast aluminum wheels that come wrapped in premium 27” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires come to mind, as does the limited edition seats and badging. Up front you will appreciate the look of the L.E.D. signature light brows and notice that a 4500 lb. winch comes preinstalled, wired, and ready to rescue. In the cab you’ll find the easy to use, 7.6” digital display with a keypad. The Defender Limited also gets an 850 watt magneto that’s necessary for the HVAC system, but also leaves plenty on the table for additional lighting and accessories. Ranch headquarters is a privately owned and recently renovated, 11,000 acre piece of the original 566,000 acre historic Y.O. Ranch. The entire ranch is an amazing exotic game and wildlife “preserve”, dedicated to breeding and keeping rare and endangered species alive. The ranch has some of the most amazing animals running wild you will ever see. Being that we were in Texas, you can also hunt just about anything you want for a price. The Y.O. Ranch is home to 60 different species of exotic wildlife including giraffe, zebra, ostrich, emus, onyx, water buffalo, etc. etc. East Texas September temps in the high 90’s, combined with pretty extreme humidity, would typically suck a lot of the fun out of exploring a massive ranch like the Y.O. Typical guests to the Ranch get tours in pickups with raised bed seating, or in jeeps when the temps are up. Not today! We were there to test the latest Defender model with a huge windshield and air conditioning. These showroom stock Defender Limiteds were probably the best machine on the planet to experience this incredible ranch in summer temps. We started off with a guided, yet spirited group ride to learn the lay of the land and the trail system before being turned loose to explore. This first ride was right after an early breakfast, while it was still pretty cool out, but in the dusty conditions, you immediately notice how well the cab is sealed and how effective the filter is. We saw probably ten different types of deer, a handful of African type animals that I couldn’t name, and a few wild hogs on the first loop. Regrouping at the end of the first loop, we were turned loose to experience both the machine and the Ranch. Taking off on our own into this crazy ranch full of African Safari 56

animals seemed like something out of a movie. Getting to do this in an 82 HP UTV, with ten inches of travel and air conditioning seemed more like a dream than reality. On the first loop, out by ourselves, I ran up on a heard of zebras that were pretty tame, and actually let me get pretty close to them in the Defender. The next crazy encounter was with a wildebeest that was not nearly as cooperative, or easy to get close too. Like most people, I had never seen a wildebeest in person, and opted to throttle up and give chase, hoping for a little one on one time with him. While the Defender has plenty of get up and go, the Wildebeest made better line choices and smoked me through the trees. The rest of the press launch was like driving around in a wild safari park, except that we were allowed to smash the trails at 40-50 mph versus poking along on the typically crowded tour bus. For the most part, the trails consisted of fairly smooth access trails, but there was also a handful of cool little climbs and declines

WE STARTED OFF WITH A GUIDED, YET SPIRITED GROUP RIDE TO LEARN THE LAY OF THE LAND AND THE TRAIL SYSTEM BEFORE BEING TURNED LOOSE TO EXPLORE. that would have been nearly impossible in a four wheel drive pickup, or really slow going in a decent jeep. The back part of the property had a rocky creek/ riverbed that was probably impassable in a street legal vehicle, and we could easily pick our way through, without even damaging the undercarriage. Granted, we had a few close calls with a couple of deer at the speeds we were carrying in the fast sections, but they all survived and we couldn’t imagine a better vehicle to truly experience this place.

WHAT DO WE THINK The speeds you can comfortably carry in such a capable UTV like the Defender allow you cover so much more ground than if you were in any other type of vehicle. We were covering an 11 mile loop in 30-45 minutes, depending on the amount of wildlife we stopped to gawk at. The Defender Limited’s automatic climate control HVAC system made this whole experience just that much better. The cab is so comfortable and the scenery was so cool that we would just keep driving, and didn’t even remember that is was extremely hot and humid until stopping for lunch. Walking across the parking lot to the lunchroom was an instant reminder of just how cool this HVAC system really is. Cabin sealing and dust filtration is another place where they killed it with the Defender Limited. We drove around in dry, dusty conditions for a day and a half without even wearing goggles. There is literally no dust that gets in this cab, and the filtration system keeps the air fresh and enjoyable. You can spend an entire day enjoying smashing around on dusty or silty trails, and then head to dinner in the same clothes you’re wearing. This machine is an eye opener, and will open our sport/pastime to so many new types of enthusiasts. Off-Roading this new Defender in such a cool place was a perfect example of what can be done with it. Spending an entire day out in the woods with these incredible animals was an experience I will never forget, and I really want to thank the crew at Can-Am for the invite.

HONDA’S HIGHLY A FOUR SEATERS ARENTICIPATED TALON FINALLY A REALITY

Y

es you read that right! Looking to share their part of the sport side-b y-side market to additi onal family and friends. The same Honda Powersp ort s group that waited nearl y a decade to enter the thr ivin g Sport SxS market has followed suit with two 4-s ea t Talon models in less tha n a year. The four-sea t Honda Talon encompasses the same revolutionary fea tures that allowed the Talon 1000X success in suc h an extremely competitive market. Th e “belt-less” Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), Africa Twin derive d parallel-twin engine, and CRF Dirtbike inspired body lines were more than we ll received on the Talon X, and they’re a direct carry over to the 1000X-4 models. The extremely similar machines actua lly share an 88% commonality rate, yet are graced with two ad ditional seats and the significantly improv ed high-speed, rough ter rain tractability that’s possible with a lon ger wheelbase.

H

onda’s announcement of two different 4-seat Talon models would leave most to assume a 64” wide X model and maybe a longer travel, 68” wide 1000R model like their 2-seat predecessors. The team at Honda had a different plan in mind with the first two Talon 4-seat models to hit the market, both being 64” wide 1000X versions. The new Talon 1000X-4 and Talon 1000X-4 FOX Live Valve both share an impressive 295cm wheelbase that’s over 72mm longer than the 2-seat 1000X. This nearly two and a half feet of extra length creates plenty of room for two back seat passengers, and adds significant improvement to high speed handling, whoops, and any other desert type terrain.

THE BACKSEAT In typical Honda fashion, attention to detail and downright quality shines through in the Talon 1000X-4’s cabin design/layout. The two Talons feature stadium style rear seating with the back seats sitting 75mm higher and 50mm closer together than the fronts for improved visibility, roost minimization, and a more engaged overall experience. The Honda team was also proud to point out the amount of additional engineering and effort spent integrating the rear passengers into the riding experience. Larger occupants or even smaller riders with bulky winter gear will truly appreciate the considerations to ingress/egress like the extra wide opening that is free of sharp edges and protrusions that could snag clothing.

STADIUM STYLE SEATING WITH THE REAR SEATS HIGHER AND CLOSER TOGETHER GIVES THE BACK SEAT PASSENGERS BETTER VISIBILITY AND A MORE INCLUDED FEEL.

The rear of the Talon 4 gets the same high quality sport seats, with two-tone weatherproof material and good drainage. They feature dense but comfortable foam, and just the right amount of bolstering. All four seats come with automotive quality three-point belts, but come ready to install four-point restraints. The backs of the front seats are sloped to provide best in class legroom and knee space. Rear passenger drink holders are placed comfortably within reach, even when seat belted, and you also get your own 12v accessory power socket. A full-length rear grab bar includes guards to prevent fingers and hands from getting pinched by the back of the front seat.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND DOWNRIGHT QUALITY SHINES THROUGH IN THE TALON 1000X-4 CABIN DESIGN

THE 1000X-4’S FRONT SEAT FEATURES MULTIPLE FOOT REST AREAS FOR A PLANTED AND COMFORTABLE FEEL IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.

HONDA ENGINEERS DESIGNED THE BACK DOORS WITH SMOOTH BODY WORK THAT WON’T SNAG CLOTHING WHILE ENTERING THE VEHICLE.

CHASSIS & FRAME Just like the two seat Talons, the Talon 4-seat models get a one piece frame that’s been developed with the technology, experience and knowhow of Honda’s automotive division. Even at 73mm longer than the 2-seater, it still provides optimum rigidity characteristics. This desired stiffness and compliance level ensures consistent geometry including camber, caster, and wheel toe alignment for a consistent precision driving experience. The Talon’s cage or “Occupant Protection Structure” is constructed of high quality, large-diameter tubing and meets ROHVA’s rollover protection standard. Independent front and rear suspension provides stellar ground clearance and quality wheel travel. Just like the 2-seat Talon 1000X, the 1000X-4’s dual a-arm front suspension provides 37cm (14.6”) of travel, while Honda’s 3-link trailing arm rear suspension provides superior handling with a respectable 51cm (15”s) of travel. The Talon 1000X-4s 32cm (12.8”) of ground clearance is impressive in its own right, but even more so considering it comes equipped with only 28” tall tires.

BOTH FRONT AND REAR TALON DOORS OPEN PAST 90 DEGREES FOR AS MUCH EGRESS SPACE AS POSSIBLE.

FOX LIVE VALVE SUSPENSION As we mentioned earlier, the two new 4-seat Talons are both 64” wide versions of the 1000X chassis. The slightly lower price point 1000X-4 model comes with Fox Podium shocks with the QS3 quick adjuster system. 2.0 shocks handle the damping up front, and the rear gets the larger 2.5’s. The QS3 adjustors are an intuitive, user friendly option with three distinct settings to tune your suspension to the terrain or driving style. The Talon 1000X-4 FOX Live Valve is a completely different animal with computer controlled, 2.5” Live Valve shocks on every corner. Similar to what we’ve seen or experienced with the Dynamic model Polaris RZR XP, the FOX system adjusts compression damping on each shock independently, automatically, and up to 200 times per second. The constantly monitoring, reacting, and adjusting live valve system creates less body roll, a smoother ride,

and unbeatable bottoming resistance. The Talon 1000X-4 and Live Valve version are pretty much identically equipped with exception of the active suspension set up. It does however, get an orange color-matched frame, bumper and ROPS cage for a little more premium look. It also gets LAUNCH MODE!

LAUNCH MODE The Talon 1000X-4 FOX Live Valve model is the only SxS to date with both an automatic tranny and a launch mode. Like a Magic Button for good starts, you’ll have no more excuses for getting beat off the line. Hold down the brake, press the Launch Mode switch, hold both paddle shifters back, floor the gas pedal and release the paddles. The DCT automatically shifts up for you through all the gears, as effectively as you ever could on your own. Honda’s Launch mode even has a special yaw control to keep your ultra-aggressive launches straight and true.

100% TALON As we mentioned, the Talon 1000X-4 shares an 88% commonality with the well received 2-seat Talon 1000X, and is quickly proving itself. What this means is that you’re getting all the Talon features like the Automatic DCT transmission that you can drive in paddle shift manual mode or fully automatic with a new optional Sport mode for higher RPM shifts and a more spirited, performance driving experience. You’re also still getting I-4WD with the industry’s first brake-traction control system for a side by side. These advanced technologies are sourced directly from Honda’s automotive division, and otherwise previously unheard of in the powersports world.

IT’S A HONDA Brand loyalty to the Honda name and its solid reputation had multitudes of off-road enthusiasts awaiting the Talon’s original release. While it seemed like they might be dragging their feet and potentially missing the boat on potential sales, the fact of the matter is that Honda spends more time on R&D than one could ever imagine. Their solid reputation for reliability, durability and quality products is a true testament to this. Oversights, under-built components, and recalls have been a non-issue with Honda since the beginning. From the CT70 & 90 trail bikes of the 60’s, to the ATCs and ATVs of the 80’s, 90’s, and now. If it’s from Big Red, you can trust that it will likely outlast the competition. This reputation started with their Japanese manufacturing, and is proudly carried over to their Timmonsville, South Carolina plant, where the Talon is built for the American market. 66

HONDA SPENDS MORE TIME ON R&D THAN ONE COULD EVER IMAGINE

THE RIDE The Talon 1000X-4 was built to bring the ultimate Side by Side experience to a larger, broader audience, the additional two seats are the ultimate answer to truly sharing this experience with the kids, friends, family, etc. This sharing of the adventure with family or friends was the major focus of the 4-seat Talon press launch. When the invite came, the Honda marketing team not only offered, but recommended that we bring along additional family or friends. The intro was held just outside Caliente, NV, where we all camped together in motorhomes in the Chief Mountain West ORV area. We would be riding the history-rich Silver State Trail system including quite a few miles of the BITD Silver State 300 course. Along with a great variety of terrain, there are also multiple active and inactive ghost “mining” towns to explore, and an incredible view of the highly classified U.S. Air Force facility known as Area 51. Our ride time was broken up into two different 40 mile organized trail rides. One before lunch and another in the afternoon. Being a long time desert racer and offroad racing enthusiast, I was completely stoked to find out that our guide was none other than Multi-Time Baja 1000/500 winner, BITD Champion, and Dakar finisher Scott Harden. A true Icon in our industry, Scott is a living legend on a motorcycle, and he knows the Nevada desert and its history incredibly well. Sharing the driving and riding duties would be my wife and our good friend Wes Miller, who was fresh off an Overall UTV win at the recent SCORE Baja 400. We were all excited to get some drive time in, and having three of us meant everyone could cycle through the back seat for an opinion. At 5’-11”, I fit pretty well into the back seat of just about any 4-seat UTV. Wes, on the other hand is a little over 6’3”, and is usually pretty well crammed in the

back seat of anyVIEW OF THE thing. This was not the case with the HIGHLY Talon’s backseats; CLASSIFIED they are “all day” comfortable, and U.S. AIR FORCE there were really FACILITY KNOWN no complaints from any of us. AS AREA 51 Honda clearly did their homework on the back seat design, as the ride back there was really just as fun and inclusive as being up front. Vision is good, the seats are comfortable, and your knees have plenty of room. We also didn’t find any oddball inner door areas that might wear on your knees or elbows. The rear door latches are as quality, and as easy to operate as the fronts. We also didn’t, nor did we witness anyone having issues with them staying shut, like we’ve experienced with some other first model year 4-seat UTVs. While the backseat is really great and will be an awesome spot for friends and family to experience true off-road adventure, extra seating is not the only reason one might opt for a 4-seater. The extra wheelbase that comes with a 4-seat model is absolutely key to high speed handling characteristics. They track better and are more predictable at high speeds, get through the whoops better, and just generally help to smooth out the terrain/feedback to the driver. This is the main reason why the 4-seat chassis is the preferred starting point for nearly every desert racer build in BITD and SCORE. One other big advantage is the additional space allotted for the rear seats that can be used for fuel cells and extra storage. The four-seat Talon might be a handful in extremely tight woods, but its overall handling will more than make up for the moderately increased turning radius. The FOX QS3 equipped model was extremely fun to drive and right at home on the faster, desert type course. With three of us in the car, the middle shock setting was good when pushed, but full soft still exhibited a smoother, more enjoyable ride.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 5

67

atvworld atvworldmag.com

FOX LIVE VALVE HANDLING Absolutely not knocking the entry level QS3 equipped model’s handling, but the FOX live valve equipped machine is on another level. The Live Valve system provides super plush, soft settings at slower cruising speeds, and automatically knows when to add compression before impact at higher speeds. Stability is also greatly improved with nearly eliminated body roll, front end push, and diving under hard braking. You can opt between sport

THE TALON’ SUSPENSION PROVIDES PLENTY OF GROUND CLEARANCE AND QUALITY UNDER CHASSIS PROTECTION

68

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 5

or normal settings with a dash mounted switch - we preferred the sport mode, but both options will out-handle the QS3 in most any situation. Out in the desert, the Launch mode seemed a little gimmicky, but fun nonetheless. On a starting gate, or dragging your buddies at the dunes will be another story. It truly gets you off the line brainlessly, and faster than you could ever pull off on your own.

THE FOX LIVE VALVE EQUIPPED MACHINE IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL

FINAL THOUGHTS The four-seat Talon is going to be a winner without a doubt. All three of us were more than impressed with the apparent overall quality and handling characteristics. We all also agreed that we would spend the extra two-grand for the Live Valve equipped model. Even though it’s a substantial amount of money, the handling and other improvements are well worth it. The one exception might be when building a race car, where shocks might get scrapped anyways, and looking for a lower entry price point. At 104 hp, the Talon 1000X-4 tops out at about 68 mph, but we know the dealer financeable, bolt-on Turbo Kit from Jackson Racing can get you right up to 170 hp. At $6000, that can be tied into your Talon loan, so this is another option that we’d have a hard time passing up. We’re excited to get our loaner, and see if we can do the install.

FAMOUS NAME Very suiting, Charles named this type of A.I. for an ATV “KITT”. The KITT ATV is an artificial intelligence module which is combined with a hybrid powersports vehicle. The thought behind this type of A.I. system is that every time you ride, it would notice your driving behavior and preferences to adapt the vehicle to your riding style.

DESIGN KITT would feature a big screen digital display, with easy views from the driver seat that are similar to what the automotive industry has done with a large, interactive touch screen. Just like the digital screens in your automobile, the driver could change the look, display and information settings to suit their needs best. 72

NO TALK BACK Charles did not include the idea of your ATV talking back to you like Michael Knight’s Trans AM did, and we thank him for this. The talking car was great in the 1980s, but is a little corny, and possibly a little scary THE A.I. WOULD in an iRobot type of voice and FOCUS ON THE thought process.

SAFER DRIVING

ATV’S EQUILIBRIUM TO AVOID HIGH SIDING, TIPPING OVER, OR LOSING STEERING TRACTION IN CORNERS

Too many off-road enthusiasts show-off and perform many different stunts. This A.I. would be capable of assisting the driver to perform stunts safely at the touch of a button. The KITT ATV would feature a special set of handlebars with a different bend than traditional bars, allowing the driver to negotiate curves better and at a faster rate of speed. The A.I. would focus on the ATV’s equilibrium to avoid high siding, tipping over, or losing steering traction in corners. This will allow the rider’s focus to be solely on steering the vehicle around the corner at a faster speed with this artificial intelligence. The precise electric powertrain would also give the driver options of pulling the front wheels/tracks up, possibly over whoops, trail debris, trees, etc.

WHAT MOOD ARE YOU IN? Being developed from the sci-fi field, KITT’s bioluminescent colouration is akin to a TRON light cycle, and could adapt to the driver’s mood or signature. The vehicle itself could also be modified with four tracks or four tires, or two tracks and one tire, etc., all dependant on the driving application.

IT'S IN THE CLOUD KITT would use machine learning software that would be embedded in its onboard control module, and would be con-

nected to a cloud-based system, allowing this personal A.I. to be able to follow its owner between different vehicles such as other ATVs, Side-by-Sides, snowmobiles, automobiles, motorcycles, etc. As the A.I. adapted and learned more of the characteristics of the driver‘s behaviour and mapped out the driver’s style, reactions and preferences, it would interact more and provide recommendations based on the driver’s goals. This is important, as no two drivers are identical. Many would like hard acceleration and fast cornering while some desire less aggressive breaking, and slower speeds, etc., so it would understand the individual’s emotions.

MORE VEHICLE INTELLEGENCE Other A.I. positives are that KITT could continually be doing software checks and running vehicle diagnostics to maintain the vehicle’s service needs. Safety features would be that KITT would be able to diagnose the driver’s well-being, detecting fatigue or impaired driving. If KITT detected any abnormalities with the driver, it could take over immediately. Most importantly, it could alert emergency services if a medical emergency or crash arises. If KITT was still driveable and the situation called for it, and the driver was incoherent, it could drive to the nearest hospital.

GAME CHANGER The Kitt A.I. system is a feature that could change the powersport market forever, because it would take the industry a step beyond the autonomous systems that are in development today. This type of technology would reduce driver stress, prevent HIS TYPE OF accidents, and improve TECHNOLOGY the fun factor for many powersport riders. The WOULD REDUCE modular powertrain DRIVER STRESS, and steering system would enhance and PREVENT complement the drivACCIDENTS, AND ing experience. These features would need to IMPROVE THE FUN be engineered and deFACTOR FOR MANY signed based on market pull. Is there interest for POWERSPORT pushing the boundaries RIDERS. of technology this far? In 2008 Bombardier founded a private Research and Development Center and developed electric urban transporters and electric ATV prototypes. With a passion for innovation, Charles is deeply involved within the design community and acts as an expert and a consultant to support inventors, companies and basically anyone interested in new applications for mechanical engineering. His website www.charlesbombardier.com promotes open innovation and along with a team of designers they are constantly dreaming, innovating, and creating new concepts and publishing them for all to see. As Charles puts it, “Our mission is to inspire kids, students, inventors and tinkerers to improve existing modes of transportation and imagine what the future holds for us. We share our concepts with the world so they can grow faster, evolve and become a reality one day.”

e’re enjoying the fall weather, but winter is on its way, and it’s come time to start the search for a new vehicle to tow around the machines. For some, this can be a daunting task, trying to navigate all the categories and options available, not only in the light truck segments, but also in the SUV lines, can be about as fun a digging your brain out with a dull spoon. elying on dealership sales staff may only get you so far, but the staff should understand what you need in a wintertime tow vehicle. Without being prepared by knowing your numbers before you hit the lots, it’s is a sure way to drive home in something that drives well, but may not check all of your boxes. Looking across brands and vehicle segments, there is an endless amount of new features and options that are geared towards recreational towing. Features like integrated brake controllers, backup cameras that take into account your trailer, even intelligent reversing systems that can backup your trailer for you, can be handy features, but can also distract you from making the best buying decisions. Many of these features may or may not fit within your budget, as many seem to be only available within luxury groups. However, these things shouldn’t matter 78

when it comes down to making your core vehicle choice. Without sounding like I’m stating the obvious with another Tow Vehicle article, I wanted to hopefully give you some sound advice based on my trailer towing experience, with all types of vehicles in all types of weather. I’ve been lucky enough to tow practically everything from single axle utility trailers behind small SUVs, all the way up to 53’ transport trailers behind semi trucks. I’m not a professional driver, making my living OTR, but I do have a decent amount of experience, and I’m an avid ATV enthusiast, so I hope I can in some way can give you some advice in choosing the right tow vehicle. Or at least one capable of doing the job. To keep things simple, you need to know three things; the total weight of the tow vehicle and its load, the total weight of the trailer and its load, and the maximum combination (truck and trailer) weight

limit of the tow vehicle as specified by the manufacturer. When out shopping, its easy to get bogged down in Maximum Payloads, Maximum Towing Numbers, Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings, and Gross Combination Weight Ratings. Not to mention how these numbers can change between sub models within a vehicle family. Compound all these numbers with a sales agent itching to move a stale vehicle off the lot, and it would be easy to find yourself in the wrong vehicle platform. Getting started, you have to know the weight numbers of what you are going to carry. Beginning with the trailer you already have, or one you may be buying, take a look at VIN plate that’s usually located somewhere around the front left side of the unit. It should give you a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). This number is the maximum weight capacity the of the trailer that includes the weight of the trailer

atvworld atvworldmag.com

I’M NOT SUGGESTING HERE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD CLASS UP TO 1 TON DUAL WHEEL PICKUPS TO TOW 2-PLACE ENCLOSED TRAILERS. AND the load. I would suggest making the assumption that the trailer is always fully loaded, and use that number when calculating the combination weight for the truck and trailer. Figuring out the total load on the tow vehicle is a little more difficult than the trailer. Setting up a bit of a load list of everything loaded into or onto your tow vehicle can be a good place to start. Stuff on the list

should include all the potential passengers; all your overnight baggage and riding gear; spare fuel/oil; tools; miscellaneous load items; any special equipment like generators; the tongue weight of the trailer; and/or if you are in the pick-up truck market and plan on loading an extra ATV in the box of a truck or install a truck deck. Some of these items like extra fuel or baggage may be carried in the trailer, and you can adjust your list accordingly. In addition to payload, you also need to know what the vehicle weighs all on its own. This is sometimes referred to a curb weight and can change wildly with vehicle options and layouts. Adding everything up, making sure neither the tow vehicle nor the trailer are overloaded, should give you the total weight of your combination going down the road. This, in my opinion is the most important number to know, and it shouldn’t exceed the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of your tow vehicle. Now… here is where trailering experience kicks in. Even if your loaded numbers don’t exceed the GCWR, I believe you don’t want to be pushing

their limits either. Trailering/towing at the maximum ratings is a sure way to induce a drive experience that will exercise your butt muscles. Add in bad weather and the fact that when we have our ATV’s loaded up, we are often in for long road trips into more remote areas and roads, there is just no margin for error. I wish I could give you a numerical value to put a percentage on how much you want the GCWR to exceed your load, but I can’t. Even here, variables like how often you tow, distance you expect to go, and the speed at which you like to travel come into effect. If you only plan on only one road trip a year, getting close to the maximums may be acceptable. However, if you are like me and expect to spend a good portion of the time driving with a trailer hooked up, a little more capacity can make time at the wheel a lot less stressful. I’m not suggesting here that everyone should class up to 1 ton dual wheel pickups to tow 2-place enclosed trailers. But, if you find yourself right at the top of capabilities of the ½ ton pickup class, maybe option-out of the heated steering wheel package to free up enough budget to bring home a ¾ ton truck. In the long run you will be happy you did. Going into the dealership knowing your weights, and how much time you expect to spend trailering will ensure you choose the correct class of vehicle that’s right for you. From that point, you can start thinking about option packages and luxury trailering features. My Dad always used the saying, “The tail doesn’t wag the dog”. Choosing the right tow vehicle will make sure that doesn’t happen.

KLEINN ON-BOARD AIR COMPRESSOR

SYSTEMS FOR POLARIS AND CAN-AM

A flat tire on a Jeep or off-road truck isn’t the end of the world since most people carry a spare with them. That’s not so easy on a 2014-19 Polaris RZR or 201719 Can-Am Maverick X3 UTV with little to no cargo capacity. However, there is plenty of room on your rig for a Kleinn On-Board Air Compressor System. The systems are based on Kleinn’s 150 PSI waterproof air compressor and one gallon air tank that can easily reseat and inflate your tires. In fact, that compressor is powerful enough to inflate UTV and truck tires up to 37 inches in diameter. The Kleinn On-Board Air Compressor Systems come with mounting brackets that make installation a bolt-on affair with no drilling, welding, or cutting required. They come with a quick-connect tire inflator, locking air chuck, hardware, airline, and wiring. Head over to www.summitracing.com
