22 YEARS OF POWERSPORTS HELPING THOSE WITH BREAST CANCER

KELLY SHIRES BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION - THE FUTURE OF FUNDRAISING

January 2020 we all celebrated the new year and a start to a new millennium, excited to see what the year had in store for us. We can say with much certainty that 2020 has had the most unpredictable start to a new year than many of us have ever experienced in our lifetimes with the introduction of Covid19. It has become the year of isolation, social distancing and wearing masks. As we navigate through these unprecedented times, we have all faced many challenges which extend into all of everyday life. These times are extremely challenging for charities and fundraising events as we steer our way through thoughts of hosting virtual events to hosting smaller scale fundraisers where possible with the ability to keep everyone healthy and safe. Unfortunately, earlier this year we had to cancel our spring and fall fundraising events for 2020 including the TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV event and the Fore the Love of Pink Golf Tournament. We were fortunate to be able to host our 21st annual Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run in the beginning of February, which was as epic as ever.

So many people are questioning if the future of fundraising events are a possibility and we are sure for the foreseeable future that things may look a little different. With that said, we are extremely hopeful that we will be able to host our usual events however they may look, feel and have a different vibe until things get back to being more stable. In saying that WE NEED YOUR HELP more than every right now. Our team is actively working on ideas, solutions and the possibilities of hosting physical and virtual events both simultaneously and independent of each other and within government, health and safety guidelines. We want to ensure the success of the charity as well as the fun in our events while keeping everyone’s health and safety as a top priority. What does that mean? Without a crystal ball to tell us what the future will hold we are hopeful that our winter and spring events will be a reality that we can all enjoy. As we get closer to our events and keeping on top of regulations, we will be releasing more information about how these events will be possible and how you will be able to participate.

Right now more than ever we all are craving a sense of normalcy, so for a moment here, let’s pretend we are not living in these Covid filled times and take a look at what our most coveted event looks like, below is a throw back to what our typical event looks like and hopefully what we will be able to see again in the near future!

Reflecting on the past, it is hard to believe that it has been over 22 years since that the concept for the annual Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run was born. A passion for powersports and a mission to help those diagnosed with breast cancer have been the driving forces behind the charity and its amazing group of volunteers. It’s even harder to believe it has been 16 years since Kelly Shires lost her battle with the disease, she is greatly missed. In acknowledging that, it is also amazing to recognize that some amazing things have happened over the past 22 years; an all women snowmobiling event, an ATV ride aimed at both male and female riders, to also hosting an annual golf tournament Fore the Love of Pink however we have paused our Motorcycle Sun Run Our ATV, golf and motorcycle events are open to male and female participants. When we lost Kelly Shires in October 2004, it really hit our group hard but it forced us to be strong and regroup in order to forge forward and keep Kelly’s dream and legacy alive. Kelly Shires had the dream of helping provide financial aid across Canada to those affected by the disease has been made possible by those who support our events and by the most amazing Corporate Sponsors who whole heartedly stand behind the cause.

Our 22nd Annual Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run held the weekend of February 5-7, 2021, we plan to paint those Muskoka trails pink for this exciting event, “Home of the Snow Run” at Hidden Valley Resort in Huntsville. Participants have the choice of 5 teams (or levels) to ride on. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $1250 in pledges to attend, this essentially helps one breast cancer patient! A few years ago, we introduced a Bring-a-friend option where we asked past participants to bring someone who never attended in the past, to encourage this we ask that the returning participant raise $1000 and the new friend $500. Here is what a past Snow Run looked like:

The event kicks off on the Friday afternoon allowing ladies the time to get themselves settled in at the resort, meet the registration team while picking up their fundraising incentive gifts complete with a fabulous goody bag and shop at the pink market. Early evening the Friday night Meet’n’Greet really kick starts the festivities and is hosted by Carey Moran Pure Country FM. The following morning after enjoying a wonderful buffet breakfast, they choose which team to ride with based on their riding ability. While everyone is enjoying the morning and preparing for the amazing ride, a secret panel of judges are covertly making notes and taking pictures of the snowmobiles which have been decorated for the decorated sled contest. After lunch, the teams arrive back at

Hidden Valley Resort where they are treated to hot chocolate and treats before they hit the showers and get ready for the evening ahead. The festivities kick off in the evening with cocktails, a scrumptious plated dinner, speeches, awards and an amazing silent auction. Again, this year with restrictions and safety we are working on re-inventing the wheel for the banquet. Sunday morning participants are treated to a buffet breakfast before they leave for their journey home, full of new memories and with the knowledge that they have made a difference in the life of someone battling breast cancer. It is a feeling that words cannot fully capture.
