Best advice - Don’t sink!... And don’t be at the front of the line!
few weeks ago a group of us from the office hit the trails to take part in the, ‘Do It for Dads Rally’, Prostate Extreme Team, on the Park-to-Park Trail Association trail system. The event was sponsored by CF Moto and we were thrilled to be a part of it. Anytime we can hit the trails in support of an important cause is awesome. And to have the ride on the Park-to-Park trails, makes for an amazing day. A portion of the Park-to-Park trail’s system is called the Seguin Trial. It’s really one of the best trails available. It throws everything at you, whooped out sec-
tions, inclines, declines, high and slow speed sections, rocky sections and if you are looking for mud and water - it has that too. At some point you may come across deeper water holes and depending on which path you choose to cross, the mud can get a little thick. Needless to say, I found one of those little too deep and muddy sections. When I drove up to the muddy spots, there were tracks that led me to believe that an ATV had just driven through it. Must be good to go through then right?... Not always the case. Leading up to this particular section, I should have known
something was up, as all of the Side-bySides and ATVs started to bunch up and some of the other riders were letting others go ahead of them and some stopping for breaks. I should have paid attention to these clues, and I should have realized that there was a small bypass trail to the left. As the “main trail” which I decided was a good decision to take since it was clearly the wider more used trail, would turn out to be a bad decision. After easing in to the first four feet it seemed to be good, it was five through 20 feet that I noticed a potential problem. Luckily I stopped, it was only getting worse. When I turned around, I found 15 ATVs and Side-by-Sides now at my point of entry, all looking to me for the thumbs up or thumbs down. The whole scene reminding me of an MMA fight with onlookers everywhere, a tag team of my Scrambler and me in the ring vs. the mud and water. Clearly I lost to the Hazard. And as Matt and Cody were quick to get the winch cable to me, Matt who rides the Seguin Trail often let me know that he had never witnessed anything getting through something like this, including Mud Pros, X MR or even customs. With the help of Matt and Cody I was out and back on the trail within five minutes. If you think you have what it takes, plan your trip and send us your photos or video. Visit www.parktoparktrail.org to get there and next year plan to attend to the ‘Do it for Dads Rally’, Prostate Extreme Team ride in Parry Sound, Ontario, it’s for a great cause. Until next time, I’ll be paying more attention to the trailside clues, and looking forward to a great summer! Rich

ONTARIO INCREASING ON-ROAD ACCESS FOR OFF-ROAD AND ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES
Ontario is enhancing on-road access for more types of off-road vehicles (ORVs) and allterrain vehicles, (ATVs) while increasing safety requirements for riders. Beginning July 1, 2015, the province is implementing the following changes to ensure that ORV and ATV riders safely reach their destination: More types of ORVs and ATVs, including two-up ATVs, side-by-side ATVs and utilityterrain vehicles, (UTVs) will be allowed to use the shoulder of public roads. All riders, including drivers and passengers of all ages will have to wear a helmet and use a seatbelt or foot rests, where applicable This month, the province is promoting the new rules before they come into force July 1st, 2015, to ensure that municipalities have enough time to make necessary by-law amendments, and to remind riders and drivers about the change. The province is also allowing an education period to take place between July 1 to Sept. 1, 2015, before violation tickets are issued. However, during this time police officers may still lay a charge through a summons. Ontario is home to thousands of kilometres of recreational trails, making it a popular destination for riders from across Canada and the world. The province consulted with a wide array of trail, municipal, industry and enforcement, as well as health and safety stakeholders to ensure the rules strike the right balance. Enhancing Ontario’s tourism and recreational opportunities is part of the government’s plan for Ontario. The four-part plan includes investing in people’s talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan. www.atvworldmag.com

SOMETIMES THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB IS A WOMAN
You
may recall in Issue 11.5, (a couple of issues ago) the City of North Bay was deliberating whether or not to allow ATVs access on some city roadways. Well, the city has finally decided to permit ATV riders access to certain streets in North Bay. This was the missing link to the surrounding communities, who have allowed ATV access to their municipal roadways for some time now. City politicians gave staff the green light Monday, April 27th, 2015 to prepare a bylaw for council’s consideration, permitting restricted access to specific streets, with the intent to allow ATVs to reach trails and local businesses such as hotels, restaurants and gas bars.
24
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 2
There was a recommendation that the initial bylaw be created to allow for restricted ATV access to certain streets for a trial period, only to determine the economic impact and monitor any added roadway maintenance costs, and potential increased safety risk and liability. This resulted in a councillor tabling an amendment, calling for a bylaw to be drafted without the requirement of a trial period, suggesting most other Northern communities already allow restricted ATV access. This was supported by other councillors in attendance, so now we are just waiting for the bylaw to be approved, and North Bay ATV access will be a dream no longer. Next dream…….snowmobile access. As a father of both a son and daughter, I have always felt that there was no distinction between what my son could do and what my daughter could do while they were growing up, or even now for that matter. If there was an interest by either one, my wife and I fanned it, and as I am sure with most other parents, supported any and all of our children’s endeavours. Some good, some not so good, but that’s life right? As a professor in the Motive Power Department of Canadore College, I am always encouraged when I see young ladies taking a program in a profession that has been generally dominated by male students. It is great to see this becoming more and more the norm in all trades, specifically over the past decade. Now this should not be a surprise to anyone. During World War II, it was the women that built the equipment (tanks, planes, trucks, etc.) and ammunition that helped win the war for the Allies. Women constantly flew aircraft to Europe to supply all the Air Forces with replacement planes, then after the war, things seemed to revert back to the expected rolls of a man and a woman. Not sure why, but hopefully we have learned from the past and continue to move forward. This year, I have the privilege of having three young ladies in my post-secondary program, and each have a great outlook and will be a force to be reckoned with in the industry. When asked why they chose this profession, these were their comments.
atvworld atvworldmag.com
Katelynn:
“I have a passion for vehicles. I came into this course with the knowledge that I gained through high school and at home. I am enjoying this type of learning process and I am gaining the experience and confidence that should propel me into an apprenticeship upon graduation. Every day is something different and I enjoy the challenge.”
SABRINA: “I wasn’t sure at first about this profession, but my Dad is an Automotive Technician and I have helped him on occasion. I know that someday I want to have a vehicle that I have customized with my design concept. It is great to understand how all of the parts and components work together not only safely but efficiently and also how we can change things to make them work better.”
BEE: I have never let being a female get in the way of me doing what I love. Working with my Dad for the last seven years, I have grown a strong passion for anything with an engine and four wheels. I strive to do my best in this field and work as hard as I can. Being a female in this trade can be a little bit difficult at times, but my motivation and passion get me through. I chose a motive power technician program at a college to expand my knowledge and to help me secure a job as an apprentice to become qualified as a licensed Technician. I have absolutely no regrets choosing this program at Canadore College.”
All three of these amazing ladies encourage other young ladies to focus on what you want to do, not the reasons why you shouldn’t or can’t do something. I have the good fortune to be the grandfather to an amazing four and a half year old granddaughter, who loves to do ballet at dance class on Saturday morning and then get muddy on her four wheeler in the afternoon. She constantly reminds me of “why can’t we do that granddad”, which has reinforced my resolve greatly, because it seem to be more will than reason when we achieve our goals. In closing, I would like to mention a quote on an old beat up “No Fear” MX tee shirt, that somehow over the years, has avoided being thrown out by my wife. It has a picture of (who I believe is) Ryan Hughes flying high on a Suzuki RM 250. “Chase Your Dreams and the Rest Will Follow”. Words to live by. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 2

TRICKY PART
5
This is one of the trickest parts we’ve seen on any race quad. This trick, adjustable lever and master cylinder pushes forward with your left hand to operate the rear brake. This is especially useful when hanging over the left hand side of the quad, for a turn where you can’t reach the rear pedal.
CONTROLLING YOUR WEIGHT
7
Zac’s adjustable sway bar uses carbon tie rods and aluminum heim joints to keep the front end in control, with almost zero weight.

If that doesn’t scream money, I don’t know what does. For the right price, Lone Star Racing will make you a complete front end out of titanium. This one adds four inches to the front end, and still shaves a handful of pounds.
REUSEABLE FILTER
8
K&N’s new replacement filter and pre-charger for the RZR XP1000 will keep dirt and silt out just like the stock filter, but when it’s dirty, you can just clean and oil it instead of having to replace the paper stock filter. www.atvworldmag.com
HOW TO
FILL IT UP
WITH ATV WORLD MAGAZINE
BY NICK NELSON
FINDING AND FIXING THAT EVER ANNOYING SLOW LEAK
f
lat tires are pretty much an unavoidable part of Off-Roading. An inexpensive tire plug kit can quickly and easily fix most punctures. You just need to locate the puncture and properly install a plug or two, if it happens to bigger hole. Sometimes locating the hole is not as simple as it sounds. A slow leak can be a real pain, especially one that leaves you firing up the compressor every time you want to go for a ride. Most leaks are easy to identify, but sometimes you will need to dig a little deeper to find the problem. We would like to show you how to find that pesky hole and fix it, once and for all.
1
Our XP 1000 has been going flat about once a week for the past two months. The leak is apparently pretty small and been difficult to locate. The first step is to fill up the flat tire. We like to over inflate it a little, to try and make the leak a little more noticeable.
2
SPRAY IT
With the tire slightly over-inflated, start by spraying the tire with a concoction of dish soap and water. A couple capfuls of dish soap mixed with water in a spray bottle is ideal. You will need to thoroughly cover the tire and valve stem area, while looking for air bubbles to start forming.
3 TAKE IT OFF
Sometimes, as in our case, the hole is really small or hard to locate. If this is the issue, you will need to safely jack the vehicle up and remove the tire/ wheel. Sometimes it helps to put your ear close to the tire and listen for any bubbling.
SOAP TIME!
4
With the wheel removed, you can try soaping the bead on both inside and out, to make sure your leak is not coming from the bead area. Often times, if a low or flat tire has been driven on, you will get sand, rocks or dirt in the bead, and that can cause a leak.

TIME FOR A BATH
5
If you can’t find the leak with the soap bottle, you are going to need a large tub of water. A half-barrel, kiddie pool, or watering trough will work well. Submerge a section of the tire up to the wheel level. Inspect for bubbling and then slowly rotate the tire within the trough until you locate the leak.
LOCK AND LOADED
7
Load the plug strip into the installer tool. Sometimes you will have to twist it a little to get it in the tool. If you’re dealing with a big hole, you can sometime use two plugs at a time. Lubricate the plug with rubber cement, or glue.
MORE PLUGS?
34
9
If you were dealing with a large hole, you might need to repeat the process with additional plugs. Refill the tire to the recommended air pressure, and then trim off the excess plug material with sharp clippers or a razor blade. You want to leave ¼ to ½ inch of material on the outside of the tire. Double check your repair by spraying the soapy water directly on the installed plug area. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 2
GET YOUR CRAYONS
6
Mark your leak with a crayon or some type of marker that writes on rubber. Remove any foreign objects like a thorn, nail, splinter and then ream out the hole with the reaming tool. If the hole is really miniscule, this can take some work, as the tool will not want to enter the tire without a little force. Leave the reamer sealing hole while you load the plug.
PULL AND PUSH
8
Pull the reamer out of tire and push the plug into the hole. Do not push plug entirely into the hole; stop while there is still plug material on the outside. Turn the tool 90 degrees and slowly remove it from tire, leaving the plug in the tire. You might have to use your fingers to help hold the plug in place while removing tool.
GET IT ON!
10
Reinstall the wheel onto your UTV or ATV. Torque the wheel studs to the correct torque and lower the machine off of the jack. You should now be ready to ride, without having to find air every time you get the itch.

2016 HONDA PIONEER 1000 & 1000-5
RED LEAPS INTO THE OPEN CLASS SXS MARKET WITH BOTH FEET
H
onda brings two brand new, 1000cc, full size side by sides to its 2016 lineup. As the first Japanese big bore UTVs to hit the market, the Pioneer 1000 and Pioneer 1000-5 will hit the ground with both class-leading displacement and payload. Even more impressive is Honda’s 6-speed fully automatic Dual Clutch Transmission, (DCT) that completely eliminates the problematic belts that plague other big HP side by sides. Honda’s flagship Pioneer 1000 promises to raise the bar in terms of power, performance, and capability for both work and recreation applications.

BIG RED
2016 HONDA PIONEER 1000 & 1000-5
The all-new Honda Pioneer 1000 and 1000-5 both feature a purpose built, inline twin, 999cc power plant. The high performance and proven Unicam technology engine is said to mate perfectly with the industry’s only fully automatic, mechanical transmission for incredibly smooth power delivery. This 6-speed DCT transmission is said to bring true engine braking, seamless shifting, and a smooth, reliable transfer of power to the ground. Its beltless design uses super durable steel gears instead of the typical clutch belts, known for breaking and leaving you stranded on the trail. Looking to lead the full-size multi-purpose market, the new Pioneer 1000’s feature a completely new chassis to accommodate the new, big-bore power-plant. Available in four different configurations, the three person, base model Pioneer 1000 is also available as an EPS model, featuring a handful of other upgrades. The 1000-5 adds a full-size convertible bed with Honda’s QuickFlip seating and auto-leveling rear suspension. If you’re not familiar with the QuickFlip seating on the 700 model, it offers a two person bench seat that flips forward into the bed, offering full use of the full size bed. It is truly the best of both worlds as you can keep the shorter, more manageable wheelbase, but still have options for full size dump bed and extra passengers when necessary. The Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe caps off the model offerings with 14 inch aluminum wheels, radial tires, LED headlights and electric power steering. All Pioneer 1000’s come equipped with four-wheel drive, a high-low sub transmission, and 4-mode differential lock. The sub transmission offers a full 42% gear reduction between high/low, and this helps deliver every bit of usable power, giving you the traction you need, when you need it. The open or locked front and rear differentials will keep the Pioneer from tearing up delicate fields or other surfaces, yet can also get you out of the nastiest of conditions when needed. One easily accessible lever gives the driver the choice of Turf/2wd/4wd/ Diff Lock. The Pioneer 1000 EPS models get Honda’s well-received electronic power steering system, but they also add paddle shifting with three different shift modes. The paddle shift equipped models can be operated as a standard automatic, a more-sporty automatic, or completely manual with the paddle shifters. The tranny can shift for you as smoothly as any automatic, but also gives you total control of shifting by yourself. This Honda Smart, automatic Dual-Clutch transmission senses how your riding, monitoring throttle position, input, and engine RPM to determine whether you need smooth, quick shifts for a relaxed ride, or longer drawn out shifts with higher RPM to maximize engine torque and power. This same logic keeps the Pioneer in a lower gear when descending steeper hills. The Pioneer 1000 features a dual A-arm suspension front and rear with 10.5”s of travel up front and 10” in the rear. The Pioneer 1000’s 27” tires also make for over a whole foot of ground clearance. The Pioneer 1000 is built to tackle the biggest adventures as well as the biggest jobs or projects. The Pioneer 1000’s Off-Road developed suspension is designed to soak up the trail obstacles, as well as offering severe payload capabilities. A full size bed can carry a full 1000 pounds and features a tilting feature for dumping firewood, sand or gravel. A full ton (2000 pounds) of towing capability ensures that you can get the bigger jobs accomplished, without having to involve a tractor or pickup truck.

Wild Thoughts So Honda has finally done it! A Honda quality, 1000cc performance UTV is now a reality. As an all around, unlimited class, big boy UTV, this thing is sure to be amazing. Huge payload for the biggest jobs, great ground clearance for the rocks, ruts and other obstacles, and an amazing power plant/drive train. If we know anything about legendary Honda quality, it will own the market when it comes to durability, and fit & finish. If it’s anything like we expect, it might just completely reset the bar in the UTV world. We’ve all been waiting on this day for quite some time, but is this the extreme performance, track ready RZR XP1000 competition we’ve been looking for? Probably not, but it’s definitely a solid step in the right direction. This machine is still aimed at both the utility/recreation market, but we have no doubt that this power plant could be more than capable of kicking ass on the track in a longer travel, more sport oriented chassis. Honda’s Unicam technology head has been developed and perfected in their performance 4 stroke motorcycle line, and it will undoubtedly be impressive with this bigger mill. We can’t wait for our chance to ride these new Pioneer 1000’s, and were even more excited as they seem to fit right in line with the rumors of what’s to come. Bring it On HONDA! We Can’t Wait!

Can-Am Plays the Power Trump Card Four-Fold in Their
Latest Off-Road Offerings
n
othing gets an off-roader’s blood hotter than a Coonhound on the trail of a prison escapee, than those two venerable words…more power. For 2016, Can-Am has ignited those words not just once, but four times, with increased power in all four of their heart of the market engines, including their industry first 1000 turbo.

atvworld atvworldmag.com
CAN-AM 2016 It starts smack dab in the heart of the ATV market with an all-new, liquid-cooled 570 Rotax V-twin. The new motor touts four-valve heads, larger pistons and a longer stroke to deliver a class leading 48-horespower in the highly competitive 500cc-600cc segment. The new motor not only touts more raw power, but nearly a 10% gain in low-end torque as well. The power up continues in the mid big-bore arena as well, where a 7-horsepower gain can be found in the liquid-cooled 850 V-Twin Rotax. Here, engineers used larger pistons and utilized the larger throttle bodies and head from the Maverick side-by-side line for deeper breathing. The cumulative result is a whopping 78-horsepower, for the most power in its respective class. Those same power-up tricks were employed once again on the big-bore Rotax 1000R V-twin flagship motor, resulting in the most powerful, normally aspirated engine in the big-bore category. These changes give the big liter motor 89-horsepower; that’s a 7-pony gain, along with improved torque. You would think that alone would be more then enough to satisfy the power hungry masses, especially given the fact that Can-Am engineers gave enthusiasts the ultimate power-up prize last model year, with the industry’s first factory turbo-charged offering. But as any performance fan will tell you, you can never have too much of a good thing. Can-Am and Rotax made significant changes to the first year turbo offering by adding larger fuel injectors, increasing boost pressure and recalibrating the CVT, for a dramatic power upgrade that not only looks good on paper at an impressive 131-horsepower, but can be felt from the driver’s seat as well. Other key changes to the Can-Am line for 2016 include a revised maintenance schedule that bumps up the standard 200-mile (300km) break-in inspection recommendation to 1000-miles (1,500km). Can-Am claims improved quality and rigorous testing allowed them to make the change. The other new tidbit to take notice of is an Electronic Drive Belt Protection system found on the Commander MAX line of vehicles. The integrated system detects belt spotting or overheating when the vehicle is in high range, but should be driven in low-range. They system will alert the driver with a “LOW GEAR” warning on the dash, and will prohibit the vehicle from being driven further until low range is selected. The idea is to not only improve performance, but also greatly prolong belt life and avoid failures due to excessive belt slippage and heat. The system can also be outfitted to other Can-Am side-by-side vehicles as optional equipment. With four significantly all-new or upgraded engine packages for the 2016 fold, Can-Am has raised the bar for others to follow. In fact, with that much more newfound power, its safe to say the remainder of upgrades for the new model year could have been little more than bold new graphics. Fortunately for enthusiasts, they pushed on with a host of new ATV and side-by-side models as well. Here’s a look at the key new models.

CAN-AM 2016 OUTLANDER LX MR 570 For mud bog fans, another mud happy model will take up residence in the MR line for Can-Am in 2016. Offering a blend of mud specific features and components, the MR 570 throws into the mix an affordable edge, giving those looking for an affordable alternative for occasional mud use, or others looking for a second machine to add to their stable, a very attractive offering. The new Outlander LX MR 570 features 28-inch Maxxis Mudzilla tires, intake snorkel and relocated radiator, paired with the all-new Rotax 570 engine, for a combination that could be too good to pass up.
OUTLANDER L LE 570 Aside from the new 48-horsepower engine, there appears to be little new with the Outlander L. But upon closer inspection, the LE designator allows owners to order a midbore model with many of the most popular feature upgrades and accessories as a factory ready model, versus having to order the items separately or as add-ons. Popular bonus goods include power steering, aluminum wheels, reinforced seat cover, burly bumpers, six-ply tires, and attractive, painted plastic, versus molded-in color.
MOSSY OAK HUNTING EDITIONS The Can-Am crew is paying particularly close attention to the hunting segment in 2016, with several allnew Outlander L and Commander Mossy Oak Hunting Edition vehicles. Each is dipped in popular Mossy Oak Break-Up Country Camo scheme, and features a smattering of standard hunting specific accessories including a Kolpin gun boot, WARN winch, and features such as rugged bumpers, black aluminum wheels and aluminum skidplate.

MAVERICK XC DPS 1000R The side-by-side ranks have gotten plenty of attention for 2016 as well, and trail fans will be smitten with the new Maverick XC, and its narrowed 60-inch stance and 12-inches of suspension travel.
MAVERICK 1000R TURBO Of course, the vehicle that has caught the attention of nearly everyone a year ago will do more of the same in 2016, thanks in large part to its significant power upgrade. The sport’s first factory turbo vehicle returns with even more power and improved power delivery. The now 131-horsepower rated Rotax V-Twin turbo is said to not only tout more overall horsepower, but also will have a dramatically improved power delivery, thanks in part to revised clutch and turbo calibrations. Both the two and four seat MAX version will ride on FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 shocks, featuring compression adjustments and rolls on 14-inch black cast-aluminum wheels with 28-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2 tires.
MAVERICK X RS 1000R TURBO The king of the jungle for the 2016 Can-Am line is undoubtedly, the RS version of the powered-up turbo vehicle. Borrowing developments from Can-Am’s racing endeavors; both the two and four seat versions tout a longer wheelbase and rear TTA suspension, with an impressive 16-inches of travel. The “race-ready” package also includes a 4-point harness, Yoshimura exhaust, rear bumper, and a race tuned suspension calibration, developed in partnership with FOX. Yeah, this is the one everyone will be drooling over. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 2

We recently got an invite to attend the 12 Houres de la Tuque endurance race in Quebec, and race test one of these latest ZFORCE 800’s. Typically, any invite to race a Chinese UTV or ATV, especially on the super destructive, whoop filled La Tuque course would be laughed off and never spoken of again. Once again, this is where CFMOTO really sets apart from the other Chinese manufacturers and their lackluster reputations. With little to zero experience on the ZFORCE 800, we didn’t know exactly what to expect, but we figured it would have a good chance of holding up if we took it easy for the win. After arriving at the track, we were introduced to everyone from CFMOTO and then got a first look at the machines. Our race machines were completely stock with the exception of Kimpex aluminum doors, a fire extinguisher, and some custom window nets. There were about eight of us racing stock machines in the stock class and they had three “built” machines set up for three of their racers to race in the mod class. The built machines had ELKA shocks, taller tires w/beadlocks, a custom intake, exhaust and a fuel programmer. One of them, for freestyler

Jason Thorne, even had the motor built with high compression, web cams and porting. These modded machines sounded like completely different animals compared to the stockers, and I was wondering if we should even be on the same track with them. The ZFORCE 800 stockers were pretty well set up as well. They come stock with a nice contoured roof, a high performance CV-Tech clutch, front and rear bumpers, and alloy wheels wrapped in 6 ply tires. The tilt wheel will locate the steering wheel to a comfortable spot, but you have
to remove the seat and use tools to slide the seat forward or back. At six foot, I had to move the seat quite a bit to find a comfortable setting, but it was slotted to allow for it. Once the seat and steering wheel was adjusted, it felt like the OE supplied, four point harnesses really didn’t hold you in correctly. After inspecting the set up, it was determined that the OE mounting tabs are mounted way to high, yielding a pretty worthless set up. By design, a harness needs to mount below the occupant’s shoulder blades, so that the belt
can go up over and down the front of the chest, holding the passenger down into the seat. Apparently they completely missed the boat on this one, but we found a very simple solution to make it closer to correct. We unbolted our top mounts, re-ran them underneath the cross bar, and back up to the original mounts, creating a pull point that was about even with the top of the shoulders, versus running directly to the mount three inches above you shoulders. We all headed down to the test track to dial in the shocks and get a feeling for

the car’s handling. The ELKA engineers were on hand, trying to get a proper set up dialed in for the modified cars, and we pounded out a few laps in the stocker. The short practice course loop was packed with deep ruts and sand whoops. The stock ZFORCE handling was very impressive right from the get go. The stock shocks were set up incredibly well, and they didn’t seem to fade when you kept pushing them. After watching the modded cars in the whoops, it was determined that the stock set up was working every bit as well as the early ELKA set up. The engineers made some drastic adjustments to rebound and compression and they appeared better, but were destined for another revalve to be correct. We set up a little “mock moto” between my stocker and Jason’s built one, and lap after lap, it was clearly soaking up the deep stuff better. The modded motor would pull the stocker drastically in the straightaways, but it caught up by staying level and hooked up in the deeper whoops. The ELKA guys went to work
revalving with their newfound data, and we went to bed pretty confident in our stock set up. The UTV format for La Tuque had full course practice, with lap times for qualifying on Friday, and then a 1-hour moto Saturday and a 1-hour moto on Sunday. Practice and qualifying went pretty well and we qualified 1st; 4 seconds faster than the 2nd place stocker and only 7 seconds behind the first place modded ZFORCE. Qualifying first would mean that we were in front of all the other stock CFMOTO’s for the parade lap and a rolling flag start. With winning as a pre-requisite, and beating the faster, modded out cars on the brain, we lined up for staging. We started out in front of all the stock ZFORCES and even one of the mod cars. The rolling start worked out better than expected, and we managed to pass one of the other modded cars in the first turn. The car worked really well, and I chased Jason Thorne around the track for a handful of laps as the two CFMOTO leaders (stock & mod). The mod
car would pull in the straights, but I was able to catch up on the downhills and a few of the tighter turns. Just as he was stating to gap me on the longest straightaway, he blew a belt and was pretty much out of the race. I hammered a couple of laps out with about 20 seconds on 2nd place, and just when I was thinking to hit cruise control for an eventual win, all hell broke loose in the front end. After a slightly abusive front wheel landing, my car started making smacking and clunking noises from the front end. I assumed it was an axle and stopped to shift out of 4wd to see if it would better the situation. Surprisingly, in two-wheel drive, the problem went completely away. This led me to believe there was a diff problem versus an axle, and I tried to keep motoring it in 2wd for the win. Pretty much the entire track consisted of soft sand and the ruts were really deep in a few corners. The ZFORCE and its 26 inch tires were dealing with limited ground clearance in comparison to the 1000 cc XP 1000’s, and Mavericks digging the

ruts with their 30 inch monster tires. In order to keep from dragging out the undercarriage, I picked a slower outside line, using momentum to keep from getting hung up in the ruts. After a few successful laps, I came to the deepest rutted turn to find two cars already stuck/broken in the ruts. Slamming the brakes to avoid pile driving them blew my momentum idea right out the window. Sitting there stuck, with both rear wheels spinning freely in the air, I watched the track crew clear the blockage in front of me, and then they came for me. They quickly hooked up a tow rope and just when I thought I might still be able to salvage my lead, my ambitions were crushed by the tow vehicle sinking into the soft sand and getting stuck. They were yelling at me in French; I’m pretty sure it had to do with me being in two wheel drive, but it was definitely lost in the translation. The 2nd place CFMOTO stocker went by as they were hooking up an additional tow vehicle into the train. On the

first dual pull attempt, they both got stuck again, but they were able to back out of it and hammer me out of the situation. A few more stockers managed to sneak by while we were unhooking. Finally unstuck, I hammered down as hard as I know how and pounded out laps. Hoping for a miracle, but definitely staying wide on the deep ruts. I passed a few of the cars back, but was unable to catch the leader, having to settle for second place. Upon further inspection, it was an internal issue with the front differential. One of the other machines had suffered the same fate in Friday’s practice, so I’m not really sure if mine was a flaw or self induced. In CFMOTOS defense, we were flogging the crap out of them, and I did land on the gas on the front wheels. Saturday night’s party plans were pushed south, and we spent the next 3-4 hours replacing my front differential. Unfortunately, after someone else needing one on Friday, my spare differential was located in one of the Demo machines. This meant double the work, as we had to remove it from one car to the other. The ZFORCE wasn’t terrible to work on, but there were a few clearance oversights that cost a little more time than normally necessary for a diff swap. I would love to thank Shawn Antoski for all his help, as the celebrity driver/ hockey player stayed up all night drinking and rebuilding front ends with me. What
he lacked in mechanical knowledge, he more than made up for with enthusiasm, comedic interference, and brute strength. We finally got her back on the ground at around 1:00 am. The 8:00 am riders meeting came early, and we were powering through minimal sleep, and a bit of a hangover. The practice lap seemed normal and I hit the rolling start with enthusiasm, looking for redemption. I might have had just a little too much “enthusiasm” off the second wedge jump in front of the grandstands, as I landed hard on the front end again, pinning it to pull out of an endo situation. The car felt pretty normal for the first lap, until I got to the tight lefthander at the end of the scoring shoot. As I went to turn left, I realized that something was bent in the front end, keeping me from being able to make the tight radius. After climbing off the K rail a couple of times, I was able to get through the turn and back on track. I failed miserably at this same turn for the first five laps, before figuring out how to aggressively brake slide into it, and then creep slowly out of it to avoid pushing into the wall. Once I had “the turn” figured out, I went to work trying to catch back up to everybody that had gone by me while stuck on the wall for the first laps. I made a few good passes and then caught Shawn Antoski for what would have been second position. I lost a little ground to

him in “the turn”, and then set out to pass him on the big downhill heading into the gravel pit. The inside line was the main line, but I had been blowing people’s doors off for two days by pinning it down the outside and late braking them. Just as I was about to close the door on Shawn, his car hit a breaking bump and swapped into my front end, essentially “checking” me off the track. The sketch part of the outside line was the immediate three to four foot drop off of the edge of the course. I pile drove into the ground, deservedly breaking a few front end components, and ending my race a couple of laps early. Reading my race report might make you think twice about the ZFORCE’s capability, but don’t let it. We raced completely stock machines, on a brutal whooped out course with little to no hold back, and for the most part, they all lived. Many of the slower drivers experienced zero problems, and there were even a couple of pretty gnarly rollovers that didn’t even slow the machines or “drivers” down. DNF or not, I left completely impressed. These are not long travel XP 1000s or Mavericks, but man, they’re pretty darn good for what they are. CFMOTO offers
very reasonable pricing, top-notch financing options, and by far, the best warranty in the industry. CFMOTOS 5 year limited warranty, compared to the typical 1 year, truly says a lot about their commitment to customer service, as well as faith in the product line.

Now that the riding season is in full swing, we’d like to bring you up to speed on a few new products that have come across our desks here at ATV World Magazine. You be the judge, but we’re pretty sure these products are definitely in the “Need” vs “Want” category on the shopping list.
The designers over at Sedona never rest. New for this season, from Sedona Tire, is the Badlands Wheel. A set of these bad boys transforms your buggy into a head-turning, chin-nodding and woman-screaming ride of excellence – What, it could happen? Looks aside, the Badlands are constructed of High-Grade aluminum that makes them strong and lightweight at the same time. Designed to take the abuse that the larger ATV/UTV of today gives to wheels, these Badlands are not going to disappoint. Available in 12 and 14 inch sizes, and of course the caps are included.

Five MXF Pro-Rider Off-road Glove
3 6
A solid pair of gloves is going to make for a much better day on the trails. The MXF Pro-Rider Glove from Five is one serious glove for the avid off-road rider, and it all stems from three features found in the palm. First, the Five™ designers strategically placed gel pads that help suck up bar vibration you feel when you are smashing down the trail. Then they used Clarino material on the palm, which is a synthetic leather-like material that out performs real leather in performance and durability, all the while, still offering great breathability. Last, the designers at Five™ also added a silicone imprint to the palm to prevent hand slippage when things get wet or muddy. Those, right there, are three pretty good reasons to take a serious look at the MXF Pro-Rider Glove from Five™. Boom. Available in Canada from your local Motovan dealer: www. motovan.com
F2 Carbon Rockstar >>>>>>
Need a new bucket protector this year? May we suggest you have a look at the Fly F2 Carbon. We at ATV World have had a chance to wear this helmet, and can contest it is a lightweight comfortable helmet designed for the aggressive rider who works up a sweat. New for this season is the fact they added a Rockstar graphic package. Come on, you have to admit it, you just said, “yeah that’s pretty cool”. Who doesn’t want to feel like a sponsored Rockstar racer? Available in Canada through your local Gamma Dealer: www.gammasales.com. For complete Fly Helmet information check out: www.flyracing.com

Kryptonite Tracking System
>>>>>>

>>>>>>
+ Broncho Wheel Spacer
Listen guys, we don’t like to talk about certain things, but sometimes it is better to get it out in the open and discuss as adults. ATV/UTV theft is on the rise. There, we said it. We know ATV’s and UTV’s are not a cheap investment anymore. Not to mention that most guys add thousands of dollars of aftermarket accessories, it is an unfortunate fact that the DB thieves have taken note of this, and turned their interest to our toys. Kryptonite has developed a real-time GPS-based security & locating system that tracks your ride anywhere 24/7. In the event of a theft, every second counts and early warning is the vital to getting your buggy back. With a Kryptonite system installed you get access to the location, direction and speed in real-time of the stolen unit, and that information is globally accessible due the fact that satellites are involved. That data can then be provided directly to law enforcement who can use the tracking data to catch the DB and lock his ass up in jail. OK that was a bit much, but you get the point. Other features include water resistant shell, sleep mode to save battery and an internal battery backup. We guarantee you will sleep a little better knowing this is on-board, and hey call your insurance agent, as there might also be a reduction off your insurance rates. Boom! The Kryptonite might actually make you money in the long run.
Are you looking for an inexpensive trick to widen the stance of your buggy? The new wheel spacers from Broncho are the answer. You may be asking yourself, why would I want to? The answer lies in the benefits of a slightly wider stance. Up front, adding width, helps plant the buggy a little better and adds a level of stability you will definitely notice over a narrower stance, and in the rear, having a wider stance actually helps in corning ability. The Broncho Wheel Spacer is constructed with billet, and are drilled to allow the stock wheel nuts to countersink into the spacer which ensures a nice flat surface for the wheel to sit against. The spacers are sold in pairs, and come in different series designed to match OEM hubs. Available through your local Gamma dealer: www.gammasales.com

RZR 1000XP owners rejoice! High Lifter has introduced front lower control arms that offer up some serious clearance over the stock. These bad boys give you the most clearance available without adding a lift or changing the driveline angles that are found on a stock RZR. In addition the designers also made these incredibly strong and engineered them not to add any additional wear on CV joints, bearings or ball joints. Enjoy the added the clearance and now you have the ability to run 34” tires. Boom. For complete details check out: www.highlifter.com
Hyper Series Light Bar
>>>
Nothing changes your buggy for the better than mounting a bad-ass light bar. The “look cool value” alone is worth the upgrade. But it is the feeling you get when you flick the switch for the first time on a night ride that really makes it all worth it. Guaranteed you will mutter, “Oh Hell Yeah! The new Hyper Series light bar from Slasher Products is not going to disappoint. To begin, the housing is made from lightweight durable aluminum with built-in heat sinks, which prevents the lights from overheating at maximum power. Then add to the fact the lenses are made from impact resistant Polycarbonate you start to take notice that this bar is made to take the abuse. Last but not least, the lights themselves are US-Made Cree LED’s which offer up some crazy light output and tote 30,000 hours of “stay bright” performance. Think about it; 30,000 hours – that’s 1250 days of constant light. If you wear this light bar out we applaud you and name you, ‘The King’ of the night-timeweekend-warriors. Engine Ice
Coolant is the lifeblood of any high performance engine. Today engines are running hotter, and producing more power than ever before. Engine Ice is the coolant that is developed and proven to reduce operating temps. Born on the racetrack, Engine Ice was originally developed and tested in the off-road motorcycle circuit and right out of the bottle it reduced engine temp. Skip forward to today, and now everyone from Street Bikes to UTV’s are using Engine Ice to keep operating temperatures at optimum levels to not lose power through excessive heat. Engine Ice is also biodegradable, nontoxic, and phosphate free – that’s a nice touch don’t you agree?

We don’t have to explain how a flat ruins the day. There is nothing more frustrating than the moment you feel that flat tire when you are 25miles into the bush. You know what we are talking about, it’s part anger and part terror. -“What the hell am I going to do now….?” May we introduce a product that is going make that feeling go away. TireJect, is not your typical tire sealant. It is much thinner and way easier to use. Using the supplied tool you simply inject 8oz of TireJect through the valve stem and rotate the wheel. The thin, fast-moving sealant uses actual Kevlar technology and liquid rubber to fill the hole that has wrecked your day. Guys are also using TireJect for preventive purposes by pre-treating tires before the hole happens. ATV World is awaiting samples to test, so stand by for a more in-depth review. Currently available in the US., and soon to be in Canada. TireJect will ship direct to Canada, however, you are going to pay a little more for freight. Shared Passion
T
he saying “time marches on” has never been more vivid in my tenure on this planet than over the course of the past month. June is unofficially known as graduation season, especially for those of us who have a son or daughter nearing, is currently or has recently graduated. After consuming my fair share of potato salad, pasta salad and of course graduation cake, the weekend had finally arrived to celebrate my oldest daughter’s graduation. Both my daughter and I are about to close one chapter in our lives and open another…it’s a bittersweet moment. The weeks leading up to her personal celebration of accomplishment was filled with preparations including scouring old photographs and academic accolades. As is so often the case whenever you reacquaint yourself with old photos, I soon found myself awash in memories. When it comes to childhood memories I’ve always believed its not where you go or what you do that truly leave a lasting imprint in their lives. While some families choose to take trips to Europe

or Disney World, I always believed in keeping it simple, and sharing my own personal passions was the best way to build lasting memories. When my children were younger, I drove them to school every morning. Working from a home office gave me the latitude to do so, and it created a lasting memory for both of them. During the warm weather months we’d ride three abreast in my classic International pickup. The hum of the old V8 and the rattle of the truck cab as we made our way down country back roads created the perfect pallet to talk about school, friends and to share a few laughs along the way. I miss those mornings, but I find a pure sense of gratification that I instilled the value of simplicity in their lives through that old truck and those early morning drives. I’m reminded of this as my daughter talks fondly of that old truck, calling it her favorite, well ahead of a meticulously restored muscle car and other much newer and “fancier” vehicles parked in our garage. As I continued to pour over the old photos I came across a few more that sparked a barrage of memories for both her and I. The smile on her face as she sat on the seat of an early Polaris sideby-side sitting in our driveway reminded
me of another lasting memory we created together. While we didn’t get the opportunity to ride together as often as I may have liked, the times we did created a fondness for powersports that both my daughters will hopefully one day share with their families. This summer my daughter will be busy preparing for college - gathering items for her room, registering for classes, and working part time to squirrel away spending money for the year to come. Yet despite this long list of “must do’s” she is still intrigued when I bring home a new ATV or sideby-side to evaluate…a ride down the street or around the neighborhood trails is always in order, and my smile grows only bigger when she asks to drive. Her own smile is a vibrant reminder of the allure and family qualities of powersports; from ATVs and side-bysides to motorcycles and snowmobiles. It is that smile and those of our own that solidifies the most important aspect of these vehicles we all love so much – it’s not the thrill of the ride but rather how it brings family and friends closer together. This summer share your passion with those you love, no matter what it might be – you’ll be rewarded for years to come.

Piero Manzini CFMOTO
The influx of new makers into the off-road fold has been ever increasing as of late and one that is definitely making a significant impact in the market is CFMoto. We’ve had several opportunities to test several CFMoto products including side-by-sides, ATVs and even motorcycles. Each one has left us impressed, and secretly rooting for the company as the giant Asian maker continues to make inroads into the North American market. Recently we caught up with CFMoto Canada Marketing Director Piero Manzini, who is responsible for expanding the CFMoto brand. In between Piero’s advertising, promotions and event initiatives, we got his last words for this issue’s Last Turn. LAST ATV/UTV RIDE YOU TOOK? I have a cool future ride planed with freestyler Jason Thorne driving a CFMoto UFORCE 800 at the CFMoto Park to Park Do It For Dads ATV Rally in Parry Sound. I hope Jason doesn’t decide to do a flip for the fun of it. SOMEONE WHO MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? I’ve been really fortunate to have great mentors along my life’s journey. I also admire people that approach challenges with a vision and work hard to overcome them. LAST BAND YOU SAW IN CONCERT? I’ve been watching footage of David Bowie’s Reality Tour. The live version (from my computer) of HEROES really rocks. LAST TIME YOU GOT STUCK? My 1986 Volkswagen Syncro Vanagon never gets stuck! LAST THING YOU HAD TO EAT? I recently barbequed some awesome 2-inch thick T-bone steaks for my 89 year old uncle from Italy who was visiting his 90 year old sister. He loved it! LAST TRIP YOU TOOK OUT OF THE COUNTRY? I go to Europe a lot. Next on the list is Ecuador in South America…lots of adventure there. I’ve made some great friends at CFMoto in France so I hope to hook up with them soon too. When it comes to travel I say, bring it on! LAST TIME YOU CRASHED? I haven’t crashed lately BUT I did witness

Mark Hammerton climb a concrete barrier in a CFMoto ZFORCE and steer it back on the track to finish a race at La Tuque. That was something! LAST TIME YOU DROVE OVER 100MPH? Everyday on my way to breakfast! LASTING IMPRESSION YOU’D LIKE TO LEAVE SOMEONE WITH ABOUT CFMOTO? Great company, great product and fun to work for. Oh yeah…and the best Marketing Director! LAST ATV/UTV INDUSTRY EVENT YOU ATTENDED? Enjoyed having a beer with (ATV World Editor) Nick Nelson at 12 Hours of La Tuque Endurance Race in May this year. We were thrilled that ATV World was there and racing with us. We had a blast. LAST THING YOU READ? The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. This is a great guide for both life and business. It just reinforces to be fair and honest. LAST TIME YOU RACED? Everyday on my way to breakfast, this job is very demanding! LAST THING YOUR MOTHER ALWAYS TOLD YOU TO DO? Drive safely. Mothers always say that. She says it all the time, even if I’m taking a plane. LASTING OFF-ROAD MEMORY? Demo driving at the test field at CFMoto headquarters during last year’s Canada/ Sweden Dealer Contest. It was hot, sweaty,
dusty and a pile of fun! LAST WORK RELATED PROJECT OR VEHICLE THAT MADE YOU SAY “HELL YEAH”? Seeing some great results from our Force Tour demo days at dealers this spring and continuing into summer! LAST TIME YOU WERE LOST? Driving through the endless vineyards in the hills of the Prosecco wine region in Northern Italy. I mean literally driving in the vineyards. The leaves of the grape vines were brushing along the windows on both sides of the car. The turn I took onto this “trail” had a street sign on it! It was an incredible experience. LAST THING YOU’D BRING WITH YOU ON A DESERTED ISLAND? You mean the last thing I really don’t want on a deserted island? How about my Articrated Parka or a sun lamp?! LAST TIME YOU LAUGHED SO HARD YOU NEARLY WET YOUR PANTS? Everyday. It’s all about family and friends and enjoying the ride! LAST ATV OR SIDE-BY-SIDE YOU DROVE THAT BLEW YOUR MIND? Our new 2016 ZFORCE HO Class. It’s perfect for the trails and the new rules for side-by-sides in Ontario and perfect price too. Great package. LAST WORDS OF ADVICE? Let the Force be with you…and long live the revolution.
