IS THAT A SOAKER? Spring time mud, it seems thicker.
W
ith the added obstacles provided by Mother Nature, Spring makes riding a lot of fun. For many of the people that I ride with, it’s their favorite time of the year. Obviously these people are the ones that can never get enough mud and like to see how far they can “make it” through the obstacle while many detour around them. These people are easy to spot in any group; they’re the ones that show up in hip waders, and have cold drinks. They look ridiculous but they do make sense. It’s a lot of fun but it takes up quite a bit more time, extra time not only are we winching, pushing, pulling out, were
laughing and monkeying around with someone’s latest and greatest must have product but the clean up is brutal. Usually you’re covered in some form of mud all the way from your gear to your ATV or side-by-side. Unless you’re one of those people with a fashion sense for hip waders, then clean up can mean hours. Everything considered it’s great to get out and hit the local trails again in the warmer weather, its a lot more relaxing and we all seem to stop a lot more now and take in the fresh air and scents of spring blossoms, rather than in the winter or when the bugs really come out
and of course stopping at the water hazards to laugh harder because you can’t believe your buddy got that stuck or went that deep in the quagmire. One thing is for sure everything is deeper, a little further and seems to take a little longer in the Spring. It’s time to gear up again for another big season, and I know that we won’t be slowing down for some time. Well, we all outta time, so until that next time comes, we’ll be in the shop, installing our winches and possibly contemplating whether or not to order hip waders.
Water holes are deeper.
Darryl proves to us that you do actually get dirtier in the spring… proven fact it takes longer to clean up after a spring ride. 10

POLARIS INTRODUCES SPORTSMAN AND OUTLAW 110 EFI YOUTH MODELS
Polaris Industries Inc. introduced the Sportsman 110 EFI and Outlaw 110 EFI youth models as part of the company’s continuing innovation of its off-road product offerings. The new models are the first youth ATVs to offer EFI and will be available in dealerships in May. The Sportsman and Outlaw 110 EFI youth models will replace the current Sportsman and Outlaw 90 models and include an upgraded 110cc engine for improved off-road performance and Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) for easier cold starting, reduced maintenance and improved run and idle quality. Both models will be classified as Y-10+ for riders 10 years old and older with adult supervision. The vehicles’ speed is limited to less than 15 mph/24.1 kph as delivered, and the speed control system allows adults to increase the speed to a maximum of up to 29 mph/47 kph. The Sportsman 110 EFI will be available in Sage Green while the Outlaw 110 EFI in Voodoo Blue. Polaris is the industry leader in youth off-road vehicles and leads the way in promoting youth rider safety. Other vehicle features include an electric start, automatic transmission, 4-stroke engine, and long travel suspension. Similar to all other Polaris youth models purchased from an authorized dealer, the Sportsman and Outlaw 110 EFI will come with a high visibility whip flag and safety video. All Polaris youth vehicles also come with a DOT-approved helmet (two for the RZR 170 EFI) to help teach kids the importance of wearing the proper safety gear.

TEAM UXC RACING PUTS SCRAMBLER ON TOP OF THE PODIUM AGAIN
Team UXC Racing headed to Springville, Ind. for GNCC Racing’s Round 5, the Limestone 100 this past weekend, returning with two big wins for the Scrambler 850. Michael Swift’s took the 4x4 Pro Class and morning overall on his Scrambler 850. Off the start, Team UXC teammates Kevin Trantham and Swift quickly worked their way to the front of the class in what was set to be a wet and slick day of racing. Swift took the lead around the 4-mile marker on lap one with Trantham close behind. On the start of lap two, Swift managed to create a small gap between him and his class which he was able to build on each lap. Despite the rain which made the course more difficult, Swift was able to hold his lead all the way to the checkered flag with 1 minute and 40 seconds to spare. The win would be Swift’s first of the season and moved him into third place in the class standings for the year, with Trantham, who finished fifth, sitting in second. mOff a third place finish last race, Team UXC Racing’s 4x4 Senior Racer Don Higbee would also take the win on his Scrambler 850 for his first win of the season. Higbee sits in third for the season in the class. The next GNCC race is the Tomahawk, in Odessa, NY, May 9-10, and the next UTV and Single Seat Race will be the Mountaineer, at Marvin’s Mountain Top, in Masontown, West Virginia, May 23-24. 14

NEWS CAN-AM X-TEAM RACERS DOMINATE BIG BUCK GNCC
Riders Earn 4x4 Pro and Side-By-Side Podium Sweeps In South Carolina. Can-Am X-Team ATV and side-by-side vehicle racers swept both the 4x4 Pro and UTV XC1 Pro class podiums at the Big Buck (GNCC) race held in Union, S.C. Chaney, 2014 GNCC UTV XC1 Pro class champion, notched his first victory of 2015, after posting three wins last year. Chaney was joined on the box by Can-Am Maverick / Off-road Motorsports racer Treavis Poynter and Can-Am / JB Racing / Houser Racing pilot Larry Hendershot, Jr. The three Ohio-based racers battled in the top three positions all afternoon at Big Buck, with Poynter leading all but the final lap. On a narrow course, heavily crowded with lappers, Chaney found his way around Poynter on the final lap to earn his first win. Poynter ended up second, but, when paired with his firstplace finish at round one of the UTV series, gives him a 13point lead going into the next round. Hendershot’s first podium of 2015 moved him to fourth in the class standings. Can-Am Maverick 1000R racers also own the UTV XC2 Pro Sport class points lead after the VP Racing Fuels Big Buck GNCC event. Can-Am / Jack’s Excavating driver Joe Krcelich finished fourth, but won round one and currently has a four-point cushion over Maverick racer Dave Plavi, who earned a third-place finish in South Carolina. Rich Travalena Jr., competing in the Amateur Limited class for Can-Am, notched his first victory and second podium of the year to climb to within one point of the class leader. In 4x4 ATV action, Buckhannon convinced all competitors that he is out to replicate last year’s impressive title run. Buckhannon had a stellar wire-to-wire victory aboard his CanAm Renegade 800R X xc over two other Renegade racers as Jordan Phillips and Zac Zakowski earned their first podiums of the season, finishing second and third, for a complete the Big Buck podium sweep. Buckhannon has a nine-point lead heading into round five. Can-Am 4x4 racers also notched two other class wins and six total podium finishes. Forrest Whorton won the 4x4 Senior (40+) class, while Matthew Ewart took the 4x4 C class victory.

POLARIS HELPS RIDERS URGE U.S. REPRESENTATIVES TO SUPPORT THE RIDE ACT Polaris has launched new tools to urge U.S. Representatives to cosponsor H.R. 999, The RIDE (ROV In-Depth Examination) Act. To help show their support of this newly-introduced bill, off-road enthusiasts can follow a direct link from Polaris’ news page to send a message to their local representatives. The link, along with this article can be found at http://www.polaris.com/en-us/company/newsitem.aspx?articleID=336. After congress received more than 90,000 messages concerning the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) proposed mandates for offroad, side-by-side vehicles (ROVs), U.S. Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-KS) and Collin Peterson (D-MN) introduced The RIDE Act. The bill would postpone the ROV rulemaking until the CPSC’s proposals are studied and evaluated by the National Academy of Sciences in consultation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Department of Defense (DOD). This independent review will help ensure that ROV design standards are appropriate for off-road riding environments, will not unnecessarily compromise off-road performance and safety, and will not lead to unintended consequences. The new grassroots campaign will urge representatives of riders and dealers to support The RIDE Act. For more information about the CPSC ROV Rulemaking, visit www.StoptheROVMandate.com.

THE TRUE COST MAY NOT BE THAT OBVIOUS
At
the time of writing this article, spring has finally sprung here in North Bay. The weather has certainly changed everyone’s mood including my own. But my sour mood wasn’t really caused by the winter (well, maybe just a little). What had me bent out of shape was the fact that when I went to watch the AMA Supercross this past Saturday night, Shaw Direct TV decided, much to my surprise, to drop the Speed Channel from their sports line-up. I would like to tell you what I really think…But I think the Editor would change the wording anyways. I’m sure glad I didn’t sign a contract with them. I think I’ll “surprise” them and cancel my subscription. The real topic at hand for this edition, has to do with a frustrating situation that has been going on for over four years. The situation I am referring to is the legal action being taken against the Rumball Camp of the Deaf, (known as the Ontario Camp of the Deaf) which is ten minutes south of Parry Sound, Ontario. For those of you who have ridden at the OCD, you are aware of most of what is going on and

what I will be talking about. I first want to mention that I have had the privilege to work with this camp on many occasions over the years, so if my wording seems a bit biased, I ask for your indulgence. You will also be hearing only one side of the story; in my opinion, the important side.
I had a chance to talk to Derek Rumball, the Executive Director of the Rumball Camp of the Deaf, to get caught up, (as we have been friends for some time now) and to get an update on what was going on in regards to the litigation. Also, I wanted to confirm the facts of how this situation came to be, and if there was any light at the end of this very long tunnel. Here is what came out across the table. Well, back sometime around 2008, a seasonal resident of the surrounding area had come forward and mentioned to Rumball that exhaust sound was migrating in an annoying manner towards the person’s residence. At this time the camp started to develop, through acoustic modeling and sound testing, a sound protocol that would start to deal with and bring the exhaust noises under control. This was an in depth approach to resolve the issue at hand. It included multiple sound meters being used at a time and changing the landscape to absorb the sound waves. During the next two years, other residents and the municipality were cooperative in developing this process. Then in September 2010, while a motorsport event was taking place at the OCD, a private company specializing in measuring sound levels, (hired by a group
www.atvworldmag.com
of seasonal residents) set up their instruments to measure the sound levels being generated at the event. The camp really felt as if it were sandbagged, as it was thought that everyone was working together collaboratively to resolve the problem. The data gathered at this one and only event is what is being used to support the charge against the camp. The different part about this charge, according to Rumball, is that this was not put forward by any authority or the municipality, but by a private citizen under the Provincial Offences Act, representing a group of seasonal residents. The concern is under the Environmental Protection Act, (EPA) under some section relating to noise pollution. It has taken four years to get to court, (September 2014) so this raises the question, how bad is the situation really? Basically, it is an event that occurred at a specific time and place, and not a situation that is of an ongoing nature. The court will be judging if the contamination (noise) was excessive on that one day only, and nothing else. Rumball says the feeling is that this charge of private prosecution is being used as a mechanism for a person with financial resources to impose their will on someone else. You have one person fronting an organized effort to act against the work of the Rumball Camp of the Deaf. www.atvworldmag.com
The track is still being used on specifically scheduled times and days, and every motorcycle and ATV must pass a sound test before riding. I have had personal experience in having my own bike tested before I rode, and it is as good, if not better than any other sound test procedure I have had to go through.
This sound testing will be done at every Motocamp for each participant as well. If it is too loud, you don’t ride, it’s that simple. Those involved at the OCD Motocamp also educate that noise does not transfer into power. It is time to bury that misconception. At the end of the day though, the simple solution is that each and every rider is responsible to make sure their motorcycle, ATV or any type of vehicle for that matter, does not produce unnecessary, annoying sounds that would cause a similar situation to those that the Camp of the Deaf is currently going through. In this case, one bad apple can spoil the bushel. Derek’s Dad had a saying that every kid deserves to go to camp. Derek has also added that every kid deserves to ride a dirtbike or ATV at camp. I happen to agree with both. The Rumball Camp of the Deaf has been providing amazing summer camp experiences to campers of all abilities and challenges for over fifty years. The court process is very expensive. Rumball estimates that the court costs being incurred could be equal to the subsidies required to look after 800 – 1000 campers. In the end, this is the true cost of this situation.

RAZORS
When it comes to cutting that hipster looking beard, we have hundreds of options for straight, disposable or electric razors. The modern razor was invented in the 18th century, but razor like objects have been found dating back to 18,000 BC.
RAZOR SCOOTER RAZOR RAMON These guy’s brought back the scooter! The scooter fad seems to make a comeback every ten years or so. In my day we had tubing frames and six or seven inch pneumatic tires. They seemed to disappear just as fast as they had gained popularity. Razor has brought back the scooter with hard wheels, and an aluminum folding chassis, initially aimed at the kindergarten crowd, the scooter is back on the teen-scene again. High performance models have 10-14 year old’s filling up the skate parks again on the regular.
The 4-time WWF champion Razor Ramon wasn’t Canadian, but his short-lived comeback was played by one. American Scott Hall played Razor Ramon from 92-96, but Canadian Rick Bognar continued to play him in late 96, becoming known as the Fake Razor Ramon. Razor Ramon was a tough act to follow as he’d battled drug, alcohol, and legal issues ever since. The life of a hard partying wrestler has taken its toll and Ramon with multiple rehab stints, jail time, and severe medical issues by the time he turned 50.
RAZOR RUDDOCK Named the Razor for his cutting jab, but was better known for his left hook/uppercut “dubbed” “The Smash” Donavan (Razor) Ruddock is a former Canadian Heavyweight champion that went 19 rounds with boxing legend Mike Tyson. His career was derailed with a shoulder injury in 2001, but recently made an impressive comeback at 51 years old with a fifth round knockout of Raymond Olubowale.

MOTOROLA RAZR The original OG of badass phones. I had a one… Make that more like two or three with my clumsy hands and AT&T’s replacement plan. The RAZR flip phone was released in 2004, selling more than 130 million units in 4 years. The thin, stylish clamshell type phone can still be found today in some third world countries.

RZR XP 1000 The tagline is “RZR Sharp Performance” with a reason. With so many cool namesakes, it’s no wonder the RZR XP 1000 is the best selling sport performance UTV in the world. The RZR has progressed from the first EFI fed 760cc twin with 9 inches of travel in 2008 to Polaris RZR’s complete 2015 line-up with the XP 1000 rightfully at the top. The 999cc, 2 and 4 seat XP 1000’s eat up violent terrain with 29” tires, 18”s of suspension travel and huge horsepower.

Hydrate Right
Instant Air Blast
With spring here and summer coming, the riding weather is going to be warming up quickly. Just like working out, you need to hydrate well before riding in the heat in order to avoid dehydration. Drinking plenty of high quality H2O all week is the key.
Next time you’re trying to bead up an ATV/UTV tire, try pulling the valve core and ditching the air chuck. The quick disconnect on an air hose will blast more air volume into the tire quicker than using an air chuck. Once the bead seats, you can reinstall your valve core and set the tire pressure.

Instant Jack Strap
Instant Jack Hole
Another vehicle and a tow strap, pulling carefully from the top of your UTV cage can tilt your UTV up enough to change a tire or fix a broken suspension part when you don’t have a jack. This is an emergency maneuver, but we’ve been saved by it on more than one occasion.
In an extreme case when you don’t have a jack or another vehicle to pull you with a strap, digging a hole might be your only option. In a desert race, we were able to replace a broken axle by digging out a hole under the tire, deep enough to leave it hanging. We used a nearby dirt mound to keep the rest of the car elevated and it worked, but we’ll definitely be carrying a jack next time!
EFI Tuner Bypass
Easy Overnight Brake Tune-up
If an EFI machine with an aftermarket fuel programmer shuts off and leaves you stranded, start at the core. Today’s EFI tuners offer amazing technology, but it only takes one broken wire or internal failure to leave you dead in the water. Most modified ATVs and UTVs will still run well enough to get you home with the programmer unhooked. Most models plug inline between the injectors, and can easily be unplugged right there as well. 26

For firmer, more accurate brake lever feel, try leaving your front lever cinched to the handlebar overnight with a zip-tie. Leaving the brakes held “applied” overnight allows the internal air bubbles to work their way up and out of your brake system for a much firmer, more positive brake lever feel in the morning. www.atvworldmag.com

HOW
CV AXLE INSTALL
CV Axles are used to drive just about every IRS vehicle ever made. UTV, ATV, car, or truck; if it’s got an independent suspension setup, it has CV axles. The CV axle is basically a hardened axle shaft with “joints” on both ends, allowing the wheel to be driven while the suspension lets it move up and down with the terrain. On a pavement vehicle, or even a mild mannered utility quad, these CV axles might even outlast the vehicle, but with today’s longer travel, high performance vehicles, they are almost considered a consumable. Longer suspension travel requires that the CVs operate at greater angles, and more HP/torque increases the load on the shaft and joint, and bigger/heavier tires pose even more resistance. With vehicles like the RZR XP 1000, Maverick, and WildCat pushing
How-To with ATV WORLD
1 Carefully lift the damaged end of your UTV and support it with a bike stand or jack stands for additional safety. If it’s filthy with CV grease all over, do your best to clean it up before starting. If you’re at home and have the luxury of a pressure washer, use it. CV grease is pretty nasty stuff; it gets everywhere and doesn’t really like to wash off.
3 Remove the cotter key from the axle/hub with a pair of side cutters. Remove hub nut and spring washers. Pay attention to the way they come off with the cups facing in, and set them aside in the same order for reinstall later. 28

over a hundred HP and cycling 16”-18” of wheel travel, it’s no wonder that we’re seeing more and more CV failure. If you drive your performance UTV to its potential, it’s pretty certain that you’re gonna be changing one at some point in time. Luckily, manufactures like Polaris sell complete CVs, ready to install for around $250 for the rear and $225 for the front. A complete CV axle shaft can be installed in about 15 minutes with hand tools and a good floor jack. If you completely destroy the original, leaving nothing but a stub in the gearcase, it might take a little longer to get the old one out, but we can show you a couple of tricks for that too. We will showcase swapping out a CV on a RZR XP 1000, which is exactly the same on an XP 900, and very similar on just about any other UTV or ATV in existence. Take your time, pay attention to what you remove, and stay organized and it will be back rolling in no time.
2 Remove the wheel from the corner with the damaged CV. If you don’t have an impact gun, it is a good idea to break the lug nuts and the center axle/hub nut loose before lifting the car from the ground. You can slide the removed wheel under the UTV for out of the way storage, and an additional safety catch if your jack were to fail.
4 Remove the two outer radius rod bolts, move rods out of the way and remove brake caliper bolts. Remove the caliper from the brake rotor and zip tie it safely to the side. Ensure that brake pads and squeal plates don’t fall out. www.atvworldmag.com
5
6
Pull the hub/rotor assembly from spindle. Remove spindle carrier from the outer end of axle. You can leave carrier attached to trailing arm and swing the trailing arm out far enough to release the axle end. With some shocks, it will be necessary to unbolt the lower shock mount.
8 7 With the axle completely free of the outer suspension, grab the shaft firmly and pull axle out of the gearcase. You are essentially releasing a compression circlip and will need to use a firm popping/pull method to release the axle from the gearcase.
10
9
Swing the trailing-arm/carrier block onto the axle and slide your wheel hub onto the axle splines. Install the spring washers and hub-nut with your fingers. Replace the brake caliper over the rotor and install/tighten the two mounting bolts. Reinstall the two radius rods with their mounting bolts and tighten them properly. www.atvworldmag.com
11
If you’re doing a front axle, it is basically the same process. You will need to remove one ball joint from the spindle, and then unbolt the tie rod end from spindle. This will give you the slack needed to pull spindle far enough out to pull the CV end out of carrier. If your axle is completely destroyed and all you have is a stub in the gearcase, then you won’t have an axle to pull by. Start by grabbing the lip of stub with the largest pair of vise grips available, and then try pulling, wiggling and more pulling. If need be, have a helper apply outward pressure on the vise grips, or with a firm grip, work a pry-bar, tire iron, or large, flat blade screwdriver behind the sub to leverage against it. This is an extremely cramped area, so getting the proper angle is a bit difficult. We remove the CV Speed sensor to avoid breaking it with the pry-bar.
With the old axle removed, it’s time to install the new one. Ensure that your new CV has the compression clip installed on the inner spline groove. Line up the CV as straight as possible, and pop it into the gearcase with a solid pop. If you can’t get it in, try a rubber dead-blow against the outer end of CV, but make sure that everything is held perfectly straight.
IF your doing a front CV, you will just be reassembling the front suspension in reverse of how you took it apart. Install axle into spindle, reattach the spindle to the ball joints, attach the tie rod end, and install hub, brake caliper and wheel. Tighten and torque all hardware to specs.
12
Reinstall the wheel and lower the car onto the ground before torqueing the axle/hub nut and lug nuts. Install a new cotter pin, securing the hub nut to the axle.

YAMAHA’S MOST CAPABLE OFF-ROAD RECREATION SIDE-BY-SIDE YET BY NICK NELSON
We
recently returned from a midweek trip to the Brimstone Recreation ATV Park in Huntsville, TN. The nineteen thousand acre park is located in the heart of Appalachia, and plays host to two of the biggest ATV festivals or events found anywhere. Instead of crowds and people watching, Yamaha had brought us out to enjoy the 300 miles of incredibly technical Brimstone trails to ourselves. The invite was to experience Yamaha’s brand new Wolverine R-Spec, and we weren’t about to miss an opportunity to drive the best performing Yamaha SxS to date.

Upon landing in Knoxville, TN we were greeted with looming thunderheads, and a 100% chance of rain forecasted for our ride day. Luckily, the Yamaha guys had already been busy shooting a catalog of great photos in preparation for the rain. Some brought rain gear and others loaded up on trash bags, but none of us were going to miss our opportunity in the Wolverine. Riding in the mud can be a lot of fun, especially when they’re not your machines to clean up at the end of the day. The all-new Wolverine R-Spec aims to set the new standard in off-road capability and class leading comfort. Built for hunting, exploring and all around off-road adventure. The Wolverine R-Spec features an all-new, super nimble chassis with a compact design, look and feel to it. Comfortable seating for two is combined
with a near perfect blend of suspension, handling, and the ability to traverse the roughest terrain you can imagine. The comfortable, automotive style cab features soft, supportive and secure high-back seats, 3-point belts and is followed by a super tough, injection-molded composite, fixed-position bed. Ready to haul whatever you might need along the trail, a modular design allows the tailgate to be moved forward and back to cater to specific loads. Yamaha also gave the 135 kg capacity Wolverine bed, six heavy-duty steel tie-down hooks that attach directly to the frame. No more worrying about where to safely ratchet-down those heavier loads. With probably the nicest bed in the industry, Yamaha’s outstanding fit and finish doesn’t stop there. A heavy-duty plastic roof and doors with quality two-

toughest, most technical terrain imaginable. The Wolverines engine is fed by a high volume air intake that’s tucked up under the hood, out of the elements. All this air is filtered with a large serviceable foam filter, located beneath the center console with tool-less access. Yamaha’s most advanced 700 class engine ever is mated to the super durable Ultramatic fully automatic transmission and the super simple On-Command four wheel drive system. Yamaha’s Ultramatic CVT uses a clutch within the centrifugal clutch to maintain constant tension and eliminate belt slip. Two wheel drive, four wheel limited slip, or four wheel differential lock can be accessed by merely twisting the dash mounted dial. Wolverine’s differential lock literally claws for traction, and can

conquer the nastiest of trails. While in four wheel drive or diff lock, a one-way sprag clutch provides the industry’s most natural, all wheel engine braking, and eliminates the freewheeling found in some of the competitor’s models. By design, differential lock can make technical steering difficult, but Yamaha’s speed sensitive, electric power steering makes it almost effortless. At higher speeds you might not even really notice Yamaha’s EPS, but it is amazingly effective at lower speeds, while carrying a load, or in diff. lock. The other obvious EPS advantage is damping away any negative feedback from the steering wheel, when bouncing tires off rocks and other trail obstacles. EPS isn’t the only smooth riding trick up Yamaha’s sleeve. The Wolverine gets a

new longer travel, Wide Arc suspension platform, a full length steel skid plate and an under chassis design, sloping up from center to drastically improve clearance on any and all trail obstacles. Front and rear approach and departure angles are angled like the sides on the Wolverine. This tapered bottom design drastically reduces potential contact on tighter trails and rough terrain. With the wide-arc suspension, the Wolverine’s impressive 300mm of ground clearance is able to carry almost all the way out to the wheels. The narrow chassis, full body steel skid plates glide over obstacles and feature well placed drain holes for coolant, gear and engine oil to ease maintenance and vehicle service. The Wolverine’s “Best ever Yamaha UTV” suspension features fully adjustable, piggyback KYB shocks with 246mm of travel up front and 269mm in the rear. The high-end shocks feature adjustable hi and lo speed compression, rebound, and threaded preload. The sides of the Wolverine are designed for clearance and protection as well. While the cab sits slightly inside the parameter of the wheels, Yamaha added an ingenious, heavy duty steel, flared “deflector” to protect the rear wheels from impact with trees or other trail obstacles. Custom sized Maxxis Bighorn 2.0’s were developed specifically for the Wolverine to provide optimum traction, comfort and handling. Yamaha uses dual piston, hydraulic front and rear brakes for strong, predictable braking power, and the completely sealed wet parking brake design will be virtually maintenance free for the life of the vehicle. While not designed specifically as a work vehicle, the Wolverine can still tow up to 680 kg with its included standard 2” receiver style hitch.

RIDE TIME The Yamaha guys couldn’t wait for us to get behind the wheel, and we couldn’t either. A steady drizzle, complimented by the occasional downpour turned the entire trail system to mush. We were immediately appreciative of the included plastic roof. As there wasn’t any wind, it kept you really dry when stopped and the molded-in edge gutters kept the run off from hitting you as well. The side doors keep the mud off your legs, and our units were equipped with the accessory OverFenders that really kept the flying mud to a minimum as well. Smashing around the already technical trails in a rainstorm really showcases the incredible traction capabilities of the Wolverine. The linear Yamaha power combined with the Ultramatic’s smooth clutch engagement really helps the Wolverine to propel forward, rather than just spinning the tires profusely. We found that the limited slip 4wd would go up against just about anything, even in the mud, if you were willing to hit it hard enough. But that’s where the diff. lock comes in With diff lock, you don’t have to hammer into nasty terrain or obstacles. It is easily engaged, and the Wolverine will climb slowly and controllably, up just
about anything you point it at. Coming back down is a similar situation. Sure, with aggressive driving you can get down a steep nasty hill very quickly, but you don’t have to. The 4 wheel engine braking capability in diff. lock causes the Wolverine to crawl down the steepest terrain imaginable. On an extremely muddy and steep descent, we did notice that you need to pay special attention to keeping the engine braking from causing a slide, but it was still probably the safest bet to getting to the bottom. On our super wet trail ride, we
happened upon another perfect test-bed for the wide-arc a-arms and the full length, steel skid. As we crested a hill for descent, the trail turned into two very deep, downhill ruts with water running down them. The spacing was about exactly the Wolverine’s track width, and the entire pack of UTVs slid controllably down the hill for 100 yards or so, before gaining traction again. The full under skid kept drag to a minimum, and the arched aarms kept the suspension components from hanging up as well. We broke for lunch, and then the rain

impress anyone in the recreational UTV market, and hunters are going to love it as well. We can’t wait for Yamaha to bring us the sport performance model of this quality, but until then the Wolverine is going to do just fine.
2016 YAMAHA WOLVERINE R-SPEC EPS took a breather for most of our afternoon ride. On higher speed trails, the Wolverine motor appears to have a decent amount mid-range power, but overall top end speed or HP felt a little less than impressive. Probably closer to what you would expect from a 700cc single cylinder machine of this size. While it seems a little lackluster on the top end of things, overall the Wolverine power proved outstanding in the technical terrain stuff, and never skipped a beat when leaning on it to climb the steepest of hills. We found a solid creek “river” crossing for some photos and to check out the water protection. We could bomb the Wolverine through 16-20 inches of water while barely getting wet; that is until you hit it fast enough to come over the hood and into the cab. That move leaves you on the cold side of things, and wishing for a cab heater on the ride back to camp. A bunch of the test units were equipped with the accessory folding windshield. When picking units in the
morning, it seemed like a good idea for the mud, but in reality they were only helpful for a couple of miles before being completely covered in goop. The windshield folds forward and securely locks into brackets on the hood when not in use, and that was quickly the case with everyone who had gotten one. We’re sure the windshield will be great for light rain, snow, or cold; it just wasn’t a match for the muddy conditions that day. All in all, the Wolverine was a blast to drive in the muddy trails of Brimstone. The nastier, more technical the better; the Wolverine loves a good challenge and it eats muddy climbs for breakfast. The ride is all-day comfortable and the rest of the machine is built to last all day long as well. Craftsmanship and the overall fit and finish of everything on the Wolverine is top notch; probably the best we’ve seen to date. We know this is just a taste of what’s to come from big blue, and we loved it. The Wolverine is without a doubt, going to

STI Roctane XD Tires
Triumph went with STI’s 30” Roctane tire for their 8 ply rating and extremely durable sidewall. The 30” tire gives the XP additional ground clearance, but also increases the vulnerable sidewall surface area with most tires. The Roctane XD uses a radial carcass for great handling characteristics at higher speeds, regardless of vehicle weight. The Roctane XD also features a specially formulated tread compound for unbelievable tread life and amazing grip on nearly any terrain. $199 each

Axia Alloys Panoramic Rearview Mirror 9
Whether duning or trail riding with your buddies, there is no luxury quite as nice as a rearview mirror that lets you see clearly behind you, without having to constantly stick your head out of cab to check on your group. Many companies have mirror options, but none of them have truly mastered it like Axia Alloys with their 17” panoramic rearview mirror. Some call it the King of all mirrors, but whatever you want to call it, it flat out gets the job done. Axia is known for their trick billet aluminum frame mounting clamps, but TMS opted for prefabricated weldedin bracket mounts as they were building the custom cage. $149

Nothing “wraps” up a custom build like a custom wrap from Gator Wraps. Giving a proper, yet tasteful shout-out to all the build’s sponsors was just the beginning. The carbon looking design flows smoothly throughout the car, and you’d have to really look deeply to even notice where it starts and stops. WORKING FOR A LIVING
GRAVELY ENTERS THE UTILITY SIDE-BY-SIDE MARKET WITH A WORK FIRST ATTITUDE
The
utility UTV market has a new player in the mix, and if work, work, and more work is on your attribute list, the new Gravely Atlas Job Site Vehicle (JSV) could very well end up on top. The new Atlas JSV combines the proven performance and ride attributes of the industry leading Polaris Ranger, with a concise dose of purposebuilt features designed by Gravely.

WORKING FO R A L I V I N G Gravely, which has been under the Ariens' umbrella since the company was acquired in 1982, is well-known within the lawn and tractor industry. With an extensive line of commercial based mowers and accessories, the addition of Gravely was a perfect fit for Ariens, which is highly regarded for its snow throwers, and is known as the “king of snow” within that industry. The introduction of the Gravely Atlas JSV will bolster offerings to their extensive job site customers, and just might lure in a few new ones as well. The heart of the JSV is pure Polaris. Available in both a 1028cc, three cylinder Kohler diesel, producing a torque heavy 24-horsepower, and the 570cc fuel injected Polaris four-stroke putting out 40-horsepower. Both engine options come in both a standard three-passenger, bench seat version called the JSV-3000, as well as a six-passenger crew named the JSV-6000. Approximately 90% of the JSV, including frame, suspension, engine and drivetrain, all comes from Polaris, but it’s the work specific details from Gravely that sets the JSV apart from other utility targeted vehicles. From the outset, one of the key differentiators of the JSV is found head-on, where an all steel, wrap-around bumper and accompanying styled grill, gives the Atlas a tough as nails demeanor. More than just looks, the burly bumper is designed to withstand more than a few bumps and nudges. The bumper also incorporates a center cut-out to accommodate a winch of choice. More of this same, all steel toughness can be found under the vehicle as well, where a full underbody skid plate is fixed to the frame, in case you find the limits of the 10-inches of ground clearance.
The new Gravely Atlas comes in two chassis sizes with seating for three or six. Power is available in 570 Polaris four-stroke, or Kohler three-cylinder diesel offerings.
Gravely has a long and robust history as a lawn and tractor manufacture, and we got a chance to learn more during our time in Brillion by visiting the Ariens museum.

Another key difference found on the Atlas, compared to its Polaris Ranger sibling is the massive, all-steel workbox out back. The MX-18 Job Box is big; big enough in fact to comfortably fit a standard wooden pallet inside (48.2-inches deep x 57-inches wide). Steel from top to bottom, including the sides, the box features four heavyduty tied-downs, a smooth tailgate for minimal resistance when dumping materials, and a standard electric cargo lift. The end result is a box with an industry best, 1,250-pound capacity. The final defining piece of the Atlas is the rear suspension. Dubbed the De Dion rear suspension, the design is unique to the Atlas, and combines components of two different Polaris suspensions into a stout, semi-independent design. While the ride might not be as compliant as a fullyindependent design, in our opinion it does offer a www.atvworldmag.com
While skeptical at first, after sampling both Atlas models we could see both being used for an occasional hunting trip, work around the cabin, or even a Sunday afternoon trail ride.
Powersports isn’t entirely new to Ariens. The company had a brief run in the snowmobile market during the sports heyday of the early 1970s.

better ride than other work-specific vehicles. What’s more, the De Dion suspension is designed to carry a big load, both in the box and on the hitch. The combo platter design minimizes sag, allowing the Atlas to retain much of its ground clearance, even when fully loaded. One look at the specifications of any of the four new vehicles will tell you just how serious Gravely was in the design of the Atlas when it came to getting work done. Any of the four are capable of towing up to 2,000-pounds; yeah that’s right, one big ton. Throw in the Polaris dual-range transmission, on-demand all-wheel drive, and the extensive offerings of custom fit and easy to install accessories including integrated cabs, plows, storage racks, and additional lighting, and you have a strong recipe for job-site success. Our time with the new Atlas JSV was limited to a short afternoon of trails just outside Ariens’ hometown plant in

Inside the cab, you’ll find traditional Polaris controls including a toggle for the standard electric rear cargo box lift.
Perhaps the most unique feature of the Gravely Atlas is the De Dion rear suspension, a combination of two different suspension designs in one. The multi-link coil over rear is mated to a more traditional dual A-arm suspension up front for great handling and huge payload and towing capacity.
Brillion, Wisconsin. Nevertheless, it was enough to get a strong understanding of the true capabilities of the JSV. As one would expect, the vehicle is incredibly stable, given the Polaris DNA and stout, work focused suspension. Controls, cab, ingress, and egress are classic Polaris, and both the 570 four-stroke and threecylinder diesel were strong down-low and relatively quiet. The all-steel rear box and De Dion rear suspension did contribute to a few unwanted rattles and squeaks, and ride compliance over sharp edge objects lacked the more plush attributes of a fullyindependent ride as one might expect. With a top speed of 35-mph, the Atlas
can be more than a work only side-byside; think of it as a work first and second…with the option to expand its boundaries to an occasional hunting trip or cabin weekend ranking third. This added versatility could very well help bolster sales at Gravely dealerships, where traditional lawn and garden and other potential job-site customers can envision a new Atlas in their fleet, beyond the work week. Atlas JSV-3000 models start at $12,999 and the Atlas JSV-6000 crew models start at $14,799. For more information visit www.GravelyAtlas.com
Heavy-duty and work specific features can be found throughout the Atlas including these simple, but effective and fool-proof rear gate latches. 50

handles great, it’s quick off the bottom, yet will run 60-70 mph through the whoops, and can be driven in any terrain. What’s even more impressive is that it can be enjoyed by the whole family, or even four adults at the same time. As you can tell, we are big fans of the XP1K 4, and thought it would make the ultimate desert pre-runner and adventure vehicle. We opted to leave it as stock as possible, while customizing and upgrading the little things that would really improve our experience. With minor bolt-on accessories from Polaris and four other companies, we were able to enjoy pre-running the Baja 500 and 1000 in a vehicle that was as capable as many of the pre-runners that cost closer to sixty or seventy grand. Being able to include the wife and friends in our pre-run was a luxury in itself, compared to the usual routine of riding hundreds of miles alone on my ATV.

Pure Polaris Half Windshield
We have found the half windshield to be a lot more effective in the dust, on higher speed vehicles like the XP 1000. Real world testing has proven dust to circle around a full windshield and directly into the vehicle cab. The Polaris half windshield features an upper lip that is tipped forward to direct dust up and over the rider’s heads. The half windshield is a lifesaver when it’s cold, but it also really helps protect the occupants from annoying air/wind at higher speeds. The impact and shatter resistant .177” polycarbonate windshield mounts securely with four Lock & Ride fasteners, requiring no tools to add or remove it for the weather conditions. $149

The XTR also has an SD card slot for transferring files between the computer or other Lowrance GPSs. $799
As our bed was filled with cooler, we needed organized storage for tools, belts, etc. The Polaris XP 1000 side bags fit the bill perfectly. The super durable bag installs via HD Velcro strapping on either side of the RZR. We opted to run one on each side for extra storage, as our XP would often be a long way from the truck. The bags can be accessed from the outside or inside via separate zippers. The interior features elastic strap tool retention to keep things organized, similar to a good off-road, riding fanny pack. $129

We at ATV World love this time of the year, because it’s when new and shiny products and accessories are introduced to the ATV/UTV market place. From Ramps to Helmets, this Gear’n Up Buyer’s Guide takes you through a list of new and improved products that we know you’re going to want to read about.
CARGO SMART HYBRID RAMP When we come across something innovative and new, we feel it is our obligation to let you know all about it. This bad boy ramp uses an innovative SCurve design that allows for a smoother transition on and off the truck. Just by looking at you can tell, “yup that would work”. The folks at Cargo Smart did not stop at design, they also added a meaty tread design for maximum traction and of course it folds for easy storage and transportation. The Ramps are sold individually with a maximum load capacity of 750lbs per ramp. We got our hands on a set and will let you know in an upcoming issue what we think! Stay Tuned. SUPERTRAC Here is an ingenious idea from our friends at Superclamp. The Supertrac is a quick release tie down that gives you the ability to have anchor points on your trailer that are fully adjustable along the length of the track system. The hook is crafted from durable material and has the ability to be locked for added protection. The track comes in 1, 2 and 4 foot lengths and each kit comes with one deck hook and all the hardware needed to. Pretty cool idea for the guy that is hauling all sorts of stuff in his trailer and is constantly fighting for correct anchor spots. Check out www.superclamp.net for complete details.
NFXS TRANSITION GOGGLES A slightly scaled down, smaller version of Dragon’s top selling NFX frameless goggle, Hence the “s” in the name – yup we are that smart! The NFXs is made for smaller faces or dirt helmets that don’t offer huge eye openings. First the frameless design is what sets these apart. The main benefit is the ability to clean up your goggles after you get a face full of mud because there is no frame for the mud to get jammed in. Secondly the NFXs pictured, feature a transition lens that darkens or lightens depending on the light you are riding in. We have no idea how such wizardly works, but we can tell you that it prevents you from having to pack two sets of goggles if you know your day is going to stretch past sundown. The NFXs also features lens mounted tear off posts that will hold up to 28 tear-offs and a 1.5” silicone-beaded strap. James Bond would be proud to own these goggles, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he already had a pair. For complete details head over to www.gammasales.com

M2 MASK Leave it to the folks over at RZ Mask to never stop innovating. New for this riding season RZ Industries has released the newly designed M2-Mesh Air Filtration Mask with Hepa Filtration. With the lack of precipitation that most of the northern hemisphere received this past winter, the weather people are predicting a really dry summer. What does that mean to us avid riders? Dust man… and lots of it! What sets the M2 apart is the fact it is constructed with lighter materials and its design has increased breath-ability and more size adjustments. Then take the fact that RZ has also added a Hepa Filter that is 99.9% effective at stopping particles that are 0.1 microns or larger. What does all that scientific mambo-jumbo mean? Well deadly coal dust is 3.0 microns big and Anthrax is 1.0 micron big - so ultimately this mask is going to save your life. FLY PATROL JACKET AND PANT Good riding gear seriously makes the difference between a good day and a great day. Sure, a familiar pair of jeans and a yellow rain jacket will work, but it doesn’t hurt to invest in gear that is designed specifically for being “off-road”. The Fly Patrol jacket and pant is just that gear, and trust us, it will not break the piggy bank to buy. The Jacket is made from crazy durable Nylon material with reinforced ballistic nylon panels in key places for extra protection. The Jacket features massive ventilation with the huge two front vents, a full back vent, and removable arms that converts the jacket into a vest when things gets really hot. The sleeves can even be stored in the large rear cargo compartment so converting to vest can happen trailside. The Over-The-Boot pants are constructed with the same heavy-duty nylon material and are designed with removable pant legs that to shorts without having to take off your boot. KOLPIN SIDE MIRROR
You may think this is a small insignificant item that you really don’t need. We beg to differ, and we’ll prove it you. First thing to do, go out and buy this side mirror, it takes one minute to install. Then go out for a day of trail riding and forget that the mirror is there. Then, what we want you do on the next day of riding, is remove the mirror, and head back out with your buddies. Whenever there is a 2 in a product name, we have to investigate, because that must mean it is better than the first version. New from Drift for this season of trail riding is the Stealth 2.0 Camera. Having used a lot of action cameras here at ATV World, we have come to the conclusion the biggest hang up is actually operating the “damn thing” after you have got the camera mounted either to your helmet, bars or goggle strap. This is what sets the Stealth 2.0 aside from the rest. The camera comes with a Bluetooth wrist remote that actually changes color via the built in LED lights behind the buttons so you know exactly what the camera is doing perched up there on your helmet. The Stealth 2.0 has four modes; video, single photo, burst photo and time lapse photo. Each mode had its own unique color LED that matches to the screen of the camera so you know exactly what mode you are in. The wrist band had only two buttons, Stop/Start and Mode change. THRILL OF THE NIGHT efficient, emit few if any detrimental emissions, and thanks to newer designs in terms of tires, suspensions, and power delivery, leave less of an impact on the ground they traverse. Of course, the most important element of minimal disruption remains the driver, and when it comes to hunting and accessing public lands, we go out of our way to minimize the disruptions we may cause to others who choose to enjoy these areas in their own way. My spring trip to the Black Hills illustrated just how versatile today’s off-road vehicles can be. Certainly, hardcore enthusiasts who live to ride trails or race across the desert are well in tune with the high-octane thrill these machines can provide. Yet, on this particular extended weekend, the octane came in the form of remote access and the thrill was encapsulated into those moments of complete silence, before the first Tom called. It was a vivid reminder that the offroad experience can be intoxicating, even when standing still.
T
he lights of Edgemont, South Dakota shimmered in the distance as the first light of dawn was still an hour-plus away. There’s a certain clam and absolute silence that transpires during these early, pre-dawn hours – a time when even the most nocturnal of animals have called it a night. It’s the type of silence that can be deafening. I unzipped my coat slightly and tilted my head skyward, in hopes of hearing a stir of life in the distance. Eventually, the first hues of light began to creep their way above the eastern horizon, and the first whistles of songbirds filtered through the forest. Then there it was…about a half-mile to my right, near the edge of a deep ravine, the distinct gobble of a Merriam turkey. The shrill sound signaled the big Tom was preparing to leave his roost in one of the many Ponderosa Pines that give this unique region of western South Dakota its namesake. I stood motionless for another ten minutes, listening to the Tom gobble. Soon others joined him from different areas of the hills, and I set out towards a clearing near the valley and settled in for a morning of communication with the active Tom, in hopes of luring him towards my awaiting decoys. It was the final day of an annual turkey hunt that I enjoy with friends in what I

consider one of the most beautiful areas of the Midwest. While I failed to bag a Tom this year, our group did experience success, and perhaps more importantly, I recharged my batteries by enjoying three days of hiking and exploring the national forest and surrounding grasslands of the Black Hills. When we first started to hunt this region some twenty years ago, we never ventured too far off the dirt packed forest roads that crisscross the region. The terrain can quickly become incredibly rugged and for the most part impassable, especially if it rains, thereby limiting our hunting range to how far our tired and weary legs could take us as we hiked up and down the hills and rugged rock outcroppings. However, over the past few years, we’ve explored deeper and hunted areas where few, if any other hunters ever roam. Our new “off-the-beaten-path” hunting grounds are the direct result of our newfound hunting partner, a Polaris Ranger. While I’m typically not an advocate of using ATVs or UTVs in the direct pursuit of wild game, the ability of these vehicles to cover rugged terrain with minimal disruption is nothing short of remarkable. The latest side-by-side vehicles from Polaris and others are not only incredibly capable, but they are also equally friendly towards the environment. They are quiet, www.atvworldmag.com

RYAN GREENING SPONSORSHIP AND RACE SUPPORT AT FOX
For the ever-growing FOX Company, things never move too slowly. From the moment Bob Fox built his first prototype AirShox for a Maico dirt bike in 1974 to today, the company never tends to stand still. A constant quest for improved ride and handling is always churning within the company, and the minds of its employees is evident in today’s product offerings. From bicycles and side-by-sides, to off-road trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles, mountain bikes and a whole lot more, FOX is often considered the leader in high performance ride dynamics. We caught up with Ryan Greening, who joined the FOX team in 2010, after spending time racing snowmobiles in the Midwest. Greening is the man who handles race support for FOX snow and dirt athletes, as well as supporting future OEM/FOX projects. Ryan is always on the go it seems, but we slowed him down (along with his dog Lucy) long enough to get his words for this issue’s Last Turn. LAST ATV/UTV RIDE YOU TOOK? On the back of Walker Fowler’s FOXequipped Yamaha YFZ-R 450 during a preseason testing trip in Florida. LAST THING YOU QUESTIONED PUTTING IN YOUR MOUTH? I recently switched to Lara bars for a boost of energy every now and then, and they taste a heck of a lot better than they look! LAST BAND YOU LISTENED TO ON YOUR IPOD/RADIO? I’m more into podcasts and the PulpMX show keeps me up to date on the latest motocross/supercross news. LAST THING YOU RACED? My Giant Anthem Advanced mountain bike, complete with FOX FLOAT forks and FLOAT CTD rear shock. LAST TIME YOU PULLED AN “ALLNIGHTER”? This past winter we had some late nights between wrapping up the snocross season and getting shocks ready for our ATV motocross and cross-country athletes. LAST TIME YOU DROVE OVER 100MPH? Back in the winter of 2013, aboard my Artic-Cat Sno Pro 600 cross-country snowmobile, which comes with FOX suspension from the factory by the wayJ. LAST THING YOU SAW OR HEARD THAT MADE YOU THINK WTF? Check out the video of the Race to the Sky event in New Zealand. There is a quad racing the event with a brake-operated wing system for added downforce in the turns. Awesome! LAST NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE? Back when I was racing snowmobiles in the cross-country series, it seemed like a 70

weekly occurrence. Those buggies are bad fast! LAST TIME YOU WERE INJURED? In the winter of 2014 I tore up my rotator cuff. That’s a humbling injury. Nobody can see it, but you’re in pain. LAST THING YOUR MOTHER ALWAYS TOLD YOU TO DO? Pull over when I get tired driving the rig home from an ATV race. LAST TIME YOU CRASHED? I picked a fight with a couple trees last week while out preparing for the mountain bike racing season…I lost. LAST TIME YOU WERE EMBARRASSED? Last week an unassuming woman blew my doors off while swimming laps. LASTING OFF-ROAD MEMORY? Watching Chris Borich and Walker Fowler take the GNCC ATV championship down to the final corner last year at the Ironman GNCC in Indiana. It was the tightest battle I’ve ever seen, and I would have been ecstatic with either one coming out on top. They are both FOX guys! LAST IDEA, CONCEPT, OR NEW FOX PRODUCT THAT YOU OR FOX HAD THAT MADE YOU SAY…HELL YEAH? Seeing our FLOAT 3 EVOL RC2 front shocks and PODIUM RC2 rear shock on Walsh Racecraft’s Quadzilla LTR 500 twostroke ATV, piloted by Kory Ellis was the coolest thing I’ve seen since I got into ATV racing. What a machine! LAST THING YOU READ? “The Last of the Breed” by Louis L’amour LAST THING YOU HUGGED? My dog, Lucy.
LAST TIME YOU THREW UP? I can’t remember. I nearly did in the pool today, though. LAST NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION YOU DIDN’T KEEP? Two years ago I said I’d get back in shape. This year, I’m making good on it. LAST TIME YOU WERE LOST? Last August while running through the hills of Schwarzenburg, Switzerland. Not a bad place to get lost. LAST THING YOU WOULD POSSIBLY EAT THAT IS LURKING IN THE COMPANY FRIDGE? There is usually some suspect cheese in there that I want nothing to do with. LAST FOX PROJECT YOU WORKED ON THAT YOU WERE TRULY EXCITED ABOUT? Working with all of our OEMs on new products is always exciting - so many cool technologies coming down the pipeline that I can’t talk about. LAST TIME YOU LAUGHED SO HARD YOU NEARLY WET YOUR PANTS? This morning I was watching a video of a pack of stray dogs tearing up a man’s car after he kicked one of the stray dogs away to park his car. Justice served. LAST ATV OR SIDE-BY-SIDE YOU DROVE THAT BLEW YOUR MIND? Well I wasn’t driving it, but the things Kyle Chaney can do with his Can Am Maverick and his FOX 2.5 PODIUM RC2s never ceases to amaze me. The guy has no fear in that car. LAST WORDS OF ADVICE? Whatever you’re doing, have fun. Otherwise, what’s the point?
