Anticipating the Winter Wonderland bench seat, canopy and heater kit. And that’s the way I sold it to my better-half! Everyone is pumped to get the snow rolling; the guys in the office keep taking about getting out on the trails, crushing through the deep stuff on the lake, and heading out to the ice hut on the lake this winter. I can’t wait, and above all, I’ll be able to teach Eric the proper way to do the driveway, and show him one of my favorite pastimes. Hopefully, he’ll enjoy every aspect of it as much as I do. Until next time, I’ll be in the shop behind the bars, making engine sounds with my big guy, waiting for it to snow… And hopefully a lot of it!

truly enjoy a great snowfall. Of course with the snow comes shoveling and plowing, and what better way to enjoy this job than using your ATV, Side-by-Side, or the tracked, eight wheeled beast, also known as an ARGO. Last winter, my son, who was only a year and half old, would lose his mind when I went out plowing. He thought it was the coolest thing watching me rip up and down the driveway, and why wouldn’t he? If my little guy saw a snowflake falling, he would run to the front door, pound on it and call me. It’s good to see one of the very legit selling points of an ATV, Side-by-Side and an ARGO… Especially when you can prove the worth and need of the machine to your better-half. Now that my son Eric is two and a half, I know that he will have his boots and toque on, wanting to fight the snow banks with me. I can’t blame him; at his age it’s the coolest thing. I’m sure that when he runs into his fellow ankle bitters, he’ll be telling everyone how cool he was, plowing snow with his dad. In making my plowing career safer for him, I changed from my ATV to an ARGO when taking on the driveway, which will make it safer and warmer for him with the

NEWS HMF PICKING UP 5.5 HP ON NEW XP TURBO

+

The much anticipated Polaris RZR XP Turbo EPS kicked down the door when it was released in late 2015. Making an incredible 144 ponies with 105 ft-lbs of torque, you might think extracting much more would be pretty difficult. Apparently not for the HP Gurus at HMF Racing as their new Dual Slip On system picks up 5.5 HP and 3 pounds of torque by itself. The system retains the original turbo and downpipe heat shields. What’s even more impressive is the crazy 25HP and 13 ft-lbs. of torque they can gain with adding a custom ECU flash. Their new ECU flash pushes 14-15 PSI of boost and bumps the speed governor to an unheard of 95 mph.

YAMAHA’S 2016 RAPTOR 90 YOUTH ATV AVAILABLE FOR HOLIDAYS

Yamaha’s new 2016 Raptor 90 is an exciting youth ATV for riders starting at 10-years-old and is available now for the holiday season. The entry-level Raptor’s styling and sporty ride is reminiscent of the Raptor 700, but at a size and performance level appropriate for younger riders and budding ATV enthusiasts. The Raptor 90 is a great gift for first-time riders joining the family out on the trails this holiday season. The new Raptor 90’s low-maintenance engine delivers excellent low-to-mid range performance, built to provide younger riders with an easy, confidence-inspiring ride. With Yamaha’s industryleading reliability and durability, parents can also feel comfortable knowing their child is safe. The Raptor 90 mounts an 89.9cc air-cooled 4-stroke SOHC engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) on a newly designed lightweight chassis. The CVT provides seamless acceleration with no need for shifting, and reverse gives young riders more versatility on the trail. With increased power over Yamaha’s previous Raptor 90, the new model provides sporty performance while maintaining a comfortable ride and simple operation. Additional features that help provide increased performance and comfort include new front and rear suspension, new 18-inch tires with lightweight matte black wheels, a plush new seat and wider floorboards. The 2016 Raptor 90 comes in Yamaha Blue/White with a $3,299 MSRP. www.yamaha-motor.ca

This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 a shorter course at more than 800 miles but much more brutal terrain than year’s past. Polaris RZR would go into the race, once again, as the defending champion and reign supreme taking the top five spots in Class 19. The field would see 24 side-by-sides start the race with 10 finishing, including an impressive eight RZRs. Polaris Factory Racers Jagged X in their No. 1932 RZR XP 1000 would enter the race with one point separating them and the other two top teams for the 2015 SCORE Championship. Jagged X would have a great Baja 1000 race staying at or near the lead the entire race. Drivers Brandon Schueler, Keith Redstrom and Blake Van de Loo, along with co-drivers Craig Hein, Jason Speiss and Chad Hummer would pilot the No. 1932 to a second place finish, behind the No. 1971 RZR XP 4 1000 of Terry Hui and Wayne Matlock, to seal their second SCORE Championship in three years. Polaris Factory Racer Justin Lambert in his No. 1908 RZRXP 4 1000 would finish third. The No. 1938 RZR XP 4 1000 of Dan Fresh would finish fourth in his first-ever Baja 1000 race and fifth would go to the No. 1923 RZR XP 1000 piloted by Benjamin Bischoff.

CAN-AM 500 TO HEADLINE NOVEMBER 2016 NASCAR WEEKEND AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

The November 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) will be known as the Can-Am 500, continuing the brand’s expansion into racing sponsorship. The race is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016. “We are thrilled to partner with BRP to present the Can-Am 500 next November,” said PIR President Bryan R. Sperber. “There is a tremendous affinity for outdoor powersports among NASCAR fans, particularly in the desert southwest, that makes this a fantastic fit. The passion, energy and excitement synonymous with the Can-Am brand will be on full display throughout the Can-Am 500 race weekend as the Chase for the Sprint Cup comes to Phoenix.” The Can-Am brand, owned by BRP, manufacturer of world-renowned motorized recreational vehicles and engines, will serve as the title sponsor for the popular race on Veterans’ Day weekend. It will bookend a year of motorsports activity for the powersports leader, as the company will also serve as the title sponsor of the 2016 Can-Am Duel At Daytona on Feb. 18. “This is a great time for BRP to participate in NASCAR when the breadth of the Can-Am offering is growing exponentially. BRP CEO, José Boisjoli, has promised new off-road models every six months and this is a great way to ensure maximum visibility for the Can-Am brand.” With Can-Am ATVs, side-by-side vehicles and Spyder roadsters, BRP is carrying on a long tradition of performance. More than 30 years ago, the world discovered the Can-Am brand through its revolutionary motocross bikes, and its legend and winning spirit live on – with passion and exhilaration. The fall race at PIR has sold out in each of the last five years; and under the new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format, PIR’s semifinal race in the Chase is the last of the Eliminator round Page 2 and will determine the final four drivers that will fight for the championship the following weekend. In order to secure tickets for the Can-Am 500 early, fans can purchase a 2016 NASCAR season ticket, which includes the Good Sam 500 race weekend on March 12-13. Tickets can be purchased by visiting PhoenixRaceway.com or by calling 866-408-RACE (7223).

IT’S BACK! WILD HARE MFG. NOW OFFERS WORLD’S ONLY FULLY HYDRAULIC IMPLEMENT SYSTEM By popular demand, the original hydraulic front-end loader and implement system for ATVs are back on the market with a new name and a new company behind them. Originally sold as ‘The Groundhog’ until 2007, this newer and improved line of ATV accessories is now called the Wild Hare ATV Implement System, available online at wildharemfg.com. The Wild Hare front-end loader and 3-point hitch – complete with a 44” bucket, a 34” pallet fork, a 48” cultivator, and a two-position 57” disc – comprise the largest all-in-one ATV implement system available. Perhaps most importantly, the only fully hydraulic system available. Front and rear hydraulics make the Wild Hare system stronger and safer than other ATV power tools for digging, lifting, hauling, plowing, leveling – and many other jobs that used to require an expensive skid-steer or tractor. The Wild Hare system fits on most ATVs and comes as an all-in-one package, or in exclusive packages for horse

and hobby farm owners, sportsmen/ hunters, country-living enthusiasts and landscapers. The first new Wild Hare orders shipped in April 2015, several months after Wild Hare Manufacturing bought out the product line from Concord Equipment, which sold approximately 600 Groundhogs through retailers across the U.S. before closing due to business issues unrelated to product performance. Satisfied customers have continued to generate inquiries during the system’s seven years off the market. Wild Hare Manufacturing pledges to support customers who bought products from the previous manufacturer. Made of high-strength steel, the Wild Hare system is extremely robust and stable. Double-acting hydraulic cylinders lift 300 pounds up to a height of 60 inches and dig with equal downward pressure – not just gravity like cheaper ATV buckets. A simple toggle switch operates both the loader and 3-point hitch with power from a

12-volt battery, while suspension locks and a rear-mounted hydraulic power pack provide critical balance and stability. The loader or 3-point hitch can be installed in as little as 45 minutes, with attachments changeable in 1 minute. Highly maneuverable in tight spaces, the Wild Hare system enables ATV owners to do landscaping, groundskeeping, stable cleaning, hauling, snow removal and other medium-duty jobs without tearing up their property. With other tools planned for introduction including a blade and post-hole digger, Wild Hare gives ATV owners an implement system they can grow with. The Wild Hare loader is priced at $3,695 alone, and $5,739 with the three-point hydraulic hitch and all other implements, plus shipping. Orders take approximately two to four weeks to arrive. For a video demonstration and more information, go to WildHareMfg.com or “ATV Front Loader” on Facebook.

NEWS POLARIS OFF-ROAD VEHICLES SHINE AT TERRACROSS AND GNCC

In November, Polaris Off-Road Vehicles would take to the Terracross track, at Camp RZR West, in Glamis, Calif, and the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Ironman, in Crawfordsville, Ind for both series’ season finales. Mitch Guthrie Jr. would line his RZR up on the outside of the front row and was able to get the holeshot off the start. After a battle for a couple laps with Branden Sims, Guthrie Jr. was able to break off from the pack and get a sizeable lead. After about 14 laps, he had a 30-second lead and never looked back for his first win of the season. Cole Cottew would come in second and Brandon Schueler in third with Jason Luburgh taking the points championship for the season. Team UXC Racing’s Michael Swift and Kevin Trantham came into the GNCC Ironman claiming 10 of 13 first place finishes in the Pro 4x4 Class. Unfortunately, dominating the podium was not enough to pull out the points championship with the Pro 4x4 Class championship hinged on the results of the last race of the season. Swift would have the chance to win the championship with a win at Ironman. Both he and Trantham would battle hard on their Scrambler 850s in what would be an epic race. At the checkered flag, they’d finish second and third as well as that for the season, an incredible feat for Swift’s second and Trantham’s first year on the Scrambler. The GNCC single-seat class would see 10 ACEs line up, the most entries of the season. Dillon Harper would capture the checkered flag for his first win with Sam Yokley in his North Country Powersports ACE 570 taking second and the championship for the inaugural single-seat season. Team UXC’s Torrey Rush would take third in his first race in an ACE with teammate Marc Spataro finishing fourth. Jesi Stracham would round out the top five taking fifth.

MUD,

SWEAT

&Gears One of the hardest working people at any dealership is the Service Advisor. Here, Service Advisor Lloyd Turbitt of Carlson Sports in North Bay, ON. finalizes an estimate before presenting it to a customer.

The best bet is to research by asking questions to people you know. Then, go to the shop and talk to the Service Advisor, Foreman or Service Manager, and ask direct questions about labour rates and warranties. Ask about technician training and ask if the technicians are licensed. Ask if commissions are paid to mechanics. See if the repair shop you are considering has a website and check out the comment section, or check to see if the business has been reviewed on Google by consumers like yourself. These sites can be suspect though, so don’t rely simply on this resource. Check forums on the web as well. After all is said and done, what does your gut say to you? So you are about to take your ATV to a shop that you have never used before. What processes are in place to ensure this exercise will be the best it can be, and what you should do? My suggestion is to follow the Ontario Consumer Protection Act and the Service Ontario websites. The following is a guideline derived (with excerpts directly taken) from the section in the Consumer Protection Act, relating to motor vehicles going to licensed businesses. The Ontario Law When you take a vehicle in for a repair, your consumer rights are covered under the Consumer Protection Act. It applies to any location that offers motor vehicle repairs including dealerships, general repair or specialty shops.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Being

a Professional Mechanic (or Technician) myself, it has always frustrated me, actually perturbed me when I hear people talk about crooked mechanics, and being ripped off when having their vehicle repaired. And although I am sensitive to these comments, it unfortunately has become a situation that the consumer has to be aware of. I know there are more competent trades’ professionals out there than incompetent, but we all have had bad experiences when purchasing services, whether it is cell phones; computers; grocery stores; RV’s; doctors, or even a “shady mechanic”.

Estimate of Repairs (your most important step) Before you authorize any work, request on a written estimate, or you must agree on a maximum amount you are willing to pay for the repair. (i) If you set a maximum price you are willing to pay for the repair, the final cost charged can’t be higher than that agreed amount. Make sure you understand all aspects of this agreement. This is not my personal choice. (ii) If you get a written estimate, the final cost charged can’t be higher than 10% of the quoted price, unless you agree to it and sign a revised estimate.

atvworld atvworldmag.com

After the repairs have been completed, and the ATV road tested, Service Advisor Lloyd Turbitt goes over the work order with Carlson Sports Administrator Logan Chapman to ensure everything the customer has requested has been completed, before the final invoice is generated.

An estimate must include. (i) your name and address (ii) name, address and contact details of the repair shop (iii) make, model, vehicle identification number (VIN) and license plate number (iv) an exact description of the repairs to be made (v) will new, (OEM or aftermarket) used or reconditioned parts be used (vi) price of the parts (vii) total labour costs (hourly rate, flat rate, or some combination) (viii) total amount to be billed (ix) date the estimate is given and the date after which it no longer applies (x) date when the work and repairs will be completed (xi) it’s a good idea is to include the name of who you were talking to.

What Are The Costs Of An Estimate? Although a repair shop may charge for an estimate, they must tell you how much they will charge for it before providing one to you. A fee for an estimate may include the cost of the time to examine the vehicle, (any disassembly and /or reassembly) and any parts that will be damaged during examination or reassembly that will need to be replaced. But; The fee must be waived if you give permission to repair the vehicle before it is reassembled. If you delay giving permission to begin the repair, the shop can reassemble the vehicle and may charge you for it. If you make agreements on the phone, like giving the repair shop permission to begin the repair, the shop must record it in writing, with the time noted (usually on the work order). For obvious reasons, never sign a blank work order. This allows the shop

to make any repairs they consider necessary for your vehicle, and they can charge you for the work, even if you disagree. The completed invoice for the repair must include: (i) your name and address (ii) name, address and contact information of the repair shop (iii) make, model, vehicle identification number (VIN) and license plate number (iv) the odometer reading when the vehicle was dropped off and when the vehicle is returned (v) list of the parts installed, and if the parts are new, (OEM or aftermarket) used or reconditioned (vi) price of the parts (vii) total cost for the labour and how it was calculated (viii) shop supplies charged to a customer (and not included in normal operating costs) (ix) terms of the warranty provided by the repair shop for each part installed and the labour to install it (x) total amount billed (remember, it can’t be higher than 10% of the estimate) Under the Consumer Protection Act, parts and labour should have a warranty for 90 days or 5,000 km (whichever comes first). Repair facilities can also offer coverage beyond that minimum warranty, which could also be negotiated into the original estimate. Respected repair facilities will want your repeat business, and realize the best advertising is word of mouth. It is in their best interest to do a good job for you. One last piece of advice; when dropping off your machine, do a walk around of your ATV with someone from the repair shop. Note the damage and/or marks. This way both you and the repair shop are aware of damage that is or isn’t there. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 5

GRIZZLIES

“GRIZZLY” ADAMS

The “greatest California mountain man of all time”, James Capen Adams was a wild story all in himself. The real-life Grizzly Adams was an animal collector/trainer and an owner/performer in his own Circus menagerie, as well as later in P.T. Barnum’s shows. The true Wildman was known for catching, taming, and training massive Grizzly bears and any other wild animals he could find. Adams biography was published immediately upon his death and was the central character in a handful of books, TV shows and movies.

GRIZZLY BEARS

The Grizzly or North American brown bear originated from Eurasia, traveling to North America around 50,000 years ago, standing as tall as 10 ft. and weighing up to 1500 lbs. The Grizzlies diet staple of salmon, is typically caught when the fish gather to leap waterfalls. These scary creatures are also known for eating other large mammals like moose, elk, caribou, bison and even black bears.

YAMAHA GRIZZLY ATV

The Raddest of all Yamaha 4x4 ATVs, the Grizzly features plush IRS suspension, a great motor, and better handling than most other vehicles in its class. A true fan favorite, the Grizzly model has stood the test of time with a steady string of upgrades in its quest for ATV perfection.

GRIZZY BOATS

TRACKER’S infamous all-welded, aluminum Jon boats are tough as nails, and ready to hunt, fish, or work on the water. A true, all-purpose utility boat that can take a beating and take you through shallower water than you ever imagined possible.

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

Memphis’ only professional sports team was actually founded in Vancouver, BC. Established alongside the Toronto Raptors as part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada, they joined the NBA in the 95-96 Season, and then moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001.

TIPS & TRICKS

Nick Nelson

1

Billet Differential Sprague Upgrade

Polaris used a weak plastic Sprague bearing in the 2015 model RZR XP1000 and XP1000 4. Under extreme use it will fail, and Black Rhino has the cure. Their billet aluminum Sprague uses the stock rollers and h-clips, and it’s even Cryo-treated for additional strength and resistance to wear. $180 and a couple or hours can have you up and running, but we would even suggest it as preventative maintenance.

Ninjas

2

The super smart Ninja bolts from Walsh Race Craft are an example of simplicity in its finest form. The “Ninja” is simply two swingarm pinch bolts, connected together by a small, welded plate. The simple upgrade allows for a single tool and single hand to be used to adjust the chain on your 450.

Every Little Bit Counts

3

When it comes to the perfect MX set up, every single ounce counts, especially where it’s at. Quad X and WORCS Champion, Davi Haagsma uses a Walsh lowering kit to lower his entire bodywork, fuel tank and radiator, for the lowest possible center of gravity. The kit provides weld-in brackets that lower the radiator more than an inch.

Cooling Containment

4

Keeping a high performance race motor is no easy task. The Sparks Racing radiator fan kit uses a much larger fan and a duct/shroud that encloses the entire rear part of the radiator, for maximum draw.

Instant Leverage Upgrade

5

Top ATV racers have many tricks up their sleeves when it comes to thumb throttle set-up. Almost all of them have to do with looking for a lighter feel that won’t wear out your thumb. Some racers experiment with cut or ground springs, but the simplest trick is adding leverage. Davi simply replaces the stock thumb lever with the longer one from a Honda TRX90.

Clip It To Keep It

6

We’ve all lost or seen someone lose their seat at the track, and we know it’s pretty hard to win races without one. The H&M guys drill the plastic seat pin and then simply secure it with a hitch clip. They also like to add a zip tie loop to pull by, or we’ve even seen extensions made by welding two pins together for a longer handle.

Keep It Clean

7

Mud collecting on your inner wheel can quickly throw your wheels out of balance, and really shake up a high-speed race or ride. Tire-Blocks makes these simple plastic plugs to keep your inner wheel clean and free of vibration causing debris.

“It” Rolls Down Hill

8

It might seem like a no brainer, but after you’ve cleaned all the excessive mud from your ATV or UTV, you need to start your final wash from the top down, like a car. Use gravity to insure all mud and dirt ends up on the ground, not dripping down onto your clean seats or steering wheel.

SCORE OF THE MONTH

Pro-Tec Airbox Lid THE SCORE

Every sport quad on the market is choked up to meet ever-restricting emissions standards. A better flowing exhaust matched up with the proper fuel/air mixture can yield massive performance gains. Removing the stock airbox lid is the quickest way to gain the airflow needed for this, but it also drastically speeds up your air-filter maintenance schedule. On the Honda 450s we fell in love with, and have bragged about the K&N Powerlid as the best of both worlds. Have your cake and eat it too! The Powerlid replaced the restrictive stock lid with a lid made of additional K&N filter material. The pre-filter set up flows unbelievably well and air filter maintenance intervals remain similar to stock. The only complaints we’ve ever heard with the “K&N Lid” was model availability and price point. They’re not available for the newer Yamahas, the LT450R, the KXF, or the CanAm. The other complaint we hear and can reason with is the $180 price tag. The new pre-filtered Moflow airbox lid by PRO-FLO has both these issues covered. They filter and flow way more air than the stock set-up and they’re available for just about every popular sport quad you could think of. The Moflow also retails for a little less than half a power lid as well.

WHAT’S IT MADE OF?

The MoFlow, high flow replacement airbox lid is made from laser cut aluminum, and then anodized black for a long lasting stylish look. The laser cut aluminum lid features a replaceable filter element that is similar to the outerwear pre-filter material that we have seen used for years in many different industries. The material is highly breathable for increased air-flow, and yet water resistant enough to keep your air filter dry in the wettest of conditions.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

First off, we were pumped to find a filter lid available for our YFZR 450. In 2009, my team actually won the Baja 500 on an LT450R that utilized a custom modified airbox that accepted a currently available LTZ400 Powerlid. Pre-filtering the intake was that important to us, and now you have options for a whole bunch more ATV models. The MoFLows filter element also does a great job of blocking water and larger particles of dirt from getting to your air filter, but it will let some of the finer dust into your airbox, whereas a properly oiled and maintained Powerlid will stop everything. While the competition does stop the finer dirt particles, they also tend to clog up with excessive dust that will negatively affect performance. The Moflow however, has more of a self-cleaning ability, with dirt particles shaking or sliding off the surface. Overall, this is a must have for anyone who wants to reap the benefits of opening up their machine with a performance exhaust system. You have to increase airflow, and $80 is a small price to pay when it comes to keeping your air filter and airbox that much cleaner.

WHAT DOES IT FIT?

The Pro-Tec Moflow Airbox Lid is available to fit just about every recent sport ATV. They have models to fit the YZF450R/X, YFZ450, Raptor 700, Raptor 660, Raptor 350, TRX450R/ER, LTR450, LTZ/KFX/DVX400, the KFX450R and the Can-Am DS450. Currently 10% off at $77.36 for the Lid, and $8.96 for the replacement element.

The All-New Polaris General First Look, First Ride, First Impressions ust when you thought the Polaris off-road division had every possible conceivable niche’ of the side-by-side market covered - in marches the all-new General. This five star blend of hard working Ranger and highperformance RZR attributes represents the latest side-by-side from the global off-road giant, and Polaris is betting big that the General will become their new flagship model in the very near future.

POLARIS GENERAL Rolled out to the off-road media masses in mid-November in the mountainous and snow covered country of northern New Mexico, the crew at ATV World had the chance to learn first hand about the new model and ride the newest member of the Polaris family on the same day it was unveiled globally to enthusiasts online. The General will occupy its own territory within the Polaris offroad category; meaning this isn’t a Ranger nor a RZR, (even though it shares many attributes with both) making it a standalone third brand of side-by-sides for the company. According to Polaris, the General will occupy a space for customers who are looking for a vehicle that is more trail friendly than the Ranger, but offers the ability to perform light to medium duty work, something the high-performance RZR is not well suited for. Polaris tells us that in developing the General, their end goal was to build a vehicle designed for 75% play and 25% work. The hard numbers on the specification sheet tells the story quite nicely. Power is big, with a 100-horsepower ProStar 1,000cc twin-cylinder engine rumbling out back, producing plenty of torque and very good acceleration for a vehicle this large. Fourwheel independent suspension travel delivers 12.25-inches up front and just over 13-inches at the rear. With those big travel numbers comes an equally adept ground clearance of 12-inches unloaded, and a still respectable 7.4-inches when loaded. Speaking of loaded…here is where the work side of things comes into play with the new General. A generously proportioned dump box is found at the rear, compete with gas assist and tailgate. With a payload rating of 600-pounds, there is more than enough carrying capacity to satisfy most users. The power and well-sprung suspension also allows the General to tow up to 1,500-pounds. But numbers and specifications aside, there’s plenty more that sets the General apart from both of its siblings. As you saunter up to the new vehicle, the first thing you’ll notice are the standard half-doors. By using profile tubing similar to the Ranger, Polaris engineers and designers crafted a half door that follows and accentuates the lines of the entire vehicle. The doors not only look good on the outside, but the inside touts a finished panel as well. Open the doors and you’re greeted with twin bucket seats and a completely redesigned cab layout. There are the obligatory cup holders and catch trays, along with a center console storage with lid, as well as a new in-line shifter. Unlike the Ranger’s more upright and boxy feel, the General gives you far more comfort while still providing relatively easy access and exit to and from the cab; an important attribute for on the job duties. Once seated, we found the cab to have excellent width, far more than the more tucked and low profile cockpit feel of a RZR. While you’ll find standard Polaris rocker switches for four-wheel drive actuation, (the General lacks an open rear differential option) and headlights, your eye will become instantly attracted to the new analog/digital gauge package. The big and bold gauge allows you to choose between two colors (red and blue) and it’s mounted directly to the tilt steering column, ensuring it

While it might not be a RZR, the General has enough power and suspension to charge trails at crazy speeds with nimble handling. Here, Polaris Off-Road General Manager Tim Blinkhorn “sends it” over a trail roller. Yup, this guy does more than call the shots from behind a desk.

Unseasonable cool weather and an overnight coating of snow made the trails in norther New Mexico a bit more interesting early in the day. With the four-wheel driver button engaged, the General never missed a step.

stays perfectly centered within the upper steering wheel opening, no matter where you position the wheel. There’s no mistaking the Polaris heritage with this vehicle either; the overall design cues and menacing front brow with LED headlights is distinctly Polaris…perhaps even to a fault. As the General attempts to stake out a truly unique space between its more popular siblings, looking like a me-too vehicle could hamper its ability to be recognized as its own machine. According to Polaris Off-Road General Manager Tim Blinkhorn, who was on location for the big roll out, the General not only marks the introduction of a new category of side-by-sides for Polaris, but it could possibly have an impact on their other models as well. “The General stakes out a very clear territory between our hard working Ranger and the performance minded RZR,” said Blinkhorn. “In the future we could possibly push the boundaries further with those two vehicles (Ranger and RZR)…we could possibly look at ways to make the Ranger work harder, or the give the RZR even more performance minded attributes.” While Tim wouldn’t divulge any more information on what the future might hold for other Polaris off-road vehicles, he was clearly excited about the General and its future potential. For 2016, Polaris will offer the new vehicle in three different trim and accessory packages. The base model will feature mold-in color and all the above-mentioned features, as well as Variable Assist Electronic Power steering and standard 27” steel wheels. The next trim level up is the Premium Blue Velocity General, and as the name implies, this variation comes in a brilliant blue paint that is sprayed on versus

All three trim levels of the General come standard with contoured and form fitting half-doors. We loved the automotive style latches both inside and out, and when combined with the profile tubing of the over-structure, we experienced few rattles or squeaks. You can create a full-cab enclosure with accessory upper half doors that include slider windows.

One of our favorite features of the new General had to be the custom sewn seats. They are much wider than a RZR seat and far more comfortable. The driver seat comes standard with a seat slider adjustment.

Unlike the Ranger, the General’s rear box is highly stylized, and in fact, the General as a whole is perhaps the best styled sideby-side in the Polaris stable. The vehicle has a distinct look that flows from headlight to taillight. An oversized gate latch makes dropping the gate easy, and opens up access to a spacious box that is ready to accept a wide range of Polaris accessories.

molded-in and is complemented by matte black, cast aluminum wheels and standard Sport Low Profile Front Bumper and Polaris HD 4,500lb winch. Finally, the top dog in the General chain of command is the Deluxe version which further ups the accessory ante with standard Sport Poly Roof, MTX Premium 8-Speaker Soundbar, Convex Rear View Mirror and premium FOX Podium X 2.0 shocks with the new Quick Switch 3 compression adjustment system. The Deluxe General comes sprayed in sassy orange, black and white scheme. After a day on the rocky and meandering trails in and around Carson National Forest, aboard both the Premium and Deluxe versions, (the base model is slated to hit dealerships in March of 2016) we were more than impressed with the vehicles nimble and sporty edge. While it lacks the sheer travel numbers and added punch of a RZR, we found the General to be more comfortable and better suited for trail riding than its high-performance brother. While we can’t give you first hand intel on the work capabilities of the General just yet, after just one ride, we’d have to say Polaris nailed the 75/25 play/work ratio they were after. This General blends the line between work and play so well that this could very well be the top selling side-by-side in the Polaris arsenal in just a few short years. We hope to get more seat time with the General this spring, when we’ll have a long term test unit in our possession. Until then, here’s a look at the roll-out. A completely redesigned cockpit and dash is a big part of the General’s appeal. Highlights include 23L of integrated storage, center console storage, and multiple 12-volt outlets, including one inside the console storage area. While there are still some rough edges with average fit and finish, we loved the new, in-your-face gauge design and the cab was both spacious and comfortable.

Polaris is coming to market with the General fully-loaded with several accessories. An outfitted General was on hand with a complete cab system that included a heater system, windshield wiper, accessory lights and much more. Now this is going off-road in style! The top mounted sound bar comes standard in the Deluxe version and offers easy to use Bluetooth connectivity.

The Deluxe General touts the latest shock technology from FOX with their Quick Switch 3, easy to adjust compression design. A large dial gives you three simple settings – soft, medium and firm. We’ve experimented with these shocks on our snowmobiles a year ago and love their simple and effective operation. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 5

2016 PIONEER 1000 and 1000-5 The overall look and key features of the previous generations - Pioneer 700 and 700-4 were truly refined and brought to the next level with the Pioneer 1000. While the main feature is probably the super impressive big-bore motor, or the multi-mode transmission, the new 1000 cc Pioneers start with a brand new chassis and suspension system. The most noticeable attribute to this wider chassis is the 3-seat front bench on both the Pioneer 1000 and 1000-5. This new suspension also features more travel than the 700, at 10.5”s up front and 10”s in the rear, compared to 7.9” and 9.1” The suspension system is a semi-typical dual a-arm set up, front and rear with a rear sway bar and coil-over shocks. The five seat model comes factory equipped with “Sachs” selfleveling shocks on the rear. This load leveling shock technology uses hydraulic balance chambers to equalize the load, keeping ride height at the proper level, regardless of the number of passengers or payload. These super trick shocks only take a few strokes to individually adjust to the proper height. Honda invited us to The Resort at Paws Up near Greenough, MT for our first Pioneer 1000 experience. Paws Up is a massive 47,000-acre ranch on the breathtaking Blackfoot River. “The Resort” is an over the top, luxurious ranch with accommodations that are out of this world. Paws Up offered amazing scenery, with not a bad photo backdrop to be found. Equally impressive was the miles upon miles of trail. Speaking of miles of trail, leaving the resort on our first ride had us hammering a few miles worth of high speed gravel roads, followed by some more technical, and perfectly moist forest trails. These high-speed gravel roads and traction plentiful trails offered a great opportunity to really stretch out the Pioneer’s legs and see what this new motor is all about. The really big news compared to the previous Pioneer is its all-new, fuel injected, 999 cc parallel twin engine. The big bore Pioneer features dual 4 valve, Uni-Cam technology heads borrowed from the CRF Motocrossers, and is fed by a 44mm throttle body. The big new motor makes tons of smooth, usable power, without a violent hit anywhere in the power-band. Stabbing the gas leaves it feeling a little mediocre for a 1000 cc mill, but when you get to climbing a long steep grade, you realize just how powerful it really is. Even with a payload of four-five healthy adults, the big-bore Pioneer felt unaffected by elevation or grade. The plush dual a-arm suspension is fitted with load compensating rear shocks that automatically adjust ride height for heavier payloads or additional passengers.

The Pioneer’s transmission is the trickest, most revolutionary setup we’ve yet to experience.

The Pioneer 1000 motor is built to be both smooth and productive, equally ideal for both work and play. The Pioneer 1000 comes with a Honda DCT “Dual Clutch Transmission” type, automatic gearbox combined with four individually selectable drive modes. Options for Turf, 2wd, 4wd, and 4wd Diff-lock modes allow you to control the amount of traction and handling characteristics to suit any job or terrain. We started our ride on the manicured front lawns of the “The Resort”, creating a perfect opportunity to experience Turf mode. If you’re unfamiliar with what Turf mode is, it basically unlocks the rear differential, making it more of a one wheel drive or limited slip, rear drive system. This allows you to drive and turn on grass or other sensitive surfaces without damage. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 5

The Pioneer’s transmission is the trickest, most revolutionary setup we’ve yet to experience. The big Honda features a rocker switch mounted on the dash, that allows the driver to easily switch between (AT) automatic transmission, (MT) manual transmission, and even a sport mode within the AT option. The rocker switch is as simple as it gets to switch modes, and you can even use it on the fly. Driving in Automatic mode is nearly brainless, as it does all the shifting for you and Honda’s mapping and shift patterns were spot on for both the faster ranch roads and slower rocky, rutted trails. The standard mode shift patterns

were perfect for cruising the trails, and the Sport mode will hold the shifts longer for aggressive driving and more extreme terrain. Shifting the manual transmission is done via paddle shifters that are located behind the steering wheel. The left paddle controls downshifting, and up-shifting is handled via the right one. As if having both transmission options wasn’t enough, the Pioneer’s “smart” transmission even merges them by allowing you to automatically override the AT by upshifting or down-shifting with the paddles. This instant override comes in handy when looking for engine braking to slow you down in a hurry or even break the rear end loose for a corner. The other really cool “smart” feature we noticed was in the MT mode. If you are driving in MT and you slow for a stop, the Pioneer will automatically downshift to first gear, leaving you ready to go at will. We also noticed that if we slowed down drastically without shifting or stopping, the Pioneer would select the right gear to match engine RPM. Some of the upper trails were extremely rocky and technical. Driving the Pioneer in Diff-lock

Diff-lock driving comfort, drivability and control is enhanced greatly by the Pioneer’s EPS system that allows you to easily manage the steering wheel and even fights negative feedback. The improved suspension travel and ground clearance was also immediately evident in the rocks. Even the five seat version boasts nearly twelve and a half inches of clearance and was easily maneuvered through multiple rock gardens with a full load of passengers. The self-leveling shocks get the Pioneer back up to proper ride height after the first few bumps in the trail, regardless of whether we had two passengers or four-five.

The five seat deluxe model also comes stock with an outstanding tire and wheel package.

The new Pioneer comes equipped with a few really nice upgrades from the past models. The new stock doors feature clean looking, colormatched exterior panels and a comfortable contour for elbow resting or clearance. The five seat deluxe model also comes stock with an

outstanding tire and wheel package. The 14” alloy wheels are wrapped in Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires, which happen to be one of our favorite tires to be equipped on any UTV. The 27 inch 2.0 tires are extremely lightweight as it is, but like many OEM’s, Honda chooses an even lighter 4 ply version to increase ride comfort. This thinner tire provides a smoother ride, with additional sidewall flex, but it is also less flat resistant. With that said, we did not experience a single flat in our group, and only heard of one during the afternoon free-ride session. The standard model gets a cheaper 12 inch steel wheel and 27” Blackstone Bias ply tires.

Nearly twenty editors spent two full days hammering the new Pioneer, without a single part failure; no broken CV’s, no clutch belts… nothing. The only incident was a complete operator error induced broken tie rod, where somebody clipped a very solid stump at a high rate of speed. The machine is a ton of fun to drive. It’s not a full-on sport performance UTV, but it’s still exciting to drive, and it definitely holds its place at the top of the utility scene. This is a seriously well-built UTV that will undoubtedly stand the test of time. We won’t be surprised to see these still running on ranches, or out on the trail twenty years from now like the legendary Honda three wheelers and ATVs. The Pioneer 1000 is innovative, eye opening, and just an all-around good machine; just what we have come to expect from Honda.

glazzkraft turbo bomber RZR dream build might be influenced by a lot of things, but money was not one of them on this latest Glazzkraft build. With no intention of really racing it, Hector’s customer recently ordered this replica of Alonso Lopez’s Glazzkraft Bomber. If you’re not familiar with West Coast UTV Racing, Alonso’s four seat wheelbase “Bomber” is by far and away, one of the coolest, most over the top, trick looking UTVs in the racing scene. Alonso’s race “Bomber” centers on a four seat, 2015 XP1000, featuring a trick carbon fiber body and Glazzkraft’s Chromoly suspension and chassis.

i

n order to one up the original build, but in no way downplay it, the new Bomber would need to be a Turbo. While the four seat RZR Turbo was not available, Glazzkraft really prefers the added wheelbase. The Bomber will only house two seats, but it has plenty of space for accessories and a larger fuel cell. Instead of waiting on its eventual release, Glazzkraft took matters into their own hands and stretched the two seat chassis to four seat dimensions. Glazzkraft stretched the chassis with Chromoly, keeping the exact same four seat suspension dimensions and pivot points, to work with their existing suspension system. The Bomber rolls on top of the line 15 inch OMF Performance NXG2 beadlock wheels, wrapped in 30” Light truck BFG TA’s.

54

These wheels feature removable billet centers and an extremely tough and functional beadlock ring. The light truck tires are extremely durable and provide unreal treadlife that seems to last for years and years for the average customer. At 140 HP in stock form, the Turbo fueled engine was left alone for absolute reliability, but that is just about the only area left alone on this car. Glazzkraft’s CAD/CAM designed front and rear suspension system is 3.5”s wider per side, and built from high strength Chromoly and quality FK heim joints. They used the same 2.5 and 3.0” Internal Bypass KING shocks as the racecar as well. Longer and much stronger Summers Brothers CV axles replace the stockers, and insure that the Bomber can perform at any level for many years to come.

The Glazzkraft “Vortex” fiberglass body kit is getting more and more common, as people realize how obtainable it is, and how really easy it is to mount. With that in mind, Glazzkraft built the same body kit out of 100% carbon fiber to really make it stand out. If you don’t know anything about Carbon Fiber, it is one of the lightest, strongest materials on the planet, and it just plain looks cool to top it off. The Interior was set up with comfort as a priority, but also very similar to the proven race version as well. The custom Carbon Fiber dash was fitted with a Race Pak in the center and Lowrance GPS units for both the driver and codriver. NRG racing seats and Impact 5 points hold the passenger in comfortably and safely, and high quality aircraft toggle switches and a Momo steering wheel finish up the functional interior. Glazzkraft also wanted the Turbo Bomber to be as functional at night as it was in the day. The Baja race version lights up the night with a big light bar up top, and a handful of pod lights down low on the bumper. Glazzkraft turned to Baja Designs for a 40” Onyx lightbar and five of their Squadron Pro pod lights. These LED lights literally turn night into day, and are as indestructible as you could possibly imagine. This Baja Designs lighting set up allows for the same speed and confidence during any night ride as you would have during the day. With a full, top of the line “race ready” build as the order, Glazzkraft also outfitted the Turbo Bomber with internal and external fire extinguishers, a HOLZ rear sway bar, and a multitude of other higher end, race-worthy accessories. Finished product on this build is about as cool as it gets. Having a race quality, race worthy build from the best in the business, surely makes a statement, especially when it’s used purely for pleasure. This build really got us thinking; look for our next over the top, Glazzkraft build to have a little bit of ATV World flair!

outed by Yamaha as “The World’s First Pure Sport Side by Side”, the all new YXZ1000R actually lays claim to a handful of SxS firsts. The first full sport, Japanese UTV is also the first UTV to introduce a manual transmission and a Triple Cylinder engine. In the wake of the groundbreaking Rhino and many years of development, the all new, Pure Sport Yamaha YXZ1000R is truly in a class of its own.

atvworld atvworldmag.com

We’ve all been expecting “it”, but we just never really new what “it” was. The YXZ1000R is going to blow minds and really raise the bar for pure performance and racing SxS’s. Yamaha had four vehicle attributes they were looking for in the YXZ; durability/reliability, suspension/comfort, engine performance, and to be able to cover challenging terrain at speed. MAKING IT RUN

The new triple cylinder YXZ1000R engine is built for excitement, with a previously unheard of 10,500 RPM redline, and the highest HP of any naturally aspirated UTV engine. The high revving triple was also designed for smooth power delivery, high torque, and Yamaha durability. The YXZ triple is comprised of ceramic coated, cast aluminum cylinders, with 80mm forged pistons and connecting rods. It also features a single axis counterbalance and an Anti-Vibration bolt in the head. The Dry sump design maintains oil flow at any angle, so the engine can be mounted low in the chassis for superior weight balance. The high-tech engine is fed by triple 41mm throttle bodies, and it gets plenty of clean air from a dual element air box set up. The YXZ is the first UTV to ever come with a manual transmission, but not just any old transmission. Yamaha gave the YXZ a Sequential Shift 5-Speed Manual, w/Reverse. Yamaha opted for the 5-Speed manual over the typical CVT for multiple reasons. First and foremost is the overall exciting driving experience of being connected to every shift, and the manual is also more efficient and durable with the higher HP. The transmission/ clutch is completely separate from the motor, but actually very similar to a motorcycle or ATV with a basket, 11 friction plates and 10 steels.

MAKING IT HANDLE

Looking for what Yamaha calls Pure Sport Terrain-ability, they started by giving it 13” of ground clearance, even with the slightly smaller than industry standard, 27” Maxxis 2.0 tires. The radial tires provide precise steering and maximize traction. The drive system gets Yamaha’s On-Command 4wd system with simple knobs that access 2wd, 4wd and Diff Lock. The front Diff features a Torque Limiter, which is basically an internal clutch pack to protect components from High Spike Loads. Industry standard 4 wheel hydraulic disc brakes will stop it in a hurry. The Pure Sport Suspension is designed for comfort, bottoming resistance and confidence at speed. The suspension system is designed for minimal camber change throughout the stroke, and controlled bump steer with EPS to soak up any possible negative feedback. The 16/17 inches of wheel travel is controlled by “real deal”, fully adjustable, FOX 2.5” Podium RC2 shocks. The RC2’s feature bottom out cups with position sensitive compression damping that prevents harsh bottoming. Yamaha’s trick suspension design also uses a progressive leverage ratio and Anti-Sway Bars for “flat” handling. The rear suspension system uses a rearward stroke to absorb impact and promote straight line tracking, similar to the way that sport ATV front ends feature a slight kick up.

The high revving triple was also designed for smooth power delivery

The YXZ features an ATV like spindle and brake set-up with dual piston, hydraulic brake calipers on all four corners.

THE BIG QUESTION WHATS IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Yamaha invited us to come experience the YXZ for the first time in the massive sand dunes of Glamis. The release was in early late September, so with the exception of expecting extreme heat, we were all very excited at our first chance to drive the machine we’d been waiting so long for. Arriving into a campsite full of about twenty long travel; rip-ready; high horsepower; manual transmission;

Japanese quality sport Side by Sides was a treat in itself. All the machines that were waiting for us were Special Edition models with the 60th Anniversary Graphic and true beadlock wheels; there wasn’t a person in camp that wasn’t excited for this. Shifting is lot like a high-end race car, with a floor mounted clutch pedal and a dash mounted shifter. The sequential pattern is very fun when you’re driving, but it takes a little getting used to. When

atvworld atvworldmag.com

you need to drop a few gears in a hurry for an immediate terrain change or transition, you’ll find that you have to quickly go through each individual gear to get back to first or second, for the base of a steep dune transition or other obstacle. As you quickly figure out the shifting, you will realize how fast the screaming motor really is. It begs to be hammered on, red-lining at 10,500 RPM, and not even looking for a shift before 9K. The motor feels fast, even when short shifting, because you don’t realize that you’re leaving an extra 2,500 or so RPM on the plate. When you realize that it can be revved to 10 grand, it gets even better. After a morning in the dunes, we determined that around 8,000 RPM is

really the sweet spot, as long as you get past it once in a while. The suspension is on point as well. Stock specs are really good, and you can quickly tailor the fully adjustable RC2s to your liking. Overall, it feels lower and more stable than most any other UTV

yet. It stays flat in the corners and is really confidence inspiring when laying it into a corner, harder than you would on any other stock machine. Jumping is predictable and really fun as well, but we did find the bumper/skid to dig in a few times on nose heavy landings.

As you quickly figure out the shifting, you will realize how fast the screaming motor really is. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 4

atvworld atvworldmag.com

At the end of the day, the YXZ proved to be a great machine. With a whole day of dune riding in extreme heat, there wasn’t one mechanical problem. This is honestly what we expected from Yamaha, and why we couldn’t wait to see what they were bringing to the table. The manual transmission proved to be a blast to drive; it’s super hands-on and really intuitive. After a whole day in the dunes, I will also have to say that constant

The YXZ’s trick intake system features a dual filter system with both a foam and paper element.

62

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 5

shifting does take a little bit of a toll on you. While we couldn’t wait for manual shifting, the more traditional CVTs do make pretty good use of the available power brainlessly. Being a racer, I wanted the hands on, constant shifting, but I think that a little more relaxed owner might want to try it out and make sure that it’s not overwhelming. The motor makes incredible power in the mid to top, but you have to remember that it’s ripping between 6,000-10,500 RPM, and if a steep dune transition requires you to drop below that, you’re gonna have to

The YXZ’s hood is drastically sloped down for a less obstructed view of the terrain that is directly in front of you.

be shifting to stay in the meat. The only other slightly negative thing we noticed was a vibration at under 5K, and quite a bit of heat on the floorboards. With that said, it was pushing 90 degrees in the middle of the day, and we have yet to drove this beast on the hardpack dirt. Overall, we are pretty pumped that it’s here! It’s an amazing machine with a unique driver connected drive to it. Yamaha’s fit and finish, attention to detail, and down right durability should quickly put all the other manufactures on their A-game to stay competitive.

Molded cup holders will come in handy for those long afternoon rides.

THE ALL-NEW DEFENDER IS CAN-AM’S FIRST FULL-FLEDGED, NO

HOLDS BARRED ENTRY INTO THE UTILITY-RECREATIONAL SIDE-BY-SIDE MARKET.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 5

67

atvworld atvworldmag.com

If you read through our first look story last month, you already have a good idea of how serious they really are. The Defender is a three seat, high payload workhorse that aims to really bridge the gap between work and play. Can-Am engineers have spent the last three years developing the Defender line from the ground up to be Tough, Capable, and Clever. Aimed directly at machines like the Ranger XP 900 and Honda’s Pioneer, the Defender’s completely new, model specific chassis is mated with either Rotax HD8 or HD10 V-Twin engines. This truly recreational work “market” or “segment“ has been left fairly unchallenged for many years, and the Defender aims to shake things up with a handful of innovative ideas.

Chassis

To begin with, the Can-Am chassis utilizes very special high-strength, low alloy steel for incredible strength with minimal weight. The main part of the Defender’s cage uses a type of channeled or “profile tubing” to make for super simple mounting of accessory doors and windows. The rolled in channel is used for locating on the ROPS cage, where you

68

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 5

would mount a front or rear windshield or doors. We noticed it to be very similar to the recent Polaris Ranger XP cage, and the Can-Am guys were quick to point out that they had missed the boat as to hitting the market first with it. Whoever really came up with the design first is irrelevant at this point, but we really liked it on the Polaris, and it seems to work equally as well on the Defender. A great all-around performing suspension system is another important factor to both work and play. Like most modern UTVs, the Defender’s front end gets a pretty standard looking, dual A-arm set-up and the rear gets a modified dual A-arm type set-up as well. This set-up provides a plush, controllable ride when driven aggressively, and an incredible payload rating when it comes to the “business” side of things. The Defender’s suspension system provides 10 inches of travel, 11 inches of ground clearance, and easy to maintain grease zerks at every pivot point.

Engine & Tranny

When it comes to powering the Defender, Can-Am leveraged its proven V-Twin Rotax engine and recalibrated it for true Heavy Duty performance. Setting the new standard for low RPM torque and power, the HD10 is said to produce 20%

more torque than its nearest competitor. The 1000cc HD10 puts down 72 hp (61 ft-lb torque) and the 800cc HD8 leads its class at 50 hp (50 ft-lb torque). CanAm engines were completely reworked, in search of every possible ounce of additional torque vs. the typically desired top speed. Can-Am’s completely new PRO-TORQ transmission was developed to smoothly, quickly and reliably deliver the torque needed for the extreme hauling and heavy payloads that will be expected of the Defender. The new Electronic Drive Belt protection system alerts the driver when low gear is needed, and will even temporarily disable the vehicle until the proper gear range is selected. A hill descent mode is present for effortlessly creeping down steep hills or slopes.

Form & Function

You have to get up close and personal with the Defender to see how innovative and well designed it really is. Body design was heavily influenced by ergonomics and details like sight lines, rather than just looking for an exciting or stylish body. The hood, while it almost looks short at first glance, actually slopes down out of sight for optimal view of the ground in front of you. The cab features tons of intuitive storage including a removable glove box / tool box that you can actually remove and take with you for trail-side repairs etc. Additional storage can also be found under the bench seat, with room for hiding a massive accessory storage container. We also immediately noticed that all of the dash mounted controls, switches, etc. were easy to reach and operate. The Defender’s massive composite dump box screams workhorse, and internal framework makes it one of the toughest we’ve seen yet. The sturdy tailgate is even said to have no problem holding an average adult male. Bed divider slots are molded into the bed to accept handy plywood dividers, and four super smart, recessed bucket retainers will keep your five gallon buckets from sliding around.

The high strength, low allow chassis is lightweight and features profile tubing for mounting window’s and other enclosure accessories.

What’s It Like To Drive?

We got to drive the Defender at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge in Nebo, IL. The 1200 acres of trails ranged from basic gravel roads to creek crossings, to tougher, obstacle filled climbs and descents. Right off the bat, you realize the Defender is extremely quick for its intended market or class, especially the 1000cc HD10. The Defender’s power really comes on strong, right off the bottom, and it’s impressive all the way through. We found both machines had plenty of power to easily conquer any of the trail system’s available hill-climbs, and the HD10 even felt like it was gaining speed on the way up. Clutching is top notch as well, with predictable engine braking and butter smooth shifting. The engine and clutch have really been designed for low end, working performance, but they still provide excitable acceleration and a fun all around driving experience. Power steering feedback and settings were also set up for work, but felt equally impressive on the trail.

Can-Am’s proven Rotax engine has been modified and tuned to deliver outstanding low end torque and extremely low maintenance requirements.

Impressive Maintenance Schedule

We all know the kind of neglect most farm machines will see in their lifetime. The recreational utility market is also comprised of many lesser experienced users and owners. With this in mind, Can-Am engineered the Defenders to make ownership as easy as possible with the most lax maintenance schedule in the industry. Can-Am engineers claim to have scrapped the entire break–in schedule with zero required maintenance for 3000km or 200 hours? This seems like a ridiculously long time, but CanAm’s engineers swore to it, and are currently backing it up with an unheard of 36-month limited warranty.

2016 Can-Am Defender HD8 & HD10 Specs:

What To Improve On

While the all-new Defender is definitely a great machine and it felt very refined in many ways, we did notice a few mention worthy shortcomings. There were two different lower seat bases between the base model and the XT. We noticed the foam density in the cheaper model to be overly soft and a little insufficient. After a few hours on the trail, you were really feeling the bottom of the pan. They also lacked any real bolstering to help keep your butt planted where you wanted it. Can-Am guys did mention that some of the models were prototypes, but they were also due for dealer delivery very shortly. Another area of improvement could be the seatbelts. Different height drivers will appreciate the belt’s new, adjustable draw point to avoid neck chafe, but we did really notice a tendency to lock up and tighten on the waistband. A final little complaint was the incab storage shelf that needs some sort of a gate or a better angle to keep your belongings in it, and not dumped on the floorboard.

Final Thoughts

This is going to be a great machine for anyone looking to work, play, hunt, etc. with the same UTV. The incredible work capability is going to be hard to top with its 1000 lb. box capacity and 2000 lbs. towing ability. The shortcomings in the seat comfort can be avoided with the more equipped XT models, or you might find yourself adding another layer of foam for those long days in the saddle. The Can-Am Defender is most definitely innovative and exhibits many automotive or truck like qualities.

Breaking The Ice

If

it makes noise with gas, I’m all about it… at least that’s what I tell people who ask me what I like to do in my “spare time”. Of course, eventually the conversation leads to how my passion is also my job - riding, writing and taking photos of all things powersports related. In addition to my time spent working on ATV World, I also pen plenty of articles for our sister publication On Snow Magazine. With ATVs, side-bysides and snowmobiles all part of the job, there really isn’t a season that comes into play that I don’t have a vehicle to ride or a story to write. Yet, despite all those high-performance vehicles in my shop, I like to escape the powersports world from time to time and dabble in another passion…ice fishing. Now I’m not a “super angler” by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve got plenty of friends who fit that bill with containers brimming with lures, all sorts of electronic gadgets, wheel houses, portable houses, and hundreds of lake maps dotted with magic marker circles and notes of past and potential future “hot spots”. My love for getting out on the big frozen sheets of water, dotting the state

of Minnesota, can be traced back to my father. He was a hard-working man who spent nearly every waking hour farming during the warmer months. In fact, despite growing up between two of the largest and most renowned fishing lakes in the state, we didn’t own a boat, and I can only recall hitting the open water to drop a line a few times during my childhood…we were just too busy. But when the sub-zero temperatures came knocking and the open bays iced over, my father was always one of the first ones to venture out on foot to get his winter fishing fix. As he grew older and free time became more abundant, he had several icehouses at the ready – one on big Lake of the Woods to the north, another on the river bordering Minnesota and Manitoba, and another on Red Lake to the south. There was rarely a day that didn’t go by where he wasn’t holed up in one of those shacks with a line on the water, the AM radio cranking out some classic country, and few cold brews by his side. While I don’t have the time yet to hit the frozen sheets with the frequency he once did, I’m anxiously looking forward to my first trip as the Arctic air spills down from the north. One of the side benefits of ice fishing is the ability to mix in my love for powersports as well. The Polaris Ranger I have in the shop often accompanies me on those early season trips, as it’s the perfect companion for transporting fishing buddies, a portable fish house and all our gear to the local honey holes. I’ve taken the time to accessorize the Ranger with a full cab to shield out the cold; a winch and plow system to clear a

spot on the ice pack, and some additional storage boxes and bags for keeping all of my gear safe and secure. I’m even considering adding a set of tracks to give me greater access to lakes when the snow and slush get deep. Until this past week, I thought I had the Ranger well equipped and ready for the ice season; that was until I attended what is dubbed the largest ice fishing show in North America, located in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. Suddenly, my world opened up to a host of new accessories for ATVs and side-by-sides that I never knew existed. Anglers are gear heads of a different breed, and like powersports fanatics, they are enthralled with gadgets that can make their favorite passion easier, more efficient, or simply more enjoyable. Aside from hole cleaning devices, electronics, all sort of jigs, and hundreds of rolling and pop-up shelters, I discovered several new accessories for my off-road vehicle, specifically geared towards ice fishing. It’s this versatility and exceptionally broad range of uses and users that has made, and will continue to make ATVs and side-by-sides incredibly popular… expanding past the boundaries of the traditional off-road community. While most ATV World readers are focused on performance and speed, there are tens of thousands of others who will look at these vehicles and see a far different off-road world…including the frozen lakes and rivers of their favorite fishing destinations.
