IT’S GOING TO GET BETTER
It’s going to get better…How many times have you told yourself this over the last few weeks? Well it will, and we will beat this! With the recent Covid-19 lockdown, I’ve been holed up like so many others in their homes with their families, waiting

for brighter days. The entire ATV World office is doing the same with their families. While I haven’t been riding the local trails, many choose to still burn some steam and enjoy nature. I have limited my use of my side-by-side to going from my house to the
office, and maybe for a pizza to support the local takeout pizza place. We’ve been following the rules, which has been tough, especially in the powersport market. We’re all trying to stay positive and looking forward to better days. I can’t wait to get back on the trails with my family. It’s something that we have done as a family since we became one. I can’t wait to go back to the familiar trails and restaurants this summer, and we’re still hoping these days will come earlier than ‘they’ say. I can’t wait to get back out there and enjoy some sense of normalcy. I think many will agree with me when I say that I won’t be taking the time spent with my family for granted again. Whether we’re out on the trails, or even just on the couch for a movie night, it’s something that we can do together, and I’m thankful thatl I have them. Here’s to turning it back on, and let’s get out and enjoy our summer!

CAN-AM ADDS PASTRANA TO OFF-ROAD FAMILY One of the biggest names in the powersports community, 17-time X Games medalist, five-time Gravity Game gold medalists and the first to double backflip a motorcycle, extreme athlete Travis Pastrana has been added to a star studded Can-Am off-road family. According to sources, Pastrana and Can-Am have already started to collaborate on a number of projects. We are only speculating but we are guessing that there will be some crazy stunts in the near future. “Can-Am makes the fastest and most durable side-by-side vehicles on the market,” said Pastrana. “After some coaxing by my good friend and the mechanic (Hubert Roland) who is always putting my broken vehicles back together, I gave a Can-Am Maverick X3 a shot on a 1,200-mile New Year’s trip in Baja. I was sold, and I’m happy to now be with a company that’s as excited as I am to push their vehicles to the limit. Since the switch we haven’t changed a single belt or axel at Pastranaland.” Commented Pastrana.

scene it KING OF HAMMERS The week long King Of the Hammers competition keeps getting bigger and better, and this year was no exception. The highly contested UTV class was once again the largest of the week with 131 entries. Finishing rate in the UTV class was way up this year with 33 finishers, compared to less than 10 just a few years back. This speaks mouthfuls to how far these OEM machines have come with durability and performance in the past couple of years.

The top step of the podium is what it’s all about. Texan short course racer Hunter Miller said his awesome car setup made him fast in the desert section, but it was his co-driver Chad Hughes’ flawless guidance in the rocks that got him to the finish line.
The Miller Brothers are quite often each other’s biggest competitors, regardless of what they’re racing.
UTV Staging at KOH is based on Saturday’s ultra-competitive qualifying times.
Womens MX, UTV, and now Trophy truck racer Sara Price is a fan favorite, and a legitimate threat for the win anywhere she goes.
Kawasaki brought out none other than, “The King Of Supercross” Jeremy “Showtime” McGrath to debut the brand new KRX 1000.

Multi-time BITD Champion Phil Blurton built a specific car for this race, and spent 15 days in the Johnson Valley desert pre-running the area. His third place finish rounded off an all Can Am Podium.

Kyle Chaney was in it to win it as well, but had to settle for a hard fought second after rolling off a small cliff in Hunter’s dust.
This is how you don’t want to finish your KOH race. Luckily, the course workers were excited and willing to lend a hand.

Monster Energy’s BJ Baldwin played it cautious on his way to a third place finish in the ever-popular Trophy Truck race.
Regardless of age, notoriety, or stature - if your not willing to get out and spin some wrenches, your not gonna win.

onda proudly unveiled the 2021 Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve and Talon 1000X FOX Live Valve models. Important additions to the Talon family, these two seat side by sides will add an incredible drive experience through “intelligent electronic suspension.” This Live Valve system uses Honda’s proprietary software to automatically adjust to terrain and driving situations for optimal handling, performance and comfort in varying conditions. The FOX Live Valve suspension automatically adjusts compression damping on all four shocks independently of each other, at a rate of up to 16 times per second for minimized body roll and bottoming. This Live Valve system also incorporates a Suspension Mode switch, allowing the driver to choose between Sport or Normal settings to bias the system towards the planned type of driving.

THESE TWO SEAT SIDE BY SIDES WILL ADD AN INCREDIBLE DRIVE EXPERIENCE
atvworld atvworldmag.com
N E W F O R 2021 These two new Fox Live Valve 2-seat Talons will also come equipped with an electronic Launch Mode. Yea, that’s not a typo or a joke, we couldn’t make this up. Honda engineers developed an easy to use system to add exciting starts to your Talon drive experience. A dash mounted button that initiates full throttle acceleration from a dead stop, with faster and more accurate shifts than a human can replicate. The closest comparison would be dumping the clutch off the start line with a manual clutch, but the “dead accurate” computer controlled shifting would be hard to replicate. Launch Mode is as cool as it sounds, and will leave you smiling under you helmet, time and time again.
The Honda team wanted these two new Live Valve Talon models to look as exciting and “Premium” as they truly are. To accomplish this, the super cool looking new Pearl White and Metallic Grey color schemes were complimented with a color matched chassis, frame, and ROPS. These two models both feature a deep blue powder coat finish on not only the roll cage, but also the entire frame, suspension components, even the shock sprigs and included accessory bumpers. The new color matched chassis really grabs your eye and looks every bit as good in person as it does in photos.
COLOR MATCHED FRAME, CHASSIS, AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS GIVE THE LIVE VALVE TALON A SHARP LOOK.
LAUNCH MODE IS NO JOKE!

T H E TA LO N S TO RY The Honda Talon was arguably the most highly anticipated Sport Side by Side to date. Honda’s well earned reputation for durability, reliability and craftsmanship was exactly what many loyal customers were waiting for in the Performance UTV market. The trail friendly, 64” wide Talon 1000X and the 4” wider, longer travel, desert ready Talon 1000R were finally introduced to the public in November, 2018. These first 2-Seat Talon models both shared the same naturally aspirated power-plant, putting 104HP to the crank. Looking purely at specs, this brand new Talon would be very similar in performance to the N/A Polaris RZR XP1000, 38

Maverick X3, or Wildcats that have already been on the market for 4-5 years. These first two Talon models might not have wowed the world with incredible turbo-charged engine performance, but they impressed none the less. Precision handling, drivability, and the incredible build quality we’ve come to expect from Big Red was more than enough to label the new Talon a contender. Backed by years of intensive R&D and durability testing before ever bringing it to market, the Honda Talon’s new 999cc engine, was rubber-mounted and mated to a performance tuned version of their already proven Dual Clutch Transmission.
The DCT eliminates the need for a CVT and the belt issues that come with it. The 3 mode DCT offers 2 fully automatic shifting modes, (Drive & Sport) and a manual option with steering column mounted paddle shifters. In Drive mode, the engine will run at lower RPMs for more relaxed driving, whereas in Sport mode, it holds gears longer for higher RPMs and more aggressive driving. While driving in automatic modes, the driver can still instantly override the auto shift with the paddle shifters, so there’s always power or engine braking on tap. To compliment the Talon’s highly reliable automotive type DCT transmis-

sion, Honda engineers also developed an incredibly durable drive train and oversize cooling system. The Talon gets oversize U-Joints for torsional strength and durability, and the driveshaft components are high-mounted to maximize ground clearance and reduce susceptibility to damage. The cooling system gets an oversize, 8 blade electric fan to compliment the large radiator. Both of these are areas where other manufactures have faltered a little in the past, but Honda engineers claim to have tested and developed under extreme conditions, and over-built to a near zero failure point.Â

COV E R I N G A L L T H E BA S E S The well received introduction of those first Honda Talon two seat models left the industry thirsty for more. By more, they meant things like four seaters and turbo chargers. Honda engineers had already been busy developing their four seat model, and these requests were met quickly with the followup release of two different four seat Talon models. The Turbo option came to light as a factory backed, warrantied, and finance-able aftermarket turbo kit from Jackson Racing. In Fall of 2019, the media was able to get behind the wheel of two brand new Talon 1000X-4 models. The 64” 1000X-4 with FOX Podium QS3 was pretty much what we were all expecting. A 72cm longer wheelbase Talon that excels in high speed handling and features comfortable stadium style seating for four. It was now possible to share the Talon SxS experience with the whole family, and Honda also now had an ideal Desert platform. The second four seat Talon model was expected by most to be a wider, longer travel Talon 1000R-4, but it wasn’t. Instead we were first introduced to the FOX live Valve Suspension on the 64” wide Talon 1000X-4 FOX Live Valve. 40

Developed as a collaboration between FOX, Bosch, and Honda, the Live Valve suspension offered a constantly varying and adjusting ride quality like had never been seen before - plush when needed, and instant compression when needed for abrupt impacts or landings. They features 2.5” bodies with 7/8” shafts for quick response and minimal fade under extreme use. The sensor and computer driven compression system provides near perfect damping over a variety of terrain, and was well received by everyone that experienced it. This Live Valve system has proven itself valuable and effective in nearly every offroading situation. It improves body roll without limiting travel, like no sway bar ever could. All day comfort is achieved with minimal compression at lower speeds, and instant impact resistance keeps you confident at any speed, on any trail. This was the natural progression to the two seat lineup, and surely will be incredible paired with, and tuned for the wider, longer travel Talon 1000R model.
THIS LIVE VALVE SYSTEM HAS PROVEN ITSELF VALUABLE AND EFFECTIVE IN NEARLY EVERY OFFROADING SITUATION. IT IMPROVES BODY ROLL WITHOUT LIMITING TRAVEL LIKE NO SWAY BAR EVER COULD.

rom the outside, it’s clear to see that the Strike 1000 is built for business. On all four corners, you’ll find 27 inch all terrain style tires mounted on blacked out aluminum wheels, then there is a set of huge YIT piggyback shocks in-behind the rolling stock. These shocks are also tuneable with both compression and rebound damping, along with a threaded collar for setting preload. Other accessories that are included with the Strike include a 3500-pound winch mounted low on the front bumper, a windshield that’s easily removable with a clamp system around the roll cage, along with a roof and rear-view mirrors mounted the cage as well. Buried a little deeper in the chassis, the list of standard features grows

with electric power steering, locking rear differential, CVT clutch, and a 976cc EFI V-Twin between the frame rails. There is also the standard compliment of integrated turn signals, horn, emergency flashers, and an automotive style gauge package that pairs the sweep of an analogue tach and speedometer with a digital display, with more information for the driver. These features may seem a little offshore when first encountered, but come in handy for licensing the Strike for the street if required in your area. All in all, the Hisun offers a fully featured vehicle for a considerable cost savings over its domestic competitors. That said, the vehicle still has to perform at the same levels of expectation as compared to its

competitors, despite its lower cost. Here, the Strike 1000 performs within “striking” distance of other brands. From the driver’s seat, the Strike is roomy, with the all the controls well laid out. Personally, I didn’t like the net safety restrains compared to an actual door, but at least the simple seat belt style clip made them easy to use. With the engine running, the EFI fired up quickly and purred with a throaty V-twin sound. Power from the engine is in the 65-horsepower range. A little on the low side for a 1000cc machine, but more than enough to get the job done. The throttle tip-in and clutching are a little clunky at first, but with some time, smooth out nicely with muscle memory. At speed, the Strike has more than enough power to top out above 100kmph in high gear, as well as break the tires loose for a spirited ride at trail speed. Slowing 46

things down, the grip of the Wanda tires balances out nicely with the power for simply cruising or technical riding. I did find myself wanting to shift into low quite often to put a bit more power to the wheels when climbing obstacles. Changing out to more aggressive tires would also mean running in low gear a little more often too, especially in deep mud. Handling wise the Strike performed very well. It was predictable, even though there seemed to be a bit more body roll then I’m used to. The high-end shocks are also adjustable, and changes can be felt as you work the compression and rebound clickers. I did find that multiple clicks were needed, in order to feel a difference in the seat of your pants. However, the complexity of the shocks with so many adjustments may take some trial and error to optimize for novice drivers. I would suggest jotting

down starting points and the changes you make, so if things go pear-shaped you can get back to your initial setup. Another feature I liked was the unlocking rear differential. This machine is fairly wide at 65 inches, so this feature is not only handy for turning around on your front lawn, but also made the machine a little easier to maneuver around in tight terrain. Also assisting the directional changes is an electronic power steering system. Often reserved for more expensive models, the EPS system makes for a light feel in the steering wheel at low speeds. Additional comments from behind the wheel would be that the Strike is a great vehicle for the price. It does fall short when compared to some of the much more expensive domestic offerings, but these shortcomings are only really apparent when you jump out of one of these other brands, (that could be as much as twice the MSRP) back into the Hisun. For the savings that the Strike 1000 offers, I totally forgive it for its slight decrease in all-out performance. In addition, given the return on investment of the Strike 1000, this is a great machine for people just getting into the side by side market. At this price point, the Strike is absolutely a viable option over similarly priced machines in the used market, especially when the Strike is backed up by a 2-year warranty.

hey first did it with ATVs, and Shawn racing his way into the Pro XC1 Class. As popularity was shifting to UTV Racing, they jumped on the UTV bandwagon as well. A decade later, UTV Racing is still growing at an incredible rate, Shawn is still winning races, and Hess Motorsports is well known for building the high quality aftermarket parts that every racer wants to have on their machine. The father and son owned business is well known for their complete in-house race ATV and UTV builds, but even more
so for their amazing machine shop. Literally a one stop shop, they not only race, develop, machine and sell billet UTV/ATV parts, but you can also purchase just about anything from them. You can even have them install and tune for you in-house as well. Elka Shocks to A-Arms, Beadlocks to EFI Tuners, they have a competent team to install anything OffRoad, and even offer in-house engine building services. If that wasn’t enough, they also private label and/ or manufacture billet parts for a handful of other well known UTV and ATV performance parts companies.
Now that you’ve got a little history on these guys, it makes more sense that Shawn would be one of the first guys showing up at the track with a fully built Talon. In an effort to stay ahead of the game, Shawn picked up a new Honda Talon to R&D parts for it as soon as they were hitting the dealer floors. An invite to drive one at the initial press launch a few months prior had given Shawn a mental head-start, as he already new it could benefit from one of their steering quickeners. Drive time and some careful inspection had the internal wheels turning in a few other areas as well. The Hess Motorsports Steering Quickener is one of their best selling, most popular UTV parts, and with good reason. The Hess Quickener can be found on the top racers UTV builds in every form of racing across the globe. The crew at Hess Motorsports tore into the Honda Talon immediately to retrofit and install one for testing. They offer the Quickener in 1.5:1 and 2:1 reduction ratios, depending on the vehicle’s
factory steering ratio and characteristics. Certain UTVs offer both as a personal preference choice. After initial testing they went with a 2:1 ratio, and anyone who likes to drive aggressively will certainly prefer it over the stock steering ratio. The kit fits up perfectly to the stock steering wheel, or you can opt to adapt an ultra trick looking, Hess Steering wheel. The Hess Steering wheel’s included buttons open the doors to a couple of other cool options like the push button shift kit and the addition of launch control, but we’ll get to that in a bit! At some point while testing those initial parts on the Talon, a plan was hatched for a full blown build and race effort. Following up on a pretty successful season racing the Yamaha YXZ, the decision couldn’t have been easy, but they were confident in the machine, and have the means to build anything they think could be improved. Another huge advantage is the solid group of industry sponsors/partners that they work closely with.

With the capability to build just about anything in house, the Hess Motorsports team is extremely picky about who else has a hand in their personal race builds. With that said, the first handoff of the short course Talon build was to none other than Johnny Greaves for the Custom Cage, sick aluminum roof, and a bed delete. Yes that’s the same Greaves Motorsports as in the Monster Energy backed truck team that won Crandon last year, and still puts it down in the UTV classes as well. Pricing is not quite available as of press time, but Hess is making the bungs and other machined pieces for them, and they will be available to the general public sometime soon. (www.johnnygreaves.com) Shawn turned to HMF Engineering for their proven tough, Titan Exhaust system. The oversized 5” stainless steel system cuts 5 pounds, while adding 7.5 HP and 3.8 ft/lbs. of torque. The build also uses color matched HMF Q Equipment, Defender Series front and rear bumpers, and Rock Sliders for protection from any loose cannons on the race course or trail. They are built out of .095” steel tubing for maximum protection with a clean look and minimal weight. (www.hmfracing.com) The Fox Suspension that comes equipped on the Honda Talon is top notch, but as with any suspension setup, it can always be better. This is especially true when it’s fine tuned for what you plan on doing with it. Like a handful of other top racers,
Shawn leaned on Gary Hinkle from GForce Suspension for the ultimate short course set-up, and from watching his Talon on the track, it’s working. (www.gforceracingtechnolgies.com) High speed cornering ability is a huge part of UTV short course racing. Limiting body roll is super critical, but you have to walk a fine line between limiting suspension travel and keeping the suspension acting freely when it needs to. Shawn’s Talon build uses a bolt on Double E Racing sway bar to reduce body roll, and drastically improve high speed cornering ability. The system features an engineered spring steel torsion/spring bar and billet aluminum connection links, with quality heim joints at every pivot point. This fully adjustable set-up can provide the ideal ride in almost every condition. Check them out at (www. doubleeracing.com). Looking for the perfect combination of forward traction, high speed stability and steering precision, Shawn went with a radial construction Maxxis Ceros tire. They opted for a slightly smaller 27” tire for lower CG and stability over the relatively smoother short course type racecourse. The Maxxis tires are fitted on 15x7” Fuel Tech Model D919 Beadlock’s in a nearly stock offset for optimum steering and minimal push. The interior of Shawn’s Talon was kept pretty simple, with the exception of a high quality set of Corbeau race seats and 3”

PRP 5 point harnesses for the ultimate in both safety and comfort. Unlike most UTV race builds, Shawn doesn’t run your typical suspension type seat. Just like in his previous race builds, the Hess Motorsports Talon race car would get composite fiberglass Corbeau FX1 PRO racing seats. These lightweight seats are designed with an emphasis on comfort, performance and safety. Quite possibly the most comfortable race seat you could ever sit in, they are available in three differently sized models which are relative to the users waist size. The FX1 Pro features three different removable pads and is wrapped in black cloth or microsuede. Hess Motorsports makes and sells custom mounting brackets to mount the FX1 into any model Honda Talon. Corbeau FX1 seats are available through Hess Motorsports. The last thing the Hess Motorsports needed to outsource was a communications system. Shawn opted to run Rugged Radio’s Short Course kit with hand held radios, a wired helmet for the driver and headset crew chief. The Rugged kit is similar to what has been used for off-road motorcycles for years, and is incredibly reliable when line of site communication is the norm. This type of hand held kit is an affordable, effective, and convenient option for short course or other types of closed course competition.

The stock front mounted radiator location has proven problematic in just about every type of UTV racing. This is especially true to short course where your in close quarters with other race cars and constantly getting roosted. Dating back to the RZR 800, or even Rhino racing days, watered or wet race courses and chasing down a competitor whose on the gas, could lead to overheating and/or the dreaded limp mode. Mud and roost clogged radiators were inevitable until fabricators started mounting them up behind the driver and passenger headrests. This set up was the only way to go for serious MX, WORCS, Lucas Oil , or other Short Course type racing, and it was just as effective for the mudder crowd. The relocated radiator was a racing “must have”, but it was pretty much reserved for those with well thought out, full custom built race cars. Hess Motorsports changed this thinking a few years back by designing an all inclusive, rear mounted 58

radiator relocation kit. The kits are available for all popular sport UTVs relocating they radiator to the bed, increasing coolant capacity and incorporating dual fans. The kit uses a high quality oversized CBR radiator with aluminum fan shrouds and 2 Spal, high output electric fans. Every Hess radiator relocation kit now also comes with a fan override switch, allowing the driver or co-driver to manually control the fans and running temps. The kit works with stock and aftermarket cages, and is mounted low enough to maintain viewing out of the back of the car. Inside the car Hess Motorsport’s developed bolt-in brackets to mount the Corbeau Seats as low as possible. They also developed and installed a rearview that will bolt into the stock or aftermarket cage. Hess Motorsports relocated the battery on Shawn’s race car, and will be selling a kit for this as well. Trick billet Hess quick release fire extinguisher mounts were

designed and installed as well. They are available for 1 pound and the larger 2.5 pound extinguishers. The 2:1 ratio steering quickener was already installed in the car, so they went with a six bolt steering wheel hub and a flat Hess Motorsports Steering Wheel. This is where the really trick stuff starts happening! The steering wheel hub accepts a button plate for radio controls, horn, etc. Hess Motorsports developed a steering wheel mounted push button shift kit to eliminate the paddle shifters - a pretty trick, but they didn’t stop there. The latest model, Live Valve Talons just recently came out with a feature called Launch Mode. A dash mounted switch that allows for full throttle starts that are similar to dumping the clutch on the start line of a motocross or drag race. The crew at Hess Motorsports figured out how to flash the non Live Valve ECUs to install launch mode, and its operated by a steering wheel button as well.
Launch Mode isn’t the only thing going on with the Hess Motorsports ECU flash. If you run an aftermarket exhaust on the Talon, you will need to do something to modify/compensate the fueling curve. Instead of just using adjusting the fuel via a Dobech or similar EFI tuner, a Hess Motorsports ECU flash offers so mush more. With a one day turnaround at their shop, they can create HP and Torque gains throughout the power curve; optimize ignition timing for 91 octane fuel; raise your rev limit; bump your speed limit to 95 mph; optimize transmission shifting; adjust transmission for different tire sizes; lower the radiator fan on temperatures, and even install the Launch Control mode. They will need to know which exhaust your using, as well as any engine or intake mods. Speaking to engine and intake mods, the Hess Motorsports crew also developed an engine package to make the N/A Talon run with the Turbos. Available as the
exact same kit that they run on Shawn’s race car, it includes Port and Polish on your head, a 5 angle valve job, reface the valves, surface the head, and a Hess Performance camshaft. The kit comes with new OEM gaskets and a ECU flash. There are also options for higher compression CP Racing pistons and machined head studs if you want to run race fuel. The stock Talon R suspension is being retained for now, and has so far proven itself durable and worthy. Since the build was wrapped up and the photoshoot took place, Hess Motorsports has also High Clearance and Straight adjustable Radius Rods. They’re machined from 7075 Aluminum for strength, the uppers are adjustable for camber adjustment and the bottoms are like nothing you’ve seen to date. They developed a bolt together design to speed up and simplify rear axle changes. They have just finished up testing and will be available as of print. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 16 • ISSUE 6

THE TEXPLEX UTV SERIES JUST HAPPENS TO BE IN SHAWN’S HOME STATE OF TEXAS, AND THEY ARE SHOWING UP READY TO COMPETE
We all know a true race build is a work in progress, but as for now the Hess Talon was ready for Shawn to take on the PRO 1000 Non-Turbo Class at TexPlex’s highly contested UTV Race Series. The Texplex TEXAS UTV Racing Series features the largest cash payout in national UTV racing with a guaranteed $110,000 Series Purse, including 40K to the overall series champion in PRO TURBO, and another 40K to PRO NA champion. A previously unheard of amount of cash for racing, these UTVs that have developed from the Yamaha Rhino “Golf Carts” in just 15 short years. The Texplex UTV Series just happens to be in Shawn’s Home state of Texas, and they are showing up ready to compete. More than 150 UTV racers have shown up to the first three rounds at Texplex, looking
for their share of that big purse. The course looks immaculate, with a similar layout to Lucas Oil or CORR type short course races. As expected, Shawn has shown up ready to compete, and managed to put his Talon on the box at all three events so far this year. Crazy impressive with the intense competition, and especially for a brand new machine. Shawn and the crew at Hess Motorsports are more than ready for that top spot on the podium, and are fine tuning the machine to perfection while waiting on that next race. Unfortunately for now, the next round is on hold for the COVID 19 virus, but you’d better believe Shawn will be as ready as ever when the restrictions are lifted, and we can get back to racing!

ur adventure started in Willow Beach with Logan, Brent and me loading up our Suzuki KingQuad 750 and the Yamaha Grizzly, and then heading to Maxxim Motorsports in Barrie to pick up one of CF Moto’s Side-by-Sides - the Z Force 1000. It was a short five hours up the highway from Barrie to Dunlop Lake Lodge where we were meeting Jeff Steenbakkers. Convientley, both trucks pulled in at 6pm when we were greeted by our hosts Tricia and Jess MacDonald (owners of the Dunlop Lake Lodge). If you have never stayed at Dunlop Lake Lodge, we can tell you that as soon as you park your truck, you immediately feel right at home. The rooms at Dunlop Lake are very warm and cozy, complete with Wifi and satellite TV. This really helped us to keep in touch with the office, and we were able to kick back at night to watch a hockey game in our room. Another cool feature that we used a few times a day at the Lodge was

Even though this was our first time here, we immediately felt like family with the home cooked meals that were prepared for us. We spent our first night with Jess and Tricia going over the area and what the Elliot Lake area has to offer off-road enthusiasts like us. It wouldn’t have been right if we left for our first day of riding from Dunlop Lake Lodge without a huge breakfast under the belt. Funny how we eat light breakfasts during the work week, and then when you go away – BOOM. For me, this was the perfect way for us to start our first day of riding, which started off without a hitch; the sun was shining and it was stimulating minus 5 celcius. Needless to say, we wore our snowmobile suits. We left right from the Lodge, and were excited to explore the Elliot Lake area. Elliot Lake is famous in the ATV and Side-by-Side community because it was one of the first towns in Ontario to full-out welcome and allow ATVs and Side-bySides to drive on their roads. We chose to do the “Prospects Run”, which if we had been here a few weeks earlier, it would have been even more stunning with all of the fall colours. The trails were dusted with snow, and frozen puddles were a common sight. Sometimes you forget just how much fun it is to ride at this time of year.

We were having a blast, riding to the town of Elliot Lake for lunch, and once we made our way through some of the obstacles, all we could think about was warming up and eating. We decided to leave the trail and head down the road to miss some of the extra deep water on the trial, and being in the Elliot Lake area, it is completely ATV/Side-by-Side road friendly. After fuelling the ATVs, our lunch stop at the Fireside Classic Grill was right there. Even though we were in our snowmobile gear and the sun was out, there was still a chill riding down the road. Even our server could tell that we were feeling the temperatures, so he sat us next to the fireplace. After lunch, we redressed for the trails 66

and headed back to the Lodge, and to another woodstove. It was a quick ride back as we took the road and making it back for sunset. One of the great qualities of Dunlop Lake Lodge is the live entertainment; every Thursday there, it’s “Open Mic Night”. We were surprised to see Mike, the Lodge’s head chef take the stage with his guitar, and start to take requests from the crowd. Mike isn’t just another guy going to sing karaoke, he’s a trained musician/singer, and did an amazing job keeping us all entertained. Applause all around by the time he finished, then to our surprise, he went back to the kitchen until it closed. After we enjoyed a couple of pops at the bar, we were looking forward to another

meal at the lodge. Good food is a big thing at Dunlop Lake Lodge, and their speacials do not disappoint. The evening’s special was fish ‘n’ chips, and none of us had the willpower to pass on beer battered halibut and fresh cut fries. Needless to say, after this type of day, and the great meals we had, we didn’t make it too far into the evening before our beds were calling. Our second day of riding began the same way the previous day did, with a monster breakfast in the lounge and some itinerary discussion with Jess and Tricia for today’s ride, which gave us some needed insight of where to go and what to take in. One thing for sure was that guests at the Lodge can feel the passion that these two have for the sport, the lodge, and each other. During our entire stay, we always felt like we were at our own home. By the time we left to hit the trails with some of the Elliot Lake ATV Club (ELATV) members, we had a total of 9 ATVs and Side-by-Sides ready to go. Considering the cold weather and the time of year, we were excited to see so many others join us. The ELATV members took us down the collector trail to an old mining road that brought us to a scenic overlook of the town. The views from there were stunning. We couldn’t believe how many lakes there were, and how dense the forest looked from above. We would like to thank the club members for taking us here, since without them, we would never been able to find this special lookout. Our guides kept us moving to ELATV
Trail 3 A.K.A. “Cyr’s Boreal Run” to the Connector Trail, and onto ELATV Trail 2 or “Boardwalk run”. This took us to Elliot Lake Falls which is a must see. The Falls connect Elliot Lake to Quimby Lake, and this area had our favorite scenery on the ride. Even though it was late Fall and most of the leaves were all but gone from the trees, the water rushing over the rocks would stop you in your tracks. Continuing down the “Boardwalk Run” trail takes you along the side of Quimby Lake, and then towards Elliot Lake. The constant changing terrain was amazing, and at times challenging. We were riding on everything from rocks, water/ice, leaves, mud and sand. It was an amazing day on the trails, and before we knew it, we were once again chasing the sundown. On our way back, we visited the Uranium Mining Monument right in the heart of Elliot Lake. Over the years, most of the mining

industry has left Elliot Lake, and we were surprised to learn from the monument that Elliot Lake was once considered the “Uranium Capital of the World”. Waking up on our last day was just as expected. The few inches of snow that fell overnight had changed the complete riding experience. It was so fresh outside that it was comparable to waking up on Christmas morning. Oh, and another monster breakfast was served! The last day was the day that we really went exploring in the back country. Jess, his son Hank, and Art Trudeau from Mukwa Adventures took us to an area off the trail map. You know the type of ride in the woods that you have to know someone that knew someone who heard of a legend type of individual 125 years ago? We left right from the parking lot and headed north. We felt like we went where no man had been before, but clearly Jess, Hank and Art had been there. The snow provided some interesting photos as it blanketed many obstacles on the trail. We can safely say that we got some fun video and pictures. After pushing ourselves and the machines to the limit all morning, we stopped for a trailside cookout for lunch. These guys had clearly thought of everything, but that’s what you come to expect when you stay at Dunlop Lake Lodge - they treat you like family. Ontario’s Algoma Region is a place that I will never forget, and I encourage everyone to check out this area at least once. From the people we met along the way, to the gorgeous landscape and rich history of the region, this is a go-to area for ATV/Sideby-Side riders of all skill levels. Trust us when we say - put this trip on your bucket list! No matter what you are looking for, riding ATVs or snowmobiling, Elliot Lake in Algoma Country has you covered!

hen it comes to our ATV’s and Side-by-Sides, the re is a good percentage of us that thin k nothing of making mo difications to our rides to make them unique or to improve the ir performance. I’ve always enjoyed making changes to vehicles I drive or ride, but I’m also confident in my skills to make these modifications safely. In addition, I’ve also felt that if you don’t have the skills necessary to make the changes you want, there are plenty of shops that will help you achieve your modification goals, so your lack of wrenching skills shouldn’t hold you back! If you can dream it, there is usually a way of making it happen. Our tow vehicles are no different. Just look around the off-road community and the fact many of the vehicles we drive are modified in some way just like our ATV’s and Side-by-Sides. Some of these mods are done out of necessity, such as installing a hitch to tow our trailers. Other mods may be focused on making our rigs stand out in the crowd, like through the addition of bigger wheels and tires or suspension changes. However, making modifications on our vehicles comes with a higher degree of complexity than with our off-road
units. Whenever we decide to modify road going vehicles, we have to be aware of how our changes affect safety and legal requirements. To make things even more complicated, on-road rules and regs change from province to province or state to state, so one of the first steps in making a mod should be trying to find out if the modifications you want to make are legal in your area. Then, you must think about your own mechanical knowledge and skills. You have to know whether or not they are up to the challenge of achieving your modification goals. This is when knowledgeable speciality shops and dealerships can help. These folks are in the business of knowing what’s available, and also what’s legal. In addition, the technicians that work in these shops have the skills to properly install the bits and pieces you want on your vehicle, if your skills are not up to the task.
Recently on an episode of Snowmobiler TV, we did a story about three different classes of trucks to haul three different classes of load requirements. The trucks we used were a Ford Ranger, F-150, and F-250 to represent the typical style of rigs we see in the off-road and snowmobile world; however, each were modified in some way, which is also pretty typical of what we see out in the real world. These modifications were also accomplished two different ways. The Ford F-250 Tremor was technically the most “stock” of the three rigs because its mods were actually done right at the factory, and included a taller front suspension, bigger tires then what’s typical for a 250, and other styling cues to make it stand out. The F-150 and Ranger were modified at the dealership level. Each of these two models started out basically as standard trucks, right off the lot, and modified from that point.
THE FORD F-250 TREMOR, WAS TECHNICALLY THE MOST “STOCK” OF THE THREE RIGS BECAUSE IT’S MODS WERE ACTUALLY DONE RIGHT AT THE FACTORY AND INCLUDED A TALLER FRONT SUSPENSION
These three trucks show off 2 different levels of custom treatments, straight from the factory and from the dealership level. No matter what brand you are loyal to, mods can certainly make your vehicle stand out in a crowd!

atvworld atvworldmag.com
The advantage here is two-fold. First, the modifications have been done within the legal requirements set out by the government, and the modifications were performed by qualified Ford service technicians. Second, the cost of these mods will be rolled into one payment, along with the cost of the vehicle itself. This makes the normally costly modifications a little more affordable. The only caution I would like to remind people of is that sometimes there are some hidden, long-term costs, especially when it comes to replacing bigger, off-road type tires. The big meats come with big costs, so be prepared for that when they wear out. Also, the bigger wheels and tires will probably kill fuel mileage and wear out tie rods and wheel bearing a little faster. But they sure look cool! At the end of the day, modifying our vehicles is a great way to individualize our rides and make them our own. Just remember to be sure that the changes don’t make your vehicle illegal to operate, and that the modifications are done with the skills necessary to ensure they are done properly. Happy wrenching!
THE ONLY CAUTION I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND PEOPLE OF IS SOME HIDDEN LONG TERM COSTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO REPLACING A BIGGER OFF-ROAD TYPE TIRES.
The F-150 was the only truck in our fleet to have a custom exhaust to go along with its other modifications. The MBRP system made the EcoBoost a little more pleasing to the ear.
The aftermarket offers a wide variety of performance enhancing modifications for gas or diesel engines that are either boosted or naturally aspirated, but be aware of how this type of mod can effect your warranty.
