THE
fall is probably my favorite time of the year when it comes to ATVs. There’s always a lot to do, temperatures are comfortable, and it seems that there are more shows, swaps, rides and new model releases. What enthusiast wouldn’t enjoy this time of year the most? The riding in our parts is awesome, with the leaves changing colour, the trails not as busy as the spring, and the cooler temperatures are a refreshing change. It’s a time to get in as many rides as we can before the really cold weather hits. According to the very reliable weather-people, always in the know, “The Farmers Almanac” we’ll be getting more snow in December, January and February than usual across North America, and it’s also going to be much colder this winter. In this issue, you will see scenes from Haydays in Minnesota, featuring the Terra Cross race. We all had a great time and we caught a few great shots to share. We’ll share the need to know about all the new vehicle introductions that have been coming in hot, and will continue throughout the fall. Of course, we will be at the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show, October 21st through the 23rd at the International Centre. All the main manufacturers and dealers will be on display, with everything from ATVs to Side-by-Sides, Snowmobiles, trailers, gear, trail systems and federations. If you haven’t been, you need to check this Show out! Everything ATV and Side-by-Side all under one roof, all over one weekend. Cody Elkins will be headlining the Ultimax Freestyle Show, back flipping his ATV, with Heath Frisby and Keith Sayers flipping sleds. There will also be ATV and Side-by-Side pulls, where you can watch from the stadium seating in the new Hall 4 Royal Distributing Events Hall. How’s that for a big Show?! So get out and enjoy the cooler weather. And make sure to get your ATV or Side-by-Side in good running order for winter. Best to do it in the fall, while you can still have the shop door open. Enjoy the book Rich

FLY RACING RELEASES THE KINETIC ELITE ONSET HELMET
01 THE MOST POWERFUL FACTORY SIDE-BY-SIDES EVER
Polaris RZR sets another new standard in razor-sharp performance with the introduction of the RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS. Featuring a new ProStar® Turbo H.O. engine that unleashes 168 horsepower – the most power ever offered on a factory side-by-side – the vehicles offer 15 percent more power than last year’s models and 9 percent more than anything else on the market. To match the horsepower upgrade – and significantly improve on 2016 models – the 2017 RZR XP Turbo models feature new, highcapacity cooling, and a stronger driveline to get that power to the ground. The high-capacity cooling includes a new, more powerful, variable-speed, brushless fan coupled with a new, 40-percent larger, high-flow front grill and a 20-percent larger engine radiator. The new cooling ensures the engine can breathe for maximum power delivery. The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS boast the most premium suspension, with exclusive FOX Podium® Internal Bypass Shocks that deliver the plushest ride and best handling found on a side-by-side. The shocks generate progressive damping force that gives the vehicles a smooth ride with all the bottomout resistance expected from ultra-performance off-road vehicles. Large-diameter shock bodies (3-in/7.6 cm rear, 2.5-in./6.4-cm front), adjustable remote reservoirs and increased fluid capacity provide dramatic improvements in heat dissipation, fade resistance and durability. By using five compression zones to provide progressive damping as the shock gently absorbs bumps and stiffens to prevent bottoming, the Internal Bypass Shocks feel like five shocks in one. Combine that with three zones of rebound damping to minimize pitching, plus harsh top out for an ultra-plush ride and better handling over a wider range of terrain at any speed. For ultimate agility, the vehicles feature front and re-tuned rear stabilizer bars to virtually eliminate body roll for flatter cornering. For quicker steering, both vehicles have a new 1.5-turn steering rack, paired with standard Electronic Power Steering (EPS). The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS’ industry-leading braking performance ensures precision stopping. The brakes feature large, triple-piston front calipers, dual-piston rear calipers, stainless-steel rotors and large 248-mm ventilated discs on all four corners, for powerful stopping performance. The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS will be available in late 2016 in Titanium Matte Metallic and Cruiser Black.

Can-Am / Murray Racing pilot Jason Murray piloted the brand new Maverick X3 side-byside vehicle to the UTV Unlimited Pro class victory at the 2016 Best In The Desert Vegas To Reno race in Las Vegas, Nev. The all-new, bold Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R side-by-side vehicle won its debut race just four short days after its worldwide unveiling in Orlando, Fla. The Murray Racing brothers Jason and Derek Murray competed in two different classes in two different Can-Am Maverick turbo vehicles. Jason Murray drove the No. 2927 Can-Am Maverick X3, while his brother Derek piloted the No. 917 Maverick MAX Turbo. Jason earned a statement-making victory with the all-new Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle in its first official race. Derek drove his Maverick to victory in the Turbo Pro Production class and a third-place overall amongst all UTV classes. The CanAm / Murray Racing teams outlasted 60-some other entrants and 650 miles of brutal desert terrain to stand atop the podium in two separate classes at the Vegas To Reno race, which BITD calls “the longest off-road race in the United States.” The Murray brothers lightly modified their Maverick X3 X rs vehicle with a Lonestar Racing cage, doors and bumpers and necessary safety equipment required by the BITD. S3 Racing, Dustin Jones and Shane Dowden, also competed in the BITD race. They added an S3 cage, doors and bumpers and the required safety equipment. However, both of the Maverick X3 racing vehicles remained mostly stock by using the factory-equipped driveline, FOX shocks, suspension arms, 154-hp Rotax ACE triple-cylinder engine, QRS-X CVT, steering componentry and differentials.

PRESENTS
Our “Dude I’m Stuck” feature column, presented by KFI Products, has received some hilarious and mud filled entries. Again this month we’ve chosen 1 in particular to feature for this issue, which definitely deserves to make the book. Thank you for your submissions, and you will all be entered in to the big draw. The story behind this segment is very simple; your buddies are always getting stuck and looking like Jack-wagons or goons when they’re riding, unlike yourself who is always professional. Well Mister Professional start taking pictures. Catch a few pictures or a video of your buddies getting winched, pushed, or pulled out and your picture might wind up in these pages of ATV World Magazine as part of our “Dude I’m Stuck” series. With your submission you will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a KFI SE45 Stealth winch.
Here's how to get involved
Just send us a photo of yourself or a friend getting stuck to info@atvworldmag.com, and give us a little background on where you were and how you managed to get yourself stuck. In each issue of ATV World, the top entries will be chosen and published either in print or on-line. The top three entries will then be placed into a draw to take place February 2017 for the chance to win a KFI SE45 Stealth Winch, courtesy of KFI Products.
ATV World Magazine, Outback Publishing Canada Inc., KFI Products, RKP Inc., and any other affiliate companies, require no one submit any pictures or videos of themselves or others performing any dangerous or illegal activities, they will not be considered or entered. In addition all riders must be wearing a helmet.

STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS
“Listen big deal, you got another problem, Women always figure out the truth. Always!”-Han Solo One of many great quotes from the newest Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. We go thirty years into the future after defeating the empire, but once again the First Order has risen and is disseminating fear across the galaxy. The Resistance is not only trying to stop the First Order, but also trying to find Luke Skywalker before the First Order does!
FORCE OUTBOARD
Force Outboard Motors was stared out by Chrysler Marine and during that time, people believed that Force was an acronym for “From Old Recycled Chrysler Engines”, and this turned out to be somewhat true. They used some recycled Chrysler parts on Force Outboard Motors for savings. Unfortunately, that only lasted until 1984, when U.S Marine bought Chrysler Marine for its brand of outboard motors “Bayliner”. Then in 1986, Brunswick Corporation purchased “Bayliner Boats”, which later became Mercury Marine. Force Outboard motors was discontinued in 1999 and became solely Mercury Marine.

FIBER NOW DOES MORE THAN KEEP US REGULAR
As
I am writing this article during the first week of classes at Canadore College. I always enjoy this time of year at College, due to the fact that routine has not yet set in. Everything is new to the students, and there’s an abundant amount of excitement throughout the campus. During one of my orientations, the conversation turned to what I thought was the best thing about being a teacher. Well….there are many reasons, and my thoughts have changed over the years, but I think it’s because teaching, being a “Gearhead”, and enjoying learning go so well together. I truly enjoy getting up and going to work each and every day. Everything else is icing on the cake.
This front sprocket cover not only looks great and is light, it also is stronger than the original part.
Over the years, I have been recognised for my teaching, but I haven’t really done anything extra ordinary that I didn’t learn from the teachers I had in my life. They made it fun and interesting to come to class, especially in my shop, science and math classes. I simply do what they did, so why reinvent the wheel as they say. When the opportunity does come around, I always take time to thank them and let them know how it has affected my life, and laugh with them when some of them are astounded that I became a teacher myself. That is a story for another day. My Grandfather used to say to me that if a person learns something new every day, life will never get boring. I try and live by those words as much as I can, but as we know, sometimes life gets in the way. I have always been amazed that by mixing substances together, (sometimes simple ones) it can produce such a different product or reaction.
The small size of a strand of carbon fiber is shown by comparing it to a strand of human hair.
It is amazing how many strands of Carbon Fiber are wound together to make a single strand of Carbon Fiber Yarn.

atvworld atvworldmag.com
Take Carbon Fiber for instance. This product is made from substances that would seem to be weak on their own, but end up being very strong with some other very impressive properties. So what is the hype over this stuff anyway? About thirty years ago, it was referred to as a “space age” material because, (you probably guessed it) it was made for the aerospace industry. It was extremely expensive, so the only place you would find it being used was for that application. However today, due to the ever expanding commercialization of the product, this expanding capacity has lowered the production costs, so we mere mortals can afford it. When you compare the strongest carbon fiber to the strength of steel, carbon fiber is approximately 10 times stronger, while being 5 times lighter. If comparing to an aluminum alloy, carbon fiber is 8 times stronger, while being 1.5 times lighter. Additionally, the fatigue strength of carbon fiber is far superior to its metallic counterparts, and when mixed with the proper resins, they are one of the most corrosion resistant materials available. High temperature characteristics are also good, but can vary with the epoxy or resins that the fibers are mixed with, and let’s not forget how “boss” the stuff looks on you or your vehicle as well. A carbon fiber is a long, thin strand of material that is much smaller than a
strand of hair. It is actually somewhere between 0.0002”– 0.0004” or 0.0050.010 mm in diameter. It is made up mostly of carbon atoms; about 90% of its composition is carbon. These atoms are bonded together in microscopic crystals that are aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. Think of it like how the strands of a rope are wound together. This alignment of the crystals makes the fibers incredibly strong for their size. Then by winding several thousand of these carbon fibers together, a type of yarn is made. The yarn can then be used by itself, or woven into a fabric. Now, if you consider the strength of a single strand of thread and how strong a piece of cloth is when woven out of many strands of that thread, a section of carbon fiber fabric would be extremely strong. Then by getting really creative, use some carbon fiber to reinforce a composite material and then you can build anything from a fishing rod or engine parts, to a race car body, an aircraft frame or high tech spacecraft parts. Anywhere reduced weight and high strength is required, you will find carbon fiber. When you think of it, it’s really cool how it is made and how strong it is as a result. It wasn’t that long ago that aluminum was alloyed to improve many of its characteristics, while maintaining its light weight, so I am sure the next best thing is out there as we speak, being
developed to replace this material….in fact, while researching this topic, I ran across some articles suggesting that very subject. It will be interesting to see what is next. In the meantime though, the future (at least the immediate future) of carbon fiber looks good, so I will enjoy the few carbon fiber parts I have, some of them practical and some not so much.
This front sprocket cover not only looks great and is light, it also is stronger than the original part.
These light weight UTV/ATV wheels are a true testament to the strength of carbon fiber.
Armour components in personal riding apparel like these gloves and carbon fiber helmets are light weight and better protection. TORONTO SNOWMOBILE, ATV & POWERSPORTS SHOW • OCT 21-23, 2016 • TORONTO INTERNATIONAL CENTRE • www.torontosnowmobileatvshow.com

Tire Changing For-Thought
5
Top desert racers like Glazzkraft’s Alonso Lopez know the importance of having the right tool for the job, ready and available when it’s needed. Notice his scissor jack has a wide aluminum plate base bolted to it for soft terrain use, and there is even a blanket in case you’re kneeling in cactus for the inevitable tire change.
Built-in Belt Storage
7
Almost every RZR chassis has a perfect sized pocket for a spare clutch belt built into the body, right below the driver door opening. On most models, you will need to pull the quick release seat to access it, but having one there when you need it is worth its weight in gold.

Heat Wrap For Limiting Straps

Quick & Easy Soft Jaws
8
Most racers and car builders are finding a serious advantage to limiting straps with cvt and suspension components. They are often too close to the exhaust pipe and can be saved from certain meltdown by using header wrap on the muffler.
As demonstrated in our shock clevis How-to story, two small pieces of angle aluminum work perfectly as soft jaws with a standard vise. The softer the aluminum the better, and we’ve even seen them permanently attached in some shops.

SHOCK CLEVIS REPAIR
In
order to meet the current sport market’s longer suspension travel needs, almost every high performance Sport UTV has abandoned the A arm type rear suspension set-up, in favor of a longer travel trailing arm set up. These trailing arm type systems can provide incredible wheel travel with reasonably minimal weight. Whether you’re looking at a 3 link type set-up on a RZR XP, or one of the 4 and 5 link set-ups on the Can-Am or Wildcat, the weak link is usually the vulnerable radius rods. Snapping a radius rod is an all too common occurrence, and while relatively cheap to replace, the bigger problem lies in collateral damage to the rest of the rear suspension system. By design, the radius rod holds the rear hub/spindle/trailing arm in its proper place, and breaking at any type of speed will often take out a CV Axle and bend or break the bottom of your shock. While this can look like an incredibly costly catastrophe, more often than not, the aluminum shock clevis will give out long before the hardened steel shock shaft. We have seen the clevis bend and still function enough to finish a weekend, and we’ve also seen them snap completely off. Either way, you can be thankful if the clevis takes the fall, as it’s actually a pretty simple and inexpensive fix. We will show you how simple it really is without a stock rear Fox shock for an XP Turbo, but this method will actually work for nearly every UTV shock on the market. This can be accomplished with simple hand tools you probably have, with the exception of any really high-end shocks that have rebound adjustment in the bottom clevis. If you have “clickers” in your broken/damaged clevis, you will need to recharge the nitrogen after completing the fix.
34
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
1
Remove the shock, clean it thoroughly, assess the damage and order the parts that you will need. If the bearing and/or bushings are undamaged, you can press them out and re-use them. Ours were damaged so we ordered new.
2
Measure the amount of exposed threads between the top of the preload spring adjuster nuts and the top cap of the shock. Write this number down and then use it when reassembling the shock.
A few higher end shocks like the Fox units on the new Can-Am X3 are going to have rebound adjustment clickers built into the bottom clevis. If this is the case with your shock, you will need to release the nitrogen from the Schrader valve located on the shock reservoir. When you reinstall the new clevis, be sure that the adjustment screw is maxed out and back one click before installing onto the shaft. You will also need access to a nitrogen bottle and gauges to refill the shock when you have completed project. If you don’t have this, most ATV or dirt bike shops can do this for around twenty bucks.

Use a hammer and drift/punch/large flat head screwdriver to loosen the top jam nut. You can use the “tool kit” supplied spanner wrench to back off the preload nut. Spin nuts off until you have plenty of slop in the springs for lower collar removal.
5
Remove the roost guard mount bracket if it has one, and then the bottom spring collar plate. Slide all springs and crossovers off the assembly, and be sure to store them in their same designation/order.
7
Use the proper sized wrench or a large crescent to unthread the shock clevis for removal. One it is loose, use a glove to spin it off as it will still be incredibly hot.
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
4
Use a flat blade or small pry bar to slide the rubber bump stop up the shaft and away from the shock clevis. Be careful not to touch/scratch the shock shaft.
6
The shock clevis is threaded onto the shaft with high strength Loctite, and will have to be heated for removal. Use a vise with aluminum or plastic protective soft jaws to hold the shaft. Evenly heat the aluminum clevis with a propane or map gas torch to release the Loctite’s hold.
8
Use a wire brush and/or an SOS pad to clean the old Loctite off of the threads.

Apply two large drops of High Strength Loctite to the cleaned threads on the shock shaft. You can use green or red. Thread the new shock clevis on by hand as far as you can, and then tighten with the proper wrench or crescent.
11
You can use a press to install the bearing, or in a pinch, a hammer and the right sized socket will work just fine. Have someone else hold the shock to keep it level, and use a socket that clears the uniball on the inside and the shock clevis on the outside. Be sure to drive it completely straight and stop as it hits the snap ring.
13
Install the rest of the bushings; on a fox shock like these, you will install two O rings and then alignment bushings into both sides. We used the hammer to press the bushings all the way into place. You could also use a press if you had one, but make sure they are going in straight.
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
10
Use snap ring pliers to install one of the snap rings into the clevis, and then remove shock from vise for bearing and bushing install. Lightly coat the outside of bearing with Anti-Sieze or grease.
12
Be sure that the bearing is centered in the clevis and not pushing against the snap ring. If it is, tap it a hair the other way. Install your second bearing-retainer snap ring.
14
Reinstall the shock springs, crossovers, and bottom collars in the reverse order of how you removed them. Spin the two locknuts down against the spring pack, and use the spanner wrench to tighten them to your original measurement. Use the drift to lock the secondary jam-nut against the other nut.

THE NEW MAVERICK X3 The Maverick X3 is the highest performance sport UTV to date. A whole new aggressive look is combined with industry-leading power, suspension travel and precision handling. All three new X3
machines feature a 154hp turbocharged and intercooled Rotax ACE engine. They also all share a new 102” wheelbase that falls somewhere between the typical two and four seat chassis lengths for
optimal handling. The BRP engineers and marketing team want to express the new X3 with three key words, Defiant, Precise, and Powerful.
>> DEFIANT
>> PRECISE
>> POWERFUL
The X3 defies the norm, as it’s designed to for the driver and passenger to feel connected to its every move. The next generation design is completely unique with intensified Can-Am DNA. Its bold stance is accentuated with a never been accomplished before, ultra-low seating position, designed to encapsulate the occupants so they feel connected to the vehicle’s every move. The X3 rs is 8” wider and has 6” more wheel travel than any other stock UTV.
The X3 features best in class suspension, designed for optimum front and rear balance. BRP developed an ultraefficient, lightweight chassis for superior performance and handling. This amazing new chassis is complemented with new front and rear suspension and top of the line FOX shocks. This all-new configuration is said to provide optimal stability, braking, and ride control.
The industry leading 154 HP Turbocharged power plant features improved airflow, and a performance-tuned transmission to get the power to the ground. The X3 produces 154 HP at 7,500 RPM and 113 ft-lb of torque at 7,000. In stock form it will do 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The overly impressive inline triple is actually 900cc, which still leaves a little on the table for the future with the current guidelines. The majority of this HP is derived from X3’s high-boost turbocharger and optimized air intake system. The QRS-X CVT is calibrated to eliminate turbo lag and enhance throttle response, making the X3 considerably easier to drive when looking for optimal performance.

SO WHAT ARE THEY LIKE ON THE TRAIL?
YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY NOTICE HOW THE X3 HANDLES.
The first day had us riding from Ensenada down the Pacific Coastline to a fishing village known as Erindera, inland to San Vicente for lunch, and then across the peninsula to Mike’s Sky Rancho for dinner, drinks, and a good night’s sleep. With close to 150 miles on our plate, and fifteen or so editors wanting photos, we were going to have to keep a pretty good pace to be swimming at Mikes before dark. The first twenty-five miles is comprised of super-fast, super-fun, hard-pack dirt roads. They are just windy enough to keep you on you toes, but for the most part, straight enough to really let her rip. As the trail winds its way west toward the ocean, it features many small rises and a few whooped out shortcuts where racers have straightened out the turns over the past years.
trails get a little rockier as they begin to curve along the ocean cliffs, and then it opens up to a sandy beach and small dune area. Stopping for some epic photos, I couldn’t help but comment on how well the X3 could be slid around corners with confidence and ease. Just as I was speaking to the X3’s stability and planted feeling, we witnessed one of the other editors flipping their brand new test machine completely on its lid. While the X3 is completely confidence inspiring, and probably more stable than most UTVs on the market, donuts on wet sand are still not a great idea. Especially if your running a little low in the talent department. Lol We toured the beautiful Pacific Ocean for about 25 miles that morning and then banked a left, heading east towards the Sierra San Pedro Martir Mountain Range.
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
You will immediately notice how well the X3 handles, and with even more suspension travel than any other UTV, it still turns comfortably and controllably, thanks to dual sway bars and a lower COG. You are sitting lower in the X3 than any other previous UTV, and this really helps with sliding confidence and overall stability. It feels fast, but we really didn’t notice how fast it was until cresting the small rollers. Stabbing the gas literally feels like the front end is going to come off the ground, even on the mildest crest in the trail. With a little “pop”, you could damn near wheelie the thing; it really throws you back in your seat every time you step on the gas. The X3 feels not only fast, but just plain easy to drive aggressively We made our way to the Pacific Ocean, with incredible panoramic views. The

Our final destination for the night was Mike’s Sky Rancho, an eclectic mountain resort that is based solely on off-road visitors, and a small handful of seasonal trout fishing cliental. Mike’s Sky Rancho is a 50+ room hotel located 25 miles from anywhere, and was built initially as a hunting/fishing/horseback lodge in the late 60’s. At the same time, the Mexican government was making some strong gun regulation changes that would pretty much kill off the hunting industry in Baja, Mike inked a deal to have the SCORE Mexican Baja 1000 run through his ranch. And the rest is history. Heading to Mike’s from the coast, the trail is comprised of miles upon miles of high-speed rocky dirt roads, usually with a massive to your right, keeping you on your game. We had to step up the pace to reach Mike’s with enough daylight for photos. Stepping up the pace meant more fun for most, and it also meant flat tires for

a few. The group ended day one with two flats and two blown clutch belts. The flats were both sidewall issues and probably avoidable with a little more caution. The clutch belts had the Can-Am engineers in disbelief, as they had tested for thousands of miles, and were very confident in their new CVT clutch and its durability. In their defense, we lost two belts out of nearly twenty cars on 300 miles of high speed Baja terrain. Another huge factor was that all of these cars had nearly 500 miles on them already, from traveling the country for dealer demos. Each car and its respective clutch belt had witnessed 150200 different drivers, hitting a three mile demo course, and wanting to test what the machine really had. With that fact alone, I am overly impressed that we didn’t need 7-8 belts over the trip. Mike’s was a great time; we had a well deserved steak dinner, some cold beers, a little Tequila, then hitting the sack early.
NEARLY TWENTY CARS ON 300 MILES OF BAJA TERRAIN We were all up early the next morning, had a home cooked breakfast, and then explored the ranch in our X3’s. After a few cool photo ops, we left Mike’s on the same road we had came in on. After winding down the fun trails out of Mike’s, we banged a right, heading further east. We went through Valle De La Trinidad and headed up to the infamous “Goat Trail” for some technical rock crawling, on our way into the pine forest and to Laguna Hansen. In low gear, the X3 is extremely functional as a rock crawler. It is limited to about 20 mph in low, but its smooth power delivery

conquers obstacles with ease. Leaving the Goat Trail, Bruce’s trail is a great mix of fast, smooth trails, some whoops, fun banked turns and a few rolling jumps. We were now heading from the desert floor, up into a completely different mountain range called the Sierra Juarez Mountains. The fact that Baja is a narrow Peninsula really becomes noticeable when you realize that you can ride the coast, two different mountain ranges, and the desert floor, all in the same day. I had started the first day in the 64” X3 ds with fully adjustable shocks, and swapped out to the “Race Ready” 72-inch X3 rs model for the afternoon. The X3 ds had great suspension, was really quick and truly left me impressed. The X3 rs is like nothing you’ve ever driven. It really feels like you’re driving an off the shelf race car. The massive 30” Maxxis tires are perfect for the Baja trail system and race course. The wider suspension set up leaves the tires extremely visible to the driver and passenger, but incredibly, having enough inbound roost was never really a problem. While the narrower machines are lighter
and slightly lower geared with their 28” and 29” tires, you would never complain about the bigger X3 rs not having enough power. This thing is a beast, and it will be an amazing platform in any form of competition. Day two we started out with the X3 rs again, but swapped it out after the Goat Trail to try the base X3 model. This model is 64” wide and comes with a slightly lower cost, but also with the less complicated FOX QR3 shock. The QS3 shock is still preload and ride height adjustable, should you favor a completely different set up, but its compression adjustment is as simple as it gets. Soft, medium, and hard; if you’re cruising a nice leisurely trail, you opt for soft. If the going gets a little more aggressive, you click them to medium, and if you’re in full moto mode with your buddies, you opt for the hard setting. They seem overly simple, but the ranges are really diverse, and they did an incredible job for everything we encountered that afternoon. Another really cool thing on the base model was the 28 inch tires. We strategically swapped into the 28” tire

clad machine, just as the trail system was getting smoother and less rocky. If you’re not looking for ground clearance in the rocks, or roll out in the rough, the smaller tire will really outperform its bigger brothers, with improved performance and handling. Needless to say, the lower priced entry level X3 is a rocket ship, and still extremely fun to drive. If you’re looking for an all-around fun, sport/trail UTV, the $ savings on this machine might just make it a no-brainer.

THE FINAL TALLY
We loved the X3, all three of them. If you’re looking for the bad boy, ready to go desert machine, then the X3 rs is your machine. If your riding is still varied, you will like both of the narrower options. Horsepower and handling is top notch and the cockpit is comfortable. The seats are easy to adjust, the doors/latches work well, and there really isn’t a lot to complain about. The only thing we could improve on is excessive cockpit noise. The clutch and engine intake is right behind the driver’s head, and it makes quite a racket. This is a minor complaint as it’s mostly at higher RPM, but it is valid. 15 X3’s and nearly 300 miles of trail, and we only saw four tire changes and two belt changes. The belts had over 500 miles on them before the trip even began, and absolutely nothing else went wrong on these machines. That was impressive for anywhere, especially the Baja! We had a great time on the tour, and this machine is going to be winning a lot of races and a lot of people over. Can-Am has done a great job!

Along comes the ACE 570 with 13 more HP, bigger tires, and the option for EPS. The only thing holding this thing back at the track was it’s suspension limiting, and slightly brittle MacPherson Strut front end. The MacPherson strut front end provides ample suspension travel, with decent enough damping for your average trail rider, but you will quickly find its limitations when riding aggressively. One of the main limiting factors with a Macpherson Strut front end is that there isn’t much room for improvement from the aftermarket. The cast aluminum strut basically takes the place of your top A arm, shock absorber, and your spindle. With dual A arms and shocks, you can change the geometry and lengths for more travel, and the options for quality shock absorbers are abundant. With this strut set up, you were limited to revalving and springing the stock struts.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
Knowing the advantage of a dual A arm front end, and realizing the potential of the ACE as a possible race platform, a few brave fabricators went as far as adding framework and tabs for a dual a arm set up. Once they installed an upper frame rail with mounts for an upper A arm, then they could fab long travel A arms and purchase custom shocks and longer axles. In other words, it was a very costly endeavor. About this time, Polaris also released an ACE 900, with crazy amounts of power that seemed more than a little unnecessary with the minimal suspension travel and relatively short wheelbase. We’ve been wanting to race the WORCS series on one, but decided to wait it out and bank on Polaris listening to, and acting on the requests from the media and racer types. Building one of these dual arms race ACEs was expensive, and if Polaris released one of their own, it would
HOLDING OUT PAID OFF IN DIVIDENDS AS POLARIS ENGINEERS WERE WORKING ON EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE WANTING. definitely hurt the return value on it. Holding out paid off in dividends as Polaris engineers were working on exactly what we were wanting, and they just brought it to the table for the 2017 model year.

THE DUAL A ARM ACE’S
We recently got the invite to go experience the brand new ACE 570 SP with dual arm front suspension in Great Falls, MT. We would actually be riding outside Great Falls at an amazing ranch called Bull Run, which is designed completely around a sustainable trail system. The scenery was almost as cool as the new machines, but not quite! Polaris would actually be having four ACE models for 2017; the original 330 ACE gets a 500cc power plant for more power, as well as a few other comfort upgrades. The standard ACE 570 gets a couple of comfort improving cabin upgrades, and a price decrease. The big news of course is the new dual A arm ACE 570 SP and the double throw me down ACE 900 XC. As we hoped and expected, Polaris introduced a dual arm front end on both 570 and the 900. The 900 XC is a completely cool new machine, with wider long travel suspension with fully adjustable Walker Evans shocks, and a longer wheelbase. There was only one 900 XC on hand, so we will be getting a loaner unit shortly for testing, a build story, and some eventual racing. The ACE 570 SP was exactly what we were hoping for, the same powerful 45 HP EFI PROSTAR engine, EPS, and the
new dual A arm suspension set up. The ACE 570’s new dual A-arm set up provides over 9” of front suspension travel for soaking up anything in its path. This new suspension system provides a superior ride, but also features dual stabilizer bars “sway bars” quicker steering, and a 20% tighter turning radius for improved handling as well. The ACE 570 SP is available in a painted Titanium Matte Metallic color, and gets the same cabin comfort increases that

we mentioned on the base models. These include 10% more leg-room, 13% easier or roomier entry/exit, and more than a gallon of added cockpit storage. As with previous model years, the SP model gets EPS, factory installed quarter doors like the RZR XP, an engine braking system, painted body work, and cast aluminum wheels. The best part is the retail pricing is exactly the same as last year’s MacPherson Strut equipped model.

THE RIDE SAY’S IT ALL
We, the wife and I got lots of seat time in the new ACE 570 SP, with a long trail loop around the facility/ranch and then a photo shoot. The ACE platform is a blast to drive, and you can’t help but walk away smiling. The new suspension is such an improvement to an already fun machine. After a long loop with constantly varying terrain, we both had great things to say and not much of anything to complain about. Going into the ride we were both expecting better bump absorption and a smoother ride in the rough, but we were both blown away by how much better it handles as well. My wife Paulina, being newer to the ATV/UTV scene, but still a quick learning, thrill seeking performance junkie, is probably the ideal market for the ACE 570. She drives the original ACE hard enough to want better suspension, but doesn’t really need any more HP or top speed, as she would likely just get into trouble with it. With that said, she actually loved the acceleration of the ACE 900, whereas the extra pounds I was carrying, had me bottoming repeatedly. The new ACE 570 was a perfect fit for her, she could rip it through the woods and trails with plenty of speed, and it handles way better than the previous models in both the rough and the turns. The ACE 570 SP, with its greatly improved handling, was confidence inspiring enough to keep my reasonably experienced wife driving the same trail pace as the rest of the more experienced magazine editors. I truly think that this is one of the best things about the ACE platform, and undoubtedly a major focus with Polaris. The user gets the individuality of their own machine to control their own adventure, yet they still get the safety benefit of a safety cage. The rudimentary, automotive type controls take away a whole learning curve on their-own as well. Driving the ACE 570 SP myself is still entertaining as all get out, regardless of its relatively tame motor. The previous generation ACE would bottom hard when hitting obstacles at the speeds it was capable of. When the front bottoms, it would usually rebound too quickly, lightening the front end to where the front tires weren’t really in traction. The new A arm front end has more travel, and even with its basic entry level front shocks, does a great job of resisting bottom out and also dampens the rebound better as well. Between the better steering/handling and the improved traction, via- anti bottoming front end, you can really drive the ACE 570 to the capabilities of the motor. It was a blast driving at speed, and the 570 power plant is still probably the perfect amount of horsepower for most anyone in a vehicle of that wheelbase. While the short wheelbase might hamper all out performance at top higher speeds, it actually makes for a great and capable trail machine when things get tight. The only true complaint I could muster up is that I believe the rear end still has the previous generation’s valving/spring rate, and that it would bottom pretty hard on obstacles, g-outs and big ruts. With that said, at 210 pounds and pro level UTV/ATV driving, I’m definitely not the target market. My wife on the other hand, at 125 pounds, could hit anything she wanted with it, at any speed, and never finding the bottom of the stock setup. The ACE 570 SP gets zero offset cast aluminum wheels that are similar to the RZR.

THE ACE 570 SP IS THE PERFECT ADVENTURE VEHICLE.
DRIVING THE ACE 570 SP IS STILL ENTERTAINING AS ALL GET OUT. FINAL THOUGHTS
We love this new machine, and it is exactly where we hoped the ACE would evolve too. The ACE 570 SP brings everything we like about UTVs and ATVs together, to be accessible to the masses. The ACE has been slowly starting a whole new class of offroad racing, and now this overly capable platform will surely accelerate its growth. We can’t wait for next month to get some seat time in the double throw me down, long travel ACE 900 XC for its own review. 900 XC for it’s own review.

Despite having less travel and reduced ground clearance compared to the “bigger” Wildcat Trail Sport models, the nimble Trail proved to have more than enough of both to take us anywhere with greater comfort, thanks to more compliant suspension tuning.
Of course, the real test comes long after those first ride, good vibrations, when the new model hits dealer showrooms and lands in the hands of eager enthusiasts. It’s been a few years since Arctic Cat first introduced their trail friendly Wildcat Trail. Since then, other iterations of the narrowed side-by-side with 700cc twin-cylinder power have been introduced, including the wider, 60-inch stance Wildcat Sport. While the Sport delivers greater stability and more eye-catching pop, with its flared fenders and performance tuned suspension, it was the 50-inch, trail friendly Trail model that hit our soft spot, and found its way into our ATV World shop for some long term running. After a full summer of neighborhood jaunts, point-to-point burns, trailside cookouts, and light utility work, here’s our five takeaways after a year of “wild” rides.
64
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
NIMBLE
If there is one word that best describes the Wildcat Trail, ‘nimble’ is it. With a wheelbase of just over 84-inches, (215cm) the narrow buggy can navigate the tightest trail with relative ease. Unlike larger vehicles, where one would typically charge through nasty terrain, the Trail allows you to pick the best line. On rock littered or rutted trails, the little Wildcat reacts quickly to the slightest steering wheel gesture, picking its way through terrain instead of merely over it. We were blessed with the Wildcat Trail XT with Electronic Power Steering, a must in our opinion for any side-by-side, especially if trail running is your primary objective. The fluid and linear steering motion allows you to react quickly to changing terrain, and there is nary a hint of negative feedback to the wheel or your hands.
BUMPING OFF THE REVLIMITER AND RUNNING HARD PACK TRAILS OR MINIMUM MAINTENANCE ROADS, THE WILDCAT TRAIL CAN EASILY HIT MID TO UPPER 60MPH NUMBERS.

atvworld atvworldmag.com
EAGER
Despite the small displacement of the Kymco built 700-twin, the Wildcat Trail delivers surprisingly quick acceleration. Throttling down from the exit of a corner results in just right wheel spin to exit, with a hint of counter steer. Conversely, initial engagement is akin to a light switch. Managing forward movement from a stop or slightly above walking speed can be difficult as the machine lurches with eagerness. When navigating tight confines, loading or unloading, or the occasional light utility task, oh-sosubtle throttle management is required. Fortunately, those low-speed hiccups are soon forgotten when you let the Trail stretch its legs. Bumping off the rev-limiter and running hard pack trails or minimum maintenance roads, the Wildcat Trail can easily hit mid to upper 60mph numbers.
SPACE
The first time you slip behind the wheel of the Trail, there’s a few things you’ll immediately appreciate. For starters, the I-beam shape of the over-structure makes for easy ingress and egress, (provided you don’t have a roof panel or canvas top) especially for taller riders. There’s no outside bar to duck under, allowing you
An easy to install half-windshield and bimini top are must add accessories, delivering added comfort and protection from the elements. to slip into the stitched seat with less contortion. Those seats are comfortable too, but like many stock seats, they lack the side bolster support to better hold you in place when running at higher speeds on twisted trails. The reverse open “suicide” type doors swing wide for spacious entrance, and become second nature to operate after just a few rides. As one might expect in a vehicle as compact
as the Trail, legroom is tight, especially for riders nearing the 6-foot mark. Your left knee will immediately find the left door, and on rough trails, you’ll find the minimal factory padding found there lacking. We added additional padding to this area, and at over 6-feet in height, a few extra stops to stretch the knees is in order. The small steering wheel feels right in your hands and the shifter falls perfectly
No question, our favorite attribute of the Wildcat Trail is its agility and quick to react handling. Unlike bigger vehicles, we found ourselves “picking” lines on rocky and rutted trails, thereby enhancing the driving experience.

in place for your right hand. Perhaps the biggest nags are excessive cab noise and heat. The little twin cylinder produces plenty of drone, making conversations between you and your riding partner a bit of a shouting match. In addition, a negative vacuum effect appears to form at certain speeds, forcing hot air from the engine up through the center console.
CUSH
While many may opt for the more sport performance tuned calibrations of the Wildcat Trail Sport with available JRi compression adjustable shocks, (Sport and Sport XT) or Elka Stage 5 shocks with both compression and rebound adjustments, (Sport Limited) the simple FOX gas charged shocks found on the base Trail models serves up a more supple ride. In riding the three variations back to back to back, the FOX suspended version delivered a more comfortable ride, especially through small rocks and ruts, without sacrificing control when pushed. With 10-inches of front travel and 10-5-inches at the rear, we never found the Trail to come up short in terms of travel or ground clearance. Add to this a greater ability to pick a preferable line, and the Wildcat Trail is our choice for the best trail bang for the money.
BLING
If there’s one thing that nearly every off-road enthusiast can agree on, it’s the need or desire to accessorize their buggy. While we didn’t get crazy with our model, we did give the rather stripped down Trail some added protection and storage with a smattering of Arctic Cat accessories. The easy to install half-windshield is a great compromise from a fullwindow, directing much of the direct blast of air and debris up and over the rider, while still providing unobstructed sight lines. Plus, unlike other aftermarket offerings, the genuine Cat window incorporates two lower vents for additional cooling and a much-improved fit that retains access to the front under the cowl area. It was here that we added the Cat storage box (found standard on other Wildcat Trail models). The 3.2-gallon storage capacity is large enough to stow most of your gear, can double as a cooler, and features a dust-tight lid to keep gear safe from the elements. A fabric bimini top kept the hot rays of the sun at bay and provided shelter from the occasional rain shower. While a molded plastic roof delivers better looks, the fabric version is affordable, easy to remove, and easy to stow, when running with an open cage is preferred. Lastly, we gave our vehicle some much-needed frontal protection with a rugged and good-looking aluminum front bumper. Available in natural, black, or team green colors, it’s a must for running wooded trails, or venturing off them. This overhead shot shows the centric design of the overstructure, giving driver and passenger a less obstructed path to entering and exiting the vehicle.

The transmission shift gate is counter-intuitive with a P-R-N-H-L pattern from fore to aft. While owners will become accustomed to the pattern, it still caught us off-guard from time to time, especially when performing light utility tasks.
The “suicide” style doors offer easy access when open, and ample airflow for hot days when closed. We’d recommend the installation of additional padding (the driver’s door comes with factory padding) to the inside grab handles for knee protection.

TIGER TAIL
INSTALL
Here is a unique item that came through our shop this summer, the Tiger Tail tow system. We’ve come up with a dozen reasons why you should have one of these mounted to your machine. The Tiger Tail system is a retractable tow system designed to work like a winch, however without the need for an electrical hook up or a motor that can burn out. The guys over at Tiger Tail claim a 12,000lb break strength point in the rope, which is more than enough to get any UTV out of the mud. We used it all summer and for sure it has its benefits. Think of it more of a 12ft tow strap that is always ready to go, and you don’t have to deal with a muddy hunk of tow strap…you know what we are referring to. So where the heck do you store that hot mess? The system itself comes pre-assemble with the hook and rope nicely secured to the system. Then all you need to do is chose from the numerous different mounting plates based on what works best for your unit. For us at ATV World, we installed it on our CFMoto Z Force 800EX, which came supplied from the factory with a 2” hitch receiver, so we decided to go with the standard 2” adjustable mount.
70
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 4
The install is one of the easiest things we have done this season. The Tiger Tail system itself is a complete assembled unit. You have to do nothing to that part. All you need to do is fasten the Tiger Tail standard mounting plate to the 2” receiver using two stainless steel carriage bolts then mount the Tiger Tail to the plate using 4 stainless carriage bolts (all hardware supplied). One suggestion at this point is to retract the rope all the way out in order to access the holes easier. A second set of hands makes this a little easier but can be done alone. Just make sure you don’t let that rope go.
HOW TO USE
If you can pull a rope you can use the Tiger Tail. The system has a really beefy feel to it made from solid materials and you know you are dealing with quality manufacturing. The rope is a sturdy 11/16” multi-branded nylon that is under retractable tension from the spring system. Simply pull the rope out, attached it to your buddies machine, and as he pulls you out the rope retracts back into the Tiger Tail and you don’t have to worry about riding over your tow strap. When you are free, simply remove the hook, and walk the rope back in. We do not suggest letting it fly back in on it’s own, because you will notice when you use it, the spring has some pretty aggressive tension and you don’t want that massive hook free flying through the air. As we say at ATV World; Safety never takes a holiday!
OVERALL IMPRESSION
The Tiger Tail is a well-crafted piece of equipment that certainly helps get you unstuck if you have one on board. By design this system took everything we hate about using tow straps out of the equation. The company does mention in the marketing material that it is like a winch, but only dynamics. We should remind you that you do always need two machines to make this system work, where as with a winch, that you can use it alone. One slight issue we saw, and this is also because of the location of our receiver on the Moto, if you are on a very steep rock decline or incline you will have to be conscience of the fact it may rub on the ground. Again if you take very steep transitions slowly then this is a non-issue. The cost is reasonable coming in around

$275.00 USD. So it is cheaper than a good winch, however more expensive than a good tow rope. If you’re serious about riding and spend a fair For complete details head over to www.tigertail.us
The standard 2” receiver mount for the Tiger Tail makes install a breeze.
All hardware supplied to mount the Tiger Tail to their universal plate.
One trick we found was retract the rope all the way out to access the bolt holes on the bottom.

THE GEARBOX
1
HERE AT ATV WORLD the Fall Riding season is one of our favourite times of year. . The bugs are gone, the dust has settled, and the blazing summer sun has toned itself down a bit. To follow is a list of gear we have stumbled across during the summer months that would be great to get you ready for heading into the fall and early winter rider season. Enjoy.
You put snow tires on your truck. Haven’t you ever asked yourself, “why don’t I put snow tires on my buggy?” Kind of makes sense now doesn’t it. The Snow Beast by Maxxis (the name alone makes you want to buy these) is a true ATV/UTV utility tire that was developed for “shredding the pow-pow brah”. With wide lug spacing and large surface area the Snow Beast offers up some pretty amazing grip in the ice and snow. The material used is specifically crafted for cold-weather conditions, and Maxxis even predrilled the lugs for stud install. So if winter riding is your thing, then the Snow Beast is your new tire. OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH AND WE’RE ALL ABOUT THE PINK!
Did you know that in 2016 it is estimated that 25,500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer? This equates to 1 in 9 women receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Did you also know that MEN CAN GET BREAST CANCER TOO? It is estimated that 220 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 60 will die from breast cancer this year. October is a great time to remind your loved ones to ensure they perform regular self-breast exams and be aware of their breast health. Early detection can save your life! Since its inception in 2000, The Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation has been providing financial assistance to those battling breast cancer across Canada. Over $4.6 million has been raised over the past 18 years to help ease the financial strain that a diagnosis can cause. In conjunction with breast cancer awareness month, The Foundation is thrilled to announce a partnership with Snap-on Tools through their “Socket to breast cancer” campaign. As part of the breast cancer awareness campaign, Snap-on Tools made a $10,000 donation to the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation and will donate additional funds from the sale of special “Socket to Breast Cancer” promotional items. For more information on this partnership please contact your local Snap-on Tools Franchisee or visit www.snapon.com/sockettobreastcancer. As a volunteer based charity we rely on the generosity of our amazing sponsors, general public donations and annual fundraising events such as the 18th Annual Kelly Shires Breast
Cancer Snow Run which is around the corner. The 7th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer event raised over $75,000 and over 30 riders, both men and women, participated in the 7th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV event. The annual weekend event, hosted by Grand Tappattoo Resort, Sequin was held in April. It was filled with lots of sun, mud and fun!! Last year, after 5 years of watching some really humorous situations on our annual ride, it was decided to create a “WTF Award” (sponsored by Max Rolph). This award was given to the most “dramatic mishap” of the day and while there were certainly several candidates who qualified with some pretty humorous results, the award went to a trio of wonderful ladies – Kelly Turcotte, Brandi Parson and Theresa MacDonald for attempting a very unique swim with a turtle (you can use your imagination). The ladies were great sports as they accepted this humorous award. Congratulations to Jessica Upward for stealing the show and winning the “Deck Your Ride” award, new this year. We are thrilled to announce that over $75,000 was raised at the event through participant pledges, corporate sponsorships, silent auction and raffle. We are proud to announce that for the 5th year in a row, Mitch Kleinstein is the recipient of our highest pledges award! Congratulations to Mitch for topping this list once again this year, your passion inspires us all! A heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers and friends who helped us out on the trails; Peter
Searle for being part of our Friday Park to Park ride; Andrew Ryeland and John Hennig from Bear Claw Tours for hosting and guiding us for our all day ride on Saturday! A sincere thank you to our amazing Sponsors that support this event and make it possible: ATV World, Cabela’s World Class Outfitters, Bear Claw Tours, Coleman, and Radioworld and all our Silent Auction donators both private and companies. Look for us at the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersport Show this October 21-23 at the International Centre. Don’t miss out on purchasing a raffle ticket at our booth for a chance to win the early bird draw prize of a 2016 Can-Am Outlander 570 XMR donated by Factory Recreation. The winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday, October 23rd at the show. Our 8th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV Event will be held on April 28 & 29, 2017. Breaking it Down
T
hrottled down and churning dust, our group of vehicles was making quick time across the arid desert. Small rock outcroppings and sagebrush jutted towards the edges of the two-track road, and only quick wheel inputs kept potential harm inches from the beadlocks. Our final destination was still some 20-miles out, somewhere beyond those jagged, silhouetted cliffs in the distance. The rays of the sun were growing longer by the minute, and soon we would have to rely on the artificial light provided by our vehicles to navigate the final 10-miles. To a photographer we were smack dab in the middle of the “golden hour” a time when the sun casts a beautiful warm glow across the landscape.

Our guides made it clear that getting back before it got “completely” dark would be the prudent thing to do. “Things can go wrong quickly out here when it gets dark,” one of them said. Yet those words of wisdom meant little to me at this moment. I was in the zone. That perfect blend of speed, terrain, and quick reactions that keeps you pushing for more speed…driving on the edge between triumph and disaster. If adrenaline does course through your veins, it was doing so for me at this moment. I was focused and tense, yet having the time of my life. “It can’t get any better than this,” I told myself as the desert whisked by in a steady, almost indiscernible blur. Or could it?
Suddenly our blistering pace slowed and one by one we rolled to a stop on a small bluff. Up ahead I could see one of the vehicles was listing heavily to one side…a flat tire…the desert had claimed another one. I was still buzzing from the pace as I shut off my vehicle. The dust storm behind was still lingering as I cast an eye towards our just traveled direction. As I neared the wounded vehicle our guides were already fast at work getting the deflated tire and rim off with a new one at the ready. There were already enough hands in the mix making the repair, so I pulled off my helmet and grabbed a well-shaken bottle of water from one of the coolers. A long drink was followed by a gritty wipe of my face with an equally dust covered hand. It was at that moment, as I peered towards the west, the entire desert opened up. Suddenly the octane buzz was replaced with a sense of awe. “This place is amazing,” I muttered to myself with my mouth slightly agape. The sun was moving quick, and would soon be dipping behind the distant rocks. I took a few steps back and surveyed the landscape. Here we were, a group of friends ripping it up across the desert having the time of our lives, yet not one of us had completely recognized the surrounding beauty of the desert. I motioned to the group huddled around the deflated vehicle, gesturing towards the setting sun with accompanying vocalization of simply “Hey”. The group went silent, each of us standing for a few minutes to watch the hurried sun disappear over the horizon in a sky soaked with orange and red hues. Thanks to ATVs and side-by-sides, offroad enthusiasts get to experience places few others do…from deep wooded trails and towering granite peaks, to seemingly never-ending rolling grasslands and the heart of the lonely desert. It could get better, and for a few brief minutes before the desert went mute in darkness, this was it.
