This is about more than specs. Or hype. This is about how it feels to ride. It’s about a suspension system that’s inspired by off-road racing to deliver best-in-class ride and handling. It’s about what FOX 2.5 PODIUM QS3 Shocks and 18 inches of travel can do to mud, dirt, dunes and rocks. It’s about white knuckles. Punishing trails. Impossible odds. And the only ride built for all of it. Wildcat™ XX has arrived.

High Lifter Mud Nationals After the incredibly cold winter we had, cooped up inside the cab of our General of Winter build, when the calendar flipped to March and we saw the Texas Mud Nationals on the calendar, there was no doubt in our mind. We booked our flights down to Texas, and wandered over to Jacksonville to take a look at this one of a kind event. It had been a few years since we had the chance to check out the custom bikes roaming the hills of Mud Creek Off Road Park, and needless to say, we certainly weren’t disappointed.

Taps on taps on taps; we’re sure these “Unlimited Daily Refills” didn’t go unused, with the sun beating down throughout the week. 30

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 1

The Polaris crew had a full model lineup on hand for attendees to drool over, including the all-new Dynamix equipped RZR and the RS1.

Bigger is always better right? We’re sure there’s a ladder in the bed, or at least a step stool.

Of course the Can Am crew had the XMR line front and center for the mud enthusiasts of Mud Nats.

It didn’t take long for anyone lacking a winch or a TigerTail to find themselves over at the KFI booth.

If you find yourself without a snorkel kit down here, you’d seriously regret it.

The High Lifter crew goes above beyond, coordinating this unique event.

Tall, skinny mud wheels are the industry standard weapons of choice for tackling the deep stuff.

MSA Off Road seemed to have wheel kits on the majority of the show and shine entries, and looking at these wheels, you can see why.

This ATV Lyfe build wasn’t hard on the eyes, as it made its first event debut.

It took three bikes and a broken driveshaft before this tracked Pioneer 1000 was unglued from this mud hole.

WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT? There has been a lot of discussion lately about technology and vehicles. Much of this technology is finding its way to everyday vehicles, and more sooner than later, will be found on recreational vehicles. Some examples of these new technologies are autonomous applications, hybrids with internal combustion engines and battery power, electric vehicles which are battery powered only, (brought forward into the headlines recently by Tesla, and look at what KTM is doing with battery powered motorcycles) and last but certainly not least, fuel cells. Now it is probably going to be a while before a fuel cell ATV or Side by Side finds its way on to the showroom floor, but I think it is interesting enough to discuss this energy source at this time.

This is a basic hydrogen atom. One electron revolving around a nucleus that contains a single proton and neutron.

46

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 1

So, first and foremost, what is a fuel cell? Well, if you think of the automotive lead/acid battery you have in your car, you have the basic concept. The biggest difference is that when a battery is discharged, (dead) you recharge it. A fuel cell creates electricity primarily the same way, but it uses a fuel (hydrogen) to cause the reaction to create electricity. So as long as the fuel cell has hydrogen fuel, it will continue to create electricity. Let’s look a little deeper into how it works. What is hydrogen? Remember the Hindenburg? Hydrogen is the simplest of all elements. It is number 1 on the “periodic table” which means it has 1 electron revolving around a nucleus made up of 1 proton and 1 neutron. Hydrogen is by far the most plentiful element in the universe, making up 75% of the mass of all visible matter in the stars and galaxies. So…..this is good, we have a very large supply of the stuff. Where do we find hydrogen? The fundamental question underlying the use of hydrogen as a fuel is, where do we get it from? Despite its abundance in the universe, hydrogen does not occur freely on earth, as it reacts very readily with other elements. For this reason, the vast majority of hydrogen is bound into molecular compounds such as water or H2O. (2 hydrogen atoms bound to 1 oxygen atom) Most fuels like gasoline are hydrocarbon based fuels. Gasoline’s composition is C8H18. So, we found where it is hiding, how do we extract it? How do we manufacture hydrogen? To obtain hydrogen means to remove it from these other compounds. It could be water, which takes a lot of energy, or a fossil fuel which takes much lower amounts of energy. The process of extracting hydrogen from fossil fuels is called “reforming”. This may be considered a low cost method of producing hydrogen, but unfortunately, reforming emits pollutants and consumes

This schematic represents a very basic fuel cell. Hydrogen and Oxygen in, a reaction occurs causing electron flow and the electric motor rotates.

www.daycoproducts.com

non-renewable fuels. Extracting hydrogen from water is called electrolysis. Electrolysis can be entirely non-polluting and renewable, but due to the large amount of electricity required, the environmental impact of creating hydrogen in this manner is largely dependent on how the source power is generated. Once we get the hydrogen, what do we do with it? Hydrogen Storage. If extracting hydrogen is the toughest challenge when using it, then the second toughest challenge is how to store it. It can be stored as a liquid cryogenically, or as a high pressure gas. Depending on the application will determine how it is stored. The amount of hydrogen needed for a fuel cell is somewhat offset by the fact that a fuel cell uses hydrogen more efficiently than an ICE (internal combustion engine) uses fuel, so less fuel is required to achieve the same result. Hydrogen also has the highest energy-to-weight ratio of any fuel. Gasoline has approximately 19,000 Btu’s per pound while hydrogen has 51,000 Btu’s per pound. OK, so now how does the hydrogen become power? How does the Fuel Cell work? A fuel cell is an energy conversion device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, directly into electricity, without any intermediate thermal or mechanical processes. Energy is released whenever a fuel reacts chemically with the oxygen in the air, whether it is combustively, as in an internal combustion engine, or electrochemically in a fuel cell. A fuel cell can operate without creating pollution, with the only by-products being pure water and heat. In a fuel cell there is no combustion, the reaction is purely chemical. Catalysts are used to combine the fuel (hydrogen) with oxygen. The reaction releases electrons, which is electrical energy. Fuel cells have no moving parts, and will continue to work until the hydrogen fuel supply is gone. A single fuel cell produces a very low voltage, somewhere around 1 volt. To provide the amount of energy (power) needed to drive a vehicle, several hundred fuels cells are connected in series. This assembly of fuel cells is called a fuel cell stack. Since the cells are hooked in series, (let’s say 120 cells) the combined output would be approximately 120 volts. This voltage is high enough to power an electric motor on some type of vehicle. There are a different fuel cell designs, some not very practical or affordable for use in an automobile. It is worth mentioning that regardless of the type or design, they are all more efficient than the internal combustion engine. The type of fuel cell currently being used in vehicle applications is known as the PEM (proton exchange membrane). This type of fuel cell is favored by vehicle manufacturers because it allows for adjustable outputs which are necessary for variable driving speeds. It is also quite compact and it is capable of providing high outputs. One of the biggest disadvantages of this type of fuel cell is that the membrane part of the assembly has to stay moist, so in cold climates, the moisture will freeze, making it very difficult to start operating. They (the manufacturer) are working on it though.

48

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 1

To investigate and learn more about fuel cells, go on to You Tube and search fuel cells. There are some great animations and short videos that will explain everything discussed in this editorial in greater detail. Who would have thought a glass of water could power a car? What will they think of next?

This picture shows that if a current is applied (in this case a battery) to water, the water will break down through electrolysis into hydrogen and oxygen.

Here is how fuel cells are constructed into a fuel cell stack. Each cell will deliver a certain amount of voltage but combined together, a high voltage to drive a vehicle will result.

Polaris recently released the race ready RS1 single seater with a much larger, heavier duty front diff that features rubber mounts to isolate it from shock, noise and driveline abuse. The unit is said to carry three times the impact resistance to shock, and also uiets t e dri etrain c atter drastically. The larger, rubber mount differential has proven itself as incredibly tough in the

RS1, and will undoubtedly be an improve improvement in the Turbo S. Will this differential be an upgrade option for re ious P ur o s es and no It loo s li e it could definitel e done ut it is uc lar er and ill re uire a su stantial amount of trimming and fabbing of mounts. RIDE TIME e don t a e a ton of ti e in it et so time will tell the tale on the durability improvements. What we can speak to is the handling, comfort, and overall drivability. First, when getting into the car, the seats are the same, but the harnesses are a reall nice i ro e ent. It does ta e a little patience to adjust them to your size, but once ou fi ure out t e et od it s rett easy. As you can tell from the laundry list of i ro e ents t e P ur o is a whole lot more than just a Dynamic with a 4” wider suspension kit. This is also i ediatel noticea le t e first ti e ou drive it. Right out of the gate, and before we even got into the rougher terrain, we noticed how much smoother the drivetrain is. It s a uieter and ou don t feel it in your feet or the steering wheel. The bigger tires and where they are going is also much more visible with the wider set up. You can see the tire much better while driving, but it will also throw that much more roost your direction, without e tended fender ares. e factor o ti i ed clutc in P settin s and throttle mapping are where the car really shines over any other UTV, with a long tra el it added to it. en it tires it never feels sluggish, power is always on ta and it s co forta le to aneu er through obstacles. e first turn is an e e o ener as ell. The extra width adds a lot of stability, but also loosens up the car a little as well. We

felt it was a little skatie in hardpack turns, but the increased stability still makes it an i ro e ent. In uic er ore a ressive driving situations, you will love that they kept the shorter wheelbase, but in a sand wash or really high speed stuff, it ould a e een nice to see a wheelbase increase. When you get into the rough stuff is when you really begin to appreciate the extra wheel travel. As you push the machine, you will come into stuff that you think is going to either violently bottom the shocks, or the bottom of the car, and it does neither. 16” of ground clearance is a lot more than any of us are really used to, and the longer travel suspension truly soaks up anything you throw its way. oo s and s uare ed ed u s are t is u s forte and it definitel

eats them better than any previous includin t e ones e e uilt it aftermarket suspension. The one and only downfall is again, the shorter wheelbase in the higher speed whoops, where it feels a little ore acti e t an a lon er or a four seater chassis. This is a very minor complaint, and the combination of bigger tires and great, long travel suspension on a stoc ac ine ill a e ou uic l forget about it. Overall comfort is also greatly improved with bigger tires and longer travel. You can literally hammer rough terrain for ours and ou don t feel t e sa e amount of abuse that you would in a standard P c assis. is is a i er deal than most realize, as it just makes for a more enjoyable day.

Final Thoughts

This is a great machine that will undou tedl sell ell. Pro a l a near perfect machine for the dunes, desert, or e en t e racetrac . It a ears to e a whole lot more durable than previous enerations ut ti e ill trul tell. Polaris definitel as an ans er to t e it this re-design, and we can only imagine what lies ahead if the rumors of a completely new machine are true. 66

IN

2015, the trail proven, workhorse Rubicon was completely re-engineered for increased trail comfort. The Honda Rubicon was reliable, predictable, and capable in every way, but with its solid rear axle, the one area it lacked in was trail comfort. Honda engineers developed a new Rubicon chassis to work with its new Independent Rear Suspension or “IRS”. IRS proved to be a huge upgrade to the Rubicon, with much smoother suspension and a major boost in ground clearance. Sub models were soon to follow, with options for EPS and the DCT transmission.

HONDA RUBICON DCT DELUXE

The DCT Deluxe Rubicon model is the latest, all-in Rubicon model with all the bells and whistles you want in a trail friendly, workhorse ATV. Well refined and well-equipped, the Honda Rubicon DCT Deluxe has it all, IRS, DCT, ESP, EPS, and a manual locking front differential. What all this means is that you get all the options you need for work and play, without a huge HP, gas guzzling powerplant that most people may never use anyway.

72

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 1

THE RUBICON MOTOR

The super reliable, 475cc, single cylinder engine is longitudinally mounted in the Rubicon’s frame. The engine is also rubber mounted for increased comfort through minimized vibration. This proven Honda design allows a direct shat drive, eliminating the need for power robbing, 90° changes in the drivetrain. The liquid cooled motor is also fuel injected for easy starting and the best possible performance at any altitude or temperature. While it is no monster, the Rubicon still exhibits plenty of power for any chores around the Ranch, and enough mid-range and top end power to be fun on the trail. The low gear option will help to manage any technical trail obstacles that might come its way.

THE DCT TRANSMISSION

The Rubicon’s transmission is called an Automatic Dual Clutch style because it can still be electronically shifted (ESP) through five gears with the buttons mounted on the handlebars, or can be switched to a fully automatic option with another handlebar mounted switch. Working with the Rubicon, its full-auto mode is brainless, and it can still accomplish any task you throw its way. Aggressive sport or trail riding is fun in both modes, but we found that when pushing it hard, the auto-tranny would often search or scavenge for the proper gear, whereas with ESP, you are in total control. For aggressive trail riding, the ESP is a nobrainer for extracting every last ounce of the Rubicon’s power. EPS shifting is precise and quick, but it does require a lot more paying attention and work to keep it in the ideal gear. Accessing reverse is pretty simple, but will take a little getting used to. The Rubicon also has a Low gear selector located on the left fender for maintaining low speeds in the rocks, or getting unstuck.

DIFF LOCK AND EPS

The Rubicon was the first Honda ATV to get a locking differential. It is accessed by a handlebar mounted switch, and it truly provides the grabbing and pulling for traction that you really need when it comes to very extreme terrain. Whether in the nastiest of rocks or the deepest mud, a locking differential can make you attempt the unthinkable, or even conquer the unconquerable. Another great thing about the Rubicon Deluxe’s locking front differential is that it is paired with EPS. Handling and steering control has always been the downfall with a lock-

74

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 1

ing differential, and with the advances in Honda’s electronic power steering, it’s a non-issue. You still wouldn’t want to trail ride all day with it engaged, but you can definitely leave it on for that entire rocky riverbed, or on again, off again hill climb. In 2wd or 4wd, the Honda’s EPS has been developed and refined to reduce steering effort, as well as kickback or negative feedback. This steering damper-like effect is as impressive as ever, and really makes us want EPS on every machine we ride anymore.

IT IS WAY PLUSHER AND YOU SEEM TO MISS A LOT MORE OF THE ROCKS, ROOTS, ETC.

atvworld atvworldmag.com

RUBICONS IRS SUSPENSION The IRS suspension is a huge improvement over Honda’s previous, straight axle design in rough terrain. It is way plusher and you seem to miss a lot more of the rocks, roots, etc. with the extremely increased ground clearance. On faster fire-road type terrain, the IRS still exhibits more body roll than the straight axle, and is a little less stable. The anti-sway bar undoubtedly helps to combat this effect, but it’s still noticeable and worth mentioning. While sliding around on dirt roads is more predictable on the straight axle equipped machines, it in no way outweighs the benefits and comfort improvements of the IRS, everywhere else you will ride.

AS READY TO WORK AS EVER For a mid-bore 4x4, the Honda Rubicon still carries an impressive tow capacity. With 600 kg towing capacity and another 130 kg carrying capacity on the racks, this little workhorse can carry well over twice its own weight. Pretty impressive, and that’s not even counting the rider. What’s even more impressive than just capacity numbers is how well the Rubicon can actually work with these loads. The powder coated steel racks feature well thoughtout tie down points, the shocks are adjustable for heavier loads, and the auto transmission has no issue with pulling a trailer either. The handlebar mounted, extra third light is even on a separate switch, so that you can turn it off if you’re carrying a load on the front rack.

WHAT DO WE THINK The Honda Rubicon DCT Deluxe is a great little 4x4 ATV that can work all week, and still bring a smile to your face on the weekend. They are proven to be unbelievably reliable, and with proper maintenance, will probably last forever. Suspension and overall performance are very good, but neither to the point of overly impressive. There are probably other machines out there that could best the Rubicon in either of these areas, but as the overall package goes, it just does everything pretty darn well. The Rubicon has truly been refined to near-perfection, and its nimble handling will impress just about anyone. It’s compact, but not cramped for riders of any size. The fit and finish, and quality of a Honda is typically second to none, and this machine will probably prove to be an investment that can be passed on to future generations, like the ATC 90s, Trail 90s and XR Dirtbikes we grew up with.

Whether you’re looking for an addition to the stable, to replace that twenty-year-old Rancher, or just one machine that can do it all, the Rubicon will impress the working class rider, both in the field and on the trail. It’s capable, comfortable, and just sporty enough to bring a smile to your face, over and over again.

SCORE OF THE MONTH

GET WET

Company: Finntrail Products: Wader, Jacket & Boot Combo Kit The Score With the winter snow melting away and track kits being removed in place of wheels at ATV World HQ that means its almost our favorite time of year to ride in the Northeast; during the spring thaw. The riding temperature in the spring is near perfect. As the days start to get the longer, the crisp bite of arctic winter air is replaced by warming rays of spring sun. The snow melts away and leaves behind terrain composition of loamy soil and mud holes. It also isn’t hot enough yet to warrant dust. What you’re left with is riding conditions that we prefer more than any other. As the first spring ride approached we took winter riding gear down to the basement and hauled the spring and summer gear up to the garage. It was then we came across a score from way back in October at the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show. Near the end of the three-day show weekend we came across a company new to the North American market, Finntrail. After a long chat about their product line and their background we left the show with their Aquamaster Red Gear Set in anticipation of the spring ride. 82

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 1

Who is Finntrail? Finntrail has over 10 years of experience designing and producing wading gear for a variety of industries. Just because we’ve never heard of them in North American ATV market doesn’t this is their first foray into keeping people dry. They’ve continuously pushed the limits of their products by testing new materials in their waders as well as new design features. The company actually developed the product right under your nose. Using a variety of riders in Canada, Europe and Russia contributed to the design of their current product line. In fact, these guys are so confident their product they even offer a six-month warranty and two whopping years of free product servicing. That’s competitive with the coverage of some bikes these days. The Finntrail dealer stretches across Europe from Germany east to Kazakhstan and even as far North as Finland. This tells us they’ve got a product designed for a wide variety of environments. Currently in North America at the time of this article, their product is online available via their website: www.finntrail.com. Aquamaster Details The Aquamaster Red was the only set available when we picked up our suit, however since then the folks at Finntrail have released several new combo options for you to pick from. The Aquasmaster Red may be a three-piece suit but I wouldn’t recommend wearing it to a wedding. The suit consists of a jacket, waders, and boots. Now we know what you’re thinking… how am I going to stay dry if the boots are separate from the waders? Well the waders are actually equipped with

durable rubber boots with ultra-cushioned neoprene inner soles that actually slide into the separate standard riding boots. With this setup instead of feeling like traditional waders where the boots are falling off your feet you actually feel as though you’re wearing standard riding gear and boots. You maintain the mobility you’re used to in your dry weather setup but if the opportunity presents itself you can hit any water hole and know you won’t need to finish the ride with the awful feeling of wet boots. Staying Dry When we finally got to hit the trail with this setup this spring we have to admit, we were hesitant. Would the boots get water logged and heavy? Would there be leaks? The answer to each of those questions was a simple “Nope”. The gear was put to the test immediately as we navigated the snowmelt and the rain but sure enough we stayed dry, comfortable and mobile in our three piece Aquamaster suit. We even appreciated the included waterproof carrying bag for our phone. Being comfortable and dry is the top priority during wet season rides and the Aquamaster set by Finntrail certainly did the job. Usually when you’re suiting up, you have a debate with yourself; do I want to stay dry? Do I want maximum mobility? Well for the first time in our experience you can certainly have both. Learn More As mentioned, currently the only place you can purchase Finntrail in North America is on their website at Finntrail.com. Their customer service team will work closely with you taking several body measurements to make sure you get the perfect fitting gear set and can hit the trail dry this spring.
