GET READY
A
nother season for ATV WORLD is complete, and we’re already rolling on to the next one. The time sure does fly when you’re having fun. The winter months will be coming to an end, days are already feeling longer and in a few weeks we’ll be experiencing the melt. This is the best time to be an off-road enthusiast. A lot of our rides and events start to line up with the snow and ice making way for puddles and mud, and I can’t wait to have to wash my buggy again. It feels like it’s been so long since I’ve seen mud. Ice fishing was great on Simcoe, but I’m ready to get rid of those tracks and get back to wheels and tuck my trusted plow away until next winter. Many of the guys I ride with are like bears when it comes
to ATV’ing. They’ll hibernate in the winter months, so it will be great to catch up and ride with them again. At any rate, I’m excited to see, ride and ‘fix stuff’ with them again. We’re already planning rides and taking count of all of our spring gear. We’ll draw straws for a few big installs that you’ll read about in coming issues. We have some nights in the shop that can be as entertaining as a weekend ride. We appreciated all the photo submissions that we have received this year. If you have a photo of you’d like to share with us, please email it to info@atvworldmag.com. If you make our “Clicked” page, and find yourself in print, we’ll send you a t-shirt! I hope to see you out there!

01 POLARIS SWEEPS PRO STOCK AND WINS PRO TURBO AT WORCS OPENER
By the end of the weekend Polaris riders walked away with two wins and five podiums at the Primm, NV race. Ronnie Anderson was the big winner and talk of the track winning the Pro Stock class piloting his RZR RS1 with teammates Matthew Hancock and and Beau Baron rounding out the top 3. In the Pro Turbo class Anderson took home another win while fellow Polaris driver Cody Bradbury took the final podium spot.
02 BLOCK’S BITCHIN RAPTORTRAX
If a Ford Raptor just isn’t enough we suggest you look at Ken Block’s RaptorTRAX. There’s a lot more going on here then meets the eye here. Hoonigan Racing’s did a lot more than just replace the tires with some tracks. A Whipple supercharger was installed to help bring the 6.2L V8 to produce a needed 650+ HPs to help move the 1300 additional pounds of track system to keep the RaptorTRAX moving well in the snow. A beefy new suspension was also needed to accommodate the tracks. Other obvious parts that were installed include a serious roll bar some racing seats and of course a bitchin audio system. If you want one of these you’re going to need a seriously fat wallet jammed with Benjamins to even come close to Block’s RaptorTRAX.
03 CAN-AM ANNOUNCES RACING TEAM Quickly scanning through Can-AM’s racers you would think that you were reading the latest podium finish. The UTV Class stages early AM, based on Saturday’s qualifying times; it will be a very long day and take most of it to finish.
KOH w/ATV World Magazine King Of The Hammers is an incredible week of Off Road Racing that combines intense Rock Crawling with conventional desert style racing. 2019 marks the 13th year of this incredible spectator friendly event, and it continues to grow each and every year. “Hammertown” as they’ve dubbed it becomes a virtual city out of nothing, with over 100,000 spectators showing up to camp throughout the weekend. UTVs have been a part of this crazy event for the past 8 years and class has seen incredible growth. The intense rains on Friday/ Saturday had little to no effect on the record breaking entry list, as Sunday’s UTV Race saw 112 teams entered. The KOH UTV race was the first race of the week, and the entry list included multiple big name drivers from other classes like Ultra 4 and even Trophy Truck. Drivers like Robby Gordon, Bailey Cole, the Campbells, and even Red Bulls Bryce Menzies were racing for both extra track time and a shot at another Class Podium. Overall, the racing is top notch, and the event provides an incredible opportunity for fans and enthusiasts to experience and view the competition. 24

Common word for the Polaris RZR XP 4 Turbo S is Nasty, not the dictionary definition, the millennial version; this 4 seater will give even the riders in the backseat a thrill they won’t forget. The Polaris RZR XP 4 Turbo S is for the family/friends that like pure sport performance with its 168hp Pro Star Turbo, Fox 3.0 Internal Bypass Live Valve Shocks, 72” stance, and 16” Ground Clearance. Almost the same length and horsepower as a Honda Civic, the Can-am Maverick X3 MAX X RS Turbo R is a beast of its own. LT450R Voltage Check

Winch Release
3
It has come to our attention on more than one occasion that the Suzuki LT450R will not run properly as the battery starts getting old, and will no longer hold optimum voltage. Your machine might start with an old battery that only holds 11-12 volts, but the fuel pump and EFI system require about 12.2 or better to function properly.
Brandon Sims has gotten himself on the KOH podium two years in a row with this sweet little pulley set-up, allowing him to disengage the free-spool clutch from inside the vehicle.

Extraction Mats
4
An exoskeleton type cage design like the one shown is the best way to keep your UTV in one piece when rolling it. This, or the old fashioned “Keeping it on four wheels and upright,” seems to work as well.
These heavy duty plastic extraction mats are getting increasingly popular in the automotive 4X4 world, and there was probably 15 - 20 UTVs carrying them for the KOH race. They’re simply placed underneath the tires that are spinning and looking for traction.
Multi-Purpose Ramp
5
Handy Crank Press Tool
7
This guy started the race without extraction mats, and then made do with this aluminum loading ramp he picked up somewhere along the way. This can be used in the same manner, or even as a transition ramp for winching up a steep rock face.
A stubby chisel makes the perfect wedge for pressing a crank into the main bearings. Slightly wedged-in, opposite the lower rod pinkie shown, will keep your crank from collapsing together, while you press it into the main bearing/case half.
Hi-Lift on a Budget

Winch @ the Ready
8
An automotive scissor jack from the junkyard makes an excellent UTV jack, you will just need to add a spacer for the additional height. This ingenious racer even added a wooden platform to the bottom, accounting for the extra height, and doubling as a jack plate for soft terrain or sand.
KOH racers would save time by either wrapping the bumper with, or throwing the excess winch rope into the passenger’s side of the cab versus winding it all the way back on the spool. Some even started with enough rope out of the winch for their first pull. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 6

The additional integration of the mobile radio allows for seamless communication between other cars in your group or even a base radio in camp. The 60 watt Rugged RM-60 we opted for gives us 20-30 miles of range depending on terrain.
2 Adhere the cutting template sticker to the dash, below the toggle switches. Note that the angled ends should line up perfectly with the edge of the dash panel. Make sure it is centered, and pay attention to the indicator marks. If using the cut out template version, we recommend taping it in place. We used a sharpie to mark the cut line, but you could also leave the self-adhesive type template in place, and cut to its edge.

3 You will be cutting along the bottom of the template on the red dotted line, (or on your sharpie line) to remove the pillar section. Make sure to follow the angles on the side, it is not a completely straight cut. We used a grinder with a cut off wheel, but a hack saw works equally as well.
5 Line up top of mount to the line on the dash below the rocker switches. Use vise grips or an assistant to hold the dash and mount in place, then drill the left and right holes with the 1/4” drill bit. Take the two Torx screws back out and remove the mounting bracket/plate.
4 Remove the 2 Torx T-30 bolts from between the console pillars to remove and discard the piece you cut out. Set the front plate/ mounting bracket in place of the piece you removed, and secure it with the same two Torx screws.
6 Remove the plastic panel that sits behind where the radios will sit. It is held in with two Torx screws and two plastic pop rivets on the passenger side. You will be cutting a 2”x5” slot in it for radio clearance and cable routing. Use the provided template and a cut off wheel, reinstall once the access hole is complete. We found that the hole needed to be a little higher than illustrated in Rugged’s installation image, and ended up removing the material above our initial cut out later in the install.

INSTALLING A RUGGED RADIO’S COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN THE X3
7 Attach the intercom & radio using the mounting tabs on back of the mount plate. Feed intercom through the face of the mount, then slide the bolt heads in the mounting channel. The fit is tight, but works well once everything is lined up properly. You will need the 7mm wrench to tighten the inside screw/bolts securing the radio. Mount the start/stop button to the radio mount plate with the included spacer ring on the back of the button, before the plastic factory spacer and nut.
8 Remove the top center console cover and begin running cables from the back of the intercom and through your center console. You will be running the power cables, antenna coax cable, and the 12’ headset cables. It is ever so important to separate the coax cable from the other cables to avoid crossover interference/noise. We recommend separating the coax cable completely by running up the A or B pillar to mount on the roof. You will also want to separate your helmet audio cables from the power cables within the center console.
10 9 Connect your power leads straight to the battery, and not to the stock bus bar or fuse panel. In our case, we connected both intercom and radio leads to a Rugged Audio Filter, which then connects to the positive and negative battery posts. Our Rugged set up with the audio filter was extremely plug and play with preinstalled connector plugs, with plenty of length on the cables and zero cutting, crimping, or wire stripping required. We routed the coax cable behind the glove box, down the frame tube below the passenger doorway, and then up the B pillar to the corner of the roof. We had to remove the four Torx screws on the plastic panel near the A pillar to cleanly route the cable inside the dash, and down to the lower passenger doorway frame tube. 46
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 6
Connect your driver and co-driver PTT button plugs to their respective ports and cleanly route them to their locations. Be sure to leave enough slack in the driver side cable to allow for turning of the steering wheel. Plug the start button in, and then slide the mount plate assembly into its place. Re-install the two Torx bolts and install the supplied mounting bolts into the1/4” drilled holes from step 5.
11
12 We drilled a 3/8” hole in the stock roof and installed the antenna directly to the roof. Rugged Radio antennas will work fine on a plastic roof, but they will perform even better if you have a metal or aluminum roof.
13 Once everything is mounted, routed, and in place, you can install the optional side panels. You will remove the two plastic pop rivets on the passenger side, install the plate and secure with the pop rivets. The front of this panel and the driver side panel will use the supplied Allen bolts.
14 The helmet audio plugs will route up the back and attach to the top of cage with enough of a pigtail to reach each helmet. Carefully reinstall the top to the center console, and connect the positive and negative power leads directly to the corresponding battery posts. You should now be ready for communication. olaris just introduced two new machines, claiming to deliver an unmatched combination of both performance and value amongst the 72-inch side-byside segment. On the 29TH of January, press releases were made public on the RZR XP Turbo S Velocity, and RZR XP 4 Turbo S Velocity models, with 3.0 Walker Evans Velocity shocks. At this same time, ATV World got a last minute invite to come drive one, at their King of the Hammers demo the following week. As you would expect, we jumped at the chance and shifted a few plans to make it happen.

JUST WHAT IS THE NEW POLARIS RZR XP TURBO S VELOCITY The RZR XP Turbo S was Polaris’s no-holds-barred answer to CAN-AM’s 72” wide X3 X RS. Polaris customers had been salivating for a wider, long travel desert and dune ready machine for the past few years. When they finally got it, it was built on the already top of the line, Dynamix platform with every bell and whistle you can imagine. The Dynamix edition features FOX’s Live Valve suspension, with computer controlled valving adjustments that react to the terrain, and your driving. This system is proving to provide 50

incredible handling and a game changing driving experience, but it’s an expensive upgrade in comparison to conventional shocks. The first Dynamic equipped Turbo S entry into the 72” wide desert & dune market was a complete success. While at first glance it appears that Polaris had just slapped a longer travel, wider suspension kit on the previous year’s Dynamix car, it was indeed much more than this. While it shares the same chassis and power plant, it is clutched for, and comes with 32” tires,

the suspension components made with better steel and reinforced to be much stronger, and it gets an incredibly durable “isolated front diff”. The Turbo S is arguably the best equipped, and best handling stock UTV on the planet, and its biggest downfall and consumer complaint is its price. Combining the expense of Dynamic Suspension and its 7” Ride Command Unit with all these other upgrades has the retail up to $34.5K for a 2 seater. A four seater with this platform would have been over 37 grand, making them both the most expensive 2 & 4 seat, stock UTVs to ever hit the market as well. The RZR XP Turbo S is unquestionably, a bad@$$ machine, but there’s a lot of people priced out of owning one. There also seems to be a large number of potential customers that desire, and could utilize this wider, long travel platform, but might not really need, or want to spring for the Dynamic Live Valve suspension system. Racers for example, will often fine tune, re-valve, or all together replace the OEM shocks for their own brand preference. It’s definitely not cost effective for
this customer to be paying for this incredible, yet quite spendy system, if they’re not going to use it.This is where the RZR XP Turbo S Turbo Velocity comes into the picture. The RZR XP Turbo S Velocity offers Polaris customers the same beefy, 72” wide, long travel suspension components, the stronger isolated differential, the 32” tires, and the improved clutching. The Velocity model still gets the stronger axles, high clearance control arms, and the lower reinforced ROPS cage. The key difference is that it comes with Walker Evans Velocity Series Needle shocks and a slightly more basic 4” LCD “Rider Information Center”. While the Ride Command unit is downgraded, it still gets the same really cool, updated Dual Analog Speedo & Tachometer. You will notice a few other small niceties missing to help bring down the final ticket, but they are mostly accessories that many consumers prefer to personalize their machines with from the aftermarket. The most notable would be the aluminum roof and the plastic lower door inserts. We also noticed the LED “Fang” on the grill has been replaced with a plastic insert and the D shaped Sparco steering wheel is gone.

TAKING OFF OUT OF CAMP FEELS EXACTLY LIKE THE TURBO S WITH THE SPOT ON CLUTCHING FOR ITS 32” TIRES AND ITS QUICKER STEERING RATIO AND EPS SETTINGS FEEL PERFECT AND CONTROLLABLE.
THE ULTIMATE COMBINATION OF PERFORMANCE AND VALUE The Velocity Edition’s retail is nearly $3000 dollars less, in comparison to the Dynamix equipped Turbo S model, but here’s the kicker. The Walker Evans Velocity shocks that come on it are not a mass produced, budget shock. They are actually the same fully adjustable,
race ready, aluminum shocks that Walker Evans sells to racers and the public. The rears feature massive 3.0-inch bodies, and the front end gets the 2.5” bodies. They are set up to provide a plush ride through small chop, and increased stability through high-speed whoops.
DRIVE TIME As per usual with any new machine from Polaris, we were excited as ever to get some seat time in the latest creation. Getting into the new machine, you take notice that it doesn’t have the accessory roof that comes on the original Turbo S, but it was overcast and that was the last time it was even thought of. Buckling in, you’ll notice the same great TURBO S seats and seating position is still coupled with the same comfortable, new retractable 4-point harnesses. The missing Sparco steering wheel is a bummer, but in reality the stocker is still pretty comfort-
able. The big 7 inch Ride Command display is gone, but I personally never really paid attention to it. The ride group tracking GPS feature will probably be what you’ll miss most versus having the display. Taking off out of camp feels exactly like the Turbo S with the spot on clutching for its 32” tires, and its quicker steering ratio and EPS settings feel perfect and controllable. Unfortunately, our drive time before press was limited to a 30 minute demo loop, and we can’t wait to get up close and personal with it again. But on that note, the demo ride we did do consisted

of some amazing, widely mixed terrain and trail obstacles. Initial acceleration is almost breathtaking, especially for being on 32” tires. Bombing up a sand wash, it will quickly get you into the 80+ mph range, which is probably faster than anyone in their right mind should be driving a UTV. It handles the speed with ease and confidence, but we did notice a slightly loose, or ‘skatey’ feeling at wide open throttle. This was in sand and as it turned out, they had a ton of air pressure in the Maxixis tries to avoid flats with the general public, who were also demo riding the machines. The wash had multiple option lines with relatively deep whoops, and the Walker Evans Velocity shocks proved their worth in every way. As long as 54

you’re willing to stay committed to the throttle, the car stays level and soaks up massive abuse. Heat fade or bottoming was never an issue, or even a concern. The Walker equipped car also turns pretty darn well too. It doesn’t have fancy comput-
ers adding compression to the outside corners, but it is a full 72” wide, race car quality platform. The sway bars do their job and the shocks keep the car planted

WE HIT A SMALL LAKEBED SECTION AND I’M PRETTY SURE I SAW THE HIGHEST SPEEDOMETER NUMBER I’VE EVER SEEN ON A UTV.
and predictable, regardless of entry speed. We hit an off camber trail that was a little narrow for the S, and was probably a motorcycle trail in the not so distant past. Even on a skinnier trail where you really have to concentrate on tire placement, the advantages and stability of the wider car is appreciated at the speeds we were driving. A handful of small boulders littered the trail, and the added ground clearance shines through over what might have been an “oh crap” moment in a lower car. You will find that you really appreciate the 32” tires more than you realize. Sure you can add them to a standard XP, but you will have to clutch for them, and inner fender clearance will be an issue, depending on whether you run aftermarket suspension or not. We hit a small lakebed section, and I’m pretty sure I saw the highest speedometer number I’ve ever seen on a UTV. We have raced the standard RZR Turbo in Baja for a couple years now, and although it will get over 80 MPH pretty easily, we find that anything over 75 mph seems to be the clutch belt failure point. I couldn’t swear to it, but I’m pretty sure I looked down to 87 mph on the Turbo S Velocity dash. The lakebed pretty much ended our limited test ride, but we are extremely looking forward to more time in loaner in the near future. The Velocity option is a great machine for anyone looking to avoid that last 3 thousand bucks off an amazing machine. It is also the perfect option for anyone that wants the full on desert/dune/race width car, but might want to personalize it themselves.

It’s been a few years since we got our we got our first hands introduction and experience with CAN-AM’s Maverick X3.
While it seems like just yesterday, it’s actually been a little over three years since CAN-AM surprised the entire industry with an all new machine instead of just updating the current one. The brand new X3 not only hit the UTV market as overall HP leader with 154HP, but its all new chassis gave it a magical 9 inches of additional wheelbase over the current competition. Complementing the X3’s massive HP and its new chassis was the introduction of the 72” wide X RS model. Up until this day, if you wanted a “Race Width”, longer travel machine, it took somewhere in the neighborhood of a $9,000-$10,000 investment in A-Arms, Trailing Arms, Shocks, Axles, and Brake lines. Now you could finance one right off the dealer floor.

THE
press launch for those original X3s was in Ensenada, BC, putting in two days of solid driving, and covering most of the Baja 500 course. It was as fitting of an intro as you could ever ask for, and a great place to draw an opinion on all things X3. The 72”wide, long travel Maverick XR S was absolutely built for this type of terrain, and the other 64” models were equally as impressive. Three hundred and fifty plus miles was probably the most any of us had ever ridden during an intro, and regardless of the dust, we wore smiles for every minute of it. Heading north after the fun was over, we were left with a great overall impression of CAN-AM’s newest UTVs. All three models we tested in Baja were phenomenal; they ran hard for two solid days, and were proving to be incredibly reliable. In fact, we only saw two CVT belts break, with close to twenty cars driving somewhere around 7,000 collective miles. Handling was really good as well,
58
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 6
especially for a first model year release. This was a reliable, high performance UTV with the most HP, and quite possibly the best handling in the industry. What wasn’t to like? And that wasn’t even considering the double throw me down, long travel X3 X RS. The 72” wide X RS was truly in a class of its own. At 72” wide and 22”/24” of wheel travel, the showroom stock X3 X RS is the equivalent of a more standard 64” RZR XP, or Maverick with an aftermarket +5” per side long travel kit. As we already mentioned, this is a solid 10 grand investment, and it only sets you back about 3-4 thousand extra for the upgraded model. For those of you that haven’t driven a true, long travel set up UTV, it really does make a pretty big difference. The added width gives it stability, the additional wheel travel allows you to hit way bigger obstacles without bottoming, and the longer shocks allow for more controlled damping that just flat out lets your car handle in the faster, rougher stuff. Long Travel on a UTV is very similar
WE LEFT THAT INITIAL INTRO THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED WITH THE NEW MAVERICK X3. I PERSONALLY WAS EXTREMELY EXCITED ABOUT IT to putting wide arms and good shocks on an ATV. Or, in direct UTV comparison, maybe like the difference from the slightly smaller RZR XP900 to that first 64” XP 1000. It just feels like a way more capable and forgiving set up that’s ready to take on anything in its path.
atvworld atvworldmag.com
ONE UPPING THE COMPETITION We left that initial intro thoroughly impressed with the new Maverick X3. Personally, I was extremely excited about it and couldn’t wait to acquire a loaner, and form some deeper opinions while thoroughly reviewing it. Big plans for a build, and even thoughts of maybe racing one were floating through my mind on the daily. As luck would have it, availability, scheduling and conflicting schedules kept me from getting one right away. Even though we didn’t have our own X3 loaner to test, the vehicle class stayed anything but stale. CAN-AM’s title as the Horsepower King, with its 154 ponies, was extremely short lived as Polaris rebutted almost instantly with news of their second gen. Turbo XP that among a few other upgrades, was turned up to an impressive 168 HP. Polaris might have had the immediate answer to the power dominance game that year, but they still didn’t have anything to truly compete with the “Race Width”, long travel X3 X RS. Overall, they had a great handling machine with continually improved suspension settings, but it was still the same 64” wide machine, and the X3 X RS was on a different playing field in the deep whoops and high speed, desert type terrains. As for the X3 horsepower deficit, two could play at this game, and CAN-AM engineers twisted the 2018 X3 Turbos up to 172 HP. This massive HP increase has the X3 pulling down 0-60 mph times that are also making it the quickest stock UTV we’ve seen to date. As one would expect, 2017 was a banner year for the CAN-AM X3. They won multiple Championships and dominated in nearly every form of UTV racing. For 2018, they not only regained the HP King title, but also began developing terrain specific
models like the rock crawling X3 X RC Turbo R. The biggest news on this RC model was CAN-AM abandoning the long standing Visco-Lok front differential, and developing their new Smart-Lok Technology. This true fully lockable, on-the-fly front differential features electronicallycontrolled automatic modes, or the push of a button can get you preset, intelligent calibrations for your specific type of riding. “Smart mode” will provide maximum traction in any condition, with 4wd Trail ACTIV ROCK mode for minimized slip, so you can concentrate on driving without worry of breaking traction. The 4WD Trail mode option uses front wheel speed sensors to identify wheel slip, and synchronize both wheels when needed. While driving, you can also fully lock the front diff for direct, evenly transmitted power to all four corners. Many manufacturers including CAN-AM with their Visko-Lok in the past, feel that this isn’t really necessary with whatever “Smart” system they have developed, but we can tell you that there are some extreme situations where you just can’t beat the reliability and driving performance of a completely locked up differential.
PROTECTION IS ANOTHER ONE OF THE X3 X RS STRONG POINTS, IT COMES STOCK WITH A HIGH QUALITY, POLY ROOF THAT FEATURES A RAISED PEAK AND FUNCTIONAL GUTTERS TO KEEP YOU AS DRY AS POSSIBLE.

THE 2019 X3 X RS TURBO R The newest Flagship X3 X RS Turbo R gets the Smart-Lok technology, fully lockable differential with Trail Mode for increased steering at higher speeds, and a Trail ACTIV mode that maximizes steering performance under aggressive riding. High engine torque or increased vehicle speed is sensed and Smart-Lok progressively engages (locks) the front end until you lift from the throttle. This creates super smooth steering and predictable response. You can also opt for 2WD, or even 4wd with full diff. lock as an option when things start to get a little hairy. The 2019 X RS is once again available in Platinum Satin, Triple Black, or this stellar looking Gold, Red & Hyper Silver that we got for a demo unit. That’s right, CAN-AM upgrades their already stellar flagship X3, and we finally got our hands on one for reviews and an upcoming build project. No need to gloat! But we were pretty excited to put some real deal mileage on this thing, and see just how good it really is. First off, we should mention that the new color scheme looks pretty good in pictures, but off the hook in person. This is definitely the best looking UTV we’ve ever had in our garage. Super aggressive body lines, 30” tires on Factory bead locks and an incredible stance; it truly looks like a full-blown race car. The super sturdy quarter doors latch securely and provide a safe and protected feeling for the occupants. Getting into the X3 is comfortable as well, the doors open fully out the way and there is plenty of space, even for the driver (editor) that could easily skip a meal or two. The seats are definitely more comfortable and supportive than the competition; not quite as good as an aftermarket suspension seat, but pretty close. The seating position is a lot more driver intuitive than the competition as well. You actually sit down into the machine for a lower CG, better protection, and a more aggressive, total control feeling. In a way, it really feels more like you’re riding in 60
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 15 • ISSUE 6
it than on it. The harness is pretty good too, for a far safer and contained feeling that’s better than standard seat belts, and easier to adjust and use than the other harness attempts from the competition. Sitting in a completely stock machine feels a whole lot more like a race car than most other UTVs, kind of similar to Textron’s new Robby Gordon Wildcat XX. Protection is another one of the X3 X RS strong points. It comes stock with a high quality, poly roof that features a raised peak and functional gutters to keep you as dry as possible. A heavy duty, race quality HMW (high molecular weight) skid plate protects the bottom, and an integrated front bumper protects the radiator area. The X3’s 14” bead-lock wheels with 30 inch Maxis Bighorn 2.0 tires are proven to be extremely durable, and if you go flat, it’s much easier to ride back to camp with beadlocks holding the tire to the wheel, than it is on conventional wheels. In all reality, the XR S not only comes with a suspension system you might otherwise buy from the aftermarket, but also real deal accessories like the roof and skid plate that won’t need to be ditched for better quality replacements.
IN STOCK FORM, THIS LATEST X3 IS HANDS DOWN THE FASTEST UTV YOU CAN BUY. IT MAKES A TON OF HORSEPOWER, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT’S SPOT ON CLUTCHING PUTS IT TO THE GROUND WHEN IT MATTERS MOST.
atvworld atvworldmag.com
DRIVING IT It looks great in the garage, and it’s fun to talk about, but the ride is what this thing is really all about! Driving the X3 is a treat right from the exhaust note when you push the start button, to trailering it for the ride home. Sitting in it, the visibility of the tires being outside the chassis line feels like a class ten or high end sand car. While driving the X RS, that same visibility becomes a pretty valuable asset, as you have a highly increased visual perception of where your tires are going to travel. Excuses are gone with this thing; if you’re running into stuff, you probably shouldn’t be driving. On a motocross or
short course track, you will appreciate this visibility when setting up for a berm, rutted turn, or even a blown out jump face. In stock form, this latest X3 is hands down the fastest UTV you can buy. It makes a ton of horsepower, but more importantly, its spot on clutching puts it to the ground when it matters most. This clutching is based around CAN-AM’s high-performance QRS-X transmission that’s calibrated to eliminate virtually any and all turbo lag. It’s also Can-Am’s most durable UTV clutch yet. You jump on the gas, and it flat out accelerates like a madman. The lightweight Bighorn tires seem

to find forward traction in any type of terrain. They are reasonably good on hardpack, really good in the loam, and feature decent clean-out in the mud. Aired down, they will also work exceptionally well in the sand dunes. The X3 Turbo’s 4.4 second 0-60 mph time is not only faster than any other stock UTV, but even impressive in the automotive world. The X3’s clutching is cooled with what CAN-AM calls advanced airflow dynamics, three oversized, out-of-the-way intakes feed the engine and CVT with clean, cool air, keeping temperatures to a minimum. The oversized clutch intake is located right behind the driver’s head for the best chance at always scavenging clean air. This same “well thought out” and functional design also brings us to one of the only complaints we feel worth pointing out. While it’s obviously very functional, the same oversized intake that funnels clean air in, also resonates out clutch noise like a megaphone, and it’s pointed right at the drivers head. We’re not sure if the X3 clutch is really overly noisy, or if it’s just the megaphone effect, but it seems pretty loud, and can really start to wear on you on a long ride. Speaking of long rides, we’ve taken ourX3 for a couple of pretty extensive rides, and while the above mentioned noise is a valid complaint, the driving position, seat containment/bolstering, and overall suspension comfort and plushness make for a really enjoyable day. Our couple hour ride to dinner is followed by excitement for the ride home, versus dreading it because you’re feeling beat up or worn out. The X3 XRS long travel suspension is coupled with FOX 3.0 and 2.5 Podium RC2 Piggyback shocks. They feature internal bypass technology with dual speed compression and rebound adjustments for infinite tuning, without the need to upgrade or even re-valve them. These are the same top of the line, multi-spring shocks with crossovers and threaded preload that you will find on top race builds, in any type of UTV racing. The supplied shocks are as good as it gets, and adjustable enough to make even the pickiest 62

racer happy. The car sits relatively low with minimal body roll, thanks to the front and rear sway bars, and still exhibits massive bump absorption and damping ability. The X3 X RS is ready for accurate, aggressive driving in any terrain. The option for 2wd, 4wd w/diff lock, Trail mode, or Trail Activ mode ensure the best possible traction and handling is available at the tip of your fingers. As with any fully locked differential, you will experience incredible traction and forward drive, but steering control is adversely affected to say the least. As for the Trail Activ mode, for aggressive driving, we honestly feel you’d be hard pressed to find a better option in any soil condition. It steers really well, and the front end will literally drag you through soft or rutted turns and terrain. All four modes can be effectively toggled between without even stopping the machine. Trail Active should be your go-to for aggressive driving and extreme terrain. The Trail mode will impress you in higher speed, smoother situations, as front wheel traction is optimized for everyday driving, and terrain. The X3 also gets a High Torque Tri-Mode version of CANAM’s Dynamic Power Steering. The DPS system gives the X3 three different levels of steering assistance, adjustable with the touch of a button, and is sure to have a setting that will impress just about any driver, in any terrain. With the DPS set to max assist, you can actually drive the X3 pretty well with the fully locked diff engaged, whereas otherwise, it’s typically a handful to do much more than slow speed rock crawling, or getting yourself out of a mud hole. While the X3 X RS is comfortable to drive at any speed, it loves to be flogged, and will truly impress you with its high speed handling and overall performance. With its ability to soak up just about anything that comes its way, it makes quick work of just about any whoops or G-outs. It is the King in the desert, and if that’s where you enjoy riding, you will be hard pressed to buy a better equipped machine.
Final Thoughts We have had nothing but great experiences in our newest X3 so far, and its performance is over the top impressive for a stock vehicle. With Polaris’ recent release of the 72” Turbo S, we can’t wait for a head to head shootout, because it’s even harder to believe that a machine this good, might have another solid competitor. We also look forward to personalizing it a bit with some in-car communications and a few other niceties. This is by far the best showroom stock, high performance desert UTV that you can buy, and it will surely impress for many other types of use as well.

YAMAHA'S WOLVERINE PROVES NARROW DOESN’T MEAN NARROW-MINDED The trail ahead is tight, narrow, and it twists and drops out of sight. Our lead rider is deep into the throttle of his ATV, but tight on his tail are a pair of ATV World testers in the $19,499 Yamaha Wolverine X2 R-Spec EPS SE. And then a pair of trees as stout as middleaged sisters from Timmins appear suddenly at the bottom of the hill—and the trail runs between the sisters. The lead ATV just makes it through. There is no time for the side-by-side to brake, or swerve (you’d just hit a different tree). The pilot and passenger share a (final?) glance before wedging the Wolverine as tightly into the trees as a log splitter plunging into hardwood. Only that’s not what happens. The Wolverine, miraculously, makes it between the trees and disaster is averted.

e’re in an era when pickup trucks have a footprint larger than the backyard pools of our youth. But Yamaha bucked the bulging trend of modern vehicles, and made its latest side-by-side narrower than the machine it replaced. It’s such an unusual move as to seem almost radical. At 59 inches side-to-side, the Wolverine is a side-by-side that fits where many machines can’t. Which made our trip through the woods, chasing an ATV, entirely more enjoyable than if the Wolverine was five inches wider.

With just shy of nine inches suspension travel front and rear, the Wolverine deftly brides the utility and performance segments. In other words, you can trail ride it without pummeling your kidneys, while sensible utility traits like a 600-pound-capacity dump bed and 2,000-pound towing capacity are maintained. The Wolverine also has plenty of power, though you’ll not mistake its thrust for a 1,000 cc-plus machine. The Yamaha’s 847 cc double-overhead-cam, paralleltwin has a 270-degree crankshaft that mimics the firing order of a V-twin, (which is why it sounds like one) while maintaining the ease-of-packaging for engineers that is the parallel twin’s major attribute. Sophisticated is the word that comes to mind when describing the Wolverine’s powerplant. The drive-by-wire throttle means that a computer intervenes between the sole of your boot and the engine, but don’t worry, you’d never know it. Throttle response is instantaneous, but not abrupt, and with rubber mounting and counterbalancing, the engine’s smoothness is commendable. Yamaha, justifiably, is proud of this achievement, and claims “Driver and passenger can enjoy full conversation at any RPM, thanks to the quietest cab and engine in the class.” It’s a boast we mostly agree with, but our test Wolverine emitted a howl from some-

where within its drivetrain that became louder as speed increased, but whose origin we could never precisely pinpoint. In our first ride on the Wolverine, (ATV World magazine, volume 15, issue 3) no such noise was noted, so perhaps our test unit led a harsh life before landing in our hands. Driveline rumblings aside, the Wolverine has refinement beyond what’s normally found in its segment. The clutching in particular, is spot on, and engagement is crisp and smooth. Allied with its speed-sensitive electric power steering, everything from mud bogs to smooth, high-speed trails are dispatched with ease. The Wolverine has been the recipient of the kind of engineering we expect from a Japanese brand. Need more proof? In the midst of hammering through knee-deep mud, on a near 40-degree day, and while other machines from other brands were overheating and spewing antifreeze dramatically into the atmosphere, the Wolverine idled calmly, with its radiator fan yet to even engage. When you’re hot and covered in mud, and just want to make it home with a minimum of fuss, you’re particularly thankful that Yamaha engineers took the time to sweat the details. 68

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT CLARK
Located in the heart of the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance (EOTA), Limerick Lake Lodge is the perfect destination if you are looking to ride for a few days, chill in , Ontario s premiere cottage county, and maybe just maybe, catch a fish or two. ATV World has really been focusing on ride destinations in Ontario due to the fact that Ontario is truly a great place to ride, relax and meet good people. When George Offshack, proprietor and Inn keeper of Limerick Lake Lodge called and asked if we would like to come up to visit, spend a few days riding on the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance, (EOTA) the question was not even finished when we relied “Yup”. We had just finished putting the snowmobiles away for the winter, cleaned up the STV studio, and now we were ready to ride ATVs. It was perfect timing.

GREAT SIGNAGE ALONG THE TRAILS IN THE REGION.
imerick Lake Lodge, located on the south end of Limerick Lake, is open from Ice Out to Ice In, and during the early spring months, it’s set up perfectly for a week or weekend away to ride the ATVs and UTVs. The lodge is located less than 2kms away from the Heritage Trail, and literally crosses the dirt road into the lodge. From the trail head, you have access to over 500kms of maintained trails from the EOTA. With 30 pillows available, you can choose to be in the main lodge, and utilize a meal plan that George can prepare for you, or if you are more selfsufficient, you can book one of the
stand–alone cabins that have full amenities. Bring your own food and cook on supplied BBQ’s and kitchens. For us at ATV World, we opted for the main cabin, and meal plan. There is no “formal” restaurant in the lodge, so if you are planning to use the meal plan, just let them know when you book your stay. Adult beverages are also on your own, however BYOB is very friendly at the lodge, and there are fridges you can use to keep them cold. The main lodge offers a large rec room with pool tables, TV’s, games and stereos, as well as a Den that has large screen TV’s and an amazing view of the lake. The Limerick Lake Lodge immediately feels like you are home when you arrive. When you arrive, the Lodge has ample secured parking for your truck and trailer, so we offloaded all our buggies the

night we arrived, so they would be ready in the morning. Getting to Limerick Lake Lodge is really easy, and is directly off Hwy 60 out of Bancroft. From the southern part of Ontario, you are looking only at about 2.5 hours from the GTA, and if you are coming from the East, it is only around 2 hours from the Ottawa region. This ride had us fly up Nick Nelson, our California editor, and his way better half, Paulina, so even from the Toronto International Airport, you are only just 3.5 hours to the lodge. While we waited for the rest of the crew to arrive at the lodge, George asked us if we wanted to head out on the lake for some sunset fishing. That was a nobrainer and thanks to Vince in our crew, who had the foresight to pack some fishing gear, we loaded up in the pontoon boat and got a first-hand guided fishing tour from George. Let us tell you this; there are fish is Limerick Lake. No joke, we when we floated up on Georges “honey spot”, the first two casts out of the boat landed a small and a large bass, back-to-back. George even had to comment that he has
never seen that happen in the entire history of him fishing on this lake. It just goes to show you that even us ATV guys know how to fish (if you have the right guide). Once the crew had arrived, we settled in for some evening festivities; we played some pool, told some lies, and headed to bed to start the ATV adventure the next day on the EOTA trails. After a great sleep with the country air, the crew was up and enjoying a home cooked breakfast, so we could fuel ourselves up before heading out on the ride. We had a few loose plans that we wanted to cover, but the best part of riding out of the Limerick Lake Lodge is the fact there is no pressure to confirm a destination. You can take your time, enjoy a home cooked breakfast, and set a pace that you are comfortable with and be on your way. We knew on Day One that we wanted to get to Bancroft for sure, and see what the trails had to offer. The ride to Bancroft is a great run up the trail and is easy to find. The town of Bancroft welcomes ATVs and UTVs into the city limits, so you are good

to explore and check out what there is to offer. After touring around the area, we came across the Bancroft Brew Pub and Restaurant and decided the best thing to do was get some gas in town, head back to the lodge, grab the trucks and our designated driver, and head back to town for dinner. This is what’s so good about being stationed at the Limerick Lake Lodge; everything is local and easy to get to. Dinner was at the pub, and we headed to the brewer to get some more beverages for later in the night. The second day had us up at a decent time. Truth be told, some members got up at the crack of dawn, and were able to get an early morning fish on Limerick Lake before we headed out on the trails. That is best part of being centrally located at the lodge is that you can do several different activities like fish, hike, ATV or chill, all in one day. It’s whatever you want to do. With no set plan in the making for the trail ride, we simply decided to go the opposite way we went the day before, and explore what the trails had to offer. We headed east out of the trail that cuts out of the lodge, and were able to find some really cool trails through

to Gilmour, and ended up in Cloyne. The EOTA trails along this portion are very well marked and easy to navigate, so if you are looking to put some kms on your machine without getting into any trouble, then these are your trails. If you are looking for more technical and advanced riding, that’s also available as there are several offshoot trails that you can explore, and then the main trail will take you back. After a great day out on the trails, we were invited to be guests in Coe Hill for dinner at the Hideaway Grill. Located directly on the trail, the ride to dinner from Limerick Lake Lodge to the restaurant is very easy, so an early dinner gets you back with lots of sunlight left in the day. The Hideaway Grill needs to be on your bucket list if you are riding in this region. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is relaxed casual, so showing up in your riding gear and getting a seat on patio is not a problem. The trail literally dumps into the Hideaway’s parking lot. After spending a few days in Ontario’s premier cottage country at the Limerick Lake Lodge, you really get the sense that you are welcome where ever you go.
