IT’S ALL MELTING. I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS!
W
ell it’s blue sky and sunny, spring is on her way. It’s sad to some of us that live for the snow to fall. But what a great season we at OSM had. I can smell the change in the air. Huts are off the lakes, and local stores have lawn furniture and gazebos up for sale. It was an awesome Season, we were on the gas all winter. We rode all over North America. We collected miles in New Brunswick, Montana, and Matt and I even tested the trails in Sweden. What a season! My son amazed me this year. He went from his first try on his 120 alone, to breaking the throttle on a 200. I was so proud of him. Watching him learn, push aside any fears, and really love the sport I grew up with. Everyday after school he’d be geared up and asking if we can go snowmobiling. He

blew us away with his depth of understanding, cautiousness and listening skills. We’re still working on sharing with his older sister. Anyway, as I watch him learning and growing as a tiny rider, I see him really growing up. Besides needing a new suit, new helmet, new boots, and gloves for next year… we’re hanging up the 120. “Tuck it away for the grandkids” my wife says. Of course I’ll find a spot! I hope you enjoyed reading OSM this season and we look forward to bringing you more of the World’s Largest Snowmobile Magazine for the 2020 season! Thank-you to all that contacted us and submitted photos to our contests throughout the year. Tuck away the sleds and enjoy the warmer weather.

CAT SETS DEADLINE OF APRIL 15 Take advantage of huge savings when you purchase your 2020 Arctic Cat snowmobile/ However, you have to make up your mind by the April 15, 2019 deadline. Textron has set some very aggressive pricing in hopes of capturing all of their customers by the deadline. Simply put, if you don’t put your greenbacks down soon you might not be riding the 2020 Cat of choice.
USXC02 BULLSEYE ON HERFINDAHL There is still plenty of racing left on the USXC schedule with the added Andes Tower Hills in Alexandria, MN. And it looks like it’s going down to the wire. The #312 Arctic Cat of Zach Herfindahl has been on fire again this season leading Justin Tate in the Pro Open class by a mere 25 points. In the Factory Pro 6 class. Herfindahl is leading Aaron Christensen by 51 points. Can the #312 sweep the USXC Championships this year? Wait and see!
03 2 HORSE RACE IN CSRA PRO OPEN & LITE
CSRA Pro Open class is separated by 27 points between Country Corners Arctic Cat Jake Weir, and last years champ Dave Joanis. Pro Lite is a battle between two other Country Corners Arctic Cats, with point leader Taylar Lightfoot leading Cameron Wachtler by 26 points. With three more stops on the tour there’s a lot that can happen before the last pro races before March 31. Pro/ Am Women is also a tight one with Laurianne Goyette leading Nikella Callan by 36 points. The other Pro classes can crown their champs with Pro/am Vet Stephen Gelinas almost doubling second place and Pro 450 Snow Bike sees Yannick Boucher leading Taylor Ciampichini by 83 points.

06 KAMM GETS $10,000 PAYDAY @ ERX
Hentges Racing/Monster Energy/Polaris rider, Kody Kamm nailed his second consecutive win at the ERX Eliminator. The two lap head to head is an exciting fast pace race for both racers and fans. After 30 rounds of races the ERX Eliminator was down to a winner take all scenario. The final saw Kamm Vs AMSOIL/Klim/Ski-Doo Pro Lite racer Hunter Patenaude. Kamm ma made it through the first turn and didn’t look back securing his second consecutive ERX Eliminator victory. Plateaued was the only Ski-Doo driver entered in the Eliminator after he scored $1,000 heat race bonus, $1,500 for being the top Pro Lite driver and $2,500 for second place.

VP Fuels acquired a new property in Huntingdon, TN as it was chosen as a favourable location for the company’s business growth. VP Fuels said the local, state and economic development agencies in Tennessee were eager to help them obtain everything needed for the acquisition, including permits and approvals of the facility. Nothing says it’s the end of the season more than a massive, clear builder’s tarp, lazily tossed over your buggy to keep the elements off it. You just know that the proud owner of this plastic mound would have properly fogged the engine and greased the suspension, prior to “bagging it” for the off season.
Just when you thought winter was over and you could bust out the Turtle Wax and properly buff the hood, Mother Nature strikes again; proving that, much like your wife, she’s in charge, even when you think you are.
With gas prices through the roof in Canada, these two honeys were parked in protest by snowmobilers unwilling to pay over $1.55 per liter. Putting it in perspective for those purchasing in gallons, there is 3.785 liters in every gallon. Better yet, it’s a shocking $5.87 per gallon.

At the end of the season, Billy tossed a cover over the ole’ Indy Classic for the season, and put it on a track stand to let the suspension hang. We can’t see any problem with this summer storage technique.
Back in the fall, we found this V-max neglected under a tree. The owner graciously wrapped a rope over it so the tarp isn’t going to blow away. It’s a shame since this particular vehicle was well known to have patrolled none other than Kevlar Lake.
We tried not stare at this hot mess too long, so we took a picture of it. Clearly the owner is here to party as all seasons were present in the photo with the sled, Iroc and boat.

Going lean is all the rage, and I guess the folks at Textron (Arctic Cat’s parent company) are jumping on board.
We are not knocking it one bit. Many dealers and consumers alike have asked for less weight for years, but recently they’re also asking to curb the confusion and seemingly duplicate models. Cat has cleaned up their plate of sled offerings, while expanding the use of new technology, like their single beam, mountain killing Alpha One rear suspension. They’ve also got Cat loyalists going wild, maybe stopping short of inciting couch-burning, but giving reasons to be excited about the newest sled, the Riot.

WARNING, EXCESSIVE CROSSOVER FUN MAY ENSUE! The Riot is just that, a new crossover sled with lots of attitude, and other than some close contenders, it is the most fun, new sled in the Arctic Cat lineup. Available in both 600cc and 800cc options, (6000 and 8000 CTEC 2 motors, and standard charcoal or upgraded chartreuse colors) the Riot replaces quite a few sleds in the Cat lineup. Gone are the High-country and Cross-country machines of the last few years in Cat’s crossovers. This is really where the Riot fits, in the 40-60 to 60-40 on/off-trail segment of the market. The optional 15x146x1.35 Cobra track on the standard Riot keeps this sled more trail centered, but the 15x146x1.6 gives it a little more off-trail capability. The standard Riot 6000 and 8000 slice out a segment of the market that ride mostly trail, but aspire to be off-trail riders.

It’s got oodles of stellar standard positives, like the new 146-inch Cross-Action rear suspension (on all Riot models). This uncoupled suspension works like you would think, with more transfer on acceleration, and there’s a Fox 2.0 ZERO QS3 shock in the rear on the more wild hi-vis colorway, which makes it even better. The ARS II front suspension has brand new forged aluminum spindles for 2020 on the Riot, and there is an added 1.5 inches of clearance, new upper arms, new feel, and a standard sway bar which means flat cornering in the trails. The standard Riot has the trail-oriented, adjustable ski stance from 42-43 inches, and there’s reinforced running boards for taking this thing off big jumps and handling hard moguls. There’s also a rear rack standard.
Replacing more of the High-Country market segment from years past in the Cat lineup is the Riot X 8000. A notable difference right away is the lack of a windshield. This makes is easier to roll-over when stuck on a big side-hill, but also decreases protection from the elements. New A-arms made out of super fancy ‘dual-phase-alloysteel’ don the front end. Most mountain guys will just care that these parts are lighter than previous ones. The X model has the Arctic Mountain Suspension (AMS) with a 27-degree spindle caster angle for better predictability in side-hilling scenarios. There’s also the G2 ProClimb 7 mountain ski that was developed along with the Alpha One mountain sled for offtrail performance. The Riot gets a Challenger track with a 2.0-inch lug on it as well for deeper snow capability.

ALPHA THRE?
THERE WAS A LOT OF ATTRITION ACROSS THE LINE AT CAT THIS YEAR, AND THE MOUNTAIN SEGMENT WAS NOT SPARED. THERE IS NO MORE KING CAT, NO MORE 4-STROKES IN THE MOUNTAIN
No, there is not a previously unreleased Alpha 3 model… sorry for the buzzkill, but there are 3 models of mountain machines from Cat for 2020, all with the Alpha One single beam rear suspension. Like other areas of Cat’s lineup, there are changes and slimming in the mountain segment. Again, this is a good thing here. You get the 8000 Ctec2 powered Alpha One, the Mountain Cat Alpha One, and the standard Alpha One this year. What sets the Hardcore apart from the others as the top mountain sled from Cat is the cost… kidding, kind of. Actually, this was a sled that many seasoned mountain riders asked for last year. In the Ascender platform, (Cat’s newest mountain chassis) this sled has the upgraded Fox 1.5 Zero QS3 coil-over shocks, except for the rear
shock, which is the QSL lock-out shock. Easily adjustable, and a wide range of capability, these shocks are the main reason the Hardcore is the top sled in the lineup. Plus, it has the reinforced running boards and plenty other options. There’s a narrower 42.5-44.5-inch adjust stance up front as well. The Mountain Cat does not get the extra reinforcements, but comes with very capable Fox Float QS3 shocks. While the standard Alpha-One comes with the Cat IFP gas shocks. There was a lot of attrition across the line at Cat this year, and the mountain segment was not spared. There is no more King Cat, no more 4-strokes in the mountain. Plus, there is not a Mountain Cat Sno Pro, or any 600cc option for the mountains.
ZR STILL THE BREAD AND BUTTER
HOW MUCH ON TRAIL VS. OFF TRAIL IS THE DECIXQDING FACTXQOR BETWEEN THE RIOT AND RIOT X.
Even with all the changes to the line for 2020, the ZR trail sleds are still the bread and butter of the Arctic Cat offerings for 2020. With five models to choose from, there is something like 75% fewer sled options in this segment when comparing to last year. All are in the 137-inch length, which is probably the best all around length for most riders. We debate the 129-inch length versus the 137-inch length all the time, but since my personal sleds are 137-inchers, I am slightly partial. The 5 sleds left in the lineup are the Thundercat, newly available ZR R XC, ZR RR, ZR Limited, and ZR Sno Pro. There are few differences between these sleds, other than shock packages and the use of the new-last-year iAct suspension system. That system received an upgrade this year, as you can now go in through the gauge and save different rider profiles that you can pre-set the shock settings for. If for instance, you wanted the front ski shocks on medium, but the rear shock on hard, you could set that and save it as a profile. You cannot change the shocks
separately on the fly yet, (we are guessing that might be a legal hurdle) and there is no center shock adjustment yet. The Thundercat is for the most part unchanged from last year, other than the Iast updates. The ZR R XC with the 6000 Ctec2 motor is an interesting cross-country racer option this year as a spring buy model. It comes with top of the line Fox Zero Kashima coated, front ski-shock, and a shock with a 2.0 diameter shock body diameter in the rear. Plus, there is a race-developed seat for ease of movement and cornering maneuverability, and race options like reinforced running boards. The ZR RR 8000 is my personal favorite trail sled from Cat this year. With Kashima coated Fox Zero shocks over the skis and in the rear of the skid, this 137-inch sled is really working well for Cat in 2020. The ZR Limited has the Fox Zero QS3 shocks and the Sno Pro has Cat IFP gas shocks. One thing to note, you can get the Sno Pro with the 6000 motor for under $10,000 US, which we think is a great option for all kinds of riders. The Lynx entry level trail sled is also still available with the 565cc 2-stroke fan motor.

UTILITY AND YOUTH Thankfully, the youth market is alive and well at Arctic Cat, and we applaud them (and Yamaha) for having the sleds they do for the next generation. The ZR 120 and 200 are available for 2020. The Utility mar-
ket has been paired down to the Bearcat and Lynx LT. The Bearcat 2000 XT with the 565cc fan and the Lynx 2000 LT are the only sleds now available in the utility and touring markets respectively.
HOW TO ORDER YOUR CAT Arctic is doing something different this year with their ordering. If you want a new 2020 Cat you must order it by April 15th, through their ‘Snowmageddon’ program. There will supposedly be no in-season floor models. However, we all know that dealers will most likely ‘order 5 or so for their cousins’. Plus, the prices on new Cat sleds during Snowmageddon are pretty darn attractive. A new Thundercat for under $13,995 versus almost $17,000 US? That sounds almost affordable! That being said, this is a bold tactic by Cat, and a pointed attempt to clean out the inventory pipeline. They may have had a crystal ball because this winter, that is just now ending, saw record snows across pretty much the entire Snowbelt, from Den-

ver to Detroit, and BC to QC. That means a lot of people had good snow to ride a lot on their sleds, break their sleds, and see other people on newer sleds. All of this is great if you are a manufacturer. Especially if you are a manufacturer that’s cleaning out a pipeline of last year’s models that are still unsold. Positives for the OEMs trickle down to the used market too. At the end of the day, we think Cat (and Yamaha) might have the Nostradamus of weather on staff somewhere, or their marketing/sales persons should probably go out and buy a lottery ticket… like yesterday. Time will tell how the public and dealers react, and whether this helps or hurts Cat. Either way, we are still loving lots of new ideas from AC.

and it’s welcomed! Polaris has continued its upward trend for another year with hot sleds in all categories, and they are offering new options each year… not just BNG (Bold New Graphics). But like all the other OEMs, there has been consolidation of total offerings in their lineup. Polaris has kept the best and right ones though!

or the second straight year, Polaris is making all 850 Liberty Patriot powered sleds Snowcheckonly for hungry spring buyers. The same 4-year warranty that was introduced last year applies again for 2020, and that is good news not only for big mileage trail riders, but hard pushing off-trail riders too, who spend lots of time chugging through big snow at WOT (wide open throttle). There is more big news in the trail though for Indy lovers, as Indy now covers an even larger portion of the market. It’s the 40th Anniversary of the original Indy, which was the pillar of the Independent Front Suspension evolution in snowmobiling… and yes, we will continue to use the evolution theme throughout this narrative. The new Indy Adventure 137 40th Anniversary Edition and the Indy XC 137 bridge the gap between the on-trail Pro-S sleds, the Switchback Assault off-

trail crossover sleds, and the Switchback XCR big-bump and off-trail crossover machines. We rode the 137-inch Indy sleds a lot, and all these are going to make a huge dent in the market share of other OEMs in this market segment. They just work like advertised. That being said, we scratched our heads at a 40th Anniversary Edition sled that did not come standard with electric start. The Indy 137-inch trail sleds have, or can have with accessories, what almost all riders crave. From awesome add-ons like a heated passenger seat, extra storage bags, and ice-ripper 1.25 lug optional track, to the new standard ES model battery charging port (on the right-side tunnel). Plus, the Pro-CC 137 rear skid with Walker Evans Velocity needle compression adjustable rear shock, and more durable bogie wheels, makes for a trail-reliable, and bump taming experience. As an example of options that other
OEM’s may not be doing, but one that makes sense, Polaris is offering options of 600, 800, and 850 motors (Snowcheck). The Roseau, MN based manufacturer is also giving track options for Snowcheck again this year. 129 and 137-inch Indy XC buyers can get the Storm 1.5-inch lug for aggressive riders, and a little more off-trail capability (this rider’s personal favorite with a 2-stud per lug pattern). But buyers can also choose the Cobra 1.25 standard trail track, or the Ice Ripper XT 1.25 lug (available on 120-inch sleds too). Then there’s slightly more value options in the Indy line, like the Indy SP 600, which is a powerful little trail ripper in its own right, and available in 129 and 137-inch versions. There are not too many sleds in the last 10 years that compare with the tossability of a 129-inch Indy 600. In and out of the corners, this is a dream, and up to 85mph it will stick with any 800cc sled, trust us.

The crown jewel for Polaris in the trails is the Indy XCR. The sled has been proven on cross-country courses and throughout North America. We have too many quotes from test riders to print in this quick overview, but the 129 (actually 128-inch) sled has more options than we can mention… and the Indy Switchback 137 we think is even better! Three engine options from 600, 800 and 850cc, Three track options (Snowcheck) that include a 1.25 Ice Ripper, 1.35 Cobra, and 1.75 Backcountry, allow you to make this sled what you want it to be. That’s a recurring theme across the Polaris sled lineup, you can basically make what you want. The Rush Pro-S also returns in the 600, 800 and 850 models. This is one of the very few 120-inch sleds you can buy new anymore, and the only model you can get in this short trail length, in several engine options. If you are looking for a new sled that will rip the tight trails, carry a top of the line shock package in the Walker Evans adjustable package, and have proven reliability, then look no further. Don’t forget about the Indy Evo that was introduced last year, or the EVOlution kit that pushes this sled past the governed 50mph of the standard EVO. Plus, for 2020 there’s the all new RMK EVO 144 with a 1.75 Backcountry track. Check out STV (Snowmobiler TV) for proof as to how this sled carves through the powder. At 420 pounds dry weight, this sled is light, and has a large footprint, tall lugs, shallow angle of attack from the track to the rails, and stays up on top of the snow… but billing this as an RMK is still kind of a stretch IMO, which is why we mentioned it in this section. Rocky Mountain King just doesn’t equate to a 550-fan sled. Nomenclature and semi-personal bias aside, we very much appreciate the underlying initiative by Polaris with this sled. There is a 12-year-old who will be crying tears of joy somewhere in Montana this year when this sled rolls in at Christmas. There’s much more we will talk about the Indy suspension, semi/trail-crossover expansion, and mainstream market segment machismo in later issues, but from our own test rider experiences, these aforementioned sleds are where we see Polaris really powering forward.
THE EVO RMK HITS THE BULLSEYE FOR THE YOUNGER RIDER.
IN-BETWEEN IS RIGHT WHERE YOU NEED TO BE Polaris, like everyone else for the last ten years, has had more focus on the crossover market, but Polaris has (again) evolved and found their happy place very well. The Assault and Switchback models are some of the best performing sleds in altering snow conditions on the market. Three sleds in particular that out-punch their projections are the Switchback XCR 137, the Switchback Assault 144 and SKS 146. The Switch XCR comes in the 6, 8, or 850cc options and this sled is an under-reported super-sled off-trail. I pity the fool who thinks his buddy is going to get stuck when they stop, and he parks behind this sled. I’ve watched this
sled rally out of more snow than you would ever think a 137 with a 1.35-inch lug track would go through. Disclaimer: the roost from this sled is like standing behind a jetboat on launch. But you’ve got 1.25, 1.35, and 1.75 snowcheck track lug options for this sled, so there is versatility, and even more roosting capability here that’s not offered in some competing sleds. Like we said, don’t be scared that the 1.35 lug is not enough, the throttle is your friend! Hayes race brakes and Walker Evans hi-low compression adjustable, coil-over shocks (that can be easily clicker-adjusted) give stop-on-a-dime performance and a super plush ride. You can make changes to handle

60-foot triple jumps, or make this sled a touring overachiever. The Assault Switchback 144 has been this guy’s personal favorite boondocking sled for lots of years. Available again in 6, 8, and 850cc versions, this is the fastest and lightest Axys chassis crossover sled, with less rolling resistance in the IGX skid than any other machine in the Polaris lineup. The track speed, plus the perfect balance for tight tree slaloming, and all the goodies that Polaris gives standard, make this sled an incredible buy. You get
LED headlights, Powdertrac hybrid running boards, and more… this sled seriously has it all. You can rip the rivers, lakes, and trails with Walker Evans Piggyback Needle shocks sucking up any aberrations, then hop off-trail and go 90% of the places that an RMK can go. Track options include a 1.35 or 1.6 lug Cobra track, or a 2.0 Series 4 deep snow focused track. The only downfall of this sled is that you can’t adjust the ski-stance. HOWEVER, you can adjust the ski stance on the SKS 146! From 39-41 inches,

this is the next step up for the off-trail focused boondocker that’s not ready, or needing to take the step into an RMK. But this is only available in the 8, and 850cc Liberty motors. This sled is a mini-RMK, but actually works better in places like Northern Ontario; Quebec; the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; upstate New York and Maine; Northern Minnesota, and plenty of other places across the plains and lower elevations. There’s an SKS 155 too, but we’re still more in love with the 146.

RELAX, KHAOS IS THE NEW STANDARD The biggest news from Polaris for 2020 is the intro of the new Khaos all-mountain RMK sled. Walker Evans Velocity hi-low speed compression adjustable shocks, and a new Khaos rear suspension are the main factors that set this sled apart from Polaris mountain sleds that have come before it. Available in the 800 or 850cc motors, the 36-38-inch adjustable Pro-RMK React front suspension, in combo with the new rear skid are working better on this model on side-hills, big hits, re-entries, and technical terrain than any other non-modified RMK we have ridden. The Powdertrac
XT boards evac snow promptly, and make technical moves easier. Plus, you get a 2.6 Series 6 or 3.0 Series 7 snowcheck track option. The engineering goal with the geometry of the new rear skid, boards, track, front end and rider positioning was to make the sled more playful, and for it to take less effort to ‘flick around’. Better transfer with the skid, lighter steering effort on sidehill, better predictability through varying conditions and opportunities, all make this sled the next generation of bad-boy RMK.

UTILITY AND TOURING Polaris has it all covered with every market segment squared away. In the Extreme Utility segment, the Titan is still a massive force. The Titan SP, XC, and the Adventure extreme touring sled are all workhorses utilizing the Liberty 800cc motor. The touring and sport utility markets are handled by the Indy LXT, Voyager 144/156 and Indy Adventure 144/156.

There were plenty of refinements made to this motor pre-emptively by Polaris. Again, this motor has a 4-year warranty, so owners shouldn’t be in much trouble here, other than possibly parts availability… which has been good. There is a new PTO bearing and retainer ring, a new water temp sensor, a new screened internal check valve, new oil feed for the center main bearings, and stated improved piston life. Furthermore, there is better sealing in the crankcase, new larger mag engine mounts, and new software/calibration.

oasting a completely redesigned rear skid, they have eliminated one of the rear suspension arms, making the chassis more compact, and thus were able to move it 16-inches closer to rider-centric. With the shorter pivot point, the weight transfer and maneuverability in tight terrain increased dramatically. If that wasn’t enough, all this comes with weight savings of eleven pounds over the ARO 120-inch kit. The Riot comes in two versions, both with a 11.5 x 120 x 2.5-inch track. The in-season standard version comes only in black, outfitted with the Timbersled IFP shock package. On the spring order Riot LE model, you get upgraded Fox Zero QS3 shocks, along with matching rails, spindle, and ski loops, in a choice of five different colors. We got a chance to ride a couple of Honda CFR450’s this spring, one fitted
with the new Riot chassis and the other, its big brother, the Aro. With both machines sporting a 120-inch length track, the bikes seemed identical, and most would assume a pretty even matchup. But that was absolutely not the case! Immediately upon twisting the throttle, you can feel the difference as the Riot front end hovers above the snow effortlessly, and carves side to side with ease. For those avid dirt bike riders that are new to the snow bike scene, this chassis will be immensely more familiar to the characteristics of their bike in the warmer months. You can actually begin to pick the front end up when dumping the clutch and grabbing a handful of throttle. We did not complain about that! We will definitely be investing some more seat time on the Riot, check back with us for an in-depth report soon.

he three new machines in the GT line are easily identified by the Velocity Red livery, and include a Sidewinder L-TX GT, a first ever 2UP Sidewinder S-TX GT, and an L-TX GT SRViper that can now be found in the Gen2 bodywork. In addition to the premium red paintwork, GT series sleds gets the rider a taller windshield, increased storage capacity, upgraded suspensions, and in-season availability. Refinements have also been made to the in-season SE line up as well. Starting with the front suspension, the SE line receives the new ARCS front suspension geometry, just like the GT and LE lines, except B-TX LE. This new spindle moves the lower control arm up about an inch and a half by raising the outer ball joint mounting point. This improves the geometry of

the front end roll centre, which increases grip, while keeping the inside ski planted. The SE line also stands out with some impressive high impact graphics. The LE line has always offered the best Yamaha has to offer, and these models are only available during the Spring Power Surge. Led by the SRX LE, it’s back for 2020, but only in Midnight Black with Liquid Silver graphics. Other sleds in the LE class can be identified by their new Jet Stream Blue colour package and premium features like FOX iQS suspensions. Yamaha’s crossover machines see a new rear suspension called the VersAttak. An uncoupled skid, this new suspension incorporates mountain style front arm, 146” rails, and a longer rear QS3 shock. This new skid can devour whooped out trails, and provide the transfer needed to lift the

skis in the boondocks, making the new X-TX the best Yamaha crossover ever. Other notable improvements for 2020 include tether cords and push-button starting on almost all models except for the SRViper. In addition, models such as the RS Venture TF And VK PRO II are back in the lineup, as well as the VK540, but remain largely unchanged from previous years. Completely new for 2020 is the Transporter 600. A 2-Stroke (yes you read that right) utility sled, like the Polaris Titan and Skidoo Expedition, this new Transporter blurs the lines between pure recreation and work oriented snowmobiles. Being only a 600 class engine, the other sleds in this emerging market segment are slightly livelier to ride, but the 600 twin can hold its own. Out back, the Transporter is shoed with a 15x153x2.25 Camso Power Claw track, wrapped around a long travel rear suspension. The skid rails are also articulated at the rear to shorten the feel of the sled on hard pack trails, and to help the rear climb the snowpack while reversing. The hinged section is also lockable with a simple pin design, for when maximum traction is needed.

Ski-Doo is still the #1 sled-maker in the world, and for 2020, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) has injected their state-of-the-art 850cc DI 2-stroke E-Tec motor into even more market segments. The Gen 4 chassis is hitting its peak this year as well. Plus, the Summit mountain line gets some attention, and there’s always action going on in the heavily populated Ski-Doo crossover market.

UTILITY CAN BE COOL ften times in the past, the utility sled owners spoke quietly when asked by the loud-mouth speed demons what kind of sled they had. For many years, it was almost like the utility folks were the shy kids in the corner that did not really show off all the incredible talents they had. Well those days are gone! Ski-Doo (and Polaris in particular as well) have shown that utility sleds can be cool, and also extremely useful. Ski-Doo even has a new utility sled, professional ambassador on staff now! Four years ago, the Gen4 chassis and 850 motor came out, then in 2019 the wide body design for the 4-stroke turbo sleds were introduced. Now the Gen 4 chassis is available in the 20-inch wide-track utility segment of Ski-Doo’s lineup.The XU was a great workhorse chassis for a long time for

Ski-Doo, but the new Gen 4 utility machine is 1¾ inches narrower, and certain models dropped up to 30 pounds. That’s great news for guys and gals who are trooping in and out of the back country pulling sleighs, toting fishing gear, or riding 2-up. These sleds stay on the top of the snow. The Expedition is the 2-up and utility flagship sled, and it comes in the SE, LE, and Xtreme packages. The Xtreme gets the 850 Etec motor, and the other two models have a choice of 900 ACE Turbo, 900 ACE naturally aspirated, and 600 Etec motors. This Expedition sled is warmer with a taller windshield option, and has new Pilot 7.4 utility skis with a deeper keel that are more aggressive and wider. The SE is a spring-only model and has all kinds of freaking awesome features including push-button RER reverse, big 7-inch digital display, adjustable riser, new
multi-LinQ plate on the tunnel for accessories, huge cargo box and 3 track options. Tracks include the Silent Cobra 1.5, the Silent Ice Cobra 1.5, and the Cobra 1.8… all these are in the 20-inch width. These new Silent tracks are even more quiet (1.5x’s) than they were on the XU chassis as well. The multi-LinQ is a utility and touring person’s dream, with 125 pounds of cargo capacity, and 67% more capacity than the XU chassis. The rear end can handle 40% more cargo weight than the nearest competitor, or so Ski-Doo claims. There’s an accessory bumper too that takes the towing capacity up to more than some small pickup trucks (1500 lbs). Plus, the accessories like a gun holder, ice auger holder, chain saw holder, axe holder and more make this the most versatile sled in the industry.

There is an easier shift transmission, that’s much better than clunky systems you’ve seen in the past on utility sleds. Plus, push button reverse on the start button, like all other BRP sleds, so that action is easy and smooth. Honestly, that is a huge issue that I have using utility sleds, and BRP addressed it… kudos to the product manager and engineers over in Quebec! Plus, the seats are re-designed, more comfortable, and have more storage on the Expedition. Check out all kinds of new LED accessory lights for these sleds too, which are changing the game for extending your day and riding time. Give me an accessorized Expedition Extreme for our family time up in Northern Ontario and the trails, lakes, fish, and sliding hills will never know what hit them! The Expedition SWT, Sport, Skandic SWT and WT, and Tundra Xtreme, LT and Sport return as well to round out the Ski-Doo Utility market with little changes. The Grand Touring in the limited and Sport versions also return with the 600 ACE Sport being BAT certified for use in parks like West Yellowstone.

EXPERT SUMMIT X The second biggest news, IMO, from Ski-Doo is the spring-buy Summit X with Expert package (Summit X also is spring buy only). With Kashima coated HPG Plus ski shocks, and a KYB Pro piggyback in the back of the skid, this sled is snocross or cornicedrop ready. The springs on the coil-over shocks are new, lightweight versions and the shock/spring package is actually a stiffer calibration. Of all the OEMs, Ski-Doo seemingly pays the most attention to cutting weight, and keeping a balance by not sacrificing performance. This is a package basically built by big name Ski-Doo ambassadors like Carl
Kuster, Bret Rasmussen, Tony Jenkins, and Jeremy Mercier. Upgrades include a lower handlebar strap, lower bar riser with tapered bars, new lower seat, limiter strap adjuster on the side of the tunnel, new lightweight ski-spindle and stopper, and more. The tunnel on the 154 is more like a 146 length, which is great for technical maneuvers in tight trees, or to be able to throw around quickly. The 165 length is also fantastic, but both come with a lightweight ‘fender’ with a miniscule snow flap. Nobody who values their goggles or helmet will want to follow this 3-inch lugged monster down the trail for

more than 5 seconds, because it basically throws mini-snow boulders to the sky. Not having a snow flap is all the rage in the mountains and among millennial riders across North America. We see the advantages when riding in 5-feet of powder, but honestly, 90% of the people who buy this sled could get along just fine with a standard flap… and everyone else in your group would be much happier to ride with you. The Summit in-season models include the SP (850 and 600 Etec) and Sport (with only a 600 carb motor option). There are also some new Summit accessories including a new extreme skid plate and small 1-gallon fuel caddy, which is great if you have snow-bikes in your group.

It’s just tough to beat the lineup that Ski-Doo has built over the years. The Renegade and MXZ Gen 4 packages return for 2020 with little changes. For Spring buying MXZ and Renegade X or XRS customers, there are track options including the Ripsaw 1.25, Ice Ripper 1.25 and the Ice Ripper 1.5. The Blizzard is gone from the line-up, but honestly won’t be missed that much. Of any of the manufacturers, Ski-Doo has had very close, almost duplicate models for many years. You’ve heard the talk of simplifying across the industry, and this is really the only large simplifying move for Ski-Doo. The MXZ TNT gets the handguards, different shield, better graphic options, and Ice Ripper track option for 2020. So, like we said, the Blizzard most likely won’t be missed. The Renegade in-season models will still include the Enduro, Adrenaline and Sport models. The only change being a heated visor plug on the Enduro. But for 2020, there are more options for the MXZ and Renegade including Fox shock options in the accessory catalogue, two separate adjustable windshield accessories, and lots more. It is almost as much fun as sitting down with your copy of OSM as it is to sit down with your Ski-Doo parts, garments and accessories catalogue… but not quite. The last big news from Ski-Doo is the new Backcountry 154-inch sled. We can’t
say enough good things about the Backcountry, and in a 16 x 154-inch 2.0 lug or 2.5 lug option, this XRS is a ton of fun. We do think there is some duplication here with a lot of the same attributes that make the Backcountry great, also making the Freeride great. We will go into all the finite details in later articles, but the main differences are having a narrower ski-stance with quick-disconnect option. The 146inch 850 Backcountry returns in the X or standard model, (with 600cc Etec option) and these sleds can follow most full-on mountain sleds wherever they want… and still be ultra-comfy in the trails. The Freeride 154 38-inch sled is gone for 2020, seemingly replaced by the Backcountry XRS with its upgraded shock package. But this sled has a ton of capability on-trail and off, in any of the 137, 146, 154, or 165-inch lengths. They all only come in the 850 package and a new vibrant blue colorway. The 154-165 come with full length profiled boards, and new lightweight Summit-style ski-spindle and ski-stopper we mentioned earlier. These boards have wider openings for your boots, more grip and save a little weight as well. Needless to say, Ski-Doo is projected to keep its hold on the top spot in the snow industry for 2020, but they can’t sit still, nor will they.

President’s Report…
Congratulations, Welcome to the new Government of New Brunswick
The NBFSC wishes to congratulate our new Premier, the Hon. Blaine Higgs and his Cabinet in forming New Brunswick’s newest Government this past autumn. Premier Higgs is no stranger to the NBFSC and to many snowmobilers throughout the Province. He is an avid enthusiast, regular rider and worked with us often as Finance Minister. Congratulations Congratulations also to the Hon. Robert Gauvin, Minister for Tourism, Heritage and Culture. The NBFSC’s relationship with tourism, being New Brunswick’s leading winter tourism sector is well documented. We are excited to work with Minister Gauvin and to ensure that he can also join us on the annual provincial Go Snowmobiling Ride this winter. We trust that the tourism department’s Tourism Growth Strategy (TGS) will continue to evolve and we have communicated with Premier Higgs and Minister Gauvin that we believe investments into tourism are strategically smart if based on proven Returns on Investments. We have also given our overall support to the TGS and asked that there be a focus beyond the traditional summer activities in New Brunswick.
We have also stated our interest in the government’s Trails Action Plan (TAP). This is a critical document being implemented to the success of all trail types. When released however, snowmobiling was only ‘awarded’ a single Signature Trail amongst 11 choices selected provincially. We do not agree that our return on investments were stated accurately; a reason given for the previous government’s choices. Our new independent Snowmobile Economic Impact Study being performed in 2019 we believe will conclude that snowmobile trails should have played a larger role in the TAP and that the published Returns on Investments for snowmobile infrastructure may be higher than any other trail activity in New Brunswick. We know our new Government will listen to this rationale. We look forward to hosting Premier Higgs, Minister Gauvin and other members of the Premier’s team at our annual “Go Snowmobiling Ride”. Félicitations et bienvenue au nouveau gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick La FCMNB souhaite féliciter notre nouveau Premier Ministre, l’Hon. Blaine Higgs, et son Cabinet dans la formation du plus récent gouvernement au NouveauBrunswick l’automne dernier. Le Premier Ministre Higgs n’est pas étranger à la FCMNB et aux nombreux motoneigistes à travers la province. Il est passionné, un motoneigiste régulier et il a travaillé souvent avec nous en tant que Ministre des Finances. Félicitations. Des félicitations également à l’Hon. Robert Gauvin, Ministre du Tourisme, du Patrimoine et de la Culture. La relation de la FCMNB avec tourisme, en tant que chef de file du secteur du tourisme d’hiver est bien documentée. Nous sommes heureux de travailler avec le Ministre Gauvin et pour s’assurer qu’il peut également se joindre à nous pour la randonnée provinciale « À vos motoneiges » cet hiver.
Nous osons croire que la Statégie de croissance du tourisme (SCT) du Ministère du Tourisme va continuer à évoluer et nous avons communiqué avec le Premier Ministre Higgs et avec le Ministre Gauvin que nous croyons que des investissements dans le tourisme sont stratégiquement intelligents s’ils sont basés sur des retours sur investissements prouvés. Nous avons également accordé notre appui d’ensemble à la SCT et avons demandé qu’il faut aller au delà des activités traditionnelles d’été au NouveauBrunswick. Des régions telles que les Monts Christmas, Moose Valley et les Hautes Terres de Fundy reçoivent beaucoup de neige, de basses températures, offrent aux résidents et aux visiteurs des sentiers surfacés, ainsi que de la motoneige hors-sentier (sur les terres publiques couronne). C’est pourquoi nous sommes de plus en plus reconnus comme une destination. Avec des hivers constants, des chutes de neige au delà de la normale, des saisons plus longues et des zones de randonnée aussi bonnes que toute autre juridiction de la motoneige en Amérique du Nord. Nous avons également indiqué notre intérêt envers le Plan d’action sur les sentiers (PAS) du gouvernement. Ceci est un document crucial mis en oeuvre pour le succès de tous les types de sentiers. Cependant, lorsqu’il fut publié, la motoneige n’a seulement « reçu » qu’un seul Sentier indicatif parmi les 11 choix sélectionnés par la province. Nous ne sommes pas d’accords que nos retours sur investissements furent présentés exactement ; une raison donnée pour les choix du gouvernement précédant.

Nous croyons que notre nouvelle Étude indépendante sur l’impact économique de la motoneige, qui sera effectuée en 2019, va conclure que les sentiers de motoneige auraient dû jouer un plus grand rôle dans le PAS et que les retours sur investissements publiés sur les investissements pour l’infrastructure de la motoneige pourraient être plus élevés que toute autre activité sur les sentiers au NouveauBrunswick. Nous savons que notre gouvernement va écouter ce raisonnement. KELLY’S GANGSTERS ROAR INTO THE 20TH – TAKING A HIT OUT ON CANCER
The legacy of Kelly Shires and the breast cancer Snow Run ran strong for their 20th Anniversary event. The amazing enthusiasm that riders brought to this 20th annual ride is one for the books. These amazing ladies suited up on February 2, 2019 and took to the trails leading out of Hidden Valley Resort in Huntsville and enjoyed pristine trail conditions with thanks to the volunteers of The Highland Rovers Snowmobile Club. The ladies enjoyed a fabulous ride on the Muskoka trails with a mid-day continuous peppering of snow. Raising over $585,000.00 for breast cancer patients across Canada, bringing the 20-year fundraising total to over $6.2 million for the Ontario Chapter! The theme this year was a Roaring 20’s/ Kelly’s Gangsters (taking a hit out on cancer) and was well received as we greeted many of Kelly’s Gangsters throughout the weekend. The event took place at Hidden Valley Resort in Huntsville, which has adopted this charity as their own. “Everyone at Hidden Valley Resort has fully embraced the charity. Whether you are speaking with managers, front desk staff, chef, kitchen staff, maintenance or housekeeping, they all contribute to making the Snow Run Volunteers and Participants feel at home” says Stenoff, event committee head. Not only did Hidden Valley pull out all of the stops for the event, they also donated $5,000.00 to the charity. The even began on Friday afternoon while the ladies enjoyed some shopping at the “pink market. The meet’n’greet kicked off Friday evening emceed by the fabulous Carey Moran from KICX FM. It is always a great night to catch up with old friends and mingle with the new ones. Camaraderie, games and dancing were enjoyed by all while the room was filled
with participants who embraced the theme, from Gangsters to flappers the room was lively, full of enthusiasm and camaraderie. Saturday morning started off an energy that one needs to experience as it is hard to put into words. Everywhere you looked you could see pink, from sleds to suits to each participant wearing their own pink inspired suits! Opening ceremonies commenced with a welcoming speech by Co-Founder, Suzy Stenoff, followed by a heartfelt moment of silence in memory of those who lost their battle to the disease and to those battling it every day. A surprise perfor-
mance of the charity theme song was sung by (Shania Twin) Donna Huber, who is a Shania Twain tribute artist. Kelly Shires chose the theme song, Man I feel like a Woman, by Twain, represents the spirit of the event and rallies an unexplainable enthusiasm from the crowd. The trail committee planned a perfect route and the ladies experienced a 150 km ride on fantastic trails. Special thank you to the MSR, Highland Rovers and Algonquin Snowmobile Club that helped to make the day and trails exceptional. Participants rode with their team of choice and comfort level including, Team Turtle, Bosom Cruisers, Team Rock, Dream Team and the Hooter Haulers. Each team rode the designated routes to Kearney for lunch, sponsored by Canada Cartage. The teams then headed back to Hidden Valley Resort to be greeted by hot chocolate and treats before hitting the showers to get ready for the Saturday night gala. The Saturday banquet opened with a warm welcome by Mistress of Ceremonies Beverly Thomson, Canadian journalist and a breast cancer survivor. Beverly and her daughter were able to enjoy the ride courtesy of Dave Larmand from BRP Inc. After a warm welcome by Councillor Tim Withey of Huntsville, Kelly’s father, Bob Childerhose, started off the fabulous dinner with grace and tell the group a little about Kelly. A special thank-you to our dinner sponsor again this year, Royal Distributing. And our guest speaker, breast cancer survivor & funding applicant Lyndsey McFarland. The event was full of fun special 20th Anniversary awards, speeches,
sponsor recognition, silent auction and closing the evening with announcing winners of the annual raffle. The person with the highest pledges this year took home a Sea-Doo Spark courtesy of Factory Recreation in Midland and Royal Distributing! When it comes to snowmobiling and more specifically free riding, the name Rob Alford has been at the top for 20 years. Rob’s talents have been featured in numerous videos and magazines over the years and he is currently a Ski-Doo Brand Ambassador. Rob’s true passion is snowmobiling and when he’s not out riding snowmobiles, guiding snowmobile groups at his lodge (www.logchalet.com) or being photographed on snowmobiles, he can be found fishing, enduro dirt biking or mountain biking.
