AGAMEE PRAKASHANI ENGLISH BOOK PUBLICATION LIBARATION WAR Major General K M Safiullah
BANGLADESH AT WAR Birth of Bangladesh as a separate physical and political entity on the map of the subcontinent is associated with the memories of pain , bitter struggle and great sacrifices . The myth of one Pakistan founded in 1947 on the basis of religion crumbled when , in the Eastern Wing of Pakistan , the brute military force was unleashed , on the sleeping Bengali population of Dhaka and elsewhere, on the night of 25th March 71. Thus when the edifice of friendship broke , there was no illusion left . Innocent people , children women and old alike were the victim of their atrocities . Our mothers and daughters were dishonored . The peace loving Bengali’s found no other option but to defend their lives , virtues and dreams . As a soldier General Safiullah , a son of the soil , could not remain a silent spectator and took up arms to protect the defenseless people . Like him many others took up arms . This initiated the war of liberation. He in his narration apart from the battles that he fought in his area of operation, narrated very lucidly about the battles fought in other areas too. While recounting various events he gave more importance to battlefield accounts to political picture . This made the narration more interesting. The use of charts and diagrams enriched the entire work, which would help the people to understand the battles how it was fought. Bangladesh ‘ s war of liberation was indeed a unique episode of history . It was a war with many facets, distinctive in nature, scope , sprite and totality . On one side was a large well trained army and on the other were a helpless and virtually unarmed people led by an odd assortment of ill armed soldiers and freedom fighters backed by the whole population in their just struggle. For these people there was no alternative but to win and they were ready to pay any price. They fought desperately and laid down their lives willingly. The courage, determination and tenacity with which they fought crowned them with glorious victory out of mounting defeats. The victory out of mounting defeats. The victory came at last.

AGAMEE PRAKASHANI ENGLISH BOOK PUBLICATION LIBARATION WAR Faruq Aziz Khan
SPRING 1971 This book is a personal account of the tumultuous events wire the communal divide of the subcontinent in 1971. The write was in his teens when he saw widespread violence and massacre of lives during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. Twenty-four years later, he witnessed another convulsion when violence and massacre of a different order and Bangladesh was born through sacrifice of millions. In 1971,as Pakistan’s military machine reached the remote town Kaptai on a cleansing operation the writer panicked and abandoned everything and started trekking through an unfamiliar terrain of hills and forests of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Mizoram to avoid military action .His simple and unpretentious narration is indeed moving and close to life .After making his way to Calcutta, he found an appointment as the secretary to Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed who was managing the Bangladesh Government in exile. From that vantage point the writer observed many incidents and gathered a lot of information, many of which have been placed in this volume. This book is hopefully a prelude to a more comprehensive work based on the experiences of the author. LIBARATION WAR Brig Gen (retd) Shamsuddin Ahmed
LIBARATION WAR & BANGLADESH TESTIMONY OF A SOLIDER Memoir of an individual provides readers with the scope to learn about many unknown facts of events that took place in the past. Thus a memoir always appears as a source of information on those events. Though Brig Gen (retd) Shamsuddin Ahmed has named his memoir, "Testimony of a Solider", it is basically a historical account or biography of the former general. He has written it on the basis of his personal knowledge and experiences gathered through his long career as a solider in the army. He joined the army during the Pakistan era; participated in the glorious Liberation War in 1971 and later witnessed closely many significant events in the army. These include assassinations of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, late President Ziaur Rahman, General Manzur, and some coups and counter coups in Bangladesh army since the country's independence. In his book, the author narrated how the army in independent Bangladesh was structured and shaped. He did not forget to mention the 'cold war' among the then senior army officers. He wrote how in early 1973 an Army Organisation Committee headed by Brigadier KM Shafiullah, chief of army staff, began to work out broad outlines of the organisational shape and structure of the Bangladesh Army. Brig Ziaur Rahman, Brig Khaled Mosharraf, Brig Shawkat Ali and Colonel MA Manzur were members of this committee. Shamsuddin was the member secretary of the committee. The committee meetings were held over a period of time. Shawkat and Manzur, who had to come from Chittagong and Jessore respectively, could not stay long in Dhaka. Shamsuddin in his book lauded efficiency of Manzur, who was later promoted to major general rank, and eventually murdered inside the Chittagong cantonment after the assassination of Ziaur Rahman. "But undoubtedly it was Colonel Manzur who dominated the meetings because when he spoke he did so with such clarity, reason and authority that one could hardly disagree with him. He was simply too brilliant an officer one could hardly win over in arguments," Shamsuddin testifies. He describes how there was visibly a streak of cold relation bordering on hostility between Brigadier Ziaur Rahman and Brigadier Khaled Mosharraf. Invariably Zia would disagree with Khaled on most issues no matter how sensible and logical the latter sounded. As Gen Shamsuddin worked at the army headquarters for quite a long time, he witnessed closely and gathered information and experiences on some major events in the army and his book is a gift for those who want to know some inside stories of the army in those days. PANNA KAISER needs no introduction to the people of Bangladesh. This book is an autobiography offering glimpses of her life from the cool shadowy nook of her younger years till the scorching days of 1972,Her childhood was spent in a village of Bangladesh. Her parents enthusiasm for music and woman’s education was too progressive to get the approval of the society they lived in . She pursued her formal education against all odds. Providence brought her face with Shaidullah Kaiser, a celebrated writer and a journalist by profession who believed in the politics of revolution. She had ever seen him. But she would not have imagined that the same man would propose to her some day. Their marriage too took place with a revolution in the back ground in 1969. But even before completion of three years of their happy and content married life Shahidullah had to take leave for ever from his beloved wife and from this world as well. While Bangladesh was engaged in its struggle for freedom, Shaidullah was killed by some traitors to this nation. A few members of the diabolic Al- Badar took him away. His aged mother, his affectionate sister, his newly born son were all left behind. Shahidullah disappeared from the face of earth –nobody could ever see even his dead body. Panna kaiser started her battle for meaningful existence again-a lonely soul though surrounded by so many. Through the flow of events in this memoir, one sees a woman struggling against a society dominated by men and an enironment plagued with prejudice and discrimination of all sorts – a struggle which at one stage is merged with our struggle for freedom and continues even beyond it. 15TH AUGUST A NATIOANL TRAGEDY The book had been contemplating to write down the incident of 15th August 1975and reveal the facts for the posterity. This incident has created enough confusion in the minds of the people. The Author also needs to clear his conscience by telling exactly what had happened. This incident was not only a tragedy for Bangabandhu‘s family, but also it was a National Tragedy For all of us The Bengali’s. In Bangladesh nobody ever imagined that a tragedy of such nature and magnitude could take place in our country, particularly with regard to Bangabandhu. When an incident of such nature takes place concerning the national leaders, the people also has the right to know about its details as it happened It is now up to the readers to say what else. The Author could have done to combat the situation that he faced. The Author in his write-up might have been a bit impolite on some involved person in but he does not regret that he mentioned them the way he did because what he wrote about them is what he believe they wery. The people should also know the truth. This was what the Author aimed at. Unfortunately he has been prosecuted in The people’s court and was convicted without a trial in his absence The Author would like The readers to go through the details in this book and give their judgments thereafter .In any case The Author shirked his responsibilities and never disowned his failure. AGAMEE PRAKASHANI ENGLISH BOOK PUBLICATION POLITICS Ghulam Akbar Chowdhury POLITICS IN BANGLADESH AND THE ROLE OF AWAMI LEAGUE This book presents an authentic and in-depth picture of Bangladesh politics and the role of Awami League. The author, from his early days, has always been associated with politics. He was all along a very trusted lieutenant of Bangladesh , Sheikh Mujibur Rahman , whom he adores as a great politics uncompromising leader and above all, a very large-hearted man .Though he always preferred to remain behind the scene and looked at things from that position ,perhaps few political leaders of Bangladesh could see things from such close angles as he did .This was because of his special relationship with Bangladesh and his family . The essays in this book depict the key role he played in the affairs of the Awami League and how he rescued the party from probable split because of internal conflict and misunderstanding. Many of the essays deal with matters relating to the Awami League. There are, however, some on contemporary issues and BNP- related matters. His later essay on reforms of the caretaker government and the Election Commission is a precursor of the ongoing dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition. In other essays, he has looked into the constrains and inabilities of the Judges the violation of the constitution by the Presidents, etc in the context of partisan politics in our country. The essays are straight – forward, pointed and analytical. Though there are repetitions here and there, these are perhaps necessary to understand the view points of Mr. Chowdhury. Mr. Chowdhury has dealt with various issues undaunted. As in his personal life, he never cared for somebody’s favour nor was afraid of anybody while writing these essays. Ever he did not spare the shortcomings of his own party and party men in these essays, which might cause irritation to some in the party. As such, his essays are unique in character. By reading these, one gets a deep insight into Bangladesh politics. APRIL 1999 | POLITICS | 9844019621 Cover: Drubha Esh | Hardcover | 8.8’’×5.5’’ 184 pages | 300.00 BDT

Syed Anwar Hussain WAR AND PEACE IN THE CHT RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT This book, a pioneering one of its kind, presents the Chittagong Hill Tracts insurgency issue in comprehensive details from origin through to the signing of the historic Peace Accord on 2 December 1997. At independence, Bangladesh inherited an incipient ethnopolitics that had been provoked by the misperceived nation- building policy intervention during the Pakistani rule in the early sixties. Over the years, this ethnopolitics deteriorated into a full- blown insurgency. The government responses to insurgency over the years were a mix of military, development and political policy overtures, but until the signing of the Peace Accord resolution of conflict appeared to be impossibility. Consequently, during these years Bangladesh has had to cope with a multidimensional insurgency that subjected scarce resources of the country to a heavy strain. The Peace Accord, an outcome of an unflinching commitment of the Awami League Government, specially, of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to conflict resolution, has created an opportunity for ushering the war-ravaged region into period of peace, stability and development. The peace achieved through an entirely bilateral process without any third party facilitation has also improved the international image of Bangladesh. But what has been achieved is only the beginning of a long and difficult journey along a highly tricky road leading towards the destination of ultimate peace. The desired transition from war to peace through a successful implementation of the peace Accord remains a challenge of enormous magnitude. Dr Badiul Alam Majumder LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL REFORMS KEYS TO POVERTY REDUCTION The book is a compilation of columns and essays. It contains eight chapters on various issues including local government, constitutional provisions, challenges to create a system of true local democracy, electoral system, parliament and the role of civil society.
Almost forty years after its inception. Bangladesh is still not out of crisis. Weakened by endemic poverty, widespread corruption, political infighting. Gender inequality and lacking a strong system of local democracy, the country has so far failed to secure the dreams of equality. Freedom and justice envisioned by those who fought for its freedom. Democracy has turned into ‘lootocracy’. The people’s house has been overrun by coterie interests, and the gap between rich and poor continues to widen, Reforms and leadership are desperately needed in all sectors to combat poverty. Empower the grassroots and get democracy back on track. This book is a detailed, finely rendered portrait of Bangladesh’s political landscape and the challenges it faces of articles as it prepares for the future. In a series of articles organized by subject, it discusses the major issues involved and proposes reform ideas and practical solution at every level, from the functioning of local government bodies to the higher judiciary, it lays out a new development paradigm that is truly people centered and provides role for politicians and common people, journalists and activists, and men and women to play in securing a self-reliant, stable for the country. In these times of great economic and political uncertainty, a revitalization of not only leadership is needed, but also of civic life, local government, women’s status and the unleashing of the indomitable spirit of Bangladeshi people. This vision is no less than a call for the fulfillment of Bangladesh’s enormous potential as a nation. AGAMEE PRAKASHANI ENGLISH BOOK PUBLICATION RESEARCH/LANGUISTIC Dr Humayun Azad PRONOMINALIZATION IN BENGALI This work which earned a University of Edinburgh phD for the author is a penetrating and exhaustive attempt to describe the syntax of the Bengali language. The traditional grammarians usually avoided the Bengali sentence structures, and before this work no attempt was made to study the Bengali syntax in a modern linguistic framework. Dr Humayun Azad’s Pronominalization in Bengali language (1926), is perhaps the most important work on any aspect of the Bengali language . Dr Azad had development a transformational generative case grammar model integration Noam Chomsky s and Charles J Fillmore s hypotheses about the underlying structure of natural languages in order to describe the process of Pronominalization, i,e, the derivation of deictic and anaphoric pronouns , in Bengali . This book comprises eleven chapters describing the base rules needed for Bengali, the structures of the Bengali noun phrases, cases and the structures of the Bengali noun phrases, cases and case markers, pronouns and their derivation, and the structures of relative , reflexive and reciprocal sentences in Bengali . Dr. Azad had gathered a wealth of information and had proposed a very deep and novel analysis of the data .His analysis is so incisive and incontrovertible that many traditional ideas about the Bengali sentences must be an invaluable aid to anyone who is interested in the structure of the Bengali language. The book brings Bengali linguistics up to date with the modern era. FEBRUARY 2010 | REFERENCE | 9789840412693 Cover :Shibu Kumer Shill | Hardcover | 8.8’’×5.5’’ 312 pages | 1000.00 BDT

AGAMEE PRAKASHANI ENGLISH BOOK PUBLICATION FICTION-SHORT STORIES
Helal Uddin Ahmed (Compiled and Translated by) ORIENTAL TALES SELECTED BANGLA FICTION This book is a compilation of twelve translated short stories originally written in Bangla during the second half of the 20th century. The first three stories were by Balaichand Mukherjee (1866-1979, pen –name Bonophool) an acclaimed fiction writer of West Bengal whose specialty was concise short stories. The first one (Death of a Reader) deals with how the reading habit of a vociferous reader undergoes transformation and ultimate demise. Bonophool’s second story Jagop narrates the predicament of a lawyer who tries to save his client by teaching him to act insane at the court. The third story (Dual Dreams) is on two parallel but failed affairs of a newlywed couple. These three are followed by a touching story of Syed Muztaba Ali (1904-1974) a noted humorist of East Bengal- about a sailor who travels to America in the early twentieth century for changing his fortune but ultimately all his toils in the land of his dreams meet an unexpected. Next in the line – up are two moving stories by the most prominent fiction writer of independent Bangladesh –Humayun Ahmed (1948-2012) on a mothers‘s travails after the loss of his son in the liberation war of Bangladesh ( Malaise ), followed by the predicament of a poetic father who lost his wife and is now charged with the upbringing of his daughter ( The Poet ) . Next comes a tragic story titled The Beggar by noted fiction writer Jharna Das Purakayastha (1945) of a couple who made sacrifices galore for the members of their joint family but now find themselves ignored disowned and neglected by the junior kith and kin at the far end of their lives . It is hoped that through these twelve stories the readers will have a glimpse and insight into the workings of an oriental society like Bangladesh and the comic or tragic lives of the people who live in such societies. AGAMEE PRAKASHANI ENGLISH BOOK PUBLICATION FICTION-NOVEL Kazi Shahid Ahmed
Bhoirob The epic nature of Bhoirob comes through in the novel’s memorable main character, Munshi Haider Ali Bhoirob . Bhoirob is a fantastic Promethean character in the physical beauty and strength of his body, the uprightness of his character, his dedication to social reformation, his stand against fanaticism, and in the expression of his deep affection for humanity in general. His wife, and one-time lover, Shiuli had said that when Bhoirob came to meet her, it was as though sixty bright lanterns lit up the room. The novel spans nearly seventy-three years and Bhoirob is present for seventyone of them. The year 1971 is significant to the development of the story because the Pakistani army, instigated by the region’s Rajakar Commander Khaleq and his brother, the Imam of the mosque, Maleq, raped and murdered his daughter and granddaughter. Bhoirob arrives immediately after this transpires and when he learns of that what happened, he grabs an axe and splits Malek’s head in two as he screams, “Here take your Pakistan! I’ve divided it into two!” Bhoirob displayed an insurmountable amount of courage when he refused to go to school simply because he would not serve the British; when he warned the then prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed during the Liberation War that not every Freedom Fighter was true ; when he fought a tiger and killed it using his sheer strength ; and when he broke through the conservative barriers of the Muslim society to indulge in numerous adventures with his lover, Shiuli. The author has not hesitated to describe the different social ills, including the many faces of prostitution, which Bhoirob and his lifelong friends from childhood, khokon and Dulal, who are themselves homosexuals, strive to solve. Bhoirob’s satirical and humorous outlook on these issues add another strong dimension to the story. His decisions and manner of problem-solving remind us of the character Don Corleone from Mario Puzo’s novel, The Godfather. The difference is that Puzo’s character presents no humor or satire while Kazi Shahid Ahmed’s is full of fun. Tarik Sujat MYTHS, SKYBORNE Accomplishment of Tarik Sujar in a short span of time is a pleasant surprise. From the very beginning Tarik Sujat made it clear that his style and diction were meant to follow an entirely different course over time. His pursuit was exploration of the Sky; his voice echoed the music of starts. In a previous collection of poems, his focus was on time moving in the wrong direction. In this anthology, we see time falling behind as Tarik marches ahead. His soft brushstrokes weave a bright drapery of aesthetic realization. Along the lines of the sixty lyrics of ‘’Myths, Skyborne’’. A reader will come across a sky studded with stars mingled with a subdued voice – comely, serene, and lyrical. TRAVEL
Syed Ashraf Ali This Wide Wide World Based on travels, previously published in Daily star. The world is very interesting place with diverse culture, history and geographical feaftures. syed ashraf ali tells the stories of the people and places with an eye on these diversities. His sojourns in the land of kafirs in an almost inaccesible valley tucked in the mountainous northern part of Pakistan provides an insight northern part of Pakistan provides an insight into a little known but mysterious tribe. His account of Finland steeped almost in the North Pole provides an account of the Finns and a genuinely Finish invention- the sauna Bath. He even digs deep, literally speaking, in the underground cities built by ancient turks in what was once known as Anatolia to escape from the invaders. From Asia he turns his attention to Australia. Australia draws our fascination for the Australian’s rather unfamiliar accents. The author recounts how quickly Bangladesh ‘Be-iman’ in Australian tongues. Tourists destinations in our neighbouring countries may not sound attractive but visits to Shillong, Darjeeling and even Myanmar could be as exciting as those to Europe or America in terms of natural beauty and exotic ambience. The stories on these places might even induce the readers to peek into the beauty of these near by spots. AUGUST 2003 | TRAVEL | 9844017602 Cover: Qayyum Chowdhury | Hardcover | 8.8”×5.5” 136 pages | 200.00 BDT SYED ASHRAF ALI spent nearly his entire adult life in the world of money and banking, mostly in the central bank and lately as the chief executive of a commercial bank. He even found himself wallowing literally in the realm of money as the chief executive of the country’s money making outfit at Gazipur, known as Security Printing Press (Bangladesh) Ltd. With so many mundane things occupying his thoughts he had little opportunity to delve into the world of letters. Nonetheless, he took time away from his busy schedules to write a few books on foreign exchange and international finance; these in time became authoritative text books in the country on this subjects. An honours graduate from the Dhaka University, he joined the state Bank of Pakistan as an Officer in 1962 and rose to the position of Executive Director in the Bangladesh Bank. Syed Ashraf Ali was born in 1940 in his native village of amdanga in the Narail district.
