irst and foremost, welcome to Mason! You are about to begin one of the most amazing times of your life and we hope that you are as excited to start your journey as we are to be a part of it. Here at Mason, you will experience an era of change and growth (both intellectually and personally) in ways and capacities that you could never possibly predict. Mason will become the home you never knew you were missing; that you couldn’t possibly imagine life without. Here you will make lifelong friendships, have incredible access to networking opportunities, make connections with some of the world’s best professors, and ultimately, you will have the opportunity to become your best self. Mason has so much to offer that we could fill the rest of this magazine just listing every club, sports team, activity, job opportunity, and event we can think of and still not cover half the experiences you will have that will redefine you. It can seem a bit overwhelming and change is always a little nerve-wracking, however if there was ever a time to grab life by the horns, put yourself out there, and try new things, now would be that time. Mason is an all-encompassing environment. Academics are a big part of going to college, but are only one part of the recipe. That recipe looks like: 1 part academics, 2 parts clubs/sports, 1 part free time, and at least 1 part-time job. Don’t forget the secret ingredient: YOU! You are the one that makes this all work and you are the one who gets to enjoy every single minute of this crazy, hectic, amazing time of your life. Your college experience is uniquely yours. Being at Mason gives you a feeling, and you won’t notice it in the day to day, you might not even notice it until you head home and come back, but one day you will notice this indescribable feeling of belonging that can only be described as feeling at home.

s a senior in high school, I knew what I wanted to major in, where I wanted to study, everything of my college life mapped out. Upon graduation, all of my hard work and planning went down the toilet, because that wasn’t what I wanted at all. I didn’t know which school I would attend or what I wanted to major in. When I came to Mason, I was undecided with no idea of who I wanted to be. I was nervous to not have everything figured out. The truth is, everyone is just as lost as you are. I didn’t know where to start. I kept getting emails from the Center for Academic Advising and Retention (CAART), insisting I go see an advisor to select my courses. I visited my advisor at CAART so many times, she began pushing me to become a Peer Academic Advisor. I joined clubs, contacted people from flyers around campus, and soon, I started to figure out what I wanted. I took classes introducing me to the injustice running rampant in our world. I joined clubs dedicated to improving lives around the world. In my last month as a freshman, I declared my major. You don’t need to have everything figured out. There are plenty of people willing to help you. Try things that you’re not used to, talk to people challenging your views, and seek out opportunities, because you’re not going to find your niche just sitting there.

First-person stories about overcoming challenges and finding your place here at Mason.
M
y whole life I have been involved with theater. From playing Mary in the ‘Christmas’ play in first grade to my final role in my senior year as a greeter in ‘Shrek,’ theater has always been something I enjoyed. I never really considered myself a “theater-kid” and don’t plan to pursue it professionally, but I never realized how important performing had become to me. When I came to Mason, I was looking to branch out and I explored vastly different areas, straying away from performing arts. While I thrived in other areas of involvement, something was missing. I missed performing, but I no longer had the time to commit to one of Mason’s amazing student theater shows. Luckily, the Mason Improv Association came to my Acting 1 class and introduced me to the wonderful world of improvisation. As a complete beginner, I was nowhere near ready to be on M.I.A.’s Team, but luckily they were able to guide me to the weekly Open Improv Jams led by Janey Robideau. They are a platform for people new to improv to try their hand at it and learn this performance art. They quickly became the best part of my week. With practice, I was able to participate in a tournament in D.C. called the Fighting Improv Smackdown Tournament (F.I.S.T.). I couldn’t imagine my freshman year without improv and all of the amazing people I met through the Jams. I was able to connect an old part of me with a completely new opportunity here at Mason, I am thrilled to say, I have found my niche. Summer /Fall 2016 | 3

Throughout my high school career, I was involved with almost everything: the welcoming committee, peer mentoring and tutoring, theater, student government, and yearbook. I hoped to do some of those same things here on campus, but I had no idea how! I had to apply for a job on-campus for my work-study and I happened to apply at the Office of Student Media. Little did I know at the time what this office had to offer. The yearbook, newspaper, radio station, cable channel and journals all worked under this office! I could feel a horseshoe grow on my forehead, because I was unbelievably lucky! Working at the office was a gateway for me to explore all of the different avenues to getting involved. I worked with Resident Advisors and they encouraged me to apply to become one as well. The application process had to be the longest three/four months of my life. Submit your application, wait for an email, attend group process,

hen I first stepped on to the George Mason campus, my breath was taken away. The scenery was exquisite and everyone was friendly as could be! However, the first seed of doubt began to creep into my mind. “Are you going to fit in?” “What if you get lost on campus?” “Is Mason going to feel like home?” Being on a campus that is comprised of 34,000 students scared me to death, because I graduated from a tiny private school. Mason almost felt too big for me when I first toured, but I knew that I had to let go of my fears in order to grow into the Patriot I wanted to become.
“IT WAS THEN THAT I REALIZED THAT YOU DON’T CONFORM TO MASON, BUT MASON CONFORMS TO YOU.” wait for an email, have an individual interview, wait for an email, and then finally you find out if you were offered the position or not. That horseshoe on my forehead must’ve grown even larger, because I was lucky enough to have been offered that position! WGMU Radio is Mason’s on-campus student-run radio station and they work out of the Office of Student Media. During my Spring semester, I became the Music Director’s assistant and spent endless, unpaid hours listening to music (ranging from very good to really bad) and sorting through pages of emails. Towards the end of the semester, the application process for that position became available. Me, being the little freshman I am, began to have those same doubts that I had at the beginning of my freshman year. “Am I going to fit in
here?” Four other students applied, all older than me, and the panic began to set in. Weeks went by and I was starting to think the worst. That was until a ping from my inbox got my hopes up. In an instant, I was on cloud nine! Not only would I be a Resident Advisor for incoming freshmen next year, but I’ll also be Music Director for WGMU! It was then that I realized that you don’t conform to Mason, but Mason conforms to you. I applied to be several things prior to the positions I was offered: a Mason Ambassador and a Patriot Leader. Of course, I was not offered positions for those, but it’s OK. Not every position that is offered here is for you. The saying that, “when one door closes, two more open” is true at Mason. Sometimes you need to go after what you want and get involved, but sometimes opportunities come to you without you even trying. Don’t get discouraged when you don’t hear back from an organization or office, because there must be something out there that is better for you. The incredible thing about Mason is that you’re exposed to so much more than in high school. Diversity applies not only to the student body, but to the opportunities that are available here. If you happen to find that Mason doesn’t have a club for you, then start one! Mason is what you make it. If you want your college to be your home away from home, then set roots here and connect with people and organizations. Live your freshman year outside of the dorm and have a true Patriot Experience, because it is only at Mason when you’re here, you’re home. Summer /Fall 2016 | 5

After shifting my career path from Physics to Aerospace Engineering, I met a surprising amount of students who were interested in the same field as I was. Despite our passions, we faced a common problem: no majors were tailored to Aerospace.

F
or most of my high school career, I envisioned my future as a Physics major, but after the first week of living on campus at Mason, my plans had already changed radically. As incoming freshmen, you’ll likely be told the old saying, “it’s less about the grades you make and more about the hands you shake,” and I completely agree. Unless I had gone through the process of talking with my advisors, other students, and the experts of the field, I would not be in the position I am today. Every time I talked with a staff member of the College of Science or the Volgenau School of Engineering, I felt like my goals applied more towards Engineering than Physics. Thanks to Mason’s accessibility of career and academic advising services, I was able to quickly discover opportunities around every corner, and was never confused about what I would enjoy doing the most.
To fill that space we created our own niche, founding the George Mason Aerospace Engineering Club. Here, we look to invest our time in the Aerospace world: club projects, inter-collegiate competitions, and industry conferences are a few ways that we have decided it best to explore our passion.
This was all made possible through funding Mason provides to its registered student organizations. The process of creating a club of your own is very easy. The Office of Student Involvement provides an official digital handbook with information on beginning and
maintaining your organization. As any good organization requires effective leadership, the handbook also details the carrying out of roles and responsibilities of organization officers.
Finding your niche is never to be a solely personal adventure. It is always best when you communicate and immerse yourself with like-minded individuals who want to follow their interests into future careers. I am so grateful to be part of a community that uses streamlined and comprehensive programs like student organizations and advising services to empower even the busiest students to pursue their passions beyond the classroom. WORDS OF WISDOM FROM STUDENT MEDIA LEADERS “Immerse yourself in leadership and service learning, early on, and completely. Attending a university is a great societal privilege that few are afforded. Surround yourself with those who stand out boldly, tell the truth even when it’s hard, and who challenge you to grow beyond your own comfort. Take all of these moments of impact with you, and when you reach your goals, help someone else reach theirs.”
“I didn’t think I had a lot of stuff at first, I just thought I was more prepared then everybody else. It wasn’t until I started to look at my items during the Spring semester that I realized how much stuff that I never used. Half the clothes I brought I never wore. I also brought every pair of shoes that I owned; I only stuck to five. That was about two drawers of space wasted. My biggest waste of space, however, was my bicycle. Granted it was on a bike rack outside, but it stayed there forever, and it ended up becoming rusted from the rain and snow.”

Curiosity. My ability to pursue my dreams in a higher institution of education initiated my curiosity and sparked my desire to learn! Because I am the first of my family to go to college, I can share my knowledge with my family members on what I have learned. This motivates me to question the unquestionable and learn everything I can. My curiosity has helped me explore new paths and take risks to achieve new goals I have set for myself. Patience. As the first person in my family to go on this journey, I have been determined to reach my own goals. However to do this, I learned that I have to master the art of patience. When I set foot on campus I was worried that I would not be able to fit into the role of a “college student because of my lack of knowledge of the college experience. That changed when I realized that everyone is on the same path to his or her goal and my personal goals
I have gained more confidence in my goals and I have become more aware of how to initiate the process that I have to take to reach my goals.

n my endeavors as a firstgeneration college student I have learned several key skills to help me throughout my college journey: curiosity, patience, and courage.
"BECAUSE I AM THE FIRST OF MY FAMILY TO GO TO COLLEGE, I CAN SHARE WHAT I HAVE LEARNED. THIS MOTIVATES ME TO QUESTION THE UNQUESTIONABLE AND LEARN EVERYTHING I CAN." should not be compared with others. My journey is my own and instead of being impatient, I have learned that college itself is a learning process. I have to take each opportunity one step at a time and not overwhelm myself or compare myself to the journey of others. By being patient with myself,
Courage. Through my curiosity and patience, I have been able to come out of my comfort zone. I have now become a positive person and value myself more as a student of George Mason University. Luckily, Mason has helped me become more courageous and have more confidence in myself. With my courage I have been able to push myself out of my comfort zone, and by doing so more opportunities have arisen. My courage has allowed me to take on the challenge of becoming the first member of my family to attend college, and for that I am very grateful. Although my journey at Mason has just begun, I have learned to be appreciative of what I have and to strive for what I want to accomplish. I am the first person in my family to attend college, but I am not the last. I hope that my knowledge will inspire my family members and students to reach for their goals, challenge themselves academically, and aim for success. Summer /Fall 2016 | 11

I am now a Resident Advisor and without my involvement, I would not have this opportunity. Getting involved on campus has made Mason my home and I guarantee you it will change your life.

The George Mason Aerospace Engineering Club, or the Aero Club for short, is a student organization that will be open this coming Fall semester to any student interested. Several events have been pre-planned, with opportunities designed to involve students in any facet of their interest. There is the yearly Design-Build-Fly competition. Taking a step further into the field of flying machines, autonomous quadcopters rely on ever-changing computer programming to function and improve. For those looking for a shoe-in to the industry, there are several East Coast aviation conferences that also provide insight into the ongoing trends and challenges facing the aerospace engineering 14 | Freshman Focus
industry. Do not be daunted by the seemingly complex tasks, though: the only requirement to join is a motivation to learn and understand the aeronautical systems we are dealing with today.

o you ever look up to the sky and watch airplanes streak across? At George Mason University it’s a common sight to see contrails from planes traveling to the nearby Dulles International Airport, crisscrossing the sky throughout the day. One new student organization hopes to give the university something more to look to the skies for: not airliners 35,000 feet above, but instead, autonomous flying vehicles that inspire and interest others in a rapidly advancing industry.
MY EXPERIENCE: "I started thinking of beginning a new club only after participating in other engineering clubs at Mason. They’re amazing organizations, but when a quarter of my 100-student Mechanical Engineering 151 class said they desired an Aerospace career more than mechanical, I knew there was huge potential for a new student organization.” u @GMU_AERO_CLUB
Professional experience and networking can be obtained through the several East Coast aviation conferences that provide insight into the ongoing trends and challenges faced by the industry, as well as a shoein for students looking to penetrate the business contract system of the aerospace world. Don’t be daunted, though: the only requirement to join is a motivation to learn and understand the technologies we deal with. Finally, the most important feature of the Aero Club is friends! It’s inspiring to be surrounded by those interested in the same developments and ideas as you. Amongst our members, we have a diverse range of experience, from freshmen to seniors and Electrical Engineering to Astronomy. Participating in the club’s engaging activities is a surefire way to meet others with contagious passions and to in turn build networks of respect, trust, and enthusiasm for the bright futures ahead.

Through the sport I’ve learned many valuable lessons about my individuality and how to take advantage of my attributes as well. As a college student, studies become more demanding and there is less time for extracurricular activities. The moment I set my racquet down in college my life didn’t feel the same. Something was missing. Tennis gave my life meaning, so I had to get back into it. In the fall, I joined the club team and played at the Country Club of Fairfax. Being involved with tennis has kept me in shape as an athlete, and has trained my mind to think sharply. The sport has a lot of

F
or some of you, college will be the first time you will have to share a room with another person and it’s not always a walk in the park. These four tips should help you make it through the school year:
Don’t expect your roommate to be your best friend. Some of you will become best friends with your roommate, and some of you will become archenemies. It’s really the luck of the draw. College is about experiences and sometimes, the experiences you want might not be the same as your roommate’s. While it’s great to have a good relationship, don’t feel any pressure to become best friends, just do your best to co-exist. Take your roommate contract seriously. After a few weeks on campus, your RA will stop by to talk with you and your roommate about setting ground rules for living in the dorm. Even if some of the questions seem silly, this is the best time to talk about any possible issue that could arise like borrowing clothes or overnight guests. Set these boundaries early so that if you truly do have an irreconcilable problem, you can defer to your RA and the contract to fix it. Respect your roommate’s time and space. It’s always important to remember that you’re sharing a living space with someone else, so do your best to be respectful. Sleeping is a really valuable asset in college. So when your roommate can’t seem to understand that binge watching Netflix at 2 a.m. isn’t great for your REM cycle, just politely ask them to turn off the TV or watch it somewhere else. Don’t be afraid to speak up and stand your ground. Always communicate. The key to any successful relationship is communication, especially with the person (or people) you live with. Whether your roommate is in your top three on Snapchat or you only talk when the mess on their side of the room is out of control, make sure to establish a communication structure that works for the both of you. You’re both living on your own for the first time, which can be both fun and scary. Try to make the most out of dorm life, without stressing out in the process. Summer /Fall 2016 | 27

rom the moment I toured Mason I knew that I belonged here. However, I never imagined being on the path I am on now. I went from an interest in Nursing, to now being a Communication major with a concentration in Public Relations. I have been fortunate enough to get involved with a wide range of programs, and you can too. It is because of my involvement that I feel confident in my field. I am a Mason Ambassador, which is a cool group of students that give tours to interested students. Who knows, I might have given one or two of you a tour. With my membership in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), I have been able to learn and develop towards my field in Public Relations. I have been presented with networking and career opportunities that I could have never imagined without this organization. PRSSA welcomes all majors and strives to help each of its members thrive in their field. I have also been fortunate enough to be a part of a student-run organization named Patriot Activities Council (PAC). You might have been followed on social media by us already (@gmu_pac), and we hope you followed back, because we are already planning some amazing events for you. To kick off your freshman year, we have planned Mason Mayhem for August 27th, 2016. Activities, food, and games on each floor of the Johnson Center is only the beginning. Plus, what would Mason be without opportunities to get involved? If you are interested in planning, setting up, or promoting campus events, the PAC Street Team is the home for you. Each of these amazing groups helped me develop into a stronger student and I hope that you too can find your various homes here at Mason. Welcome again to Mason Nation. Summer /Fall 2016 | 33

our years ago I stepped onto the Mason campus and knew this was the right school for me. I was excited about all of the opportunities Mason had to offer being so close to Washington, D.C., but I found so much more than that starting my freshman year. I found a home. I’ve spent most of my time at Mason making a home in the Office of Student Media taking photos for the student newspaper. I had the pleasure of working on the first issue of Freshman Focus as well as seeing the changes take place at the newspaper as Broadside transformed into what is now Fourth Estate. Working in Student Media also led me to another new passion, playing underwater hockey. With this group I have traveled from the East Coast to the West and across borders to compete in various tournaments. I couldn’t have found a more fun-loving and delightful group of friends than my teammates and coworkers at the newspaper. I know I will always have a home with these groups at Mason.

cademic advisors are one of the best resources offered on campus, yet very few students take advantage of this valuable resource. Whenever it is close to course selection time for the next semester, students are bound to find their inox filled with “Go See Your Advisor” emails and may even see that phrase written in sidewalk chalk across campus. As someone who has done just that on multiple occasions, I highly recommend that my peers heed those emails and reminders and set up an advising appointment. Most advisors go beyond the call of duty to help their students with everything from course selection, major declaration (or change), and long-term academic planning. During my freshman year at Mason, I met with my advisors at least twice
each semester and they helped me declare a major and make a course map of my next three years here at Mason. There is an advising department for each major and general advising is available at the Center for Academic Advising and Retention (CAART). Students struggling to pursue a specific major can visit any of the advisors in different departments in order to learn more about a major, minor, or concentration. Advisors can help you map out the courses you must complete in order to graduate and advise you on the paths you can take to best achieve your goals and ultimately pursue your desired career path. But don’t take my word for it — here is what students told Freshman Focus when we asked about the benefits of adacemic advising. u
“My advisor, Dr. Hurley, is absolutely amazing. He has helped me get through the tough times, registering for classes and even tutoring me for exams when my professor couldn’t follow through. He is in the Psychology Department for undergraduates and I am so lucky to have him!” — Selena Janelle Winston, Psychology “I went into my appointment with a lot of questions, came out with all of them answered and even had answers to questions that I didn’t even know I needed to ask!” — Stephanie Trejo, Integrative Studies “I saw the advisors take their time and put effort in with each student. They went through my worries and questions one by one and I utilized their walk-in hours often. They also were very understanding and did not make me feel judged at all since I was having trouble deciding on a major and picking appropriate classes. Their suggestions were very helpful.” — Stephen Buchanan, Global Affairs
