ENJOY THE OUTDOORS

PLAYING AND ROMPING AROUND

What do you love to do on a beautiful summer day? Imagine what exactly you would like to do in each individual area of your garden. Now with this in mind, designing your own personal comfort zone will be a breeze.

For the wee ones, a sandbox is enough to create their very own kingdom. Bigger children happily explore climbing frames. And the even older ones lock themselves away in a treehouse built on their very own. Give your children the freedom to design and redesign their own part of the garden. Even very little children can work with a paintbrush, the bigger ones also with saw and hammer. The right wood and suitable for children's toys wood finishes are available from Osmo.

READING AND WATCHING THE CLOUDS Good for the soul: a place to retreat in the great outdoors for a little break from the turmoil of everyday life. Do not let anyone interfere with the design of your favourite spot. Make your own decisions about what it should look like. Do you want a bright blue lounge chair in a thicket of bamboo? A romantic pink garden bench with view over the valley? Or perhaps a huge beanbag chair hidden away from nosy neighbours? Go ahead: your dreams are worth realizing.

ENJOYING MEALS WITH FRIENDS At a large, welcoming table, it is even nicer to sit with friends. But, what happens if the table gets wet? In contrast to common belief, a wooden table does not always have to be dragged out of the rain. Many wood species contain natural extractives that protect the wood against mould stains and rot. Some other wood species need to be protected with a water-repellent, but also microporous finish, for example with Wood Protector from Osmo.

SHOW PROFILE TIMBER CLADDING. ALWAYS DIFFERENT, ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL. FOR GENERATIONS. Timber cladding is like a dress for the house. Protection against moisture, coldness and the sun it should provide and obviously it should look good, too. There are some basic rules for the construction and protection of wood – the rest is a question of taste. Make your home a castle. Modern profiles and finishes open up numerous possibilities for the design of your cladding. Find inspiration, discover your own individual style and get started. Your local Osmo dealer will gladly assist.

8

Wood and finishes for the exterior

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THIS: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN CHOOSING TIMBER CLADDING PARTIAL OR COMPLETE TIMBER CLADDING Should the whole house be cladded in wood or only part of it? In modern architecture and when renovating older buildings, partial timber cladding is often used in order to structure the building elements or to add an accent. Rhombus profiles are especially popular for this type of cladding. Complete cladding, on the other hand, wraps around the entire house and protects the underlying wall construction against moisture. In connection with microporous heat insulation, wood offers an excellent energy balance.

INSTALLATION

PROFILES

To prevent moisture from collecting under the timber cladding, air must circulate from the bottom to the top. For horizontal profiles, this only works with a support structure made of laths: vertical laths, horizontal profiles. For vertical profiles, you need an extra layer: vertical base laths, horizontal load-bearing laths and vertical profiles.

The right profile to choose depends on your own personal taste and the area of use because not every profile is suitable for every form. Osmo also offers coloured profiles ready for installation – even in the colour of your choice.

PROTECTION AND FINISHES WOOD SPECIES Larch and Douglas Fir are high quality and robust wood species which are very well-suited as timber cladding. The lively wood grain stays visible when you use the almost invisible Osmo UV-Protection-Oil or a transparent wood stain to protect the wood. Nordic Spruce will also last generations with the right type of wood finish. It is especially suitable for the opaque wood finish Country Colour.

Wood has to be able to breathe in order to retain its lasting beauty. Therefore you should only use microporous finishes on your timber cladding – such as the finishes available from Osmo. Whether opaque Country Colour or a transparent wood stain: all of these finishes are based on natural oils, which protect the wood and at the same time they enable the exchange of moisture. Another advantage: breathable finishes, in contrast to lacquers, do not crack or flake.

COSINESS WITHOUT FRILLS AND FLUFF Typical Scandinavian: quaint houses with a clear layout, saddle roof and timber cladding in cheerful colours. At first sight they look lively and friendly like a colourful bunch of farm flowers set out on a festive table. Nordic design dispenses with all swirls and curlicues – and thus it sets high quality, natural materials all the more effectively in focus. In Scandinavia it is common to install the wooden profiles vertically. Thereby the dimensions of the house are optically stretched in height.

TRADITIONS IN A MODERN COMBINATION A bit Italian, a little Swiss, some Swedish and a lot of individuality: the farmhouse style picks up good ideas throughout Europe and fits them together to meet our requirements for modern and comfortable living. An example of this can be seen in this country home. The large overhanging eaves are traditional for wooden house and are still today a sensible way to protect the cladding against wind and rain. The floorto-ceiling windows, on the other side, are a novelty in timber architecture. Lovers of the natural look of wood tones can also protect the timber cladding with a transparent wood stain.

MODERN WOODEN ARCHITECTURE Wood dominates modern architecture. It does not matter whether in private housing or grand museum projects – even more architects are combining this renewable natural product with steel, glass, concrete or brick. Also subsequently installed, partial timber cladding adds significant value to a home and creates a structured look. The warm and lively aura of timber cladding can be accentuated through the colour tones of Natural Oil Woodstain Effect which imitate the natural patina of wood.

TIMBER CLADDING ANSWERS

1 What should I watch out for so that my timber cladding lasts a long time?

2

Wood is a very hard-wearing material if it is processed correctly. Experts speak of three types of wood protection: constructional, physical and chemical. Constructional wood protection has the highest priority in this list. Examples of this type of protection are sufficient roof overhang and avoiding waterlogging. Physical wood protection can be understood as protecting wood against moisture and UV radiation through a microporous wood finishes such as Country Colour of One Coat Only HSPlus from Osmo. These finishes are free of biocides.

Do I need chemical wood protection for my cladding? If the wood construction and finish fit, then chemical wood protection is usually unnecessary. Biocidal Country Colour Extra and Natural Oil Woodstain offer a surface film

16

protection against fungus, moss and lichens on the finish. Deeply effective, chemical wood protection with Osmo WR Impregnation against rot, blue stain and wood-destroying insects is only necessary in extreme cases.

3

Can I install cladding profiles by myself? Attaching the profiles to the load-bearing laths is no problem. But careful: around the windows, roof and wall connections, it can get difficult. It is also essential to follow the guidelines of your local carpenter’s trade association.

O: THE M S O M O R F SERVICE HOICE C R U O Y F O COLOUR cladur choice of yo work for you: ready Let us do the your choice, of ur lo co e th in as small as ding profiles d. For areas he is fin yor to install, fact Osmo. ailable from 1 m2 : only av

4

How often does timber cladding have to be recoated? That depends on the weather, the direction the cladding is facing and the wood finish. As a general rule, light-coloured wood stains should be reapplied every 2-3 years and darker stains every 4-8 years. Sanding is unnecessary for Osmo Country Colour, One Coat Only HSPlus and Natural Oil Woodstain.

5

Is there clear protection available for my timber cladding? Yes, with UV-Protection-Oil. This innovative finish from Osmo is almost invisible and protects the wood against sunrays. UV protection factor 12 retains the natural colour tone of the wood approximately twelve times longer than unprotected. The natural greying process of the wood is thereby slowed down significantly.

42 POSSI BILITIESFEEL THE DIFFERENCE: STRUCTURED DECKING Smooth, ribbed or grooved was till now the only choice when it came to the surface design of decking. But why? After all, thanks to today’s modern wood-processing machines surfaces can also be created that resemble an antique or handcrafted character. The various surface structures not only please the eye, but also feel great underfoot. Osmo offers Creatv-Decking in two wood species, three surface structures and seven colour tones: that makes 42 design possibilities to choose from for your own exclusively designed decking.

YOUR CHOICE: WOOD SPECIES DOUGLAS FIR

EUROPEAN LARCH

Originally this type of conifer is from the Rocky Mountains; due to its resistance and fast growth, it has been cultivated in parts of Europe since as early as the 19th century. The wood is reddish brown and exhibits distinct knots and a lively wood grain

The vibrant wood grain with large knots and a red-brown to golden brown colouring makes Larch an especially attractive wood. The high content of resin makes it especially resistant to moisture and wood pests. Therefore Larch is for many the first choice for use in the exterior.

YOUR CHOICE: SURFACES WAVE

SCRAPED

BRUSHED

The sculpted effect of the gently waved surface lets your wooden decking shine in a whole new light. An individualized alternative for people who love that something special.

Some people think that wood first develops its true character with age. These decking boards are reminiscent of antique floorboards.

With this surface, the natural wood grain clearly stands out. By brushing along in the wood grain the softer, brighter early wood is more strongly removed than the harder, darker late wood. Underfoot these decking boards have an especially natural feeling.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: ANTI-SLIP DECKING OIL Watch out, slippery! On wet wood, there is no profile that will help. If you want to be on the safe side, you should treat your wooden decking with Anti-Slip Decking Oil. This can also be done long after the decking has been installed – and really quickly with the Flooring Brush. For your safety.

INSTALLATION OF TIMBER DECKING

WELL-VENTILATED FOR A LONG LIFE

What you need:

Wood is a rewarding material when you give it what it needs: a firm base, sufficient ventilation and good water drainage. We will show you here the installation of tongue and groove decking boards with a visible fixation. As an alternative, Osmo also offers for almost all wood species the Decking Clipper and specialized Clips for Thermowood Ash and Multi-Deck for a hidden fixation. Decking with a tongue and groove connection can be used for continuous installation.

DECKING WOOD AND BPC DECKING TILES ACCESSORIES

Wood and finishes for the exterior

SUB-CONSTRUCTION 1

First pre-drill on two places diagonally from each other into the overlapping edge of the decking board.

4

2

TIP: For additional hold, we recommend gluing the overlapping edge with PU adhesive before fixing with screws.

3

Afterwards you can fix the splice joint into an “endless profile” with screws. TIP: Use a level to ensure a straight alignment.

5 > SELECTION

TIP

For decking boards, careful selection and awareness of local conditions is especially important. Let your local Osmo dealer consult you before the installation and by all means follow the local guidelines and rules for carpentry. Cut the endless profiles into the required length. The cut-off end pieces can be used to start the next row.

The sub-construction must withstand warping through swelling and shrinkage. Therefore fix the wood with metal angles onto the solid foundation, e.g. concrete slab. (Required gaps in the sub-construction can be found in our decking brochure on p. 70.)

LAYING DECKING 1

When the sub-construction is aligned and fixed, you can fix the decking boards with screws. Start by laying the boards next to the exterior wall of the house. To ensure a sufficient amount of rear ventilation, we recommend keeping a distance of at least 8 mm from the exterior wall.

4

2

Measure the widths of the decking boards. Depending on the moisture content, the widths can differ from the stated value. If the board is somewhat wider, subtract the difference to the standard value from 5 mm in order to achieve the correct distance to the previous board (e.g. 5 mm – 2 mm = 3 mm). If it is somewhat narrower, the difference must be added to the 5 mm.

E V EN E A S IE WITH CLIP R FIXATION

3

For T+G decking boards, the joint must not lie directly on the sub-construction. The tongue and groove connection enables sufficient water drainage.

5 > DURABILITY

TIP

The durability of your decking depends heavily on a stable and well-prepared sub-surface. Make sure that the water under the decking can drain. Ideal is a slight downward slope (1 – 2 %) away the exterior wall of the house.

Attach each board with two screws to the construction timber. Even the shortest boards must lie on at least two battens.

You can lay our T+G decking boards in a random laying pattern.

Only use Osmo stainless steel screws with a length that is about 2.5 times longer than the decking thickness.

GARDEN: WOOD & FINISH ANSWERS

1 Which finish is suitable for exterior wood? Definitely choose an oil-based, microporous finish. Wood must be able to release moisture. Lacquers are not suitable: they flake off when moisture seeps under finish through very fine cracks. Osmo Country Colour and Natural Oil Woodstain are a good choice.

2 How do I save time when finishing wood? One coat is enough: the oil-based finishes from Osmo adhere to wood without primer. When renewing the surface, they can be easily recoated – without any sanding. This saves an enormous amount of time.

3 In which weather conditions can I coat wood? Osmo wood finishes can be applied seamlessly also in hot weather and they do not dry out so fast. The wood must be dry and frost-free. No need to worry about storage conditions: when tightly closed, Osmo wood finishes withstand both frost and heat.

24

4 How do I protect the wood against fungus attack? Avoid waterlogging! The most important protection measures are a construction suitable for wood and a moisture-resistant wood finish based on oil. For some areas, an additional film protection is advisable. It prevents moss and fungus from settling on the finish. There are also finishes with biocides: Natural Oil Woodstain and Country Colour Extra. The normal Country Colour and One Coat Only HSPlus are both free of biocides.

5 How do I clean garden furniture? The quickest cleaning method is with the new Osmo Teak-Oil Spray in a practical spray can. Just spray the surface, rub and finished. A more thorough cleaning job is possible with the Garden Furniture Maintenance Kit. It contains Wood Reviver Power-Gel, Teak-Oil Spray, a bluffing cloth and a scrub brush.

OPTIMAL DECKING CLEANING AND CARE MADE EASY REGULAR CLEANING

REMOVING GREEN GROWTH

Since the surface of exposed exterior wood faces a lot of strain and wear, it should be maintained regularly. Dirt and tough stains can be removed with water and Osmo Decking Cleaner. Any damage to the oiled surfaces, e.g. through small rocks, should be thoroughly cleaned and re-oiled. This can be partially done really easily – sanding the surface is not required. Therefore, refreshing the complete area is first necessary after months.

Green algae appears on decking because of its location, garden plants or simply too much moisture. This green growth is not only unattractive, but also increases the risk of slips and falls; besides that, it eventually destroys the wood. Osmo Gard Clean removes green growth easily and automatically. Simply apply to the dry area – depending on the amount of green growth – either straight or diluted with maximum 10 parts water. The green growth normally disappears within 24 hours. It is only necessary to rinse with water directly before recoating with a finish, e.g. Osmo wood finishes. Osmo Gard Clean can also be used on surfaces made of plastic, stone or concrete.

INTENSIVE CLEANING AND REFRESHING

2016

Has your wooden decking already developed a natural grey patina through rain and UV radiation? Returning wooden decking to its natural colour tone is quite simple with the especially formulated Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel. Just dampen the entire deck with clear water and apply Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel generously with a scrub brush. After about 20 minutes, clean with a hard brush and rinse with a lot of water. After about 48 hours drying time, the rejuvenated wood should be recoated with a finish, e.g. Osmo Decking-Oil.

MARITIME

If the garden is the second living room, then it should also be just as thoughtfully decorated. With small accessories and a splash of colour, turn a lifeless plot of land into an imaginatively themed garden. To create an overall harmonious look, you should concentrate on one theme and stick with one or two colour tones. As costs and work effort have their limitations, such decorations can be easily renewed. How about maritime decorations for your next garden party?

It is considered one of the most environmentally friendly and fastest renewing raw materials in the world. It is extremely hard and resistant to mould, fungus and insect attacks. This contributes greatly to an even appearance, as well as an invisible fixation with the Clip fixation system. Another advantage: Multi-Deck is slip-resistant in all directions; this also applies for smooth profiles without any grooves or ribbing.

Mark the borehole positions on the floor board 9 mm away from the edge (= the middle of the side wall) and mark the boreholes in the middle of the edges of the side walls. Drill the plug holes. Prepare the walls: mark the middle of the top edge of the gable walls. From the top middle point, mark a 90° angle going down to the sides of the

gable walls on each gable wall. The sides of each 90° angle should be 40 cm long. Cut out the gables. For the entrance, draw a 40 x 40 cm square in the bottom middle. Use a compass to draw a semi-circle with a 40 cm radius on the top of the square. Cut out the entrance. Coat the gable and side walls with Wood Protector and allow to dry. Build the substructure: apply glue to the plug holes, the insert wooden plugs into the floor board, and mount the side walls on the floor board. Now apply glue along the bottom and the edges of the gable walls, place the gable walls flush on the side walls, and hold in position with a clamp. Press for 60 to 90 minutes. Apply End Grain Sealing Wax to all exposed edges. In the meantime, cut the Osmo cove moulding into 4 64-cm-long

pieces each with a 45° angled edge at the top. Treat the cut edges with End Grain Sealing Wax and after drying coat with Country Colour or One Coat Only HSPlus. Allow to dry for 12 hours. Also coat the interior and exterior of the substructure with Country Colour or One Coat Only HSPlus. Allow to dry for 12 hours. Place the cove mouldings flush with the bottom edge of the floor board and fix each of mouldings with finishing nails. Attach the roof: connect the two roof halves with three angle brackets and glue the roof to the substructure. Weatherproof finish: finally apply a second coat of Country Colour to the exterior of the doghouse. For One Coat Only HSPlus, the second coat is not necessary.

ALWAYS THESE DIRTY SHOES… HOW MRS DEAN CAME TO HER HARDWOOD FLOORS. MR AND MRS DEAN ARE INVITED It was really all the Uptons’ fault. They namely insisted that all visitors take their shoes off when they came into the house. Because of the sensitive parquet flooring, they said. Everyone had to do it, even my husband, Henry. “This is ridiculous,” he moaned and from then on he always found new excuses to turn down invitations from “those uptight neighbours of ours”, as he called them. And we had our fair share of fights because all of this.

I LIKE IT BUT HE DOESN’T And then it became high time to renovate our kitchen. I wanted a hardwood floor. Because wood is warm. Because it has such a cosy feeling. And it would match the rest of our décor. But Henry was absolutely against it. “I want to go in and out of the house without having to worry about the floors,” he groaned. “And for one thing, I don’t want to force our guests to wear slippers. How embarrassing!”

WATCH AND LEARN I was about to give up the whole idea. But then, when we were on holiday, Henry remarked how beautiful the hardwood flooring in the hotel lobby

34

was. Still we saw how every day thousands of people marched in and out – with wet shoes and muddy boots and clacking high heels. Henry went to ask the owners for some details. Finally after the third schnapps, the owner shared his secret: “Osmo Polyx®-Oil and no aggressive cleaners.”

HOW MY HUSBAND BECOME AN EXPERT FOR WOOD CARE Whether it was the trust in the owner or the schnapps I’m not quite sure – either way Henry’s opinion changed radically. We had just got back from our holiday when he ordered Osmo solid wood flooring and Osmo Polyx®-Oil. Now as our brand new expert for hardwood flooring, he only allows trusts himself to clean and care for our floors. Good enough for me. And Uptons he now invites to our home with great pleasure, but only since he can insist that they leave their shoes on in the house.

LEAVE YOUR SHOES ON! HARDWOOD FLOORING CAN HANDLE A LOT. HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR HARDWOOD FLOORS PROPERLY WET FOOTPRINTS?

HIGH HEELS?

A few footprints in the corridor can be removed fastest with Osmo Spray-Mop. You do not need mop water. In the Spray-Mop, a cartridge filled with the cleaning solution Spray-Fix is inserted, which is sprayed directly onto the floor. If you would like to clean your floors more thoroughly, there are two things to observe: Only use a damp mop and avoid aggressive all-purpose cleaners. A dash of Osmo Wash and Care in the mop water cleans and replenishes the floor so that the protective oil-wax surface is preserved.

No need to worry about hard soled shoes: even if the protective surface is eventually worn away through high traffic, the whole floor does not have to be sanded in order to renovate it and thus it is not necessary to move all the furniture out of the room. Osmo Polyx®-Oil offers a big advantage in that the flooring can be partially renovated. We recommend: Polyx®-Oil, Roller and Brush Set, FloorXcenter

MUDDY BOOTS? For stubborn dirt and grime or high traffic areas, Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner is a helpful tool. Thanks to the natural waxes and oils found in this care product, the floor is refreshed and shines like new.
