The Tsugua Diaries by Miguel Gomes The 11th Madrid Independent Film Festival – Márgenes will take place from 16-21 November and will play host to more than 30 premieres in the Spanish capital. Standing out among them is the most recent outing by Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes, who will receive the Márgenes Special Award for his impressive lifetime achievement, will introduce The Tsugua Diaries [+], a film he directed alongside Maureen Fazendeiro, and will engage in a chat with the audience. Further to this, the festival is dedicating an online focus to this gutsy creator, which looks back on his early works: visitors to the official website will be able to watch six short films as well as his feature debut, The Face You Deserve.

In addition to The Tsugua Diaries, which is being screened out of competition, Márgenes’ Official Section includes features of the calibre of The Sacred Spirit [+] by Alicante native Chema García Ibarra, which will open the gathering; They Carry Death [+] by Helena Girón and Samuel M Delgado; Wan Xia by Silvia Rey, whose short film of the same name garnered her a Goya nomination; and The Odd-Job Men [+] by Catalonian helmer Neus Ballús, which was world-premiered at Locarno, and has just scooped the Silver Spike and the Audience Award at the Seminci. Also taking part are the movies Azor [+], a co-production between France, Switzerland and Argentina helmed by Italy’s Andreas Fontana; El gran movimiento [+] by Bolivia’s Kiro Russo; and Magaluf Ghost Town [+] by musician and director Miguel Ángel Blanca. Elsewhere, the non-competitive El Presente section brings together some of the most outstanding and relevant names on the international indie film scene. Among the 11 titles included in it are Vortex [+], the latest film by the ever-controversial Gaspar Noé, which triumphed at San Sebastián; After Blue [+] by the exceedingly audacious Bertrand Mandico, which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the most recent Locarno Film Festival; Atlantide [+], a hypnotic documentary by Yuri Ancarani, which was shot in Venice and has just had an airing at Seville; Outside Noise by Ted Fendt; Moon, 66 Questions [+] by Greece’s Jacqueline Lentzou; and the multinational co-production Memoria [+], helmed by Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul, which pocketed (ex aequo) the Jury Prize at Cannes. In addition, Italy’s Alice Rohrwacher will enjoy a twofold involvement in this section, as she will present her short film Four Roads as well as the documentary Futura [+], which she co-directed with Pietro Marcello and Francesco Munzi. Lastly, a new section entitled MRGencia gathers together works by Spanish artists who create hybrids of various visual arts: among the short films being shown here are El juego del despiste by Marcos García, He aquí un cuerpo que cae by Richard Mascherin and Samuel Fuentes, and Ultimate Form 003: YUKO by Fede Coll. Out of competition, and bringing the festival to a close, there will be a screening of Cosmic Chant. Niño de Elche by Marc Sempere-Moya and Leire Apellaniz, which paints a portrait of public figure Francisco Contreras Molina through encounters with his friends and family.
