How your gifts helped in 2013: INTERVENTION AND RESCUE Last year, Ontario SPCA agents across the province investigated 13,274 complaints of animal cruelty, issued more than 1,607 orders, removed over 1,922 animals from life threatening situations and laid more than 19 criminal code and 186 provincial charges.
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS In 2013, we performed over 14,130 surgeries at our spay/neuter clinics to help prevent unwanted pets and overcrowding in animal shelters, and visited schools to educate children about the humane treatment of animals.

From Malnourished to Magnificent: Meet Walter – the Dog with a Blog Walter is updating his blog. Well, he’s getting a little help from his caregiver, Heather and her son, Henry Jr. But life wasn’t always so carefree for the charismatic Weimaraner. Born into a suspected puppy mill in Northern Ontario, Walter is lucky to be alive. When the Ontario SPCA arrived to investigate the breeding operation, Walter was malnourished and had rickets so bad his front legs were bent inward. He was just 3 months old. “They did so much for him at the Ontario SPCA,” says Heather. “They literally saved his life.” Although Walter was recovering well at the shelter, he proved tricky to adopt. “Nobody wanted to adopt him because he was a troublemaker,” explains Heather with a smile. “I thought he just needed love.” rst saw Walter he was so small...he was shaking and looked so scared,” recalls Heather. “When we got him home, I had to baby him.” Fortunately, Walter socialized well and adjusted quickly to his new routine. “He has stability now,” says Heather. “He loves children and dogs and is always up for a run or a game of fetch.”
Walter’s incredible transformation would not have been possible without your support. “The police, investigators, volunteers and everyone who makes a donation to the Ontario SPCA played a role in rescuing Walter,” says Heather. “We are so grateful.” “Walter is pure unconditional love,” says Heather. “He’s one of t for our family.” So what’s up next for the spotlight-loving Weimer? Heather, a freelance writer/editor explains: “Walter is working on some new ideas that will enable him to continue to draw attention to rescue dogs and help the Ontario SPCA. “The Ontario SPCA does a lot of good,” says Alex. “I’m happy to support the animals in any way I can.”

A
lex Hunt has spent his whole life around dogs. But when the time came to choose a new companion animal, he opted for a kitten. “I lost my right foot to diabetes several years ago,” explains Alex. “I knew I couldn’t take proper care of a dog. That’s when I thought of getting a cat.” Alex visited the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre in Newmarket where he met Tobi, a kitten who captured his heart. The two have been enjoying their life together for more than 6 months. “She’s a great, wee thing,” gushes Alex. Tobi’s favourite spot is anywhere Alex is. Alex is reaching out to other animals in need by leaving a bequest to the Ontario SPCA in his Will. “I just felt I wanted to help the animals,” says Alex. “And leaving a bequest in my Will was very easy to do.” When a financial advisor at his bank encouraged him to see his gifts in action now, Alex also became a regular contributor to the Ontario SPCA. The change of each season is his reminder to do whatever he can to help the animals by sending a donation – “It’s easy to remember that way,” he explains.

I started on October 1, 1994 managing a shelter. Six months later I became an agent. To now be chief inspector is beyond my wildest dreams.
cult things I ever had to do was return 40 dogs to a person who was running a suspected puppy mill. We provided care for these dogs and took the case to the Animal Care Review Board. But the owner was allowed to get the dogs back because the owner had met the requirements of the board. I had to return those dogs knowing this person would likely mismanage them again. Sure enough, we had to remove 166 dogs the next time. We laid charges and the person pleaded guilty to a lifetime prohibition on animal ownership. It took about six years but in the end we prevented further neglect and improved the welfare of many more animals.

Classic Vanilla Cupcake Recipe with Butter Cream Frosting Cupcakes:
• our, sifted • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 3/4 cup sugar • 3/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup plus one tbsp butter (cubed and softened at room temp.) • 2 eggs, beaten • 1 teaspoon vanilla Icing: • 2/3 cup butter (cubed and softened at room temperature) • 2 1/4 cup icing sugar, sifted • 1 tbsp milk Cupcake Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°. Grease or line a 12-capacity cupcake pan. our and sugar in a bowl, and make a well in the centre. Add milk, butter, eggs and vanilla. Stir gently to combine. Spoon mixture into prepared pan and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Stand in pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool. Icing Instructions: Place butter in a large mixing bowl and beat for 2 minutes or until y. Gradually add the icing sugar. Gradually add the milk and beat until smooth. You may need more or less than 1 tbsp to reach your perfect consistency.

Happy Tails (and Whiskers Too) When Rodney arrived at the Ontario SPCA he was just 4 months old and ering a broken leg and frost bite on his tail and paws. After his surgery, he needed a quiet home to recuperate. Carol volunteered to help. “It took one night to fall in love with this tiny 4lb kitten,” says Carol. “He had such determination. His leg eventually healed but unfortunately frostbite claimed a piece of his tail. I named him “Rodney” because the metal post from his hip to his knee will remain in his limb forever.”
Ruth met Crash back in 2004 when he was recovering from a devastating injury. He had been thrown from a moving vehicle on the highway and was in rough shape. Ruth agreed to foster Crash while he recovered from surgery. Unfortunately, his leg got infected and it had to be removed. He was just eight weeks old. “After that, he recovered very well,” says Ruth. “Crash and I both decided that we couldn’t be apart...8 years later, he is still my best friend.”

Sadly, our work never ends. This year alone, we shared with you many stories that touched our hearts – we know they touched yours, too. We shared the stories of:

• Jewel, a beautiful Australian shepherd mix, who was found in a ditch at the side of a country road, abandoned – her hind leg badly broken. Jewel’s fracture healed well, but it took more than three months for her to begin to trust again.

Citrus City Tattoo Helps Raise Funds for Orangeville and District Branch On November 2, 2013, Citrus City Tattoo presented their 3rd Annual Dead Things Art Show III. The Silent Auction Gallery and reception featured 30 individual bear and other animal skulls hand crafted by some of North America’s most renowned Tattoo Artists. All the proceeds from the event were donated to support the Ontario SPCA Orangeville and District Branch. Tips to Protect your Pet
W
e are each responsible for ensuring that the animals we share our lives with are kept safe from harm. Thankfully, there is much we can do to minimize the risk. Being a responsible pet owner involves understanding and meeting the needs of your pets, and ensuring that they are not placed in situations that will leave them vulnerable to abuse or unintentional injury. Below are the Ontario SPCA’s top tips to help keep your pets safe.
Keep an eye on the weather. Cats, short-coated dogs and puppies are particularly vulnerable in cold temperatures or inclement weather. Keep cats indoors and protect your dogs from frostbite or hypothermia by taking them outside for short periods during cold weather. Consider slipping your shortcoated dog or puppy into a comfortable dog sweater or coat as an extra layer of warmth. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. As well, when bathing your dog in winter months, ensure he is completely dry before taking him outside. While the Ontario SPCA strongly recommends bringing your dog indoors, dogs that live outside require as a minimum a dry, draft-free doghouse soundly built of weatherproof materials with the door facing away from prevailing winds. It should be elevated and insulated, with a door flap and bedding of straw or wood shavings. Visit ontariospca.ca for information about the ideal doghouse.

Your Gifts make Happy Endings Possible In late fall, eight little Pug and Boston Terriers arrived at PEAC. These little guys required continued medical care, surgery, and behavior modification. The staff gave them names that were fun and hopeful to reflect the next steps in their lives. The Boston Terriers were named with a Boston theme...Red, Sox, Bruins and Pizza. We were also pleasantly surprised with a litter of pug pups. The three Pug came from an irresponsible breeder “Pizza” one of the Boston together, so naturally they were named Larry, Curly, Terriers. and Moe. The little Chihuahua mix was named Harriette, suiting her wild patchy hair coat, and with hopes for her hair growth! Last year was a great year for the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre. One of the many highlights was our annual Bargain Hounds yard and bake sale. We had beautiful weather, a great turnout, lots of fun and raised an impressive $7,400 for animals in need in our communities. Sudbury & District Branch When Victor was surrendered through our investigation department last summer, he could barely see. The cat was suffering from a condition called eye entropia, causing him great discomfort. Thanks to the efforts of the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch, under the supervision of Dr. P.J. Rocheleau Victor After from Espanola Animal Hospital, Victor was successfully operated on. He has since been adopted and is enjoying seeing all life has to offer with his new forever family. Blue’s Journey to a Forever Home It was a cold November day when Blue met his forever family. Found as a stray and rescued by the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre, Blue was waiting patiently for adoption at the Parry Sound Pet Valu. “We had recently experienced the passing of our beloved dog. The house was quiet, lonely, and missing the joys of a family pet,” says Tabatha. “My oldest and Blue in his favourite chair. I went into the Parry Sound Pet Valu to look at the bulletin board in hopes that there would be some puppies posted.” That’s when Blue the cat caught their eye. “I put my hand against the cage and he immediately scooped it closer with his paws and started licking me,” recalls Tabatha. “He stole my heart right then with his affection and his grey silky fur.” After the adoption process was complete, the family prepared to take Blue home. “Blue warmed up to everyone almost immediately,” recalls Tabatha. “He didn’t run and hide, instead he rubbed up against our 11/2 year old daughter, Willow and filled her with the excitement that only a “kee kee” (kitty kitty) can.” Blue has settled (Continued on back) CENTRAL AND NORTHERN ONTARIO

into the routine in his large country home, providing mousing services and never turning down a good belly rub. “There’s no love like the love that an adopted pet will show you,” says Tabatha. “Blue has been an absolute blessing...he is one of the best things to happen to us in a long time. A Christmas Surprise In December, just weeks before Christmas, we were contacted by a family who wanted to surrender a mother dog and her pups. In November, the family had rescued a small hound found wandering around in the woods. Unbeknownst to them, the dog was pregnant at the time. Within weeks of her rescue, she gave birth to 10 puppies. When the family found the situation too much to handle, they contacted the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre. Mom Katie and her 10 pups spent the next few months at the shelter until all were spayed, neutered and ready for adoption. One by one Katie watched her pups all get adopted into loving homes. We are happy to report that Katie recently found a forever family of her own! Thank you for continuing to make happy endings like this possible.

Benny a highlight of the 2013 Kibble & Bids Dinner Auction When Benny arrived at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Branch he had traveled from Quebec tethered to a utility trailer. He had wandered onto a farm and had been living off scraps for nearly a year. He was scared, extremely thin and his white coat was matted and full of dirt. Staff and volunteers patiently worked to gain Benny’s trust so that they could help make him more comfortable. He quickly won the heart of one of our staff and has found a Benny Before permanent home. He now has other adopted siblings of both the cat and dog variety and couldn’t be happier! Benny After Benny joined in the fun at the Kibble & Bids Dinner Auction on November 16, 2013 to help show how your contributions to fundraisers like the auction make such a difference in the lives of countless animals.

5th Annual Around the World in 80 Spays marks another Milestone!
In 2013, this signature event grew to a new location (Brockville Convention Centre), a new weekday (Thursday evening) and a new chef (Chef William). Highlights from the 5th Annual Around the World in 80 Spays Food Tasting and Auction Wiliam & Kelleagh with Marianne included a sell-out of 110 tickets, matched funds of $5,000 from Scotiabank Brockville and, in total, more than $14,400 was raised. The evening started by presenting Lynne Candlish and her team from The Mill restaurant with a small token of appreciation for being the foundation of this event the past four years. We are very pleased that the Brockville Convention Centre and the team Silent auction under Chef William Brockville. will continue the successful tradition! Mark your calendars during the first part of November for the 2014 event.
The Ontario SPCA Lennox & Addington Branch’s first ever Dancing With the Stars event raised $10,500 for animals in need. “The event was a huge success, bringing in thousands more dollars than expected,” said Manager Judy O’Brien. “The event was such a crowd pleaser – we will be doing it annually!” Champs Dave Allen and Keelan Maracle danced a contemporary interpretation to the song “500 Miles,” winning the competition. Special thanks to Miss Shannon and the Dance Xtreme crew – their support, patience, training and fun made this event successful and, in the end, helped homeless animals in our care. Watch for the next DWTS Gala coming in November 2014!
Proceeds from our local events stay with the Leeds & Grenville Branch. These funds are used to assist in our efforts to provide care for the local animals that have been surrendered, neglected or abused. Dancing With the Stars Has All The Right Moves
Guardian Angels at the Lennox & Addington Branch Thanks to Frieda Youell, Doris Decorte and Annette Zomoyski the Lennox and Addington Branch is renovated and the animals are enjoying enrichment activities! This year, through their generosity, the shelter has been painted top to bottom, new electrical put in place, and a new wall built in dog adoption. The cats are crazy over their new play room!
