A national faith-based movie production company now has a presence in Valrico. JCFilms Studios has launched its most recent production club, JCFilms Studios Tampa. And immediately after forming, the club put its first full-length feature film into production. Filming for seven days in April, the movie was shot on location in Valrico, Lithia, Plant City, Riverview, Brandon and Tampa. The film, called Losing to Win, follows four candidates through a reality show challenge and shares their story of regaining faith, building relationships and finding support through friends. In March, JCFilms Studios Tampa put out a casting call for a faith-based movie featuring Dean Cain, best known for playing Superman in the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman series, who has been a long-standing supporter of JCFilms. Cain was in town in May for the finale of the filming at 5th Gear Fitness in Valrico. The owners, Jessica Adams and Gretchen Trasorras, are also the directors of the Tampa Club and have been involved in professional acting and training for years. “I had the opportunity to be on set

and be a principal character in two JCFilms productions,” explained Adams, “and we wanted to bring a production club to the Tampa area because we think we can produce really great movies right there in the area.” The cast and crew filmed for a total of nine days and the movie is now in post-production. Once released, it is planned to be submitted to the streaming services and be available live through a new family-friendly, faithbased streaming app, JCFilms Plus, coming soon. To date, JCFilms has produced over 50 faith and family films. Jason Campbell, president of JCFilms Studios, explained, “Each of these Production Clubs are being created to offer both education and opportunity for people of faith to get involved in Christian films. Each lo-
cation is designed as a hub for Christian movie making, from script writing to acting; the goal of these clubs is to tell Christ-centered redemptive stories through film by creating compelling, entertaining and wholesome content.” In addition, Campbell hopes JCFilms Plus will become the premier platform for the growing number of independent Christian filmmakers. “As more faith films are being produced, it’s time we have our own digital platform,” Campbell said. JCFilms Plus is also going to serve as the distribution platform for the ministry’s production clubs. These nationwide film clubs will produce over 20 films in the next year. JCFilms Plus has already been endorsed by top Christian leaders in film, music and church leadership. The video-on-demand platform is set to launch in June. For more information on the clubs, upcoming productions and the new streaming service, visit the website at www.jcfilms.org.

NATIVITY CELEBRATION OF HOLY WEEK By Lily Belcher
Each year, bilingual services during Holy Week prepare Nativity Catholic Church’s congregation for the joyful celebration of Easter in a solemn expression of faith leading up to the death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, when Nativity’s congregation are given palms as the priest enters from the back of the church to the alter. On Tuesday of the week before Easter, Nativity hosted the Chrism Mass. During the Mass, Bishop Parkes and priests around the dioceses gather in the cathedral to bless the three oils that will be used during the sacraments over the next liturgical year and renew their vows they have made as priests. On Holy Thursday, Nativity hosts the first of three Masses, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, that form the Easter Triduum. The Mass celebrated the Last Supper, and the presiding priests washed the feet of the members of the congregation, mimicking the symbolic cleansing of sins described in the Gospels. Following the washing of feet, the congregation was invited to pray and reflect in Nativity’s garden, as Jesus did in the garden of Gethsemane. The Mass ended without a conclusion and blessing as churchgoers were encouraged to return the following two days to continue the three-day-long
service. “I think Holy Thursday is one of the most inspiring, the washing of the feet in particular,” said Father Brad Reed, who is acting as director of the liturgy this year. The next Mass on the Friday of the Passion of the Lord retold the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and allowed Nativity’s parish to reflect before the cross. Father Reed described the moving moment as the congregation came up to the cross bearing their own physical and emotional burdens. Holy Week concluded on the Saturday before Easter with the 8 p.m. Easter Vigil in the Holy Night. The longer service began outside around a campfire built by Nativity’s Boy Scout troop. The procession brought the congregation into the dark church, illuminated by candles held by the congregation that were lit in the fire. There were seven passages read from the Old Testament that foreshadowed the Resurrection, and then the lights were turned on, symbolizing the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead. “This week kind of commemorates that pattern of our life and that mystery of the Lord, in which we are all invited to participate,” said Father Reed. Grace Notes Yoke Of Rest By Debora Coty
I’ve been thinking about yokes lately. Weird, huh? A yoke is a wooden crosspiece that’s fastened over the necks of two work animals and attached to the load they’re pulling. The idea is that it’s much easier for two to pull a heavy load than one alone. In fact, the word ‘yoke’ comes from an ancient Greek root word that means ‘unite.’ We’re readily acquainted with the New Testament passage where Jesus himself invites us to “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for our souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV). Now, I’ve always found this invitation a bit confusing. To my (admittedly limited) knowledge, yokes are not worn to rest. They’re worn for work—hard, grueling work at that. If you’re already weary and burdened, why on earth would you plunk a big wooden thing the size of a kitchen table on your shoulders? How could it possibly produce rest when you’re struggling to support this monstrous additional weight? (Not unlike the squashed, heavy weariness many of us have experienced during the past two pandemic years,
right?) Then I came across the story in 1 Kings 12:1-15, where King David’s self-centered grandson, Rehoboam, is crowned king and is asked by his subjects to lighten the “heavy yoke” of harsh labor his father (Solomon) had inflicted on them. (In case you’re wondering, rotten Rehoboam refused and made their burden even heavier because they dared ask for mercy.) So, can a heavy yoke actually be lightened? A little research revealed that many yokes can indeed be made lighter when a faithful, hard-toiling team has earned some rest. The yoke is not completely removed, for there’s more work to be done later, but in order to reduce pressure, the yoke is lifted or ‘made easy’ so the two can rest comfortably together. I love this analogy. Probably because during the past couple of difficult years, there have been many times when I’ve felt like I’m struggling to pull that ridiculously heavy load all by myself. But, when I stop long enough to allow myself to be yoked with the source of all strength, Jesus, He carries the lion’s share of the burden and knows all the best places to rest my soul and body. Really rest. So, I leave that place infused with His presence—refueled, refreshed and renewed. My friend, if you’re limping along all by yourself, try yoking yourself to Jesus for some real rest. His yoke is truly easy, and His burden is light.

THE BIBLE’S MOST FAMOUS FRIENDSHIPS
ABRAHAM AND LOT
The Bible is full of fascinating stories about human relationships, including friendships. In fact, stories of friendships are demonstrated throughout the Old and New Testaments. God wants us to have relationships—not just of the marital and familial kind, but deep and abiding friendships as well. True friendship provides us with support, love and enjoyment and is nothing short of a gift from God. The friendship between Abraham and Lot reminds us of loyalty and going above and beyond for friends. Abraham and Lot had experienced difficult times together. Lot’s father had died years ago, so he and joined his uncle, Abraham, and it appears that Abraham adopted Lot. They traveled together and worshiped together. Abraham and Lot were like father and son and shared a bond of blood, friendship and love. They had seen God’s blessings through their many experiences together, both good and bad. They were living near Egypt, and both had acquired large herds of cattle and sheep. Abraham told Lot that it was time for them to find land and invited Lot to come with their families to an area not too far from Sodom and Gomorrah. During this time, the two men decided to separate because they both had too many people, servants and animals to live together. Abraham loved Lot and allowed him first pick of land. Lot picked the most prosperous

piece of property, and unfortunately it was during this time that Abraham and Lot had grown apart. Years later, a rebellion took place throughout the land that proved to be disastrous for Lot’s family. Not only were the cities being looted, but these armies were taking people captive, including Lot and Lot’s family. There is no hesitation in Abraham’s response to his finding out Lot had been taken captive. Abraham and Lot were family, and even though they had differences, Lot was like a son to Abraham. Scripture tells us in Genesis 14:14-16: “When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.” Abraham had travelled more than 175 miles in pursuit of Lot. After defeating the armies, Abraham rescued Lot and all of Lot’s family and possessions, and the two men were finally reunited. Abraham’s small army had conquered a rather large army that had defeated many cities east of the Jordan River as well as Sodom and Gomorrah. They had invaded and land and conquered cities, yet they met their match with Abraham and his personal army in pursuit of Lot. Indeed, Abraham demonstrated faithfulness to Lot much like God’s faithfulness to his children.

Pastor’s Corner Jomo Cousins, PhD
DIVINE DIVORCES By Pastor Jomo Cousins, PhD
Genesis 13:8-9 (AMP): 8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife and disagreement between you and me, nor between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, because we are relatives. 9 Is not the entire land before you? Please separate [yourself] from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right, then I will go to the left.” Divine divorces are God-ordained separations that happen when purpose has been fulfilled. In other words, God removes people from our lives once they have served their purpose. We will not always understand why, but we must trust God’s plan. Not everyone is going to finish
the race with us. Some people in life are just a bridge to get us to a certain place. Once we arrive, God, in His sovereignty and providence, will orchestrate a separation. I have learned that God consistently replaces them with better, just like He did when He separated Abram from Lot. His separation seemed to be a loss for Abram, but God turned it into a major gain. Casualties are a part of the journey. Trust God that whatever we need will be there when we need it and, when necessary, be ready to apply the gift of goodbye. Prayer: Father God, thank You for removing those who are not a part of Your plan for my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Except from: 60 Prayers in 60 Seconds, Page 29.

Christian Wishes For Mother’s Day
By Kelly Wise Valdes
As we enter into May, it’s time to make plans to show your mom how much she means to you on Mother’s Day. Certainly, this is a special day in the lives of so many of us, and the Bible has much to say about the role and qualities of mothers and their importance in the lives of families. One of my favorite mom verses in the Bible is from Deuteronomy 6:6–7: “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” I thought I would share below some of the many books out there for Christian moms, and I pray that they can encourage you to hold onto your faith in this journey of motherhood. May God bless our homes, churches and nations with mothers whose hearts are a blessing to their families. Have a happy and blessed Mother’s Day.

dia-saturated, perfection-obsessed world. It doesn’t mean giving up all technology forever, and it doesn’t mean forgoing our jobs and responsibilities. What it does mean is seizing the little moments to engage in meaningful interactions. It means giving the gift of our undivided attention, leaving the laundry until later to dance with our kids in the rain and living a present, authentic and intentional life despite a world full of distractions.
In this book, the author invites you to grow out of the ‘mess’ of motherhood and into a place where you can grow as a better, happier mom. Readers are encouraged to embrace the refining work of the Holy Spirit to help you and your family not just survive but thrive through the parenting years. The way to becoming a better mom starts not with what we are doing but with who God is inviting us to become.
If you’re a mom who is constantly giving, it’s time for you to stop believing the lie that more is needed from you and start believing the truth that more is available for you. This book will help women recognize what it looks like to be holy and whole in the midst of their daily lives and come alive by taking the steps to bring their dreams into fruition.
With the honesty of a close friend, the hilarity of a late-night comic and the humility of a mom up to her eyeballs in diapers and dishes, this book invites us on a journey to draw closer to God amid the joyful, mundane, exhausting days of young parenthood. Probing ancient Christian practices for renewal, this inspiring book chronicles one mom’s quest to discover an answer to her most pressing question: Can God use the crucible of parenthood to grow us in virtue?

THE ALEXSTRONG FOUNDATION SUPPORTS PLANT CITY BOY BATTLING LEUKEMIA
By Lily Belcher
Sumner’s family started the Alexstrong Foundation to support other families after her son passed away from cancer. Cooper Wingate (above), is battling pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The Alexstrong Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports families with children facing life-threatening illnesses, is hosting the sixth annual Benefit Bass Tournament. This year’s tournament on Saturday, May 7, will help 3-year-old Cooper Wingate, who was diagnosed with pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia last year. The Bass Tournament will take place out of Grape Hammock Fish Camp at Lake Kissimmee where Alexstrong supporters and fishermen will catch up to six bass and participate in the weigh-in at 2 p.m. After the weigh-in, competitors and guests will have the option of entering a raffle for baskets that will be put together by Alexstrong Founder Lori Sumner. Many of the basket items are fishing and hunting themed, but Sumner raffles off other items, like purses, for supporters that may not be as interested in the tournament. “Even if you are not fishing the tournament, a lot of people will come around noon and hang out and buy raffle tickets,” said Sumner. “Most of our donations really just come from the community … people donate money, and we give it to [the family].” The Alexstrong Benefit Bass Tournament
is accepting individual and company sponsorships, and the money donated will go to purchasing raffle items and supporting Cooper’s family during his treatment. The Alexstrong Foundation’s fishing tournament first took place in 2017. Larry Walls, Sumner’s brother-in-law, hosted the first tournament to support Sumner’s family as her son, Alex, battled a brain tumor. Alex passed away shortly after his 14th birthday, but Sumner wanted to create a foundation to help families fighting similar battles and to honor her son. “It means that Alex gets to live on; people are saying his name and wearing shirts in his memory and sharing his story. He was one of a kind, straight A student, amazing big brother, so generous and respectful, just an all-around amazing kid,” said Sumner. For the fishing tournament, entry fee is $60 per boat and a big bass pot is $10 per boat. A $5 ramp fee will need to be paid at Grape Hammock’s office. For more on the tournament, visit their Facebook page or contact Larry Walls at 813-731-3112. To make a donation, contact Sumner at 813-493-2557. Visit their Facebook page @alexstrongfoundationinc.

Steve King, MOW Tampa executive director, is very excited about the new menus. “Our executive chef has really created some great recipes, seasoning them with fresh ingredients, such as garlic and herbs, to enhance flavor while minimizing sodium,” said King. “Our plan is to rotate all the menus every 4-5 months to keep things seasonal.” The new diabetic menu is carbohydrate monitored. The renal menu has lower sodium, potassium and phosphorus levels and offers a quality source of protein with each meal. All the meals are offered in regular, chopped or pureed form to meet the changing needs of Tampa’s homebound and senior neighbors. When recipients were recently surveyed, the diabetic and renal menus were the most requested additions
to the current heart-healthy meals. MOW Tampa’s home-delivered meal program provides hot, nutritious meals to seniors (ages 62 and over) as well as disabled and homebound individuals who have difficulty shopping for food or preparing meals. Meals provide recipients with improved diet, health and wellbeing. A volunteer driver delivers a hot meal Monday to Friday. Frozen meals for the weekend are delivered on Friday. For many of the neighbors served, a visit from a volunteer is the only personal contact they will have that day. This allows for a ‘safety’ check in, which brings comfort and security for them and for their families. MOW Tampa serves from the county lines to the north and west, I-75 to the east, including Riverview and Gibsonton. MOW Tampa is completely privately funded and is not a government agency. The cost of meal service is determined based on the individual’s circumstances. The full cost of a meal is $5.50. No one is turned away due to financial reasons. If interested in receiving meals or to learn more about MOW Tampa, please call the office at 813-238-8410 or visit www. mowtampa.org.

The Holy House Of Loreto – Loreto, Italy With May being the month of celebrating our mothers, it would be fitting to recognize the most holy of mothers: the mother of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary. There are multitudes of churches, cathedrals and holy sites around the world honoring the Virgin Mary, but one of the most visited sites in the world is the Holy House of Loreto. This location is considered a Marian shrine, which is a site marking an apparition or other miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary. People all over the world have journeyed to the Holy House of Loreto since the 14th century to stand inside the walls where reportedly the Virgin Mary was born, raised and greeted by the angel Gabriel. The story told over the years is that angels carried the Holy House from Palestine to Italy. While there many doubt the legend’s authenticity, historic documents may have vindicated this—with an ironic twist. The Holy House reportedly arrived in Loreto, Italy on December 10, 1294 from the Holy Land as the Crusaders were driven out of Palestine. In 1900, documents were discovered in the Vatican Archives, stating that in the 13th century, a wealthy Byzantine family rescued “materials” of “Our Lady’s House” from Muslim invaders and then had them transported to Italy. This Byzantine family was named Angeli, which means ‘angels’
in Greek and Latin. A coin minted by a member of the Angeli family was also found in the foundation of the house in Loreto. In Italy, coins were often inserted into a building’s foundation to indicate who was responsible for its construction. Excavations in both Nazareth and Loreto found similar building materials at both sites—Palestine and Loreto. The stones that make up the lower walls of the Holy House in Loreto appear to have been finished with a technique particular in Palestine. At both locations, there are almost identical inscriptions in Greek and Hebrew letters that read, “O Jesus Christ, Son of God.” The Holy House is encased in marble in the center of the basilica and is 31 feet long and 13 feet wide. Inside the Holy House is the famous statue of the Black Madonna. Over the centuries, countless pilgrims have visited Loreto, including many saints. There have also been many miracles and conversions. The Holy House of Loreto, unlike many other shrines, is under the direct authority and protection of the pope. To view a documentary on the Holy House, visit YouTube and search for ‘The Mystery of the Holy House.’
Live Like You Mean It ... Is Anxiety A Sin?
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33). Recently, I have been anxious more than usual. It is a disquieting realization given my track record as a markedly mellow human being. There is ample reason to account for this, but there is even more reason to live without anxiety. I know I have been dealing with an unreasonable amount of stress, change and uncertainty from Rebekah’s retirement to my parents’ growing needs and more. However, given the way I write
about faith, it would be easy to conclude my current distress amounts to a lack of faith. Surely, if all I write is true, this level of distress must be contrary to an active Christian life? Did not Jesus himself— and, later, Paul—teach that worry is a sin? “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,” (Matthew 6:25). However, Jesus teaches that we are not to give up, not to be defeated nor incapacitated by anxiety. We are not to step away from the truth that “in all these things we are more than conquer-
ors through him who loves us,” (Romans 8:37). I am learning that the invitation of Jesus is to allow God’s love and presence to be our central truth. I need not be embarrassed by anxiety, but instead I need to allow Jesus to minister peace: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you,” (1 Peter 5:7). What I find, even in the middle of this pit of my stomach’s emotional turmoil, is the same testimony Paul gave, that “[God’s] grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness,” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Kentucky Church Bake Sale Raises $145,000 To Help Displaced Ukrainians
Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler: I Golf Because “I’m Trying to Glorify God”
Family Camp In Theaters Nationwide In May
Tickets are now on sale for the new faith-based comedy Family Camp. Featuring Tommy Woodard and Eddie James of The Skit Guys, Family Camp will release in cinemas nationwide on Friday, May 13. When their pastor (Mark Christopher Lawrence) encourages the congregation to sign up for a week away at family camp, Grace (Leigh-Allyn Baker) believes she’s found the perfect cure for her imperfect clan—even if they’d all rather be anywhere but at rustic Camp Katokwah. Family Camp is a laugh-outloud comedy that the whole family can enjoy. Follow Family Camp on Facebook @FamilyCampMovie, Twitter @FamilyCampMovie, Instagram @ FamilyCampMovie2022 and online at
The 2022 Masters champion is a 25-year-old Texan who says he golfs to “glorify God” and who credits prayer for giving him peace on an anxious weekend. Scottie Scheffler won his first Masters Tournament on Sunday with a dominant final round, ending the fourday event at 10 under par. It was his first major championship but his fourth overall in less than two months. In March, he became the world’s No. 1 golfer in the World Golf Rankings at a record pace with a mere 42 days passing from his first victory to being ranked in the top spot. The previous record, held at the time by Tiger Woods, was 252 days. When asked during a Sunday news conference what drives him, Scheffler pointed to his faith. “The reason why I play golf is because I’m trying to glorify God and all that He’s done in my life,” Scheffler told media members. “And so for me, my identity isn’t a golf score.” Go to @scottie.scheffler on Instagram to learn more.

Maverick City Makes Grammy History As 1st Christian Group Performer In 20 Years: “THANK YOU JESUS!”
Maverick City Music made history on Sunday night by winning its first Grammy and also becoming the first Christian or gospel group in 20 years to perform live on the broadcast. The group won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for Old Church Basement, a live LP recorded with Elevation Worship. Maverick City Music’s performance during the CBS broadcast attracted plenty of new fans. A news release called it the “first time in over 20 years that a gospel or Christian artist has been televised at the ceremony.” The last such performance was in 2002. “THANK YOU JESUS!” the group’s Twitter account said after the Grammy win. “Everything we do belongs to God! We’re so honored to be a part of what He is doing in the Kingdom!” Plenty of fans on social media enjoyed the performance even if it was—as some
A Ukrainian congregation raised nearly $145,000 at a bake sale in April to aid those displaced by the war in Ukraine. The bake sale took place at the Ukrainian Pentecostal Church of Nicholasville, Kentucky. Attendees were given lunch and access to more than 100 different donated baked goods that were for sale. The funds raised from the sales will be used to help displaced people in Ukraine. More than 10 million people have fled the besieged country since March. Victor Selepina, who organized the bake sale, said that most of the church’s members are from Ukraine or have family members living there. Selepina, who was shocked at the amount raised, shared that he and the church “never anticipated to have so many people come out and to raise that amount of money.” The funds will be given to churches in Ukraine with ties to Nicholasville. The churches will then use the money to buy food and supplies for those displaced by the war. Other churches across the U.S. have launched similar efforts to aid displaced Ukrainians. LIFELIKE SCULPTURES GRACE THE STREETS OF DOWNTOWN PLANT CITY
Page 19
CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE RETURNS WITH SIX GREAT SHOWS Staff Report
By Kathy L. Collins
You can take a stroll about downtown Plant City, and as you do, you will come across delightful, lifelike sculptures, such as Ambassador of the Streets at the east end of McCall Park and Latte? in Unity Park on Collins St. The sculptures were brought to Plant City courtesy of the Arts Council of Plant City.
The Arts Council of Plant City has once again brought delightful lifesize sculptures to Plant City’s historic downtown. The sculptures were created by artist J. Seward Johnson. The sculptures are displayed throughout the downtown area. Johnson creates trompe l’oeil painted bronze statues which are castings of live people depicting them engaged in everyday tasks. There are seven statues on display. Bake Sale is located at on Palmer St. at the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum. Body Music is located at the intersection of Palmer St. and E. Reynolds St. Ambassador of the Streets is located on the east end of McCall Park. Keep Life in Balance is located in McCall Park on Collins St. Relish, Too? is located at Roots Cellar on Collins St. Latte? is located in Unity Park on Collins St. Finally, Captured is located at Village Green Park on Evers St. Taking a stroll through downtown locating the statues is a fun way to spend some time outside and get to see both the delightful downtown and the beautifully created statues. They are so life-
like that you may need to take a double take to make sure you are looking at a statue and not a live person. Marsha Passmore, president of the Arts Council of Plant City, said, “The eight sculptures were handpicked. They are special because this set has never been displayed before in Plant City.” Passmore added, “This is the eighth year that the Arts Council of Plant City has hosted the Seward Johnson sculptures as an open-air outside exhibit.” In addition to bringing the Johnson sculptures to Plant City, the Arts Council of Plant City offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors, sponsors the PTSA Reflections Art Exhibit and supports local nonprofits. The mission of the Arts Council of Plant City is to bring arts to the Plant City community, promote education in the arts and develop artists and arts programs. The Arts Council of Plant City is funded by membership fees and fundraisers, such as its annual Chili Fest. For info, visit www.plantcityarts.com.

THE LONELINESS EPIDEMIC
By Bob Zoellner
Something worse than COVID-19 has been stalking us, but it’s not caught from other people. Others are actually the cure. Loneliness. The last two years of masking, social distancing and isolation has proved to us that we were made for relationships. A lack of connecting with others is killing us. “Loneliness is deadlier than obesity and should be considered a public health risk,” according to an August 17, 2017 New York Post piece. “Those with bad social connections have a 50 percent increased risk of early death compared to those with good social connections, a review of studies on loneliness suggests.” Loneliness and isolation not only contribute to poor physical health but also take their toll on our mental health too. According to the Centers for Disease Control, loneliness is the feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact, while social isolation is a lack of social connections. In addition to myriad physical problems, loneliness also increases depression, anxiety and suicide (see https:// www.cdc.gov/aging/publications/features/ lonely-older-adults.html). We were not created to do life by ourselves. In the creation account in Genesis,
the Lord said, “it is not good that man should be alone.” From the beginning, man needed relationships. Too often, though, we substitute things for people, spending too much time in the accumulation of stuff at the expense of our relationships, especially with God. But if that relationship isn’t where it needs to be, then our other human connections will suffer, to our detriment. Jesus was asked by the religious leaders of the day what the greatest commandment in the law was. He replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments,” (Matthew 22:37-40, NIV). We can only have real and lasting relationships if we are reconciled to God, through Christ, first, then true fellowship can happen. Does that mean we will never experience loneliness again? Absolutely not, but we must make the effort, for ourselves and others, to not stay there when those periods of loneliness come. Press in to the Lord, find refreshing there first. Healthy relationships with others flow from that. We also gain the impetus to seek out those who need friendship and fellowship in their lives too. And not only will they experience the joy of human connection, but they will also be exposed to the ultimate giver of life, Jesus. We will never ‘program’ away people’s loneliness, only real relationships will do that. And the believer in Christ knows the giver of real relationships.
