The Maffeis, Philadelphia natives, have been interested in opening a Philly Pretzel Factory franchise for several years and after moving to the Tampa area in 2016 and seeing that there were no franchises in the area, they decided it was the perfect opportunity. “We came in contact with a lot of people from the north who knew about the pretzels and were excited about the idea of having them available in the area. The pretzels are homemade from scratch, hand-twisted and fresh baked

Riverview Resident And Purple Heart Recipient Celebrates 75th Birthday Gordon Beadle, a resident of Riverview, is celebrating his 75th birthday this month. When he was a young Marine fighting in Vietnam in 1965, there were more than a few occasions he wondered if he might see another birthday as a combat engineer who cleared active mine fields for a living. Beadle always wanted to be a Marine. Born April 23, 1943 in Philadelphia, he knew military service was a calling at a young age. With the approval of his father, he enlisted early at the age of 17 in 1960. After finishing boot camp at Paris Island, SC, he joined C Company, 8th Engineers Support Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was trained as combat demolition and explosive expert. He bravely cleared mine fields and neutralized explosives for fellow infantrymen. He became so good at it that he eventually trained troops in the craft of mine warfare. Corporal Beadle fought in jungle warfare in Japan while stationed in Okinawa and eventually was stationed at Camp Pendleton in CA where led a team of eight men as an combat engineers in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines. His job was finding and clearing explosives and demolitions. In July of 1965, his country decided to put Sergeant Beadle’s expertise to use in the jungles of Vietnam. He did what he was trained to do; clear mine fields of explosives so his fellow servicemen would have safe passage to finish the mission. Three months after he landed, Beadle was wounded by a land mine on November 11, 1965 in Chu Lai, Vietnam. The injuries to Beadle’s legs were severe. He lost one of his legs and badly injured the other. Doctors and

medics were thankfully able to save the injured leg. After being stabilized, he was flown back home to the Naval hospital in Philadelphia to be closer to family. Sergeant Beadle was awarded the Purple Heart while still recovering from his injuries in Vietnam. Being a Marine was a family affair. Beadle’s two other brothers also joined the Marines and fought in Vietnam as well as other family members. His younger brothers, Robert and Harry Beadle enlisted at the first chance they could to join him. His youngest brother, Harry Beadle, was killed in action in 1968 at the tender age 19. Gordon Beadle has his brother’s Purple Heart medal, something he cherishes. Sergeant Gordon Beadle, USMC had planned to make being a Marine a lifetime career. He medically retired with full benefits after his injury. After hours and hours of therapy and hard work, he was able to walk with a prosthetic leg. He started a new life, went to college and started a successful business. But all would be for nothing if he hadn’t met the love of his life on a blind date. Celebrating her 18th birthday, Susan was picked up at her house by a handsome stranger in a suit and tie, carrying a wrapped birthday present. It was necklace that Gordon had picked out as nice gesture to his mysterious date. He’s a Marine and gentleman. They were married June 13, 1970 and have three children and five grandchildren. There will be four new stores opening in the coming months, in addition to the recently opened Leaven Brewery which celebrated its grand opening with a Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting last week. Leaven Brewery, owned by Apollo Beach residents KJ and Jillian Lynch, is now open Fridays and Saturdays, 3-10 p.m. The brewery offers 12 beers on tap that include their flagship beers, plus seasonal offerings and a guest tap featuring beers from other Florida breweries. Instruments Of Change Music Program At Clair-Mel Receives Grant Check By Michelle Caceres
Clair-Mel Elementary school band members were on hand as Bryon Holz presented Glen Schubert of Instruments of Change a grant check for $2,500.
Instruments of Change executive director and founder Glen Schubert accepted a $2,500 grant in March from Million Dollar Round Table Foundation (MDRT), the charitable arm of Million Dollar Round Table, an association of financial professionals. The check was presented to Schubert at a ceremony at Clair-Mel Elementary by financial advisor Bryon Holz of Bryon Holz & Associates, a MDRT member who completed the application for the grant. “I know the tremendous power that music can have in a person’s life,” said Holz. Instruments of Change is a non-profit program that institutes band programs at Title-1 elementary schools and offers a pathway for fifth grade students to earn a musical instrument of their very own. Clair-Mel Elementary was the first school to institute the program in 2009, but it is now offered at three other elementary schools in the area. Upon successful completion of the program and proof of enrollment in a middle school band, students are able to select an instrument of their choice. “These instruments aren’t just a free
giveaway,” said Schubert. “They’ve earned them.” This year more than 100 instruments have been awarded worth a retail cost of approximately $100,000. Clair-Mel Elementary fifth-grade student Juan Cisneros hopes that he will soon earn one of the coveted instruments. Cisneros is following in the footsteps of his two older sisters and older brother, who are all graduates of the program and earned instruments from the charity. All three of his siblings play clarinet in their schools’ bands, two at Dowdell Middle and one at Bloomingdale High. He is learning to play the clarinet and practices with his siblings at home. “I like to play music,” he said. “It is so calming.” Music teacher Lori Valdez, who was at the school in 2009 when the program first started, said it has had a positive impact in the lives of so many students. “We have former program graduates who are now graduating high school and are still playing their instruments,” she said. The group is working with Hillsborough County Communications and Digital Media to produce Neighborhood Spotlight, an occasional series which will tell the stories of specific communities throughout the area. The presentations will be supplemented with photographs, a map and sometimes video to give each neighborhood a chance to shine. High Schools Host Relay For Life Events To Support ACS Efforts Riverview and Lennard high schools are inviting community members to join them fighting cancer this month at their annual Relay For Life events. On Friday, April 20 at 6 p.m., students and community members will join teams at Earl Lennard High School to walk, camp overnight and participate in other activities to raise funds for the American Cancer Society (A.C.S.), while the relay at Riverview High School, with similar events, will take place on Saturday, April 21. “Relay For Life is A.C.S.’s largest fundraising movement,” said Samantha Schneider, A.C.S. Community Development Manager. Thirty-five teams, with between five and 25 members, are signed up to participate in the Lennard event and 50 teams in the Riverview event, with participants ranging from children to 75 year olds. The fundraising goal for the Lennard relay is $65,000, as participants raised $63,000 last year, and the goal for the Riverview event, where relayers raised $115,000 last year, is $100,000. “Relay For Life provides an outlet for individuals touched by cancer to feel that they are not alone, whether the disease has affected them or a loved one,” said Schneider. “It really encompasses the community and provides a tangible way to make a difference while having fun.” The events are not traditional relays, although teams are asked to have one participant walking the track at all times, even through the night. ing, there are many events for participants to chose from to keep busy and raise important funds. “The fact that participants walk throughout the night makes us a unique event that resembles the fact that cancer never sleeps and neither do we at out 12,
15 or 18 hour events,” said Schneider. Each event has a theme which participants use for costumes, fundraising games and items, decorations for their camp sites and themed laps during the event. Both the Riverview and SouthShore relays are using Disney’s Wish Upon a Cure as their theme this year. “All of the events will have a Survivor
Lap and a Caregiver Lap which allows these individuals a chance to be recognized and celebrated,” said Schneider, who added that a complimentary lunch or dinner is provided for cancer survivors and their families at the events. One highlight of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony that typically starts at 9 p.m. and showcases luminaria bags lit in memory or in honor of loved ones. “It is a very moving ceremony where we turn the stadium lights off and hold a silent lap,” said Schneider. “The luminary bags can be purchased online or the day of the event for a donation.” Each event will also have a variety of food sold by the teams, including Chickfil-A, walking tacos, baked goods, chili and breakfast foods. The teams also host games, raffle baskets, silent auctions and obstacle courses. All money raised at the event goes to ACS’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer. The SouthShore event will take place Earl Lennard High School, located at 2341 Shell Point Rd. in Ruskin, from 3 p.m. Friday, April 20 until 6 a.m., April 21. Riverview’s event will take place on the school’s track, located at 11311 Boyette Rd., from 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 until 6 a.m. the next morning. Residents are encouraged to sign up to participate in either event at www.relayforlife.org, but the community is also encouraged to come out to support the fundraisers at the events, even if they are not part of a team. Tampa YMCA Wins Treadmill Tuesday Tie-Breaker
The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA announced its win in the Treadmill Tuesday Tie-Breaker, a third annual competition with the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast. In total, 1,979 Tampa Bay residents completed 4,185.95 miles during the 12-hour event, surpassing the First Coast by about 1,385.15 miles. For the First Coast, 1,368 residents logged 2,800.80 miles. Together, the Tampa YMCA and First Coast YMCA leveraged a friendly competition to inspire community members to become more physically active and adopt healthier lifestyles. “The remarkable turnout of the Treadmill Tuesday Tie-Breaker has once again demonstrated the importance of community involvement in improving Florida’s health and wellbeing,” said Tampa YMCA President & CEO Matt Mitchell. “While this year’s tie-breaker ended in our favor, both Y associations remain committed to strengthening the health of our communities.” In addition to participating at their
neighborhood Y, community members were able to join the competition from other locations via social media. Of the 4,185.95 total Tampa Bay participants, 26 joined by uploading a post-workout photo of treadmill dashboard displaying the total distance on social media. Hawthorne Health & Rehabilitation Center hosts a monthly support group for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and caregivers on the third Thursday of every month. A variety of speakers will provide information on topics relating to swallowing, balance, walking, speaking, mobility, exercise, self-care, cognition, and memory, all of which can be impacted by Parkinson’s Disease. Hawthorne Health & Rehabilitation Center, located at 851 W. St. Anne’s Third Annual Golf Tournament
Saint Anne Catholic Church is building its 2018 Community Outreach Funds with its Third Annual Golf Tournament. A ‘Best Ball Golf Tournament’ will be held Saturday, April 21 at Apollo Beach Golf Course, 801 Golf and Sea Blvd. in Apollo Beach. Registration opens 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. ‘Shotgun Start.’ The entrance fee is $75 per player, or $300 for each foursome. This fee includes prizes for Hole-in-One, Greatest Putt, Longest Drive, Most Accurate Drive, Closest to the Pin (all Par 3s) and a ‘Fun’ Awards Luncheon with great food and prizes following the Tournament. The luncheon will be hosted at the Apollo Beach Golf Club. There will be a Hole in One contest with the Grand Prize of $10,000. Tournament registration forms are available at Saint Anne Parish Office Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.–Noon. Forms are also available at Apollo Beach Golf Course Pro Shop. All proceeds benefit Saint Anne
Catholic Church Community Outreach programs, including the weekly Food Pantry, Education Scholarships, St. Vincent DePaul, and Catholic Charities’ Mobile Medical Bus.

Support and fellowship group starting soon at Northside Baptist Church in Ruskin. Healing is possible for adult children
of alcoholic parents and dysfunctional families based on the ACA Handbook. This meeting book contains the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, sponsorship, Inner Child and re-parenting. Meeting discussions offer hope for recovery from the effects of growing up in a dysfunctional family, where alcohol or drugs may or may not have been present. While ACA is similar to other Twelve Step programs, our emphasis is on the family system and Inner Child or True Self. Taize Prayer Service Hosted By Saint Anne Catholic Church
As part of its Lenten devotions, Saint Anne Parish hosted a Taizé Prayer Service on February 27. It was an evening filled with reverence, reflection, and adoration. The highlight of the altar was the most beautiful display of the exposed Blessed Sacrament with a light that shined on it, which portrayed a ray of sunshine in the darkness. Worshipers sat in the pews as Fr. John McEvoy led them in slow, quiet, meditative prayer. In between each prayer was a time of silence for reflection followed by hymns that were sung by the Adult Choir led by Wayne Warren. Taizé Prayer was founded in France in the 1940s by a Swiss man known as Brother Roger in a monastic community devoted to prayer and reconciliation. A Taizé worship service involves song and chanted prayers, meditation, and a period of silence.

College Project Inspired LeAnne’s Cookies Into Successful Local Business Award-winning LeAnne’s Old Fashioned Cookies, is a truly homegrown success story. Owner LeAnne Crabtree was as a Finance major at the University of Central Florida, one of the required marketing projects was to plan and set up a business, market the product, keep accurate records and report any profits or losses the business generated. Since Crabtree has always enjoyed making cookies, she used her family’s fourth generation secret chocolate chip recipe and set up her marketing class cookie business. Her cookies were an instant hit with college students, professors, neighbors and friends, who gladly bought all the cookies she could produce. Her marketing project made a profit and the demand for “LeAnne’s Old Fashioned Cookies” continued even though her professor gave her a “C” on the project. He assumed people were becoming too health conscious and wouldn’t buy cookies, however, the demand for LeAnne’s cookies continued-

Working as a part time cashier for an Orlando grocery store, Crabtree made friends with the owners of a nearby pizza shop. Soon they offered to let she and her husband make cookies in their pizza ovens after hours. She always baked extra cookies and left them for the owners to enjoy. In 1990, graduation day finally arrived. With her Finance Degree in hand, Crabtree, her family and the young cookie company moved to Seffner, Florida (a small town east of

Rezoning Of Former St. Stephen Property Could Bring Asst. Living Community

The Diocese of St. Petersburg is currently in the negotiating stages to sell the site of the former St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, located at 5049 Bell Shoals Rd. to Bridgepoint Lifecare Group. Plans call for redevelopment of the site into a new style of assisted living for seniors that focuses on freedom, comfort, convenience, and affordability. Plans for the assisted living facility call for one- and two-story villa homes, three-story residences, a building for those with special needs, a building for memory care as well as a resort pool with cabana and town center. Brian Bokor, who identifies himself as a concerned citizen, said, “I keep myself on the pulse of the community and there clearly are two sides to this issue.” He explains that the people that live in the neighboring subdivisions are opposed to the plan because of traffic, noise and other issues.
“There is a lot of opposition from local residents but a lot of support from the people from the church,” he added. While Bokor said that he is not on either side of the issue, he as well as many people who signed the petition referenced below pointed out that the alternative to an assisted living facility could turn out to be something that creates much more noise and traffic. “What is the option if it doesn’t go through,” he mentioned. A rezoning hearing (RZ-PD 180100 BR), originally scheduled for February, is being continued by the applicant and will be held on April 16. Proponents of the plan are asking for community members to sign a petition in support of this redevelopment to present at the Zoning Hearing Master Hearing. Artwork Of Area School Children On Display At The SouthShore Regional Library
Children from area public elementary schools submitted artwork for the Public Elementary School Exhibit currently on view at the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin.
The April art exhibit in the John Crawford Art Education Studio at the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin is a wonderful collection of artwork created by local public elementary school children. The exhibit can be viewed through the end of April during the library's regular operating hours. The artwork is different and striking. The exhibition shows the passion that even a small child can have for art. There are creations made by students as young as those who attend first grade. Additionally, the artwork reflects the instruction and techniques passed onto students by the area's art teachers. Each teacher selected a medium and subject matter that their students followed in creating their artwork. Students who are participating in the exhibit come from the following schools and art teachers- Wimauma Elementary (Julia Dejarmette); Cypress Creek Elementary (Sandra Shelton); Apollo Beach Elementary (Margit Redlawsk); Summerfield Crossing Elementary (Kimberly Hamaker); Reddick Elementary (Harris Hammersmith); Ruskin Elementary (Brenda Eastep); Dawson Elementary (Keith Garner); and Summerfield
Elementary (Jessica Sandin). The Public Elementary School Exhibit was organized by a member of the John Crawford Advisory Board at the library who is also a teacher. She worked closely with the teachers to put together the exhibit. Cheryl Wolfe, Administrative Librarian for the SouthShore Regional Library said, "I like how the teachers grouped the art for the exhibit." Wolfe added, "I am marveled over the students' creativity. I am glad that we are able to offer them a space to publicly exhibit their artwork." This includes the next exhibit which will feature fan art celebrating comics, anime, manga, sci-fi, fantasy and more. HCC Kids’ College Brings Technology Program To Middle School Girls At SouthShore Campus

This summer, Hillsborough Community College will join Verizon Innovative Learning, an education initiative of the Verizon Foundation, to introduce more girls, especially those in rural parts of the country, to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. Launched in partnership with the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the two-year program was piloted last summer at five community colleges and will expand to 16 community colleges, engaging over 1,500 students. Kicking off this summer with a threeweek intensive learning experience, 100 girls from local middle schools across Ruskin and Wimauma will attend courses at HCC’s SouthShore Campus in augmented and virtual reality, coding, 3D design, entrepreneurship and design thinking principles free of charge. The students will continue to participate in monthly sessions throughout the academic year where they will develop a technology solution for a community problem that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Focus areas of the SDGs include poverty reduction, quality education, good health and well-being, climate action, peace and justice or gender equality. “We are extremely proud to be a part of this vital program benefiting middle school girls in our local community,” said

At Oakfield Dental in Brandon it strives to do everything possible to make dental visits pleasant and positive experiences for their patients. In 2016, Oakfield Dental became established by Dr. Amir Boules, D.M.D. His wife Dr. Melanie Leung, D.M.D. joined the team too with knowledge and a heart for working with kids such as those with Autism and other special needs. To add, the staff here did get handpicked to provide individuals with the best quality care to make the dentist visit most comfortable and enjoyable. Leung earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania. 2018 Summer Camps Offer Many Options To Keep Your Kids Active It’s only the start of spring, but before you know, the dog days of summer will be upon us. What can you do to keep the kids entertained? Dance, Music And Theater Camps Take Center Stage At Patel Conservatory
Registration is now open for Patel Conservatory dance, music and theater summer camps and classes, which begin the week of May 29. Nearly 70 camps and classes are offered, most with performance opportunities, for students of all ages and abilities. Some camps and classes require auditions. Theater auditions will be held March 29, April 19 and May 18 and music auditions will be held April 7 and May 5. Auditions for Patel Conservatory Popular Dance (PCPD) classes will be held April 7. There are camp options for ages 3 to 18. AquaTots for ages 3-4 and AquaKids for ages 5-6 include science exploration, art and crafts and much more. There are two sets of fullday on-site camps for ages 6-7 and 89 which include science exploration, tours of aquarium, live animal encounter, field trip and more. Full day travel camps for ages 1011 and 12-14. Each day or week of camp has a new theme with new lessons and activities that focus on marine science. Campers should bring a water bottle, swimsuit, sunscreen,
mask, snorkel and fins every day. There are also two different scuba camps offered, one for ages 12–15 – NAUI SCUBA Diver. Campers can Earn Open Water certification through SCUBA classroom and pool training provided by a certified NAUI SCUBA instructor from The Florida Aquarium dive operations staff. Ages14–18 can take Rescue Scuba and can learn to be a stronger dive buddy and prepare to respond to a variety of diving emergency situations with a NAUI Rescue Diver Course. Learn Baseball From The Pros At Ostingers Academy Baseball Camp
Ostingers Academy will hold Baseball Camp this summer to give your child a better understanding of the game of baseball, through instruction, drills, and games. Having a good time while learning the fundamentals will be the main focus of this camp. Ostingers staff is made up of all former professional players who instruct, teaching the game from the ground up. The camp is not a full day camp with video games and indoor activities.
