Those who drive on US Hwy 301 might notice a large building and parking lot recently built near the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. On April 28 of this year, Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. opened a new 12,000 sq. ft. retail store that joins its 200,000 sq. ft. warehouse and distribution center. Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. previously had its distribution center headquartered at 10596 Gandy Blvd. in St. Petersburg. Searching for a better site for its distribution center, led to ther elocation on US Hwy 301. This new distribution and retail center will also house logistical operations and transportation. Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. Senior Creative and Media Relations Manager Jennifer Fleming shared that the location site suited its needs in regards to the trucks being able to get products in its store. “We call it the hub because it has the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway and Interstate 4 right there, giving it a great location for distribution,” Fleming said. This new store will be its 20th retail store and its first new one in Hillsborough County since 2002. Individuals who visit can discover a variety of brand new products, household items, donated clothes and more. On the south side of the retail store, a drive-through donation lane can be found, which will make dropping off donations quick and easy. Come out with family and friends and continue or start the tradition of attending The Community Roundtable's Annual Brandon 4th of July Parade. The parade is held on the 4th of July beginning at 10 a.m. in the heart of Brandon.
The Annual Brandon 4th of July Parade presented by The Community Roundtable will be held on Wednesday, July 4. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Law Offices of Reed & Reed at the corner of Lumsden and Parsons. The route will continue north on Parsons, stop at the reviewing stand located in front of Nature's Health Foods at Parsons and Oakfield, continue west on Robertson and end in the Publix parking lot at Buckingham Place. This year’s theme is Traveling America. Janine Nickerson, President of the Community Roundtable said, “The Community Roundtable proudly presents the 61st Annual Brandon Independence Day Parade. This is a family tradition with family values at the core of the parade and highlighting the event.” The Grand Marshall for this year’s parade is Tony Saladino. Nickerson added, “Participants in the parade include bands from both
“Many families have come to the parade for years,” added Nickerson. Brandon’s 4th of July Parade is a great tradition that celebrates the residents, schools, organizations and nonprofits of the greater Brandon area. The parade features floats, marching bands, dancers and more. Included in each year’s line-up is the winner of the Annual Honorary Mayors’ Race. The winner is announced the morning of the parade along with the winner of The Community Roundtable’s Father of the Year. You can also see the winner of the Alice B. Tompkins Award (an award given to someone who epitomizes service to the community) and the winner of the Maureen Krzanowski Scholarship. “At the request of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, alcohol and squirt guns are banned,” said Nickerson. The Parade Committee is looking for sponsors and volunteers. Students in need of community service hours can have fun and help the community by volunteering for set up and clean up. Faces of Courage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides day outings and overnight camps for women, children and families touched by all types of cancer and blood disorders. All programs are given free of charge. Faces of Courage was founded by Peggy Sherry in 2004. It is a Tampa based nonprofit, but it serves cancer survivors from all over the country. Faces of Courage is able to provide services for free thanks to tireless volunteers and support from the community. Volunteers such as Larry Brooks provide essential services. Brooks, who lives in Sun City Center, became involved with Faces of Courage about eight years ago. He works in the kitchen at every camp that is held. Brooks said, "I volunteer because I see what the camp means to the survivors who attend. At one of the camps, a
woman with cancer gave me a hug and thanked me for being there." Brooks added, "While the emphasis at the camps is certainly on fun, it also provides support and focuses on developing a strong positive attitude towards recovery and good health management. Many of the volunteers are survivors as well, and when they tell a camper they know what they are going through, they really do know." Sherry said, "No one can understand the cancer journey until they have heard the words 'You have cancer.' When these survivors can get together, leave their wigs in the cabin and openly talk about their feelings, worries and hopes, it is very healing." Faces of Courage has several upcoming camps for women and children. It is hosting two Adult Women's Camps on August 17-19 and September 14-16. It will host Santa's Workshop Weekend for children ages 2-12 the weekend of November 30 to December 2. Registration for camps opens approximately five weeks before camp. Camps cost approximately $250 per camper. To offset the cost of the camps, Faces of Courage holds events such as ‘It's Too Hot Music Fest’ on Sunday, July 15 and a Top Golf event on Sunday, July 22. How To Inspire Summer Reading With Fun Local Incentives While summer is the perfect time for kids to take advantage of days spent away from the classroom, remember not to put valuable skills, like reading, on the backburner. In fact, research estimates that one to two months of learning loss can occur during the summer. To help your child maintain his or her reading level and avoid the ‘summer slide’ – which can be counteracted in part by reading 20 minutes a day over the summer – Kate DiCamillo, a two-time Newbery Medal-winning author and the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program literary partner, recommends finding ways to make reading a fun, interactive experience that incorporates children’s interests. “Reading together is one of the best ways I know to foster a love of reading,” DiCamillo said. “You can read to your child. Your child can read to you. You can listen to an audiobook together. You can both read the same book at the same time and discuss it when you are done. Reading is a way to connect to each other and the world.” Help your student maintain his or her skills and develop a love of reading this summer with these tips.
Love The Library
Making periodic trips to the library as part of your routine can be a good step. For many children, browsing the shelves on their own and discovering new books in a library can help
them get excited about reading. Most libraries offer something for every reader, regardless of age or skill level, including a structured environment that can help make reading a priority. Hillsborough County Public Libraries offer ‘Build a Better World’ - Summer Events for Youth which take place through July 29. An HCPLC App is available to help you navigate through the calendar of events.
Incorporate Interests
During the school year, many of the books your student is reading are probably assigned, but summer offers the opportunity for him or her to choose what to read and tailor selections toward specific hobbies or interests, which can increase enjoyment. Start by creating a list of books and activities that align with
By Family Features and Photo courtesy of Getty Images those interests, and take advantage of pre-built lists at libraries or online resources like those at bookitprogram.com/summer, which offers a variety of book suggestions and activities to help increase reading during the summer months.
Program Participation
Many schools, bookstores and libraries offer summer reading programs for students. Joining a program can provide a way to track your child’s progress, and there are typically rewards involved for meeting certain criteria, which can provide a level of motivation that may otherwise be difficult to replicate. Visit Barnesandnoble at https://specialists.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading?summer-reading-lists-for-kids for its summer reading program. Read your way around the ballpark with The Tampa Bay Rays at www.mlb.com/rays/community/reading. Remi's Mini's at 11267 Winthrop Main St. in Riverview is offering a Summer Reading Program through August 1. Each school age child should
read five age appropriate books, write down the title, author and what their favorite part of the book was. Bring the paper in to Remi’s and redeem it for a free four count of donuts.
Make Materials Matter
In addition to traditional books, summer reading can include materials of all lengths, from chapter books to short stories and even magazines or comic books. Even if you’re committed to limiting screen time during the summer, consider a compromise that allows for the use of devices to read e-books or listen to an audiobook.
Read On The Road
One of the best ways to ensure your kids are reading is to make reading materials available to them, even when you’re on the go during the busy summer months. Whether it’s a long road trip or just a trip to the store, taking books, or playing audiobooks in the car is a perfect opportunity to squeeze in some reading time. Fostering the habit during the summer can help ensure your child is prepared when school – and the annual BOOK IT! Program – starts again. The program, available to kindergarten through sixth-grade students, helps motivate students to read by rewarding them with recognition and pizza. Learn more about the program and find more summer reading tips and activities at bookitprogram.com/summer.

Brandon Rotary Group Helps Community With Check Presentations
By Kate Quesada
Members of the Brandon Rotary Club gave more than $92,000 to local charities at a check presentation event on May 29.
Hundreds of needy residents are better off this month thanks to the work of a local group. The Brandon Rotary Club held its Annual Check Presentation in late May giving out more than $92,000 to area charities raised at events held in the last 12 months. The charities, nominated by club members, included Family Promise of Brandon, Women’s Resource Center, ECHO, The Outreach Clinic, Rotary’s Camp Florida and the Brandon Rotary Club Fund - Scholarship Fund. In addition, the club will also award six $1,000 scholarships to local area high school graduates at the end of this month. “Service to the community is one of the objects of Rotary and the club has had a tremendously successful year,” said Rotary President-Elect Deborah Meegan, who is also Executive Director of the Brandon Outreach Clinic. The money is raised at the club’s three main fundraisers which take place throughout the year. In September, the group holds a clay
shoot at FishHawk Sporting Clays, a golf tournament is held at Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club in January and the signature Wild Game Dinner takes place in March at Lupton’s Boggy Bottom Ranch. Established in 1961, the club prides itself on being a one of the foremost organizations for business people and professionals committed to community and international service. According to Meegan, Brandon Rotary members have raised more than two million dollars for local charities since the group’s inception. “In addition to raising money, we carry out several services projects a year in the community,” she said. “Community service is one of the objects of Rotary which encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.” The group, which currently has 58 members, meets Tuesdays at 12 Noon at the Rivard-Simmons Rotary Event Center at 3007 S. Kings Ave. with a variety of speakers and social events are planned throughout the year. “We welcome all service minded individuals who want to make a difference in our community,” said Meegan. “Joining Rotary is a great opportunity to network, meet new friends and learn more about our community.” For more information, contact Meegan at 601-2315.

Registered Voters In Hillsborough Have Three Methods To Vote: By Mail, Early And On Election Day And Every Vote Counts
By Kathy L. Collins
In the United States, voting is a right. However, in order to exercise this right, every voter in Hillsborough County must be informed and must know where to vote and how to do it. There are three methods- Vote By Mail, Early Voting and Election Day Voting. In order to vote, you must be registered by July 30 for the Primary which is set for August 28. You must be registered by October 9 for the General Election which will be held on November 6. When you register, you are asked to select a party. That would be either Republican or Democrat or No Party Affiliation or one of the minor political parties. Florida is a closed primary state. This means that for the Primary Election, your ballot will reflect the party that you have selected. In other words, you vote only for the candidates from your party as well as non-partisan races such as Judge (County and Circuit) and School Board. In the General Election, your ballot is based upon where you reside. You can view sample ballots for both the Primary and the General Election at www.votehillsborough.org. “One of the most important things we can do to conduct a successful election is to make sure that voting is easy and accessible for all voters,” said Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer. VOTE BY MAIL Vote By Mail is the most convenient method. It is often referred to as
By Mail ballot by August 22 for the Primary Election and by October 31 for the General Election. “We pay the return postage on Vote By Mail ballots and have drop off boxes for those ballots at all of our Early Voting sites and offices, to make that as Supervisor of Election, Craig Latimer (Shown here with easy as possible,” said long time Poll Workers, Linda and Jimmie Wright) wants Latimer. Absentee Voting. However, Floridians no longer need an excuse to choose EARLY VOTING this option. If you request this method, Early Voting is set up before both you will receive your ballot in the mail, the Primary Election and the General and you can take your time making your Election. This year, Early Voting will take voting decision. Rest assured, if November 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. you choose this method, your vote will In Hillsborough County, there will be be counted. You must request you Vote 19 Early Voting sites open. “For our
2018 elections, we have added three new Early Vote sites. During the Early Voting period, voters can vote at any of the 19 voting sites,” said Latimer. The new sites include the Valrico Recreation Center which was added to ease congestion at the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library. Please visit www.votehillsborough.org for a complete list and the times they are open. Early Voting is just like Election Day Voting. You must bring one or two forms of identification with your photo and signature on it. Acceptable forms of identification include Florida Driver’s License, state issued identification, U.S. Passport, Student ID, Public Assistance ID and more. ELECTION DAY VOTING Polling Places or Precinct, noted on your Voter Registration Card, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. You can bring your sample ballot with you and use it while you vote. Whichever method you choose, remember your vote counts. “On Election Day, voters must vote in the polling place assigned to their precinct. Remember, Election Day is your last chance to vote. Because the majority of voters will have voted during the Early Voting period, we do not expect lines in the Election Day polling places,” said Latimer. Safe Tips For When The Skies Light Up...
By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH
July is approaching, and with its arrival come the festivities that surround the Fourth of July. Many pet owners may already be familiar with the fear and anxiety that lightning and thunder from summer storms can cause in a number of pets. This fear of loud noises can become so intense that some pets become frantic and even destructive. Loud fireworks also can have the same effect. Along with the deafening noise of fireworks, there are also the cookouts and outdoor parties that can lead to stress for our pets. Some animals can develop vomiting, diarrhea or anorexia, as well as behavioral problems, such as urinating or defecating in the home, chewing up furniture or personal items and even breaking windows and doors. I have several suggestions that may help during these stressful times. If you know that your pet will be upset by a large party or noisy fireworks, consider boarding him or her at your veterinarian's office, where he or she will be in a controlled environment. If you prefer that your pet stays at home, you can set up a calm, safe area or allow the pet to stay in a quiet part of the house where guests are not permitted. For pets that tend to get frantic or destructive, it is best to confine them in a sturdy crate where they cannot hurt themselves or your property. Some animals feel like the sky is falling when they hear they hear thunder or fireworks
and do best in a small area with four walls and a roof to provide some sense of security. For this reason, you may want to cover the pet's crate with a sheet or set the crate up in a walk-in closet. If you are able to stay and sit with your pet, you can help to soothe and calm him or her, as well. And then there are those animals that may be so out of control that your veterinarian will have to prescribe a sedative. This, however, is a last resort, since you could end up with a ‘drunk,’ yet still very frightened pet. Make sure your pets are safe as well as comfortable during any parties you host. As most parties and barbecues usually end with their own displays of fireworks and sparklers, make sure that both pets and small children are kept at a safe distance. If you are planning on setting up a fireworks display, be sure dogs are kept on leashes and cats are kept indoors. Proper disposal of fireworks is very important. Some can remain hot after they have been ignited, which can cause severe burns when handled. Also be especially cautious of the types of fireworks that are mobile once ignited. Using common sense and being aware of possible dangers when preparing for your celebration can keep stress to a minimum and allow everyone-including your pets-to enjoy the festivities and make it a memorable and safe celebration.

The Perfect Wedding Band
N
ow that you have your engagement ring and settled on your venue and dress, it’s time to pick out the perfect band to accompany your lefthand sparkler.
There are many factors to consider. Cost, comfort and overall style are a few of the most important ones.
SET YOUR BUDGET
Ironically, wedding bands are one of the most overlooked costs of planning a wedding — and they can be expensive. However, you can find beautiful rings in every budget. It is important to balance what you can afford with what you want to see on your hand for the rest of your life. Be sure to account for bands for both you and your significant other. Materials (gold, platinum or titanium) and gemstones will factor into the final price.
MATCHING YOUR RING VERSUS MATCHING YOUR PARTNER’S
Answering this question will help you narrow down your choices a lot. If you want your wedding bands to match, then you need to discuss elements that both of you do (and perhaps more importantly don’t) want. Or perhaps there is a wedding

band that matches your engagement ring. Be sure to discuss your options with your partner before hitting up a jewelry store.
TRY ‘EM ON
Nothing will help you make a decision faster than seeing
potential bands sitting next to your engagement ring. After you’ve set your budget and discussed your options with your significant other, it’s time to try on some rings. If you have the opportunity and the time, visit as many local jewelry stores as possi-
ble. You never know where you are going to find a deal and a truly breathtaking band. Plus, there is not much that beats spending a casual hour in a jewelry shop while associates bring you band after band to slip on your finger.
THROW OUT RULE BOOK
There are no hard-and-fast rules to what type of wedding band you should choose, including choosing none at all. Stay true to your own style and budget and you will end up with a ring you are eternally happy with.

Your wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some wellearned relaxation. No matter if you’ve planned a relaxing week on the beach, adventure in the mountains or a quick city getaway, you want to make sure you bring everything you could possibly need. C
Make A List
Making a list is the first step to ensuring nothing important gets left behind. The key is not to make your list in one sitting or just a few days before departure. You need time to come back to it. Choose things that mix and match well, and that perhaps you can get more than one use out of if you will be gone for several days.
Consider Going Carry-On Only
Not having to check any luggage makes traveling so much easier and saves you precious time! Think about it. Would you rather be pacing around
a luggage carousel or be that much closer to sipping mai tais at the beachside bar? Try packing versatile pieces for your trip, or visit a local luggage store for things like pack-flat toiletry kits and packing cubes that can save serious room in your suitcase.
Checking A Bag
No matter how inconvenient, there are some bags you just need to check. Maybe your honeymoon is an extended trip or you will be hitting several destinations in varying climates. Whatever the reason, checking at least one bag might be your best bet. If this is the situation, planning your carry-on actually becomes more important in case your checked bag doesn’t arrive with you. Consider adding travel insurance to make sure you’re covered. Always pack at least one spare outfit, comfortable flats, a swimsuit and another spare outfit appropriate for dinner. This should get you through the first few days without your checked luggage before it is either found and delivered to you, or give you enough time to purchase replacements of essential items at your destination.

Wedding Party Rentals
ne of the most commonly told fibs about bridesmaids’ dresses is that you can wear them again. If you have ever been in a wedding, you know this is decidedly untrue for the most part.
Why is it that groomsmen can rent tuxes for a small fee and return them after the party while bridesmaids are left to pay hundreds of dollars on gowns they may only wear once? According to the the BRIDES American Wedding Study 2016, the average bridesmaids dress costs $133, and the majority of brides (66 percent) pick a color and allow their bridesmaids to choose the dress style while only 33 percent match both
color and style. This much freedom for today’s bridesmaid means you shouldn’t be afraid to exercise your right to rent rather than buy your dress.
RENTAL OPTIONS
Many local shops offer discount rental pricing based on dress style and number of people in your wedding party. Ask around prior to settling on your dress company to find the best deals for your bridesmaids. They will appre-
ciate both the discounted pricing and your effort in trying to ensure it. If you have enough in your budget, offer to pay for extra jewelry or accessories to show your bridesmaids you care. You may save enough on a rental deal to allow you to do so.
BRIDESMAID QUESTIONS TO ASK
While searching for fashion rental options, be sure to ask the following questions:
• What is your damage and incidentals policy? • How long can I rent the dress for? • If I like the dress, can I have the option to buy it? Let the answers to these questions guide your final decision. As the bride, remember to include your bridesmaids in the decision-making process. This will help keep everyone on the same page and ensure your friends’ enthusiasm on your special day.

Summer Wedding Details There are many advantages to getting married in the summer. For starters, It’s easier for people to take off work and the weather is more consistent. Make your wedding stand out by incorporating some of the following details. 1. A selfserve ice cream bar or snow cone cart. Both whimsical and refreshing, a snow cone cart or ice cream bar puts a new twist on wedding desserts. They also keep guests cool as a cucumber on a sultry summer day. Check with party rental companies to see what options they can offer. 2. Signature cocktails. You can have a signature cocktail no matter the season of your wedding. But a crisp cocktail in a bright color screams summer — not to mention many fruits and veggies are in season and at their height of flavor. Work with a local bartender to find out what’s in season to craft the best drink to reflect your tastes. 3. Lawn games. The summer wedding season brings many an outdoor affair. Let guests make their own fun by offering a selection of lawn games, such as, croquet and lawn dice, which work well with
players sporting formal wear. 4. Sparklers. When things get late and it’s time to take your leave, do it in style by handing out sparklers for guests to light and line your path. 5. A seaside locale. Nothing says summertime more than a beach wedding or a lawn wedding by the sea. 6. Bright bouquets. Summer was made for bold colors — and Mother Nature agrees! Choose flowers in vivid colors like red, pink or yellow. Pick large blooms like peonies, hydrangeas or sunflowers. No matter what you decide to incorporate into your summer wedding, remember to always get quotes from as many local vendors as possible. Doing so will save money and uncover unique ideas that may help your special day stand out from the summer wedding crowd.

KCC students excel in science.
In a recent study through the Educational Leadership and Counseling Department at Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, Riverview South Kid’s Community College K-8 (KCC) was one of only seven schools in the state able to reverse the science achievement gap, and African American students outpaced their white counterparts on the 2016-2017 state science assessment. Established in 2003, KCC is a K8 charter with the goal of providing an individualized education based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory to each of its students. KCC is committed to a more well-rounded approach to education that takes into account spatial, kinesthetic, musical, inter/intrapersonal,
and naturalist intelligences. By recognizing and building upon the unique gifts each student brings and supplementing a student’s challenge areas, professors tailor an instructional approach to scaffold all students to success. “At KCC, students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics,” explained KCC Servant Leader, Tim Kilpatrick. Karen Seder, Campus Director, could not be more proud of her students’ success: “KCC is now and has always been dedicated to the well-being and educational success of every child.” These statistics affirm KCC’s conceptual framework, but it is the students’ excitement for learning that really drives Seder and her staff. Seeing the smiles on students’ faces when they brought back two 1st place and one 3rd place Elementary Science Fair awards and a 2nd place Middle School award is the real reward. KCC is a free public charter for all students in Hillsborough County. With nine campuses to choose from, there is a KCC near you ready to meet your child’s needs. For more information, visit online at mykidscc.org or email info@kidscc.org. KCC Riverview South K-8 is located at 10030 Mathog Rd. in Riverview. Contact Karen Seder at 671-1440 or kseder@kidscc.org.
